Friday Film: if....
if.... is a 1968 British drama film produced and directed by Lindsay
Anderson satirizing English public school life. Famous for its
depiction of a savage insurrection at a public school, the film is
associated with the 1960s counterculture movement because it was
filmed by a long-standing counter-culture director at the time of the
student uprisings in Paris in May 1968. It includes controversial
statements, such as: "There's no ... such thing as a wrong war.
Violence and revolution are the only pure acts". It features
surrealist sequences throughout the film. Upon release in the UK, it
received an X certificate.
The film stars Malcolm McDowell in his first screen role and his first
appearance as Anderson's "everyman" character Mick Travis. Richard
Warwick, Christine Noonan, David Wood, and Robert Swann also star, and
Rupert Webster is featured as the young boy Bobby Phillips.
if.... won the Palme d'Or at the 1969 Cannes Film Festival. In 2004,
the magazine Total Film named it the sixteenth greatest British film
of all time.

Is the Labour Party a good vehicle for the Left?
Few issues divide the British left quite as much as the Labour Party.
Some love it. Some loathe it. Some grudgingly accept it as the worst
of a bad lot. This, despite the fact that we all have approximately
similar views for a better Britain: a more egalitarian, more
compassionate country, where wealth, opportunity, and prosperity are
in the hands of the many, not the few. But who’s right? Those who have
long since given up on the Labour Party think any concession to
neoliberalism is a step too far: an unforgivable scar on its
conscience. Those who still vote Labour, and campaign for Labour,
believe that the party is the Left’s crucial link to the political
mainstream: the only area where change will ever happen. At its core
is a debate about ideals and reality: and how you combine the two.
Join us for should be a stimulating, provocative, and potentially
quite heated discussion…

Eyewitness Egypt
Deryck de Maine Beaumont has just returned to Glasgow after a month
long visit to Egypt specifically to find out about and learn from the
revolution. He was meeting people, sitting in Tahrir Sq, and filming
what was going on.
Most importantly he wants to discuss with us what we can learn from
Egypt and what we can do for them.
He will be showing a short film he made whilst there, and then we will
have a question and answer session.
He says "Egypt is essentially a revolution by the people for the
people. Will it keep the momentum going? What are their worries? Until
now the idea of free elections was pure fantasy - now they have 6
months to learn all about elections. Their enthusiasm is palpable and
infectious. There are still occasional clamp downs by the army but the
people still trust their army. They continually have to work out where
it is all going. It was changing even while I was there and growing
organically."
