Roger,
Nice to hear from you. Hopefully your Freehand will keep working for a long time, but we are making progress on "the next one"! Here are three things that have happened in the past couple of years to get the Freehand "back"...
First, we set up a non-profit and for-profit partnership. We hope this arrangement will protect us from the sudden change of direction that NeuroControl made. The non-profit is called the "Institute for Function Restoration". Here is their website:
Second, we developed a new version of the technology that we call the "Networked Neuroprosthesis" (NNP). We implanted the first two people with this new system last year, and we have more implants scheduled in the next few months. It seems to be working well. The key thing is that everything is internal - nothing to tape to the chest during use. It does have rechargeable batteries, so those have to get recharged, but otherwise it is totally inside the body. We think that's a big advantage. Here is some information about that system:
Third, I know coming to the USA - to Cleveland - would be a long trip. Eventually we will get this back out more broadly...probably US first before we spread to UK. But, in the meantime, we do have a spectacular new place for people to stay while they get the new NNP implanted and get training for it. People can stay there for up to six months for free while they participate in the study and get the NNP. So - at least it is an option, though certainly not without significant hardships. The house was originally called "MetroHouse", although it's real name will "Zubizarreta House" in honor of the donor. It will open it's doors in about a month. Here is a bit more information about that:
So...we have not given up!!! It's just taken us quite a while to get these pieces together. I think the momentum is picking up, though.
