1)  Russia: Regime to supply nuclear-capable missiles to puppet state Belarus
Source: CNN

"Russia will transfer nuclear-capable Iskander-M missile systems to its [satrapy] Belarus over the coming months, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Saturday. Putin told Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko at a meeting in St. Petersburg the missile systems 'can use both ballistic and cruise missiles, both in conventional and nuclear versions,' according to the Kremlin. Russia launched its February 24 invasion in part from Belarusian territory, which borders Ukraine to the north. Throughout the war, Moscow has used Minsk as a satellite base including for many of Russia's air operations in Ukraine, according to intelligence collected by NATO surveillance planes. On Saturday, Ukraine claimed Russian forces had fired multiple missiles on the Kyiv, Chernihiv and Sumy regions from Belarus." (06/26/22)

2)  US firms pledge to pay staff travel expenses for abortions
Source: BBC News [UK state media]

"Major companies including Disney, JP Morgan and Facebook owner Meta have told staff they will cover employee travel expenses for abortions, as millions of US women face restricted access. It follows a landmark ruling by the US Supreme Court that overturned the constitutional right to abortion. The judgement paves the way for individual states to ban the procedure. Other firms, such as Amazon, had already announced similar moves. But since the ruling a growing number of companies have confirmed they will cover travel costs through their health insurance plans for employees who leave their home state to get an abortion. Disney said it had told employees it recognised the impact of the Supreme Court ruling and remained committed to giving them 'comprehensive access' to affordable healthcare, including family planning and reproductive care, 'no matter where they live.'" 3)  Turkey: Regime thugs block Istanbul Pride parade, abduct dozens
Source: Reuters

"Turkish police blocked hundreds of people from gathering for Istanbul's annual Pride parade on Sunday and detained dozens after local authorities banned the march from going ahead again this year. Thousands of people used to attend Pride marches on Istanbul's main Istiklal Avenue but in recent years the government led by President Tayyip Erdogan and his Islamist-rooted AK Party has toughened its stance on LGBTQ+ freedom. Homosexuality is not a crime in Turkey, but hostility to it is widespread and the police crackdown on the parades have been increasingly tougher over the years." ()6/26/22)

4)  Biden signs unconstitutional victim disarmament bill
Source: CNBC

"President Joe Biden signed the nation's most significant [victim disarmament] bill in decades into law early Saturday after years of stalled efforts to tighten gun laws. Biden's signature comes just a day after House legislatures passed the bipartisan bill in an effort to restrict gun access for the youngest buyers, domestic violence offenders and others who could pose a risk to their communities. The Bipartisan Safer Communities Act also would fund school safety and mental health programs." (06/25/22)

5)  Iran: Regime launches rocket into space as nuclear talks to resume
Source: Associated Press

"Iranian state television said Sunday that Tehran had launched a solid-fueled rocket into space, drawing a rebuke from Washington ahead of the expected resumption of stalled talks over Tehran's tattered nuclear deal with world powers. It's unclear when or where the rocket was launched, but the announcement came after satellite photos showed preparations at Imam Khomeini Spaceport in Iran's rural Semnan province, the site of Iran's frequent failed attempts to put a satellite into orbit." 6)  SC: Legislators to consider $53 million in vetoed local projects
Source: US News & World Report

"The South Carolina General Assembly is returning to Columbia on Tuesday to consider nearly $53 million in local projects that Gov. Henry McMaster wants out of the $13.8 billion state budget. All the money went toward items put in by lawmakers for local concerns, like $25 million to help pay for a quantum computer facility in Columbia, $7 million for a cultural welcome center in Orangeburg and $500,000 to improve the stadium at Summerville High School. McMaster allowed projects where lawmakers detailed exactly who got the money and where it was going. 'Without sufficient context, description, justification or information regarding the project and how the recipient intends to spend the funds, the public cannot evaluate the earmark's merit,' McMaster wrote in his vetoes on Wednesday." 7)  AZ: Grand Canyon won't seek volunteers to kill bison this fall
Source: SFGate

"A bison herd that lives almost exclusively in the northern reaches of Grand Canyon National Park won't be targeted for lethal removal there this fall. The park used skilled volunteers selected through a highly competitive and controversial lottery last year to kill bison, part of a toolset to downsize the herd that's been trampling meadows and archaeological sites on the canyon's North Rim. Introducing the sound of gunfire and having people close to the bison was meant to nudge the massive animals back to the adjacent forest where they legally could be hunted. But the efforts had little effect. 'They just kind of moved a bit from where the activity occurred, and sometimes they'd come back the next day,' said Grand Canyon wildfire program manager Greg Holm." (06/26/22)

8)  Ukraine: Russian missiles hit residential buildings in Kyiv
Source: Al Jazeera [Qatar state media]

"Russian missiles have hit residential buildings in Kyiv, wounding five people and burying others under rubble, in the first such attack on the Ukrainian capital in nearly three weeks. A fire broke out in a nine-storey residential building that was partially damaged in the attack in the central Shevchenkivskiy district, the emergency services said on Sunday. ... There had been no major attacks on Kyiv since June 5, when Russia targeted a factory on the city's outskirts and injured one person. At the end of April, a Ukrainian journalist from Radio Liberty was killed in her apartment by a Russian attack on Kyiv during a visit by UN chief Antonio Guterres." (06/26/22)

9)  WA: Man arrested after reportedly making social media threat to blow up elementary school
Source: Fox News

"Authorities arrested a Washington man on Tuesday after he allegedly threatened to blow up an elementary school. Thomas Gabbard, 19, had previously gone on Instagram Live, where he claimed to be a gang member. However, a viewer on the stream insisted that Gabbard was not, to which the suspect responded he was 'going to pull up and bomb a school,' police said. No school or location was specified during the stream. Gabbard, however, proceeded to claim he had bombs in his possession. The viewer became concerned and called the local police regarding Gabbard's threats. The viewer also told police Gabbard called him using the phone number on the viewer's account. He told police the call lasted approximately two minutes, during which time he tried to get information from Gabbard on the unnamed school he had previously referenced." (06/26/22)

10) South Africa: Police investigate nightclub deaths
Source: BBC News [UK state media]

"South African authorities are investigating the deaths of at least 22 young people in a nightclub. The victims were found strewn across floors and tables the Enyobeni Tavern in the coastal town of East London. The bodies were taken to mortuaries, where post-mortem examinations (including toxicology tests) will seek to establish a cause of death. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa expressed his 'deepest condolences' to families of the victims. 'This tragedy is made even more grave by its occurrence during Youth Month -- a time during which we ... advocate and advance opportunities for improved socio-economic conditions for the youth of our nation,' he said in a tweet. Oscar Mabuyane, premier of East Cape Province where the tragedy happened, did not give possible reasons for the deaths, but condemned the 'unlimited consumption of liquor.'" (06/26/22)

11) Ecuador: Opposition lawmakers push to remove president after protests
Source: Reuters

"A group of opposition lawmakers in Ecuador are pushing for the removal of conservative President Guillermo Lasso after nearly two weeks of mass protests led by indigenous groups demanding lower fuel and food prices, though other legislators say they will not back his ouster. The sometimes-violent demonstrations, which began on June 13, have led to at least six civilian deaths and featured multiple attacks on security forces. The protests have worsened Lasso's already-adversarial relationship with the national assembly, whose lawmakers have blocked his major economic proposals as he has struggled to contain rising violence he blames on drug gangs." 12) MSNBC snowflake whines about Biden's continued opposition to court packing
Source: Common Dreams

"President Joe Biden was rebuked Saturday for doubling down on his opposition to expanding the U.S. Supreme Court even after its deeply unpopular right-wing majority spent the past week ending the constitutional right to abortion care, weakening gun restrictions, undermining the separation of church and state, and eroding hard-won civil rights, with more attacks on equality and federal regulatory power expected. 'That is something that the president does not agree with,' White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters when asked about the possibility of court expansion. 'That is not something that he wants to do.' MSNBC host Mehdi Hasan called the president's lack of urgency 'ridiculous,' 'infuriating' and 'inexplicable.' 'What does Biden 'agree' with doing?' Hasan asked on social media. 'What does the leader of this country want to do to stop the increasingly fascistic assault on our democratic institutions and basic rights?'" (06/26/22)

13) SD: Bar abortion pills, but don't punish women for them, says idiot pol
Source: SFGate

"South Dakota's Republican governor pledged on Sunday to bar mail-order abortion pills but said women should not face prosecution for seeking them. In apparent defiance of legal guidance by the Justice Department after the Supreme Court last week stripped away women's constitutional protections for abortion, Kristi Noem indicated in national television interviews that she would put in place a plan approved by state lawmakers to restrict the pills. The majority ruling Friday by the court's conservative justices triggered abortion bans in South Dakota and elsewhere. But Noem said doctors, not their patients, would likely be prosecuted for knowing violations of what would be one of the strictest laws on abortion pills in the United States. 'I don't believe women should ever be prosecuted,' she said. 'I don't believe there should be any punishment for women, ever, that are in a crisis situation or have an unplanned pregnancy.'" Democratic state Senate candidate Jennifer Rourke, the chairwoman of the Rhode Island Political Cooperative, on Saturday morning tweeted video of the alleged assault. 'I'm a reproductive rights organizer & State Senate candidate. Last night, after speaking at our Roe rally, my Republican opponent -- a police officer -- violently attacked me. 15) NY: NYC prosecutors flee in droves over not getting to do whatever the hell they want anymore
Source: Fox News

"Hundreds of prosecutors in New York City are quitting the district attorneys' offices amid controversial criminal justice reforms. Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg's office this year has hemorrhaged 65 assistant district attorneys, which is about 12% of the staff. Bragg released a memo on his third day in office, ordering prosecutors not to seek prison sentences for a number of crimes and to downgrade charges -- including for robberies and commercial burglaries. Manhattan's situation mirrors that of Brooklyn, where 67 prosecutors (approximately 13%) have resigned from DA Eric Gonzalez's office as of June 17, with three more leaving last Thursday alone, according to the New York Post. In 2020, 84 resigned, and 94 left office in 2021. Fifty-nine prosecutors have quit in the Bronx beginning this year through May." (06/26/22)

16) CO: Pregnancy center fire investigated as arson
Source: The Hill

"Colorado police and the FBI are investigating a fire at a pregnancy center early Saturday morning as arson after finding graffiti and threatening messages scrawled on the Denver-area building. The fire broke out at Life Choices in the city of Longmont around 3:17 a.m., police wrote in a Facebook post. The facility 'sustained fire and heavy smoke damage' but no injuries were reported. The fire came hours after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, the 1973 case precedent that had established abortion as a constitutional right. ... Photos submitted by Longmont Public Safety showed the pregnancy center was vandalized with black paint in several areas. One message on the side of the building read: 'if abortions aren't safe neither are you,' while another written on the sidewalk read: 'BANS OFF OUR BODIES.'" (06/26/22)

17) UK: Regime joins ban on imports of Russian gold
Source: BBC News [UK state media]

"The UK, US, Canada and Japan will ban imports of Russian gold in an effort to hit Moscow's ability to fund the war in Ukraine. The UK PM said the move would 'strike at the heart of Putin's war machine'. Gold exports were worth £12.6bn ($15.4bn) to Russia in 2021, and the UK says their importance has increased since the invasion as oligarchs rush to buy bullion to avoid sanctions. It comes as the G7 group of the world's richest nations meet in Germany. US President Biden suggested the other G7 nations (Germany, France and Italy) would also join the ban. 'Together, the G7 will announce that we will ban the import of Russian gold, a major export that rakes in tens of billions of dollars for Russia,' he said in a tweet." (06/26/22)

18) France: Macron asks Borne to propose new government
Source: France 24 [French state media]

"French President Emmanuel Macron has asked Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne to propose a new 'government of action' that will be named in early July, according to an interview with AFP. ... Macron, who spoke to Borne on Saturday, announced that he had instructed her next week to sound out the political groups in the National Assembly on a number of issues. They included their possible participation in a government, their position on a vote of confidence in Borne herself on July 5, and also on the vote on the state budget next autumn. ... [Macron's] centrist alliance finished Sunday's parliamentary elections 44 seats short of an overall majority in the National Assembly, as a new left-wing coalition and the far right made major gains." 19) NASA Forced To Scrap Planned 2022 Launch of Psyche Asteroid Mission
Source: SciTechDaily

"NASA announced on Friday, June 24, 2022, that the Psyche asteroid mission, the agency's first mission designed to study a metal-rich asteroid, will not make its planned 2022 launch attempt. Due to the late delivery of the spacecraft's flight software and testing equipment, NASA lacks sufficient time to complete the testing required ahead of its remaining launch period this year, which ends on October 11. The mission team needs additional time to ensure that the software will function properly in flight. ... The mission's 2022 launch period, which ran from August 1 through October 11, would have allowed the spacecraft to arrive at the asteroid Psyche in 2026. There are possible launch periods in both 2023 and 2024, but the relative orbital positions of Psyche and Earth mean the spacecraft would not arrive at the asteroid until 2029 and 2030, respectively." 20) Court halts FDA's "protect oncologists' jobs from Juul" order
Source: The Guardian [UK]

"Juul can continue to sell its electronic cigarettes, at least for now, after a federal appeals court on Friday temporarily blocked a government ban. Juul filed an emergency motion earlier Friday, seeking the temporary hold while it appeals the sales ban. The e-cigarette maker had asked the court to pause what it called an 'extraordinary and unlawful action' by the Food and Drug Administration that would have required it to immediately halt its business. The FDA said on Thursday that Juul must stop selling its vaping device and its tobacco and menthol flavored cartridges. ... A three-judge panel of the US circuit court of appeals granted Juul's request for a hold while the court reviews the case." (06/24/22)

21) Abortion: No, Dobbs Isn't "Decentralization"
Source: Garrison Center
by Thomas L Knapp

"Decentralization is the notion that decisions should be made at the 'lowest' possible level of government. Don't let Congress decide if a state legislature can decide; don't let a state legislature decide if a county commission can decide; don't let a county commission decide if a city council can decide;  don't let a city council decide if individuals can decide. I'm pretty fond of decentralization myself. But the Dobbs ruling is exactly the opposite of decentralization. Per Roe, decisions concerning abortion were largely decentralized to the lowest possible level, that of individual choice. Agree with the logic of the decision or not, that was its effect. Per Dobbs, such decisions are now largely centralized into the hands of state legislatures." (06/25/22)

22) Open Borders: The Libertarian Argument
Source: Ideas
by David Friedman

"The traditional libertarian position, the position I argued for in my first book, is support for open borders. That was also the traditional American policy. ... Murray Rothbard switched his position from opposing restrictions on immigration to supporting them as part of his adoption of a paleolibertarian strategy of alliance with the right, followed by Hans Hoppe and others. In trying to understand their argument, I have used two sources, an article by Hoppe and a webbed debate between Dave Smith, a prominent figure in the libertarian party and the Mises Caucus that currently controls it, and Spike Cohen, the most recent vice presidential nominee of the LP." 23) Moralism and Contemporary Politics
Source: ProSocial Libertarians
by Andrew Jason Cohen

"People have asked me why I seem so focused on moralism. There are multiple reasons, including having too much personal experience with people who operate as moralists, but what it really comes down to is that if we take moralism broadly to be a view that we should use the machinery of law to impose a moral view on the jurisdiction, most people in politics today are moralists. ... On the right, we we have what are called 'common good constitutionalists' or 'common good conservatives' who basically say we should interpret the Constitution of the United States of America in such a way that will get us the common good of society. Of course, what they mean by 'the common good' follows from their conservative beliefs .... On the left, you see basically the same thing without the claim made explicit." (06/24/22)

24) Dobbs Won't End the Legal Battle Over Abortion
Source: The Volokh Conspiracy
by Ilya Somin

"In a famous passage in his dissent in Planned Parenthood v. Casey, the 1992 case that (mostly) reaffirmed Roe v. Wade, Justice Antonin Scalia chided the majority for believing 'they are bringing to an end a troublesome era in the history of our Nation and of our Court.' He predicted -- correctly as it turned out -- that the Court's ruling would actually 'prolong and intensif[y]' conflict over the issue of abortion. Today, knowledgeable conservatives probably recognize that that the reversal of Casey and Roe in Dobbs won't put an end to the political struggle over abortion. At least in the short to medium term, it is likely to actually intensify it. But they may hope it will at least put an end to legal battles over abortion's status under the Constitution. If so, they are likely to be disappointed on that front." (06/26/22)

25) Just when they're needed, libertarians take detour
Source: Orange County Register
by Steven Greenhut

"The Libertarian Party has always been a place where liberty's staunchest defenders argue about the most-pressing issues facing Americans: Should individuals be free to buy nuclear warheads? Should we tolerate purchase-age limits after we legalize heroin? Is there anything really wrong with child labor? Do we eliminate 99% or 100% of the federal government? ... As the saying goes about academia, 'The politics are so vicious because the stakes are so small.' This year's convention was unusually bitter, with insurgents from the Mises [PAC] wresting control of the party and installing their chair, Angela McArdle. This might seem like one of those military battles over a pointless hill, but it points to the future of the libertarian movement." (06/24/22)

26) The Leak, the Threats: Reaction to Roe Is Dark Day for US
Source: New York Post
by Glenn Reynolds

"The Supreme Court's decision in Dobbs v. Jackson is a victory for the rule of law. I'm not talking so much about the opinion itself. I'm talking about the Supreme Court majority's demonstration that it will do what it thinks is right despite unprecedented pressure from the media, from Democrats in Congress, from 'activist' groups and even from angry mobs and attempted assassins who show up at their homes. This is a big deal. When, as reported by Jan Crawford, a coordinated bullying campaign flipped Chief Justice John Roberts' position in NFIB v. Sebelius, the ObamaCare case from 2012, many observers, especially on the right, lost faith in the court's independence. And the perception that the court could be bullied, naturally, was a guarantee that people would try bullying it again." (06/24/22)

Source: National Review

"Here's a thought experiment for you: You know a guy who is not especially bright and not especially responsible. He has a good job, but he refuses to put anything away for retirement. You ask him: 'Bob, what are you going to do about your retirement?' And Bob says: 'No problem -- I'm going to win the lottery.' And then, a few weeks after his 65th birthday, Bob wins a $400 million lottery jackpot. ... Is expecting to win the lottery a responsible way to plan for your retirement? Answer: Don't be a goddamned jackass. Of course not. ... the Dobbs decision does not make me regret opposing Donald Trump in 2016. Donald Trump was, until he decided he wanted the Republican presidential nomination, an across-the-board social progressive ..." (06/25/22)

"Suppose the majority of the voters are in favor of slavery or that they are at least willing to accept it in return for something else as part of political bargaining. Or suppose that, in order to reduce murders by 39%, a majority of American voters wanted to jail all young males from their 17th birthday until they turn 25. Should the political system be responsive to this? Many people, including libertarians, classical liberals, and your humble blogger, would answer no. What other people mean when they say that the political system should be responsive is that it should be responsive to what they want. Libertarians and classical liberals believe that the political system should not be responsive to majority demands on certain issues." (06/25/22)

30) Why Supreme Court abortion decision empowers women
Source: Fox News
by Erin Hawley

"Every newspaper in America is writing about the remaking of American law surrounding abortion as a result of the Supreme Court's historic decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization case. But it's not only law that's being remade, it's our national perspective on motherhood. This case finally reverses Roe v. Wade, the 1973 decision in which seven male justices put forth a dim view of motherhood, saying it 'forced' on women 'a distressful life and future.' All mothers know that's a demeaning and untrue picture, and now, with the Dobbs decision, the damage of that devastating lie can be undone. A post-Roe America can be one that protects unborn children and empowers their mothers. I had the privilege of serving as counsel to Mississippi in Dobbs. My daughter was about six months old when I was asked to help with the case." (06/26/22)

31) We need to fight for our right to gamble
Source: spiked
by Jason Reed

"When Boris Johnson became prime minister back in 2019, you could have been forgiven for thinking a new age of libertarianism was dawning. During his campaign for the Conservative leadership, he promised to use his premiership to roll back 'the continuing creep of the nanny state.' Even as the Covid pandemic first loomed, Johnson hailed Britain as a 'land of liberty.' In the years since then, we have given more ground to state paternalism than ever before. The Covid pandemic redrew the boundaries of what constitutes a reasonable government intervention. Suddenly, there was no limit on how the state could restrict our personal and private lives, especially in the name of public health. ... It was only a matter of time, then, before both the government and the ever-inflating public-health lobby turned their attention to gambling." (06/26/22)

"This week, the US Senate began debate on a bipartisan gun control package supporters have labeled a 'compromise' bill. Earlier this month, Democrats announced they had obtained enough Republican support for legislation to get it out of the Senate. ... While supporters of this legislation are presumably well-meaning, it is mostly misguided. And while there is little indication these agenda items would actually prevent violence or save lives, there's plenty of evidence to indicate they would deter vulnerable people from seeking mental health treatment." "During the winter of 2021, journalist Virginia Heffernan sheltered from COVID in her upstate New York getaway. After a heavy snow, she was astonished when her Trump-supporting neighbor plowed her driveway. One could conclude that her neighbor saw an unprepared individual in need and acted with decency and kindness. In her opinion essay for the Los Angeles Times, Heffernan revealed her tribal thinking as she weighed whether to offer thanks to her neighbor. ... She tells us nothing of her neighbor other than he is a good snow plower and a 'Trumpite.' Her neighbor saw her humanity; she saw him through her labels. A simple act of kindness from a neighbor became an opportunity for Virginia Heffernan to express her tribal prejudices." (06/26/22)

34) The Founders Predicted our Economic Crisis
Source: Tenth Amendment Center
by Michael Boldin

"Did Thomas Jefferson call the economic crisis? 'Every thing predicted by the enemies of banks, in the beginning, is now coming to pass. we are to be ruined now by the deluge of bank paper as we were formerly by the old Continental paper.' That's from a letter to Thomas Cooper in January 1814. And while it sure seems to apply today, Jefferson was actually observing -- and predicting -- the depression of 1815-21, and the Panic of 1819. While the 1815 panic was considered the start of several years of just mild depression, a major financial crisis -- the Panic of 1819 -- followed. It featured widespread foreclosures, bank failures, unemployment, a collapse in real estate prices, and a slump in agriculture and manufacturing. In other words, Jefferson called it." (06/25/22)

35) Hypocrisies and Successes at UN Meeting to Ban Nuclear Weapons
Source: Common Dreams
by John LaForge

"The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons has been ratified by 65 governments, known in diplomatic circles as States Parties. The treaty's first Meeting of States Parties (1MSP) concluded here June 23, after painstakingly working out (in the words of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons) 'a blueprint for the end of nuclear weapons'. The new Treaty is the extraordinary, crowning achievement of ICAN, which won the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize for its efforts. At 1MSP, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany -- all three of whom use U.S. nuclear weapons on their air force bases -- participated as Observer States. The three have not ratified the TPNW, having acquiesced with a string of U.S. administrations (Obama's, Trump's, and Biden's) that conspired at every opportunity to derail, prevent, delay, weaken, and boycott the new ban -- in spite of broad public support for nuclear disarmament." 36) The Constitution Is Whatever the Right Wing Says It Is
Source: The Atlantic
by Adam Serwer

"The Supreme Court's decision overturning Roe v. Wade, allowing state governments to force women to give birth, is the result of decades of right-wing political advocacy, organizing, and electoral victory. It is also just the beginning of the Court's mission to reshape all of American society according to conservative demands, without fear of public opposition. ... Neal Katyal, the former Obama-administration acting solicitor general, wrote, 'Gonna be very weird if Supreme Court ends a constitutional right to obtain an abortion next week, saying it should be left to the States to decide, right after it just imposed a constitutional right to concealed carry of firearms, saying it cannot be left to the States to decide.' Well, no, that's only weird if you assume that the right-wing majority's intention is to consistently apply legal principles rather than to translate right-wing cultural identity into law." Admittedly, they were not that stable of a group to begin with, so driving them crazy didn't require much gas. That having been said, even 2 years after he left office, Donald Trump's legacy is peeing in the Cornflakes of committed progressives from coast to coast, and it's a glorious thing. You may not be into schadenfreude the way I am, and for when normal people suffer I don't recommend it. "There is something deeply wrong with our foreign policy when the hardline and wildly unrepresentative views of a relatively small number of voters in one state can effectively dictate our policy towards a country of more than 30 million people. Broad U.S. sanctions in Venezuela are predictably very unpopular there because they have made the already bad conditions in the country much worse while further entrenching Maduro. Granting significant sanctions relief would primarily benefit ordinary people that have been forced to bear the burden of these sanctions for years. There is also an obvious American interest right now in bringing more oil back on the market and allowing Venezuela to export to the United States once again. Both Americans and Venezuelans stand to benefit from sanctions relief." (06/24/22)

41) Why Studying Economics Instills Gratitude
Source: Independent Institute
by Caleb S Fuller

"At least since Thomas Carlyle's infamous put-down of economics as the 'dismal science' (for economists having the temerity to oppose slavery), it has been popular to disparage economics as a discipline that fosters depression on the one hand and narrow self-interest on the other. Perhaps the two are linked, says the critic. My own experience with economics has been quite contrary to these allegations. Studying economics instilled in me a profound sense of gratitude. When you're grateful for something, you are appreciative of benefits you have received, says the Oxford English Dictionary." (06/24/22)

42) Getting Real About the Post-"Roe" World
Source: The American Prospect
by Scott Lemieux

"The Supreme Court has overruled Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey. The ending of the 49-year period in which a woman had a federally protected right to terminate a pregnancy before fetal viability was inevitable as soon as Amy Coney Barrett replaced Ruth Bader Ginsburg on the Court. But while denial about the outcome is now functionally impossible, complacency about what overruling Roe means remains a potentially dangerous problem. Fighting the coming onslaught of the coercive policing of women's bodies requires being clear-eyed about what will happen when Roe is overruled, some of which is indeed already happening. Complacency about what a post-Roe world will look like has long been something of a cottage industry among pundits and commenters, predominantly from affluent men in blue-state urban areas who are least likely to be directly affected by the abrogation of reproductive rights." 43) Get Ready for the Post-Roe Sex Police!
Source: Reason
by Nick Gillespie

"The equation of abortion with murder may be ahistorical (more on that in a moment), but now that Roe has been overturned, such a belief has profound implications for the people living in the 26 states that are likely to ban most, if not all, abortions. If life does indeed begin at conception, then the state has an affirmative duty to protect all zygotes (fertilized eggs), blastocysts (week-old zygotes), and embryos (zygotes implanted on the uterine wall). From a libertarian perspective, the implications of such a shift are staggering. This is a recipe not for limited government but for one that must, in the name of protecting life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, surveil and track all acts of potential procreation." Such is the mandate of the US government best expressed by the recent piece of gun legislation that garnered Republican support and made it through the Senate yesterday. The Executive and Legislative branches are both hostage to the 'do something, anything' attitude. Fortunately, the courts are not, and the two recent rulings from the Supreme Court make this distinction clear. You probably know by now, but just before I hit send on this newsletter, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in a monumental decision ending the constitutional right to abortion. 47) Why did Biden take so long to reverse Trump's landmine rule?
Source: Responsible Statecraft
by Daniel Larison

"This week, the Biden administration reversed Trump-era rules on the production and use of anti-personnel landmines in a belated fulfillment of a campaign pledge to return to the earlier restrictions put in place by President Obama in 2014. The decision to bring the United States closer to the international consensus on the prohibition of landmines was the result of a slow, lengthy policy review process initiated in the first weeks of Biden's presidency. Unlike some other Biden administration reviews including the review of sanctions policy, this one delivered a meaningful change. ... It remains puzzling that it took his administration almost 17 months to do something that they could have done more than a year ago." (06/24/22)

49) Imperial Narrative Control Has Five Distinct Elements
Source: Caitlin Johnstone, Rogue Journalist
by Caitlin Johnstone

"All of our world's worst problems are created by the powerful. The powerful will keep creating those problems until ordinary people use their superior numbers to make them stop. Ordinary people don't use their superior numbers to stop the powerful because the powerful are continuously manipulating people's understanding of what's going on. Humans are storytelling creatures. If you can control the stories humans are telling themselves about the world, you control the humans, and you control the world. Mental narrative plays a hugely prominent role in human experience; if you've ever tried to still your mind in meditation you know exactly what I'm talking about. Babbling thought stories dominate our experience of reality. It makes sense then that if you can influence those stories, you're effectively influencing someone's experience of reality." (06/24/22)

50) The Tragedy of the Unwanted Child: What Ancient Cultures Did Before Abortion
Source: Quillette
by Rob Brooks

"Many self-declared 'pro-lifers' consider the termination of a pregnancy the moral equivalent of taking a newborn life. Their strategies, including the endless debates over when a fetus becomes viable, seek to blur distinctions between aborting a fetus and killing a newborn child. So much so that few on the pro-choice side welcome discussion about the relationship between abortion and infanticide. I argue here that an understanding of that relationship -- drawing on evidence from centuries of history and millennia of evolution -- leads to the conclusion that abortion is the most humane alternative to infanticide, adding to the case for safe, legal, accessible abortion for women who need it." 52) A Gas Holiday Might Be Popular, But It's Unlikely To Do Much To Lower Inflation
Source: FiveThirtyEight
by Monica Potts & Zoha Qamar

"Earlier this week President Biden asked Congress to temporarily suspend collection of federal gas and diesel taxes for three months as a way to relieve pressure on Americans as national gas prices rise to $5 a gallon. If the price keeps going up, it could top highs not seen since the summer of 2008. High gas prices are also helping to drive overall inflation, which reached 8.6 percent as of May. It's no surprise, then, that Biden is responding to pressure to do something -- anything -- about gas prices. ... That said, some experts worry that a gas holiday could make inflation worse by increasing demand, and it would need to be approved by Congress regardless." (06/24/22)

And the next five years bring with them a calendar logic that is hard to ignore. For China, the year 2027 will be the 100th anniversary of the People's Liberation Army, just as it would likely mark the conclusion of Xi's expected third five-year term in power. 55) It's Okay To Like Electric Vehicles
Source: The American Conservative
by Michael Fumento

"Conservatives tend to dislike electric vehicles, or E.V.s. There are pretty good reasons for that. For one, environmentalists love them and usually environmentalists are wrong. If only all decision-making were so easy. Another is that we're, well, conservative. Internal combustion (I.C.) vehicles are not 'broken' by our standards (viz., most of us don't care about 'carbon footprints' since, at some or several levels, we're skeptical about anthropogenic global warming) so why fix them? ... To be sure, environmentalists and E.V. supporters generally want you to believe they are superior in many important respects today. Were that true, why the subsidies and mandates? Ipso facto, on the whole E.V.s of today are inferior. But that will change, and for some purposes, they're already ahead of I.C. cars." (06/24/22)
