1)  Colombia: Former guerrilla Petro wins election to become first leftist [sic] president
Source: The Guardian [UK]

“Colombia has elected a former guerrilla fighter Gustavo Petro as president, making him the South American country’s first leftist [sic] head of state. Petro beat Rodolfo Hernandez, a gaff-prone former mayor of Bucaramanga and business mogul, with 50.47% of the vote in a runoff election on Sunday and will take office in July amid a host of challenges, not least of which is the deepening discontent over inequality and rising costs of living. Hernandez had 47.27%, with almost all ballots counted, according to results released by election authorities. Petro’s election marks a tidal shift for Colombia, a country that has never before had a leftist [sic] president, and follows similar victories for the left [sic] in Peru, Chile and Honduras.” (06/20/22)

2)  Disgraced former US president panics, lashes out as hope of escaping consequences for his actions fades
Source: Yahoo! News

“Donald Trump took to Truth Social again on Sunday morning posting a furious rant about the House investigation into the events of 6 January 2021, turning his attention to the next hearing, set to feature Georgia election officials he asked to ‘find’ him votes. … ‘The highly partisan Unselects are trying to create a FAKE narrative, for whatever reason but only with evil intention, that ‘He (me) knew he lost the Election.’ This is completely false. I felt the Election was RIGGED & STOLLEN, have from the very beginning, & have only gotten stronger in that belief with time & large amounts of additional evidence and proof.’ He continued: ‘In my mind I have, & HAVE HAD, NO QUESTION, and MANY people would be willing to so attest, but the Unselects don’t want to hear them……’ The former president then returned to one of his favourite phrases, posting simply: ‘WITCH HUNT!'” (06/19/22)

3)  France: Macron alliance projected to lose parliamentary majority
Source: SFGate

“French President Emmanuel Macron’s alliance got the most seats in the final round of the parliamentary election on Sunday, but it lost its parliamentary majority, projections show. The projections, which are based on partial results, show that Macron’s candidates would win between 200 and 250 seats — much less than the 289 required to have a straight majority at the National Assembly, France’s most powerful house of parliament. The situation, which is unusual in France, is expected to make Macron’s political maneuvering difficult if the projections are borne out. A new coalition (made up of the hard left, the Socialists and the Greens) is projected to become the main opposition force with about 150 to 200 seats. The far-right National Rally is projected to register a huge surge with potentially more than 80 seats, up from eight before.” (06/19/22)

4)  Poll: Number of Americans who believe in God drops to historic low
Source: Fox News

“The percentage of Americans who say they believe in God has dipped to the lowest number in the past nearly 80 years, according to a new Gallup poll published Friday. The Values and Belief poll, conducted from May 2 to 22, showed 81% of people answered that they believe in God. That is down six percentage points from the 87% of respondents who said they believed in God in the 2017 poll. This year is the lowest percentage in Gallup’s trend since the public opinion polling company first asked the question in 1944. This year’s poll found 17% of Americans said they do not believe in God. When asking the question first in 1944, again in 1947, and twice each in the 1950s and 1960s, a consistent 98% of respondents said they believed in God. When Gallup asked the question nearly five decades later, in 2011, 92% of Americans said they believed in God.” (06/19/22)

5)  Ukraine war: Russians advance in battle for Donbas
Source: Reuters

“Russia said on Sunday it seized a village near [the Luhansk People’s Republic’s] industrial city of Sievierodonetsk, a prime target in Moscow’s campaign to control [seceded republics formerly part of Ukraine’s] east, as the head of NATO predicted the war could last for years. Russia’s defence ministry said it had won Metyolkine, a settlement of fewer than 800 people before the war began. Russian state news agency TASS reported that many Ukrainian fighters had surrendered there.” (06/19/22)

6)  Ethiopia: More than 200 killed in alleged ethnic attack, witnesses say
Source: CBS News

“Witnesses in Ethiopia said Sunday that more than 200 ethnic Amhara have been killed in an attack in the country’s Oromia region and are blaming a rebel group, which denies it. It is one of the deadliest such attacks in recent memory as ethnic tensions continue in Africa’s second most populous country. … witnesses blamed the Oromo Liberation Army for the attacks. In a statement, the Oromia regional government also blamed the OLA, saying the rebels attacked ‘after being unable to resist the operations launched by (federal) security forces.’ An OLA spokesman, Odaa Tarbii, denied the allegations. ‘The attack you are referring to was committed by the regime’s military and local militia as they retreated from their camp in Gimbi following our recent offensive,’ he said in a message to the AP.” (06/19/22)

7)  SpaceX performs three launches within two days
Source: Space News

“SpaceX completed a surge of three successful launches in a little more than 36 hours early June 19 …. The stretch of launches started June 17 with a Falcon 9 launch from Kennedy Space Center’s Launch Complex 39A. The rocket, lifting off at 12:09 p.m. Eastern, placed 53 Starlink satellites into orbit. … The second launch took place at 10:19 a.m. Eastern June 18 from Space Launch Complex 4E at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. The Falcon 9 placed into orbit the SARah-1 radar imaging satellite …. The final, and perhaps most mysterious, launch took place at 12:27 a.m. Eastern June 19 from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. The only identified payload on the launch was Globalstar FM15, a spare satellite for low Earth orbit satellite operator Globalstar. … Several aspects of the mission suggested to observers that Globalstar FM15 was not the only payload on the launch.” (06/19/22)

Source: South China Morning Post [Hong Kong]

“Sara Duterte-Carpio, daughter of outgoing Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, was sworn in as the country’s 15th vice-president on Sunday, calling for national unity following a divisive election campaign. … ‘The days ahead may be full of challenges that call for us to be more united as a nation,’ she said in an inauguration address attended by thousands in her hometown of Davao, on the southern island of Mindanao. She took the oath of office with her parents standing next to her, breaking with tradition where the two top leaders hold their inaugurations on the day they assume office. … The vice president-elect has said she opted to be sworn in early so that her city can witness the ceremony.” (06/19/22)

9)  VA: Pro-choice protesters descend on Coney Barrett’s home with blood and doll props
Source: Fox News

“Pro-choice protesters congregated outside Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett’s Virginia home on Saturday, dressed in clothing appearing to be soaked with blood and holding baby doll toys. ‘Abortion on demand and without apology’, signs held by members of the group Rise Up 4 Abortion Rights read on Saturday as they stood outside Barrett’s home in Falls Church. The protesters were armed with baby doll props and were wearing pants appearing to be soaked in blood to show a future of forced births if the Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade. Protests erupted outside of conservative Supreme Court justices’ homes in recent weeks, following the leaked Supreme Court draft opinion signaling the nation’s highest court might overturn Roe v. 10) Palestine: Israeli forces murder man near apartheid “separation wall”
Source: Al Jazeera [Qatar]

“Israeli forces have killed a 53-year-old Palestinian man near the separation barrier in Qalqilya city in the north of the occupied West Bank, according to Palestinian news agency Wafa. The victim, identified as Nabil Ahmed Ghanem by the Palestinian health ministry, was shot dead on Sunday near the village of Jaljulia. He was a resident of the northern West Bank city of Nablus. The Palestinian Foreign Ministry said Sunday’s shooting was a ‘field execution.’ Wafa reported that Ghanem has been shot at while trying to cross the separation barrier. He was among the tens of thousands of West Bank Palestinians who regularly seek work in Israel. An Israeli army spokesperson said forces had shot at ‘a suspect who vandalised the security fence,’ which the Palestinians and many rights organisations have [noticed is] an ‘apartheid wall.'” (06/19/22)

11) Bayer wins fourth Roundup weedkiller case in US
Source: Reuters

“A U.S. jury found Bayer’s Roundup weedkiller did not cause an Oregon man’s cancer, the German agriculture and pharmaceuticals company said on Saturday, handing the firm its fourth consecutive trial victory over such claims. The verdict, reached on Friday by the Circuit Court of Jackson County, Oregon, is ‘consistent with the assessments of expert regulators worldwide as well as the overwhelming evidence from four decades of scientific studies concluding that Roundup can be used safely and is not carcinogenic,’ Bayer said. … Glyphosate is the active ingredient in Bayer brands such as Roundup and RangerPro. It has been at the centre of mass litigation in the United States brought mostly by residential gardeners claiming the weedkiller caused their cancer.” (06/18/22)

12) Irish PM: Brexit plans to ditch parts of occupied Ireland Protocol “economic vandalism”
Source: BBC News [UK state media]

“Plans by the UK government to scrap parts of the post-Brexit trade deal it agreed with the EU would be ‘economic vandalism’ on [the six UK-occupied counties of] Ireland, the taoiseach (Irish PM) has said. The government wants to change the Northern Ireland Protocol to make it easier for some goods to flow from Great Britain to Northern Ireland. Micheal Martin said they would damage Northern Ireland’s economy. But DUP MP Sammy Wilson said Mr Martin was ‘focused on Dublin’s interests.’ Speaking on the BBC’s Sunday Morning programme, the taoiseach said that the legislation was unacceptable and represented ‘unilateralism of the worst kind.'” (06/19/22)

13) Afghanistan: Two killed in Sikh temple attack
Source: CNN

“Gunmen launched an attack on a Sikh Gurdwara in Afghanistan’s capital Kabul on Saturday, killing at least two people, Kabul police chief spokesman Khalid Zadran said. Seven attackers tried to storm the temple in the early hours of Saturday morning, throwing grenades at security guards who were standing at the entrance. The attackers also detonated a car bomb in the area but no casualties were reported from the explosion. All seven gunmen were killed after a standoff that lasted several hours inside the temple’s compound, Zadran said. There was no immediate claim of responsibility.” (06/18/22)

14) “Other States Will Soon Follow”: Iowa Supreme Court Deals Blow to Abortion Rights
Source: Common Dreams

“The GOP-packed Iowa Supreme Court on Friday dealt a serious blow to abortion rights in the state amid heightened fears about the future of reproductive freedom nationwide. In a case challenging medically unnecessary restrictions, Iowa’s high court determined that there is no fundamental right to abortion protected by the state constitution (which clears the way for state lawmakers to pass even stricter measures. The move reverses the state court’s own 2018 decision) which preceded Iowa Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds appointing four of the seven current justices — and comes as the nation awaits a U.S. Supreme Court ruling expected to overturn Roe v. Wade. Demands for the Biden administration and Democrats in Congress to protect and expand reproductive rights have grown since a draft opinion on Roe leaked last month. Despite that pressure, U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) recently joined with Republicans to block the Women’s Health Protection Act.” (06/18/22)

15) Federal judge will draw new Louisiana congressional map after Legislature fails to act
Source: Lafayette Daily Advertiser

“A federal judge will draw a new Louisiana congressional map with a second [b]lack district after the Legislature failed to draw new boundaries of its own in a Special Session that ended Saturday without the passage of any bill. Louisiana Middle District U.S. Judge Shelly Dick will now draw her own map for the state from the bench. Dick, who ruled June 6 that the congressional map passed by lawmakers in February violated the Voting Rights Act because it kept just one majority [b]lack district, had given the Legislature a deadline of June 20 to pass new boundaries or she would take over. Republican House Speaker Clay Schexnayder of Gonzales and Republican Senate President Page Cortez had unsuccessfully argued the Legislature needed more time to create a new map, a motion Dick denied in court Thursday.” (06/18/22)

16) Senegal: Opposition leader gives “ultimatum” to president after deadly clashes
Source: France 24 [French state media]

“Senegal’s main opposition leader has issued what he called an ‘ultimatum’ to President Macky Sall, urging him to release those arrested during a day of clashes that reportedly left three people dead. Violence broke out between youths and police in the capital Dakar on Friday, as officers blocked off access to the home of opposition leader Ousmane Sonko. Three opposition figures were also arrested and the city’s mayor was prevented from leaving his home, Sonko’s PASTEF party spokesman said. Media and the opposition have now reported a third, collateral death from the clashes — a taxi driver shot in Ziguinchor, Casamance. … Sonko had called for protests against a decision to bar a list of candidates for Senegal’s legislative elections on July 31. The move also bans him and other opposition figures from contesting the ballot.” (06/18/22)

17) World swimming bans women from women’s events
Source: SFGate

“World swimming’s governing body has effectively banned transgender women from competing in women’s events, starting Monday. FINA members widely adopted a new ‘gender inclusion policy’ on Sunday that only permits swimmers who transitioned before age 12 to compete in women’s events. The organization also proposed an ‘open competition category.’ ‘This is not saying that people are encouraged to transition by the age of 12. It’s what the scientists are saying, that if you transition after the start of puberty, you have an advantage, which is unfair,’ James Pearce, who is the spokesperson for FINA president Husain Al-Musallam, told The Associated Press. … ‘Basically, what they’re saying is that it is not feasible for people who have transitioned to compete without having an advantage.'” [odd factoid: Back in the late 1970s, I had the pleasure of interviewing Dr. Renee Richards (nee Richard Raskind), where we discussed a lot of these issues – SAT] (06/19/22)

Advisers to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommended the vaccines for children as young as six months old, and the final signoff came hours later from Dr. Rochelle Walensky, the agency’s director. … The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Friday authorized Moderna’s shot for children aged six months to five years, and Pfizer-BioNTech’s vaccine for children aged six months to four years.” (06/18/22)

19) Moroccans accuse French tycoon Jacques Bouthier of sexual harassment
Source: BBC News [UK state media]

“Four women in Morocco have filed complaints of sexual harassment against French insurance tycoon Jacques Bouthier. Now aged between 26 and 28, they had been employed by his firm in Tangier. The women said they had been sacked after refusing to give in to harassment and intimidation. The 75-year-old is under formal investigation in France for raping a minor and trafficking. He reportedly says he is the victim of blackmail. Considered to be one of France’s richest men, Mr Bouthier resigned as CEO of insurance brokers Vilavi, formerly known as Assu 2000, last month. On Friday, the Moroccan Association for the Rights of Victims held a news conference about the allegations alleged to have occurred in Tangier between 2018 until April 2022. Some of Mr Bouthier’s alleged victims appeared, wearing face masks and dark glasses to hide their identities, to tell journalists about their experiences.” (06/19/22)

21) Free Assange? Yes, But That’s Not Nearly Enough.
Source: Garrison Center
by Thomas L Knapp

“Be clear on this: Assange is a political prisoner, held for and charged with committing … journalism. … The US government hates having its crimes exposed and, First Amendment be damned, tries to make examples out of those who dare display its dirty laundry. While Assange obviously has more skin in the game than anyone else in this particular case, he’s not the real target. The real target is the NEXT journalist who catches the US government acting illegally. The goal is to make that journalist think twice before telling you about it. For that reason, stopping the extradition of Julian Assange isn’t enough. Nor should we settle for an acquittal in court or a presidential pardon. Crimes HAVE been committed, and examples DO need to made of the criminals who committed them.” (06/18/22)

22) No, social media are not destroying democracy
Source: spiked
by Matthew Lesh

“Have you heard that social media are destroying democracy? What about the idea that Facebook ‘filter bubbles’ are creating echo chambers and driving up partisanship? Maybe you’ve read that YouTube’s recommendation algorithm drives people into ‘rabbit holes’ with ever-more extreme content? Or that the business model of social-media firms means people routinely come across misinformation and fake news? These claims have become accepted truths in debates about social media. But there’s one (pretty major) problem with them. There’s a serious lack of evidence to show that any of these claims are true — and if they are at all true, these issues only seem to impact a small minority of people.” (06/20/22)

23) Assange Should Put the Pentagon and the CIA on Trial
Source: Future of Freedom Foundation
by Jacob G Hornberger

“With the recent decision by British Home Secretary Priti Patel to approve the extradition of Julian Assange to the United States, it is now a virtual certainty that Assange will soon be brought to the U.S. for trial. Let’s hope that he uses the opportunity to put the Pentagon and the CIA on trial. Yes, I know that whichever federal judge is appointed to preside over the trial will do his best to not permit that to happen, but what’s wrong with a little civil disobedience in what will inevitably be a rigged kangaroo court whose outcome of guilt will be preordained? Let’s not forget, after all, that Assange isn’t the criminal here.” (06/17/22)

24) The Real Reason “Cancel Culture” Is Destroying the American Workplace
Source: The Daily Beast
by Lacey Leone McLaughlin

“For the past five years, Americans have obsessed over cancel culture. Unfortunately, this debate has seeped into conversations around the corporate environment, from bosses and companies to industries. Often, the controversy depicts Gen Z and millennial employees as annoying, sensitive babies who refuse to adapt to the workplace. Much of the time, the debate centers around how seasoned bosses (also known as inflexible older managers) fear for their careers and maybe — at least according to the most dramatic parties in this debate — their lives. But this conversation fails to acknowledge what is actually happening at the office. Are we so busy focusing on the negative (the bad boss of the week if you will) that we miss out on how this moment offers huge opportunities for companies to leverage and improve their culture and their financial performance?” (06/20/22)

25) Gore v Trump: A case of contrasts
Source: The Hill
by Albert Hunt

“In 2000, Vice President Gore won the popular vote and certainly got more votes in Florida, though court decisions and ballot deficiencies gave the state and the presidency to George W. Bush. Five weeks after the election, exhausting legitimate recourses, Gore, with admirable grace, conceded. Five weeks after the 2020 election Trump, despite losing by a decisive 7 million votes, egged on by hangers-on — most either loony or drunk, was spinning his Big Lie that the election was stolen; he hasn’t stopped. … In contrast to the deceit and division peddled by Trump, whose own advisers testified he had no claim, Gore called Bush immediately after the 2000 High Court’s decision and, with eloquence and grace, conceded. … The following month, as vice president, Gore presided over Bush’s electoral college victory.” (06/19/22)

26) Assange Is Doing His Most Important Work Yet
Source: Caitlin Johnstone, Rogue Journalist
by Caitlin Johnstone

“British Home Secretary Priti Patel has authorized the extradition of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange to the United States to be tried under the Espionage Act in a case which seeks to set a legal precedent for the prosecution of any publisher or journalist, anywhere in the world, who reports inconvenient truths about the US empire. Assange’s legal team will appeal the decision, reportedly with arguments that will include the fact that the CIA spied on him and plotted his assassination. ‘It will likely be a few days before the (14-day appeal) deadline and the appeal will include new information that we weren’t able to bring before the courts previously. Information on how Julian lawyers were spied on, and how there were plots to kidnap and kill Julian from within the CIA,’ Assange’s brother Gabriel Shipton told Reuters on Friday.” (06/17/22)

27) How the Media Fueled the Lockdowns
Source: Brownstone Institute
by Michael Betrus

“COVID-19 triggered lockdowns around the world never before seen. It isn’t the worst pandemic the world has seen, so why were government interventions so swift? There are really two reasons. One, broadband and laptops. Had there not been ways to continue working for the governments and remote learning to bridge education, we’d have not seen lockdowns beyond May 2020. The second reason, tied to the first reason, is the media. The majority of the media coverage shamed any lockdown dissent and even drove it. Those that stood up to that, select states and even countries faced immense pressure from national and global media. Within the United States, the role of the media within government policy is to critically analyze, to keep them honest. With COVID-19, open debate about risks and government interventions was shut down.” (06/19/22)

28) Movies for Queers Who Throw Bricks
Source: exile in happy valley
by Nicky Reid

“It’s the first Pride Month since Covid has been defanged and I feel like going to the fucking movies. The only problem is that in 2022 all the movies fucking suck and what few Queer flicks that make it to the marquee are no exception to the rule. Every Hollywood asshole’s idea of diversity essentially amounts to giving some poor unfortunate niche another reboot hand-me-down of something that already sucked to begin with, as if an all-genderqueer version of Police Academy or Ghost Birthing Person starring Leslie Jones is some kind of great leap forward for progress rather than just another shallow, quota-checking, excuse for starlet raping producers to give themselves a rim-job for being nice to weird people between cocktails.” (06/19/22)

29) You can’t fix the past
Source: Kent’s “Hooligan Libertarian” Blog
by Kent McManigal

“There’s a recurring theme some government supremacists keep dragging out in an attempt to shame everyone: Americans — as ‘a people’ — didn’t keep government in line with what the Constitution allowed it to do. It’s all our fault, and specifically somehow my fault, according to those who think the Constitution was great (maybe even perfect). No matter that by the time Lincoln was neutralized, the damage had been done. How could things have been saved even then? It’s certainly too late to do anything about it now, and was already too late when your grandparents were children. But just accept that it’s your fault anyway. Somehow. You didn’t ‘democracy’ hard enough, I guess …” (06/19/22)

30) Media distancing itself from Joe Biden: They know he is “done”
Source: Fox News Forum
by Greg Gutfeld

“So poor Joe Biden is in such deep doo doo and not just his own, that the media seems to be turning their back on him. … And why? Well, they finally figured it out, Biden sucks harder than Brian Stelter trying to drink a shamrock shake through a crazy straw. So no one in the media is going to suck up anymore. They suddenly discovered objectivity, once he became objectively the worst president of the past 100 years. … At least [Biden Spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre] has a can do attitude, as in can do nothing. It’s not fair really, it sucks to have her job. I’d rather be the maid who changes Amber Heard’s sheets. This poor lady, all she can do is say, ‘we’re doing all we can do,’ and suddenly you’re in deep all you can do do.” (06/17/22)

Source: Tenth Amendment Center
by Suzanne Sherman

“The more radical the gun-grabbers call for the Second Amendment to be repealed. It’s a ridiculous goal, and it wouldn’t fundamentally change anything. The Constitution never delegated the power to regulate firearms in the first place; the Second Amendment only reconfirms this pre-existing right and bars the federal government from infringing on it. Accordingly, every federal firearms law, other than those arming militias, is unconstitutional — even without the Second Amendment.” (06/18/22)

32) The Deficit of Economic Understanding Is, Unfortunately, De Maximus
Source: Cafe Hayek
by Don Boudreaux

“Josh Zumbrun reports as newsworthy Jeff Ferry’s warning that America’s trade deficit with China is undercounted because of the exclusion from trade statistics of the value of de minimis imports (‘The Tiny Loophole That Understates the Trade Deficit With China,’ June 17). These imports are consumer goods brought by travelers into the U.S. in bundles worth less than $800. Yet rather than suggest that the protectionist Mr. Ferry is justified in raising concerns over the fact that America’s trade deficit with China is larger than is officially reported, Mr. Zumbrun should instead report this fact: In our world of more than two countries, any talk of one country’s trade deficit or surplus with any other individual country is utterly and indisputably nonsensical.” (06/18/22)

33) Keeping up appearances — DC style
Source: The Price of Liberty
by Nathan Barton

“The United States Army has, in the brass-hats’ infinite wisdom, converted US Army Alaska (USARAK) into the latest reincarnation of the 11th Airborne Division. This is, we are told, because the Arctic Strategy is very important. But it won’t add (supposedly) a single body to the 11,600 Army troops there in the 49th State (along with another 11,000 or so Active USAF, USSF, USMC, USN, USCG, PHS/IHS, and NOS uniformed personnel). (The Alaska Army National Guard has just 1,600 Guardsmen.) It apparently won’t even create another flag officer slot: both USARAK and the 11th AB have just a single two-star to share. Supposedly, it also won’t cost any money. (A claim that is a lie on its face.) So why? We are also told that the action is intended to boost soldier morale in the Last Frontier.” (06/18/22)

34) The Collapsing Pillars of the Iranian Regime
Source: Town Hall
by Struan Stevenson

“There were three pillars on which the Iranian regime was founded, following the 1979 revolution, hi-jacked by the elderly fanatical cleric Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. The first pillar was the system of velayat-e-faqih, or guardianship of the Islamic jurist, which laid the foundations for the first fundamentalist Islamic state and was written into the constitution. The second pillar was the complete transfer of all power and authority to the Supreme Leader and from him to the theocracy of ayatollahs and mullahs, who perversely claimed their authority came directly from God. The third and final pillar, carefully designed by Khomeini, was the creation of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps …. Today, the theocracy is so hated by 80 million repressed and impoverished Iranians, that only two pillars remain, velayat-e-faqih and the IRGC. Everyone knows that a stool with only two legs cannot persist.” (06/19/22)

35) What Can Healthcare Prices Teach About Inflationary Woes?
Source: American Institute for Economic Research
by Raymond J March

“According to data from the US Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics, medical inflation has increased 3-4 percent every year since 2010. Even in 2020, when healthcare access was strongly curtailed because of COVID-19, medical inflation measured 4.11 percent. The same data reveals that annual medical inflation has exceeded 8.6 percent five times since 1982. This is to say nothing of US healthcare expenditures, which comprises about 20 percent of GDP, and are expected to increase about 5.5 percent per year over the next decade. Despite passing countless regulations, politicians have made little progress in bringing down healthcare costs. But their failures have been quite lucrative. Politicians and special interests benefit from US healthcare’s expensiveness while the American public foots the bill. Public choice economics reminds us that political exchanges, like those between politicians and healthcare providers, result in concentrated benefits, but dispersed costs.” (06/18/22)

“We are now well past the corona crisis of 2020, and most of the restrictions around the world have been repealed or loosened. However, the long-term consequences of arbitrary and destructive corona policies are still with us — in fact, we are now in the middle of the inevitable economic crisis. Proclaiming the great crash and economic crisis of 2022 is at this point not especially prescient or insightful, as commentators have been predicting it for months. The cause is still somewhat obscure, as financial and economic journalism still focuses on whatever the Federal Reserve announces. But the importance of the Fed’s moves is greatly exaggerated.” (06/18/22)

37) Joe Biden has nothing to offer
Source: New York Post
by Michael Goodwin

“Near the end of an especially tumultuous week in his tumultuous presidency, Joe Biden gave his first media interview in four months to someone who wasn’t a late-night comedian. For a public hungering for answers, it wasn’t worth the wait. The president chose The Associated Press and the sit-down lasted a little less than 30 minutes, but that was more than enough time for him to demonstrate again he’s got no new ideas or even a new way of packaging old ideas. Biden acknowledges America is in a funk, but shows no sense of compassion or determination to turn the tide. Asked about the public mood, the president said, ‘People are really, really down.’ (Down, as Biden himself was after falling off his bike Saturday, an apt symbol of his presidency!)” (06/19/22)

38) Fauci and the Highest Stage of White Coat Supremacy
Source: Independent Institute

“Anthony Fauci earned a medical degree in 1966 and in 1968 took a job with the NIH. Dr. Fauci’s bio showed no advanced degrees in molecular biology or biochemistry, but in 1984 the NIH proclaimed Fauci director of NIAID. … Fauci, 81, has reversed himself many times but now claims ‘I represent science,’ and that those who criticize him are attacking science itself. If embattled Americans thought that was a symptom of megalomania it would be hard to blame them. Dr. Fauci represents white coat supremacy, the exercise of executive-level power with no need to face a vote of the people. White coat supremacy continues, even when the fallibilities of the ruling bureaucrats and their agencies are on full display.” (06/17/22)

It might have been an attempted coup — of the sort attempted by blithering idiots. That’s not to say our nation never faced any danger. 41) The US Could Lose the New Cold War With China & Russia
Source: Common Dreams
by Joseph Stiglitz

“The United States appears to have entered a new cold war with both China and Russia. And U.S. leaders’ portrayal of the confrontation as one between democracy and authoritarianism fails the smell test, especially at a time when the same leaders are actively courting a systematic human-rights abuser like Saudi Arabia. Such hypocrisy suggests that it is at least partly global hegemony, not values, that is really at stake. In seeking the world’s favor, the U.S. will have to make up a lot of lost ground. For two decades after the fall of the Iron Curtain, the U.S. was clearly number one. But then came disastrously misguided wars in the Middle East, the 2008 financial crash, rising inequality, the opioid epidemic, and other crises that seemed to cast doubt on the superiority of America’s economic model.” [editor’s note: And if “the United States” was not still bent on keeping empire intact, this would be a perfect time to disengage from that “cold” war – SAT] (06/19/22)

42) The Insane “Option” of Attacking Iran
Source: Eunomia
by Daniel Larison

“The U.S. debate over Iran’s nuclear program has been going on for at least two decades, but in the end it always comes back to this fantasy of using force to ‘stop’ Iran from building nuclear weapons. There are a few basic truths that we need to remember before we go down the rabbit hole that Brewer invites us to enter. First, the U.S. has absolutely no right or authority to attack Iran over its nuclear program, and this is true even if Iran chose to violate its commitments under the NPT by building a bomb. There is no universe in which that attack constitutes self-defense. Any attack on Iran for the purpose of destroying nuclear facilities would be illegal aggression. Second, military action would not ‘stop’ anything, but it would almost certainly accelerate Iran’s development of nuclear weapons …” (06/17/22)

Source: Niskanen Center
by Jennifer Doleac & Anna Harvey

“Recent mass shootings in Buffalo, New York, and Uvalde, Texas, have — like other mass shootings before them — prompted urgent calls for policy reform. Such shootings are unusually common in the United States. Many point to easy access to guns as the primary driver of such attacks; others point to limited security or insufficient access to mental health care. What is the most effective way to reduce the frequency or severity of such attacks? The answer likely depends on how one defines the incidents of interest.” (06/17/22)

44) It’s Not What Trump Knew, But What He Had a Responsibility To Know
Source: RealClearPolitics
by Mona Charen

“Watergate, whose 50th anniversary is upon us, is remembered for the question: ‘What did the president know and when did he know it?’ But in our age of post-truth politics, the question loses its punch. The Jan. 6 committee devoted the second of its public hearings to demonstrating beyond doubt that Donald Trump knew he had lost the 2020 election. The unstated assumption here is that Trump did not sincerely believe the election was stolen. He was told over and over again that it wasn’t and yet persisted in propagating a dangerous lie to the world. And therefore, he is responsible. With all due respect to the committee (and I wish them resounding success), that’s the wrong way to look at it. … Asking whether Trump knew the election was free and fair is like asking whether a komodo dragon prefers smooth jazz or hip hop. It’s a category error.” (06/17/22)

45) Three Things Biden Has Done That Increased Gas Prices
Source: DC Examiner
by Brad Polumbo

“Average gas prices recently passed $5 per gallon nationwide, setting a new record. This is bad news for workers’ budgets, and since it’s happening under President Joe Biden’s watch, it’s bad news for the Democratic Party’s electoral prospects. The White House has tried to deflect blame for the insane surge in gas prices onto Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. And, to be fair, gas prices are definitely not completely within any president’s control. They absolutely are influenced by global factors, and the disruption in the global energy market caused by Putin’s invasion certainly has contributed to higher prices. But Biden isn’t off the hook. Gas prices started rising long before the invasion, and the president still has direct responsibility for how his policies have contributed to this problem.” (06/18/22)

But the cover-up was a huge success in the fall of 1972 when — despite the mounting evidence of Nixon’s wrongdoing — voters reelected the president with ease. The maximalist sanctions on Russia imposed in response to Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine are proving to be no different. A recent Bloomberg report called attention to the unwelcome but predictable consequences of broad Russia sanctions: ‘But some Biden administration officials are now privately expressing concern that rather than dissuading the Kremlin as intended, the penalties are instead exacerbating inflation, worsening food insecurity and punishing ordinary Russians more than Putin or his allies.'” (06/17/22)

49) Labor Slams Pensions for Burnishing Image of Private Equity
Source: The American Prospect
by Lee Harris

“The chief executive of Washington State Investment Board (WSIB), one of the nation’s largest pension funds, has become a major-league booster for private equity firm Kohlberg Kravis Roberts’s Ownership Works, a nonprofit that proposes to help companies distribute equity shares to employees. CEO Allyson Tucker promoted the program at an investor conference last month in California, and sits on a leadership council for the organization with directors from other pensions, including California’s CalPERS, the State of Michigan Retirement System, and the New York State Common Retirement Fund. But the support from top pensions for KKR’s new public relations gambit has run into resistance from organized labor. Along with insurers and sovereign wealth funds, pensions have dramatically grown their allocations to private equity in recent years, forking over high fees in the hope that more exclusive markets deliver higher profits and withstand downturns.” (06/17/22)

50) The UK’s Decision to Extradite Assange Shows Why The US/UK’s Freedom Lectures Are a Farce
Source: Glenn Greenwald
by Glenn Greenwald

“The eleven-year persecution of Julian Assange was extended and escalated on Friday morning. The British Home Secretary, Priti Patel, approved the U.S.’s extradition request to send Julian Assange to Virginia to stand trial on eighteen felony charges under the 1917 Espionage Act and other statutes in connection with the 2010 publication by WikiLeaks of thousands of documents showing widespread corruption, deceit, and war crimes by American and British authorities along with their close dictatorial allies in the Middle East. This decision is unsurprising — it has been obvious for years that the U.S. and UK are determined to destroy Assange as punishment for his journalism exposing their crimes — yet it nonetheless further highlights the utter sham of American and British sermons about freedom, democracy and a free press.” (06/17/22)
