“Donald Trump hit [American buyers of goods from] dozens of US trading partners with tariffs while formalising recent deals with others, including the UK and EU, as he plunged the global economy into a new era of mercantile competition. [American buyers of goods from c]rucial exporters to the US such as Taiwan, the world’s most important semiconductor exporter, will incur steep new levies. Trump also raised tariffs on [American buyers of goods from] Canada, an ally and major trading partner, to 35 per cent. [American buyers of goods from] India [were] hit with a rate of 25 per cent and Switzerland with 39 per cent. The US president’s executive order on Thursday announcing the tariffs said they were designed to reduce America’s trade deficit with many countries, which it described as an ‘unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and economy of the United States.'” (07/31/25)

2) El Salvador: Congress scraps term limits, paving way for Bukele to rule indefinitely

“El Salvador’s congress has approved constitutional reforms to abolish presidential term limits, allowing President Nayib Bukele to run an unlimited number of times. The reform, reviewed under an expedited procedure, will also extend term times to from five to six years, while the next election will be brought forward to 2027. … The reform was adopted by Bukele’s 57 supporters in the Legislative Assembly, and voted against by only three opposition members. Critics say the move will entrench one-party rule in the country. … Bukele, 44, won a second term last year despite a clear prohibition in the country’s constitution. El Salvador’s top court, which is filled with Bukele-backed judges, ruled in 2021 that it was the leader’s human right to run again.” (08/01/25)

3) Arab League regimes condemn October 7 attack, call on Hamas to disarm

“The 22-nation Arab League has signed onto a declaration that condemns Hamas’[s] Oct. 7, 2023, attack on Israel and calls on Hamas to disarm. The league includes Qatar and Egypt, which have served as mediators in talks between Israel and Hamas during the subsequent war in Gaza. It also includes Turkey, which has adopted a stance of overt hostility toward Israel during the war. The league joined the entire European Union and 17 other countries in backing the declaration at a United Nations meeting hosted by Saudi Arabia and France. The meeting’s goal included discussion of a two-state solution in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, an objective that not all Arab League states had previously endorsed. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu opposes a two-state solution and his government panned the UN confab as a form of appeasement. 4) Myanmar: Junta Forms Commission to Hold Elections, State Media Says

“Myanmar’s ruling junta announced the formation of a 11-member commission led by military chief Min Aung Hlaing to hold an election in the war-torn country, state media reported on Thursday. 5) Ukraine: Parliament backs Zelenskyy’s retreat on gutting anti-corruption bodies

“The Ukrainian parliament on Thursday approved a bill submitted by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy last week that returned independence to key state anti-corruption agencies. Lawmakers in the judiciary committee had unanimously supported Zelenskyy’s new bill on Wednesday, after domestic protests – and a backlash from Brussels — helped shoot down a previous bill that would have kneecapped corruption watchdogs. The same MPs who voted for the law that brought the independent National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) and the Special Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAP) under the oversight of the politically appointed prosecutor general of Ukraine ultimately U-turned on the decision in the new vote Thursday.” (07/31/25)

6) Lithuania: Paluckas steps down as prime minister after investigations and protests

“Lithuanian Prime Minister Gintautas Paluckas stepped down Thursday, following investigations into his business dealings that prompted protests calling for his resignation. Paluckas, a newly established leader of the center-left Social Democrats, ascended to the role late last year after a three-party coalition formed following a parliamentary election in October in Lithuania. His entire Cabinet is also expected to resign, potentially leaving the Baltic country without an effective government weeks before Russia holds joint military exercises with neighboring Belarus.” (07/31/25)

7) UK: Sotheby’s returns Buddha jewels to India after uproar

“Auction house Sotheby’s has returned a set of sacred jewels believed to be linked to the Buddha’s remains to India, after facing mounting pressure from the Indian government and global Buddhist leaders. The Piprahwa Gems — described by archaeologists as one of the most astonishing finds of the modern era — were due to be auctioned in Hong Kong in May. But the sale was called off following diplomatic intervention and threats of legal action from Delhi. The Mumbai-based conglomerate Godrej Industries Group has acquired the jewels, Sotheby’s said. Sotheby’s said it was ‘delighted’ to facilitate the return, following two months of negotiations involving the owner, the new buyer and the Indian government. 8) VA: Attacker douses politician with gasoline, sets him on fire

“A man is in jail in Danville, Virginia, accused of intentionally setting City Councilman Lee Vogler on fire in a ‘personal attack’ unrelated to his political position or affiliation. Investigators said the suspect entered the local magazine office where Vogler works, doused him in a flammable liquid, and set him on fire outside the building. … A receptionist from a nearby business reported that one of their employees saw Vogler and rushed to help extinguish the flames. Vogler was later airlifted to a burn unit at a hospital in Chapel Hill. [Shotsie] Hayes was found several blocks away and taken into custody, charged with attempted first-degree murder and aggravated malicious wounding.” (07/31/25/25)

9) Microsoft poised for $4 trillion valuation after solid results

“Microsoft is set to soar past $4 trillion in market valuation for the first time on Thursday, as a blockbuster earnings report helps the tech behemoth become the second company after Nvidia to surpass the milestone. The software company forecast a record $30 billion in capital spending for the current fiscal first quarter and reported booming sales in its Azure cloud computing business on Wednesday. Shares of Microsoft were up 8.5% at $557.03 in early premarket trading, valuing it at $4.14 trillion.” (07/31/25)

10) China: Regime summons Nvidia over “backdoor safety risks” in H20 chips

“China’s cyberspace regulators on Thursday summoned Nvidia over security concerns that its H20 chips can be tracked and turned off remotely, the Cyberspace Administration of China said on its website. In the meeting, Chinese regulators demanded that the U.S. chip company provide explanations on ‘backdoor safety risks’ of its H20 chips to be sold in China and submit relevant materials, the office said. ‘Cybersecurity is critically important to us. NVIDIA does not have ‘backdoors’ in our chips that would give anyone a remote way to access or control them,’ an Nvidia spokesperson said in a statement to AP. It came just about two weeks after the Trump administration lifted the block on the computing chips and allowed Nvidia to resume sales of H20 chips to the Chinese market. Jensen Huang, chief executive of Nvidia, made the announcement with fanfare when he was in Beijing earlier this month.” (07/31/25)

11) Science: “Communities” of strange, extreme life seen for first time in deep ocean

“Beds of clams, mats of bacteria that look like ice and fields of tube worms – these are just some examples of the strange, extreme life that an expedition to the deepest parts of the ocean has observed, filmed and photographed. Diving in a human-occupied submersible to ocean trenches in the northwest Pacific Ocean, a Chinese-led research team captured pictures of life at depths of more than 9km (5.6miles). The deepest marine vertebrate life filmed before this expedition was at 8,336m — a snailfish that was filmed swimming in a deep ocean trench off the coast of Japan in 2023. 12) Macau: “National security police” arrest former lawmaker for supposed unapproved attitude

“Macau national security police have arrested a man – reportedly a prominent opposition figure and former lawmaker – for alleged collusion with foreign forces, in what is believed to be the first case of its kind in the gambling hub. The Macau Judiciary Police on Thursday said it had arrested a 68-year-old resident, surnamed Au, the day before for acts that allegedly helped foreign organisations to disseminate false information about the city and arouse hatred among residents towards the government. Local media have reported that the resident is Au Kam-san, a prominent opposition figure and former lawmaker, who for decades advocated for democratic reforms in Macau. … The statement added that the suspect had also allegedly engaged in acts that incited hatred towards the central government, encouraged ‘anti-China forces’ to take hostile actions against China and Macau, and disrupted last year’s chief executive elections.” (07/31/25)

13) Vatican strikes solar farm deal to become the world’s first carbon-neutral state

“Italy agreed Thursday to a Vatican plan to turn a 430-hectare (1,000-acre) field north of Rome, once the source of controversy between the two, into a vast solar farm that the Holy See hopes will generate enough electricity to meet its needs and turn Vatican City into the world’s first carbon-neutral state. The agreement stipulates that the development of the Santa Maria Galeria site will preserve the agricultural use of the land and minimize the environmental impact on the territory, according to a Vatican statement. Details weren’t released, but the Vatican will be exempt from paying Italian taxes to import the solar panels, but won’t benefit from the financial incentives that Italians enjoy when they go solar. Italy, for its part, can use the field in its accounting for reaching European Union clean energy targets.” (07/31/25)

14) Trump, South Korean regime strike deal to at least quintuple Americans’ taxes on purchases

15) CO: Dentist jailed for murder after poisoning wife’s protein shakes

“A US dentist who poisoned his wife has been sentenced to life in prison without parole after a Colorado jury found him guilty of murder and other charges. James Craig, 47, had been having an affair when he plotted to kill his wife Angela Craig in March 2023. After lacing his wife’s protein shakes with arsenic, he gave her a fatal dose of cyanide while she lay ill in hospital, prosecutors said. Prosecutors also argued during a two-week trial that the dentist felt trapped in his marriage but was facing financial troubles and did not want a divorce. Defence lawyers had argued that Angela Craig, who was then 43, died by suicide because she was heartbroken about her husband’s ‘constant’ affairs. However, the Arapahoe County coroner determined that she died as a result of cyanide and tetrahydrozoline, a chemical used in eye drops.” (07/31/25)

16) Canada: Regime to recognize Palestinian state

“Prime Minister Mark Carney says Canada intends to recognize a Palestinian state ahead of September’s United Nations General Assembly. … The recognition is predicated on the Palestinian Authority’s commitment to reform its governance and to hold general elections in 2026 ‘in which Hamas can play no part,’ Carney said. The prime minister said he outlined the conditions with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas ahead of his announcement. Notorious defense attorney Alan Dershowitz announced that he’s suing a farmer’s market on Martha’s Vineyard after the market’s resident pierogi stand refused to serve him. … the retired Harvard law professor stopped by the pierogi stand and asked if he could have six of the potato dumplings. ‘No,’ replied the vendor. ‘Oh, you’ve run out of pierogi? Too bad,’ Dershowitz said he replied. ‘No, we have plenty of pierogi,’ the person behind the counter replied, according to the lawyer. ‘I just won’t sell them to you. … I don’t approve of who you’ve represented. “Algeria recently enacted a sweeping new law that criminalizes any form of use, exchange, or mining of cryptocurrencies. The move is reportedly intended to protect the national financial system and bolster defenses against money laundering and terrorist financing. … the issuance, purchase, sale, possession and promotion of digital currencies is prohibited. The law also criminalizes the creation or operation of cryptocurrency trading platforms and the use of digital wallets — whether directly or via third parties or online services. 19) European Union assumes it faces 15% tariffs in the US starting on Friday

“The European Union is working on the assumption that the United States will impose a 15% tariff on most EU exports from Friday, even though the two sides have yet to complete a key document clarifying how the agreement will operate. Last weekend, U.S. President Donald Trump and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen reached a political agreement that would see 15% duties imposed on around two-thirds of EU produce, worth around 380 billion euros ($434 billion). The tariffs are set to enter force on Friday, but as of Thursday the two sides were still working on a joint statement that would lay out the terms of their understanding, European Commission spokesman Olof Gill said. “‘My bill,’ US Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) tweeted in June, ‘will require the U.S. Census Bureau to conduct a new census immediately upon enactment of the bill. In conducting the new census of the U.S. population, it shall require questions determining the citizenship of each individual, and count US citizens only.’ The money shot: ‘[T]he bill will direct states to immediately begin a redistricting of all U.S. House seats process using only the population of United States citizens.’ Naturally, US president Donald Trump supports the idea. So does Florida governor Ron DeSantis. Why? Because Republicans want to rig future elections by re-drawing — that is, re-gerrymandering — the American political map to benefit themselves. “The government’s war on homelessness — much like its war on terrorism, its war on drugs, its war on illegal immigration, and its war on COVID-19 — is yet another Trojan Horse. … An Orwellian exercise in doublespeak, Trump’s executive order suggests that jailing the homeless, rather than providing them with affordable housing, is the ‘compassionate’ solution to homelessness. … Trump wants to see more use of civil commitments (forced detentions) for anyone who is perceived as posing a risk ‘to themselves or the public or are living on the streets and cannot care for themselves in appropriate facilities for appropriate periods of time.’ Translation: the government wants to use homelessness as a pretext for indefinitely locking up anyone who might pose a threat to its chokehold on police state power.” (07/31/25)
