Rails 2.3.5 Upgrade Complete

I've completed the upgrade of Freehub to Rails 2.3.5. The major work
in this upgrade was switching to using the time zone support
introduced in Rails 2.1. I’m hoping that this upgrade will make it
easier for new developers to get up and running with Freehub more
easily and for me and others to add new features. Woohoo!
The master branch in GitHub is now the 2.3.5 version. The 2.0.2
version is tagged as ‘rails_2.0.2’ for anyone who needs that.
http://freehub.bikekitchen.org on Engine Yard is now running the 2.3.5
version.
Now for some feature development. I'm going to be adding people tags soon.

I was thinking about the tagging idea this morning. My original thought
for it would be to assign people to arbitrary groups. For instance, we
have some kind of de facto groups like "core mechanic" "board member"
"EAB volunteer". Okay, maybe board member is official and not de facto,
but you see what I mean.
Were you thinking tags would be persistent on a person, or attached to
the visit? If it's attached to the person, I would think maybe a group
system would make more sense. I can't think of any coded need for the
group system for us, but I imagine it would encompass things like having
different services available to check on a visit, or different roles
they can fill.
Just a thought. I'd like to hear a little more about what you had in
mind for it. I think a few of us will be hanging around IRC from like

Sorry I missed you on IRC.
I was thinking tags would be on a person. For the SFBK, we will use
them in much the same way as you describe. The obvious tags for us
are:
Board Member
Staff
Key Holder
Mechanic
Greeter
Youth Program
but there are others that could come up ad hoc like:
troublemaker
owes money
...
It seems that there are two needs that can be served here. One is
effectively labeling people so that when you look at their record in
Freehub you know something else about them. This is your "encompass
things like having different services available to check on a visit,
or different roles they can fill." The second is to provide a
mechanism for finding people later that meet criteria specific to your
organization. That's like "show me all the key holders so I can make
sure they are still active volunteers otherwise I need to ask for
their keys back."
'tag' may not be the appropriate name for this. 'label' or 'group' may
be more appropriate. However 'group' implies something bigger to me - that it
would have attributes, relationships or behaviors of its own. 'tag' or
'label' seems lighter weight.
I implemented a very simple first pass this weekend and checked it in
to GitHub in the 'tags' branch. For now, you just edit tags in a text
field on Person: Edit and see them in the upper right of the main
person page. Clicking on a tag there lists all people with that tag.
This is by no means the final implementation I am imagining - just
wanted to get something up that would round trip the full
functionality so I could play with it. If I keep going in this
direction, additional features would be:
- add/remove tags from main person page
- show list of existing tags when adding tag
- search for people by tag, any of a list of tags, all of a list of tags
- richer view than existing People Report for lists of people
- export people tagged with ...
How does this line up (or not) with your thoughts?
