Hello All,
My son, Kavinn Logesh who’s a high school student, is also learningTamil from Los Angeles Tamil School. Kavinn is part of a volunteer team called “Young Translators”, supported by Vetrivel Foundation, a nonprofit organization. Bunch of Tamil learning students in the USA are part of “Young Translators” participating in Tamil translation projects with support of their parents and other adults . I was discussing these with Thol anna a few days ago and he suggested sharing them with this group. We are currently involved in following projects for various nonprofit organizations. I have added some notes about each of the organizations below.
Ø Translating Khan Academy exercises from English to Tamil. These exercises will be used in https://ta.khanacademy.org
Ø Create practice problems / Quiz in Tamil based on the Tamil Nadu Textbook lessons. These practice problems will be used by Kalvi40 app.
Ø Translating English captions into Tamil for TedEd videos
Ø Translating English stories into Tamil for StoryWeaver portal
Khan Academy
Khan Academy (www.khanacademy.org) offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that empower learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom. We tackle math, science, computing, history, art history, economics, and more, including K-14 and test preparation (SAT, Praxis, LSAT) content. We focus on skill mastery to help learners establish strong foundations, so there's no limit to what they can learn next!
Kalvi 40
Kalvi40 (https://www.kalvi40.com/) is an Indian not-for-profit organization that works on creating opportunities for rural children in Tamil Nadu to improve their academic performance through technology. They have developed a mobile application that reaches hundreds of primary school children across Tamil Nadu who use it on a daily basis to learn.
Here is a short video of a demo of their app: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1pN-3yklp8wPPN-FqsBrNOH_Asi0lSeMB/view?ts=61f6d6ec
You can think of Kalvi40 mobile app as similar to Khan Academy, but created with the help of Indian teachers based on Indian text books based on their practical experience. Through their expertise, they have created thousands of short videos in Tamil that students can use to improve their understanding of various academic subjects.
TED
TED (https://www.ted.com/) is a very popular non-profit video platform that contains short videos on various topics. At Young Translators, we hand pick some of those videos and translate the subtitles into Tamil so that a Tamil speaking audience with limited or no English skills can watch them and understand the content.
StoryWeaver
StoryWeaver is a popular website for quality, free children’s books accessible in multiple languages. It is maintained by Pratham Books, which is a not-for-profit book publisher that was set up in 2004. Their goal is to help children discover the joy of reading, in a language that they understand.
Thanks
Logesh
