1)  UK: Johnson faces new calls to resign over Downing Street lockdown party
Source: ABC News

"U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson faced new calls for his resignation over a party he and his wife attended with Downing Street staff in May 2020, when the country was under lockdown. Johnson apologized on Wednesday for attending the event, which he said he thought was a work meeting, although rules in the U.K. at the time said households could only meet with one other person in outdoor settings. News that Johnson's private secretary, Martin Reynolds, had sent an email to more than 100 staffers, telling them to make the most of the summer weather and 'bring your own booze' was leaked to ITV News, the latest in a series of alleged breaches of lockdown rules by the prime minister's team. ... Johnson apologized for attending the party and called for patience as an internal investigation looked into the claims." (01/12/22)

2)  Palestine: Palestinian-American dies after abduction by Israeli occupiers
Source: New York Times

"An elderly Palestinian American was found dead early Wednesday shortly after a brief detention by Israeli troops in a village in the occupied West Bank, prompting the U.S. government to call for an investigation into his death. The man, who was named by American and Palestinian officials as Omar Asad, died of a heart attack after being detained during a nighttime raid on Jiljilya, a Palestinian village near the city of Ramallah, the Palestinian Health Ministry said in a statement. The ministry said he was 80. The Israeli Army said in a statement that a Palestinian man in Jiljilya 'was apprehended after resisting a check' during an Israeli raid, before later being released alive. The statement added that the Israeli military police were investigating the incident." (01/12/22)

3)  "US Coast Guard" pirates abduct 176, pretend it was a "rescue"
Source: CBC [Canadian state media]

"The U.S. Coast Guard pulled 176 Haitians from an overloaded, unseaworthy wooden sailing vessel as it approached the Florida Keys, officials said. The rescue [sic] effort unfolded on Monday after a flight crew with Customs and Border Protection Air and Marine Operations spotted the 60-foot vessel some 40 kilometres northeast of Anguilla Cay, Bahamas, the Coast Guard said in a news release. ... The group of Haitians will be processed for removal proceedings and transferred to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, CPB spokesperson Alan Regalado said." 4)  GA: Kemp seeks $1.6 billion in state tax rebates worth $250 or $500
Source: Sacramento Bee

"Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp wants to use $1.6 billion of the state's $2.2 billion in spare cash to give rebates in April on state income taxes. The Republican told the Georgia Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday that he wants to give a $250 rebate to every single person filing state income taxes, and $500 to every household filing jointly. The money would come from part of the huge budget surplus that the state ran last year. Even after filling Georgia's rainy day fund to its legal limit, the state had $2.2 billion in cash left over. The rebates are the centerpiece of Kemp's emerging strategy to put cash in the hands of as many voters as possible, as quickly as possible, as he tries to get reelected this year. Kemp faces a tough GOP primary ahead of a challenging general election campaign against likely Democratic nominee Stacey Abrams." (01/12/22)

5)  Confused Harris forgets she's veep, thinks she's pope
Source: The Hill

"Vice President Harris said in an interview that she would not 'absolve' 50 Republican senators opposing Democrats' voting rights and election legislation of their responsibility to hold 'free and fair elections and access to the ballot.' ... [NBC's Craig] Melvin asked Harris about Sens. Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.) and Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), who have both expressed opposition to getting rid of the 60-vote Senate filibuster -- a legislative rule currently blocking Democrats from being able to pass voting rights legislation amid Republican opposition. 'I don't think anyone should be absolved from the responsibility of preserving and protecting our democracy,' Harris answered. 'Especially when they took an oath to protect and defend our Constitution.'" 6)  UK: Doctor no longer allowed to practice after branding patients' livers with his initials
Source: CBS News

"A doctor in the U.K. has been removed from the country's medical register for branding patients' livers with his initials. The incidents occurred in February and August 2013, when Simon Bramhall used a surgical device to write his initials on transplanted livers at the end of two surgeries. The 1.6-inch initials were discovered by another doctor when an organ transplanted by Bramhall failed after about a week, according to BBC News. In 2017, Bramhall pleaded guilty and was convicted of two counts common assault, according to documents from the U.K.'s Medical Practice Tribunal Service, known as MPTS, which hears complaints against doctors and determines if they are fit to practice. He was fined £10,000 ($13,619.90 U.S. dollars) and sentenced to community service." (01/12/22)

7)  US prosecutors charge man with supplying performance-enhancing drugs to Olympians
Source: USA Today

"U.S. prosecutors charged a Texas man on Wednesday with providing performance-enhancing drugs to athletes competing in the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, including the star Nigerian sprinter Blessing Okagbare. Eric Lira, 41, of El Paso, is the first person to be charged under a new U.S. anti-doping law governing international sports competitions. The U.S. Attorney's Office in Manhattan said Lira distributed the drugs, including human growth hormone and erythropoietin, a blood-building hormone, 'for the purpose of corrupting' the 2020 Games. Lira also is accused of conspiring to violate drug misbranding and adulteration laws. It was not immediately clear whether he had an attorney who could comment on the charges. The criminal complaint does not name Okagbare, but includes details suggesting she was among Lira's clients. A text message was sent to Okagbare seeking comment." (01/12/22)

8)  UBS: Fed is likely behind the curve in shrinking its balance sheet
Source: CNBC

"The Federal Reserve is behind the curve when it comes to shrinking the balance sheet, according to UBS Global Wealth Management's Kelvin Tay. Fed Chairman Jerome Powell said Tuesday that he expects a series of interest rate hikes this year, along with other reductions in the extraordinary help the central bank has provided during the pandemic. 'If you take a step backwards and you listen to what he said. He hasn't actually acknowledged that the Federal Reserve is actually behind the curve -- but they certainly are,' Tay told CNBC's 'Squawk Box Asia' on Wednesday. ... 'at this point in time they are still printing. So you must be wondering why they are still printing at this level, right?,' he said, adding key developments going forward will be how fast and how much the Fed shrinks its balance sheet." 9)  Canada: Quebec regime to impose health tax on unvaccinated
Source: BBC News [UK state media]

"The Canadian province of Quebec will charge a health tax to residents who are not vaccinated against Covid-19. Quebec, which has seen the highest number of Covid-related deaths in Canada, is currently struggling with a surge in cases. On Tuesday, the premier announced that it would be the first in the nation to financially penalise the unvaccinated. Only about 12.8% of Quebec residents are not vaccinated, but they make up nearly a third of all hospital cases. According to federal data, just over 85% of Quebec residents had received at least one vaccine dose by 1 January. Premier Francois Legault said during a news conference that people who have not received their first dose of vaccine will have to pay a 'contribution.' The fee has not yet been decided, but will be 'significant,' he said." (01/12/22)

10) Russia, China block UN Security Council from supporting new sanctions on Mali
Source: France 24 [French state media]

"Russia and China blocked the U.N. Security Council on Tuesday from supporting new sanctions on Mali for its military leaders' decision to delay next month's elections until 2026, a blow to the restoration of democracy in the troubled West African nation. Kenya's U.N. ambassador, Martin Kimani, said after closed-door discussions on the proposed French-drafted statement endorsing the sanctions imposed by the West African regional group ECOWAS he was 'disappointed' that the council couldn't agree on what he called a 'relatively mild' press statement. ... The junta initially had agreed to hold a new election in late February but the military leadership now says the presidential ballot will not take place until 2026 because of deepening insecurity across the country, giving [Col. Assimi] Goita four more years in power." (01/12/22)

11) Cyprus: Regime swaps student quarantine for five days of virus tests
Source: San Francisco Chronicle

"Cyprus is changing its compulsory quarantine rules for school children in an effort to keep pupils in school amid surging coronavirus infections, the country's health minister said Wednesday. Under the new system, schoolkids who were in close contact with classmates who test positive will no longer face compulsory quarantine. Instead, they must undergo either a rapid or a self-test for five consecutive days while continuing to attend school, so long as they test negative. Minister Michalis Hadjipantela said after a Cabinet meeting that the month-long effort starting next week will apply to primary and secondary students regardless if they've been vaccinated or not. The aim of the so-called 'test to stay' scheme is to keep schools running by quickly identifying and isolating newly infected students without keeping classmates away from lessons." (01/12/22)

12) Sharpton: Biden's voting address a "you're going to hell" speech, not a vote-getting one
Source: Fox News

"MSNBC's Al Sharpton said President Biden's emotionally charged address Tuesday didn't seem like one intended to win support for sweeping Democratic election legislation, calling it a 'you're going to hell' speech. Sharpton .... was on hand for Biden's Atlanta address, where the president framed the debate over Democratic election overhauls in stark terms: Either you were with reviled figures like segregationist Gov. George Wallace and Confederate President Jefferson Davis, or on the side of civil rights leaders Martin Luther King Jr., and the late John Lewis, whom one of the proposed Democratic voting bills is named after. MSNBC 'Morning Joe' host Joe Scarborough said Biden's rhetoric 'may have overshot the mark', as he seeks to persuade moderate Democrats like Sens. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., and Kyrsten Sinema, D-Ariz., to eliminate the filibuster, which creates a 60-vote threshold to advance legislation." (01/12/22)

13) US airport security theatrics: Flights grounded after North Korean missile test
Source: Time

"Flights out of some airports on the U.S. West Coast were briefly halted by aviation regulators as a precaution on Monday after North Korea launched a high-speed missile in a test. The so-called ground stop, which paused departures from an unspecified number of airports, lasted less than 15 minutes. North Korea's missile [allegedly] flew at almost 10 times the speed of sound into waters off its eastern coast, ratcheting up tensions in the region and with the U.S." (01/12/22)

14) Prince Andrew to face civil sex assault case after US ruling
Source: BBC News [UK state media]

"Prince Andrew is to face a civil case in the US over allegations he sexually assaulted a woman when she was 17. Virginia Giuffre is suing the prince, claiming he abused her in 2001. His lawyers said the case should be thrown out, citing a 2009 deal she signed with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. But a New York judge ruled that the case could be heard. The prince has consistently denied the claims. Buckingham Palace said it would not comment on an ongoing legal matter. The motion to dismiss the lawsuit was outlined in a 46-page decision by Judge Lewis A Kaplan of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. It means the case against the Duke of York, 61, could be heard later this year. Judge Kaplan said his ruling did not determine the 'truth or falsity' of Ms Giuffre's complaint." (01/12/22)

15) EU Says "Premature" to Have Urgent WTO Meeting on Covid-19
Source: Common Dreams

"After over a year of the European Union blocking a proposed waiver of intellectual property rights for Covid-19 vaccines -- and as case numbers surge thanks to the Omicron variant -- an E.U. representative on Monday called India's proposal for a World Trade Organization conference on pandemic response 'premature.' 'The pandemic hasn't lasted long enough for the E.U.?' asked Dimitri Eynikel, who represents Médecins Sans Frontieres (MSF), or Doctors Without Borders, on the issue of access to medicines at the European Union. Eynikel highlighted that the E.U. has been a primary barrier to waiving parts of the World Trade Organization (WTO) Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS), which India and South Africa first suggested back in October 2020." 16) OK: Man's alleged bizarre rampage ends with him shot, killed by homeowner
Source: KFOR News

"The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation is working to identify a suspect who was killed after a homeowner shot him for allegedly trying to break into his home. .... The OSBI said it all started at a KFC near Arkansas and Fourth Street, when a man backed up a silver Mustang through the front glass doors of the restaurant. ... The man took off down the street where authorities said he plowed through several yards before trying to ram his car into a home's porch, thankfully not causing any damage. Investigators said he hopped out of the car and headed for the front door. 'He was knocking on doors, knocking on windows, just basically causing a general disruption,' said Brooke Arbeitman, the spokesperson for the OSBI. 'The homeowner had a weapon and fired shots, and the suspect there was killed inside the home.'" (01/12/22)

'Honestly, I'm using Venmo because there's no taxes,' and if it 'starts to have taxes, I'm not using it anymore,' one Venmo user told Fox News. Effective Jan. 1, third-party payment processors are required to report a user's business transactions to the IRS if they exceed $600 for the year. Previously, payment apps like PayPal, Zelle and Cash App were required to send users Form 1099-K only if their gross income exceeded $20,000 and if they had 200 separate transactions within a calendar year." The al-Shabab extremist group claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it was targeting 'white officials' passing by. Dr. Abdulkadir Adam with the Medina hospital told The Associated Press about the death toll. Witnesses at the scene said a passing U.N. convoy appeared to be the target in the blast near a checkpoint leading to the heavily fortified airport, but the U.N. mission said there were no U.N. personnel or contractors in the convoy." 19) US consumer prices rise at fastest rate in nearly 40 years
Source: BBC News [UK state media]

"Prices in the US are rising at their fastest rate in almost 40 years, with inflation up 7% year-on-year in December. Strong demand and scarce supply for key items such as cars are driving the increases, which are putting pressure on policymakers to act. The US central bank is expected to raise interest rates this year. The rise in borrowing costs is aimed at reducing demand by making purchases such as cars more expensive. December's increase marked the third month in a row that the US annual inflation rate has hovered above 6% -- well north of policymakers' 2% target. The last time the pace of inflation exceeded that level was 1982. Housing costs were up 4.1% year-on-year, while the cost of groceries rose 6.5%, compared to a 1.5% annual average over the last 10 years. Wednesday's report from the Labor Department showed signs that some of the pressures may be easing." (01/12/22)

21) Facebook Is a Snitch
Source: Reason
by JD Tuccille

"This shouldn't be a revelation, but posting the details of your life online is not an effective way to keep secrets. Among those trawling for information are government agents who find social media an easy and low-cost means of gathering intelligence, often with the cooperation of both the platforms and their targets. Since the information is easily gathered, cops and their private-sector contractors snoop on us not just to investigate crimes but also while fishing for anything of interest. Worse, instead of curbing such abuses, many politicians want more." (01/12/22)

22) DC's Stance on Ukraine Is as Divorced From Reality as Its COVID Regime
Source: Foundation for Economic Education
by Tom Mullen

"The Charge of the Light Brigade occurred during the siege of Sevastopol during the Crimean War (1853-56). Despite the Light Brigade disaster, the port city finally fell to the British and French allies, but not before the Russian Empire sank its entire Black Sea fleet in the harbor to prevent it from falling into enemy hands. That desperate act should provide a warning to Washington. ... The Russians are never going to give up that port. They've bled for it in the past far more than any American army has ever bled for anything. It is an existential matter for them. ... Meanwhile, it makes not one iota of difference to Americans living in the United States if Russia annexed all of Ukraine, much less Crimea. Washington's interests in the region are purely imperial and contrary to those of most U.S. citizens." (01/12/22)

23) Is Anyone Going to Accept Responsibility for This?
Source: Brownstone Institute
by Joakim Book

"In a Senate hearing, Rand Paul said plainly to Anthony Fauci what everyone knows and is the most easily documented fact in the US experience of the pandemic: 'You are the one responsible, you are the architect -- you are the lead architect for the response from the government.' Fauci very quickly protested: 'Senator, first of all, if you look at everything I said, you accuse me of, in a monolithic way, telling people what they need to do. Everything that I've said has been in support of the CDC guidelines.' ... This is typical for episodes in history that are characterized by mass frenzy and distorted fanaticism. Once the mania is gone, it is hard to find anyone who is willing to accept responsibility for feeding it and acting upon it." (01/12/22)

25) What the Regime Will Do to Fight Private Digital Currencies
Source: Ludwig von Mises Institute
by Ryan McMaken

"[W]hen it comes to propping up the official currency, a regime or central bank has several tools. For one, the regime can continue to make a certain currency legal tender. Contrary to what many believe, this does not force people to use a certain currency for all transactions. Nevertheless, legal tender laws do impel users of money to favor one specific money over others for the repayment of loans and other uses. Moreover, a regime can mandate that tax bills be paid in the currency of the regime's choosing. ... Beyond legal tender laws, the regime could use the tax code to punish the use of private currencies in other ways. Charging capital gains taxes on alternative money is just one method. Regimes have been known to become quite creative when it comes to punitive taxes against activities the regime does not like." (01/12/22)

President Joe Biden, mindful that he leads a nation increasingly skeptical of foreign intervention, wanted to make a gesture toward ending American involvement in another endless war in the Greater Middle East. However, less than a month after the supposed shift to a non-combat mission, Americans in Iraq once again found themselves under fire. ... As long as American service men and women remain in Iraq, they will be under regular attack and engaged in what any reasonable person would call combat. Instead of pretending that American troops in Iraq are not deployed in a combat mission, the Biden administration should withdraw them." (01/12/22)

28) The Other Big Lie
Source: Common Sense
by Paul Jacob

"For years, Democrats slammed laws requiring voters to show photo identification as 'racist,' contending the requirement disproportionately suppressed black voters. But then, when polls demonstrated that voters 'of color' are even more supportive of Voter ID laws than are whites, Democrats quickly insisted they had always been for such laws. Now -- keep up! -- voter ID laws are back to being suppressive. And the very purpose of the Dems' Freedom to Vote Act is to strike down all such state laws." [editor's note: It seems to me that there's room for a Grand Bargain here. One side gets laws requiring photo ID to vote. The other side gets disqualification/recall of all prior election results (yes, including ratification of the Constitution) since photo ID, which is obviously necessary, wasn't required to vote. 29) Leave Cuba, and Leave Cuba Alone
Source: Future of Freedom Foundation
by Jacob G Hornberger

"The Pentagon and the CIA have never forgiven the communist regime in Cuba for defeating and humiliating the CIA at the Bay of Pigs, when Fidel Castro's communist forces killed or captured the CIA-trained invading force of Cuban exiles. They have also never forgiven the Cuban Reds for handing President Kennedy what they considered to be the biggest defeat in U.S. history with his peaceful resolution of the Cuban Missile Crisis. That's why there is still a brutal embargo against the Cuban people .... The ultimate solution to all this despicable anti-American mayhem is twofold: (1) Don't just close Gitmo. Instead abandon it and leave it to the Cubans. .... (2) Lift the U.S. embargo against Cuba completely. Stop prosecuting Americans who travel to Cuba and spend money there. Stop punishing foreigners for trading with Cuba." (01/12/22)

30) Stimulus & Wages, What Exactly Happened?
Source: American Institute for Economic Research
by Siddharth Gundapanemi

"In wake of the Covid-19 induced recession, former President Trump and President Biden passed three stimulus packages in an attempt to rejuvenate the economy. Following passage of the final stimulus act, critics have been sounding the alarm, citing that real wages have fallen relative to rising rates of inflation, at least in part caused by the exorbitant stimulus packages. While such statements do have their merits, the issue tends to be much more nuanced than some may assert. In this analysis, we will examine trends in wages among varying demographics, and offer insight as to why certain unprecedented trends may have transpired." 31) Before Judging Vaccines, the Court Should Judge Itself
Source: The Volokh Conspiracy
by Phillip Hamburger

"The Biden administration has imposed COVID-19 vaccinations on all healthcare workers at Medicare and Medicaid participating facilities as a condition of federal funding. When this condition came before the Supreme Court last Friday in Biden v. Missouri, the justices aptly inquired whether it departed from the Constitution. But they should have also considered their own departures from the Constitution. They then might have understood the administration's conduct with greater clarity. The Constitution leaves the federal government much power to spend through its enumerated powers, but does not give Congress a general spending power. Such a move was considered by the Constitutional Convention but clearly abandoned. Nonetheless, the Court -- uninhibited by history, intent, or text -- says that Congress has a general spending power, thereby giving Congress a power to spend that exceeds even its inflated power to regulate." 32) These Lawsuits Argue That Trump Conspired to Incite Capitol Riot
Source: Town Hall
by Jacob Sullum

"After Donald Trump's second impeachment trial ended in acquittal, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky) suggested that the former president could still be held civilly or criminally liable for his role in the Capitol riot that happened a year ago last Thursday. But as three lawsuits that a federal judge considered this week show, those options require proving that Trump deliberately provoked the violence that day, which is a tall order. The Trump supporters who broke into the Capitol, interrupting the congressional tally of the presidential election results, came to Washington, D.C., at his behest. They were motivated by Trump's fantasy of a stolen election, which he had been promoting for months and reiterated in a fiery pre-riot speech at a rally a mile and a half from the Capitol." 33) The hysterical fantasy of an impending civil war
Source: spiked
by Frank Furedi

"Why are so many among America's political and media elite determined to present what happened on 6 January as something it was not? At first sight it is tempting to dismiss this catastrophist framing of the Capitol riot as pure scaremongering propaganda. But it is more than that. Sections of the political and cultural establishment really are fearful. Not because of what actually happened a year ago, but because they have become so paranoid about what they perceive as the threat of populism that they have lost the capacity to assess threats objectively. This paranoia hasn't come out of nowhere. Rather it has its roots in the elite's growing anxiety about the people -- the demos. Indeed, in the 21st-century, this anxiety has become pathological -- it has become demosphobia." (01/12/22)

34) Lethal Autonomous Weapons Systems and the Fight to Contain Them
Source: CounterPunch
by Rebecca Gordon

"Here's a scenario to consider: a military force has purchased a million cheap, disposable flying drones each the size of a deck of cards, each capable of carrying three grams of explosives -- enough to kill a single person or, in a 'shaped charge,' pierce a steel wall. They've been programmed to seek out and 'engage' (kill) certain human beings, based on specific 'signature' characteristics like carrying a weapon, say, or having a particular skin color. They fit in a single shipping container and can be deployed remotely. Once launched, they will fly and kill autonomously without any further human action. Science fiction? Not really. It could happen tomorrow. The technology already exists." (01/12/22)

35) Against Land Acknowledgements
Source: Quillette
by Stuart Reges

"[Indigenous land acknowledgements] are sombre declarations intended to acknowledge that land now used for some event or purpose was once inhabited by indigenous tribes (some acknowledgements add that the land was unjustly taken). They are rather like ritual acts of expiatory prayer, usually recited by rote from a standardized text. It doesn't seem to matter much whether or not the speaker actually agrees with the sentiments expressed; what's important is that the required words are spoken. ... At first, I just ignored these performative displays -- they are faintly annoying and serve no practical purpose, but they struck me as basically harmless. As their appearances become more persistent, however, I began to worry that they represent affirmation of a specific ideology. As such, they constitute a flagrant violation of the institutional neutrality recommended by the University of Chicago's Kalven Report in 1967." (01/12/22)

36) School closures make the case for school choice
Source: Fox News
by Frederick Hess

"Public schools have historically played a reliable, vital role in American communities. That's why, for many decades, Americans say they like and trust teachers and more than three-quarters give their own kids' schools an 'A' or a 'B.' Well, the way public school leaders and teachers have responded to the pandemic has seemed designed to shatter that trust. In Chicago, teachers who earn more than $78,000 for a 10-month year refused to show up for work, forcing students to stay home from school for several days. All this in a school district that requires universal masking and social distancing, is supplying 200,000 KN95 masks for staff use, offers in-school COVID testing at every campus, has spent $141 million on mechanical system upgrades, and where 91 percent of teachers are vaccinated." 39) The Bold Economic Move Joe Biden Refuses to Make
Source: The Atlantic
by Russell Berman

"As Senator Elizabeth Warren sees it, President Joe Biden can solve a lot of problems -- for millions of Americans financially, and for himself politically -- with a single move that neither Senator Joe Manchin nor any Republican in Congress could veto. The president, she says, should unilaterally wipe out up to $50,000 in student-loan debt for every federal borrower in the country. Warren has been beating this drum for just about two years, ever since she unveiled the proposal in a bid to outflank her rivals -- including Biden -- in the 2020 Democratic presidential primary. The senator from Massachusetts has won influential converts to her cause over the past year, most notably Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer. But Biden is not one of them. 'I will not make that happen,' he bluntly told a questioner asking about the proposal at a town hall a few weeks after he took office." (01/12/22)

40) Are budget interruptions a "catastrophe" for military readiness? Hardly
Source: Responsible Statecraft
by Andrew Lautz

"Every year, Congress is in charge of debating and passing appropriations legislation that funds more than $1.5 trillion in annual government spending. Almost every year, Congress fails to do their job on time. Appropriations bills are technically due by October 1 of each year, because that is when a new fiscal year starts, but Congress is almost always late. When they're late, lawmakers usually pass what's called a continuing resolution, which funds government programs at the same levels as the immediately previous fiscal year. ... Sen. Jon Tester (D-Mont.), the top Democratic Senator in charge of defense appropriations, said just last week that 'a CR would be a catastrophe for our defense,' echoing concerns of military officials. But is this really the case? Not quite, says one of the top government watchdogs responsible for overseeing federal government agencies and their performance." (01/12/22)

"The United States is tumbling toward socio-political crisis. Here are just a few of the distress signals recently visible: [shows list, with some items a stretch of the facts] ... We've all seen this basic movie plot before -- in 'failed states' in the modern world, and in declining civilizations throughout history -- and it seldom ends well. For a society to succeed, people must cooperate. They must trust government leaders, who in turn must work together, at least partly for the benefit of the society as a whole. In every society, and in every era, there are instances of disagreement and cheating at all levels of the power structure; but, when acrimony and criminality are held in check, and when the populace is motivated by shared aspirations and ideals, societies thrive. When social trust erodes significantly, societies fail." (01/12/22)

42) The Big Lie's Long Shadow
Source: FiveThirtyEight
by Kaleigh Rogers

"Since the 2020 election, hundreds of new voter restriction bills have been introduced in state legislatures across the country, and dozens were enacted into law. In many cases, these bills were a response to the Big Lie. Those incessant claims of fraud created an appetite among Republican voters for answers, solutions and, most importantly, justice. In response, a vast network of right-wing influencers -- both emergent and established -- began feeding that appetite by investigating dubious claims and concocting new election laws. State legislators have heeded the call. FiveThirtyEight created a database cataloging these acts at the state level, including every voter restriction bill introduced and every third-party partisan audit conducted." (01/11/22)

"U.S. troops are still living with the consequences of Trump's decision two years ago to assassinate Iranian Qods Force commander, Qassem Soleimani. ... the drone strike that killed Soleimani and an Iraqi militia leader at the Baghdad airport provoked the largest ballistic missile attack on US forces and completely failed in deterring further attacks on US forces in Iraq and Syria. More than a hundred troops were injured in the missile attack on Al Asad base, and dozens of them suffered serious traumatic brain injuries. ... While there were fortunately no fatalities in that missile attack, we should also remember the 176 passengers and crew killed when the IRGC shot down their plane after takeoff from Tehran. His guise was a preternaturally consistent and successful hedge fund that returned between approximately 10% and 12% every year, regardless of market conditions. ... using a legitimate brokerage house as a front, Madoff was able to rip off around 40,000 investors who were deceived into thinking they'd accrued $65 billion in profits over a period of more than 40 years." 46) The Central Banks Made the Superrich Even Richer During the Pandemic
Source: Jacobin
by Grace Blakeley

"Nearly 500 people have become billionaires over the course of the pandemic. Stock markets have risen inexorably while unemployment has increased and real wages have stagnated. Somehow property prices, which many believed would finally start to fall as economic activity slowed, have remained stable. On the surface, the ebullience of asset markets makes little sense. Asset prices are supposed to reflect expectations of future returns, whether in the form of dividends, imputed rents, interest, or capital gains. The slowdown in economic activity combined with rising consumer prices should have led investors to adjust their expectations about variables like future profits. The reason this adjustment didn't take place was that central banks didn't let it. They responded to the initial panic in financial markets by creating trillions of dollars worth of new money and using it to purchase assets from the private sector." (01/11/22)

"The public should get to see whether a court that authorized the FBI to track someone's air travels in real time for six months also analyzed whether the surveillance implicated the Fourth Amendment, EFF argued in a brief filed this week. In Forbes Media LLC v. United States, the news organization and its reporter are trying to make public a court order and related records concerning an FBI request to use the All Writs Act to compel a travel data broker to disclose people's movements. Forbes reported on the FBI's use of the All Writs Act to force the company, Sabre, to disclose a suspect's travel data in real time after one of the agency's requests was unsealed. ... 49) Banks and Tech Companies Jockey for Economic Control
Source: The American Prospect
by Terri Friedline

"After Mark Zuckerberg announced the rebranding of Facebook to Meta, reports indicated that the tech giant planned to open brick-and-mortar retail stores to showcase its new products. Meta needs people to try out virtual reality headsets, gloves, and clothing in order to sell them on Zuckerberg's vision for the metaverse. This follows Amazon opening kiosks and retail stores a few years ago and recently announcing plans to open department stores. After forcing its storefront competitors out of business, Amazon is taking advantage of the available real estate. The tech giants' rush to brick-and-mortar stores interested me. For over a decade, I'd been listening to banks justify closing branches to cut costs by contending that people preferred to manage their money via computers and phones. Online and mobile banking were supposed to be easier and more convenient, especially since everyone was presumed to have a high-speed internet connection." (01/12/22)
