I am still using photoshop elements 11. I had been using photoshop previously but abandoned it when Adobe went to the subscription model. By and large I find my old version of elements to be quite useful and I've felt little motivation to upgrade to any of the newer versions. It's not mentioned in the review but there are some downsides to upgrading. Newer versions require setting up an account on Adobe's cloud (doesn't appeal to me). It is also my understanding you cannot open the editor module directly (something I can do with my old version). I don't care for the organization features.
Personally, I wish Adobe chose a different path for photoshop elements upgrades. I would love to see enhancements to the basics, e.g., more refined masking and adjustments. Most of the AI stuff seems like gimmicks to me. Certainly something I wouldn't use frequently. To quote from the movie Amadeus, "Too many notes"
The only part of Adobe elements I mostly use is ACR, and is mostly just to compare output at times to other programs I am using. However it is far too limited to be real useful however when one wants to deep dive into real Editing. There are apparently FREE Programs out there that do Far More.
Certain functions are only doable in 8 bits. Layers for instance. Cloning for another. Using the art filters can only be done in 8 bits. Most expert features can be done with the full image and one can use plugins to perform lots of things on the 16 bit image elements can't do or doesn't do well. However, unless you create a layer and work in 8 bits, the plugin will act destructively. You won't be able to adjust the edit later. So it is probably a mixed bag for many. I have been using it for over 10 years so have learned to live within its limitations. Or use On1!
I have not used Photoshop but my understanding is it has a lot more features. One cannot adjust color channels in the ACR in elements. There is no CA or camera correction feature. No perspective adjustments. No curves. You get the standard tone sliders like whites, blacks, highlights, shadows. Basic denoise and sharpening. White balance and tint. They have added a number of camera profiles over the years. You can crop and level. It is really good if you're after simplicity and don't plan on making a lot of raw adjustments. I can resolve problems like CA later on using plugins. Which adds back the complexity! Why elements does not have CA correction is beyond me. One of my biggest gripes. Not having camera or lens corrections is another.
It would be nice to see a comparison with Affinity 2.
As far as I can see elements offer a lot the automation from full photoshop, provides a good photo indexing system, but eventually runs out of steam (presumably the idea is for you then to get the full photoshop)
Affinity however offers less automation, a higher learning curve, but a higher ceiling and of course it is a one-off payment
I do wonder however at the bottom end, whether there cheaper tools that do 99% that elements will do, while unless you are a professional graphical designer, affinity fills the niche of the majority of photographers without the adobe tax
There is a comparison, mainly because Adobe sells it as a fully featured photo editor, but the point to be made is that it is in fact a taster loss-leader version for full-blown photoshop which of course adobe would much prefer you use. You get some functionality with a lot of effects most you will never use, but some, like curves, not included.

Open Notepad, paste the code, save as "PSLaunch.bat" instead of a ".txt", and if you want to make life extra easy, redirect your photoshop shortcut to the file. Yes I did that before but the file formats does not exist now in this C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\Elements 20\File Formats instead of file formats it says custom hooks and file is empty. Also with the installer the new camera raw 14.2 is not showing up in steps 7 and 8 to copy -- is 14.1 I installed in January is there but do not know if I can even reinstall as file formats gone replaced by custom hooks. In my task manager is listing two processes called adobe genuine software intergration and service--- maybe theses do not allow download.
I bought through proper Adobe website where I have bought products for many years. Someone said there was an update for Elements 2022 and now includes the camera raw 14.1. I am at my cabin now and elements is on my desktop computer at home in city so cannot do much until next week. I might have to uninstall everything and start again.
As I mention I am missing the folder under elements 20 in program- common files Adobe-- elements 20 that is listed in the instructions above. Now only custom hook.
One of the newly introduced features is the wizard, which complements the processing modes full and quick. With his help ongoing, repeated tasks like color or brightness corrections, extractions of picture elements or the straightening of pictures can be done in the easiest way.
One of the most promoted features of the new version surely is the integration of the Online-abilities of Photoshop Elements 7: With a Basic-Packet, which is completely free, one can store his pictures on an Adobe-Server, share it with others, edit and manage them. 2GB data memory for it are available to the user. The Photomerge-function also in this program-version experienced an expansion. The opportunity of the scene clearing up is quite similar to the group picture but is merely specialized to scene motives than on groups of human. However also here one can remove or smear away unwanted elements from the picture. Prerequisite for this are several pictures, which were taken from the same viewing angle. A tripod however isn't necessary because Photoshop Elements aligns the pictures by itself.
Furthermore one can choose single picture extractions and search only for special elements which are contained in that. Photoshop Elements searches for appropriate pictures and additionally marks the area in which the motive occurs for which the search was done.
The most spectacular innovation is the content sensitive shifting. With this tool it is possible to select singular image elements and shift them within the picture. Photoshop fills the gap, which arrises in the background, with surrounding pixels. The program takes pixels which lie near the selected part. How good that works depends on the motive and the background.
Upon choosing the cropping-tool in the quick-mode, the program will automatically provide four different proposals for cropping the image. According to Adobe, the contents of the image are withal being analyzed to the effect that important elements such as persons are not being cut. This actually worked well in our test, given that the respective image structure. Large, areal, colorwise coherent elements are usually being recognized as such by the software. Naturally, the feature won't work as well in the case of pictures that are lacking such concise elements.
The functionaliy of photomerge has yet again been extended and improved. Adobe pledges that, using the new feature, elements and persons can be easily extracted in one - and pasted into another photograph. Supposedly, even the individual users' preferences are being gradually adapted and implemented. In practice, this learning component was lacking. What's more, the function cannot replace human skills. Inssuficient know-how cannot completely compensated by a program. Subsequently, we shall check ot Photomerge more thoroughly: By means of a montage, we'll illustrate some more of the innovations of version 13.
The tilt-effect of elements can, if used sparsely, be used for other effects. In the example picture, it has the effect of unsharp masking, affecting the skies, the roof of the chapel and the paratrooper. It looks almost like the right image section was befogged. During three, the user is guided by the software's assistant, leading to the desired result. The first step is entirely automatic - the software chooses an image section and applies the tilt-shift-effect to this section. In the next step, the focal area can be altered, i.e. the area that the tilt-shift-effect has been applied to can be altered by drawing a line with the mouse. The sharpness gradient will then be aligned with this line. In the third step, the effect can be further refined. For this purpose, several controls are at the user's commad by which diffusion, contrast and saturation can be manually influenced.
