Hey everyone,

I've been working on the settings interface, and one of the things that we talked about on the issue page was changing the term 'Plugins' to 'Advanced Settings'. This is purely a readability change, nothing will change on the back-end. I've talked to a few non-technical people about the interface at large, and one of the main points brought up is that no one knows what plug-in are, or what the term means.

I would really like to change the word to 'Advanced Settings' where it faces the user, but I know everyone doesn't feel that way.
Can we have a discussion about it and come to a decision?

Thanks,
Mia

I'm torn because it's not really "advanced settings", it's just a list of plugins the plugin manager found and was able to load into your Freeseer instance. You're not supposed to configure things from that interface, in fact we could remove the tool button so no one tries to configure anything here. It was handy at first when we didn't have the "Recording" tab but now we do so I think configuring stuff from that interface is pointless.

Even if we created an "Advanced Settings" tab the only thing that would exist in it is plugins anyway and nothing to configure. So I don't feel like it's even the right word.

Maybe we can change it to say "Plugin Manager" and remove the tool button on the right so that it doesn't let you configure anything?

Or we can call it "Advanced Settings" and make a sub-tab that's "Plugins" and all it shows is one list of plugins. Maybe with a horizontal bar between to separate the categories of plugins that it detected?

We could discuss this at the meeting tonight.

Thanks for the input Thanh,

If we remove all the config buttons then it makes a lot more sense to me. Then it wouldn't be advanced settings because there isn't anything to change, gottcha there. Plugin Manager sounds good.
I like the idea for a list of plugins, to exist only as a list. That makes sense, and then we'll move some of that functionality (like setting the area to record, for example) onto the recording tab.

I would definitely appreciate talking about it in a meeting.
Is it too much to do a hangout sometime soon specifically for this purpose?

Thanks.

I wouldn't mind attending a hangout if you'd like to do one. Pick a time and rally the mentors.

If we keep the configuration ability in the plugins list, one option is to rename the label to "Advanced Settings" but add tooltip that says "Plugins".

Another word for the label could be "Extensions", maybe that's a bit more understandable for end users.

Removing the configuration ability from the plugins list is okay by me as long as you can access those configurations easily from elsewhere (but only from one location, different ways to do the same thing is confusing).

Anyway, we can discuss further on a hangout (could even use a shared Google Drawing), or on IRC. Let us know when works best for you.
