1)  Myanmar: Junta releasing four foreigners in broad political prisoner amnesty
Source: Associated Press

“Myanmar’s military-controlled government announced Thursday it was releasing and deporting an Australian academic, a Japanese filmmaker, an ex-British diplomat and an American as part of a broad prisoner amnesty to mark the country’s National Victory Day. Australian Sean Turnell, Japan’s Toru Kubota, Briton Vicky Bowman, and American Kyaw Htay Oo, as well as 11 local Myanmar celebrities, were among a total of 5,774 prisoners who were being released, Myanmar’s state-run MRTV reported. … According to the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners, a rights monitoring organization, 16,232 people have been detained on political charges in Myanmar since the army ousted the democratically elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi in February last year.” (11/17/22)

2)  North Korea: Regime warns US of “fiercer” military action, tests short-range missile
Source: CNN

“North Korea tested a ballistic missile on Thursday as it warned the United States of a ‘fiercer military counteraction’ to Washington’s bolstered defense [sic] ties with South Korea and Japan amid rising regional tensions. In a statement carried by the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui said the US’[s] strengthening of extended deterrence [sic] to allies in the region ‘is gambling for which it will certainly regret.’ The greater the US defense [sic] presence in the region, ‘the fiercer (North Korean) military counteraction will be, in direct proportion to it,’ Choe said. … The KCNA statement said the warning was in response to trilateral talks between the US, South Korea, and Japan on Sunday during the ASEAN summit. ” (11/17/22)

3)  Marriage protection act clears key US Senate hurdle
Source: Axios

“The Respect for Marriage Act, a bill to codify protections for same-sex and interracial marriage, on Wednesday cleared a major procedural hurdle in the Senate after garnering enough support from Senate Republicans. A motion to proceed to debate on the bill passed 62-37, more than the 60 votes needed to break a Senate filibuster, signaling the legislation has the support to pass the chamber. A dozen Senate Republicans voted with all Democrats to pass the bill.” (11/16/22)

4)  Iran: Regime courts order more political prisoners murdered
Source: BBC News [UK state media]

“Four people have been sentenced to death on the charge of ‘enmity against God’ in connection with the recent anti-government protests in Iran. Revolutionary Courts in Tehran said one of the unnamed ‘rioters’ hit and killed a policeman with his car, the judiciary’s Mizan news agency said. The second possessed a knife and a gun, and the third blocked traffic and caused ‘terror,’ it alleged. The fourth was convicted of a knife attack, Mizan reported late on Tuesday. Human rights activists condemned the death sentences — which brought the total to five since Sunday — saying they were the results of unfair trials. … At least 348 protesters have been killed and 15,900 others arrested in a crackdown by security forces on what Iran’s leaders have portrayed as foreign-backed ‘riots,’ according to the Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), which is also based outside the country.” (11/16/22)

5)  US House Passes Limits On Sexual Harassment NDAs
Source: Deadline

“A law that would limit employers’ use of non disclosure agreements to keep victims of sexual harassment silent overwhelmingly passed the House on Wednesday and now will head to President Joe Biden for signing. The legislation is a next step from a law Biden signed earlier this year that ended forced arbitration in such cases. The president is expected to sign the new bill. … The bill only applies to instances before a dispute arises, not afterward, and does not cover other workplace misconduct like age and race discrimination. The bill also would not apply to NDAs signed as part of settlements of sexual harassment lawsuits …. Instead, the legislation covers the kind of ‘forced’ NDAs that employees face as conditions of employment.” (11/16/22)

6)  McConnell defeats Scott, will remain US Senate minority leader
Source: The Hill

“Senate Republicans voted Wednesday to elect Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) as their leader over National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman Rick Scott (R-Fla.), who announced his desire to replace McConnell at an acrimonious conference meeting Tuesday. A large majority of GOP senators voted to elect McConnell leader after a motion backed by Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and other conservatives to delay the leadership election until after the Dec. 6 Georgia Senate runoff failed. McConnell received 37 votes while Scott received 10 votes. One senator voted present. … Scott’s last-minute challenge to McConnell represented the toughest competition the senior Republican senator has faced for the top leadership job since he became Senate minority leader in 2007.” (11/16/22)

7)  OH: Chinese national faces sentencing in US aviation spying case
Source: SFGate

“A Chinese national convicted of trying to steal trade secrets from multiple U.S. aviation and aerospace companies, including the theft of proprietary airplane engine fan technology, is due to be sentenced Wednesday, with prosecutors seeking a 25-year prison term. Yanjun Xu’s attorneys say such a sentence would be far too harsh and that the just under five years he’s served since his arrest is sufficient punishment. Federal Judge Timothy Black in Cincinnati will decide Xu’s sentence. The government alleges that beginning in December 2013, Xu recruited experts who worked at aviation companies, including GE Aviation in Cincinnati.” (11/16/22)

8)  US Mortgage Rates Drop Below 7% in Biggest Decline Since July
Source: Bloomberg

“US mortgage rates fell last week by the most since the end of July, slipping below 7% and helping generate a bounce in purchase applications that otherwise remain depressed. The contract rate on a 30-year fixed mortgage decreased 24 basis points to 6.9% in the week ended Nov. 11, according to Mortgage Bankers Association data released Wednesday. The group’s index of applications to buy a home rose 4.4% — the most since June — but is still near the weakest level since 2015.” (11/16/22)

9)  MI: Council race settled by two pieces of paper
Source: ABC News

“The election to fill a city council seat in a Michigan town was settled by drawing two pieces of paper from a bowl, days after a 616-616 tie. The new council member in Rogers City: Timeen Adair, whose paper said ‘elected’. Brittany VanderWall’s paper said ‘not elected.’ There were hugs by the pair Monday — and no hard feelings, The Alpena News reported. ‘I told people, either way, Rogers City wins,’ VanderWall said before the drawing. Adair said the Election Day tie meant the northern Michigan town, population 2,800, should be satisfied with both candidates. ‘The people have spoken, and they said, ‘Eh, either one,” Adair said.” [editor’s note: I wonder how RCV might have affected this one – SAT] (11/16/22)

10) UK: Spacey to Be Charged With Seven More Sexual Offenses
Source: Variety

“The U.K.’s Crown Prosecution Service has said that actor Kevin Spacey will be charged with a further seven sexual offenses. The new charges span three offenses of indecent assault, three offenses of sexual assault and one offense of causing a person to engage in sexual activity without consent. They are all in relation to one male complainant, and the alleged assaults span a period from 2001 to 2004. Spacey is already set to stand trial in the U.K. in June 2023 for five counts of sexual assault. … The fresh charges against Spacey come almost a month after a New York jury sided with him in a $40 million civil lawsuit, finding that the Oscar winner did not molest actor Anthony Rapp when he was a teenager and is not liable for battery.” (11/16/22)

11) Musk testifies in lawsuit over Tesla compensation package
Source: SFGate

“Tesla CEO Elon Musk took the witness stand Wednesday to defend himself in a shareholder lawsuit challenging a compensation package he was awarded by the company’s board of directors that is potentially worth more than $55 billion. Musk denied that he dictated terms of the compensation package or attended any meetings at which the plan was discussed by the board, its compensation committee, or a working group that helped develop it. ‘I was entirely focused on the execution of the company,’ he said. Plaintiff’s attorney Greg Varallo spent much of his early cross-examination trying to draw Musk into admitting that he controls Tesla to such an extent that he can sway the board to do his bidding. Among other things, Varallo questioned Musk about his title of ‘Technoking,’ a role that Musk has previously noted comes with ‘panache’ and ‘great dance moves.'” (11/16/22)

12) Judge blocks US regime from expelling migrants under Title 42 policy
Source: CBS News

“A federal judge on Tuesday barred federal immigration authorities from using a public health authority known as Title 42 to swiftly expel migrants, blocking the main tool the Biden administration has used to manage an unprecedented migration wave along the U.S.-Mexico border. Judge Emmet Sullivan of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia voided an order issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that has allowed U.S. border officials to expel hundreds of thousands of migrants on public health grounds, saying the edict was not properly enacted. First issued in 2020 by the Trump administration at the outset of the coronavirus pandemic, the Title 42 policy relies on a late 19th century law designed to stop the ‘introduction’ of contagious diseases in the U.S. Migrants processed under Title 42 are not allowed to request U.S. asylum and are instead summarily expelled from the country.” (11/15/22)

13) Senate Report, Hearing Confirm “Systematic Medical Abuse” of Migrant Women in ICE Detention
Source: Common Dreams

“After 18 months of bipartisan investigation, the United States Senate on Tuesday published a report and held a hearing on the medical abuse of women jailed in Georgia by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, which has been accused of covering up the widespread mistreatment by deporting survivors and witnesses. The report, which pertains specifically to ICE’s Irwin County Detention Center (ICDC) in Ocilla, Georgia, was written by the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs’ Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, which is chaired by Sen. Jon Ossoff (D-Ga.). The subcommittee investigated numerous allegations of medical abuse at the private prison — which is owned by LaSalle Southeast LLC — including alleged ‘high rates’ of forced hysterectomies performed by Dr. Mahendra Amin, excessive and unnecessary gynecological procedures, medical neglect, and other mistreatment.” (11/16/22)

14) Oil tanker hit by armed drone off coast of Oman
Source: Al Jazeera [Qatar state media]

“An oil tanker associated with an Israeli billionaire has been struck by a bomb-carrying drone off the coast of Oman, an official has told the Associated Press. The attack happened on Tuesday night off the coast of Oman, the Middle East-based defence official said. The official spoke on Wednesday on condition of anonymity as they did not have authorisation to discuss the attack publicly. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations, a British military organisation in the region monitoring shipping, told the AP: ‘We are aware of an incident and it’s being investigated at this time.’ The official identified the vessel attacked as the Liberian-flagged oil tanker Pacific Zircon. That tanker is operated by Singapore-based Eastern Pacific Shipping, which is a company ultimately owned by Israeli billionaire Idan Ofer. … While no one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, suspicion has immediately fallen on Iran.” (11/16/22)

15) UK: MI5 claims Iranian regime organised ten kidnap and death plots
Source: BBC News [UK state media]

“There have been at least 10 potential threats by Iran to kidnap or kill British or UK-based people this year. The figure was revealed by the head of MI5, Ken McCallum, in his annual update on threats facing the UK. Mr McCallum also warned the UK ‘must be ready for Russian aggression for years to come.’ But he said Russia had suffered a strategic setback after a mass expulsion of its spies around the world in the wake of its invasion of Ukraine. ‘No one should be under any illusion about the breadth and variety of the threats we face in 2022,’ Mr McCallum told an audience inside Thames House, the security service’s London headquarters. He warned the biggest shifts his service was seeing came in threats posed by other states who were ‘not squeamish about the tactics they deploy.'” (11/16/22)

16) Dog Bites Man: Disgraced former president launches effort to re-elect Biden
Source: Associated Press

“Former President Donald Trump on Tuesday launched his third [sic] campaign for the White House just one week after a disappointing midterm showing for Republicans, forcing the party to again decide whether to embrace a candidate whose refusal to accept defeat in 2020 sparked an insurrection and pushed American democracy to the brink. ‘In order to make America great and glorious again, I am tonight announcing my candidacy for president of the United States,’ Trump said before an audience of several hundred supporters in a chandeliered ballroom at his Mar-a-Lago club, where he stood flanked by American flags and banners bearing his ‘Make America Great Again’ slogan.” [editor’s note: Fourth campaign, not third. “A new NBC Bay Area report about the assault on Paul Pelosi last month includes several of the same details in NBC News'[s] retracted national report that suggested Pelosi may not have been in immediate danger when police arrived prior to his attack. NBC News national correspondent Miguel Almaguer reported on Nov. 4 for ‘Today’ that police didn’t know they were responding to the Pelosi residence, Pelosi opened the door for police but didn’t attempt to escape or declare an emergency, and even walked away from law enforcement and toward his eventual attacker. 18) Kuwait: Regime employees kill seven prisoners
Source: Seattle Times

“Kuwait on Wednesday put to death seven prisoners in a rare mass execution in the small, oil-rich nation despite facing international criticism over its plans. The state-run KUNA news agency described those executed as all being convicted of premeditated murder and other charges in the sheikhdom. It identified those killed as three Kuwaiti men, one Kuwaiti woman, a Syrian man, a Pakistani man and an Ethiopian woman. Kuwait said the executions took place at its Central Prison. It did not identify the method it used to carry out the executions, though the sheikhdom typically hangs its condemned prisoners. However, it can use firing squads as well.” (11/16/22)

The corporate productivity company is laying off around 150 employees, citing ‘a restructuring plan intended to improve our operational efficiencies and operating costs and better align Asana’s workforce with current business needs.’ (A March SEC filing said that the company employed 1,666 employees at the end of January 2022.) 22) Resistant Jurors Can Help Protect Abortion Rights (No Matter What the Law Says)
Source: Reason
by JD Tuccille

“Americans worried about the status of reproductive rights earned a breather last week when voters amended several state constitutions to protect access to abortion and turned away ballot proposals to criminalize the practice. In the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision overturning federal protections for abortion access, those are incremental wins for pro-choicers. But the matter remains unresolved elsewhere. Among the tactics pro-choice advocates could adopt is one popular among champions of other controversial liberties: jury nullification.” (11/16/22)

23) The unipololar moment is over. When will the US get it?
Source: Responsible Statecraft
by Samuel Gardner-Bird

“Despite the National Security Strategy’s recent declaration that ‘the post-Cold War era is definitively over,’ the United States is still unwilling to state what the international system has become in its wake: increasingly multipolar. Rather than rethinking first order assumptions about foreign policy, the United States appears destined to press on its quest for global hegemony — committing thousands of troops to Europe, preparing for a ‘strategic competition’ with China in the Indo-Pacific, and rubber stamping a bloated military budget. Unfortunately, as yesterday’s panelists revealed, the rest of the world is unlikely to join in any U.S. crusade to ‘defend democracy’ or line up to support a ‘rules-based order’: a phrase riddled with too many inconsistencies to remain credible.” (11/15/22)

24) Governments Are Using Drones to Spy on Americans. Here’s How People Are Fighting Back
Source: Foundation for Economic Education
by Patrick Carroll

“Todd [Maxon] likes to fix up cars, and he keeps a number of vehicles on his property. For years the Township has been going after the couple for zoning violations, accusing them of illegally storing ‘junk’ on their property. But here’s the kicker. The cars can’t even be seen from outside the property … that is, unless you fly a drone overhead. And that’s exactly what the Township did. Without even attempting to get a warrant, the Township hired a contractor to fly a drone as low as 150 feet over the Maxons’ property multiple times over two years. The Township is now trying to use the pictures taken by the drone as evidence that the Maxons are violating a local zoning ordinance.” (11/16/22)

25) What’s Not in the CIA’s Still-Secret JFK Files
Source: Future of Freedom Foundation
by Jacob G Hornberger

“The deadline for the release of the CIA’s long-secret JFK-assassination records is rapidly approaching. The deadline is December 15. As I have previously predicted though, the CIA will demand that President Biden continue its cover-up of its November 22, 1963, regime-change operation, and President Biden will comply with that demand. There is no reasonable possibility that those 60-year-old records will be revealed to the public — ever. The notion that ‘national security’ would be grievously threatened is, of course, patently ludicrous. The United States will not fall into the ocean or even be taken over by the communists if the records are released.” (11/16/22)

26) With 108% Of Precincts Reporting, Katie Hobbs Projected To Win Arizona Governor’s Race
Source: Babylon Bee
by staff

“In a stunning outcome to a highly scrutinized race, Katie Hobbs, the charismatic leader and official vote counter of Arizona, has emerged victorious after 108% of the state’s voting precincts reported in. Though mathematicians were puzzled by the plausibility — and, indeed, possibility –of the results, Democrats were quick to hail Hobbs’s win as a victory for democracy itself. ‘We knew things looked really bad for weeks leading up to election night, what with abysmal approval ratings for our party, Americans feeling negatively about the overall direction of the country, and Ms. Hobbs being afraid to debate her opponent or even appear in public,’ said Hobbs’s campaign spokesperson Hailey Barber-Berger-Jorgensen. ‘But we felt very confident that once we got our vote tallies from all 108% of precincts, including those in other states and overseas, we would come out victorious.'” [editor’s note: Once again, “satire” (and conspiracy theory) today, truth in a few weeks? – SAT] (11/16/22)

“After the election, I saw a few bitter Republicans on social media blaming the failure of Republican candidates to get elected — the fizzled ‘red wave’ — on libertarians. It’s a silly complaint. Libertarian candidates don’t take votes from Republicans any more than they take votes from Democrats. Most people who vote for Libertarians aren’t going to vote for any of the other candidates no matter what. If I were a voter and I only had a choice between a Republican and a Democrat — and both advocated policies I couldn’t tolerate — I wouldn’t pick the lesser of two evils. I would reject them both, even if there were no Libertarian candidate on the ballot. I would rather stay home than vote for someone I don’t like or trust.” (11/16/22)

28) The “International Community” Is an Ineffectual Fantasy
Source: The Nation
by Rajan Menon

“Washington’s vaunted ‘rules-based international order’ has undergone a stress test following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and here’s the news so far: It hasn’t held up well. In fact, the disparate reactions to Vladimir Putin’s war have only highlighted stark global divisions, which reflect the unequal distribution of wealth and power. Such divisions have made it even harder for a multitude of sovereign states to find the minimal common ground needed to tackle the biggest global problems, especially climate change. In fact, it’s now reasonable to ask whether an international community connected by a consensus of norms and rules, and capable of acting in concert against the direst threats to humankind, exists.” (11/16/22)

29) Are Mitch McConnell’s Days Numbered?
Source: Washington Times
by Kelly Sadler

“An alternative to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell’s RINO dominance has finally emerged. On Tuesday, Florida Senator Rick Scott officially threw his hat in the ring to challenge Mr. McConnell for the GOP’s top leadership position. Mr. McConnell’s opposition is well-earned and deserved. Mr. McConnell prefers a conference he can control. His worst nightmare is having to deal with independent-minded, conservative Republicans who place their love of the nation above the power-grabbing, self-serving swamp. Mr. McConnell hated the tea party. He hates Trump. He loathes change and any threat to the party establishment. In August, Mr. McConnell’s-aligned super PAC Senate Leadership Fund (SLF) called off its advertisement reservations in the hotly contested race in Arizona. A month later Mr. McConnell canceled more than $9 million worth of ads for MAGA-endorsed Blake Masters, allowing him to be significantly outspent by incumbent Mark Kelly.” [editor’s note: McConnell quickly disposed of Scott – TLK] (11/16/22)

30) The Primacy of Liberty
Source: Law & Liberty
by Juliana Geran Pilon

“Is progress an unmitigated good? Not for everyone. As social arrangements shift, some benefit while others are uprooted. Scientific advances, especially in the short run, have often been ‘combined with that suffering which is inseparable from extensive changes in the condition of the people,’ observed the great English historian John Emerich Edward Dalberg, a.k.a., Lord Acton (1834-1902). Yet it is just such volatile events that occasion ‘men of speculative or imaginative genius’ to make matters far worse by dreaming up utopian societies reminiscent of ‘the legends of the golden age.’ Topping the list is the belief in a mythical aboriginal paradise of unlimited and unclaimed resources.” (11/16/22)

31) How Social Media Just Saved Democracy
Source: The Daily Beast
by Louis Anslow

“On the eve of the midterm elections, 60 Minutes broadcast a segment on China’s influence over TikTok. In it, the former Google engineer turned ‘tech-ethicist’ Tristan Harris posited that China was serving its youth wholesome ‘digital spinach’ via TikTok while giving America’s youth ‘digital opium.’ In Harris’[s] mind, Chinese communists were perpetuating what domestic capitalists had started, something his think tank, the Center for Humane Technology, insists is turning kids into depressed, stupid right-wing extremists — a narrative pushed by documentaries like The Social Dilemma. Just days later, America’s young voters — who live on social media — helped destroy Republicans’ hopes of controlling Congress, and dealt what could be a death blow to Trumpism. How can this be? We were told that social media is destroying democracy, and that it’s all its fault that Donald Trump was elected in the first place six years ago.” (11/16/22)

32) Democrats, the problem is you, not Jay Jacobs
Source: New York Post
by Michael Goodwin

“Some people are slow learners. With New York Republicans flipping congressional and legislative seats and coming close to winning the governor’s office, Democrats should be engaged in soul searching about how their far-left[sic] policies alienated many voters. Instead, the far-left [sic] is blaming moderates for the party’s performance. The Getting It Backwards mob already found its sacrificial culprit, demanding that Gov. Hochul fire state party boss Jay Jacobs. They complain Jacobs ‘failed to commit the time, energy and resources necessary to maintain our deep-blue status.’ Appointed by former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, Jacobs has tangled with the left before and is fighting back, saying he won’t quit. Surprisingly, he has an ally in the current governor.” (11/15/22)

33) Is this the Time for Peace?
Source: Antiwar.com
by Ted Snider

“Putin’s sudden announcement that he will not attend the upcoming G-20 summit in Indonesia … and the sudden simultaneous announcement that Biden will meet Russia’s strategic partner, Chinese President Xi Jinping, on the sidelines of the summit could also suggest secret backchannel discussions. Could Zelensky be agreeing to talk if he gets a victory in Kherson, and is Russia agreeing to withdraw from Kherson to get talks? Some military analysts say that Ukraine will face tougher ground and greater logistical challenges as they move further east and that Kherson is likely the last Russian held ground that Ukraine will be able to retake in the foreseeable future. Is this the moment at which the war stalls into a stalemate or Russia decides to escalate? Could the US be pushing for diplomacy at the strongest moment and at the moment before a huge Russian push comes?” (11/16/22)

34) Manchin Decides to Torpedo Permitting Reform
Source: The American Prospect
by David Dayen

“Angered by a pre-election presidential swipe at the coal industry, Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) has taken a hostage. Revealingly, that hostage is a chief architect within the executive branch of energy permitting reforms, which is supposedly a top priority of Manchin’s. (He recently sponsored a reform package that Republicans blocked.) Late last week, Politico reported that Manchin would not hold a nomination hearing for Richard Glick, the current chair of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). Glick’s term expired in June, and without confirmation by the end of the year, he would have to step down from FERC, leaving the agency deadlocked between Democrats and Republicans. That could stall out the work FERC is doing on accelerating the electricity transmission build-out, which is generally seen as among the biggest challenges to the green transition.” (11/16/22)

35) The Nineties: Our last decade of freedom?
Source: spiked
by Henry Williams

“There is a telling moment in former GQ editor Dylan Jones’s insider account of the 1990s, Faster Than a Cannonball: 1995 and All That. Loaded journalist Martin Deeson has gatecrashed a Cannes Film Festival party with his photographer in tow. ‘I ordered a large scotch, two gin and tonics, two glasses of champagne and then asked Derek what he wanted,’ recalls Deeson. The two journalists then staggered around rat-arsed chatting to various A-listers before bumping into Sixties style icon Terence Stamp: ‘After looking at me for a while Stamp said, ‘I just don’t think I want to talk to you,’ and walked away.’ Stamp’s dismissive reaction speaks volumes. It shows up the Nineties as the noisier, embarrassing and somewhat envious younger brother of the Sixties.” (11/16/22)

by Binoy Kampmark

“To get to where they are, imperial powers will deceive, dissimulate and distort. The US imperium, that most awesome of devilish powers, has tentacled itself across the globe, often unbeknownst to its own citizens. In a report released by the New York University School of Law’s Brennan Center of Justice titled Secret War: How the US Uses Partnerships and Proxy Forces to Wage War Under the Radar, there is little to shock, though much to be concerned about. The author of the report contends that the list of countries supplied by the Pentagon on US military partnerships is a savagely clipped one. The list is so wrong that 17 countries have been omitted.” (11/16/22)

37) Blame the Deep State for Carnage in Ukraine
Source: The American Conservative
by George D O’Neill Jr.

“From the onset of the Ukraine war, the corporate media, politicians, and all the controlled NGOs throughout America and Western Europe were lockstep in their claim that the Russian military action in eastern Ukraine was unprovoked and unjustified — an act of aggression that could not be allowed to stand. There was one problem with this propaganda blitz: it was totally untrue. The Deep State — the government elites, intelligence community, and the military establishment — has spent decades threatening and provoking Russia by pushing NATO up against their border. You do not have to like Russia to see this, and you can detest Vladimir Putin until the cows come home. The fundamental issue remains the same: the Russians view NATO on their border as an act of aggression and a threat to their national security, and we have known this for decades.” (11/16/22)

38) Elon Musk does everything with the door open
Source: Fox News
by Greg Gutfeld

“[S]peaking of rich people, let’s check in on Elon Musk, who may just be the best tweeter since Trump. It began Sunday with Musk tweeting about Twitter being super slow in other countries. That’s when a Twitter engineer called out the Musk tweet, adding, quote, ‘I have spent six years working on Twitter. I could say this is wrong.’ When someone pointed out you probably shouldn’t call out your boss publicly, he kept going. And that’s when Musk hit back, ‘He’s fired’. Well, now, if you don’t find that hilarious, then you’re not my friend and you’ve never fired anyone who really deserves it. It’s why I had a trap door installed in my office and hired a contractor who could keep a secret. But if I tweeted about how I run this show, I’d probably be arrested, possibly for murder.” (11/16/22)

39) Democrats Have Mastered Mail Balloting. Republicans Will Pay if They Fail to Step Up
Source: RealClearPolitics
by Salena Zito

“Although states such as Arizona and Oregon had been voting by mail forever — and for the most part, they did it quite well — then-President Donald Trump scoffed at it for his voters. While Democrats encouraged their voters to cast their ballots by mail, Trump discouraged it, warning that it was a vessel for voter fraud. That gave Democrats the advantage. Republicans in Pennsylvania and also across the country are still reeling from Tuesday’s disappointing finish. They say that if this is the new normal for voting going forward, then Republicans need to step up and get their voters to do the same — otherwise, they will find themselves on the wrong end of big elections going forward.” (11/15/22)

“Elon Musk has reignited the online free speech debate, declaring, ‘the bird is free’ after closing the deal to purchase Twitter. But Thierry Breton, the EU’s Commissioner for the Internal Market, quickly clapped back: ‘In Europe, the bird will fly by our rules.’ … The era of American-led technology innovation enabled unprecedented economic opportunity around the world and transformed the way billions of people work, learn, communicate, and engage with the world. It can be easy to take for granted just how much our lives have been enriched by the seamless ecosystem of connected apps, smart devices, and high-speed internet that was nothing more than science-fiction fantasy just a few decades ago. 41) Trump’s Running and Republicans Have Only Themselves to Blame
Source: The Atlantic
by David Frum

“The ancient Greeks told a story of a hero named Theseus, who ventured into the labyrinth to meet and defeat a terrible monster, the Minotaur. Theseus mustered his courage, grasped his weapon, fought and won. Theoretically, the hero could have waited for the monster to get bored and voluntarily retire from the monster business. But that is just an excuse for letting the monster win. Monsters don’t get bored; they don’t retire. Those who will not fight and defeat the monster suffer humiliation and destruction by the monster. That is the fate now facing a Republican elite whose only idea is to hide, shirk, and mutter. … The choices are fight or yield. Those have been the choices all along, and those are the choices again. If Republicans want a different outcome this time, then this time they’ll have to change their behavior.” (11/15/22)

42) They Keep Us Focused On Decoy Dichotomies
Source: Caitlin Johnstone, Rogue Journalist
by Caitlin Johnstone

“Westerners are taught that evil foreign ‘regimes’ don’t let their people criticize their government, meanwhile westerners themselves are trained to never criticize their government. They’re trained instead to criticize decoy dichotomies — false partisan nonsense — not the real power. Westerners are trained to criticize the actions of the other party or the beliefs of the other ideological faction, never the foreign or domestic policies which are fully supported by both parties. The power structure which maintains 99.9% of the same policies regardless of which party is officially in charge is the real government, but westerners are trained never to look there. They’re instead trained to fixate on a false two-handed puppet show diversion. Westerners say ‘Well I’d rather live here than China or Russia, because here I can criticize my government whenever I want!’ Okay. But you don’t.” (11/14/22)

Michael Crowley, a diplomatic correspondent for the New York Times, wrote of policy splits between the Biden administration and Colombia’s new president, Gustavo Petro, especially regarding their divergent views on the war on drugs. Although they do diverge, both Petro’s and Biden’s stances on the drug war have more similarities than differences — and they are both wrong, as they are oblivious to the drug trade’s market dynamics.” (11/15/22)

44) The puzzle of COVID and state capacity
Source: Niskanen Center
by Ed Dolan

“When COVID-19 first struck, many observers looked with dread toward its likely impact on poor countries. With fragile and often corrupt governments, weak public health systems, and inadequate medical resources, these nations seemed defenseless against the novel coronavirus. … As the months passed, however, a more ambiguous picture began to emerge. Writing in the New Yorker in early 2021, Siddhartha Mukherjee described what he called an ‘epidemiological mystery.’ Going by reported death rates, many poor countries like India and Nigeria seemed to be coping with the pandemic not less but more successfully than rich countries like Italy, Belgium, or the United States. 45) California’s Vaping Flavor Ban Could Be Lethal
Source: Town Hall
by Jacob Sullum

“The campaign for Proposition 31, a ballot initiative that Californians approved by a wide margin last week, urged voters to ‘protect kids from candy-flavored tobacco.’ That slogan packed an impressive amount of dishonesty into five words. The initiative’s main target was nicotine vaping products, which do not contain tobacco and were already legally restricted to adults. Proposition 31 decrees that adults may not buy such products in flavors other than tobacco, thereby undermining the most promising harm-reducing alternative to cigarettes. Proposition 31 was a referendum on S.B. 793, a 2020 law that restricts ‘characterizing flavors’ in ‘tobacco products.’ California counterintuitively defines ‘tobacco product’ to include ‘an electronic device that delivers nicotine,’ whether or not the nicotine is derived from tobacco.” (11/16/22)

46) Now the GOP can repent for the Trump era by denying him the nomination
Source: Washington Post
by George F Will

“Running for president in 1968, Alabama Gov. George Wallace thought he spotted a problem: ‘We got too much dignity in government.’ Thirteen presidential elections later, voters solved that problem. Now they can make amends by closing the Donald Trump parenthesis in U.S. history. The first, and almost certainly the last, public service for which he is actually responsible is his decision to run again. This gives the nation an occasion for self-correction. When the Republican nomination is denied to him, as is increasingly probable, he will, of course, pronounce the process rigged. By then, few will care. Among the Republican nominating electorate, Trump has a floor of forever Trumpers, but the floor is sagging.” (11/15/22)

47) Stop the Collective Punishment of the Iranian People

“[T]he most helpful and constructive thing that the U.S. could do right now is to provide the Iranian people with extensive sanctions relief. It is ordinary Iranians that have borne the brunt of our government’s economic war, and they will be the ones that benefit if the war is ended. We need to reject the conceit of sanctions advocates that they ‘stand with’ the people when they are the ones responsible for impoverishing and strangling them. Collective punishment is as far from solidarity with the Iranian people as it is possible to get, and no one interested in a freer Iran can be on board with keeping it under siege and trying to cut it off from doing business with the rest of the world.” (11/15/22)

49) The Good Years May Be Over, and Labor Didn’t Get Much
Source: In These Times
by Hamilton Nolan

“On January 20, 2021, Joe Biden was inaugurated as president, and an invisible clock started ticking. That clock has been measuring the window of opportunity: The time during which Democrats held the White House and both branches of Congress. History told us that window would probably be closing with the 2022 midterm elections. When you think back over the past two years, they may feel, subjectively, like a time of great chaos -- Covid, economic peril and great political struggles over democracy itself. Wrong! The last two years were the good times. The Democrats did better than expected in the midterms, but they appear likely to lose the House (thanks to gerrymandering). That’s all it will take to shut down the chance at any progressive legislation for the next two years.” (11/14/22)

50) Did Lockdowns Signify the “End of Abundance?”
Source: Brownstone Institute
by W Aaron Vandiver

“In this era of economic chaos, disrupted supply chains, ruinous inflation, a severe energy crunch in Europe, tensions between nuclear superpowers, and extreme political polarization, plus intense worries (in some quarters, at least) about climate change, there are emerging signs of a belief in the once unthinkable: the possibility that Progress with a capital ‘P’ may no longer be assured. It should be obvious at this point that Covid-19 lockdowns and related pandemic policies, including the printing of trillions of dollars to paper over the intentional disruption of society, played a major role in bringing about today’s negative economic conditions. These conditions could last a very long time, particularly considering the mild political blowback to Covid chaos that we saw during the midterm elections.” (11/15/22)
