1) Palestine: More than 40 dead in Israeli airstrikes on Gaza tent camp
Source: USA Today
“Israeli missiles set ablaze a tent camp for displaced Palestinians in southern Gaza, killing or wounding 65 people, the enclave’s civil emergency service said on Tuesday, in what the Israeli military called a strike on a Hamas command center. The Hamas-run Gaza government media office put the number of fatalities at more than 40. It said that at least 60 others were wounded in the strikes and many remained missing as rescue workers continued their searches early on Tuesday. Residents and medics said the tent encampment near Khan Younis in the Al-Mawasi area, which Israel has designated a humanitarian safe zone for displaced Palestinians, was struck by at least four missiles. The camp is crowded with families ordered by the Israeli military to flee there from elsewhere in the territory.” (09/10/24)

2) Russia: Moscow hit in biggest Ukrainian drone attack to date
Source: Reuters
“Ukraine struck the Moscow region on Tuesday in its biggest drone attack so far on the Russian capital, killing at least one woman, wrecking dozens of homes and forcing around 50 flights to be diverted from airports around Moscow. Russia, the world’s biggest nuclear power, said it destroyed at least 20 Ukrainian attack drones as they swarmed over the Moscow region, which has a population of more than 21 million, and 124 more over eight other regions. … Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has sought to insulate Moscow from the grinding rigours of the war, says the Ukrainian drone attacks are ‘terrorism’ as they target civilian infrastructure — and has vowed a response.” (09/10/24)

3) House Republicans push to link regime funding to citizenship check for new voters
Source: Associated Press
“House Speaker Mike Johnson is heeding the demands of the more conservative wing of his Republican conference and has teed up a vote this week on a bill that would keep the federal government funded for six more months and require states to obtain proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate or passport, when registering a person to vote. Congress needs to approve a stop-gap spending bill before the end of the budget year on Sept. 30 to avoid a government shutdown just a few weeks before voters go the polls and elect the next president. Johnson’s decision to combine the proof of citizenship mandate with government funding complicates prospects for getting that task done. The bill is not expected to go anywhere in the Democratic-controlled Senate, if it even makes it that far.” (09/09/24)

4) UK: Musk faces possible summons before parliament over X’s refusal to censor for regime
Source: Financial Times [UK]
“Elon Musk will be asked by the UK parliament to give evidence about the operations of social media platform X under plans drawn up by a leading contender to become chair of a key panel of MPs. Labour politician Dawn Butler, who is vying to lead the House of Commons science and technology select committee, told the Financial Times that the US-based billionaire owner of X was ‘someone we’d like to invite’ as a witness. … Last month British officials complained they had faced resistance from X over calls to take down posts deemed a threat to national security during the worst riots in England for more than a decade. … MPs cannot force witnesses to turn up, but can deem them to be ‘in contempt’ of parliament if they snub a formal summons. The sanction is in practice only symbolic.” (09/09/24)

5) Israeli regime asks US congressional toadies to extort South African regime into dropping ICJ genocide case
Source: Axios
“Israel is lobbying members of Congress to press South Africa to drop its legal proceedings in the International Court of Justice (ICJ) over the war in Gaza, according to an Israeli foreign ministry cable obtained by Axios. South Africa has until Oct. 28 to give the top UN court its arguments for continuing the case against Israel over alleged violations of the Genocide Convention during the war in Gaza. Israeli officials say they want members of Congress to make clear to South Africa that there will be consequences for continuing to pursue the case. … Israeli diplomats were instructed to ask members of Congress to issue public statements condemning South Africa’s actions against Israel and threaten that it could lead to suspending U.S. trade relations with South Africa.” (09/09/24)

6) Big Lots sells business to Nexus Capital as it begins bankruptcy proceedings
Source: Reuters
“U.S. discount home goods retailer Big Lots said on Monday it has secured $707.5 million to support its operations and sell its business to private equity firm Nexus Capital, as it has initiated bankruptcy proceedings under Chapter 11. Big Lots listed its assets and liabilities in the range of $1 billion to $10 billion, according to a filing with bankruptcy court in Delaware, which showed creditors in the range of 5,001-10,000. Nexus will serve as a ‘stalking horse bidder’ in a court-supervised auction process, Big Lots said, adding that the deal will close in the fourth quarter of 2024 if Nexus is deemed the winning bidder. A stalking horse bid is used as a starting or minimally accepted offer that other interested bidders must surpass if they want to buy the asset or the company.” (09/09/24)

7) China: New space port damaged by Super Typhoon Yagi
Source: South China Morning Post [Hong Kong]
“Super Typhoon Yagi – the world’s second most powerful tropical cyclone this year – has damaged a newly built Chinese space port in the southern island province of Hainan. On Friday Yagi, which had winds of around 245km/h (152mph) near its centre, made landfall in Wenchang, a city that hosts several space facilities, including China’s first international commercial space launch centre, the Wenchang Aerospace Supercomputing Centre. … an article published on Sunday by Hainan International Commercial Aerospace Launch Co Ltd, which operates the site, said some doors and windows at the facility had been broken, while flooding in the main control room had seriously damaged computers and display screens.
However, the article said that the Long March 12 rocket at the site had not been damaged.” (09/09/24)

8) Germany: Regime announces temporary controls on all land borders
Source: Reuters
“Germany’s government announced temporary border controls at all of the country’s land borders on Monday in what it called an attempt to tackle irregular migration and protect the public from threats such as Islamist extremism. The controls will start on Sept. 16 and initially last for six months, the interior ministry said in a statement. ‘We are strengthening internal security and continuing our hard line against irregular migration,’ Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said. Germany has hardened its stance on migration in recent years, as the government scrambles to retake the initiative after support for the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) has surged over the issue. Recent deadly knife attacks in which the suspects were asylum seekers have stoked concerns over immigration. The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for a knife attack in the western city of Solingen that killed three people in August.” (09/09/24)

9) Family of US Activist Killed by IDF Sniper Pushes Biden to Order “Independent Investigation”
Source: Common Dreams
“The family of the U.S. citizen killed by Israeli forces in the illegally occupied West Bank last week issued a statement over the weekend demanding that the Biden administration order an ‘independent investigation’, arguing a probe by Israel’s military would not be enough to establish the facts and pursue justice. The statement from Aysenur Eygi’s family was posted to Instagram on Saturday by a friend of Eygi, a 26-year-old Turkish American citizen who was volunteering for the pro-Palestinian International Solidarity Movement in the West Bank. According to eyewitnesses, Israeli soldiers shot Eygi in the head during a protest against the expansion of unlawful Israeli settlements near the West Bank city of Nablus.” (09/09/24)

Source: CBS News
“A suspected drug cartel boss allegedly linked to the disappearance a decade ago of 43 college students was arrested in Mexico after being released from prison in 2019, authorities said Friday. Gildardo Lopez Astudillo, alias ‘El Gil,’ is an alleged leader of the Guerreros Unidos cartel, accused of being behind the disappearance and suspected murders of the students from Ayotzinapa teachers’ college in 2014. … Lopez Astudillo was released in 2019 — a move condemned by family members of the missing students — after a judge found the evidence against him was obtained illegally. His arrest comes as relatives are preparing demonstrations to mark the anniversary of the students’ disappearance.” (09/09/24)

Source: New York Post
“A California state senator forced a former staffer to do sexual favors for her while she was his boss as part of a ‘quid pro quo relationship’ that left him riddled with back and hip injuries, a new lawsuit alleges. Sen. Marie Alvarado-Gil’s former chief of staff, Chad Condit, slapped her with the lawsuit last week, alleging the lawmaker — a longtime Democrat who recently jumped ship to the Republican Party — pressured him into performing sex acts on her when they traveled for work, KCRA reported. The married aide claims he relented and performed the acts on his boss over the years as part of a ‘sex-based quid pro quo relationship’ in order to protect his job, according to the suit filed in Sacramento Superior Court.” (09/09/24)

12) US Treasury yields rise as investors gear up for inflation data after weak jobs report
Source: CNBC
“Treasury yields were higher Monday as investors look ahead to fresh inflation prints following a series of weaker-than-expected U.S. economic data releases. The yield on the 10-year Treasury was 4 basis points higher at 3.753%. The 2-year Treasury yield rose nearly 5 basis points to 3.698%. Yields and prices move in opposite directions. One basis point is equivalent to 0.01%. August’s consumer price index will be out Wednesday, followed by the producer price index on Thursday. Treasury yields tumbled across the first week of September trade as reports on nonfarm payrolls and private payrolls both missed forecast estimates, reviving concerns about the extent of the slowdown in the U.S. economy. The unemployment rate dipped as expected to 4.2%.” (09/09/24)

“A judge has agreed to move the trial of man charged in the stabbing deaths of four University of Idaho students to a different city. In an order dated Friday, Idaho Second District Judge John C. Judge said he was concerned about defendant Bryan Kohberger’s ability to receive a fair trial at the Latah County courthouse in Moscow, given extensive media coverage of the case as well as statements by public officials suggesting Kohberger’s guilt. He also noted that the courthouse isn’t big enough to accommodate the case and that the county sheriff’s office doesn’t have enough deputies to handle security. “A busy bridge in northern Vietnam collapsed after being hit by Super Typhoon Yagi, which has killed more than 60 people since making landfall on Saturday. Dashcam footage showed the moment the Phong Chau bridge in Phu Tho province gave way on Monday, plunging several vehicles into the water below. Searches were under way for 13 people. The storm has wreaked havoc across the north of the country, with flooding and landslides leaving millions of people without power over the weekend. Although it has now weakened into a tropical depression, authorities have warned Yagi will create more disruption as it moves westwards. More than 240 people have been injured by the typhoon, which brought winds of up to 203 km/h (126 mph) and is Asia’s most powerful storm so far this year.” (09/09/24)

15) MO: Judge orders psychological evaluation for homeowner who shot Ralph Yarl
Source: SFGate
“A judge has ordered a mental evaluation and delayed the trial of an 85-year-old white man who shot Ralph Yarl after the teenage [b]lack honor student came to his Kansas City, Missouri, home by mistake. Andrew Lester’s lawyer requested the evaluation last month, saying the retired aircraft mechanic’s health has deteriorated so much that he now lacks the capacity to understand the proceedings against him or to assist in his own defense. The prosecution didn’t object to the request. The trial of Lester had been scheduled to begin Oct. 7. Instead, there will be a hearing the following day. Lester has pleaded not guilty to charges of first-degree assault and armed criminal action in the April 13, 2023, shooting of Yarl, then 16. Yarl survived the shooting and graduated from high school in the spring. But his family said the shooting took a big emotional toll and has filed a lawsuit against Lester.” (09/09/24)

16) Biden regime to require mental health coverage “parity”
Source: Politico
“The Biden administration is finalizing a sweeping expansion of regulations that require insurers to cover mental health and addiction care on the same terms as other care. Administration officials said insurers have flouted a 2008 law requiring so-called mental health parity — and are expanding the rules, with potential fines for violators. However, the administration’s decision is expected to draw legal challenges from the industry. … The move is likely to impact millions of Americans and comes as the nation faces a worsening mental health crisis. Most people with substance use disorder and mental health conditions, for instance, don’t get treatment, according to many estimates. The new rules, some of which will go into effect next year, also give Vice President Kamala Harris a new administration measure to tout on the campaign trail, as expanding access to mental health care is broadly popular.” (09/09/24)

17) Report: Ozempic and other weight loss drugs linked to 162 US deaths
Source: New York Post
“Weight loss shots like Ozempic and Wegovy have been linked to 162 deaths in the United States over the past six years, according to the Daily Mail. These casualties are listed in the FDA’s FAERS (FDA Adverse Event Reporting System) database, which stores reports on adverse reactions, safety concerns and quality complaints about drugs after they are marketed. These reports can be submitted by medical staff, manufacturers and patients themselves. While none of the deaths have proven to be explicitly caused by semaglutide injections, reports indicate they were a factor in the fatalities. According to the report, instances of death where these drugs are mentioned have risen 40% over the past six months.” (09/09/24)

Source: US News & World Report
“The body of a senior Tanzanian opposition official abducted from a bus by armed men was found on the outskirts of commercial capital Dar es Salaam with signs he had been beaten and acid had been poured on his face, his party said. The killing of Ally Kibao, a member of the secretariat of the main opposition CHADEMA party, may taint the reformist image of President Samia Suluhu Hassan, who has tried to ease repression since succeeding John Magafuli who died in office three years ago. Kibao’s body was found on Saturday morning, a day after two armed men removed him from a bus travelling from Dar es Salaam to the north-eastern port city of Tanga, CHADEMA chairman Freeman Mbowe told journalists late on Sunday.” (09/09/24)

19) TN: Officers laid blame on Tyre Nichols, video shows fatal beatdown they largely omitted
Source: SFGate
“Tyre Nichols screamed for his mother while Memphis police beat him after a traffic stop on Jan. 7, 2023, about a block from where he lived with his parents. The 29-year-old died in a hospital three days later. In an analysis of what the officers claimed happened on that night, The Associated Press sifted through hundreds of pages of evidence and hours of video from the scene, including officer body cameras. The cameras showed a starkly different scene to that described by the officers. More than a year and a half after Nichols'[s] death, three former officers are facing a federal criminal trial over the deadly pummeling. That’s in addition to allegations that they offered essentially no help as he slumped on a patrol car and onto the pavement, and claims that they lied or left out critical information to protect themselves from repercussions.” (09/09/24)

21) The Murder of Aysenur Eygi
Source: Eunomia
by Daniel Larison
“An Israeli soldier fatally shot an American citizen and peace activist, Aysenur Eygi, in the head on Friday while she was participating in a peaceful protest against an illegal Israeli settlement in the West Bank. … Like the murder of American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh by an Israeli sniper in May 2022, this is a clear case of a member of the Israeli military gunning down an unarmed American citizen. The IDF’s account of this killing — that their soldiers were responding to a rock-throwing ‘instigator’ — is no more credible than the story that they spun two years ago when one of their men shot a journalist in the head. There must be a credible independent investigation into Aysenur Eygi’s murder, and the shooter must be made to answer for the crime.” (09/09/24)

In 2023, the IRS assessed 18,599,109 penalties on individuals who allegedly underpaid or failed to pay federal income taxes. How did the IRS miss Hunter Biden for so long? In 2021, the Biden administration sought to compel banks to report to the IRS any bank account with more than $600 in transactions per year. But the feds effectively disregarded multimillion dollar windfalls pouring into Hunter’s offers from around the globe Hunter is a tax dodger straight out of IRS Central Casting.” (09/09/24)

Source: The Atlantic
by David Deming
“Economists generally agree that competition is good, and that markets with only a few dominant players are inefficient. We may need to take a hard look in the mirror. According to a new working paper, the recipients of major economics prizes, including the Nobel, have collectively spent half their career at just eight universities: Harvard (where I teach), Yale, Princeton, Stanford, MIT, the University of Chicago, Columbia, and Berkeley. … By applying a metric commonly used in antitrust cases, the authors — the economists Richard B. Freeman, Danxia Xie, Hanzhe Zhang, and Hanzhang Zhou — showed that Nobel Prizes in economics are nearly five times more concentrated than in chemistry, physics, and medicine. Even more alarming, economics is the only one of the 18 fields studied in which concentration is increasing.” (09/09/24)

25) Is This the Real Reason Trump Promises to Pardon January 6th Convicts?
Source: The Bulwark
by Dennis Aftergut
“There’s a promise Donald Trump keeps making on the campaign trail that every reporter who interviews him — and the moderators of Tuesday night’s debate, David Muir and Linsey Davis of ABC News — should question him about: that he will pardon convicted January 6th criminals. … To a former prosecutor, Trump looks to be doing something even worse than reinforcing the backward-looking narrative that the January 6th Capitol invaders were patriots. By dangling in this way the prospect of a pardon, he appears to be looking to a future where he may well want these loyalists back on the street and acting on his behalf again — organized paramilitary groups performing sanctioned acts of violence. If past is prologue and Trump loses the election, is there any reason to think he won’t enlist violent right-wingers to challenge the outcome during the weeks between Election Day and January 6, 2025?” (09/09/24)

“After the school shooting in Winder, Georgia, on Wednesday, much of the attention has been on what failed. Most of all, federal and local officials acknowledge they knew about the troubled teen, who killed four people, and had questioned him a year earlier. At the time, they said, they could not definitively connect him to threats posted online. Yet this focus on how to better predict violence may mask a simpler approach to preventing it. A growing body of evidence shows that teaching empathy toward people who are troubled is more effective in curbing gun violence than trying to profile would-be assailants. And it taps into resources already at hand – neighbors, community leaders, and students.” (09/09/24)

There is a kind of symmetry at work: Like the dying rural areas that are now its stronghold, the Republican Party has seen the educated and affluent suburban professionals that once filled its ranks decamp to the party of the cities and inner suburbs. When the city of Aberdeen ordered the homeless encampment cleared out, some of those unhoused residents took the city to court, because they had nowhere else to go. … a U.S. court of appeals had ruled in the case of Martin v. Policies aimed to strengthen empire — and that once did — now undermine it.” (09/09/24)

30) Wisdom From the Great Vince Lombardi
Source: Town Hall
by Mark Lewis
“Vince Lombardi has rightly gone down as one of the greatest head coaches in history. He led the Green Bay Packers to three straight championships in the 1960s, five in seven years, and won the first two Super Bowls after the 1966 and 1967 seasons. I was a Dallas Cowboys fan, so I didn’t especially like the Packers (hated them, actually), but I do remember, even as a youth, having great respect for Vince Lombardi. … Lombardi deserves to be remembered (and is, by many) but he’ll never attain the fame of a George Washington, Napoleon Bonaparte, or Adolf Hitler. We recall the good and the evil, and that isn’t altogether bad, but we forget some we shouldn’t.” (09/09/24)

31) The World That September 11 Made
Source: The New Republic
by Ed Burmilia
“In the recent bestseller When the Clock Broke, John Ganz argues that the seeds of the rampant insanity at the heart of American politics today were planted in the 1990s. … I couldn’t shake the subjective feeling that if forced to choose one point in political time that we are condemned to relive forever, like Bill Murray in Groundhog Day, it is the period between the 9/11 attacks and the invasion of Iraq. Going on vibes alone, it feels even more like the clock broke in 2002. Richard Beck’s Homeland: The War on Terror in American Life is, at its core, this argument. He persuasively makes the case that we have lived for 23 years in the shadow of the burning Twin Towers and that almost no aspect of American life — economic, social, political, cultural — remains untouched by the collective trauma of 9/11 and our responses to it.” (09/09/24)

33) Rainbow Flag Genocide Vs MAGA Hat Genocide
Source: Caitlin Johnstone, Rogue Journalist
by Caitlin Johnstone
“Kamala Harris has enthusiastically accepted the endorsement of Dick Cheney. The degree of comfort US liberals have with men like Cheney is more evidence that they don’t view people in the global south as fully human. If they did, his endorsement would be rejected with the same revulsion they’d show endorsements from NAMBLA or neo-Nazis. … Any political worldview that’s worth a damn necessarily includes a deep and visceral hatred of Dick Cheney, and an abhorrence toward any ideology which sympathizes with him. … Mark my words: the same people telling you Harris is the better vote to save Gaza will make all kinds of excuses for her when she becomes president and you point out that she isn’t saving Gaza. Happened with Trump, happened with Obama. Same schtick over and over again.” (09/09/24)

34) Tampa Trial on Free Speech Exposes US Hypocrisy
Source: Future of Freedom Foundation
by Jacob G Hornberger
“As I have written in my last two blog posts … the U.S. government is prosecuting members of a small political group named the African People’s Socialist Party and its related ‘Uhuru’ movement. The trial is taking place in U.S. District Court in Tampa. … the defendants are being prosecuted for failing to register themselves as agents of the Russian government and ‘sowing discord and conflict’ within American voters, especially by opposing the U.S. government’s foreign policy of interventionism, including in Ukraine. On Day 3 of the trial last week, the feds presented an ‘expert witness’ to establish Russia’s history of disinformation. That’s rich, given that the U.S. government has long been one of the leaders of disinformation.” (09/09/24)

35) Harris’s “Joy” Would Cost US Dearly
Source: American Institute for Economic Research
by Alexander William Salter
“American progressives are out of ideas. Instead of a bold economic agenda, all they have to offer is reruns of policy failures. Vice President Kamala Harris’s recent proposals are notable examples. Behind the facade of joy hides an alarming indifference to the immense costs her schemes would create if she wins the presidency. Economists have a duty to point out just how destructive these proposals are. Exhibit A is her call for price controls on groceries. Ignore the rhetorical sleight-of-hand from the campaign and its defenders, who insist they only want to clamp down on ‘price gouging.’ This is clearly a call for the government to crack down on retailers who are selling food at any price Harris and other progressive elites deem excessive.” (09/09/24)

36) The Return of the Common Law?
Source: Law & Liberty
by Steven Hayward
“The consensus among legal scholars and media observers is that we have at last arrived at the triumph of ‘originalism’ in our jurisprudence, the culmination of a legal counter-revolution decades in the making. But there seem to be as many versions or shadings of originalism as there are flavors at Baskin-Robbins. Even when the conservative originalist justices of the Supreme Court agree on a holding and doctrine, the jural anchors and lines of reasoning often differ considerably. Regardless of the lack of a clear center point, the triumph of originalism represents the end of the free-wheeling, result-driven ‘due process’ jurisprudence of the Warren Court, arguably rolling back the judicial odometer to before the ‘legal realism’ of the early twentieth century sanctified the progressive drive for judicial modification of the law to meet ‘the felt needs’ of the time.” ()9/09/24)

“Somehow the United States ended up this summer with no engaged president and an absent vice president who avoids the missing president and is frantically repudiating everything she co-owned the last three years. The world was already confused over how President Joe Biden was apparently declared by unnamed Democratic insiders and donors unfit and unable to continue as their presidential candidate — as if he were a dethroned Third-World usurper. … Vice President Kamala Harris, until Biden’s forced abdication, was judged by these same backroom fixers as too incompetent to ever be commander-in-chief and thus for three years a good reason why Biden apparently was not forced out earlier.” (09/09/24)

38) Kill the Stock Market!
Source: Common Sense
by Paul Jacob
“Taxing capital gains is a form of income taxation that Democrats love. And it’s not just a matter of increasing revenue. Remember that President Obama thought that increasing the capital gains rate was a good idea even if it decreased government revenue. Democrats are playing to a soak-the-rich sentiment among their base, even when the most important supporters are billionaires. Take Mark Cuban. He’s a billionaire. And he supports Kamala Harris for president. Weeks ago, the Democrat standard-bearer came out with a wild proposal to tax unrealized capital gains. And Cuban, for all his faults, is not an idiot; he knows just how incredibly corrosive that tax on capital would be. ‘It would kill the stock market,’ he points out.” (09/09/24)

“The term ‘Orwellian’ is rapidly losing its gravitas with how often we make recourse to it in trying to explain global society’s piecemeal tumble into neofascism (same as the old fascism), but a recent batch of policy changes at the University of California, Los Angeles, rolling out this fall in retaliation for students and faculty’s pro-Palestine, anti-genocide protests last spring, truly deserves the epithet. … UCLA administration is scrambling to enact new campus-wide policies aimed at preventing student movements, activism, protests, and other forms of free expression and free association from taking place on campus, which is public land owned by the State of California.” (09/09/24)

40) How to lift people out of poverty without just giving them cash
Source: Washington Post
by Megan McArdle
“The government struggles with a lot — but one thing it excels at is writing checks. There’s a reason Social Security is one of the U.S. government’s most popular programs: Fraud is minimal. There’s very little hassle with government bureaucrats, and since the program took effect, the elderly poverty rate has fallen from almost 80 percent to 10.9 percent. Check-writing is simple to administer and efficient at meeting its goals: If you give someone money, they will definitely have money. … Unfortunately, as I noted in my last column, checks are of limited avail against hard problems. Three studies showed that even substantial transfers did little to help low-income people. Understandably, some readers found this disappointing and infuriating. ‘What’s your solution, then?’ they demanded. One answer is that there might not be a solution to every problem.” (09/09/24)

41) On Taxes, a Sharp Campaign Contrast Between Harris and Trump
Source: Common Dreams
by Amy Hanauer
“As U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump get ready to debate for the first time this week, what can we expect from their campaigns in terms of taxes? Harris endorses multiple proposals to generate revenue from the richest people and the biggest corporations and deliver a middle-class tax cut—with the former paying for the latter. Trump would cut some middle-class taxes but promotes a new tariff tax on imports that would hike the price of nearly everything Americans purchase and, doubling down on past practice, he’d slash taxes for millionaires and corporations. He hasn’t identified a single business or billionaire that should pay more. When Trump and congressional Republicans passed the 2017 tax law, they made massive tax cuts for corporations permanent but set the individual cuts, which were heavily skewed to the extremely wealthy, to expire at the end of 2025.” (09/09/24)

Years-long negotiations over the compacts of free association that Washington maintains with Palau, the Marshall Islands, and the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) concluded quietly earlier this year without any challenges to the permanence of U.S. military controls. “In 2019, Vice President Kamala Harris told CNN’s Jake Tapper that social media companies ‘are directly speaking to millions and millions of people without any level of oversight or regulation and it has to stop.’ Does it? Every two-bit authoritarian in history has justified censoring citizens as a way of protecting them from the menace of disinformation. But social media sites, contra the reliably illiberal Harris, aren’t ‘directly speaking’ to anyone. Millions of individuals are interacting and speaking to millions of other individuals. by Chris Matthew Sciabarra
“In the furtherance of my dialectical libertarian framework, I have drawn from many different thinkers and traditions. I have sometimes been asked if my approach was a form of eclecticism. To be an eclectic is often looked down upon because it suggests that a person has derived their viewpoint from a diverse array of incompatible sources. In two recent essays, the independent left-wing writer Alex Strekal raises legitimate questions about the dangers of both eclecticism and dogmatism in social theory. Since my work is mentioned critically in one of those essays, I thought I’d use this opportunity to summarize Strekal’s points and to discuss the nature of my approach.” (09/08/24)

The closest thing the poll has to any variation on ‘too much money chasing too few goods’ is ‘The Policies of President Joe Biden,’ which could mean just about anything President Biden has done. The Federal Reserve is conspicuously absent from the list of potential suspects. … Which is easier to do: believe that sinister forces are at work or explain all the terms in the equation M*V = P*Y, total spending — the money supply times the velocity of money, which is the frequency with which each dollar is used — is equal to the product of the price level and the amount of real output[?]” (09/08/24)

“[W]hen looking for a new electoral home after the takeover of the LP, I wanted one that could act as a good soapbox with a great reach and one that had a chance in local elections. That’s when I realized that many left-leaning Libertarians had hopped ship to revitalize the Democratic Freedom Caucus (DFC) of the Democratic Party. The DFC is a largely geolibertarian caucus of the Democratic Party and one that I had some familiarity with but had been mostly dead aside from a website and some social media presence. … But obviously at the end of the day, I remain an anarchist and prefer direct action, mutual aid, and agorism over participation in electoral politics.” (09/08/24)

“Hey, remember Congress? A bicameral representative body elected throughout the country that meets in a neoclassical domed building in Washington? Down the street from the White House? Apparently that wasn’t just a fad from the ’90s and they still meet every now and again. In fact, they are back in session this very week. Who knew? I wouldn’t get your hopes up that they’ll do much of anything. In fact, September is a ‘you had one job’ session: Congress needs only to pass funding by the end of the month to keep the government in operation. Everything else, save for some messaging votes, will probably wait until after the election. Stop me if you’ve heard this before, but Congress is having a tough time figuring out how to accomplish this basic task of keeping the lights on.” (09/09/24)

50) Amendment 3: Will Legal Weed Light Up Florida’s Future?
Source: Palm Beach Examiner
by Karl Dickey
“Legalization of recreational marijuana would lead to economic growth in Florida, which would increase tax revenues for the State of Florida, which, under the Amendment, would go to education, infrastructure, and other public services. It would also increase jobs as the industry expands. More important than generating revenue for the State is that it would, by definition, reduce crime by legalizing cannabis use, and law enforcement can stop wasting resources arresting those using and in possession of the plant, enabling them to focus on actual crimes with actual victims. … But it is not all a bed of roses; the devil is in the details. In my view, it doesn’t go far enough. We should be able to grow the plant in our homes and backyards without threat of arrest. The measure is protectionist by only allowing certain vendors to produce and sell cannabis.” (09/08/24)
