I can't connect to the 161 number from my other Windows box, or my
Linux box either, but can on this one.

Then use the 0808 number! I'm not investigating any 161642 related reports of
problems as, with the service about to switched off, it is an efficient use of
my time to do so,

Then it either must be configuration on your systems, (since the 161 number
has no way of discriminating!!), or possibly it has developed a fault with
regard to some modems?
I have connected today from 0116 239 xxxx, using the
161642,08452402602 number without any difficulty whatsoever.
Your problem may be caused by the "clean re-install".
What happens, when you dial 161642,08452402602 from an ordinary phone?
If the call connects OK any you hear modem noises, then your BT
exchange must still be able to connect calls to the 161642 number.
One thought occurs to me. In your dial-up networking connectoid, you
need to:
a) leave the Area Code box blank
b) insert the entire number in the "Telephone Number" box
(including 161642 prefix and area code)
c) untick the box labelled "Use Area Code and Dialling Properties"
If you don't observe this procedure exactly, your modem may add a zero
to the "161 Area Code" and dial 0161 642 0845 - which may or may not
exist. (0161 is the Area Code for Greater Manchester ).

Catching the end of this conversation i'm in the 01794 area and my 0808
number is unreliable at best. Constant engaged tones etc. I hear that
the 161 number is going - is there a firm date. The 0808 number in this
area is currently unuseable

Miles,
Please give the first 7 digits of your phone number next time. Please also
give the 0808 number that you consider is having problems - there are 3 at
the moment.
08089933006 is certainly available in your area and 08089916001 should be
available shortly if it isn't already available.

Four other ISP numbers (Freeserve 0845, FreeUK, Freeola and Totalise)
all work fine on all three PCs. The 0808 FS number works fine too.
The 161 used to work on all three, and one day a couple of weeks ago
stopped working on the other two boxes. Since posting that, I have
tried it on a Win98 laptop, and although other numbers work, I get as
far as "16" before Madame BT explains that the number I have dialed
has not been recognised.
Have tried all PCs on two different phonelines too.
Of course, I suspect BT is at fault :)

Same here. I have been cut off *18* times in the hour between 1900
and 2000. I have not managed to get my "full two hours" on the 0808
number at all since it's availability, and often have long pauses in
data transfer - often to the point where Windows thinks I am not
connected.
Hi,
I'm also in 01794 on ISDN. As you say, 161 is fine but 08089933006 requires
many attempts. I contacted FS and thet suggested I try 08089977001.
Unfortunately it doesn't seem to work at all.
I'm also trialling Net in a Nutshell at the moment (www.nutshell.net), and I
get through first time, every time. The cost is also £12.99. They have mail,
web and news servers. Support is at standard National Rate. On ISDN I am
getting data transfer rates of about 70kb/s (using www.numion.com).
Regards
John

I think the £9.99 deal is if you pay for 3 months up front. It then reverts
to £12.99.
I preferred to only pay for 1 month to make sure the service was OK.
They don't have a News Group or online forum, but if you want to find out
about how other people are getting on with them try the forums and reviews
at www.ispreview.co.uk and www.net4nowt.com
I really wish Freeserve support would check their lists before giving out
wrong information. 08089977001 isn't and probably never will be enabled in
your area. 08089916001 will be enabled shortly if it isn't already.

I've tried that no. also. It answers first time then sticks at
authentication. Would this be the expected behaviour if the no. isn't yet
available?
Just out of interest, what is the difference between the numbers? Are they
different bearers?
Thanks for the help.
That means the number will be available shortly and is half provisioned at
the moment. Try again in a few days.
: Just out of interest, what is the difference between the numbers? Are they

The way to make FRIACO cost effective is to take the calls directly out of
BT's local exchanges (all 750 or so of them). However, this is difficult
as it normally means digging to all of those 750 local exchanges. BT
obviously has links into all the exchanges so can provide a FRIACO number
that works nationally however for commercial and performance reasons,
large ISPs like Freeserve look to other telcos to provide FRIACO service.
The different numbers are different telcos (and thus different bearers
too). 08089933006 is BT, 08089916001 is Energis and 08089977001 is Energis
in partner with another organisation.
Energis also run the 161642084524026xx numbers and have learnt how to
provide as reliable a service as the single point of failure (BT local
exchange circuits) allow. BT seem to have difficulties in some areas at
some time and that's what gets reported here. My normal advice is to
suggest users check if Energis numbers are available and if so, try those.

How complete are their list of newsgroups, compared to news.freeserve.net?
Everything seems to be there. Anything in particular you had in mind?
Whoops sorry.

Number giving problem is 08089933006. I dial it as the defaul however in
peak times it is very often busy and I therefore revert to the 161
number

Cross fingers about the 2nd number. Do we get an email when it becomes
available?
Thanks, John! The newsgroups I wanted to make sure were there are:
alt.fan.sailor-moon and alt.anime.shoujo. I'm considering whether or not to
try a new ISP, as getting a good connection on Freeserve is a bit
hit-and-miss, and I am interested to know about viable alternatives.
Eevee (s-l-o-w-l-y working her way through the ISP review site)
They're both available.
Thanks, John!
