1) Ukraine: Overnight Russian attack cuts off power in Kyiv
Source: Deutsche Welle [German state media]
“Russia carried out an aerial attack on Kyiv overnight, severing power and water supplies for thousands of residential buildings in the Ukrainian capital amid a temperature of minus 14 degrees Celsius (7 degrees Fahrenheit), the city’s mayor said Tuesday. The drone and missile strikes hit the east bank of the Dnipro River on the night of Monday to Tuesday, Vitali Klitschko said. The attack by Russian forces has left a total of 5,635 residential buildings in Kyiv without heating, mayor Klitschko said in a statement posted on Telegram. … An energy infrastructure facility also suffered damage in a Russian strike on Ukraine’s Odesa in the south, the region’s Governor, Oleh Kiper, said.” (01/20/26)

2) Senile reality TV star links Greenland tantrums to butthurt over not getting undeserved prize
Source: Reuters
“U.S. President Donald Trump has linked his drive to take control of Greenland to his failure to win the Nobel Peace Prize, saying he no longer thought ‘purely of Peace’ as the row over the island threatened to reignite a trade war with Europe. Trump declined to tell NBC News in an interview whether he would use force to seize Greenland. He did reiterate his threat to hit European nations with tariffs if a deal is not reached. … In a text message on Sunday to Norway’s Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere, Trump said: ‘Considering your Country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 Wars PLUS, I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of Peace, although it will always be predominant, but can now think about what is good and proper for the United States of America.'” (01/20/26)

3) China: Birth rate hits record low as population continues to shrink
Source: BBC News [UK State Media]
“China’s birth rates sunk to a record low in 2025, despite the government rolling out a spate of incentives to boost it, as the country’s population fell for the fourth straight year. Government data on Monday showed that the country’s birth rate fell to 5.63 per 1,000 people – a record low since the Communist Party took power in 1949 – while its death rate rose to 8.04 per 1,000 people, the highest since 1968. Its population fell 3.39 million to reach 1.4 billion by the end of 2025, marking a quicker decline than the previous year. Faced with an ageing population and sluggish economy, Beijing has been trying hard to encourage more young people to marry and have children.” (01/19/25)

4) GA: Libertarians Nominate Oliver for Governor, Make Additional Endorsements
Source: Independent Political Report
“The Libertarian Party of Georgia has nominated Chase Oliver, the party’s 2024 presidential nominee, to run for governor in 2026. … In addition to candidate nominations, the party also conducted its regularly scheduled even-year leadership elections and selected its state delegation for the 2026 Libertarian National Convention, with the state receiving 31 available delegate seats this year. … The party further announced additional statewide nominations, including Allen Buckley for U.S. Senate and Ted Metz for secretary of state. It did not indicate whether it plans to field a candidate for lieutenant governor, which is elected separately from the gubernatorial race. In addition, the party shared its endorsement of Andrew Underwood for the special election in Georgia’s 14th Congressional District, which it publicized on social media several days ahead of the convention.” (01/19/26)

5) France: Lecornu Moves Once Again to Pass a Budget With No Vote
Source: New York Times
“Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu of France announced on Monday that he would push through the country’s long-awaited budget without a vote in the lower house of Parliament, leading opposition lawmakers to announce plans to topple his minority government with a vote of no confidence. Mr. Lecornu’s decision followed more than four months of failed negotiations to reach a consensus over the budget in France’s gridlocked Parliament, where the prime minister’s centrist coalition lacks a majority. To break that deadlock, Mr. Lecornu said that he would use a contentious constitutional tool to force through the budget on Tuesday, a tool that he previously pledged not to use.” (01/19/26)

6) Bulgaria: Radev resigns, clearing path to run for parliament
Source: Politico
“Bulgarian President Rumen Radev said Monday he would resign ahead of snap parliamentary elections, paving the way for him to participate in the upcoming legislative vote. ‘Today is the last time I address you as president,’ Radev said in a televised address to the nation, adding he would formally resign on Tuesday. Although he did not explicitly say he would run in the parliamentary elections, expected to be held in the coming months, his speech strongly hinted he would do so. … Speculation has swirled for weeks that Radev, who was elected president in 2016 and again in 2021, could resign his post to throw his hat in the ring. For many Bulgarians he has been the sole political constant amid a constant churn of governments.” (01/19/26)

7) Syria: Regime, SDF trade accusations over ceasefire violations, IS group prisoners
Source: France 24 [French state media]
“The Syrian government and Kurdish forces traded accusations on Monday over the fate of Islamic State (IS) group prisoners held in Kurdish-run facilities, as Syria’s army deployed in the north and east under a recent deal. Despite the deal, the government and the US-backed, Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) traded blame Monday for fresh attacks the military said killed three soldiers, as well as accusations over the fate of Islamic State (IS) group prisoners in Kurdish-run jails. Following continued clashes, Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa and US President Donald Trump discussed developments in Syria in a phone call on Monday evening, the Syrian presidency said.” (01/19/26)

8) Gold and silver prices hit high after Trump’s latest tariff threat
Source: BBC News [UK state media]
“Gold and silver prices hit record highs but share prices fell on Monday as investors reacted to the threat by US President Donald Trump to impose fresh tariffs on eight European countries opposed to his proposed takeover of Greenland. The price of gold touched $4,689.39 (£3,499) an ounce on Monday, while silver rose to a peak of $94.08 an ounce. Precious metals are seen as safer assets to hold in times of uncertainty, and the prices of both gold and silver have soared over the past year. But stock markets in Europe fell as investors worried over the latest increase in geopolitical tensions.” (01/19/26)

9) EU pols fantasize about banning nudification apps following Grok moral panic
Source: Politico
“The European Commission is exploring a ban on artificial intelligence-powered apps that undress [sic] people online in the wake of abusive content generated through X’s Grok. European Parliament lawmakers last week launched a call — first reported by POLITICO — to ban apps and tools that allow users to generate fake intimate images of individuals without consent under the bloc’s flagship AI law.” [editor’s note: If it is a fake image, it is not an image of a real individual — and in what universe does creating an image of someone violate their rights anyway? 10) Back-scratching bovine leads scientists to reassess intelligence of cows
Source: The Guardian [UK]
“Scientists have been forced to rethink the intelligence of cattle after an Austrian cow named Veronika displayed an impressive – and until now undocumented – knack for tool use. Witgar Wiegele, an organic farmer and baker from a small town in Carinthia near the Italian border, keeps Veronika as a pet and noticed that she occasionally played with sticks and used them to scratch her body. Wiegele said Veronika began playing with pieces of wood years ago, then worked out how to scratch herself with sticks. He said she also recognised family members’ voices and hurried to meet them when they called. … Word soon got around and before long a video clip of the cow’s behaviour reached biologists in Vienna who specialise in animal intelligence. They immediately grasped the importance of the footage. ” (01/19/26)

“Russia has sentenced an American man to five years in prison for illegally transporting weapons, a court said Monday, noting that a rifle was found on his yacht after it docked in the port city of Sochi last June. Russian media said he smuggle[d] the weapons [sic] on his private yacht from July 2024 – June 2025. … According to the court, the man sailed across the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. It cited him as saying he’d met a Russian woman online and decided to visit her and that he didn’t know he was forbidden to keep a weapon on his yacht while it was docked in Russia.” (01/19/26)

12) US Catholic cardinals urge Trump regime to embrace a moral compass in foreign policy
Source: News4Jax
“Three U.S. Catholic cardinals urged the Trump administration on Monday to use a moral compass in pursuing its foreign policy, saying U.S. military action in Venezuela, threats of acquiring Greenland and cuts in foreign aid risk bringing vast suffering instead of promoting peace. In a joint statement, Cardinals Blase Cupich of Chicago, Robert McElroy of Washington and Joseph Tobin of Newark, N.J., warned that without a moral vision, the current debate over Washington’s foreign policy was mired in ‘polarization, partisanship, and narrow economic and social interests.’ … The statement was unusual and marked the second time in as many months that members of the U.S. Catholic hierarchy have asserted their voice against a Trump administration many believe isn’t upholding the basic tenets of human dignity. In November, the entire U.S. conference of Catholic bishops condemned the administration’s mass deportation of migrants and ‘vilification’ of them in the public discourse.” (01/19/26)

Source: ABC News
“Hackers disrupted Iranian state television satellite transmissions to air footage supporting the country’s exiled crown prince and calling on security forces to not ‘point your weapons at the people,’ online video showed early Monday, the latest disruption to follow nationwide protests in the country. … The footage aired Sunday night across multiple channels broadcast by satellite from Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting, the country’s state broadcaster which has a monopoly on television and radio broadcasting. The video aired two clips of exiled Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi, then included footage of security forces and others in what appeared to be Iranian police uniforms. “Don Lemon admitted he was embedded with anti-ICE agitators in Minneapolis and knew of their plans before they burst into a St. Paul church during Sunday services — despite claiming he was there as a journalist and had no advance knowledge of what was going down. Speaking on camera from a snowy parking lot in the Twin Cities, Lemon said he had done some ‘reconnaissance’ with activist groups ahead of the storming of Cities Church. ‘These are resistance protesters, they’re planning an operation we’re going to follow them on. I can’t tell you exactly what they’re doing, but it’s called Operation Pull-Up,’ he said in the livestream. ‘It’s Nekima Armstrong, she’s been doing this since George Floyd, Daunte Wright and others, where they surprise people, catch them off-guard and hold them to account,’ the former CNN host added, dropping the name of a prominent local activist.” (01/19/25)

16) Japan: Takaichi will dissolve parliament, call snap election
Source: Al Jazeera [Qatari state media]
“Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has said she will dissolve parliament on Friday and call a general election to seek voter backing for her spending plans and other policies. The snap election announcement on Monday comes just three months into her tenure as the nation’s first female prime minister. … Calling an early election would allow her to capitalise on strong public support to tighten her grip on the governing Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and shore up her coalition’s fragile majority. The election will test voter appetite for higher spending at a time when the rising cost of living is the public’s top concern.” (01/19/26)

Source: New York Post
“Sen. Bernie Sanders has served on the US Holocaust Memorial Museum’s board for 18 years, but hasn’t attended a single meeting — inspiring a bipartisan push to oust him, The Post has learned. Sanders (I-VT) was appointed in 2007 to the Holocaust Memorial Council, which meets twice a year to oversee the landmark DC museum located about 2 miles from the Capitol. Records supplied to The Post by museum staff show that Sanders, who mainstreamed Democratic socialism with grassroots campaigns for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2016 and 2020, has missed every meeting of the board since his appointment.” (01/19/25)

19) As faith in US fades a year into Trump 2.0, Europe tries to end reliance on American security
Source: SFGate
“‘Intimidation,’ ‘threats’ and ‘blackmail’ are just some of the terms being used by European Union leaders to describe U.S. President Donald Trump’s warning that he will slap new tariffs on nations opposing American control of Greenland. European language has hardened since Trump returned to the White House 12 months ago. Now it’s in reaction to the previously unthinkable idea that NATO’s most powerful member would threaten to seize the territory of another ally. Trade retaliation is likely should Trump make good on his tariff announcement. A year into Trump 2.0, Europe’s faith in the strength of the trans-Atlantic bond is fading fast. For some, it’s already disappeared. The flattery of past months has not worked and tactics are evolving as the Europeans try to manage threats from an old ally just as they confront the threat of an increasingly hostile Russia. Trump’s first term brought NATO to the brink of collapse.” (01/19/25)

“At least 27 members of a leftist guerrilla group in Colombia were killed in clashes with a rival faction in a fight over control of a jungle area in central Colombia, military authorities reported on Sunday. The clashes, which have been the most violent in recent months, occurred in the rural area of the municipality of El Retorno, in the department of Guaviare, 300 km (186 miles) southeast of Bogota, a military source said. The region is strategic for cocaine production and trafficking. 21) Hands off Greenland!
Source: spiked
by Brendan O’Neill
“It’s hard to say who comes out worse in the war of words over Greenland. Is it President Trump, who has flagrantly abandoned his promise to the American people to wean Washington off its vain, destructive meddling in world affairs? Or is it the leaders of Europe, who expect us to buy that they are overnight converts to the cause of sovereignty, despite having spent years ravaging sovereignty across our continent? On one side, a president whose commitment to the ideals of sovereignty turned out to be thin indeed; on the other, leaders who never had any such commitment. … What is at risk of being lost in this global spat is the rights of the Greenlandic people themselves. Most importantly, their unshakeable sovereign right to determine the destiny of their nation as they see fit.” (01/19/26)

“What will be scrupulously avoided in the mainstream press today — Martin Luther King, Jr., Day — will be what King pointed out about the U.S. government — that it is ‘the greatest purveyor of violence in the world today.’ Of course, that statement is as true today as it was in 1967. Source: Ludwig von Mises Institute
by Roman Kireev
“Wherever one observes the transformation of society into one where access to economic opportunity is increasingly contingent upon credentials, one sees the unmistakable hallmark of state interference with the spontaneous order of the market. The moment violence interposes itself between man and his capacity to labor, trade, and create, he no longer lives in a market but under a system of privilege. Protection, in the statist sense, is not about safeguarding the individual; it is about disabling him. Take the case of a man offering surgical services: if he proves himself competent—through outcomes, patient satisfaction, and reputation — that is the only proof the market needs. … Yet, under a statist regime, incompetence is protected by the very credentials meant to eliminate it.” (01/19/26)

“In The Machinery of Freedom, David Friedman floats the idea of large cities decentralizing by creating ‘subcity governments, complete with mini-mayors, [and] controlling areas with populations of no more than 100,000. These governments should take over the provision of police protection, schooling, and many other governmental services.’ He notes that for any big city run by Democrats that are in states run by Republicans, the state government would have incentive to push for this (they’d likely also have the power to do it): some parts of the city would become Republican subcities. “Speaking together at the Israeli-American Council Summit on Saturday, billionaire Zionist megadonors Miriam Adelson and Haim Saban strongly implied that they are engaged in some extremely shady activities to manipulate the US government in advancement of Israeli interests. There’s a guy I follow on Twitter named Chris Menahan who’s always posting clips from Zionist events which might otherwise go unnoticed, frequently turning up jarring admissions from pro-Israel operatives who tend to loosen their lips a bit when addressing an audience of like-minded individuals. I recently cited a clip he spotted featuring former Obama speechwriter Sarah Hurwitz decrying the way social media has allowed the public to view evidence of Israeli atrocities in Gaza. Menahan has spotlighted some very revealing moments from Adelson and Saban, both of whom are dual US-Israeli citizens, and both of whom have provided funding to the Israeli-American Council (IAC).” (01/19/25)

Source: Foreign Policy
by Stephen M Walt
There’s lots of talk about ‘spheres of influence’ these days, largely in response to the latest U.S. National Security Strategy, the Trump regime’s recent actions in Venezuela, and its renewed efforts to take over Greenland. The idea that great powers should exercise unchallenged sway in their own ‘neighborhoods’ is also consistent with U.S. President Donald Trump’s belief that strong leaders of strong countries should run the world and cut deals with each other, without worrying about international law, universal moral principles, or other idealistic notions. Unfortunately, both those who embrace spheres of influence and those who oppose them may not fully grasp their place in world politics. This combination strategy is called ‘hybrid warfare.’ … for more than a quarter century, the US and Israeli militaries and intelligence agencies have laid waste to a region of hundreds of millions of people, blocked economic development, created terror and mass refugee movements, and have nothing to show for it beyond the chaos itself.” (01/19/25)

“They say when you’re born, you come into life with no instruction manual. If we’re lucky, we inherit a good set of parents, who set us up with good habits and sound thinking. We might pursue a religious practice, embrace an education, and learn to think for ourselves. Others might not be so lucky. Anxious and unsure, we turn to other things to make sense of reality: drugs, alcohol, sex or easy money. Without a set of instructions, we rely on what we think is our operating system: the ego. And we protect it with all our might. … I came across Scott Adams accidentally, but it couldn’t have come at a better time for me.” (01/19/25)

32) How to Understand Trump’s Obsession With Greenland
Source: The Atlantic
by Eliot A Cohen
“The Greenland episode, disgraceful and shameful as it is, should be seen in the context of Trump’s other foreign-policy escapades — the capturing of Nicolás Maduro; the bombing of the Iranian nuclear program; the attempt to rebuild and reorient war-shattered Gaza; the on-again, off-again relationships with Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky; the tariff bazookas that get downgraded to squirt guns with China. Erratic as the president sounds, the Trumpian worldview is comprehensible and even, in some respects, predictable. Trump is an ignorant man; unlike many other would-be or actual dictators, he does not read books and has difficulty writing more than a few badly spelled sentences on social media. But he does intuit certain truths, and one must give him credit for those, because he is not stupid and they animate his policy.” (01/19/26)

33) Trump Administration Should Listen to MLK’s Wisdom
Source: OtherWords
by Dedrick Asante-Muhammad
“Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s words from his ‘Beyond Vietnam’ speech still ring true: ‘When machines and computers, profit motives, and property rights are considered more important than people,’ he warned, ‘the giant triplets of racism, extreme materialism, and militarism are incapable of being conquered.’ Those words, delivered in 1967, still summarize today’s political moment. Instead of putting the lives of working Americans first, our leaders in Congress and the White House have prioritized advancing corporate profits and wealth concentration, slashing government programs meant to advance upward mobility, and deploying military forces across the country, increasing distrust and tension. This historic regression corresponds with a recessionary environment for Black America in particular. That’s what my organization, the Joint Center, found in our report, State of the Dream 2026: From Regression to Signs of a Black Recession.” (01/19/25)

34) Trump’s “Great Healthcare Plan” Has Promise but Should Add More Freedom for Americans
Source: Reason
by JD Tuccille
“The Trump administration unveiled the outlines of a health care reform plan last week and, surprisingly for any policy proposal these days, it contains some decent ideas that would empower individuals instead of bureaucrats. Unsurprisingly, though, ‘The Great Healthcare Plan’ doesn’t really undo the bad government interventions and restrictions that limit choice and raise costs. The plan might offer some improvement over what we have, but it should be a lot better. In fact, legislation that would greatly improve the plan has already been presented to Congress.” (01/19/26)

35) As Trump’s Greenland Threat Grows, Europe Begins to Find Its Voice
Source: Washington Monthly
by Tamar Jacoby
“It has taken European leaders nearly a year to recognize what they were up against in Donald Trump. The 47th president has been browbeating and insulting them since he returned to the White House. He has called Europe a ‘decaying’ continent led by ‘weak,’ ‘incompetent’ people who ‘are not doing a good job,’ and his administration has vowed to ‘cultivate resistance’ to continental governments, replacing them with far-right populists. Still, most European leaders have been afraid to push back, wary of alienating the great power that has guaranteed the continent’s security and prosperity for over 80 years. But this dynamic appears to be changing as Trump ratchets up his threats to take over Greenland — the autonomous territory of a loyal NATO member — either ‘the easy way’ or ‘the hard way,’ with the use of force.” (01/19/26)

36) How to Not Be a Fascist
Source: The Dispatch
by Nathan Beacom
“The 1920s were an era in which everything seemed up for grabs. Critics left and right declared the liberal consensus dead. But Aurel Kolnai stood in the center, not falling to the right or to the left of extremism. As certain voices today sing tunes from the hymnals of a century back, it is worth looking at this forgotten philosopher, who fought for human dignity in the face of ideology. The fascists and communists of the 1920s were not all crazed lunatics; many of them were simply conservatives or progressives who took the wrong road, who, step-by-step, were desensitized to their own radicalization. Kolnai shows us how we can retain our balance.” (01/19/26)

38) Is the Threat of Democrats Taking Over Later a Reason to Tread Lightly Now?
Source: Town Hall
by Scott Morefield
“It’s hard to believe we’re a year into the second Trump administration, but here we are. A year of virtually no illegal [sic] immigration, a year of fewer deaths from fentanyl, a year of declining violent crime in major cities like Memphis and Washington D.C., a year of Biden-era inflation finally beginning to come down, a year of putting America first in our dealings with foreign nations, a year of conservative policies making countless American lives better. It hasn’t been perfect, but hell, it’s been pretty damned good and infinitely better than the alternative. But there’s another, more ominous countdown that lies at the back of all our minds. Less than one year from now, another Congress will be seated, one that could be run, at least in the House, by Democrats.” (01/19/25)

“The AI promoters have made grand promises about how AI will change everything and give us all happier, healthier lives. Maybe that will be proven right, but it’s fair to say they have not yet delivered. However, AI workers may have the power to do something very important in the present, not some distant or not so distant future. They can save democracy. 40) No, Heritage, religion doesn’t prevent divorce
Source: Sex and the State
by Cathy Reisenwitz
“Heritage authors claim that the fact that Americans have gotten less religious in recent decades is part of the ‘family crisis’ they’re ostensibly trying to correct. The authors claim, ‘The data are strong that religious people are more likely to get married, marry earlier, divorce less, have more children, and beneficially influence their children’s social development.’ But that, or at least the divorce part, is patently and obviously false. Problem number one with that claim is that the divorce rate has decreased in recent decades. Those same decades, actually, in which religiosity was declining. Hmmmm. The second problem with that claim is that the divorce rate has actually declined among Americans in the top-half of the income and education distribution. Most divorces are among bottom-half folks, who are, if anything, on average more religious than top-halfers.” (01/19/26)

41) Trump was right about price controls, until he embraced them
Source: Washington Post
by Brian Albrecht
“On the 2023 campaign trail, Vice President Kamala Harris’s first major economic speech included proposing a ban on so-called ‘price gouging.’ Jason Furman, a top economist in the Obama administration, said it was ‘not sensible policy.’ As economists across the political spectrum will tell you, capping prices would discourage new companies from ramping up supply, invariably creating shortages. Donald Trump called the plan ‘SOVIET Style price controls.’ He was right, if overly dramatic. Harris’s proposal ended with her campaign. President Trump’s flirtation with controlling markets is just getting started.” (01/19/26)

Source: Law & Liberty
by Brian Pawlowski
“When I sat down to interview Sir Niall Ferguson about his 2006 book The War of the World, I had twenty years’ worth of questions. I discovered the book just after graduating from college and before I joined the Marine Corps. The book did three things for me: it rectified four years’ worth of an undergraduate education woefully devoid of history; it prepared me for the complex interplay of ethnic hatred and economic impoverishment I would encounter as an intelligence officer in the Middle East; and it solidified my view of human nature’s tragic propensity for conflict under even the most abundant of material conditions. I’ve re-read the book multiple times since that first encounter, and twenty years after its initial publication, I continue to gain a deeper appreciation of its historical insight and contemporary relevance.” (01/19/26)

44) Wall Street Strikes Back
Source: The American Prospect
by David Dayen
“For the past year, it felt like we were a long way from the moment in Congress when Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) lamented that big banks ‘own the place’. As the Trump administration took power, a pitched battle emerged between the financial industry and Silicon Valley on a range of issues, and the tech oligarchs, with better connections to MAGA-world and more ability to enrich the Trump organization directly, seemed well positioned to win. The power center seemed to be shifting away from its traditional roots. But Wall Street didn’t become Wall Street by losing its ability to capture the government. A scuttled markup on a bill with major implications for cryptocurrencies shows that reports of the demise of big banks are greatly exaggerated.” (01/19/25)

46) How radical Islamists and the far left united to “fight America everywhere and all the time”
Source: New York Post
by Peter Schweizer
“Ismail Selim Elbarasse, an accountant by training, seemed to be living a quiet life in Annandale, Virginia. But in 2004, when police officers noticed him driving with his wife across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and filming its critical structural elements, they decided to act, then detained him and notified federal agents. He was already a suspect in a scheme to provide funding to Islamist terrorist groups, and now agents were searching through his home for further evidence of his possible involvement. They discovered far more than a terrorism funding scheme. Buried among the stacks of paperwork in his home was a document written in Arabic titled ‘An Explanatory Memorandum on the General Strategic Goal for the Brotherhood in North America’, written by a US-based Islamist leader from the Muslim Brotherhood. The strategic goals memo specifically addressed the ‘Civilization-Jihadist Process’ for using migration as a weapon of subversion.” (01/19/25)

“It’s a phone call no editor wants to receive: a late night jolt from a reporter facing trouble. I have worked with journalists in challenging environments – writing on gang violence and public protests, or from rural, hard-to-reach areas of Latin America and the Caribbean. But it took 15 years before I got my first call from a colleague facing an arrest warrant for his work. Nelson Rauda Zablah, our freelance correspondent in El Salvador, has documented his country’s democratic backsliding since President Nayib Bukele took office in 2019. … When I learned that he was facing the risk of arrest, I felt concerned. 49) Trump’s Economic Belligerence is Driving Canada into China’s Arms
Source: Libertarian Institute
by José Niño
“On January 16, 2026, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney stood beside Chinese President Xi Jinping to announce what he called a landmark agreement that fundamentally restructured trade relations between the two nations. The deal slashed tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles from 100% to 6.1% while China reduced levies on Canadian canola from 84% to approximately 15%. But the numbers themselves tell only part of the story. This agreement represents something far more consequential: the first major fracture in North American solidarity since World War II, driven not by ideological sympathy for Beijing, but by Washington’s increasingly erratic and aggressive behavior on the world stage.” (01/19/26)

“Democrats are bullish about retaking the House of Representatives and making Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) the next Speaker after the midterm elections. Part of that optimism is the cushion of five seats created through further gerrymandering of California’s U.S. House districts. According to one respected Ninth Circuit judge, however, California may have a slight problem: Its new congressional map may be based on racial discrimination. Judge Kenneth Lee this week dissented from a decision upholding the districts, and his detailed dissent could lay the foundation for a serious challenge that goes all the way to the Supreme Court.” (01/19/25)

51) Donroe Doctrine: Catalyst for a US Strategic Contraction in the Indo-Pacific?
Source: Antiwar.com
by Harris Jenner
“The capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro on January 3, 2026, marked a watershed moment in international affairs. The operation’s significance lies not only in its brazen execution but in the geopolitical shockwave it triggered. Framed by President Donald Trump as a ‘law-enforcement’ strike against a ‘drug cartel’ leader, the move has since unleashed a cascade of global threats, alienated key allies, and signaled a profound shift in America’s role – from guarantor of a rules-based order to its primary disruptor. Analysts warn that this aggressive revival of Monroe Doctrine principles is precipitating an international credibility crisis, straining alliances, and may force a broad strategic contraction, including in the critical Indo-Pacific region.” (01/19/26)

“Although Donald Trump is a habitual liar about issues big and small, he is occasionally capable of surprising honesty. His statement to a group of New York Times reporters, quoted above, is one example. It contains two largely frank and correct assertions: first, that American international behavior is constrained by norms (i.e. ‘morality’) rather than law; and second, that the applicable norms are his personal ones, and not necessarily those shared by other nations. We should acknowledge the truth of the first, and be very frightened of the implications of the second.” (01/18/26)

The problem however, aside from the fact that all of this is totally fucking illegal in every court of law on the planet, is that we’ve seen this blockbuster before and it doesn’t end the way it begins.
