Almost a full decade after the conclusion of Sons of Anarchy and over three years after its spin-off, Mayans M.C., came to an end, Kurt Sutter is ditching the world of crime-driven motorcycle clubs in favor of something entirely different. While his previous two series captured the essence of a classic Western in a modern-day setting, his upcoming new show for Netflix, The Abandons, is diving head first into the genre and will craft a tale that will take place in the Old West. This seems extremely fitting, considering that both Sons and Mayans were already considered to be modern-day neo-westerns.
While fans of Sutter's previous works now have something new and exciting of his to look forward to, there unfortunately isn't enough information that tell them too much about it at the moment. In the meantime, while they anxiously wait for more details to be revealed, it certainly seems the fans already have plenty of good news to get them as hyped as they can possibly be. With an intriguing story premise, a star-studded cast, and one of the greatest creators working in modern television being behind it all, The Abandons has a very strong chance of becoming the next big hit for Netflix.
The report further added that through the struggles of its characters, the show will be exploring "that fine line between survival and law, the consequences of violence, and the corrosive power of secrets". If Sutter's previous series are anything to go by, viewers should expect to see some tense yet compelling drama between its main cast of characters. They should also be prepared for any brutal and potentially even graphic violent content, considering that Sutter is now free from any limitations that he might've had when it came to the violence depicted in both Sons of Anarchy and Mayans M.C., and especially given the period in which the show is taking place.
Among the show's confirmed cast so far, a familiar face from Sons of Anarchy will once again be teaming up with Sutter. While some may recognize actor Ryan Hurst from such roles as Gerry Bertier in Remember the Titans and Beta from The Walking Dead, any Sons of Anarchy fans will be quick to recognize him from his role as SAMCRO member Harry "Opie" Winston from its first five seasons. Much like a large majority of the show's confirmed cast, it is currently unknown exactly who Hurst's character in The Abandons will be and what kind of impact his role will have on the show's overall story. Seeing how he's the only one of Sutter's previous collaborators to be playing a part in the show, however, there should be no doubt that Sutter has written an equally compelling character for him, just like Opie was.
Hurst has come a long way as a performer throughout his career; and especially through his time on Sons of Anarchy and The Walking Dead, he has constantly proven that he is more than capable of playing characters who are just as dangerous and threatening as he is at playing ones who are sympathetic and endearing. Not only that but given the length of his hair and beard that he's sported since his days as Opie, he certainly carries a suitable look for a Western character. No matter what kind of role he ends up playing, in the hands of Sutter, it is more than sure to be another great addition to his already great resume.
Seeing how Sutter's previous two series managed to score such legendary onscreen talent as Ron Perlman, Edward James Olmos, Danny Trejo, and even his own wife, Katey Sagal, it should come as no surprise that he managed to do the same with The Abandons, rounding out a star-studded group for its ensemble of main characters. Even though more and more names are still being added to the cast, the talent that has already been announced is more than enough to peak the interest of certain viewers. Emmy Award-nominated Game of Thrones alum, Lena Heady, along with two-time Emmy winner, Gillian Anderson, perhaps best known as FBI agent Dana Scully from The X-Files, will be headlining the cast as the two main leads, Fiona and Constance (respectively).
While it's currently unknown exactly what the relationship between Heady and Anderson's characters will be, there are a few other confirmed cast members who have not even had their character's names revealed. As previously mentioned, Ryan Hurst has also joined the show's impressive lineup of talent, along with Emmy-winning comedy legend, Patton Oswalt; but whoever the characters are that they'll be playing alongside Heady and Anderson have yet to be confirmed. Another recently announced cast member is Lucas Till, best known for playing Havok in the X-Men films and the titular hero of CBS' MacGyver reboot, who is confirmed to be playing the character of Garret Van Ness. Diana Silvers (Booksmart) and Nick Robinson (Love, Simon) have also recently jumped on board. Seeing how Silvers and Robinson's characters share the same last name, it's more than likely that the two characters will be related in one way or another and part of the same family, whether by blood or by marriage.
While a few key details of the show's story and a majority of its established cast have been announced, there doesn't seem to be any sort of release date in sight for The Abandons. While Netflix has quite a lineup of new and returning series set to premiere throughout the rest of the year and well into next year, Sutter's show hasn't made its way onto their schedule just yet. Seeing how certain cast members have only been announced within the last month, and with no announcements having been made on when or where it will begin filming, it's fairly safe to assume that it's still in the early production stages.
The details surrounding The Abandons that have been released so far don't exactly give Sutter's established fan base too much to go off on. However, as the show heads further and further into production, they should expect to see and hear much more about it. The idea that the creator of Sons of Anarchy is moving from modern-day neo-westerns to a straight-up period-piece western is more than enough information to have anyone excited. For the time being, the fans will just have to remain patient and assured that whatever Sutter is planning will be another great piece of modern television.
