1)  Haiti: Drone attack kills eight children
Source: Times of India [India]

“A drone attack targeting a suspected gang leader killed at least eight children and injured six others in Cité Soleil, a gang-controlled slum of Haiti’s capital, relatives and activists told The Associated Press on Monday. They blamed police for launching the strike on Saturday night. The explosions struck during a gathering reportedly organised by suspected gang leader Albert Steevenson, known as Djouma, who was preparing to celebrate his birthday. Haiti’s National Human Rights Defense Network said Steevenson was distributing gifts to children at the time.” (09/23/25)

2)  In major shift, Trump says Ukraine can win back all territory from Russia
Source: Al Jazeera [Qatari state media]

“United States President Donald Trump says he believes Ukraine, with the support of the European Union and NATO, could win back all of the territory Russia has captured since its invasion more than three years ago, in a dramatic shift in his policy on Ukraine. ‘With time, patience, and the financial support of Europe and, in particular, NATO, the original Borders from where this War started, is very much an option,’ Trump said in a post on his Truth Social platform after his meeting on Tuesday with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. … Trump also dismissed Russia as a ‘paper tiger,’ saying President Vladimir ‘Putin and Russia are in BIG Economic trouble, and this is the time for Ukraine to act.'” (09/23/25)

3)  “Multiple drones” allegedly attack aid flotilla carrying activists and aid headed for Gaza
Source: France 24 [French state media]

“Organisers of a Gaza-bound flotilla carrying aid and pro-Palestinian activists said late Tuesday they heard explosions and saw multiple drones that targeted some of their boats, currently situated off Greece. … The Global Sumud Flotilla set sail from Barcelona earlier this month with the aim of breaking Israel’s blockade of Gaza and delivering aid to the territory. It currently numbers 51 vessels, most of which are situated off the Greek island of Crete. It had already been targeted in two suspected drone attacks in Tunisia, where its boat had been anchored before resuming its voyage towards Gaza.” (09/24/25)

4)  Democrats win special congressional election in Arizona; Republicans hold state senate seat in Georgia
Source: The Hill

“Former Pima County supervisor Adelita Grijalva easily won a special election on Tuesday in Arizona’s 7th Congressional District to fill the seat held by her late father, former Rep. Raúl Grijalva (D-Ariz.). Grijalva beat Republican Daniel Butierez …. Grijalva’s win also means that enough Democrats and Republicans will be able to force a vote on the House floor over the Justice Department’s release of Jeffrey Epstein files. … Meanwhile, in Georgia, Republicans were able to keep a state Senate seat in their hands during a special election runoff. … Democrat Debra Shigley, an attorney and businesswoman, lost to Republican Jason Dickerson, a businessman and political newcomer, to represent a state Senate seat that encompasses parts of Cherokee and Fulton counties.” (09/23/25)

5)  Malawi: Former president takes lead in official vote count
Source: BBC News [UK state media]

“Malawi’s former President Peter Mutharika has taken a comfortable lead in the country’s presidential race, with two-thirds of districts having reported provisional results. The 85-year old has received around 66% of the valid votes counted so far, with his closest rival, the incumbent Lazarus Chakwera, 70, trailing on around 24%. Results declared so far indicate that Mutharika has won in areas known to be Chakwera strongholds, including the capital, Lilongwe, and Nkhotakota. But Chakwera’s camp has not given up, saying that once results are declared from other areas, his vote will increase and he could force a run-off. A candidate needs more than 50% of the vote to be declared the winner, with Malawians eagerly awaiting the final result from last Tuesday’s election. The Malawi Electoral Commission has until the end of Wednesday to announce it.” (09/23/25)

6)  Spain: Prime Minister’s Brother to Stand Trial Accused of Influence Peddling
Source: US News & World Report

“The brother of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez will stand trial accused of influence peddling in a case that the Socialist premier says was fabricated by far-right political opponents. The anti-corruption campaign group Manos Limpias alleges that the Socialist-led Badajoz council tailor-made a job for David Sanchez as coordinator of public music schools in July 2017, when his brother Pedro was the party’s national leader. Prosecutors had wanted the case thrown out for lack of evidence, but a judge, who in Spain can allow a private party to pursue a criminal case, on Tuesday disagreed and sent the case to trial.” (09/23/25)

7)  Amazon to close all 19 British “Fresh” stores
Source: United Press International

“Amazon said Tuesday it is shuttering all Britain-based ‘Fresh’ markets in an effort to realign its global grocery retail strategies with its Whole Foods chain. The global retail giant said its plan to close all 19 of its Amazon Fresh stores in Britain arrived following a ‘thorough evaluation of business operations and the very substantial growth opportunities in online delivery.’ … Company officials added that at least five of the sites will be converted into an Amazon-owned Whole Foods store after it acquired the upscale organic grocery chain in 2017 for over $13 billion.” (09/23/25)

8)  Tylenol maker shares rebound a day after Trump’s attack
Source: Public Broadcasting Service [US state media]

“Shares of Tylenol maker Kenvue bounced back sharply before the opening bell Tuesday, a day after President Donald Trump promoted unproven and in some cases discredited ties between Tylenol, vaccines and autism. ‘Don’t take Tylenol,’ Trump instructed pregnant women around a dozen times during the White House news conference Monday, also urging mothers not to give their infants the drug, known by the generic name acetaminophen in the U.S. or paracetamol in most other countries. Shares of the New Jersey consumer brands company tumbled 7.5% Monday. Shares have regained most of those losses early Tuesday in premarket trading.” (09/23/25)

9)  Shutdown theater: Trump cancels White House meeting with Schumer and Jeffries
Source: Orange County Register

“President Donald Trump has abruptly canceled this week’s planned meeting with congressional Democratic leaders, refusing to negotiate over their demands to shore up health care funds as part of a deal to prevent a potential looming federal government shutdown. In a lengthy Tuesday social media post, Trump rejected the sit-down the White House had agreed to the day before. It would have been the first time the Republican president met with the Democratic Party’s leaders, Sen. Chuck Schumer and Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, since his return to the White House. … Earlier Tuesday, Schumer and Jeffries had issued a joint statement saying that after ‘weeks of Republican stonewalling’ the president had agreed to meet in the Oval Office. But after the Republican president canceled the meeting, the Democratic leaders accused him of throwing a tantrum and running away. Jeffries posted on X that ‘Trump Always Chickens Out.’” (09/23/25)

10) Democrats Launch Probes of Trump Border Czar After He Reportedly Took $50k Bribe
Source: Common Dreams

“Democrats in both the US Senate and House on Tuesday announced they were launching a probe into President Donald Trump’s ‘border czar’ Tom Homan, after MSNBC reported this past weekend that he was caught on camera accepting a $50,000 cash bribe by undercover FBI agents. In a letter sent to Attorney General Pam Bondi and Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, the Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee said they had ‘grave concern’ about the US Department of Justice (DOJ) reportedly shutting down the probe into Homan despite the FBI allegedly possessing video evidence of him accepting $50,000 in cash from agents who were posing as businessmen. ‘These reports allege that Mr. Homan received a significant amount of money … ‘in exchange for facilitating future contracts related to border enforcement” the Democrats wrote.” (09/23/25)

11) Lawyers: Combs has been punished enough, should be freed soon
Source: Yahoo! News

“Lawyers for Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs urged a U.S. judge to sentence the hip-hop mogul to little more time behind bars, after he was convicted of prostitution-related offences but acquitted on more serious sex trafficking and racketeering charges. In a court filing late on Monday night, Combs'[s] lawyers said a sentence of no more than 14 months was sufficient, and there was no need to keep him incarcerated and away from his seven children and 84-year-old mother. Combs, 55, has been jailed at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn since his September 16, 2024 arrest, and would be credited for that time.” (09/23/25)

12) FL: DeSantis eyes land in downtown Miami for Trump presidential library
Source: SFGate

“Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is pushing to establish President Donald Trump’s presidential library in an iconic stretch of downtown Miami. Paving the way for the president’s post-administration historical archives is another way DeSantis and conservative lawmakers are vying to demonstrate their loyalty to Trump, who has shifted the center of his political universe south to his adopted home state of Florida. ‘No state has better delivered the President’s agenda than the Free State of Florida, and we would be honored to house his presidential library here in his home state,’ DeSantis said in a statement announcing the plan Tuesday. The proposal sets aside a 2.63-acre (1.06-hectare) parcel of land adjacent to the Freedom Tower, a historic building that rises alongside the glitzy condos facing palm tree-lined Biscayne Bay.” (09/23/25)

13) ICC charges Duterte with crimes against humanity
Source: Al Jazeera [Qatari state media]

“Former President of the Philippines Rodrigo Duterte has been charged with three counts of crimes against humanity by the International Criminal Court (ICC), which alleges that he played a role in the murders of at least 76 people during his so-called ‘war on drugs.’ The charges against the 80-year-old, who has been held in a detention facility in the Netherlands since March, are set out in a document that was published by the ICC on Monday. They relate in part to the anti-drug crackdown Duterte led when he was president, which resulted in the deaths of thousands of alleged narcotics dealers and users.” (09/23/25)

14) NY: Secret Service dismantles “telecommunications threat” near UN General Assembly
Source: Fox News

“The U.S. Secret Service said Tuesday that it has ‘dismantled a network of electronic devices located throughout the New York tristate area that were used to conduct multiple telecommunications-related threats directed towards senior U.S. government officials.’ The devices were concentrated within 35 miles of the ongoing United Nations General Assembly meeting in New York. ‘This network had the potential to disable cellphone towers and essentially shut down the cellular network in New York City,’ Matt McCool, the special agent in charge of the Secret Service’s New York field office, said in a video released Tuesday. The Secret Service said it found ‘more than 300 co-located SIM servers and 100,000 SIM cards across multiple sites…. In addition to carrying out anonymous telephonic threats, these devices could be used to conduct a wide range of telecommunications attacks.'” (09/23/25)

15) Libertarian National Committee censures New Hampshire affiliate
Source: Independent Political Report

“The Libertarian National Committee has voted to censure the Libertarian Party of New Hampshire and invite it to voluntarily disaffiliate from the national organization, following months of internal friction and public criticism over the affiliate’s online messaging. … The measure was introduced September 12 by LNC At-Large Representative Sam Bohler, who cited what he described as antisemitic and homophobic content shared by the affiliate. The motion referenced a 9/11-themed image depicting a Hasidic Jewish man piloting a plane toward the Twin Towers with the caption ‘We did it,’ as well as the use of slurs in other posts. Bohler argued that the affiliate’s use of social media undermines the Libertarian Party’s commitment to individual dignity and damages its national reputation.” (09/22/25)

16) Southern China closes schools and cancels flights as Super Typhoon Ragasa nears
Source: SFGate

“Southern Chinese cities scaled back many aspects of daily life on Tuesday with school and business closures and flight cancellations as they braced for one of the strongest typhoons in years that has already killed three people and displaced thousands in the Philippines. Residents living in flood-prone areas put sandbags and barriers at their doors, while others taped windows and glass doors to brace for strong winds. Many people stockpiled food and other supplies, and some market vendors reported their goods were selling out fast. Some Hong Kongers gathered on a promenade to watch waves as high as 2 to 3 meters (6.5 to 9.8 feet) splash onto the pedestrian area before the weather worsens. Authorities rescued three people, including a child, from the sea and police said they were watching the waves.” (09/23/25)

17) African coup regimes say they are pulling out of International Criminal Court
Source: ABC News

“Ruling military juntas in Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger say the three countries are withdrawing from the International Criminal Court, accusing the global tribunal of what they say is selective justice. The pullout was not unexpected in the wake of the coups that brought the juntas to power in the three western African countries. The ICC, based in The Hague, is the world’s permanent global tribunal for war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide. Since the coups, the three countries’ military leaders abandoned longtime partners, including the West and the West Africa regional bloc. They have established new alliances, mainly with Russia, whose President Vladimir Putin faces an arrest warrant by the ICC over Russia’s war in Ukraine.” [editor’s note: If there’s such a thing as a “legitimate” government, can its “illegitimate” replacement “legitimately” withdraw itself from the “legitimate” one’s treaties? – TLK] (09/23/25)

18) Senile reality TV star attacks UN regimes for insufficient immigration authoritarianism, unsatisfactory escalator
Source: New York Post

“[T]he president is in NYC where he gave a historic address at the United Nations General Assembly and is set to meet with world leaders including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The commander-in-chief, 79, delivered a blistering attack on the UN straight to world leaders’ faces this morning in a speech that lasted nearly an hour, well over each speaker’s 15-minute allotted time. Trump slammed UN nations’ ‘open borders.’ telling heads of state ‘Your countries are going to hell’ because of them. He slammed the body’s ’empty words’ and questioned its entire existence. ‘All I got from the United Nations was an escalator on the way up that stopped in the middle! If the first lady wasn’t in great shape, she would’ve fallen,’ Trump later complained during his address — after griping about his teleprompter failing as well.” (09/23/25)

19) Scientists discover new dinosaur from Argentina with a crocodile bone in its mouth
Source: SFGate

“Scientists have discovered a new dinosaur from Argentina with powerful claws, feasting on an ancient crocodile bone. The new find was possibly 23 feet (7 meters) long and hailed from a mysterious group of dinosaurs called megaraptorans. They prowled across what’s now South America, Australia and parts of Asia, splitting off into different species over millions of years. Megaraptorans were known for their stretched-out skulls and ‘huge and very powerful claw,s, said Lucio Ibiricu with the Patagonian Institute of Geology and Paleontology, who was part of the discovery team. But it’s not yet clear how these creatures hunted and where they fall on the evolutionary timeline — mainly because the fossils recovered so far were incomplete.” (09/23/25)

21) Abolish the FCC
Source: The American Conservative
by Ted Galen Carpenter

“President Donald Trump has displayed an exceptional ability to combine the separate civil liberties abuses of his predecessors into a more comprehensive toxic brew. The latest example involved the ABC television network’s decision to oust late-night host Jimmy Kimmel for insensitive, partisan remarks about the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. If ABC’s management had made that decision without pressure from the government, there would be no valid First Amendment issue involved. However, comments that Trump and Attorney General Pam Bondi made pointed to government meddling or outright coercion. … Restoring the First Amendment should begin with a concerted campaign to abolish the FCC, thereby preventing any White House occupant from using that agency as a partisan or ideological weapon.” (09/23/25)

22) Trump, RFK Jr. May Be Right About Acetaminophen, But Why The Rush?
Source: Garrison Center
by Thomas L Knapp

“Maybe there’s really no  causal link to autism/ADHD; maybe there is. But with any number of pain relief options out there, does it really make sense to continue using a drug we already knew was bad for us? While a senile reality TV star and publicity-seeking nepo baby might not be the best spokesmen for an anti-acetaminophen advocacy campaign, those of us who care about our own health and the health of our loved ones should probably just take the ‘I learned something today’ win here. As to reasons for the sudden, and obviously fast-tracked, rollout of the Trump/RFK campaign, we can plausibly infer that it’s of a piece with other recent publicity plays, from Trump’s murder campaign in the Caribbean, to the making of a podcaster into a partisan martyr, to the ‘cancellation’ campaigns against anti-Trump media.” (09/23/25)

23) Trump’s Latest Tariff Defense Asserts Uncheckable Executive Power
Source: Reason
by Damon Root

“Trump asserts that his trade policy is permitted by the terms of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), which the president reads as granting him virtually unlimited power to impose tariffs. But if the Supreme Court concludes that IEEPA’s text — which does not mention tariffs — fails to provide clear authorization from Congress, then Trump’s tariffs must be ruled illegal under the major questions doctrine. The Trump administration seems worried about that outcome. So worried, in fact, that its brief attempts to rewrite the major questions doctrine in a way that shields the president from ever facing any of its negative judicial consequences.” (09/23/25)

“The story of the Great Depression is well known. It started with the stock market crash; Herbert Hoover dithered as things got worse; then Roosevelt came in with his New Deal and solid Keynesian principles and saved the day. 25) Is Trump Taking Treaties Back to the Middle Ages?
Source: Foreign Policy
by Gregory H Fox

“U.S. President Donald Trump has concentrated government power in his hands since the start of his second term. Much has been written about his one-man rule by executive order, his appointments based on personal loyalty, and his outrage at judges who defy him. But the American public should be equally alarmed by Trump’s personalization of international treaties. … Today, we are witnessing the death of this entire U.S. treaty system. Trump has not been shy about doing deals with foreign nations, but he has not submitted any treaties to the Senate or Congress for approval. Instead, he has acted as if treaties were solely the prerogative of the executive branch, personally taking center stage in concluding agreements, like the one with Ukraine on critical mineral resources.” (09/23/25)

26) We say “Amen” to Erika Kirk’s message of free speech and forgiveness
Source: New York Post

“President Donald Trump should heed the bold, brave message of faith, hope and forgiveness Erika Kirk delivered Sunday. It was one of the best American speeches of this century — and points the nation to a better way, one it desperately needs. As Erika said, the answer to hate is not hate. And for Trump it risks dragging his administration and the whole country down. Justified anger at the poisonous left and the toxic media — and at all the deceptions and abuses of power involved in trying to take Trump down these last 10 years — doesn’t mean fighting fire with fire should be the only answer. In particular, clamping down on free speech is not the way.” (09/22/25)

27) Freedom of speech “essential to the pursuit of truth”
Source: Hawaii Report
by Keli‘i Akina

“Freedom of speech is essential to the pursuit of truth in the marketplace of ideas. It is also essential if we are to hold our governments accountable. It allows citizens, journalists and thinkers to challenge power, question authority and shine light into darkness. It is one of freedom’s greatest guardians. Throughout history, free speech has been a powerful force for good. Without it, we would not have overcome many of our deepest social injustices, nor achieved the cultural, intellectual and technological advancements that have shaped the modern world. The antithesis of free speech and civic discourse is violence.” (09/23/25)

29) After the Kirk killing, mercy as mending
Source: Christian Science Monitor
by staff

“Americans who feel angry or hurt by President Donald Trump’s words and actions – such as his unsupported accusation that the “radical left” influenced Charlie Kirk’s killer – might find some calming wisdom in the words of Mr. Kirk’s widow. At a memorial service Sunday for the slain conservative activist, Erika Kirk said she forgives ‘that young man’ charged with the Sept. 10 assassination. Such quick mercy after a crime so calculated and callous was not only for Mrs. Kirk’s peace of mind. Like others who cherish forgiveness as the essence of universal love, she explained the religious origins of her profound choice: ‘I forgive him because it was what Christ did,’ the mother of two young children stated. ‘The answer to hate is not hate. The answer we know from the gospel is love and always love. Love for our enemies and love for those who persecute us.'” (09/22/25)

30) Government AI regulation could censor protected speech online
Source: Foundation for Individual Rights and Education
by Edan Kauer

“Elliston Berry was just 14 years old when a male classmate at Aledo High in North Texas used AI to create fake nudes of her based on images he took from her social media. He then did the same to seven other girls at the school and shared the images on Snapchat. Now, two years later, Berry and her classmates are the inspiration for Senator Ted Cruz’s Take It Down Act (TIDA), a recently enacted law which gives social media platforms 48 hours to remove ‘revenge porn’ once reported. The bill considers any non-consensual intimate imagery (NCII), including AI deepfakes, to fall under this category. But despite the law’s noble intentions, its dangerously vague wording is a threat to free speech.” (09/23/25)

31) Trump sets trap for Democrats on crime, and they’re walking right into it
Source: Fox News
by Liz Peek

“Do Democrats really want to repeat their humiliating defeat of 1988? They might if they continue putting criminals ahead of citizens. President Donald Trump will make sure of it. President Trump, whose political instincts are excellent (witness his turns serving fries at McDonald’s or driving a garbage truck during last year’s campaign), is pushing clueless Democrats into a trap. By sending the National Guard into Washington, D.C., and cleaning up our nation’s capital, he has shown what is possible. By resisting his offers to help their cities, Democratic officials in Illinois, California, New York and other blue states are telling their residents they care more about criminals than the people they represent. They will pay for that. In the presidential election of 1988, Republican George H.W. Bush crushed his Democratic rival, winning 426 Electoral College votes to Michael Dukakis’[s] 111 — one of the worst drubbings of all time.” (09/23/25)

32) Easy versus tighter monetary stance
Source: Cobden Centre
by Dr. Frank Shostak

“By popular thinking the economy is perceived to be like a space ship, which occasionally slips from the path of stable economic growth and stable prices. Following this way of thinking when economic activity slows down and falls below the path of stable economic growth and prices, it should be the duty of the central bank to give the economy a push, which will place it back onto the stable growth path. … We suggest that a tight monetary stance cannot undo the effects of the previous easy stance.” (09/23/25)

33) Preparing for Scarcity: Drinking Deep While We Can
Source: TomDispatch
by Frida Berrigan

“The truck wheel’s inner tube was right in front of me, no longer half-submerged in the pond’s late summer muck. After so many hot weeks without rain, the water had dried up and the garbage was completely exposed. My feet barely sank into the mud as I pulled the inner tube free. It was heavier than I expected, full of leftover pond water. I tipped it to drain the water, so I could carry it away. But that water just kept dribbling out. It was dark and smelled of rotten leaves. As I shook the tube, I tried to keep the muck from getting on my shoes. There must have been three or four gallons of it. Contorted in an uncomfortable crouch and harassed by bugs as the water glugged slowly out of the little hole, I felt impatient.” (09/23/25)

“Before Donald Trump’s state visit to the United Kingdom, there was no shortage of speculation that something might go wrong. Perhaps demonstrators would cause disruption. Or there would be some diplomatic row. The dismissal of the British Ambassador to Washington, Lord Mandelson, just a few days earlier was hardly an encouraging portent. As it turned out, the visit was a triumph that reasserted the special relationship.” (09/23/25)

36) Wall Street vs. Silicon Valley: The Defining Battle for the Next Financial Era
Source: Bitcoin.com
by Artem Gordadze

“For more than a decade, while institutions, governments, and fintech giants have pursued scale, control, and revenue monopolisation, DeFi projects have championed open-source innovation and community-driven models. At its core, this has always been a competition for the same prize: customers. However, while people are taking sides, the future is not about one camp defeating the other; it’s about the emergence of a new financial order. The next generation of winners will be those who can create hybrid solutions, combining the trust, distribution, and regulatory strength of TradFi with the speed, transparency, and innovation of DeFi.” (09/23/25)

37) Progressive Leftist Rot Goes All the Way Down to Local Politics
Source: Town Hall
by Derek Hunter

“The assassination of Charlie Kirk is one of those moments in history that really exposes the divide in the country: on one side are the people who do not support the idea of murdering individuals for their political beliefs and on the other side are Democrats. While there is some crossover, the basics of that statement hold true. So, when someone is murdered for their beliefs it can be a confusing time for everyone, but especially kids. That’s where a friend of mine comes in. I asked my podcast listeners for their thoughts on the Kirk killing and my friend’s stood out. His was framed in the school system in Anne Arundel County, Maryland — one which doesn’t seem to care about parental concerns (if they come from conservatives), but were all in on a junkie who died of an overdose … because ‘social justice’ or something.” (09/23/25)

39) Permissionless Journalism
Source: The Dispatch
by Kevin D Williamson

“The recent all-out assault on free speech by the Trump administration and its allies has some of my friends in the business grumbling about the fact that the United States has no national ‘shield law’ giving journalists certain kinds of legal protections …. The most recent attempt to pass such a law failed in the Senate last year, not because Senate Republicans thought through the issue carefully but because Donald Trump demanded it be killed. Trump probably does not understand the law, but he knows he hates journalists. … a federal shield law (there are many state-level versions) was a bad idea before Donald Trump and it is a bad idea now — not because of the proposed shield or shields per se, but because it raises the question of who is to be protected by such a law and implies a government power to make that decision.” (09/23/25)

40) Republicans Should Be Apoplectic Over What Trump and Kennedy Are Doing to Tylenol
Source: Washington Monthly
by Bill Scher

“I’m old enough to remember when Republicans were so wedded to the free market that they believed the federal government shouldn’t criticize industries, let alone individual companies, for unsafe products and practices. When Democrats made arguments for environmental or health regulations based on rigorous science, Republicans went to enormous lengths to challenge the science and resist government action. But now we’re living in the upside-down. Republicans apparently believe that the President of the United States and the Secretary of Health and Human Services should use the power of their offices to kneecap individual companies based on science that’s half-baked at best. Republicans have filed for divorce with the free market, in favor of a threesome with authoritarianism and quackery.” [editor’s note: It’s always weird to see a Democrat criticizing Republicans for acting like Democrats instead of like the fake past version of Republicans in said Democrat’s imagination – TLK] (09/23/25)

41) What Kind of Times Are We Living In?
Source: Common Dreams
by Peter F Crowley

“Censorship is flooding our society. However, like soma in Brave New World, many Americans are pacified by what we see online. TikTok videos, watching other gamers, and videos of the cute things that wild animals do on Instagram. If it’s the mainstream news, we’ll see a car crash, a house fire, the weather, traffic reports. If it’s political, it is too often framed as though it’s the same old, same old, similar to the mid-1990s welfare reform debate or the discussion around the Iraq War in 2002-2003, rather than focusing on Americans’ and American residents’ constitutional freedoms, human rights, and freedom of speech at stake. Some Americans are in a state of shock, hoping that in three and a half years things will get better. Others are in a state of denial, pretending that things aren’t actually on a blitzkrieg train to fascism.” (09/23/25)

But freedom’s tops, so I get especially jazzed when people stand up to demand it. And concerned when those in power attempt to take it away. The very potent public backlash against the idea that ABC was muscled by the Trump administration into suspending Kimmel’s show is why it has returned. That’s a healthy sign of our political culture.” (09/23/25)

43) What Does Venezuela Have To Do?
Source: Antiwar.com

“‘The Venezuelan government’s collaboration in the fight against drug trafficking was among the best in South America,’ according to former Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime Pino Arlacchi. And now, on top of that, Maduro has ordered the more than doubling of Venezuelan forces to monitor drug trafficking. … Despite Venezuela’s stellar past record and the current enhancing of its efforts, the U.S. is still threatening military action if Maduro doesn’t enhance his administration’s efforts against drug growing and trafficking. What makes the question of what Venezuela is supposed to do more difficult is that there is nothing Venezuela can do. The U.S. is demanding that Venezuela make a course correction to correct a problem that does not exist.” (09/23/25)

This administration’s bold action — opening the door to the first FDA-recognized treatment for autism, confronting environmental and medical risk factors, and investing in groundbreaking research — follows the science, restores trust and will deliver hope to millions of families. The nearly five-fold increased prevalence of autism in recent decades demands a rapid response — with prompt research and by acting on information as it becomes available.” (09/23/25)

46) Is Recognition of Palestine Motivated by Hostility to Israel?
Source: Gideon’s Substack
by Noah Millman

“More recent waves of recognition of Palestine have generally been interpreted by Israel as unwanted interference in negotiations that it says should be left to the parties; more recently, they have been interpreted as signs of fundamental hostility to Israel’s existence, aiming at deepening its isolation and ultimately destroying it. But it’s worth pointing out that despite the recognition extended to Palestine, very few countries have actually severed relations with Israel. … The fact that the effort is self-interested on these countries’ part doesn’t mean it is insincere, and it actually argues against the view that it is motivated by atavistic hostility to Israel or the Jewish people. It may reflect a lack of appreciation of the stakes as Israelis see them — but by the same token, Israelis themselves may be blind to the stakes others have, most obviously but not exclusively the Palestinians.” (09/22/25)

47) The Social Benefits of Iconoclasts

“An iconoclast is someone who loudly and boldly takes stances far outside of conventional (expressed) public opinion. Iconoclasts can attract a lot of criticism. On the other hand, in situations where there is widespread preference falsification, the only way to break out of that is for at least some people to be willing to noticeably make their private beliefs publicly known. Each person who does so makes it just a little bit easier for the next person to do so as well. The first people to do so may face heavy criticism — even attempts at cancelation — but iconoclasts often revel in the controversy rather than being deterred by it. There are upsides and downsides to this.” (09/22/25)

49) Ted Cruz Attempts to Exempt Big Tech From the Law
Source: The American Prospect
by Dylan Gyauch-Lewis

“Until the assassination of archconservative pundit and activist Charlie Kirk that afternoon, September 10 was shaping up to be all about artificial intelligence and the federal government’s increasingly maximalist approach to its development and deployment. That morning, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), chair of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, introduced legislation that could allow the White House to unilaterally exempt AI companies from nearly any federal regulation. The bill, called the SANDBOX Act (standing for ‘Strengthening Artificial Intelligence Normalization and Diffusion by Oversight and eXperimentation Act ‘ ….That program would allow companies working on artificial-intelligence products to request ‘a waiver or modification of one or more covered provisions’ for an initial period of two years, renewable up to four times for a total of one decade of exemption from federal regulations.” (09/23/25)

50) “Deficit Day” Is No Cause to Celebrate as Spending Exceeds Taxes
Source: Cato Institute
by Antony Davies & James Harrigan

“The federal government will spend $7 trillion in 2025. That’s roughly $19 billion per day, or around $50 million in the time it takes to read this article. On the other side of the ledger, the government will collect $5.2 trillion in taxes. Careful readers will already see the problem. That $5.2 trillion dribbles in over the course of the year as households and businesses pay their taxes. But imagine if the IRS received the full $5.2 trillion on Jan. 1 and the government spent at a constant $19 billion per day. At some point in the year, the money would run out. That day is Deficit Day, and this year, it fell on Sept. 21. Every day from today until the end of the year, Washington adds another $19 billion to a debt that already tips the scales at $37 trillion.” (09/22/25)
