1)  SCOTUS requires states to fund religious schools
Source: NBC News

“The Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that state programs providing money for public school tuition cannot exclude schools that offer religious instruction. The decision relaxed long-standing restrictions on using taxpayer money to pay for religious education, further lowering the wall of separation between church and state. The vote was 6-3, with Justices Stephen Breyer, Elena Kagan and Sonia Sotomayor dissenting. At issue was a state program in Maine that made taxpayer money available to families who live in remote areas without public high schools. Under the state law, they could use the money for their children’s tuition at public or private schools in other communities, but not for sectarian schools, defined as those that promote a particular faith or belief system and teach material ‘through the lens of this faith.'” (06/21/22)

2)  Italy: Foreign Minister Di Maio quits 5-Star to form new group
Source: Reuters

“Italy’s Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio said on Tuesday he was leaving the 5-Star Movement to form a new parliamentary group backing the government of Prime Minister Mario Draghi. Di Maio’s move comes after he accused 5-Star leader and former Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte of undermining government efforts to support Ukraine and weakening Rome’s standing within the European Union. The split in the 5-Star Movement threatens to bring fresh instability to Draghi’s multi-party coalition. 5-Star has become increasingly uneasy about Italy sending weapons to Ukraine and there has been widespread speculation that Conte is considering pulling the movement out of the government in an effort to halt its slide in opinion polls.” (06/21/22)

3)  UK: More Than a Million London Commuters Stay Home on Train Strike
Source: Bloomberg

“More than a million London commuters decided to take advantage of the sunshine and stay home during a strike that ground the capital’s underground travel to a near halt. Tube journeys were down 95% on Tuesday morning after a walkout by 10,000 London Underground staff who, along with colleagues across the country, are seeking better pay amid a cost-of-living crisis. The rail and underground strikes could cost the U.K. economy almost £100 million, with London facing the biggest blow, according to an analysis by the Centre for Economics and Business Research released on June 10. That’s in part because almost half of households in the capital don’t own a car.” (06/21/22)

4)  SD: Ravnsborg convicted on two impeachment charges, removed from office
Source: CBS News

“The South Dakota Senate on Tuesday convicted Attorney General Jason Ravnsborg of two impeachment charges stemming from a 2020 car crash in which he killed a pedestrian, triggering his automatic removal from office. A vote was pending on whether Ravnsborg should be barred from holding future office. Ravnsborg told a 911 dispatcher the night of the crash that he might have struck a deer or other large animal, and has said he didn’t know he struck a man — 55-year-old Joseph Boever — until he returned to the scene the next morning. Criminal investigators said they didn’t believe some of Ravnsborg’s statements. The Republican-controlled Senate voted to convict Ravnsborg, a Republican, on both impeachment charges against him: committing crimes that caused someone’s death, and malfeasance for misleading law enforcement and abusing the powers of his office.” (06/21/22)

5)  Russia: Moscow legislator jailed after opposing invasion of Ukraine
Source: LaCrosse Tribune

“A court in the Russian capital on Tuesday extended the arrest of a municipal legislator charged with discrediting the country’s military after his criticism of Russia’s military action in Ukraine. Moscow’s Meshchansky District Court ordered Alexei Gorinov to be kept in custody pending his trial. Gorinov, a member of the municipal council of Moscow’s Krasnoselsky District, has remained in jail since his arrest in April. He was accused of discrediting the country’s military after speaking out against Russia’s military action in Ukraine during the council’s session in March. Addressing the court on Tuesday, Gorinov rejected the charges and insisted that he was merely expressing his political views, noting that ‘what I said was my personal opinion and belief.’ He may face a fine or a prison term of up to 10 years if convicted.” (06/21/22)

6)  Cryptocurrencies rebound after big weekend dip
Source: CNBC

“Bitcoin climbed on Tuesday after a slew of negative headlines had pushed the cryptocurrency to a new 2022 low over the weekend. The price of bitcoin jumped more than 5% to $21,156.34, according to Coin Metrics. Over the weekend, it fell as low as $17,958.05. That was its lowest point since December 2020. Meanwhile, ether rose more than 3% to $1,145.16. … Cryptocurrency companies, including Coinbase and BlockFi, are laying off employees. Crypto lenders, which promise users high yields for depositing their digital coins, have been sparking insolvency fears. In a similar approach to those considering stocks, crypto investors are treading lightly around bear market bounces with some anticipating that the asset class could fall even further before seeing a meaningful rebound.” (06/21/22)

7)  TX: Police in Uvalde reportedly had rifles earlier, and door was unlocked
Source: SFGate

“Multiple police officers armed with rifles and at least one ballistic shield stood and waited in a school hallway for nearly an hour while a gunman carried out a massacre of 19 elementary students and two teachers, according to a Monday news report that marks the latest embarrassing revelation about the failure of law enforcement to thwart the attack. The officers with heavier firepower and tactical equipment were there within 19 minutes of the gunman arriving on campus — earlier than previously known, according to documents reviewed by the Austin American-Statesman and KVUE-TV. The outlets’ report, which did not indicate the source of the documents, nevertheless intensifies the anguish and questions over why police didn’t act sooner to stop the May 24 slaughter in the Robb Elementary School classroom.” (06/21/22)

8)  SCOTUS rejects Bayer’s bid to stop Roundup lawsuits
Source: ABC News

“The Supreme Court has rejected Bayer’s appeal to shut down thousands of lawsuits claiming that its Roundup weedkiller causes cancer. The justices on Tuesday left in place a $25 million judgment in favor of Edwin Hardeman, a California man who says he developed cancer from using Roundup for decades to treat poison oak, overgrowth and weeds on his San Francisco Bay Area property. Hardeman’s lawsuit had served as a test case for thousands of similar lawsuits.” (06/21/22)

9)  Hillary Clinton’s flip flop on transgender issues: From “highest priority” to “should not be a priority”
Source: Fox News

“Hillary Clinton has changed her tune on the order of importance for transgender rights ahead of the midterm elections, indicating during a recent interview that it shouldn’t be a top priority for Democrats who want to hold onto their razor-thin majorities in Congress. ‘We are standing on the precipice of losing our democracy, and everything that everybody else cares about then goes out the window,’ Clinton told the Financial Times in a piece Friday when asked about the ‘transgender debate’. ‘Look, the most important thing is to win the next election,’ she said. ‘The alternative is so frightening that whatever does not help you win should not be a priority.’ Clinton’s comments are a stark departure from what she once described as the ‘highest priority.'” [editor’s note: Hillary Clinton’s “highest priority” is and always has been Hillary Clinton – TLK] (06/21/22)

10) Twitter’s board unanimously approves Musk’s $44 billion takeover bid
Source: New York Post

“Elon Musk moved one step closer to completing his $44 billion takeover of Twitter on Tuesday when the company’s board of directors unanimously approved his buyout offer, according to an SEC filing. Shares of Twitter were up by just under 1% in the early morning hours on Tuesday, selling for slightly more than $38 a share – well below the $54.20 per share tender offer from Musk. The regulatory filing comes just days after Musk held a virtual, all-hands meeting with Twitter employees — the latest sign that the world’s richest man is serious about following through on his acquisition plans. Last month, Musk said he was putting the deal ‘on hold’ pending a review of Twitter’s policies as it relates to bots and spam accounts.” (06/21/22)

11) Russian journalist Dmitry Muratov auctions Nobel medal for $103 million
Source: BBC News [UK state media]

“The Russian editor-in-chief of the independent newspaper Novaya Gazeta has auctioned off his Nobel Peace Prize medal for $103.5m (£84m). Dmitry Muratov said all the money from the sale would go to help refugees from the war in Ukraine. Muratov was co-awarded the peace prize in 2021 for defending freedom of expression in Russia. Novaya Gazeta suspended its operations in March, shortly after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. This came after Moscow said anyone who described Russia’s actions in Ukraine as a ‘war’ would face heavy fines or closures. The Kremlin calls the conflict a ‘special military operation.’ Heritage Auctions, which conducted the sale, has not revealed who the winning bidder was. In April, Muratov was attacked with red paint laced with the solvent acetone aboard a train in Russia. The male attacker shouted, ‘Muratov, this is for our boys,’ he said.” (06/21/22)

12) Hong Kong: Jumbo floating restaurant sinks at sea
Source: CNN

“An iconic Hong Kong floating restaurant has sunk, just days after it was towed out to sea en route to an unspecified destination. Jumbo Kingdom, a three-story vessel, the exterior of which was styled after a Chinese imperial palace, was towed away by tugboats last Tuesday after nearly half a century moored in the city’s southwest waters. The restaurant’s main boat was traveling to an undisclosed shipyard when it capsized on Saturday after meeting ‘adverse conditions’ near the Paracel Islands (also known as the Xisha Islands) in the South China Sea …. Jumbo Kingdom, which at one time was the world’s largest floating restaurant, starred in many Hong Kong and international movies, including ‘Enter the Dragon’ starring Bruce Lee, and ‘James Bond: The Man with the Golden Gun.’ It also hosted visiting luminaries including Queen Elizabeth II, Jimmy Carter and Tom Cruise.” (06/21/22)

13) Free [sic] School Meal Waivers Set to Expire as Senate Pushes $857 Billion Military Budget
Source: Common Dreams

“Federal free school meal waivers that would cost just $11 billion to extend for another year are set to lapse at the end of the month due to GOP obstruction as the Senate simultaneously advances (on a bipartisan basis) an $857 billion military budget, a $45 billion increase over President Joe Biden’s latest request. Anti-hunger activists have been warning for months that allowing the nutrition waivers to expire on June 30 would be disastrous for millions of children across the U.S., particularly during the summer months when vulnerable kids’ access to meals becomes even more tenuous. ‘Universal school lunches have been a lifeline for families, especially as corporations price-gouge at the grocery store,’ Rep. Katie Porter (D-Calif.) said Monday. ‘I’m leading the charge in Congress to extend this vital program.'” (06/21/22)

The White House on Tuesday announced President Joe Biden’s intent to appoint Marilynn ‘Lynn’ Malerba as his administration establishes an Office of Tribal and Native Affairs at the Treasury Department, which will be overseen by the U.S. treasurer. The treasurer’s duties include oversight of the U.S. Mint, serving as a liaison with the Federal Reserve and overseeing Treasury’s Office of Consumer Policy. 15) NASA’s Artemis 1 moon rocket passes crucial fueling test despite leak
Source: Space.com

“NASA’s Artemis 1 moon mission completed a crucial preflight milestone today (June 20), wrapping up a two-day set of tests known as a wet dress rehearsal. Those tests included fueling up Artemis 1’s huge Space Launch System (SLS) rocket and performing a simulated countdown that took the vehicle and NASA’s Orion capsule through most of the progressions they would endure on launch day before engine ignition. … The Artemis 1 team noticed a hydrogen leak during fueling today, and they intentionally ‘masked’ data associated with the issue to let the countdown continue. (During an actual launch countdown, such data would have raised red flags, NASA officials said.) This change meant the countdown was halted at T-29 seconds before ‘liftoff,’ instead of T-9 seconds as originally planned. … On the actual mission, the SLS rocket will launch an uncrewed Orion on a roughly month-long journey to the moon and back.” (06/21/22)

16) South Korea: Regime’s second space rocket launch successfully puts satellites in orbit
Source: Reuters

“South Korea’s second test launch of its domestically produced Nuri rocket successfully placed several satellites in orbit on Tuesday, officials said, taking a major step in efforts to jumpstart its space programme after a first test failed last year. … The three-stage KSLV-II Nuri rocket, designed by the Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) to eventually put 1.5-ton payloads into orbit 600 to 800 km (370 to 500 miles) above the Earth, is a cornerstone of the country’s ambitious goals for 6G networks, spy satellites, and even lunar probes. It uses only Korean rocket technologies, and is the country’s first domestically built space launch vehicle.” (06/21/22)

17) “First-degree puppetry”: Colbert breaks silence on staffers’ Capitol arrests
Source: Fox News

“Stephen Colbert addressed the recent arrests of his crew and production members, who were caught and charged with being in an unauthorized area of a U.S. Capitol building last week. During Monday night’s ‘Late Show,’ Colbert downplayed the arrests as a ‘very professional’ interaction between his staff and ‘cautious’ Capitol Police officers. The host opened the show by asking the audience about their weekends before joking, ‘Well, I had an interesting one and some members of my staff had a memorable one. … The Capitol police were just doing their job, my staff was just doing their job, everyone was very professional, everyone was very calm,’ the host continued. ‘My staffers were detained, processed and released. “Elon Musk has sought to clarify how many Tesla workers will lose their jobs, following the launch of a lawsuit by former employees who claim the automaker breached U.S. labor laws. Speaking at an event hosted by Bloomberg Tuesday, Musk said Tesla would reduce its salaried workforce by 10% in the next three months, while at the same time growing the number of hourly employees. … Musk said Tuesday that this meant Tesla’s layoffs announcement would affect around 3.5% of its overall workforce, adding the actual amount was ‘not super material.’ Salaried workers account for about two-thirds of Tesla employees, he added.” (06/21/22)

“Elon Musk’s transgender daughter has applied to legally change her name and gender, saying she no longer wants to ‘be related to my biological father in any way, shape or form.’ The 18-year-old has asked to be recognised as female and have the name Vivian Jenna Wilson. She was known as Xavier Alexander Musk. The petition for both a name change and a new birth certificate was filed with the Los Angeles County Superior Court in Santa Monica. Her request is set out in court documents filed in April, which have only recently come to light. There was no further detail of the apparent rift between Mr Musk’s daughter and her father. The Tesla and SpaceX entrepreneur has yet to comment. Mr Musk was married to Vivian’s mother, Canadian author Justine Wilson, from 2000 until they divorced in 2008.” (06/21/22)

21) Florida: So Much for “Parental Rights”
Source: Garrison Center
by Thomas L Knapp

“In late March, Florida governor Ron DeSantis was all about ‘parental rights,’ signing what critics called a ‘Don’t Say Gay’ bill, which he insisted was really all about protecting the ability of parents to guide their children’s upbringing, control what subject matter they were exposed to in the classroom, and be informed by schools of matters pertaining to their ‘mental, emotional, or physical well-being.’ Only three months later, he’s threatening to have parents investigated by the state’s ‘child protective’ bureaucracy should they choose to take their kids to entertainment events he doesn’t approve of. And the same legislators who passed that ‘parental rights’ bill now propose  to make parental non-conformity with Ron DeSantis’s entertainment preferences a felony punishable by, among other things, termination of the ‘parental rights’ they so recently postured as defenders of.” (06/21/22)

22) There Are No Libertarian Objections to Open Borders
Source: Bet On It
by Chris Freiman

“Some people claim to uphold libertarian principles but reject open borders. I’m going to explain why this isn’t a consistent position. To begin, try to imagine a self-professed libertarian who asserts that the state should prohibit people from congregating at their church on Easter. It’s obvious that this claim isn’t consistent with libertarian principles — the prohibition would violate private property rights and freedom of association. And if you reject either of those rights, you’re not a libertarian because they’re definitional features of libertarianism. Similarly, prohibiting someone from immigrating to the United States (for instance) violates private property rights and freedom of association.” (06/21/22)

23) When “Jawboning” Creates Private Liability
Source: Electronic Frontier Foundation
by David Greene

“For the last several years we have seen numerous arguments that social media platforms are ‘state actors’ that ‘must carry’ all user speech. According to this argument, they are legally required to publish all user speech and treat it equally. Under U.S. law, this is almost always incorrect. The First Amendment generally requires only governments to honor free speech rights and protects the rights of private entities like social media sites to curate content on their sites and impose content rules on their users. Among the state actor theories presented is one based on collaboration with the government on content moderation. ‘Jawboning’ — or when government authorities influence companies’ social media policies — is extremely common. At what point, if any, does a private company become a state actor when they act according to it?” (06/21/22)

24) What’s So Great About Democracy?
Source: Future of Freedom Foundation
by Jacob G Hornberger

“At the recent Summit of the Americas in Los Angeles, President Biden refused to permit Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua to attend because they aren’t democracies. As everyone knows, for the past several decades, the U.S. government has made democracy its shibboleth. It’s as if democracy is something sacred. Yet, what’s so great about democracy? It’s really nothing more than people selecting their rulers by votes rather than rulers selecting themselves. What’s so sacred about voters? U.S. officials promote the notion that voters select the best people to public office, as if they always elect saints. Given that this is the 50th anniversary of the Watergate scandal, why not apply the democracy test to Richard Nixon, a president who was forced to leave office because of his criminal activity?” (06/21/22)

26) What Difference Does a War Make? The Geopolitics of the New Cold War
Source: TomDispatch
by Alfred McCoy

“From his first days in office, Joe Biden and his national security advisers seemed determined to revive America’s fading global leadership via the strategy they knew best: challenging the ‘revisionist powers’ Russia and China with a Cold War-style aggressiveness. When it came to Beijing, the president combined the policy initiatives of his predecessors, pursuing Barack Obama’s ‘strategic pivot’ from the Middle East to Asia, while continuing Donald Trump’s trade war with China. … Writing in the December 2021 Foreign Affairs, a group of famously disputatious diplomatic historians agreed on one thing: ‘Today, China and the United States are locked in what can only be called a new cold war.’ Just weeks later, the present mimed the past in ways that went well beyond even that pessimistic assessment as Russia began massing 190,000 troops on the border of Ukraine.” (06/21/22)

27) A “New Compact” with Saudi Arabia Is a Terrible Idea
Source: Eunomia

“We have already seen in Yemen what indulging the Saudi government does to regional stability. The Saudi government has proven that selling them weapons for ‘self-defense’ has just enabled them to wage an unnecessary and atrocious war against their neighbor. Our government should stop providing them with the means to engage in more aggression in the future, not least because their use of U.S.-made weapons in their war crimes implicates the U.S. in those atrocities. The current truce in Yemen is holding, and that’s good news for the people of Yemen, but we should make sure that the U.S. is never again in a position where it is expected to support another Saudi war, whether it is in Yemen or anywhere else.” (06/21/22)

Source: Niskanen Center

“One of the most common critiques of a carbon tax is that it would have a regressive distributional impact. However, the United States’ continued reliance on a patchwork of climate regulations is concerning. In addition to the several advantages of a carbon tax over climate regulations, there is a significant disparity between the distributional analysis of carbon taxation and climate regulations. While many studies model the distributional effects of a carbon tax, the lack of distributional analysis of environmental regulations is jaw-dropping.” (06/21/22)

Their dream is becoming reality: Energy prices are spiraling out of control and will soon get even worse. Yet we are no closer to solving climate change. Energy costs increased 26% across industrialized economies last year and will rise globally by another 50% this year. While Western governments are blaming Russia’s war on Ukraine, prices were already rising because of climate policies designed to choke fossil-fuel investment. Since the 2015 Paris agreement was inked, the world’s 1,200 biggest energy corporations have slashed capital investment in oil and gas by more than two-thirds. Huge price rises are the inevitable result of forcing more energy out of an increasingly starved system.” (06/21/22)

30) Leading the Green Lemmings
Source: Heartland Institute
by Viv Forbes

“Australia’s new ALP/Green/Teal government has a Zero Emissions plan, putting them on track to be world leader of the Green Lemmings. John Kerry of USA was a strong contender to win the Green Lemming race. But he was given a stiff handicap by UN organisers because America has access to coal, oil, gas, hydro and nuclear power, plus cross-border pipelines and power lines. Biden is trying to close these loopholes.” (06/21/22)

31) Why they’re right to strike
Source: spiked
by Tom Slater

“I’m old enough to remember when Boris Johnson was calling for a high-wage economy. Back in September, amid an acute lorry-driver shortage, the UK prime minister insisted that haulage firms should cough up more rather than rely on cheap European labour. Now his ministers are taking to the airwaves to tell working-class people they’ll have to just put up with a real-terms pay cut as prices soar. Thankfully, workers are taking matters into their own hands. In May, members of the RMT rail union voted overwhelmingly in favour of this week’s strikes, easily clearing all the bureaucratic thresholds put in place to limit industrial action. … The strikes have once again exposed the right’s blindspots where freedom and democracy are concerned. They support the right to strike, so long as it’s never exercised.” (06/21/22)

32) The EU’s Balance of Power Is Shifting East
Source: Foreign Policy
by Eoin Drea

“Despite the celebratory rhetoric in Brussels about the European Union’s surprisingly robust response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine — which just culminated in the European Commission’s recommendation of membership candidacy to Ukraine — the war has not united the bloc in any unprecedented or transformative way. In fact, it’s having exactly the opposite effect: Beneath the soaring vista of Ukraine as a catalyst for a more muscular and geopolitically effective EU lie deep divisions, shifting allegiances, and a much more complex reality. The war — or, more precisely, key EU members’ completely divergent approaches to Russia and how they expect a postwar peace to look—is altering the very power balance within the bloc itself. And that’s bad news for Germany, France, and the rest of the EU’s traditional powerbrokers.” (06/21/22)

33) Trump and His Allies: “A Clear and Present Danger to American Democracy”
Source: Common Dreams
by Steven Harper

“Former federal appellate judge J. Michael Luttig concluded his testimony before the House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the U.S. Capitol with these words: ‘Today, almost two years after that fateful day in January of 2021, still Donald Trump and his law allies and supporters are a clear and present danger to American democracy.’ Judge Luttig’s concerns carry enormous weight. In 1991, President George H.W. Bush appointed him to the federal appeals court. Years later, he landed on President George W. Bush’s short list of U.S. Supreme Court nominees twice. On the evening of January 4, 2021, Vice President Mike Pence’s outside counsel sought Luttig’s advice on a critical question: Could the Vice President overturn the election, as Trump was demanding of Pence? Along with every other legal adviser whom Pence consulted on the subject, Luttig said no.” (06/21/22)

34) Here’s what Congress can do to lower inflation
Source: The Hill
by John Goodman and Laurence Kotlikoff

“Inflation is the highest it’s been in 40 years. There are many culprits — COVID-19, a 40 percent increase in the money supply, largely to finance COVID spending, the war in Ukraine, China supply-side disruptions and supply bottlenecks due to inappropriate shipping and trucking regulation. Congress can’t change these factors. But it can help us all weather inflation, be it short- or long-term. Here’s how.” (06/21/22)

35) Global warming: Are both sides wrong?
Source: EconLog
by Scott Sumner

“Many progressives view global warming as a looming catastrophe, justifying a major change in our lifestyle. Some conservatives regard global warming as a hoax. Most, however, acknowledge its reality, while arguing that economic models often show only a very modest hit to global GDP over the next century. (Large in dollar terms but quite small in percentage terms.) … I’d like to challenge the framing that both sides of the debate seem to have accepted, the view that addressing global warming requires major sacrifices. I suspect that the problem does requires major changes, but I see no reason to assume these changes would be sacrifices.” (06/21/22)

36) “Jane’s Revenge”: Abortion Terror Group or Terror Hoax?
Source: Reason
by Elizabeth Nolan Brown

“Are we headed for ‘a night of rage’ over abortion? An anonymous collective called Jane’s Revenge is threatening to create chaos when the U.S. Supreme Court releases its decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. … The [Wall Street Journal] suggests that Jane’s Revenge is going to ‘commit what sounds like what Democrats would call insurrection if it were aimed at another part of government.’ But we have no idea if the flyers are even real (as opposed to being put out by a group trying to make pro-choice activists look bad, or just stir up chaos and fear). And even if they are, it doesn’t follow that people are going to actually take up the call.” (06/21/22)

37) The Great Biden Recession of 2022 Is Already Here
Source: Town Hall
by Stephen Moore

“Last week, I was invited to testify before a House committee hearing titled: ‘How the Biden American Rescue Plan Saved the Economy and Lives.’ I am not making this up. Can you imagine taking a victory lap, given our current conditions? I told the Democrats on the committee that the idea that Congress would hold a hearing like this when the economy is coming unhinged only reinforces the suspicion held by most people that the Washington swamp is totally out of touch with the lives and hardships of everyday America. The reality of our predicament is best summarized by JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon, who warned investors to ‘brace yourself’ for what he called a fast-approaching economic ‘hurricane.'” (06/21/22)

38) The Ripples of Government Intervention
Source: American Institute for Economic Research
by Vincent Geloso

“In one of his early works, Ludwig von Mises argued that mixed economies, those that can neither bear the labels of laissez-faire capitalism or socialism, were inherently unstable. His claim was that once a government intervention began, it foiled economic calculation in ways that altered behavior. Once unforeseen consequences of the intervention start revealing themselves, policy-makers must either intervene once more or roll back the policy. In the end, an economy can be free or it can be centrally planned. It cannot be a mixture of both.” (06/21/22)

39) Three Things Biden Has Done That Increased Gas Prices
Source: Foundation for Economic Education
by Brad Polumbo

“The White House has tried to deflect blame for the insane surge in gas prices onto Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. And, to be fair, gas prices are definitely not completely within any president’s control. They absolutely are influenced by global factors, and the disruption in the global energy market caused by Putin’s invasion certainly has contributed to higher prices. But Biden isn’t off the hook. Gas prices started rising long before the invasion, and the president still has direct responsibility for how his policies have contributed to this problem. Here are three specific things Biden has done that have led to increased gas prices.” (06/21/22)

40) Cancel Zoning
Source: The Atlantic
by M Nolan Gray

“Until recently, zoning was a sleepy backwater in the policy world. The mere thought of a weeknight hearing or a 700-page ordinance was once enough to make even the most eager wonk’s eyes glaze over. If a layperson knew anything about zoning, chances are she didn’t have an opinion about it. The rules dictating where and how Americans lived and worked attracted curiously little attention. A decade of urban upheaval has changed all of that. … Boring though it may be, zoning has real-world effects that are dire. Between mandating parking garages and banning apartments, it has made infill development prohibitively difficult in many American cities. And in suburbs across the country, it has made the starter homes we so desperately need—think townhouses and homes on small lots — effectively illegal to build. If Americans want a fairer, more prosperous nation, zoning has got to go.” (06/21/22)

41) Corporate America Helping to Elect Anti-Abortion Attorneys General
Source: The American Prospect
by David Moore & Donald Shaw

“If the Supreme Court follows through with the draft opinion leaked last month and overturns Roe v. Wade, attorneys general in dozens of states with abortion bans already on the books will have new authority over how, or whether, those laws are enforced. … Twenty-two states have laws that could be used to restrict abortions, according to the Guttmacher Institute, including seven with pre-Roe abortion bans and 13 with ‘trigger’ laws that would take effect in the absence of Roe. Most of the states with abortion bans are solidly Republican and likely only to elect attorneys general who will enforce the laws aggressively, but in a handful of battleground states, Democratic candidates running for attorney general are telling voters that if elected they would find ways to legally not enforce the abortion ban laws in their states if Roe is overturned.” (06/21/22)

42) Expectations about prosecuting Trump may be shifting
Source: Washington Post
by Jennifer Rubin

“Many Republicans and mainstream media commentators have intoned that the House Jan. 6 committee’s hearings wouldn’t draw ratings or change voters’ minds. That was wrong. In fact, the evidence presented thus far has been far more impactful than the punditocracy predicted. … The serious tenor of the coverage and widespread interest in the evidence have several consequences. The first is that it might influence critical prosecutors …. Second, the committee has already heightened interest in another promising line of inquiry: Trump’s alleged scheme to raise money for his campaign’s election lawsuits through what the committee says is a nonexistent fund. … Third, in the event the Justice Department decides not to prosecute Trump and his closest cronies, Attorney General Merrick Garland will be under tremendous pressure to justify why the mound of evidence is not enough.” (06/21/22)

43) From the Eccles Building to Vegas: The Fed Enables the Worst Ponzi Schemes
Source: Ludwig von Mises Institute
by Doug French

“It seems a short leap from Robinhood or Coinbase to a Ponzi scheme. ‘Investing is simple here,’ Robinhood’s website leads. ‘Start building your portfolio with just $1.’ Scroll down a bit on coinbase.com, and it says, ‘Take control of your money.’ Charles Ponzi himself, called ‘a wizard of finance’ in 1920, was ‘the discoverer of wealth and happiness.’ Common folk cheered the dapper five-foot, two-inch Italian while lining up, desperate to hand Ponzi their savings and earn a 50 percent return in forty-five days. Get-rich-quick schemes never go out of style. … In 2017, with the public suffering from the effects of the Federal Reserve’s financial repression, Las Vegas attorney Matt Beasley and former pharmaceutical salesman and mortgage loan officer Jeffrey Judd cooked up a scheme that enticed investors into funding investments in personal injury settlement contracts that offered high returns.” (06/21/22)

44) The Age of Stupidity: From Johnson and Biden to Putin and Xi Jinping
Source: CounterPunch
by Patrick Cockburn

“The role of stupidity in determining the course of history is often underestimated by historians. They neglect it as too crude and shallow a factor to be the cause of crucial events, preferring to unearth more sophisticated and intellectually respectable explanations. Calling a leader ;a fool; may be pervasive as abuse, but is seldom accepted as the underlying reason for a calamitous decision. This is surely a mistake. ‘Never lose your sense of the superficial,’ said the newspaper publisher Lord Northcliffe and his advice applies as much to historic trends as it does to daily news. Yet pundits like to feel that they are digging deeper than a personal failing, and seldom focus on plain and simple stupidity as the reason why leaders make unforced errors.” (06/21/22)

45) New JP Morgan: Same as Old JP Morgan
Source: The Pamphleteer
by Davis Hunt

“JP Morgan’s actions during the Panic of 1907 buoyed and restored confidence in an American banking system buckling after two brothers miscalculated in their attempt to corner United Copper. Cited as the event that eventually resulted in the Federal Reserve Act of 1913, the Panic witnessed bank runs, liquidity crises, and exchange pauses as customers rushed to withdraw their assets as trust in banking institutions plummeted. Then considered one of if not the most prominent financier in the world, JP Morgan ended his vacation early to rally other bankers and use much of his own money to provide liquidity to ailing trust companies and banks across the country. … Morgan’s actions stabilized the markets, but the incident underscored the need for banking reform, and thus, we got the Federal Reserve.” (06/21/22)

46) America’s modern addiction to the big stick
Source: Responsible Statecraft
by Monica Duffy Toft

“The United States has always ‘suffered’ from exceptionalism in its foreign policy, but for much of its nearly 300-year history, that exceptionalism led to a foreign policy of distance keeping; a sense that the United States should lead by example, intervening by means of armed force except as a last resort. This sense was aptly summed up in Theodore Roosevelt’s ‘speak softly and carry a big stick’ aphorism. … America appears to have become addicted to the over-use of the stick, and the under-use of leadership by example, trade and aid, and diplomacy. The results — as illustrated by the 2002 and 2003 U.S. military interventions in Iraq and Afghanistan respectively — have been disappointing at best, and generally left the U.S. worse off.” (06/21/22)

47) Lithuanians Stick New Finger in Eye of Russian Bear
Source: Antiwar.com
by Ray McGovern

“Lithuania is trying to create new “facts on the ground,” hoping to provoke the kind of response from Russia that will determine tone and substance of the important NATO summit scheduled for June 28-30 in Madrid. On June 17 the Lithuanians announced they were banning the rail transit of goods through Lithuania to the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad. The ban went into effect on June 18. Sandwiched between EU and NATO members Poland and Lithuania, Kaliningrad receives supplies from Russia via rail and gas pipelines through Lithuania including goods sanctioned by the EU. Moscow’s response came on June 20, with a foreign ministry statement calling the denial of transit ‘openly hostile.'” (06/21/22)

48) American fascism and the War Between the States

And from them, of course, we can trace the Chauvinismo of Venezuela, much of the Islamic fascism (first named in 1933). And of course, the Franklin Delano Roosevelt New Deal of the 1930s and 1940s. 49) Beware the Corporate Appropriation of “Sustainable” Farming Practices
Source: In These Times
by Philip A Loring

“Global food systems are at a breaking point. Not only are they responsible for roughly a quarter of global greenhouse gas emissions, they are also the top contributors to water pollution and biodiversity collapse. On top of that, many aspects of our food systems are extremely vulnerable to disruptions from climate change and other shocks, as we saw in the first months of the pandemic. Agroecology (an approach to farming long practiced by Indigenous and peasant communities around the world) could transform our food systems for the better. And agribusinesses in the Global North are actively looking to agroecology to rebrand and build new markets under the banners of carbon farming and regenerative agriculture. But, a relentless focus on single outcomes, such as carbon, coupled with industry’s instinct to define and standardize, threatens the transformative potential of agroecology.” (06/21/22)

50) We Can All Be Evil and the Germans Were Nothing Special
Source: Brownstone Institute
by Paul Frijters, Gigi Foster, & Michael Baker

“For more than two years, the world has been swept up in covid mania. Ordinary people of almost every nationality have accepted the covid ‘story’, applauding as strong men and women have assumed dictatorial powers, suspended normal human rights and political processes, pretended that covid deaths were the only ones that mattered, closed schools, closed businesses, prevented people from earning livelihoods, and caused mass misery, poverty, and starvation. The more these strong men and women did these things, the louder the applause, and the greater the disapprobation and abuse levelled at those who decried such actions. Police bullying of those speaking out against the covid story was cheered on by populations keen to see the naysayers brought to justice. The past two years have proved that the Germans of the National Socialist period were really nothing special.” (06/20/22)
