0) One Cheer of Three Down (Year-End Fundraiser Update)
“Way too many ‘zero-dollar days’ this year.”
That was the message accompanying long-time supporter JR’s $96.34 donation yesterday. Why $96.34? Because that’s how far short we were of the 1/3 mark in our year-end fundraiser. Thanks to JR, IH and JF, got us past the mark to (as of 5:30am Thursday morning) $922.34!
And yes, JR’s right. We’ve had (or at least it FEELS like we’ve had) too many days when not a single reader of the freedom movement’s daily newspaper has thrown in to support our work here via:
https://news.rationalreview.com/support-rrndWe put this publication out every day and have been doing so (under different brandings) for 34 years, so it’s a little depressing when a day goes by during our only annual fundraiser without at least one of our 5,000 or so readers deciding it’s worth something, anything, even a little, to them.
We’re not talking about a lot of money here: Thanks to reader GL’s “matching funds” pledge, we only have to raise $2,750.50 from all of our other readers to hit our $5,501 goal (and once we do, I stop talking about money entirely for the rest of 2025 and mostly until October of 2026).
That’s about 55 cents per reader. I hesitate to say “NO donation is too small” because PayPal fees eat up a lot at the low end, but even a couple of dollars makes a real difference.
https://news.rationalreview.com/support-rrndOur next “mini-goal” is to raise another $77.66 by tomorrow morning, which will put us at the $1,000 mark. Will you help us get there? That URL again:
https://news.rationalreview.com/support-rrndWhile you’re there, I hope you’ll consider becoming a “subscribing contributor” who supports us regularly for as little as $1 per month. JR, IH, and JF are all “subscribing contributors” and we appreciate them very much (yes, JR sent us that contribution yesterday ON TOP OF his recurring donations).
Thanks for all you do, and in advance for doing a little more. Have a great day!
Yours in liberty,
Tom Knapp

1) Scenes Of Ruin Emerge In Jamaica, Cuba As Hurricane Melissa Pummels Caribbean
Source: The Weather Channel
“Hurricane Melissa turned its focus toward Bermuda after leaving a trail of destruction across Jamaica and Cuba, and inundating the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos. Residents in low-lying areas of Turks and Caicos were ordered to shelter in place overnight Wednesday. In Jamaica, recovery efforts were just beginning. 77% of the island remained without power, though commercial flights were expected to resume in some areas by Thursday. … Footage from this morning in the historic city of Santiago de Cuba, founded more than 500 years ago, shows collapsed homes, roofs torn open, and flooded streets. More than 700,000 residents were evacuated from Cuba’s eastern region. Authorities have yet to report any casualties from the storm.” (10/30/25)

2) IL: Congressional candidate, others indicted for anti-gang activities
Source: The Guardian [US]
“Kat Abughazaleh, a progressive candidate for Congress, has been indicted on federal charges related to her participation in protests outside an ICE processing facility near Chicago in September. The indictment, filed last week, alleges that the 26-year old Palestinian American candidate and five other individuals ‘physically hindered and impeded’ a federal agent who was ‘forced to drive at an extremely slow rate of speed to avoid injuring any of the conspirators.’ Abughazaleh, who is running for Illinois’s ninth congressional district to replace the outgoing Democrat Jan Schakowsky, was charged with conspiracy to forcibly impede or injure a federal agent, and assaulting or impeding the agent while they were performing official duties.” (10/29/25)

3) Brazil: Corpses line Rio street, pushing death toll from police raids to 132
Source: Reuters
“The deadliest police operation in Brazil’s history killed at least 132 people, officials said on Wednesday, after Rio de Janeiro residents lined a street with dozens of corpses collected overnight, a week ahead of global climate events in the city. The tally from the Rio public defender’s office was more than double the death toll released on Tuesday, when state authorities reported at least 64 dead, including four police officers. The raids were targeting a major drug gang, the state government said. Rio Governor Claudio Castro said the initial tally had only counted bodies processed in the public morgue. Penha residents who went looking for lost relatives had collected many of the corpses from a forested area behind their neighborhood, according to people at the scene, where more than 70 of the bodies were lined up in the middle of the street.” (10/29/25)

4) Fed cuts rates for second time as shutdown stalls key data
Source: The Hill
“The Federal Reserve cut interest rates for the second consecutive month Wednesday as questions swirl about the true strength of the U.S. economy. The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC), the panel of Fed officials in charge of monetary policy, reduced its baseline interest rate to a range of 3.75 to 4 percent, cutting it by 0.25 percentage points. Officials voted 10 to 2 in favor of the rate cut, with Fed board member Stephen Miran instead supporting a larger 0.5 percentage point cut, and Kansas City Federal Reserve President Jeffrey Schmid supporting no move at all.” (10/29/25)

5) US Senate passes resolutions against Trump tax hikes
Source: ABC News
“The Senate on Wednesday narrowly passed a resolution that would repeal President Donald Trump’s tariffs on [American buyers of goods from] Canada after passing a similar resolution Tuesday that would repeal tariffs on [American buyers of goods from] Brazil. Republicans Sens. Lisa Murkowski, Susan Collins, Mitch McConnell and co-sponsor Rand Paul voted with all Senate Democrats to pass the measure by a 50-46 margin. It needed only a simple majority to pass. Five Republicans voted with Democrats on Tuesday to pass the Brazil tariff resolution. That resolution would terminate the emergency declaration that Trump made in July and, as a result, lift the tariffs that were imposed on [American buyers of] Brazilian goods as a result.” (10/29/25)

6) South Korea: Regime gifts Trump with crown
Source: Axios
“President Trump was gifted a ceremonial crown Wednesday by South Korean President Lee Jae Myung. South Korea’s gift of a monarchical symbol comes the same month that more than 7 million Americans rallied in No Kings protests. The crown is a replica of one researchers believe was worn by an ancient Korean ruler, multiple outlets reported. Trump also became the first U.S. president to receive a gold medal representing the Grand Order of Mugunghwa, South Korea’s highest civil honor. … Trump has accepted lavish gifts from foreign nations and American executives, though the the Foreign Emoluments Clause of the U.S. Constitution bars officeholders from accepting gifts ‘from any king, prince or foreign state.'” (10/29/25)

7) UK: Farage’s bid to bring forward legislation to leave ECHR blocked by MPs
Source: Independent [UK]
“Nigel Farage’s bid to bring forward legislation for the UK to leave the European Convention on Human Rights has been blocked by MPs. Members could be heard heckling as the motion was debated in the House of Commons, with one branding the Reform UK leader ‘Putin’s patsy.’ During his speech, Mr Farage told a group of MPs sat behind him, ‘children be quiet,’ following continuous interventions. The Reform leader forced a vote on withdrawing from the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) through a 10-minute rule motion on Wednesday. The vote was not on the legislation itself, but on the principle of bringing forward a Bill. MPs voted against the motion 96 to 154, majority 58. Mr Farage told the Commons that leaving the ECHR was the ‘unfinished business’ of Brexit.” (10/29/25)

8) Disney Closes Deal Merging Hulu Live TV With Fubo
Source: Variety
“Disney and Fubo announced the closing of their deal merging Hulu + Live TV operations with Fubo, with Disney owning a 70% stake in the new company. The newly combined Fubo and Hulu + Live TV business creates the second largest virtual pay-TV provider in the U.S., with nearly 6 million subscribers in North America. That trails only Google’s YouTube TV, estimated to have more than 10 million paying subs, which is currently involved in a carriage-renewal fight with Disney. … Disney and Fubo received clearance from the Justice Department’s Antitrust Division to complete the transaction, according to two sources familiar with the matter.” (10/29/25)

9) “CBS Saturday Morning” to get radical revamp; co-hosts are out
Source: New York Post
“‘CBS Saturday Morning’ is poised to become the first major casualty of the sweeping cuts hitting CBS News on Wednesday, The Post has learned. The 28-year-old show, which airs nationwide on Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. ET, has been slated for a radical revamp by CBS News editor in chief Bari Weiss and the network’s president Tom Cibrowski, sources close to the situation said. Co-anchors Michelle Miller, Dana Jacobson and the show’s executive producer Brian Applegate have been informed and are on their way out, sources close to the situation said. It couldn’t immediately be learned when the final episode will air, including whether the show will broadcast this coming Saturday. It was also unclear whether CBS will seek to revive the broadcast in another form.” (10/29/25)

Authorities did not specify when the strikes on Badiraguato, Guzman’s birthplace and the historical stronghold of drug trafficking in Mexico, took place. Displaced residents said attacks in the region began in September. Dozens of residents were forced to leave the area, Governor Ruben Rocha Moya told a news conference. … The attack in Guzman’s hometown comes just days after a drone attack hit the prosecutor’s office in the Mexican border city of Tijuana.” (10/29/25)

Hamdi, who is Muslim, was detained Sunday by ICE officers at San Francisco International Airport, according to federal officials. 13) In potential breakthrough for commercial air travel, NASA’s “quiet” supersonic jet completes first flight
Source: Fox News
“A new ‘quiet’ supersonic X-59 jet designed to revolutionize air travel successfully completed its first test flight, Lockheed Martin announced this week. The sleek, needle-point aircraft built for NASA is designed to break the sound barrier while reducing the sonic boom to a ‘thump’, according to the aerospace contractor. The aircraft aims to overcome one of the major hurdles to supersonic travel, which is noise restrictions over land. The plane took off from Palmdale, Calif., at Skunk Works’ facility at U.S. Air Force Plant 42, accompanied by a NASA chase plane. It landed safely about an hour later at NASA’s Armstrong Flight Research Center. The plane’s unique shape is designed to greatly lower the volume of the sonic boom typically produced when a plane breaks the sound barrier.” (10/29/25)

“Rodrigo Duterte, the former president of the Philippines, has appealed last week’s decision by the International Criminal Court to continue its case against him and is seeking his release, court documents showed on Wednesday. Last week, ICC judges ruled that the court had jurisdiction over Duterte’s case despite his team’s contention that the court did not open a full-fledged investigation into alleged crimes in the Philippines until after the country had withdrawn from the ICC in 2019. Duterte, president from 2016 to 2022, was arrested and taken to The Hague in March on an arrest warrant that linked him to murders committed during his war on drugs in the Philippines. During that campaign, thousands of alleged narcotics peddlers and users were killed. Duterte and his lawyers maintain his arrest was unlawful.” (10/29/25)

“Two purported Russian mobsters were each sentenced to 25 years behind bars Wednesday for hiring a hitman to kill Iranian American journalist Masih Alinejad at her Brooklyn home three years ago on behalf of the Iranian government. ‘I crossed an ocean to come to America and have a normal life and I don’t have a normal life,’ Alinejad said just before Judge Colleen McMahon announced the sentences in Manhattan federal court for Rafat Amirov, 46, and Polad Omarov, 41. ‘I’m a brave woman. I’m a strong woman. They couldn’t break me. But they brought fear to my life. These criminals turned my life upside down,’ Alinejad said as she spoke at a lectern near the men, who sat in prison uniforms with their hands folded before them. McMahon said the men had committed ‘a terrible, terrible crime.’ Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael D. Lockard had urged McMahon to dispense 55-year prison terms to the men.” (10/29/25)

Source: ABC 7 Eyewitness News
“A federal judge disqualified acting U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli in Southern California from several cases after concluding Tuesday that the Trump appointee has stayed in the temporary job longer than allowed by law. U.S. District Judge J. Michael Seabright disqualified Essayli from supervising the criminal prosecutions in three cases, siding with defense lawyers. Essayli has been unlawfully serving as acting U.S. attorney for the Central District of California since July 29, Seabright wrote. But he may continue to serve as a First Assistant United States Attorney, Seabright ruled, effectively leaving him as the office’s top prosecutor. … The decision represents another setback to the Trump administration’s effort to extend handpicked acting U.S. attorneys beyond the 120-day limit set by federal law.” (10/28/25)

Source: Politico
“You can only walk 6 kilometers per hour if you want to follow the law in Slovakia. The Slovak parliament Tuesday afternoon adopted an amendment to the traffic law that sets a maximum permitted speed on sidewalks in urban areas at 6 kph. The limit applies to pedestrians, cyclists, skaters, and scooter and e-scooter riders — all of who are allowed on sidewalks — and aims to avoid frequent collisions. … The average walking speed typically ranges between 4 to 5 kph. However, the British Heart Foundation reports that a pace of 6.4 kilometers per hour is considered moderate for someone with excellent fitness. The opposition criticized the change, and even the Slovak Interior Ministry said it would be more appropriate to prohibit e-scooters from the sidewalks than impose a general speed limit.” (10/29/25)

Source: SFGate
“The conservative city council in Huntington Beach, Orange County’s deep-red MAGA stronghold, has been unrelenting in its yearslong battle over so-called pornographic children’s books at its public libraries. Now, after seemingly endless legal battles, the council is gearing up for another round in court. In a crusade to keep certain books out of the public library’s children’s section, the conservative-majority political body voted Tuesday, Oct. 21, to appeal a judge’s court order from earlier in the month that found the city had wrongfully banned books at its public libraries, the Los Angeles Times reported. The Huntington Beach City Council, whose members refer to themselves as the ‘MAGA-nificent Seven’, pushed back after an Orange County Superior Court mandated that the city drop its 2023 order to censor children’s books. Instead, Huntington Beach has to eliminate its newly created youth-restricted zone and return the books to the regular children’s section.” (10/29/25)

Monsters don’t always come wrapped in the trappings of horror or myth. Most often, monsters in the real world look like ordinary people. They walk among us. They smile for the cameras. They promise protection and prosperity even as they feed on fear and obedience. All is not as it seems. We are living in two worlds. There’s the world we’re shown — the bright, propaganda-driven illusion manufactured by the government and its corporate sponsors — and the world we actually inhabit, where economic inequality widens, real agendas are buried beneath layers of Orwellian doublespeak, and ‘freedom’ is rationed out in controlled, legalistic doses by militarized police and federal agents. … monsters with human faces walk among us. “Last week, President Trump ordered an aircraft carrier strike group into the waters off Venezuela. The deployment of the USS Gerald R. Ford, the Navy’s most advanced aircraft carrier, and all the warships that accompany it is the strongest sign yet that the Trump administration intends to escalate its operations in the region. It comes after US forces struck at least ten boats the administration claims were smuggling drugs from Venezuela, and after the president authorized covert CIA operations against the Venezuelan government run by President Nicolas Maduro. Publicly, this mobilization of US forces is solely an effort to disrupt the flow of deadly drugs into the United States. … However, this excuse completely falls apart with even the slightest look into how American users are getting their fentanyl.” (10/29/25)

“Trump’s ballroom has already served the public good. It has triggered some people who need triggering. Now, however, because of the ballroom, and the East Wing, the blasé are suddenly aghast. … It is especially amusing to hear progressives, the principal creators of the watery Caesarism of today’s presidency, sorrowfully describing Trump’s ballroom as discordant with the White House’s proper modesty. “A trio of elections in Africa this month were not expected to be overly open or fair. Longtime leaders and ruling parties retained power after voting in Cameroon and Ivory Coast. And it’s likely to be the same when Tanzanians go to the polls Oct. 29. Yet, earlier elections this year – in Ghana, Malawi, and Seychelles – did see smooth transfers of power. And, despite political stasis, the continent is showing consistent economic growth combined with stronger, more transparent financial governance. Forty-four African countries (including Ivory Coast and Tanzania) are expected to surpass the global average growth rate this year, thanks to new discoveries of oil and gas as well as modest gains in agricultural productivity and manufacturing. And just last week, the global Financial Action Task Force (FATF) removed four countries – including two of the continent’s largest economies – from its ‘grey list.'” (10/28/25)

27) Where’s the Emergency?
Source: The Dispatch
by Jonah Goldberg
“[Julius Caesar] wasn’t the first Roman dictator, just the most infamous one. In the Roman Republic, the title and authority of ‘dictator’ was occasionally granted by the Senate to an individual to deal with a big problem or emergency. Usually, the term would last no more than six months — shorter if the crisis was dealt with — because the Romans detested anything that smacked of monarchy. When Caesar crossed the Rubicon (where we get that phrase) his enemies in the Senate fled. So, the remaining senators named him dictator for 11 days to hold fresh elections. His second dictatorship was set for 10 years, and then finally he was named dictator for life. … Trump is not a dictator, but as Benjamin Franklin understood, republics fail not so much because would-be Caesars seize power. They fail because cowards give it to them — under the false pretense of an emergency.” (10/29/25)

“Political pressure and high levels of uncertainty are a big concern for businesses today. And such concerns can have a ripple effect on the communities and nonprofits that rely on and benefit from partnerships with the private sector. I was recently reminded of this at my local Giant grocery store which featured a special promotion: if a customer spent $15 on select grocery items, Giant would contribute $10 to local food banks. This promotion was co-sponsored by Feeding America, America’s ‘largest hunger-relief organization.'” (10/29/25)

“It’s just news story after news story about the US and its allies terrorizing the world today. The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have been filming themselves committing horrific massacres in Sudan over the last couple of days, reportedly murdering some two thousand civilians. You can see the bloodstains on the ground in satellite images. As we discussed the other day, the RSF and its atrocities are backed by the UAE, a close partner of the United States. Meanwhile Israel has committed another wave of massacres of its own throughout the Gaza Strip, reportedly killing 104 people in a single day, including 46 children. This is as many Palestinians as would typically be killed on any given day in Gaza prior to the so-called ‘ceasefire.'” (10/29/25)

30) Connecting the Dots between the WHO and UN Security Council Reform
Source: Brownstone Institute

“he Indian-origin parable of the six blind men describing an elephant spread to many cultures and civilisations centuries ago and is therefore a widely-known story. Upon first encountering an elephant, the men who had heard about but not actually come across it, each person projects from the particular part of the animal he explored by touch to offer a generalised description of the whole beast. … The point of the parable is that specialists can similarly see in their area of expertise in granular detail yet be blind to the big picture. In previous articles, I have highlighted parallels between the 2003 Iraq war, nuclear disarmament, climate catastrophism, and Covid interventions (lockdowns, mask recommendations, and vaccine mandates). All three are conveniently brought together in the book Our Enemy, the Government: How Covid Enabled the Expansion and Abuse of State Power (2023).” (10/29/25)

“President Donald Trump’s demolition of the East Wing of the White House isn’t just an architectural abomination; it’s symbolic of the wrecking ball he’s taken to the Constitution. Driven by his unbounded megalomania and supported by the high-tech oligarchy and a Cabinet of fawning sycophants, the 79-year-old president has precipitated a constitutional crisis and set the nation on the road to authoritarianism and democratic collapse. … Trump has also openly teased about running for a third term in contravention of the 22nd Amendment; secured three indictments and counting against his political critics; launched a lethal air campaign against alleged drug-smuggling boats in the Caribbean and the eastern Pacific without congressional authorization and in arguable violation of international law; and demanded that the Justice Department hand him $230 million to compensate for the federal investigations into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 election and for prosecuting him in the Mar-a-Lago documents case.” (10/29/25)

“A lot of language that never used to be part of America’s political discourse has come into vogue since January 20. Like ‘Rubicon,’ that ancient Roman river that’s come to symbolize a divide between democracy and dictatorship, and has been crossed more times lately than the Hudson on a busy Monday-morning rush hour. Or this one: ‘Reichstag Fire.’ On February 27, 1933, less than a month after Adolf Hitler was named Germany’s chancellor, an alleged arson fire destroyed much of the nation’s legislative building in Berlin, the Reichstag. A Dutch Communist was blamed for the blaze, which sparked the ruling Nazis to implement the Reichstag Fire Decree, expelling leftist lawmakers and sending political foes to newly created concentration camps.” (10/29/25)

Source: Common Dreams
by Dr. Ghassan Shahrour
“Each October, the United Nations observes Disarmament Week—a global call to reduce weapons, promote peace, and raise awareness about the human cost of armed conflict. Held annually from October 24 to 30, this observance invites governments, civil society, and individuals to reflect on the roots of violence and the pathways to peace. In 2025, as the world confronts escalating conflicts and humanitarian crises, the objectives of Disarmament Week resonate with renewed urgency. This essay argues that true disarmament must dismantle not only weapons but the global systems that perpetuate impunity and selective justice. It invites reflection on how Palestinianism reframes peace — not as the absence of conflict, but as the restoration of dignity.” (10/29/25)

Source: Antiwar.com
by David Vine
“Amid some extremely cautious optimism for peace following a tenuous and incomplete ceasefire in Gaza, any hope for Gaza’s future depends significantly on a little-noticed point in President Donald Trump’s original 20-point peace plan. The plan’s twelfth point says, ‘No one will be forced to leave Gaza, and those who wish to leave will be free to do so and free to return.’ The plan goes even further, saying, ‘We will encourage people to stay and offer them the opportunity to build a better Gaza.’ Although there are reasons to doubt many elements of the Trump ‘peace plan’ – which neither side has agreed to in full – the assertion that no one will be forced to leave Gaza represents a major reversal: prior Israeli and U.S. government policy clearly aimed to force some or all Palestinians from the Strip.” (10/29/25)

39) Trump, an Avowed Second Amendment Champion, Defends a Gun Ban With “No Historical Justification”
Source: Reason
by Jacob Sullum
“A few weeks after taking office, President Donald Trump called the Second Amendment ‘an indispensable safeguard of security and liberty,’ declaring that ‘the right to keep and bear arms must not be infringed.’ But in a case that the Supreme Court recently agreed to hear, the Trump administration is urging the justices to uphold one of the federal government’s most constitutionally dubious restrictions on that right. Since 1968, Congress has prohibited gun possession by illegal drug users, a provision that affects millions of peaceful Americans who pose no plausible threat to public safety. That gun ban is illogical, unjust, and inconsistent with ‘this Nation’s historical tradition of firearm regulation,’ meaning it fails the constitutional test that the Supreme Court established in 2022.” (10/29/25)

“For years, Americans have been told that ‘compassion’ for the homeless meant writing ever-larger checks – more money, more programs and far less accountability. Now, at last, we have some answers for why homelessness has exploded even amid a tripling of public spending. A groundbreaking investigation, ‘Infiltrated’ (backed by more than 50 pages of documentation from the Capital Research Center in cooperation with Discovery Institute), pulls back the curtain on a vast system of corruption. It reveals how billions in taxpayer funds intended to lift people out of homelessness have instead bankrolled radical activism and anti-American political agendas, betraying both the taxpayers who fund it and the homeless they were meant to help. Despite unprecedented resources, homelessness in the United States now stands at its highest level in U.S. history.” (10/29/25)

Instead, Oct. 26, 1970 marks when President Nixon signed the Bank Secrecy Act and set the foundation for a new regime of financial surveillance. “Has this ever worked? Kind of famously, yes — at least for a while. In the 1930s, as fascist movements stomped across Europe, popular fronts emerged to block the spread. In France and Spain, leftists, centrists and anti-fascist liberals joined forces to beat back the far right, sometimes literally. In the United States, the Communist Party helped bring broad, anti-fascist politics into public life, forming coalitions among Black writers, labor organizers and progressive cultural workers. As historian Bill Mullen writes in Popular Fronts, the period saw ‘an extraordinary rapprochement’ between Black and white members of the U.S. Left — not just in protest, but in culture, art and publishing. ” (10/29/25)
