1)  Russia: Gunmen kill at least 15 in attacks on synagogue and churches
Source: The Guardian [UK]

“Gunmen opened fire in two cities in Russia’s north Caucasus region of Dagestan, targeting a synagogue, two Orthodox churches and a police post and killing at least 15 police officers and a priest, Russian media reported. … In the city of Derbent, gunmen attacked a synagogue, home to a Jewish community in the predominantly Muslim region. Russia’s state media Tass said the attackers also shot at two nearby Orthodox churches, killing a police officer and a priest. … In a separate shooting which occurred simultaneously, a group opened fire on police in Makhachkala, the capital of Dagestan, located about 75 miles north along the Caspian Sea coast. 2)  Report: US prosecutors want criminal charges for Boeing
Source: The Hill

“Justice Department prosecutors are recommending that Boeing face criminal charges, claiming it violated a settlement related to two fatal crashes, Reuters reported Sunday. The department faces a July 7 deadline to determine whether to charge the airline giant. The 2021 settlement agreement came after a pair of fatal crashes related to defects in the Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft, killing nearly 350 people in 2018 and 2019. The agreement shielded the company from criminal liability for fraud in exchange for a promised overhaul of its compliance system, in addition to a $2.5 billion fine. The department found Boeing in violation of the agreement last month, which the company has contested. Boeing and the DOJ are in negotiations over next steps, and a final decision over charges has not been reached, according to Reuters.” (06/23/24)

Source: Al Jazeera [Qatari state media]

“At least four people have been killed in an Israeli air attack near an aid centre that was the main headquarters of the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) in the Gaza Strip. The air strike on Sunday hit the main gate of the organisation’s compound in Gaza City in the north of the enclave, injuring multiple Palestinians. The facility is used to distribute the little humanitarian aid that gets into Gaza. Hundreds of people displaced by the Israeli military’s ground invasion of Gaza were sheltering inside the facility at the time of the incident.” (06/23/24)

4)  Record flooding inundates northwest Iowa, prompts evacuations, isolates one city
Source: NBC News

“Historic flooding struck parts of Iowa over the weekend, damaging nearly 2,000 properties and prompting evacuations and disaster declarations. … Flooding on Saturday and overnight into Sunday was the result not just of direct rain — some areas measured 15 inches in two days, Reynolds said — but also of overflowing rivers’ flooding dry communities downstream, National Weather Service meteorologist Roger Vachalek said. … An official tally for weather-related deaths over the weekend was not yet available. … The rain and swelling waterways contrasted with persistent heat in much of the rest of the country on the first weekend of summer. Heat alerts covered an estimated 95 million people in the U.S. on Sunday, with near-record high temperatures — 5 to 15 degrees above normal — expected to remain at least through the early part of the week.” (06/23/24)

5)  Ukraine war: Regimes trade attacks with multiple dead
Source: ABC News

“Russian authorities said four people died and over 100 were wounded in Ukrainian drone and missile attacks on Sunday, while the second day of Russia’s aerial bombing of Kharkiv in northeastern Ukraine killed at least one person. Five people — including two children — were killed by falling debris when five Ukrainian missiles were shot down in Sevastopol …. Russian state news agency RIA Novosti, citing the Health Ministry, said 124 people were wounded. … One person was killed and three injured in Russia’s Belgorod region …. A fresh attack on Kharkiv killed at least one person and wounded 11 on Sunday, according to local officials. Source: Reuters

“Retail technology and software provider CDK Global has begun work to restore systems used by over 15,000 retail locations across North America, the company said in a statement on Sunday, adding that it expects the process to take ‘several days.’ … Bloomberg News had previously reported that a group of hackers claiming responsibility for a cyberattack on CDK’s software systems has demanded millions of dollars in ransom to put an end to the hack. 7)  Iran: Court overturns death sentence of anti-regime rapper
Source: Washington Post

“Iran’s Supreme Court overturned the death sentence handed down to a rapper who made music that criticized the regime and backed nationwide protests sparked by a woman’s [murder by] Iran’s morality police, his lawyer said. Toomaj Salehi’s death sentence was ‘overturned and based on an appeal decision of the 39th branch of the Supreme Court, the case will be referred to [another] branch for consideration,’ Salehi’s lawyer Amir Raesian wrote Saturday on X. Iran’s Supreme Court has now ordered a retrial, Raesian said, adding that the judges decided that Salehi’s previous prison sentence of six years and three months — on charges of ‘spreading corruption on the Earth’ — violated ‘Iran’s multiple-offenses rules, and was in excess of the legal punishment.'” (06/23/24)

8) “Wild Thang" lives up to his name, finally crowned “World’s Ugliest Dog” after years of falling short
Source: Fox News

“Friday was an auspicious day for an 8-year-old Pekingese with a bad right leg and plenty of personality. ‘Wild Thang,’ the Pekingese pooch with a rogue tongue, was crowned the ‘World’s Ugliest Dog’ at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Petaluma, California. Born in Los Angeles but living with his adopted family in Oregon, Wild Thang has competed for five years in the annual contest, with Friday’s big win his first after finishing second three times. … Wild Thang narrowly survived distemper while with a foster family in Southern California as a puppy and has a waddling right leg and improperly growing teeth. 11) North Macedonia: Parliament Approves a New Center-Right Government After May’s Election
Source: US News & World Report

“North Macedonia’s center-right leader secured parliamentary approval to lead a new coalition government in a vote late Sunday. Hristijan Mickoski, 46, faces significant challenges in his four-year term in office — above all to advance the small Balkan NATO member’s lengthy efforts to join the 27-nation European Union. At the same time, his VMRO-DPMNE party’s nationalist bent is antagonizing neighboring members of the affluent bloc, in stark contrast to the previous center-left government it defeated i n May’s national elections. A total 77 lawmakers in the 120-seat house voted in favor of the new government, and 22 voted against. The remaining 21 lawmakers were absent during the ballot.” (06/23/24)

The seven were sent to mainland France, he added, ‘due to the sensitivity of the procedure and in order to allow the investigations to continue in a calm manner, free of any pressure.’ Among the seven detainees was Christian Tein, head of the pro-independence group CCAT, who was charged Saturday over the recent violence in which nine people died, including two police.” (06/23/24)

It has threatened to target oil installations and called on the Chinese companies that run the pipeline to end their support for the military regime. “Effective September 29, the US Commerce Department has banned American sales of, and software update downloads for, Kaspersky Lab’s globally popular cybersecurity/anti-virus software … ‘because Russia.’ The order ‘will prohibit Kaspersky Lab and all of its affiliates, subsidiaries and parent company from providing cyber security and anti-virus software anywhere in the United States,’ Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo said in a press briefing. ‘Russia has shown it has the capacity and even more than that, the intent, to exploit Russian companies like Kaspersky to collect and weaponize the personal information of Americans.’ Responding to the order, Kaspersky denied that the ban would actually affect its ability to operate in the US and claimed the decision was based on ‘geopolitical climate and theoretical concerns’ rather than any actually established risks.” (06/23/24)

20) SCOTUS upholds unconstitutional gun law
Source: The Hill

“The Supreme Court in an 8-1 decision Friday upheld a federal law that disarms people under domestic violence restraining orders, ruling it complies with the court’s recent expansion [sic] of Second Amendment rights. Under that two-year-old precedent, which found a right to bear arms outside the home for the first time, the court has prescribed a new test requiring gun control measures fit within the nation’s historical tradition of firearm regulation. Chief Justice John Roberts, writing for the majority, noted a tradition of disarming individuals found to pose a credible threat to the physical safety of another, rejecting a defendant’s challenge to the gun possession ban.” (06/21/24)

21) What Free Market in Health Care?
Source: Free Association
by Sheldon Richman

“Contrary to a popular article of faith, America has no free market in health care — far from it. Consider this: the largest lobby in Washington, D.C., is — wait for it — the health care and health insurance industries. Last year, they spent 5.8 times the amount the ‘defense’ contractors spent on lobbying: $800 million versus less than $200 million. This may have many explanations, but the fact remains: a free market in health care would not see massive lobbying. Based on what Congress and regulatory agencies do, we can be sure that the health care and insurance industries are not by and large lobbying for less government. If so, they are doing a rotten job.” (06/21/24)

Source: Palm Beach Examiner
by Karl Dickey

“The Silk Road was an online black market, launched in 2011 by Ross Ulbricht under the pseudonym ‘Dread Pirate Roberts.’ Silk Road offered users the ability to buy and sell goods and services anonymously using Bitcoin. … as the government always does, when they see a truly private free market in action, without them getting their cut, the FBI went on a manhunt for this Dead Pirate Roberts character and Ulbricht was ultimately arrested in 2013 in San Francisco, charging him with money laundering, computer hacking, and conspiracy to traffic narcotics without a license to do so. Ulbricht was ultimately sentenced to two life sentences without the possibility of parole. … Now, in the 2024 election season underway, campaign promises to pardon Ross Ulbricht are flying around with all but Joe Biden promising to free ross from federal prison.” (06/21/24)

23) Rights beyond government oversight
Source: Eastern New Mexico News
by Kent McManigal

“I often say politics makes people stupid. I’ve tried to think of a nicer way to say this, but there isn’t one. I don’t tie this to any specific political party, but observe it applies to all of them, through the effect they have on everyone who identifies with them. I’m embarrassed for people who pretend Joe Biden is mentally or physically capable and for those who imagine Donald Trump is a friend to gun owners. No one has a right to govern another person. There’s no way to manufacture such a right out of thin air, with documents, or out of historical justifications dreamed up by fans of political governance. Calling it ‘a republic’ or ‘democracy’ changes nothing. Believing such a thing only proves my point about what politics does to the human mind.” (06/23/24)

Source: Garrison Center
by Thomas L Knapp

“The only way for taxes to go down is for spending to go down … and the politicians bragging about ‘tax cut’ proposals clearly have no intention of reducing their spending. The ‘national debt’  stands at not quite $35 trillion, with another $2 trillion to be added this year. Every dollar of debt and deficit represents taxes the government has promised to take out of your hide, and your descendants’ hides, in perpetuity, with interest. It’s just another tax,  with payment partially deferred.” (06/22/24)

25) What any economist will tell you (but no real estate agent will)
Source: Washington Post
by Megan McArdle

“It is fashionable to say that the United States’ best days are behind us, that we are too divided and dysfunctional to fix things that are broken, or to do anything worthwhile. I think America is still great, capable of both advancing onward to greater things and rectifying our past mistakes. As it happens, this is the perfect political moment to fix one mistake in particular: ending the mortgage interest tax deduction once and for all. Maybe that’s not at the top of your list of America’s problems. And it’s nowhere near the worst sins our nation has committed. But the mortgage interest tax deduction is terrible policy, as any wonk who is not working for a real estate lobby will tell you (volubly, at great length, and very possibly punctuated with explosive profanity).” (06/21/24)

Source: Christian Science Monitor
by staff

“On June 23, women who are trained to invent, build, and fix today’s technology will celebrate International Women in Engineering Day. Started in Britain a decade ago, the celebration – and that is the main point – has since gone global. And for good reason. The number of women researchers in all technical fields worldwide is approaching parity with men. A new study by a Dutch scientific academic publishing company, Elsevier, found that women were 41% of researchers in 2022 compared with 28% in 2001. In a few fields such as chemistry, as well as in a few countries such as Portugal, women have already reached parity. And the most experienced female researchers have their scholarly work cited in publications more often than male researchers do.” (06/21/24)

27) SCOTUS takes on congressional malaise and executive branch overreach
Source: Orange County Register
by Veronique de Rugy

“The United States Constitution vests all legislative powers in Congress. Yet, over the past century, we’ve witnessed a disturbing trend of legislators increasingly delegating much of the authority to set the laws that govern the land to the executive branch, which includes unelected officials at administrative agencies. This undermines democratic accountability, contributes to government bloat and abuse of powers, and disrupts the balance of power crafted so carefully by the framers. Reasserting congressional authority is essential for maintaining a balanced government and ensuring that policies reflect voters’ wishes. It’s also the best hope for promoting economic freedom and growth. Unfortunately, getting Congress to stop evading its authority is an uphill battle. … Nevertheless, there is some light at the end of the tunnel, as the Supreme Court might soon stop being so deferential to executive branch agencies in interpreting the laws set by Congress.” (06/21/24)

28) UK Technocrats Sharpen the Knives of Manipulation
Source: Brownstone Institute
by Gary Sidley

“My recently published research into the UK Government’s deployment of behavioural science strategies – ‘nudges’ – leads to a startling conclusion: in every sphere of daily life, our thoughts and actions are being psychologically manipulated so as to align them with what the state’s technocrats have deemed to be in our best interests. It seems that open, transparent debate is no longer considered necessary. How did my nation, a purported beacon of freedom and democracy, descend to such a position? While there have been multiple participants in this journey into behavioural science-fueled authoritarianism, a historical review of the key players indicates that American scholars have contributed in crucial ways to this trajectory.” (06/23/24)

29) Eurosatory Controversy Begs the Question: Is an Ethical Arms Show Possible?
Source: Common Dreams
by Robert C Koehler

“The term is ‘banal militarism’; that is to say, violence and the preparation for violence so utterly commonplace that most people don’t even notice. Banal militarism is as American as apple pie. It’s also global in scope. As Richard Rubenstein writes: ‘Part of the reason for the relative immunity of militarism to criticism is the extraordinary cultural power in American society of pro-military institutions and ways of thought. What some analysts call ‘banal militarism’ is omnipresent, so much so that it becomes virtually invisible, part of the air that one breathes.’ That is to say, banal militarism manifests itself in the stories we tell, the symbols we revere, the movies we watch. Even the metaphors we use! The war on drugs… the war on (my God!) cancer… on and on.” (06/22/24)

30) Democracy Is Not the Same Thing as Freedom
Source: Ludwig von Mises Institute
by Soham Patil

“In our modern world, most states are democracies or at least call themselves ‘democratic.’ The adoption of democracy is hailed as one of humanity’s greatest achievements. Once upon a time, humanity broke out of the shackles of monarchies and has never looked back since. Nowadays, all citizens in democratic countries are free and safe from despots. Except, that is far from the truth. Democratic systems have been around for a long time. Ancient Greece comes to mind as the most prominent example of democracy in antiquity. While modern democracies are wildly different from the ones in ancient Athens, they are still susceptible to the pitfalls applicable to all democracies.” (06/22/24)

31) Alexander Hamilton and The Right to Fight the Government
Source: Town Hall
by Mark Lewis

“‘When a government betrays the people by amassing too much power and becoming tyrannical, people have no choice but to exercise their original right of self-defense: to fight the government.’ This is a great quote from Hamilton and something all Americans used to know. It is one of the founding principles of the United States and is exactly why the current Democratic Party hates America and our Founding Fathers so much. The Democrats want a totalitarian government: a subservient, obedient populace who will not fight the government, but will give total power to tyrants and do what they are told. If they can’t get the current crop of Americans to kiss their feet, they will import [sic] millions of foreigners who will.” (06/22/24)

32) Defining Educational Expenditure
Source: David Friedman’s Substack
by David Friedman

“A recent conversation with fellow supporters of educational vouchers raised a question that I had not adequately considered: What counts as an educational expenditure? Since one of the benefits of a market is the opportunity to explore new and different ways of producing things, voucher money should be available to be spent on educating children whatever the mechanism not limited to the present model of schooling. That could include conventional private schools, home schooling, microschools, learning pods, online education, correspondence courses, and other alternatives that have not occurred to me. That raises the problem of how to define an educational expense in order to decide whether it qualifies to have voucher money spent on it.” (06/22/24)

“It takes a profound cruelty to support raining tens of thousands of tons of military explosives onto a giant concentration camp full of children. It takes outright malignant narcissism to expect everyone to accept this, and to act wounded and indignant when they don’t. … Zionism is like the exact opposite of people who identify as ‘spiritual but not religious;’ it’s religion stripped bare of all spirituality until it’s nothing but a shitty political ideology that’s ultimately really about land, western imperialism, and geostrategic control.” (06/21/24)

35) It Is Time for Radical Candor
Source: The Dispatch
by Kevin D Williamson

“[L]ike our politics and political campaigns per se, our political journalism has rules and parameters, conventions, lines within which you are expected to stay. I suppose that if I were better at that — if I could take the boredom — I’d probably have had a different kind of career than the one I have had. But I get hung up on stuff, e.g., the idiotic words ‘radical candor’ coming out of the mouth of a sniveling little weasel who is going to get stomped into goo by a beady-eyed, cosmically worthless, evolution-missed-a-generation smegma smear of a subhuman being such as Matt Gaetz and deserve it. It’s another little Battle of Stalingrad: It’s a pity somebody has to win; all a decent person can do is pray for casualties.” (06/21/24)

37) Hunter Biden’s case just got a lot tougher after new SCOTUS gun ruling
Source: Fox News
by Jonathan Turley

“On Friday, Hunter Biden may have lost the greatest Hail Mary pass in history. When Cowboys quarterback Roger Staubach threw his famous winning touchdown pass to wide receiver Drew Pearson in 1975, he later explained ‘I closed my eyes and said a Hail Mary.’ For Hunter, the pass to the Supreme Court roughly 50 years later just missed in equally spectacular fashion. Hunter and his legal team were counting on the Court striking down the federal gun law at issue in the case of United States v. Rahimi. … He has been arguing against the position of his father’s administration and adopting the same argument of the National Rifle Association (NRA) in challenging the constitutionality of the law. The Supreme Court just voted 8-1 that the law is indeed constitutional and that a court can temporarily deprive citizens of the right to possess weapons for the protection of others.” (06/21/24)

38) SCOTUS Did Not “Dodge” the Abortion Pill Case
Source: Law & Liberty
by Richard W Garnett

“Aunanimous ruling by the Supreme Court of the United States, preserving a federal agency’s relaxed regulations of an abortion-causing drug, is not what contemporary Court-related coverage and commentary would lead one to expect. Although, in fact, consensus is the order of the day at the Court, breathless reports of split decisions, bitter dissents, and partisan divides — especially in June — tend to generate more attention and, unfortunately, distort the public perception of the justices and their work. So when the Court ruled unanimously on a case touching on the hottest of all hot-button issues, some outlets characterized it as a ‘dodge’ or based on a ‘technicality.'” (06/21/24)

39) No, We Don’t Need Federal Homeschooling Standards
Source: Foundation for Economic Education
by Kerry McDonald

“Beyond the obvious point that there is no constitutional role for the federal government in education, the proposal for top-down, national mandates on homeschoolers assumes that the government knows best when it comes to education. Yet, the vast majority of school founders I interview are former public school teachers who grew so disillusioned with the rigidity, standardization, and coercion of government-run schooling that they left to create their own schools and spaces. Many families are also leaving government-run schools for similar reasons, seeking more joyful and enriching learning experiences for their children.” (06/21/24)

40) The Magna Carta’s Constitutional Tradition
Source: American Institute for Economic Research
by Will Sellers

“Survival of the fittest was not a theory but was a present reality for most of the history of the world, and the slogan ‘might makes right’ was the equivalent of the rule of law in many places. Merge these ideas with the concept of the divine right of kings, and you have a formula for arbitrary government that changes with the whim of the ruler. For much of the world, this is how government functions. … But civilization has another tradition that exalts the law above the unfettered discretion of any ruler and balances the power of government to make certain that authority is disbursed and not concentrated in one place where it might be subject to abuse. This tradition prominently manifested itself 809 years ago on a small meadow called Runnymede about 25 miles from London.” (06/21/24)

41) What Do We Mean by Transformative Change?
Source: Common Dreams
by James Gustave Speth

“Progressives and many others agree on one thing: Across a broad front of national life, the American economy and our politics are not delivering good results. The documented truth is that the conditions of life and living in our country are deplorable for most people, with almost all measures of public well-being behind other upper income countries. That has been the case for decades, actually, and is one of the things that accounts for the widespread political disaffection in American today. When combined with extraordinary wealth concentrated in the hands of a tiny minority, the unsurprising result is public anger and resentment. A host of reforms are advocated to improve key aspects of national life: in education, healthcare, child welfare, finance and banking, environmental and climate protection, taxes, social justice, advancement of women, and more.” (06/22/24)

by David Weigel

Interview with Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee president Heather Williams. Williams: “We’re continuing to see real progress being made in suburban districts, without question. But in order to win a legislative majority, in any state, we need Democrats in urban areas; we need candidates who represent the suburbs and exurbs; we need people who can compete in rural areas. This is why having the right candidates all across the state matters so much. You put all of those districts in play, you put really smart storytellers out into the world, you talk to voters and you sell our story. We’re not giving up on anywhere.” (06/21/24)

43) This Was the Week When the RFK Jr. Fantasy Went Bust
Source: The Daily Beast
by Matt Lewis

“As we hurtle toward the first 2024 presidential debate on Thursday, it’s worth asking: What the hell happened to Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.? Back in April, an Emerson College poll had him at 21 percent, and a Fox News poll from around the same time had him at 19 percent. At that moment, it was easy to believe that he might build on that foundation, surpassing the 19 percent Ross Perot garnered in the 1992 presidential election. But since then, Kennedy’s campaign has stalled. Most recently, Kennedy failed to qualify for the CNN debate, a development that could prove devastating and dispositive.” (06/21/24)

44) Democrats’ Political Views Are Shifting Faster Than Republicans’
Source: Reason
by JD Tuccille

“For those seeking balance in this polarized moment in American politics, Gallup offers news that initially seems good. The polling firm finds Americans are becoming increasingly socially liberal while generally remaining economically conservative. Using a crude definition of libertarian and classical liberal ideas, growing social liberalism paired with economic conservatism sounds encouraging. But the ideological shift is all one-sided, with Democrats moving left much more than Republicans moved to the right — threatening not balance, but a wider partisan divide.” (06/21/24)

45) Joe Biden a one-trick-pony with a single act: Blame Donald Trump
Source: New York Post
by Michael Goodwin

“‘Burn our boats!’ came the order from 16th-century Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortes. Having landed in the New World, legend has it that he wanted to drive his troops to victory by eliminating their only chance of escape. Joe Biden is nobody’s idea of a swashbuckling adventurer or military leader, but he is adopting a political version of Cortes’[s] gamble. Signs indicate the president is giving up on selling his White House term as a success and betting his re-election campaign on a single message: Donald Trump is bad for America. Make that really, really, really bad. He’ll kill democracy and lock up his opponents. Remember Jan. 6 and, oh, he’s a convicted felon, too. From here to November, that’s the sum and substance of what the president and his surrogates will say.” (06/22/24)

46) Biden Is a Study in Failed Centrism
Source: The American Conservative
by James P Pinkerton

“What is Bidenism, exactly? Well, that’s a question, because the answer is as faded as the man himself. Once upon a time, Joe Biden stood for, or straddled, a calculating center-leftism — punctuated by occasional conservative gestures and neoconservative votes — wrapped in a talkative persona. That’s how he won six terms in the U.S. Senate and was deemed attractive enough to be tapped for the vice presidency. But now Biden is, well, old. Let’s just say it, even if his friends in the media won’t. His once-nimble ability to step carefully has become as slushy as the oversized shoes he wears to keep from slipping or tripping.” (06/21/24)

49) Ranked-Choice Voting Draws Bipartisan Ire
Source: The American Prospect
by Gabrielle Gurley

“What do Colorado, Mississippi, Alabama, and Louisiana have in common this election season? Govs. Kay Ivey (R-AL), Tate Reeves (R-MS), Jeff Landry (R-LA), and Jared Polis (D-CO) have all signed bills that would ban or seriously impede the implementation of ranked-choice voting. In the past two months, these states have frowned on RCV, a small-d democratic reform hailed by its supporters as a way to increase candidate choice, jump-start higher voter turnout, and generate more overall enthusiasm in campaigns and elections in a country where staying home and not voting might as well be its own political party. Kentucky and Oklahoma have also recently banned RCV, and Florida, Idaho, Montana, South Dakota, and Tennessee have nixed the reform as well. There are various ranked-choice voting frameworks, but the general premise is that voters can better express their interests by indicating first, second, third, or more choices.” (06/21/24)
