1)  UAW launches strike against GM, Ford, and Stellantis
Source: Axios

“The United Auto Workers union launched an unprecedented strike against General Motors, Ford and Stellantis after negotiators failed to reach a last-minute deal on a new contract. The Detroit Three automakers collectively have about 150,000 UAW-represented employees at dozens of factories in the U.S., making popular vehicles like the Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado and Jeep Wrangler. UAW President Shawn Fain said the union would begin a strike at three factories after national contracts expired at 11:59pm Thursday, rather than striking all U.S. operations of the companies …. There has never been a strike against all three automakers at once.” (09/15/23)

2)  Ukraine war: Kyiv regime says it captured eastern village of Andriivka
Source: Al Jazeera [Qatar state media]

“The Ukrainian military says its forces have captured the eastern village of Andriivka in the Donetsk region, claiming Russian troops sustained heavy losses. Kyiv [also] says its drones attacked two Russian patrol ships operating in the Black Sea and destroyed a sophisticated ‘Triumf’ surface-to-air missile defence system in Russian-occupied Crimea.” (09/15/23)

3)  Hunter Biden Indicted on Unconstitutional Gun Charges
Source: Wall Street Journal

“Hunter Biden was indicted Thursday on gun charges related to his purchase of a firearm in 2018, as special counsel David Weiss moved forward with a prosecution set to play out as his father, President Biden, campaigns for re-election. … The three-count indictment alleges that Hunter Biden knowingly lied about his drug use in purchasing a Colt Cobra 38SPL in October 2018 in a written statement to a firearms dealer.” [editor’s note: Government “fill out a form” requirements are unconstitutional in the first place, and the 5th US Circuit Court of Appeals noticed the unconstitutionality of the the “drug users can’t have guns” “law” last month as well – TLK] (09/14/23)

4)  Brazil: Court sentences pro-Bolsonaro rioter to 17 years in jail for storming Senate
Source: France 24 [French state media]

“Brazil’s Supreme Court announced a 17-year jail term Thursday for the first defendant tried and convicted over the storming of the seats of power by supporters of far-right ex-president Jair Bolsonaro. After a trial that began only Wednesday, the court’s 11 justices ruled unanimously to convict 51-year-old Aecio Pereira, with a majority finding he had committed serious crimes including an attempted coup when he stormed the floor of the Senate on January 8, as thousands of Bolsonaro supporters rioted in a bid to oust leftist President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. Overwhelming security, the mob also invaded the presidential palace and the high court itself, smashing windows, throwing furniture into fountains, vandalizing artwork and turning the Senate’s central dais into a slide.” (09/14/23)

5)  NY: Judge temporarily halts fraud trial against disgraced former president, pending appeal
Source: Reuters

“A New York state appeals court judge on Thursday temporarily halted the scheduled Oct. 2 trial in New York Attorney General Letitia James'[s] fraud lawsuit against Donald Trump and his family business, a spokesman for the court said. The order came after the former U.S. president sued Justice Arthur Engoron, the trial judge overseeing the case, accusing him and James of defying a court order that could narrow the lawsuit, according to a report in the Daily Beast. According to the court spokesman, appeals court Justice David Friedman granted an interim stay of the trial, and referred the matter to a five-judge panel, which expects to rule in the last week of September. The trial could still begin on Oct. 2 depending on how the appeals court, known as the First Department, rules.” (09/14/23)

6)  India races to contain outbreak of deadly Nipah virus
Source: Telegraph [UK]

“Schools and offices have been shut and more than 800 people tracked down as India races to contain an outbreak of Nipah, a virus with ‘serious epidemic potential’ and a fatality rate as high as 75 per cent. Authorities in the southern state of Kerala are attempting to curb the pathogen’s spread after two people died from the virus …. It’s the fourth time Nipah has hit the state. In 2018, 21 of the 23 people infected with Nipah in Kerala died, while subsequent outbreaks in 2019 and 2021 killed two people. Now, authorities racing to curb the renewed threat have declared containment zones in at least eight villages, where public offices, schools, government buildings and religious institutions have been temporarily closed. Public transport has also been suspended, while more than 800 potential contacts … have been identified and tested. So far, at least three people, including the nine-year-old child of one of the victims, have been hospitalised after testing positive.” (09/14/23)

7)  US crude oil prices top $90 a barrel for the first time since November 2022
Source: CNBC

“Oil prices jumped on Thursday, with U.S. crude topping $90 a barrel, as expectations of a tighter supply grew. West Texas Intermediate crude (WTI) gained 1.6% to reach a high of $90.04 per barrel, touching its highest level since November 2022. Brent crude was up 1.7%, at $93.47, reaching a 10-month high. WTI crude last traded at $90.02 a barrel. Saudi Arabia and Russia have extended their oil output cuts to the end of 2023, and the move could result in a substantial market deficit for the rest of 2023, the International Energy Agency said on Wednesday.” (09/14/23)

8)  NASA appoints director to lead UFO research, urges science-based approach
Source: Al Jazeera [Qatar state media]

“The United States space agency says the study of UFOs will require a science-based approach and new techniques as NASA appointed a director to lead research on objects that the US government calls unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP). The agency has found no evidence that UAP have extraterrestrial origins, NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said on Thursday after it released a years-long study. In a 33-page report, an independent team commissioned by NASA cautioned that the negative perception surrounding UFOs – short for unidentified flying objects – poses an obstacle to collecting data. But the panel said NASA’s involvement should help reduce the stigma around the issue, and it recommended the agency increase its efforts to gather information on UAP and play a larger role in helping the Pentagon detect them.” (09/14/23)

9)  Libya: Death toll soars to 11,300 in flooding in coastal city of Derna
Source: SFGate

“The death toll in Libya’s coastal city of Derna has soared to 11,300 as search efforts continue following a massive flood fed by the breaching of two dams in heavy rains, the Libyan Red Crescent said Thursday. Marie el-Drese, secretary-general of aid group, told The Associated Press by phone that a further 10,100 are reported missing in the Mediterranean city. Health authorities previously had put the death toll in Derna at 5,500. The flooding swept away entire families on Sunday night and exposed vulnerabilities in the oil-rich country that has been mired in conflict since a 2011 uprising that toppled long-ruling dictator Moammar Gadhafi. Daniel, an unusually strong Mediterranean storm, caused deadly flooding in towns across eastern Libya, but the worst-hit was Derna.” (09/14/23)

10) France: Carrefour puts up “shrinkflation” warning signs
Source: BBC News [UK state media]

“French supermarket Carrefour has put stickers on its shelves this week warning shoppers of ‘shrinkflation’ — where packet contents are getting smaller while prices are not. Lipton Ice Tea, Lindt chocolate and Viennetta ice cream are among the products being named and shamed. Shoppers are being told if bottles are smaller or pack contents lighter. Carrefour said it wanted to put pressure on the firms making the products to keep prices down. ‘Obviously, the aim in stigmatising these products is to be able to tell manufacturers to rethink their pricing policy,’ said Stefen Bompais, director of client communications at Carrefour. Carrefour has identified 26 products that have shrunk, without a price reduction to match, made by food giants including Nestle, PepsiCo and Unilever. Carrefour said Guigoz infant milk formula produced by Nestle had gone from a pack size of 900g to 830g, for example.” (09/14/23)

11) GA: Meadows drops request to pause 2020 election tampering prosecution
Source: The Hill

“Former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows asked Thursday dropped the request to pause his Georgia prosecution. Meadows had previously raised concerns that he could be convicted before it is resolved whether his charges should be moved to federal court. But, a judge ruled earlier Thursday that he will not go to trial next month with two of his co-defendants. Meanwhile, Meadows’s appeal in his effort to move his charges was expedited, paving the way for a decision in a matter of weeks. The former Trump aide said those developments make his request for a pause unnecessary. … Meadows is one of five defendants in the Georgia 2020 election case attempting to move the trial to federal court, which would allow them to try to assert immunity and get their charges dismissed. All pleaded not guilty.” (09/14/23)

12) WI: GOP-led Senate votes to fire state’s nonpartisan top elections official
Source: WISN News

“The Republican-controlled Wisconsin Senate voted Thursday to fire the battleground state’s nonpartisan top elections official ahead of the 2024 presidential election. Democrats say the vote was held improperly and that lawmakers don’t have the authority to oust Wisconsin Elections Commission Administrator Meagan Wolfe. The issue is expected to end in a legal battle. The fight over who will lead the elections agency stems from persisting lies about the 2020 election and creates instability ahead of the 2024 presidential race for the state’s more than 1,800 local clerks who actually run elections. … Nonpartisan Wisconsin Elections Commission Administrator Meagan Wolfe has been the subject of conspiracy theories and threats from election skeptics who falsely claim she was part of a plan to rig the 2020 vote in Wisconsin. GOP leaders have vowed to oust her before the 2024 presidential election.” (09/14/23)

13) HI: Maui wants tourists back; numbers nosediving, airlines now suspending flights
Source: SFGate

“Maui has struggled with overtourism in recent years, but the Hawaiian island now faces issues from a lack of visitors. Maui representatives are calling on travelers to support the island’s recovery following the tragic wildfires in August, but passenger counts have drastically fallen. In response, airlines are suspending service to Maui’s Kahului Airport. Hawaii Gov. Josh Green announced last week that travel restrictions on parts of West Maui are lifting Oct. 8, and the Hawaii Tourism Authority encourages visitors to book trips to the Hawaiian island. ‘We are emphasizing that now is the time for people everywhere to show their support for Maui by booking trips, making restaurant reservations, and frequenting Maui’s retail stores and attractions that support workers and their families,’ the Hawaii Tourism Authority wrote in a statement.” (09/14/23)

14) Federal judge again declares that DACA is illegal
Source: National Public Radio [US state media]

“While a federal judge on Wednesday declared illegal a revised version of a federal policy that prevents the deportation of hundreds of thousands of immigrants brought to the U.S. as children, he declined to order an immediate end to the program and the protections it offers to recipients. U.S. District Judge Andrew Hanen agreed with Texas and eight other states suing to stop the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, program. The judge’s ruling was ultimately expected to be appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court, sending the program’s fate before the high court for a third time.” (09/14/23)

15) Greenland: Cruise ship pulled free after three days stuck in mud
Source: BBC News [UK state media]

“A luxury cruise ship that has been stuck in the mud in Greenland since Monday has finally been pulled free. The Ocean Explorer and its 206 passengers and crew were rescued on Thursday by a Greenland research trawler after it was grounded within the Northeast Greenland National Park. The boat’s owner, SunStone, said there were no injuries to anyone onboard. However, tour operator Aurora Expeditions said a small number of people had come down with Covid-19. The Ocean Explorer became stuck in mud and silt above the Arctic Circle in Alpefjord, 1,400 km (870 miles) northeast of Greenland’s capital Nuuk. A number of attempts were made to free the ship during high tide but they failed. The Danish military’s Joint Arctic Command said an inspection vessel had been due to arrive at the scene on Friday.” (09/14/23)

16) Bulgaria: Regime to drop ban on Ukrainian grain imports
Source: Politico

“Bulgaria has decided that it will no longer block imports of Ukrainian grain after current restrictions expire this Friday, in a step hailed by Kyiv as ‘an example of true solidarity.’ The national parliament voted 124 to 69 Thursday in favor of a resolution to lift a ban on imports of wheat, corn, rapeseed and sunflower seeds from Ukraine imposed earlier this year by the European Commission at the request of Bulgaria, Poland, Hungary, Romania and Slovakia. Prime Minister Nikolai Denkov said on Wednesday that lifting the ban on imports from Ukraine would be desirable because it would lower the price of basic foodstuffs. He said the government would ask the Commission for financial compensation for farmers and to improve infrastructure.” (09/14/23)

17) GOP rep calls for impeachment inquiry into Biden energy secretary Granholm
Source: Fox News

“Republican Rep. Claudia Tenney of New York called for Congress to launch an impeachment inquiry into Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm on Thursday for giving false testimony to Congress about her family’s stock ownership. Tenney called for the investigation during remarks, shared in advance to Fox News Digital, at a House Science and Technology Committee hearing where Granholm testified about her agency’s science and technology priorities. Tenney, who is the first lawmaker to demand an impeachment inquiry into Granholm, cited a series of violations she said Granholm has made since taking office in 2021. ‘Since taking office in January of 2021, Secretary Granholm has violated the Hatch Act multiple times,’ Tenney remarked during the hearing. ‘She owned Proterra stock while her boss, President Biden, repeatedly promoted the company. Her husband owned Ford stock while she personally promoted the companies’ work with official resources.'” (09/14/23)

18) SoftBank’s Arm valued at $54.5 billion in year’s biggest IPO
Source: Reuters

“Chip designer Arm Holdings Plc secured a $54.5 billion valuation in its U.S. initial public offering (IPO) on Wednesday, seven years after its owner SoftBank Group Corp took the company private for $32 billion. The IPO represents a climb-down from the $64 billion valuation at which SoftBank last month acquired the 25% stake it did not already own in the company from the $100 billion Vision Fund it manages. Yet even with this lower valuation, SoftBank fares better than its $40 billion deal to sell Arm to Nvidia Corp, which it abandoned last year amid opposition from antitrust regulators. Arm priced its IPO at $51 per share, at the top of its indicated range, raising $4.87 billion for SoftBank based on 95.5 million shares sold, the company said on Wednesday.” (09/14/23)

19) CT: Benedict Arnold burned a city; centuries later, residents get payback in fiery festival
Source: SFGate

“A month before the British surrender at Yorktown ended major fighting during the American Revolution, the traitor Benedict Arnold led a force of Redcoats on a last raid in his home state of Connecticut, burning most of the small coastal city of New London to the ground. It has been 242 years, but New London still hasn’t forgotten. A crowd of several hundred revelers, some in period costume, marched through the city’s streets Saturday evening chanting, ‘Burn the traitor!’ before watching as officials set Arnold’s effigy ablaze for the Burning of Benedict Arnold Festival, recreating a tradition that was once practiced in many American cities. ‘I like to jokingly refer to it as the original Burning Man festival,’ said organizer Derron Wood, referencing the annual gathering in the Nevada desert.” (09/14/23)

20) Nationwide blackout across Nigeria after power grid collapse
Source: Al Jazeera [Qatar state media]

“‘A total system collapse’ has resulted in widespread power blackouts across Nigeria, Africa’s biggest economy. The outage on Thursday affected all of Nigeria’s 36 states and its capital, Abuja. The grid has collapsed multiple times, and it was not clear when power would be restored. … Power generation fell to zero early on Thursday and had risen to 273 megawatts (MW) by 10:30 GMT, well below the daily average of 4,100MW, data from the Transmission Company of Nigeria showed. … Ιn 2022, Nigeria’s grid collapsed at least four times, which authorities blamed on technical problems. Nigeria has 12,500MW of installed capacity but produces about a quarter of that.” (09/14/23)

21) The War on Drugs is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things — Pseudoephedrine Edition
Source: Garrison Center
by Thomas L Knapp

“Pseudoephedrine is a fantastic decongestant. … But starting in 2006, it disappeared from OTC cold/flu medications and got moved behind pharmacy counters. You could no longer buy it without showing ID, you could only buy limited amounts, and if you bought ‘too much’ (by visiting different pharmacies) or ‘too often,’ the police might just pay you a visit. Pseudoephedrine was, at one time, commonly used in the manufacture of methamphetamine. By making it difficult to get pseudoephedrine,  drug warrior logic ran, the difficulty of cooking meth — and the price of the final product — could be driven up and its availability severely curtailed. … the market cap of Kimberly-Clark (maker of Kleenex brand facial tissues) has more than doubled from then to now. As for methamphetamine, its use has also more than doubled, as have methamphetamine overdose fatalities, since the pseudoephedrine pseudo-ban.” (09/14/23)

“Last week, the governor of New Mexico confronted what she claimed was a health crisis, and her solution was to deny law-abiding folks the right to bear arms. The health crisis she identified was an uptick in the murder rate in the city of Albuquerque. 23) Secret Service Agent Paul Landis and the Magic Bullet
Source: Future of Freedom Foundation
by Jacob G Hornberger

“The official narrative of the assassination, which is set forth by the Warren Commission, is that a lone-nut former communist Marine named Lee Harvey Oswald, who just happened to be at the right place at the right time, just decided, with no apparent motive, that he was going to assassinate President Kennedy. The official narrative holds that this lone-nut former communist Marine fired three shots at the president, two of which hit Kennedy and one of which missed him entirely and instead hit a bystander. It was also determined that Oswald could not have fired more than three shots at the president in the pertinent time span. A fourth shot would necessarily have meant that there was another person also shooting at the president. However, there was a problem.” (09/14/23)

24) The Religion of Masking
Source: Brownstone Institute
by Gwendolyn Kull

“What do burkas, tichels, yarmulkes, hijabs, kapps, fezzes, dukus, and surgical masks all have in common? Religious cultures mandate or strongly encourage these head coverings to comply with dogma. Although most of these are rooted in ethnic and religious traditions of any denomination to reflect humility before G-d and modesty before man, surgical masks have become the morality trend of the Western world for those who fear The Science before they fear any god. … After initially telling the country that masks would not work against this virus, Anthony Fauci fell in step, ordering persons be masked and directing both government and non-government actors alike to hold their fellow citizens accountable for failing to mask. A futile exercise in the name of ‘public health’ given research predating the pandemic had already put to bed the idea that masking could prevent respiratory infections.” (09/14/23)

25) Corporate Media Gets Its Orders on Impeachment
Source: Town Hall
by Derek Hunter

“There is no industry on the planet that loves itself more than Hollywood, but a close second is journalism. It’s fitting since both industries are riddled with some of the worst human beings to ever consume oxygen. But while Hollywood loves itself more, journalism is more damaging to the country. Sure, cultural rot is destructive, but an honest media would report on it and prevent a considerable amount of it. We do not have an honest media. How bad is the media today? It doesn’t take much to see how bad things have gotten when NBC News employs racists like Joy Reid and gives $30 million per year to a crackpot conspiracy theorist like Rachel Maddow. This is NBC News, not the National Enquirer or The Final Call.” (09/14/23)

26) The decline of global inequality, thanks in large part to globalization, should be celebrated by all
Source: Orange County Register
by Veronique de Rugy

“For decades, critics of globalization lamented the chasm that trade and a growing economic interdependence among nations would ostensibly create between the rich and the poor. In the last few decades, however, we’ve witnessed a clear reduction in global inequality quite contrary to the doomsayers’ old predictions. Emerging economies — many of which were once considered backwaters destined to languish — have taken giant leaps forward by joining the global economy. Millions of people have been raised from abject poverty and wealth disparities have narrowed.” (09/14/23)

27) Montana: A Future Generation Shows Up Ahead of Schedule
Source: TomDispatch
by Stan Cox

“The wording in Article IX, Section 1, of Montana’s constitution couldn’t be clearer: ‘The state and each person shall maintain and improve a clean and healthful environment in Montana for present and future generations.’ Accordingly, in April, a district court judge in Yellowstone County voided a permit for a natural-gas-fired power plant under construction there. Over its lifetime, it would have released an estimated 23 million tons of planet-roasting carbon dioxide and that, ruled the judge, was incompatible with a ‘clean and healthful environment’ in Montana or, for that matter, anywhere else. Within a week, the state legislature had voted to reinforce a 2011 law barring the consideration of climate change in policymaking and so allowing the construction of the power plant to resume. But that wasn’t the end of the matter.” (09/14/23)

29) Pet Alligator Bans are Unnecessary and Reckless
Source: Foundation for Economic Education
by Benjamin Seevers

“A small town in western Pennsylvania is considering a ban on alligator ownership. Yes, you read that right: a ban on alligators. This prohibition, like every other action of government, is misguided and will likely lead to negative unintended consequences. The Kiskiminetas Township (Kiski Twp.) board of supervisors is considering the ordinance in light of multiple alligator sightings in the Kiski river. The first one being a 4-foot alligator named ‘Chomper’ in August and now an escaped 2-foot alligator aptly named ‘Neo.’ Chomper and Neo have caused quite the stir despite their small size and docility, and with winter fast approaching, these gators will either be recaptured or freeze to death. With all the hysteria, let’s look at alligator attack statistics.” (09/14/23)

30) Impeaching Biden Is The Right Call, But Don’t Stop With Him
Source: The Federalist
by John Daniel Davidson

“House Speaker Kevin McCarthy made the right decision to launch a formal impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden for what he called ‘serious and credible allegations into President Biden’s conduct,’ which taken together paint a picture of a ‘culture of corruption’ surrounding the president. That’s correct as far as it goes, but it doesn’t go far enough. It won’t be enough simply to impeach Biden if GOP lawmakers don’t also go after the corrupt federal law enforcement agencies that have been hiding evidence against Biden, covering up his corruption, and obstructing investigations into the Biden family business. Indeed, the Justice Department and FBI’s involvement in all this is a much greater threat to America.” (09/13/23)

31) How the “MAGA doom loop” is already threatening Trump’s 2024 chances
Source: Washington Post
by Greg Sargent

“The pattern is becoming clear: Even as voters are mobilizing to protect democracy at the ballot box, Republicans are redoubling their commitment to the former president’s anti-majoritarian mode of politics. And this, in turn, is motivating voters even more. Call it the ‘MAGA doom loop.’ It’s playing out in state after state. Let’s start with Michigan, where Trump’s decisive loss in 2020 led MAGA loyalists to reshape the state Republican Party around devotion to the ‘big lie.’ Then Democrats resoundingly captured full control of the state’s government in the 2022 midterms, in which election-deniers across the country lost races up and down the ticket. … Despite President Biden’s unpopularity, recent Times polling shows his surprising resilience in swing states — and Cohn suggests this partly reflects backlash against MAGA-fied state parties in these places.” (09/14/23)

32) Biden administration continues its anti-democratic “sue-and-settle” masquerade
Source: The Hill
by Benjamin Zycher

“They now make no efforts even to be subtle. ‘They’ are the Biden administration agencies that regulate leasing for energy exploration in federal lands and waters, and leftist environmental groups driven by ideological imperatives. These agencies, deeply politicized, have cut deals with the ideological groups, and nobody was at the table to represent the taxpayers’ interests. The groups themselves, meanwhile, have little interest in actual environmental improvement, but an overwhelming interest in using regulation to make energy more expensive and reduce ordinary people’s living standards. The latest example is the recent sue-and-settle dance between groups led by the Sierra Club, and the National Marine Fisheries Service, in which the feds agreed to remove 6 million acres in the Gulf of Mexico from future oil and gas leasing.” (09/14/23)

Source: Caitlin Johnstone, Rogue Journalist

“The US Air Force is clearing out jungles in the Pacific and replacing them with airfields for its coming war with China, because there exist people on this earth who look at a jungle and think, ‘This should be replaced with an airfield to prepare for a war with China.’ There are people on this earth who say, ‘You know the world would be a much better place if all these trees and exotic insects and birds were replaced with long stretches of concrete lined with nuclear bombers on high alert.’ There are people on this earth who see bulldozing rainforests to make way for war planes as much simpler and easier than just making peace.” [editor’s note: True … and not all of those people are American – TLK] (09/14/23)

34) Freedom Caucus won’t support Ukraine “blank check.” What’s that mean?
Source: Responsible Statecraft
by Blaise Malley

“[T]he Biden administration and Senate Republican leadership have endorsed legislation that ties Ukraine-related assistance with increased disaster relief funding in an emergency spending package. Last Thursday, Punchbowl News reported that McCarthy was considering attaching the disaster relief to a continuing resolution while omitting aid to Ukraine from the short-term spending bill, setting up a potential showdown with the White House and Senate. McCarthy has sent mixed signals about his position on Ukraine aid since saying that there would be no ‘blank check’ for Kyiv prior to ascending to the speakership. By deciding to separate Ukraine aid from the stopgap funding bill and reportedly instead tying it to controversial immigration policies, McCarthy has leaned closer to the right flank of his party on this question. This maneuver may open the door for more debate over funding for Ukraine, though the group is not necessarily in agreement over what precisely ‘no blank check’ means.” (09/14/23)

36) The G20 and the unravelling of American power
Source: spiked
by Frank Furedi

“On the surface, this year’s G20 summit in India has achieved its main mission. Last weekend, the world’s largest and most important economies met in New Delhi, India and managed to agree on a joint statement, without a single dissenting note. ‘We are One Earth, One Family and we share One Future,’ the statement says in its opening sentence. … In reality, there is little such harmony within the G20. What is significant about the cobbled-together declaration is not what it says, but what it leaves out. Despite the best efforts of Western nations, it does not condemn Russia for its invasion of Ukraine. … Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov couldn’t help but gloat, praising it as ‘a step in the right direction’ …. To rub salt into the wound, Lavrov cynically adopted the tone of an anti-colonial activist.” (09/14/23)

37) In Biden’s war on poverty, poverty is winning (especially for kids)
Source: New York Post
By Stephen Moore

“What a cruel irony: The president whose policy obsession from Day 1 in the Oval Office has been not to grow the economy but to reduce income inequality has presided over a near-record surge in the percentage of Americans in poverty. That’s the finding of the Census Bureau’s annual data report released this week. In just a year, from 2021 to 2022, poverty in America rose by almost 5 percentage points, from 7.8% to 12.4%. Today nearly 40 million Americans live in poverty. Worse is the more than doubling of the child poverty rate, from 5.2% to the same 12.4%. So much for no child left behind. Wait. Isn’t this supposed to be a recovery? The COVID pandemic ended more than a year ago, and the government flooded the zone with some $6 trillion in ‘stimulus’ and ‘recovery’ money.” (09/13/23)

38) Iran Interrupted: Mossadegh, the Shah, Khomeini, and the US Press
Source: Antiwar.com
by M Reza Behnam

“Journalism has often been called the first rough draft of history. If at all true, then American press coverage of Iran, which began in earnest 70 years ago, has never gotten past the incomplete, uninformed and inaccurate first draft version. Both Iranians and Americans have been victims of a distorted draft; distortions that have basically remained unchanged since America’s first intervention in Iran in 1953. The interdependence between the U.S. government and what looks like ‘its’ media has been readily apparent. With regard to Iran and the wider Middle East since the 1950s, the mainstream media have long engaged in deference journalism, providing the official U.S. narrative to the American public.” (09/14/23)

39) History Matters
Source: Quillette
by Joel Kotkin

“History has moved to the front line of social conflict, but rarely has it been so poorly understood and sketchily taught. After decades of declining interest, only 13 percent of eighth graders achieve proficiency in the subject today. The New York Times reports that ‘about 40 percent of eighth graders scored ‘below basic’ in U.S. history last year, compared with 34 percent in 2018 and 29 percent in 2014.’ This phenomenon can be seen across the West. The study of and interest in the past, noted the Economist in 2019, has largely disappeared in the UK. Study of the 19th century, meanwhile, seems to be vanishing from European classrooms. … When I show my students a picture of Lenin, barely one-in-ten of them recognize it. Universities should be beacons of dispassionate learning, so it is particularly unfortunate that they have also been increasingly complicit in obliterating much that is valuable to historical instruction and understanding.” (09/14/23)

40) Is Civic Decline an Existential Threat?
Source: Law & Liberty
by John O McGinnis

“The United States is going through one of the most politically divisive times in its history. Karl Rove, the Republican strategist, reminded us last month that sharp and seemingly intractable disagreements are the familiar grist of our national experience. Americans faced them around the election of 1800, in the leadup to the Civil War, in the Gilded Age, around the New Deal, and in the tumultuous 1960s. Yet we resolved all but one of those periods peacefully and emerged from these conflicts on a continued trajectory of ever-greater prosperity and global dominance. Rove tells a hopeful tale, but past results are no guarantee of future performance. Four new factors combine to make our times more perilous than most past flareups of disunion.” (09/14/23)

41) Don’t Hold Your Breath for Trump Ban Under the 14th Amendment
Source: Common Dreams
by Bill Blum

“Is there a legal way to end Donald Trump’s political career, once and for all, without defeating him at the polls? The odds are long, if not almost insurmountable, but a path does exist. An impressive group of constitutional scholars has concluded that Trump can be disqualified from taking back the White House under the 14th Amendment as a result of his role in sparking the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. Initially confined to academic circles and small activist groups on the liberal and progressive left, the idea is going mainstream as the 2024 presidential election approaches with Trump tied in many polls with President Biden. … Although aspects of the disqualification theory are esoteric and understanding the nuances requires some background in post-Civil War history (the 14th Amendment was ratified in 1868), the argument boils down to Section 3’s clear and unambiguous language prohibiting insurrectionists from holding office.” (09/14/23)

by Alasdair Macleod

“As the world descends into a much-heralded recession, the surprise will be that interest rates will continue to rise as economic activity contracts. This is not what the economic establishment expects. This article puts the outlook in the context of classical economic theory, when it was the principles behind the division of labour which went unchallenged. Adopting the theme of Say’s law, this article permits a forecast with a high degree of certainty that far from a recession leading to lower prices, lower interest rates, and therefore investor heaven, it will lead to higher prices, higher interest rates, budget deficits soaring out of control, and liquidation of the dollar by over-exposed foreign holders.” (09/14/23)

44) Fake Sudafed Is Bullshit, Just As You Suspected
Source: Reason
by Jacob Sullum

“Two decades ago, it became clear that Congress was intent on trying to curtail illicit methamphetamine production by restricting access to pseudoephedrine, a meth precursor that was also widely used as a decongestant in cold and allergy remedies such as Sudafed. Pfizer, the manufacturer of Sudafed products, responded by announcing that it would start selling alternatives containing a different active ingredient: phenylephrine. What’s the difference between pseudoephedrine and phenylephrine? … Pseudoephedrine works, while phenylephrine does not. Or so a unanimous panel of experts advised the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Tuesday. … Restrictions on pseudoephedrine did affect the illicit methamphetamine trade, primarily by shifting production from small-scale U.S. operations toward large-scale Mexican traffickers. But by no means did that crimp the supply.” (09/13/23)

Source: Fox News Forum

“The president of the Chicago Teachers Union and executive vice president of the American Federation of Teachers, Stacy Davis Gates, confirmed that she now sends her eldest son to a private school. Local journalists initially reported that MaxPreps, a website devoted to tracking high school sports, listed her son on the soccer team at De La Salle Institute, a private Catholic school boasting a 96 percent college attendance rate among its former students. Admins of a private Facebook group of Chicago Teachers Union members shortly thereafter mentioned that they had become aware of the news three weeks prior and that they ‘dislike the hypocrisy of CTU when they have gone after people who made the same choice.’ It should go without saying, but Mrs. Gates is a fierce opponent of school choice, at least when it comes to other people’s children.” (09/14/23)

“The White House has finally made official what it has been implying for more than two years: Any journalist who reports on President Biden’s misdeeds and corruption is betraying American democracy. The latest call for loyalty oaths comes in response to House Republican leadership launching an impeachment inquiry on Biden family corruption. The White House leaked a draft letter it will send to major media outlets urging them to ‘ramp up their scrutiny’ of House Republicans ‘for opening an impeachment inquiry based on lies.’ The effort to preemptively blunt media criticism of President Biden is being led by Ian Sams, the White House’s official ‘spokesman for oversight and investigations.’ He got that title because ‘Baghdad Bob’ was already taken.” (09/13/23)

47) Why the August Jobs Report Adds Up to a Weak Economy
Source: EconLog
by Vance Ginn

“Americans say the economy is the most important problem facing the country. But major headlines covering the latest jobs report for August do their best to downplay this concern. The New York Times’[s] headline covering the news was, ‘August Jobs Report: U.S. Jobs Growth Forges On,’ but the economic reality is far less cheerful. Sure, the jobs report beat the consensus estimate by economists. But that high-level look at the data fails to address underlying issues keenly felt by many Americans that are apparent with more scrutiny. And these problems won’t be over unless policies out of D.C. substantially and quickly improve.” (09/13/23)

48) Life under “an immense and tutelary power”
Source: Niskanen Center
by Brink Lindsey

“Given the ongoing marginalization of ordinary workers in the labor market, it is reasonable to assume that their dependence on government for income support will deepen over time. Meanwhile, governments’ ability to track their citizens’ movements, purchases, social connections, and even thoughts and emotions is rapidly improving thanks to the internet, smart phones, and developing AI technologies. Put these two things together – a population dependent upon government as never before, and more legible to and manipulable by government than ever before – and the possibilities for abuse are obvious. Here I want to explore another source of vulnerability to despotism, one noted by conservatives from Burke onwards. And that is the risk of runaway centralizing rationalism.” (09/13/23)

“I recently took a reporting trip to Finland, where I rented a car. Driving to my hotel, I was shocked at the incredibly civilized road manners on Finnish highways, thanks in large part to the omnipresent speed cameras and tickets that are assessed as a percentage of one’s income (121,000 euros, in one recent case). To Americans, this might seem like a typical example of nanny-state overreach. For many drivers here, freedom is when you get to drive your giant, powerful, heavy car with total disregard for the law and the safety of other drivers — as I saw on the drive to Newark Airport to catch my flight, during which I was nearly run off the road by a bunch of hooligans swerving through traffic at a hundred miles an hour.” (09/14/23)
