listing the contents of a web site

I remember some time ago that it is possible to prevent index.html ,
index.htm etc... from loading when going to a site? does anyone know how to
do this?

Why would you want to do this?

The only way I can think of doing it would be to use some sort or
redirection in your meta tags. I think the syntax is:

META HTTP-EQUIV="REFRESH" CONTENT="5;index1.htm"

or whatever.
