Announcing the Online Release of the documentary “The Rights of The Dead” by Tricia Yeoh.
The Rights of The Dead, a documentary by Tricia Yeoh about the case of the late Teoh Beng Hock who died in custody under the watch of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, will be released today for free viewing online. The documentary is one of the three FreedomFilmFest 2012 documentaries that won the Justin Louis Human Rights Award, accompanied with a grant of RM6,000 that allowed the film to be made.
The 28-minute short documentary tells the story of Teoh Beng Hock’s tragic death and the impact it has had on his family. It explores the rights of people who die in custody, and how it is the system of government and politics that is responsible for ensuring justice for its citizens through a robust legal system. In a democracy, people have the right to expect all institutions’ independence, working fairly to protect its citizens in time of need.
“The documentary is my personal journey as an ex-colleague who was the liaison officer in charge of handling the case on behalf of the state government, and ultimately hopes to show that because of the system’s failure, this could have happened to any one of us Malaysians”, says documentary director Tricia Yeoh. “It is my personal hope that by making the documentary easily available for online viewing, Malaysians all over the country – and across the globe – will use the opportunity to watch, spread, share, talk about, download and even burn copies for their friends and relatives, so that the story of Teoh Beng Hock will never be forgotten.”
A Google Hangout (viewed live on Youtube.com) will be conducted on Friday, 18 th Jan. 2013
at 9pm with director Tricia Yeoh, Teoh Lee Lan (the sister of Beng Hock) and other invited guests
