1)  France: Macron gambles on snap election after crushing loss in EU vote
Source: CNN

“France’s President Emmanuel Macron has dissolved the country’s parliament, the National Assembly, and called a snap election after an exit poll showed his Renaissance party is set to be trounced by the far-right opposition in European parliamentary elections on Sunday. After initial projections, the far-right National Rally (RN) party came out on top with 31.5% of the vote, more than double the share of Renaissance, which scraped into second place on 15.2% of the vote, just ahead of the Socialists in third with 14.3% of the vote. … Speaking after Macron’s announcement, Marine Le Pen – who ran unsuccessfully against Macron for the French presidency in 2017 and 2022, but whose RN party has since enjoyed a resurgence in the polls – said she welcomed his decision to hold elections.” (06/09/24)

2)  Migrant abductions drop at US-Mexico border as Biden asylum ban rolls out
Source: Reuters

“The number of migrants caught illegally [sic] crossing the U.S.-Mexico border dropped on Friday, a senior U.S. border official told Reuters, saying it signaled a restrictive new Biden administration policy was deterring some illegal [sic] immigration. U.S. Border Patrol [abducted] around 3,100 people crossing illegally [sic], down roughly 20% from the days before, the official said, requesting anonymity to discuss preliminary figures. … Biden took office in 2021 pledging to reverse many of Trump’s restrictive immigration policies but has toughened his stance in the face of record migrant [abductions] at the border. Biden implemented a sweeping policy on Wednesday that generally bars migrants who illegally [sic] cross the U.S.-Mexico border from claiming asylum. The asylum ban has exceptions for unaccompanied minors, people who face serious medical or safety threats, and victims of trafficking.” (06/09/24)

3)  Israel: Gantz Quits Regime in Dispute with Netanyahu Over Gaza
Source: New York Times

“The Israeli politician Benny Gantz, a key member of the country’s war cabinet, quit the government on Sunday over Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s handling of the war in Gaza. The resignation dealt a blow to the appearance of unity that Mr. Netanyahu was able to marshal at the start of the conflict and exposed the divisions at the top of the Israeli leadership over the future of the war and its aftermath. … The move is unlikely to force Mr. Netanyahu from office — the prime minister’s government will still hold a narrow majority in Israel’s Parliament. Mr. Gantz’s exit comes as frustration mounts over the failure to decisively topple Hamas or to bring home all the hostages held in Gaza after the Oct. 7 terrorist attack on southern Israel.” (06/10/24)

4)  Leonard Peltier, held as political prisoner for nearly 50 years, faces what may be “last chance” parole hearing
Source: NBC News

“Native American activist and federal prisoner Leonard Peltier, who has maintained his innocence in the [killings] of two FBI agents [who had violently invaded a sovereign nation] almost half a century ago, is due for a full parole hearing Monday — his first in 15 years — as his supporters fear he may not get another opportunity to advocate for his release. A lawyer for Peltier, 79, said he has been ‘in good spirits’ as he prepares for the hearing at the Federal Correctional Complex Coleman in Florida. … FBI Director Christopher Wray said in a statement Friday that the agency ‘remains resolute’ in its opposition to Peltier’s release, citing how his appeals have been denied and that he had even escaped from a California prison in 1979 but was captured three days later.” (06/09/24)

5)  Iran: Regime okays six candidates for presidential race, but again blocks Ahmadinejad
Source: Associated Press

“Iran’s Guardian Council on Sunday approved the country’s hard-line parliament speaker and five others to run in the country’s June 28 presidential election following a helicopter crash that killed President Ebrahim Raisi and seven others. The council again barred former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, a firebrand populist known for the crackdown that followed his disputed 2009 re-election, from running. The council’s decision represents the starting gun for a shortened, two-week campaign to replace Raisi, a hard-line protege of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei once floated as a possible successor for the 85-year-old cleric.” (06/09/24)

6)  PA: Government Schooling Groups Slam Jay-Z’s Roc Nation for School Voucher Push
Source: Common Dreams

“As pro-public education groups plan a rally at the Pennsylvania State Capitol, educators and advocates on Friday criticized hip-hop icon Jay-Z’s company Roc Nation over a campaign backing a proposed school voucher program in the commonwealth. The campaign’s ‘Dine & Learn’ events in Philadelphia this month are intended to share information about the Pennsylvania Award for Student Success (PASS) or ‘Lifelife Scholarships’, as supporters also call them. If approved by state legislators in the next budget, the program would put tax dollars toward ‘education opportunity accounts’ for certain families to send their children to K-12 private schools rather than low-performing public ones. ‘We have enjoyed such a special connection with Philadelphians, so we’ve made it our mission to invest in the long-term success of the city’s changemakers,’ Roc Nation managing director of philanthropy Dania Diaz said in a statement.” (06/08/24)

7)  Thailand: Progressive Move Forward party braces for court case that might dissolve it
Source: SFGate

“The former leader of Thailand’s progressive opposition Move Forward party vowed on Sunday to keep fighting as the party faces a court case that could result in its dissolution. The Constitutional Court has agreed to rule on whether the party violated the constitution by proposing to amend a law that forbids defaming the country’s royal family. The petition requested the party’s dissolution and a 10-year ban on political activity by its executives. The court has not said when it will rule on this case. Pita Limjaroenrat, the former leader of Move Forward, laid out the details of the party’s legal defenses that have been submitted to the court at a news conference on Sunday. ‘If there is a rule of law in Thailand, I’m extremely confident’ the party’s arguments will prevail, he said.” (06/09/24)

8)  Iran: Regime imprisons a prominent whistleblower
Source: ABC News

“A prominent Iranian whistleblower was arrested and sent to prison to serve a 13-month sentence after he was convicted of “spreading lies to disturb the public mind,” Iranian media said Sunday. State-run IRNA news agency reported that the Tehran prosecutor summoned Yashar Soltani and sent him to prison. The report also said a court of appeal issued the verdict after 17 plaintiffs appealed the decision by a lower court, but gave no details about the earlier case. In recent years, Soltani has routinely published reports on corruption in public bodies. Authorities in the past few months have also detained several journalists and activists on security charges.” (06/09/24)

9)  NYC seventh-grader demands that DOE boss drop bizarre schedule
Source: New York Post

“Hey, teacher, leave them kids at home! A 12-year-old Brooklyn student is leading the charge in demanding the city Department of Education drop a bizarre scheduling plan that requires students to show up for a one-day school week before Christmas break. Isaac Regnier, a seventh-grader at IS 96 in Bensonhurst, started an online petition drive two weeks ago that has already garnered over 6,400 signatures calling on Chancellor David Banks to ‘Fix the NYC Schools Calendar.’ Isaac’s ingenious plan: cancel class on Monday, Dec. 23 (the day before winter break begins) and make it up by extending the academic year by one day, to Friday, June 27.” (06/08/24)

10) Reports: Clark left off USA Basketball national team roster
Source: CBC News [Canadian state media]

“Caitlin Clark won’t be headed to the Paris Olympics, according to media reports. The person, who provided the full roster to The Associated Press, spoke on condition of anonymity Saturday because no official announcement has been made. The decision was first reported by The Athletic. Clark does have some international experience with USA Basketball at a younger level, but she couldn’t attend the national training camp in Cleveland after she was invited because she was leading Iowa to the Final Four. Clark finished her career as the NCAA’s Division I all-time scoring leader. … While Clark won’t be headed to Paris, the U.S. is expected to take five-time gold medallist Diana Taurasi for a sixth Olympics. Taurasi will be joined by Phoenix Mercury teammate Brittney Griner.” (06/08/24)

11) CA: Tensions rise between residents, visitors over trail in affluent town
Source: SFGate

“Drama continues to unfold at a popular and controversial natural hot spring on the Central Coast. Montecito Hot Springs are several turquoise-blue pools of warm geothermal water. It’s accessible only via a hiking trail leading into Los Padres National Forest from an affluent neighborhood in Montecito. The springs’ popularity exploded during the pandemic, so much so that the roughly eight parking spaces at the trailhead leading to them no longer accommodated all of its visitors. People began parking their cars on the sides of nearby roads, and homeowners responded by placing large boulders and other landscaping features in public roadside right-of-ways, which landed them large fines from the county’s public works department in March. The hot springs’ most recent controversy, Noozhawk reported, comes in the form of a video that recently went viral among local residents.” (06/09/24)

12) India: India’s Modi Sworn in as Prime Minister for Third Term
Source: US News & World Report

“Narendra Modi was sworn in as India’s prime minister on Sunday for a record-equalling third term, but as a restive coalition’s head after a shock poll setback that will test his ability to ensure policy certainty in the world’s most populous nation. President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath of office to Modi at a grand ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, the president’s palace in New Delhi, attended by thousands of dignitaries, including the leaders of seven regional countries, Bollywood stars and industrialists. Modi, who started as a publicist of the Hindu nationalist Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the ideological parent of his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), is only the second person after independence leader Jawaharlal Nehru to serve a third straight term as prime minister.” (06/09/24)

Ms Frederiksen is said to have experienced minor whiplash after a man walked up to her and struck her in Copenhagen’s old town on Friday evening. A 39-year-old Polish man, who was arrested, appeared at the Court of Frederiksberg for a preliminary hearing on Saturday. He was charged with violence against a person in public service, and denies guilt, local media reported. The suspect was remanded in custody until 20 June, Copenhagen Police said on X. Ms Frederiksen’s office told the AFP news agency she had been taken to a hospital for a check-up after the incident. Her official schedule for Saturday was cancelled.” (06/09/24)

14) AIPAC is biggest source of GOP donations in Dem primaries
Source: Politico

“The American Israel Public Affairs Committee has become a fundraising juggernaut in recent years, raising more money for candidates than any similar organization this cycle as part of its mission to back candidates who support Israel. It’s the rare political organization that still garners support from Republican and Democratic donors while supporting candidates from both parties. But its primary focus has been leveraging its weight in competitive Democratic primaries, spending millions to boost moderates over progressives who have been critical of Israel. That has made AIPAC the biggest source of Republican money flowing into competitive Democratic primaries this year, according to a POLITICO analysis of campaign finance data — and drawn outrage from the left over what it sees as GOP meddling in Democratic contests.” (06/09/24)

15) South Korea: In retaliation against trash balloons, Seoul to restart anti-Pyongyang loudspeaker broadcasts
Source: SFGate

“South Korea says it will restart anti-North Korean propaganda loudspeaker broadcasts in border areas in response to continuing North Korean campaigns to drop trash on the South with balloons. Following an emergency security meeting led by South Korean national security director Chang Ho-jin, the officials decided to install and begin the loudspeaker broadcasts in border areas on Sunday, Seoul’s presidential office said in a statement. The move is certain to anger North Korea and potentially prompt it to take its own retaliatory military steps. Chang and other South Korean security officials berated Pyongyang for attempting to cause ‘anxiety and disruption’ in South Korea and stressed that North Korea will be ‘solely responsible’ for any future escalation of tensions between the Koreas.” (06/07/24)

16) Italy: Meloni puts brakes on solar energy rollout
Source: Financial Times [UK]

“Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has always insisted she is not a climate change denier and that her rightwing government is committed to greener sources of energy. But her coalition is putting the brakes on the rollout of solar panels on farmland, which Meloni has described as a ‘threat to our food sovereignty’ — a claim refuted by some farmers and solar energy experts. The government last month issued an emergency decree banning ground-mounted solar panels from land zoned for agriculture. Instead, Rome will require more costly installations of at least 2.1 metres above ground, to allow cultivation underneath.” (06/08/24)

17) Report: Beyonce gave SCOTUS Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson concert tickets valued at nearly $4,000
Source: Newsweek

“Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson received concert tickets from Beyonce, according to her financial disclosure form. Beyonce provided Jackson with four concert tickets worth a total of $3,711.84, according to the form. The gift was among three she received in 2023 and was properly reported in her annual financial disclosure report. Supreme Court justices have faced increasing scrutiny over gifts in recent years, with a new report released Thursday finding that the justices raked in millions of dollars of gifts throughout the past two decades. Newly released financial disclosure forms revealed new information about gifts received by the U.S. Supreme Court justices. Jackson, the newest judge on the nation’s highest court, disclosed only three gifts. [editor’s note: So it’s not just Alito and Thomas, huh? – SAT] [editor’s note: If you think there’s no difference between a disclosed gift of four tickets to one’s own concert on one hand, and millions of dollars in undisclosed gifts from people with business before the court on the other, that thing you’re doing that you think is thinking isn’t – TLK] (06/08/24)

19) CA: Alameda city council votes to end controversial cloud-brightening research
Source: SFGate

“Alameda’s city council voted this week to permanently halt research being conducted onboard one of the city’s decommissioned naval ships. The project, led by the University of Washington, involved scientists using specialized machines to spray sea salt particles into the air above the USS Hornet. The research was part of a larger push toward someday using salt particles to brighten low-lying clouds, thereby reflecting enough sunlight away from the Earth to decrease the warming effects of climate change. Last month, Alameda ordered researchers to stop the project on the basis that it violated the city’s lease with the USS Hornet. The city then hired biological and hazardous material consultants to evaluate the experiment. The consultants concluded that it presented no measurable risk to the health of the surrounding community or environment.” (06/09/24)

21) No, Biden’s Protectionism Isn’t “All About National Defense”
Source: American Institute for Economic Research
by Donald J Boudreaux

“[I]t’s true that, if Biden’s protectionism is going to be justified, success at such justification is more likely if it rests on national-security grounds than on purely economic grounds, as the economic case for protectionism enjoys no credibility among serious economists. But there’s no reason to conclude that, therefore, Team Biden’s trade policy is chiefly about national defense. Can anyone who is familiar with Joe Biden’s history believe that the man is interested in anything much beyond maximizing Joe Biden’s electoral prospects?” (06/07/24)

“‘The right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.’ See that period at the end there? There are no added exceptions for drug users, or for anyone else. And as Chief Justice John Marshall pointed out in Marbury v. Madison, ‘an act of the legislature, repugnant to the constitution, is void.’ … Hunter Biden may well be guilty of real crimes, but these aren’t real crimes whether the charges accurately describe his actions or not. On the moral side: Whether Hunter Biden used drugs and whether Hunter Biden owned a gun were never any of the US government’s business.” (06/08/24)

23) Let’s make them all convicted felons
Source: Eastern New Mexico News
by Kent McManigal

“The precedent is set. As of May 30, every presidential administration can expect to be convicted of felonies by the next administration from the other party. Congressional members of the opposition party could be convicted, as well. They all commit felonies, most far more real and serious than those for which Donald Trump was convicted. Democratic former presidents and members of Congress should be convicted of felonies as soon as there’s a Republican administration. Nor should the Democratic Party stop with Trump and those who represented him; there’s low-hanging fruit in Congressional Republicans. This presents an opportunity to bring the federal government to a grinding halt.” (06/08/24)

25) What Caused the DC Crime Wave?
Source: Reason
by Joe Bishop-Henchman

“If your image of Washington was shaped by the urban decline of the 1970s, the crack trade of the 1980s, or the municipal bankruptcy of the 1990s, you might not realize that until recently the city has been generally prosperous, growing, and safe. Construction cranes dotted the city as population grew from 572,059 in 2000 to 689,545 in 2020. Neighborhoods that burned in the riots of the 1960s became places to be. Zip codes 20002 and 20003 recently topped the country for new apartment construction. D.C.’s budget went from basket case to record surpluses and rainy day funds, even enabling some income and business tax cuts. What caused this crime spike? Several narratives are competing, some more compelling than others. One year on, there is now strong evidence of two things that didn’t cause it — and two things that did.” (for publication 07/24)

26) Top five insults Joe Biden has lobbed at the American voter
Source: Fox News
by David Marcus

“The late and legendary insult comedian Don Rickles never ran for president, but in Joe Biden we could have a pretty close approximation of what it might have looked like. It started four years ago, with calling voters ‘dog faced pony soldiers,’ or ‘fat,’ or telling them he knew why their wife left them, and the insults haven’t slowed down one bit. Let’s take a look at the top five ways the president is insulting us every day. 1) Hey, Stupid, It’s Not the Economy … At the top of the list of Joe ‘The Insult President’s ridiculous whoppers is his insistence that the economy is great and all of us are just too dumb to notice. … 2) You’re Gonna Pay for Gender Studies Degrees, Jack! 28) Welcoming MAGA to the justice-reform movement
Source: Orange County Register
by Steven Greenhut

“As a general rule in politics and public policy, I’d suggest applying one’s principles as consistently as possible. It’s hard to be taken seriously if, say, you want the feds to prosecute your political opponents on some ill-defined charges – and then complain about the ‘weaponization’ of the justice system when you or your allies are in the dock. Just saying. One of my oft-stated warnings for those, on the Left or Right, who advocate for new laws, more regulation and broader powers for police agencies: First consider how these powers might be wielded in the hands of your enemies. … Now that former President Donald Trump is a convicted felon – and faces other state and federal charges in a variety of prosecutions – the Make America Great Again movement has suddenly discovered the evils of politicized prosecutions, inequities in the justice system and fear of police abuse.” ()6/08/24)

“In March, roughly six months into the war in Gaza, the Journal of Bioethical Inquiry published a paper exploring ‘the possibility of reconciliation – that is, of refiguring relationships to open up a space for dialogue to create pathways to heal the ruptures.’ The study, by Paul Komesaroff, executive director of the group Global Reconciliation, noted that ‘the rich history of partnerships and collaborations between Jews and Palestinians provides a robust infrastructure’ for peace between the two estranged communities. A similar theme resonates in the work of this year’s winner of the Templeton Prize, which highlights discoveries that yield ‘new insights about religion.’ The prestigious award was given to Pumla Gobodo-Madikizela, a South African scholar who has explored ways to nurture deep empathy between victims and perpetrators of conflict.” (06/07/24)

30) A Quiet Belief in Authoritarian Values
Source: EconLog
by Pierre Lemieux

“The ideological certitude with which FTC Commissioner Lina Khan explains her latest investigation of Microsoft is revealing of the zeitgeist of our time. Interviewed by the Wall Street Journal, she explains that Microsoft may have violated antitrust law — or rather policy and politics, because it is not properly law — by consensually hiring the co-founder of startup Inflection AI and almost all its staff, and compensating the ongoing concern with a licensing fee. … ‘In Washington, there is increasingly a recognition that we can’t as a government just be totally hands-off and stand out of the way.’ I wonder at what fleeting moment the young law professor nominated by Joe Biden thinks the federal government was ‘totally hands-off’ and ‘out of the way.'” (06/08/24)

31) We Fight the Same Battles Over and Over Again
Source: Town Hall
by Mark Lewis

“There are simple life truths that apply to most people. A few can defy them, most can’t, and the masses, never. (‘Individuals have conquered themselves. Nations and large bodies of men, never.’ —John Adams) For example: Going downhill is easier than going uphill. Being lazy requires less effort than working hard. Self-control is far more difficult than licentiousness. Lies are believed more readily than truth because lies are more pleasant to human ears and tell us what we want to hear. Being ignorant and stupid is easy and comfortable; gaining knowledge and wisdom demands a supreme struggle. That’s just a few interesting, and undeniable, maxims. The truly virtuous and strong of character can conquer themselves. But, ‘is there any virtue among us?’ James Madison asked. Virtue is hard to obtain and maintain. Some people do it. Most don’t. Nations never for long.” (06/08/24)

32) We need a revolt against the uniparty
Source: spiked
by Tim Black

“After ITV’s dismal Rishi Sunak vs Keir Starmer stand-off on Tuesday, it was the BBC’s turn on Friday evening to punish viewers with an election debate. Featuring the leading figures from the seven biggest parties, including the lone disruptor, Nigel Farage, it certainly promised to be a bit more interesting. It began with Tory sword-carrier Penny Mordaunt criticising her own party leader Rishi Sunak, for his decision to leave the international D-Day commemoration event early. But it soon degenerated into a fractious, unedifying and predictable affair. Much of the blame for this lies with the technocrats of Labour and the Tories. With barely a cigarette paper between the two on anything that matters, their higher-ups seem to have mistaken angry, pointy slanging matches for actual political disagreement.” (06/08/24)

33) Everything About Israel Is Fake
Source: Caitlin Johnstone, Rogue Journalist
by Caitlin Johnstone

“It’s a completely synthetic nation created without any regard for the organic sociopolitical movements of the land and its people, slapped rootless atop an ancient pre-existing civilization with deep roots. That’s why it cannot exist without being artificially propped up by nonstop propaganda, lobbying, online influence operations, and mass military violence. Israel is so fake that its far right minister of national security Itamar Ben-Gvir has been stoking religious tensions by encouraging militant Zionists to pray on the Temple Mount — known to Muslims as Al-Aqsa. This is an illustration of how phony Israel and its political ideology are because Jews were historically prohibited from praying at the Temple Mount under Jewish law; a sign placed there in 1967 and still upheld by Israel’s Chief Rabbinate reads, ‘According to Torah Law, entering the Temple Mount area is strictly forbidden due to the holiness of the site.'” (06/08/24)

“Price controls bring forth not an abundance of low-priced goods to help the poor but shortages of wanted products. Today many people suffer the hardship of government suppression of the building of new houses and apartments. … In any given case, how much influence market forces and nonmarket control have is not an easy question. It takes study rather than dogmatism. However, even political intervention must operate within the law of price.” (06/07/24)

35) Lily Loves Me
Source: Common Sense
by Paul Jacob

“Lily loves me. That’s the good news. I love her, too. Funny thing, though, I don’t even know Lily’s last name. You see, she works at my local Starbucks. She makes a mean flat white. …The bad news — or the other good news — is that she recently hurt my feelings. You see, after my heart attack of a couple months ago, I scaled back my flat white drinking. When I first ordered a tall (that is, a small) instead of my usual venti (large), well, my Starbucks peeps thought there might be a tear in the universe. I explained that I wanted to cut down on my caffeine and milk intake post heart attack. Which immediately got them onboard with my change. … The other day when Lily was delivering my drink, she saw its size and questioned, ‘You’re already back to a venti?’ Ouch!” (06/07/24)

36) Democrats Should Run Against the Supreme Court
Source: Washington Monthly
by David Atkins

“[T]he Court has become deeply unpopular, with over 60 percent of Americans disapproving of its job. This comes at a time when the judiciary arguably has more power over Americans’ lives than at any other time. Research shows that most voters believe the Court is conspiring to protect Trump on his immunity claims and that opportunities exist for candidates to run on opposition and reforms to the Court. The Biden campaign should take note. The president’s standing with voters lags far behind Senate Democrats. The reasons for this are complex, and things could change before November. But right now Democratic policies are popular; Donald Trump and the Supreme Court are not.” (06/07/24)

37) Joe Biden’s D-Day speech was a bitter mockery of Ronald Reagan
Source: New York Post
by Michael Goodwin

“Joe Biden’s trip to France proved two big things: He’s no Ronald Reagan, and he forgot to pack his patriotism. Along the way, he also managed to cheapen historic heroes by trying to score partisan political points with attacks on Donald Trump and House Republicans. Whatever happened to the tradition that partisanship stops at the water’s edge? Other than that, heckuva job, Mr. President. Biden’s visit to Normandy for the 80th anniversary of the D-Day invasion was overshadowed from the start by Reagan’s exceptional speech at the same spot 40 years earlier. Although the contrast must have eaten at Biden, who bitterly opposed almost everything Reagan did and stood for, White House aides used the Gipper’s speech as a guide for Biden’s. That was their first mistake.” (06/08/24)

“How ironic that the son of a Democrat president of the United States is having to pay the price for living in a paternalistic state that his own father ardently supports. Hunter Biden is currently on trial in a U.S. District Court for federal gun-control violations. Waiting in the wings is another federal prosecution for income-tax violations. It’s worth noting that what Biden did would never be considered offenses in a genuinely free society.” (06/07/24)

39) Why Does American Folly March on in Ukraine?
Source: The American Conservative
by James W Carden

“In his memoir, A Life in Our Times, the venerable economist John Kenneth Galbraith noted that he came to view politics not as the ‘art of the possible’ but rather as a choice ‘between the disastrous and the unpalatable.’ As things stand today, a similar choice — between a disastrous escalation or an unpalatable settlement — appears to be the only one on offer for Ukraine. And thanks to a number of developments over the course of the past two weeks, it is becoming clear that Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky and his sponsors in Washington are increasingly intent on choosing the former over the latter — even as it has come to light, courtesy of a May 24 report from Reuters, that Putin himself ‘is ready to halt the war in Ukraine with a negotiated ceasefire that recognizes the current battlefield lines.'” (06/07/24)

40) Cartoonish claims about nuclear war scenario are unhelpful
Source: Responsible Statecraft
by Matthew Petti

“The supervillain theory of geopolitics, in which America’s enemies are plotting to destroy the world for fun, doesn’t make sense. China, Russia, and North Korea all oppose the U.S.-led world order due to their specific national interests. For all of those countries, nuclear weapons are the ultimate life insurance policy. The real danger posed by North Korea lies in the Kim dynasty’s rational fears; they know that they are quite vulnerable to both internal and external enemies, so their threat calculus likely leaves little room for error.” (06/07/24)

41) Interview: What’s at Stake in the 2024 European Parliament Elections?
Source: Common Dreams
by Alexandra Boutri

“Europeans go to polls this week to vote for parliament. What is at stake? Is the future of the European Union at risk on account of the surge of the far right? But is the E.U. even a democratic institution worth saving? And why is the left in crisis across Europe? Political economist and political scientist C. J. Polychroniou tackles these questions in an interview with the French-Greek independent journalist Alexandra Boutri. Boutri: Elections for the European parliament are taking place this week from Thursday 6 June to Sunday 10 June. Some 373 million citizens across the 27 members of the E.U. are eligible to vote, but it remains to be seen whether the ‘surge’ in participation in 2019 will continue in 2024. Let’s talk about participation in the world’s only transnational elections because the general impression is that Europeans do not take the European Parliament (EP) elections very seriously.” (06/08/24)

42) Trump’s Whining About a “Rigged” Judiciary Is Ridiculous
Source: The Daily Beast
by Ray Brescia

“Minutes after a jury of Donald Trump’s peers found him guilty on all 34 felony counts, the former president trotted out the same tired line about the system being rigged that he seems to air whenever he loses, whether it’s a court case, an election, or even at the Emmy Awards. For Trump and his allies, those complaints are generally reserved for judges and juries and voters when things don’t go his way. But that’s not how the law, or the rule of law, works. What Trump really means when he says something is rigged is that he lost.” (06/07/24)

44) “He’s using tools that Donald Trump used”: How Joe Biden became a border hawk
Source: Semafor
by David Weigel

“The long and agonizing climb-down from their 2020 ambitions may be the defining story of the Biden-era Democratic Party. On border policy, the Emma Lazarus mindset of the Trump years has vanished; a president who once summoned his inner Irish poet when talking about asylum seekers has now ordered that migrants ‘detrimental to the interests of the United States’ can be kept out. … The promise to humanely welcome asylum seekers was always premised on a surge of resources necessary to process a historic number of arrivals at the Southern border — money and manpower the GOP has blocked. Democrats have not entirely flipped on immigration; the party still favors work status and legalization for noncitizens. But they now find themselves with little leverage to demand those policies in a trade with Republicans while the border weighs on Biden’s polls.” (06/07/24)

45) Dems, media fool no one: White House is knee-deep in Trump prosecutions
Source: New York Post
by Victor Davis Hanson

“The five criminal and civil prosecutions of former President Donald Trump all prompt heated denials from Democrats that President Joe Biden and Democrat operatives had a role in any of them. But Biden has long let it be known that he was frustrated with his own Justice Department’s federal prosecutors for their tardiness in indicting Trump. Biden was upset because any delay might mean that his rival Trump would not be in federal court during the 2024 election cycle. And that would mean he could not be tagged as a ‘convicted felon’ by the November election while being kept off the campaign trail.” (06/08/24)

46) Narcissistic Personality Disorder in the USA
Source: CounterPunch
by Kathleen Wallace

“What to do when your home country fits all the criteria in the DSM-5 for Narcissistic Personality Disorder? That’s a tough one. If a nation can allow corporations to be persons, I think it is only fair that the nation itself be subject to the same mental scrutiny that a person behaving in a deranged manner would be exposed to. What makes a healthy person? What makes a healthy nation? These are questions that need to be considered to avoid the kind of destruction that typically comes from narcissistic injury and the subsequent lashing out that follows when a narcissist no longer gets his or her way. There are nine basic criteria used to diagnose the personality disorder, and I would argue that the United States currently meets all of them.” (06/07/24)

47) The “Worst Fiscal Blunder” in US Treasury History
Source: Independent Institute
by Craig Eyermann

“On Halloween 2023, hedge fund manager Stanley Druckenmiller identified what he called the ‘worst fiscal blunder’ in the history of the U.S. Treasury. That blunder occurred in the early months of the Biden administration and accelerated the U.S. government’s unsustainable fiscal path. … Missing that obvious opportunity in early 2021 to lock in low interest rates for the large amount of debt the U.S. government had accumulated at that point in time is a massive blunder. But the administration’s fiscal mismanagement didn’t stop there. The costs of that bureaucratic failure will be felt for years to come.” (06/07/24)

48) Congestion Pricing Gets Crowded Out
Source: The Dispatch
by Kevin D Williamson

“The thing about America is, it is full of Americans. Even in Manhattan, where, in spite of what you might have heard, the local political realities are not so different from what they are in the rest of the country. New York had a big idea — it was going to impose ‘congestion pricing,’ meaning a $15 daily fee for anybody who wanted to drive a car in Manhattan below 60th Street. Gov. Kathy Hochul …
was talking up the plan only a couple of weeks ago at some globaloney conference in Ireland — and, of course, she has now killed the proposal. Why? Because New York — and New Jersey, and Connecticut, and neighboring states beyond — are positively full of Americans, and Americans do not want to pay $15 to drive their cars south of the Plaza.” (06/07/24)

49) Affordable-Housing Hurdle: Homeowners Want Housing Prices to Go Up
Source: American Prospect
by David Dayen

“The activist groups Right to the City and the Center for Popular Democracy have new polling out showing a giant number of those surveyed (87 percent) believing that the cost of housing is a major or big problem, as well as significant support for their policy preferences: rent stabilization and more funding to build affordable-housing units. In Congress, Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-DE), who is about to become a senator, and Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) released a bill based on their preferences: helping communities roll back restrictive zoning requirements by establishing federal standards and guidelines, along with a relatively modest set of grants for housing development. Regardless of what framework you think makes the most sense, tackling the housing shortage in America is an imperative to tame the cost of living, promote community development, reduce financial stress, and even reduce carbon emissions.” (06/07/24)
