Intothe Badlands is an American action drama television series that premiered on November 15, 2015, on AMC.[1] Into the Badlands has been described as "a high-octane sci-fi martial arts series"[2] and as a "post-apocalyptic drama".[citation needed] The series follows a warrior and a young boy who journey through a dangerous feudal land together seeking enlightenment.[3] On February 9, 2019, AMC canceled the show after three seasons.[4] The series finale aired on May 6, 2019.[5]

Approximately five hundred years from now, war has left civilization in ruins. A few elements of technology, such as electricity and ground vehicles, have survived the apocalypse, but society now shuns firearms and relies on melee weaponry and crossbows.

In a territory known as the Badlands, encompassing several states located between the Rocky Mountains and Mississippi River,[6] a feudal society has developed to fill the power vacuum left by the war. Barons control land and monopolies over commodities like opium and fuel, trading amongst themselves to maintain the peace. Each baron is served by slaves called "cogs", as well as a prostitute class called "dolls". A baron maintains power through an army of young men and women called clippers: highly trained and loyal warriors, clippers are forbidden from marrying and having children lest their loyalties be divided. Each clipper force is captained by a regent.

A few groups exist outside the hierarchy imposed by the barons. Nomads are the most common, most of them bandits who steal from trade convoys between the baronies, while others live in organized clans. The River King controls water trade and is considered a neutral party in the barons' power struggles. An ascetic religious movement called the Totemists lives in isolated communities and practices a form of idol worship. The Widow leads a revolutionary group of anti-feudal fighters from her late husband's barony; although recognized as a baron by her peers, they do not respect her, and the contempt is mutual.

Little is known of the world beyond the Badlands, but it is implied that it is far less politically stable yet environmentally sound like the Badlands. The mythical utopian city of Azra is believed to exist outside the Badlands, but most dismiss it as a legend.

Described as a "genre-bending martial arts series", the story is loosely based on the classic Chinese tale Journey to the West. AMC ordered six one-hour-long episodes of the action-drama developed by AMC Studios for a premiere in late 2015.[44] Executive producer Stephen Fung also serves as the series' action director alongside veteran Hong Kong choreographer, Ku Huen-chiu.[45] AMC renewed the show for a 10-episode second season, which premiered on March 19, 2017.[46] On April 25, 2017, AMC renewed the series for a 16-episode third season which premiered nearly a year later on April 22, 2018.[47]

Internationally, the series premiered in Australia on November 17, 2015, on Showcase.[52] In Germany, Austria, Italy, and the UK, the series is available through Amazon Prime Instant Video with each episode accessible the day after the U.S. air date.[53] BBC America began airing double episodes on August 20, 2016, at 10pm ET.[54][failed verification] [55]

The first season received mixed reviews from critics. The review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes reported a 54% approval rating with an average rating of 4.72/10 based on 39 reviews. The website's critical consensus reads, "Into the Badlands is loaded with off-kilter potential that's left largely unfulfilled -- although its well-choreographed action sequences should satisfy martial arts fans."[59] Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned a score of 54 out of 100 based on 29 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews".[60]

Tim Goodman of The Hollywood Reporter gave a generally positive review and wrote, "AMC finds a bloody, fun and entertaining non-zombie counterpart to The Walking Dead and turns Sundays into an escapist red zone."[63] Maureen Ryan of Variety wrote,

The action scenes scattered throughout Into the Badlands are not just stirringly presented, they represent a test passed with flying, and bloody, colors. This efficient AMC series is an homage to classic Samurai films and kinetic action fare churned out by Hong Kong maestros of furious fists, and if the TV drama had failed to meet the standards set by the sturdiest examples of those genres, it would have seemed superfluous at best. Fortunately, star Daniel Wu is more than up to the task of occupying the center of this streamlined story of vengeance, tyranny and roundhouse kicks.[64]

A map posted on the AMC social media page finally gives us context to the world and where we are, which is basically the former United States, and you can get a good look at how the Barons territories are split up.

Sunny ends up meeting Bajie (Nick Frost), who has been to the badlands and knows how to get back. In fact he even knows that Sunny is a clipper and his former baron was Quinn. This dangerous piece of knowledge proves to be troublesome for Sunny.

The workers get a fight night, similar to a thunder dome match (two men enter, one man leaves in a body bag). This gives Sunny some ideas. As the season continues both Sunny and Bajie trek the land to find their way back into the badlands and into more trouble.

Meanwhile we get to see MK doing some fight training with a mysterious group of people that we can only assume are the same ones who kidnapped him. It is interesting to note that each of the boys is paired up with a girl. This is the first time that we get to see a larger group of kids who all have the same ability as MK. He has a conversation with one of them who tells him that he was considered a god among his people and he gladly would cut himself to turn in order to protect his clan.

The thing to remember about Into The Badlands is the fact that in 2 seasons we have had a total of 16 episodes, barely a full season order. Considering that, it is amazing the amount of ground we have covered in such a short time. Season 2 gave us a much-needed expansion into the story with new characters and locations. The use of vivid colors to divide up the factions has been a staple of the series. It has also been used to give us a sense of good versus evil which is a very blurred line in this world.

The first few episodes do not heavily focus on MK as they did in season 1, which is a good thing for the series. MK is an important part of the story but there is so much more to flesh out for other characters and the world itself. The writers do a good job of giving us a taste of all the various groups and locations in season 2: Sunny and Bajie, MK and the monks, Vale and Quinn, The barons in the badlands.

The plus side is that we will be getting a new season and even more episodes. Now that we will have a full season coming up, we will have more episodes to really flesh out the stories. Season 2 was not perfect. However, it was exactly the progression and improvements we wanted and expected out of season 1. Beyond the fight scenes and excellent use of color, Into The Badlands is also a great example of representation on TV. Plus our female leads are not portrayed as weak or unable to fight back. They are some of the most powerful and influential characters in the show. We highly recommend you stick around and watch Into The Badlands season 3.

News of Into the Badlands ending after season 3 was met with a great deal of disappointment from fans, but didn't necessarily come as a shock. Ratings had been in decline for a while, but not because the stories have been suffering. The problem is more than likely rooted in AMC's lack of enthusiasm for the series, which saw a significant drop after season 1.

AMC's post-apocalyptic martial arts drama Into the Badlands premiered in late 2015 with a six-episode first season. AMC announced in February that Into the Badlands would not be renewed for a fourth season - though some may have seen the news coming, considering how long it took AMC to announce a return date for season 3. The first half of the season premiered in April of last year, and wrapped up in June. AMC gave no details about when the back half of the season would air, with many simply assuming that it would be back sometime in the fall. It wasn't until last month that fans finally received an update on the show's return. The break between the midseason finale and the midseason finale is unusually large; it's been a little less than a year since season 3 first aired.

It's become increasingly obvious that AMC's interest in the show is incredibly low, which is in stark contrast to AMC's attitude toward the show in season 1. Prior to airing, AMC heavily marketed the series, and tried to use The Walking Dead's success to help make it a hit by flooding the show with Into the Badlands ads. At the time, The Walking Dead was in the middle of its fifth season and still at the height of its popularity.

Into the Badlands was sandwiched between The Walking Dead and Talking Dead, in the hopes that some of the former's 14 million viewers would stick around and watch Into the Badlands during the wait for the after-show. It was a good strategy, and it paid off -- at least to a certain degree. Season 1 of Into the Badlands did receive a sizable ratings bump from The Walking Dead, but its ratings sharply declined as soon as The Walking Dead went into its midseason hiatus.

On top of mountains of advertising, AMC also promoted Into the Badlands with Kung Fu Fridays. Leading up to the series premiere, AMC aired weekly marathons of kung fu movies starring Jackie Chan and Donnie Yen for two months. AMC even shared a video of Chan himself giving the show his stamp of approval.
