I have had a few e-mails with attachments the majority of which have been
withheld because OE considers them unsafe. What is an unsafe message? I ask
this because I cannot believe these particular senders would stoop to any
thing eg pornographic. Some of them were technical newsletters and travel
details.Can you help please?

An "unsafe attachment" is one that may contain a viral payload. It does
not mean that it is definitely infected, but some filters will
automatically flag such things even though the culprit may be perfectly
harmless. Usual suspects are any executable file type (.exe, .com, .pif
and so on) or Word documents (.doc - these may contain macro viruses), but
there are others.

The general rule of thumb is; if you don't know what it is, don't touch it.

For more information, try asking on one of the groups specialising in
Microsoft operating systems (this one handles RISC OS, hence "acorn" on
the end), or have a read through the UFAQ (www.ufaq.fsnet.co.uk)

From the front page of Outlook Express select Tools, then Options then
Security. Remove the tick from the box that says "Do not allow attachments
to be saved or opened that could potentially contain a virus." This is a
default setting created by Service pack 2 to make Windows XP the safest
system of all. Take Chika's advice and don't waste your time asking
questions on this group if you want correct answers to Windows questions.
