I'd like to share a rough schedule tuned to help you maximize the value of your time at the hackathon.

Hackathon day 1

Set up workarea
  Check out code
  Build (debug as needed)

Welcome stuff
  Why does the project exist, what does it do
  Advice to be successful in the project

Brainstorm project ideas
  New features
  UX enhancemnents
  Robustness improvements
  Test automation
  Collection of bug fixes
  Greenfield stuff

Hackathon day 2
 
  Pull request for a trivial change
  Update your work area in response to upstream changes
 
  Form sub-teams as appropriate
  Decide on meeting times
 
  Start on design document & project plan

 
Hackathon day 3

  Project idea pinned down
  Design document & project draft nearly complete
  Work on project
