Does anybody know the actual status of V90 support on freeserve. I know they
claim to be up and running but my modem keeps reporting very low rates. This
connection gave a report of CARRIER 31200. If I disable automoding I usually
get a carrier and then before any connect I get a NO CARRIER and the modem
hangs up. I have only managed to connect with a 56000 carrier once and that
was via minicom.

Sorry to jump in here, but how do you check this? When connecting, I
recieve a lot of messages from chat and ppp in /var/log/messages but
none showing the connection speed. Is there something I can add to my
chat script to tell me?

I had to put W1 in my init string to get the modem to report speeds as well
as just CONNECT i.e. ATZW1 where you have ATZ.

If you remember the old BBS and terminal packages like Telix and Terminate
then you will already know
what I am talking about (hope fully).

You can get your modem to report a number of things on connect not only the
speed between the
2 modems but things like parity and flow control.

Often you had fine tune your modems init strings for certain BBS's this
still happens today
I can get a faster connects by adding at commands to my modem's init string.

(for a list of at commands you should look in your modems manual )
