All people that use Hotmail are supporting junk email. Just use the
filters in your own software to block everything from Hotmail.

Check out the UFAQ, link from my faqs site as per signature.
You should hide your read E-Mail add'y for a start, go to Tools / Accounts /
News / Properties and change your E-Mail address. Try something like :
te...@traithby.fsnot.co.uk which is easy for someone to work out but will
stop Some auto junk mail. Or use something like mine which has no relation
to my real add'y.
You are likely to get into serious trouble if you use someone else's

Agreed.
Try J...@example.com
Jims-n...@example.com
Or even J...@127.0.0.1
But you really should use a Valid Reply-to address, so not to breech your
ISP's, AUP terms and cond,

Following the guidelines, why not put INVALID on the end of any From address

Your own address above *could* belong to someone and that would be very

But did you try a Finger lookup to j...@example.com or look at
www.example.com ?
but i agree with GWs point re, clogging up network.
So perhaps @127.0.0.1 is the safest one to use ;)

Not so. Most ISPs don't insist that you give spammers a free
ticket to your mailbox and the suffix .invalid was invented for
the purpose: servers instantly reject them without bothering to
look them up.

example.com is registered by someone else and even if it is not
currently used for email/web or anything else it may be tomorrow. A
company called, say, Example may buy it and start using for their
business. You cannot just use an address without asking permission from
the owner.
So far in this thread three 'made-up' addresses have been used or
suggested that are, or could be, registered to someone else. The people
who have registered the addresses have every right to complain or seek
financial recompense if you choose to use them without permission,
especially if your re-directed spam affects their business.

Frosties??
Have a look at this, GF: http://members.aol.com/emailfaq/mungfaq.html
which gives a lot of good advice.
The word '.INVALID' at the end of the address is not interpretable as any
possible user address and if the DNS server guy has set it up nicely it
will reject the spam email because it doesn't look up and the SMTP
server will not send it.
Anything that is appended to the end will not look up on the local DNS
and thus not enter the email network only to be rejected by the far end
host and thereby generate a rejection/undeliverable note to come all
the way back to the sender. You may not care that the spammer gets
all the reject notices but it slows down your surfing by unneccessarily
increasing traffic.

Very little if anything is gained by doing this.
Current software can easily strip words such as "nospam" "invalid" from
harvested addresses, turning me_n...@privacy.invalid
Into a working addy.
It can also filter unwanted Domains such as "Example.com/net" which are
listed for documentation
And blocked.
Best to use hotmail or if you have a network conscious, 127.0.0.1 as
another poster advised.
Also Invalid.com is up sale if anyone should feel the need.!

Incidentally your From address filters out to @his-com-puter.com/co uk
Which are currently available.
@His-computer.com/co.uk/org are already taken.
So it won't be to long before someone is catching your news Spam.

Of course there is! The spam harvester won't be able to find a valid email

The reasoning behind a "de-munging bot"is to collect the highest
percentage of valid usable addresses, these are tested with a .com/co
/net ending if necessary, and any 502s get added to the dbase.
By now it could well be classified as a random address generator!
But with a much-improved success rate.

I use no form of mail filtering and I receive no junk mail, the same could
not be said if I did as you suggest. If I wish too I will occasionally post
a hotmail add'y to enable someone to mail me, but in general I prefer to be
anonymous. Some of the threads I have posted in (Like the Fred and Mike H
tiff) would generate loads of crap from other posters in my personal in-box,
all I get as a result of an argument that went on for months is the odd

P.S. Where is it you line dancing git!
> Jim
> j...@gobbleD.go.ok
> email: jimATstaug-glos.fsnet.co.uk
That's fine, but get rid of the "j...@gobbleD.go.ok" after the "Jim",
it's just misleading. Don't forget, none of this is compulsory - it's
just suggestions.
The first line of the sig should be "-- " (hyphen hyphen space). This is
known as the signature separator or sig sep. Decent news clients use this
to strip signatures out of quoted text.
On the subject of which, it is a good idea to quote *relevant* text in
newsgroups (as above). Sometimes replies can be propagated to other
servers before the original post, or you may be replying to an old post.
If you don't quote text, no-one will know what your referring to without
going to the trouble of looking through the archived posts. It is also
conventional to "bottom post" e.g. place your comments below relevant
text so that it reads top to bottom in a logical order, and snip out
irrelevant stuff from the quoted text to keep the post to a minimal size.
Search for "netiquette" on the web for further hints.
Use Tools, Options, Signatures tab to type your sig, so that it's entered
automatically when you start a new message. The Advanced button allows
you to select the accounts you want to use that sig for - you can use
different sigs for different news or email accounts (see Tools,
Accounts).
If you set OE to quote the message you're replying to, it's a lot easier
to edit it in place to retain the bits that are relevant and delete the
rest. The option to do that is in Tools->Options ->Send Tab (at least in
OE6 and I assume the same place in your OE5).
Digression: I always found that the killer feature in Gravity was the
ability to highlight a phrase in the preview, hit a key and get a
formatted reply with just that phrase quoted. Although the heavy
snipping involved (effectively) sometimes caused mild annoyance!

In Agent, if you left-click, drag and block part of a message in a
newsgroup then hit "Follow-up Usenet Message" you will only quote the
block as part of your reply.

Going back to the earlier correspondence, if I change @ to AT in my
signature,as I am now doing at John Patmore's suggestion, do I need to
bother with the 'gobbledegook' email address at all, to avoid receiving junk
mail? Perhaps this is one question too many, but you chaps always seem to
be very helpful to genuine beginners like myself.

I think if you change the @ symbol to AT and maybe the periods to DOT
that should be fine,
BTW something's still wrong with your signature settings; it came out on
top of your post and the line just under it has been scrubbed from this
reply by OE. Also the first line of your text begins with a '>' symbol
which confuses the quoting display settings in OE as well. Try posting
to a .test group (freeserve.test for instance) and posting a lot of test
messages onto there, replying and so on till it all seems right.
Seems he is after selecting reply, he is inserting sig which defaults to top
(groan) then replies at the bottom.
Den (who inserts sig here as well)

All replies spell checked by;
Varsity Publications

If you check `Add signature to all outgoing messages`, OE has an annoying
habit of putting it above the post you are replying to.
A better way to do it is to customize the Toolbars. That way your signature
always appears underneath your reply.
1. Go to Tools/Options/Signature tab and uncheck `Add signature to all
outgoing messages`. (`Advanced`, next to Edit Signature, allows you to have
different signatures for Mail and Newgroups).
2. Back in Inbox, Click on `Create Mail`.
3. Right click on an empty part of the Toolbar and select `Customize` from
the dropdown menu. This will bring up the Customize Window.
4. Select `Insert Signature` in the left pane and click `Add`.
5. Click on `Insert Signature`, which is now in the right pane, and `Move
Up` until it`s next to your `Send` button (you might have to drag the
Customize Window out of the way so you can see what you`re doing).
6. Close `Customize Window` and the page.
Click on news groups `New Post` and follow steps 3 onward.
When you have finished writing an email or ng post, click `Insert`, on the
Toolbar, and the correct signature will be added.
