0) Publisher’s Note: Weekend Special Edition!
Hey, everyone …
This end of week news/commentary/podcast cycle has been busier than usual, at least in part due to the September 10 murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Instead of either leaving out a lot of important stuff, or running a “hybrid” edition with extra content on Monday (which just might happen anyway!), we’re hitting you with an extra, short “weekend special edition” — five news stories, ten opinion pieces, five audio/video links. Enjoy!
Naturally, I’ll also remind you that we’re a reader-supported publication:
https://news.rationalreview.com/support-rrndHope you’re enjoying a happy, healthy, and prosperous weekend, and we’ll be back with an AT LEAST regular-size edition on Monday.
Yours in liberty,
Tom Knapp

1) Suspect arrested in Charlie Kirk assassination
Source: ABC News
“Tyler Robinson, the man suspected of killing conservative activist Charlie Kirk during a campus event at a Utah university, had eluded authorities for more than a day. However, after his father recognized him from photographs distributed by authorities, a series of events ultimately led to the 22-year-old Robinson being taken into custody.” (09/12/25)

2) Bitcoin Hash Rate Hits Record as Network Difficulty Surges
Source: Yahoo! Finance
“Bitcoin’s hash rate, the network’s aggregate computational power, reached a milestone of 1.12 billion TH/s on September 12, according to Bitinfocharts data. The network difficulty, which measures the computational complexity required for miners to discover new blocks on the blockchain, is on track to reach a record peak of 136.04T. … An increasing hash rate shows increased computational resources being allocated to Bitcoin mining. This typically reflects increased miner confidence, as they essentially bet that Bitcoin’s future valuation will warrant their hardware and energy costs …” (09/12/25)

3) Nepal: Former chief justice sworn in as interim prime minister following deadly protests
Source: CNN
“Nepal’s first female prime minister was sworn in Friday as interim leader, capping a tumultuous week that saw massive and deadly youth-led protests against corruption and nepotism topple the country’s leader and plunge the nation into political turmoil. Former chief justice Sushila Karki, 73, was the unlikely choice of the ‘Gen Z’ protesters behind the movement that started out as a social media demonstration against the lavish lifestyles of ‘Nepo Kids’ but spilled out onto the streets and into the deadliest social unrest Nepal has seen in years. Protesters signaled their support for Karki through an informal vote on the messaging app Discord.” (09/12/25)

4) Memphis next US city to see military occupation, Trump says
Source: BBC News [UK state media]
“Memphis, Tennessee, is the next US city where President Donald Trump is sending National Guard troops as part of his ongoing crackdown on crime in Democrat-led cities. Trump made the announcement during a wide-ranging interview on Fox News Channel’s Fox and Friends on Friday, and said the city’s mayor, a Democrat, is ‘happy’ about the decision, as is the state’s governor, a Republican. The deployment to Memphis would mark an escalation in the president’s use of troops and comes roughly a month after he sent the National Guard to the streets of Washington DC.” (09/12/25)

5) SC: Homeowner holds intruder at gunpoint until cops arrive
Source: WMBF News
“Homeowner Casey Eagle said 51-year-old Erik Mooney knocked on his door early Sunday morning, saying someone was trying to kill him. So, Eagle told Mooney to stay on the porch, and he would call the cops for him. ‘He asked me to come inside; I told him no,’ Eagle said. ‘But not knowing whether it was true or not, of course I’m not going to turn somebody away if they are in need.’ Eagle said Mooney kept jiggling the door handle, so he grabbed his gun and sat on the couch while waiting for police. Eagle said ten minutes later Mooney came crashing through his door holding a broomstick. ‘I wasn’t expecting it,’ Eagle said. ‘Especially because the police were on the way. He knew this. I knew this.’ Eagle said Mooney immediately hit the ground, so he pointed the gun at him and told him to lie on his stomach with his hands out.” (09/12/25)

6) Despite the fantasy, Donald Trump is no peace president
Source: Orange County Register
by Steven Greenhut
“The two Trump administrations have launched as many airstrikes at overseas targets as any other administration. Although childish and superficial, his renaming the Department of Defense as the Department of War doesn’t telegraph a love of peace. Nor does his authorized strikeon a Venezuelan boat in the Caribbean. His policies in the Middle East have amounted to little more than giving Israel the greenlight to do as it pleases. Then there were his attacks on nuclear sites in Iran and his constant threats to send troops to root out cartels in Mexico. Whether or not you agree with these policies, they don’t adhere to any principled non-interventionist philosophy.” (09/12/25)

8) From Draining the Swamp to Owning Intel: How the Right Became What It Feared
Source: The Daily Economy
by Stefan Bartl
“America has always prided itself on not being a socialist nation. But President Donald Trump now hails a new ‘golden age’ — sold with the optimism of Ronald Reagan’s ‘Morning in America’ but built on Washington’s intrusion into corporate ownership. The federal government already imposes one of the world’s most progressive tax systems, runs health care, subsidizes education, guarantees pensions, and now wields voting powers in corporate boardrooms. When bureaucrats become shareholders, it is not a sign of national strength, but of institutional failure.” (09/12/25)

9) Debating Charlie Kirk’s legacy
Source: Semafor
by David Weigel
“After Charlie Kirk was killed, as his friends mourned a loving husband and adoring father, the argument over his legacy began. Liberals — and some conservatives — remembered a debater who believed in reason, persuasion, and electoral politics. ‘Kirk was practicing politics in exactly the right way,’ wrote Ezra Klein. ‘He was showing up to campuses and talking with anyone who would talk to him.’ That column angered leftists, but it wasn’t for them. It was for liberals, who decried what campus political debate had become; the ‘safe spaces,’ the language tangled by critical theory, the protesters who made right-wing politicians look good.” (09/12/25)

10) Who’s Behind the Epstein Cover-Up?
Source: The American Conservative
by George G O’Neill Jr.
“President Donald Trump for decades has weathered scandal after scandal: bankruptcies, public divorces, and lawsuits which threaten financial or political ruin with the possibility of imprisonment. In spite of all this, he was able to persevere and vanquish or at least neutralize his opponents and twice win the presidency. It was an amazing test of personal fortitude and focus. Even his detractors were impressed. Yet after successfully navigating all these daunting travails, Trump appears to be spooked by calls from his own base to release the Epstein files. His bizarre and extraordinary response to the recent publication of a birthday card given to Epstein and bearing Trump’s signature only intensifies the serious concerns of the American public.” (09/12/25)

11) The CDC Needed a Thorough Housecleaning
Source: Brownstone Institute
by Joseph Varon
“For 715 consecutive days — every single day — I put on full protective gear in the ICU at Houston’s United Memorial Medical Center, fighting Covid-19 on the frontlines. I never took a day off, because when lives hang in the balance, doctors don’t get the luxury of excuses. We act. We fight. We serve. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was created to serve with that same urgency — to protect Americans from infectious disease through science, transparency, and rapid response. But what the public got instead during the pandemic was an agency more obsessed with narratives and control than with saving lives.” (09/12/25)

12) Trump’s World Liberty Financial — A Crypto Currency Revolution or Just a Bigger Trump University?
Source: Racket News
by Eric Salzman
“President Trump and the Trump family businesses have been making big waves in the cryptocurrency world since Trump took office this year. He signed the Genius Act, which provides clearer regulation of stablecoins as well as establishing a working group to, as the White House put it, usher in ‘The Golden Age of Crypto.’ The problem is it’s in the interest of the Trump family’s burgeoning crypto business, World Liberty Financial (WLF), to do so. Led at least nominally by Don Jr and Eric Trump, WLF has been making huge deals. Two questions come to mind: * Is Trump using the presidency for personal profit? * Will investors get screwed, like the investors in Trump-branded gimmicks such as Trump University?” (09/12/25)

14) Incentives Matter, Math History Edition
Source: EconLog
by Kevin Corcoran
“Economists are fond of talking about how people respond to incentives — and stress how social arrangements can produce suboptimal results when they give people counterproductive incentives. I recently saw a fun video on the history of how mathematicians developed the imaginary number system (hey, I think it’s fun anyway!) that shows an example of this in action.” (09/12/25)
