I have checked my settings, and I have the Express Scribe set to system-wide hotkeys. However, they keyboard I have is brand new, and the F "function" keys that are used for the hotkeys have a dual usage. Volume up and down, rewind, play and pause, fast forward, search, among a few others are the secondary uses of some of these F keys.

When I am within the Express Scribe box and the window is activated, the hot keys work just fine, using the second function for the F key. (What I mean by this, for example, is F4 on my keyboard has a secondary use for play/pause. However, Express Scribe is set for F4 to stop and F9 to play. The F9 key has a secondary use for the "search" feature for my windows 10. When the express scribe box is active, the F4 key works to start and stop the audio, F9 does not play the audio, it in fact, pulls up the computer wide search box from the windows start menu. F4, however, works properly as it's secondary function for start/stop.)

When the window is not active, but is displayed over my Word document, F4 actually serves to start and stop the Udemy program I am using to learn this, it does not do anything for the Express Scribe audio.

I'm not super experienced with IT issues, but I've checked just about every setting I can personally think to check. It's almost as if the "secondary" use for these F "function" keys at the top of the keyboard are actually the primary use, and I am not able to figure out how to make the "function" part of the use for them the primary use. I have no idea how to simplify the issue to google it either! I have checked into settings for the keyboard and settings for the program, and I can't figure out how to adjust this setting, if it's even possible.

I should note: I also tried holding down control and alt to see if some combo of this would work, similar to when you're trying to use a special character on a dual use number key. This did not work either. lol helpp!

I'm having this same problem RIGHT now and need help. Express Scribe will ONLY play when I'm actively in the program, even if I do the above steps, when I'm in Word to type, it still won't play- it won't play using a foot pedal OR hot keys OR the integrated media keys on the keyboard. This has only been a problem with the new laptop I'm using- it has worked without issue for the last 14 years on many other machines. I'm incredibly frustrated and CANNOT work without a resolution.

Have you tried reinstalling the program and see if that helps with your issue? If not you can try going to START > SETTINGS > SYSTEM > from the pane on the left click on SOUND > then from the pane on the right click on the SOUND CONTROL PANEL > on the window that opens go to PLAYBACK > right-click on the device you have set as default for playback and choose PROPERTIES > ADVANCED tab > check the options under EXLUSIVE MODE section and click APPLY > OK and then OK again and test one more time. If the issue persists then you might want to contact NCH Technical Support here:

I have been using Express Scribe for years, but got a new laptop yesterday, and now, even though I have checked the box for 'float above other windows'', which it does, sort of, the controls don't work once I click onto the Word document to type. The Express box is 'unhighlighted', if that makes sense, greyed out.

I am also having this problem since getting a new laptop, and nothing I've tried is working. I cannot get express scribe to run in the background at all. I've scoured the internet, the user manual, forums, nothing is fixing this. Please can someone help?

You can try to enable Express Scribe mini while working on MS Word. Click on View then select "Float Above Other Windows" and "Show Express Scribe Mini Control" - you can also use the shortcut key CTRL+M.

I have recently had it occur where ES worked by itself but not in Word. After fruitless searching for a remedy, I found that first opening/running Word as administrator and then opening/running ES as administrator did the trick.

Comments:It is simple to deliver great transcribing assignments when you use Express Scribe. If you're looking for an easy-to-use transcription tool, Express scribe is the way to go. It is reasonably priced, professionally grade, and performs everything it is supposed to do.

The fact that it's a one-time purchase rather than a subscription appeals to me the most. The software also comes with a fair trial period, which is helpful for getting a feel for it before purchasing. It's a simple and easy-to-use program. This site can make your transcription journey smoother and accurate. It contains a lot of features that make transcription faster and easier. The foot pedal feature is appealing to most transcriptionists, which the site has tried to make seamless and hassle-free.

I wish there was an auto-correct tool in the editor, this eliminates the need for me to copy and paste my work into another application for editing and proofreading. Navigating the various options available can be difficult at times. It is not compatible with various operating systems, such as Linux, and as a result, it can be difficult to access if you use one.

Comments:Generally, I think express scribe is the best software for transcribing. No tool can much up to the functionality that comes with it. I would advice an upcoming transcriber to give it a shot.

My most favorite thing about Express Scribe is that it has many features that help you work faster. Some of this features include shortcuts for starting/stopping the audio, rewinding, forwarding, playing fast speed, playing slow speed. I think my favorite feature is the setting that allows you to 'auto backstep on stop.' This allows you to automatically rewind a word or two from where you left off. I have always loved this feature because it allows you to have a smooth continuity as you are transcribing. making you work faster.Another thing I like about Express Scribe is that it easy to use. The software is less than 1 MB and the process of installing it is very starting forward and first. Once you have it installed, it is just a matter of dragging and dropping an audio file into the, and you can begin transcribing immediately.Since Express scribe is a desktop application, you do not need an internet connection to use the software. As a transcriber, this can significantly reduce your data costs.

The challenge I have always had with Express Scribe is that some of its shortcuts interfere with the application's shortcuts on your machine. For example, in Microsoft Powerpoint, the key F5 is for switching to slide mode but it doesn't work if Express Scribe is on since the same key is a shortcut to do something else in Express Scribe.Another challenge with Express Scribe is that the writing interface doesn't have auto correct options like those of word. This forces you to copy paste your work to another application for editing and proofreading.

I could not get the reverse F7 button to reverse, nor could I get the button on my foot pedal to reverse. I had to buy the program again (fourth time in ten years) because I bought a new computer. I had several email exchanges with several different tech support people and followed all their instructions. When I requested a link to an older version 9.11 as opposed to 10.05, they stopped replying to my emails completely. When you purchase a product it should work, no matter what the price. I am now using FTW Transcription.

I think Express Scribe is the ultimate tool for transcribers because of its numerous and powerful features. I like Express scribe because it has so many settings which help you make the process of transcribing easy. Examples of such settings include the sub-tab for 'playback' where you can specify settings for either playing 'increasing speed' or 'constant speed,' 'default slow playback speed,' 'default fast playback speed,' 'autobackstep on stop,' among other settings.Another cool thing about Express Scribe is the numerous shortcuts which help you work faster. F9 is for playing, F4 for stopping, F7 for rewinding, F8 For fast forwarding, among other shortcuts. These shortcuts are really awesome. I don't know what I would do without the shortcuts.Another advantage of Express scribe is that it is easy to integrate it with other software for more functionality. For example, you can connect Express Scribe with software that converts audio to text. Your work will be easier since the only thing you need to do is edit the transcript that has been done with the software.

The disadvantage of Express Scribe is that the interface offered by the software for typing is not the best since it doesn't help in proofreading. Like it doesn't show you misspelled words and other corrections like Microsoft Word does. I actually don't use the interface anymore. I use Express Scribe for everything else but when it comes to typing out my transcripts, I use Microsoft Word. In short, I use Express Scribe and Microsoft Word simultaneously.Another challenge with Express scribe is that it is not free. They only offer a trial period for the software. After the trial period, you have to pay for the software.

Express Scribe, a versatile transcription software, has received praise for its ability to handle a wide range of file formats, making it an invaluable tool for transcription companies. Users have found Express Scribe to be easy-to-use and reliable, delivering accurate transcriptions as expected. Despite some negative feedback, many users have been using the software for years without major issues, highlighting its reliability. The software has effectively solved the problem of inaccurate machine transcription and has enabled highly accurate transcripts and informed recommendations.

Express Scribe has been instrumental in saving time and improving data collection for transcription services. It is described as a simple and user-friendly program with customizable shortcuts and compatibility with USB pedals, enhancing the user experience. This makes it suitable for various use cases such as transcribing interviews, work meetings, and translating research data. Moreover, Express Scribe has significantly improved patient-physician interactions by reducing the need for typing during appointments.
