1)  Putin to NATO: Knock off the BS or face “military-technical” measures
Source: Deutsche Welle [Germany]

“Russian President Vladimir Putin threatened a ‘military-technical’ reaction to NATO as he accused the US of an ‘aggressive’ approach to Ukraine. Speaking at a meeting of the Ministry of Defense in Moscow, Putin said, ‘In case of continuation of the rather aggressive line of our Western colleagues, we will respond with adequate military-technical measures, will react harshly to the unfriendly steps.’ Ukraine and the United States have for months publicly accused Russia of deploying some 100,000 troops to Ukraine’s borders and potentially preparing for an invasion of the country. The US and other Western nations have threatened Putin with unprecedented sanctions. Tuesday was the first time Putin spoke of conflict despite a sharp escalation of rhetoric in recent months. Days ago, Moscow handed Washington a list of security guarantees it sought from the West.” (12/21/21)

2)  Perry denies House Capitol riot exploitation panel’s request for interview
Source: US News & World Report

“Republican Rep. Scott Perry of Pennsylvania on Tuesday rebuffed a request for him to sit down for an interview and turn over documents to the House panel investigating the Jan. 6 U.S. Capitol [riot], joining other allies of former President Donald Trump in trying to stonewall the committee. ‘I stand with immense respect for our Constitution, the Rule of Law, and the Americans I represent who know that this entity is illegitimate, and not duly constituted under the rules of the US House of Representatives,’ Perry said in a statement. … The lawmaker’s refusal will test how far the committee is willing to go in its quest for information as members have so far resisted subpoenaing one of their own as they investigate the [riot] by Trump’s supporters and his efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election.” (12/21/21)

3)  Israel: Former military intelligence chief acknowledges regime’s involvement in Soleimani murder
Source: The Hill

“A former Israeli intelligence chief said it assisted the U.S. during the January 2020 assassination of Qassem Soleimani, the first official acknowledgment of the nation’s role in killing the top Iranian general. Maj. Gen. Tamir Heyman, who retired as the head of army intelligence in October, suggested in an interview with a Hebrew magazine that Israel was involved with two assassination attempts while he served the country — the first being Soleimani, who was killed in an American airstrike near Baghdad’s airport. ‘Assassinating Soleimani was an achievement, since our main enemy, in my eyes, are the Iranians,’ he said, according to The Associated Press. … Israel has never acknowledged its role in the assassination, but NBC news reported shortly after the strike that Israeli officials provided intelligence to the U.S. on Soleimani’s whereabouts. And Yahoo News reported American intelligence worked with agents in Tel Aviv to track Soleimani’s cellphone.” (12/21/21)

4)  Schumer vows January floor vote on Biden’s Big Basket of Boondoggles
Source: Politico

“Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said during a private caucus call Tuesday night that he plans to hold a floor vote on President Joe Biden’s social spending bill in January, even as the legislation’s fate remains uncertain. Senate Democrats convened virtually on the longest night of the year for the first time since Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) said over the weekend that he could not support Biden’s $1.7 trillion climate and social policy plan in its current form. During the call, Schumer vowed to press ahead with the hope of eventually shaping a deal that all 50 members of the Democratic caucus can support. … Schumer told his members that the House-passed bill would be the vehicle for the Senate to begin debating changes to the legislation. He added that barring an agreement that unites the entire caucus, the Senate will vote next month on the upper chamber’s current version of the legislation.” (12/21/21)

5)  El Salvador: Regime Buys 21 Bitcoins on 21st Day of Last Month of 21st Year of 21st Century
Source: Yahoo! News

“El Salvador bought another 21 bitcoins to mark the 21st day of the last month of the 21st year of the 21st century, President Nayib Bukele said in a series of tweets on Tuesday night. Bukele said he made the purchase at 21:21:21, and pointed out that El Salvador’s land area is 21,000 square kilometers. The president posted a screenshot of the transactions, totalling just over $1 million, saying ‘got the receipt.’ … El Salvador in September became the only country to use bitcoin as legal tender. The president also plans to create a ‘Bitcoin City,’ where residents won’t have to pay taxes.” (12/22/21)

6)  Strike at Kellogg comes to a close; workers to return Monday
Source: Detroit News

“A strike at Kellogg that has gone on since early October has ended after workers voted to ratify a new labor contract at the company’s four U.S. cereal plants. The contract covers approximately 1,400 workers represented by the union at plants in Michigan, Nebraska, Pennsylvania and Tennessee. Kellogg said Tuesday that the new contract provides immediate, across the board wage increases and enhanced benefits for all. It also provides an accelerated, defined path to top-tier wages, a major sticking point for workers, and benefits for transitional employees.” (12/21/21)

7)  Hungary: Orban says regime will defy EU court ruling on asylum policy
Source: ABC News

“Hungary will not change its immigration policies despite a recent ruling from the European Union’s top court that found them in contradiction with the bloc’s laws, Prime Minister Viktor Orban said Tuesday. Orban’s announcement came as Hungary’s anti-immigration government is locked in a dispute with the EU over the bloc’s jurisdiction over the affairs of its 27 members, especially concerning his government’s policies on immigration and LGBT issues. A ruling last year by the European Court of Justice found that Hungary had failed to respect EU law by conducting pushbacks of people entering the country without authorization, denying them the right to apply for asylum and detaining them in ‘transit zones’ along Hungary’s southern border with Serbia. But during a rare news conference in Budapest on Tuesday, the right-wing populist Orban insisted that Hungary would continue its migration policies, and that ‘it doesn’t matter what the European court ruled.'” (12/21/21)

8)  Libya: Regime electoral commission dissolves poll committees
Source: Al Jazeera [Qatar state media]

“The head of Libya’s High National Electoral Commission (HNEC) has ordered the dissolution of the electoral committees nationwide, in a move that effectively postpones this week’s presidential election. A leaked internal statement by Imad al-Sayeh dated December 20 outlined six points, chiefly ‘the disbandment of electoral regional and local branch offices and committees.’ A member of the HNEC’s board of directors on Tuesday confirmed the authenticity of the document. … Earlier on Tuesday, presidential candidates met in Benghazi to discuss the failing electoral process, as rival armed groups mobilised in Tripoli. The armed groups closed roads in the south of the capital using piles of sandbags.” (12/21/21)

9)  Hong Kong: Bail granted for two charged with sharing anti-Beijing-quisling Facebook post
Source: South China Morning Post [Hong Kong]

“The first pair of defendants charged under a new Hong Kong law that prohibits the act of inciting others to boycott an election or cast invalid ballots have been granted bail by a court to seek legal advice. Salesman Chan Kin-man, 36, and office assistant Alice Leung Yuet-sheung, 65, appeared in Kwun Tong Court on Tuesday for the first time since they were prosecuted under the amended Elections (Corrupt and Illegal Conduct) Ordinance. The new Section 27A was introduced earlier this year as part of a broader Beijing-led electoral overhaul aimed at ensuring only ‘patriots’ [i.e. Beijing quislings] held power in the city. Prosecutors alleged the duo had engaged in illegal conduct during the election period between October and December by sharing a Facebook post by fugitive ex-lawmaker Ted Hui Chi-fung, who called on voters to cast blank ballots in Sunday’s Legislative Council poll.” (12/21/21)

10) IA: ACLU sues Reynolds for “stonewalling”public records requests from news outlets
Source: Des Moines Register

“A new lawsuit on behalf of three Iowa reporters and their news organizations seeks to pry long-sought public documents from the office of Gov. Kim Reynolds. The suit was announced Thursday by the American Civil Liberties Union of Iowa. It alleges that Reynolds'[s] office has delayed responding to records request regarding COVID-19 and other policy issues, in some cases for more than a year. … The complaint, filed in Polk County district court, seeks an order finding the governor’s office in violation of the law, compelling it to turn over the requested records and refrain from future unlawful delays. … Reynolds spokesman Alex Murphy, who is also named as a defendant, said her office has no comment on the lawsuit. In a Friday email to members of the Capitol press, however, Murphy announced new processes to speed responses to record requests.” (12/21/21)

11) Chile: Boric urges citizens to back constitution rewrite
Source: The Guardian [UK]

“Chile’s future as a greener, fairer country, depends on the success of efforts to rewrite the country’s dictatorship-era constitution, president-elect Gabriel Boric said on Tuesday. After a meeting with the delegates elected last year to rewrite the 1980 constitution which enshrined the ideological legacy of General Augusto Pinochet, Boric called for Chileans to unite behind the project. ‘We all need to put our best efforts into [the constitutional process], independent of our political differences,’ Boric said in Santiago. A stunning 78% of Chileans voted last year in favor of drafting a new document and another vote this year saw the election of a broadly leftwing assembly for the task.” (12/21/21)

“Twenty YouTube Channels and two websites have been blocked for spreading anti-India propaganda, the Centre said today after a coordinated effort between intelligence agencies and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. Most of the content were on sensitive subjects linked to national security and are factually incorrect, the ministry said in a statement. The channels and websites belong to a ‘coordinated disinformation network operating from Pakistan and spreading fake news about various sensitive subjects related to India,’ the government said. They were used to post divisive content on topics like Kashmir, Indian Army, minority communities in India, Ram Mandir, General Bipin Rawat, etc, the government said.” (12/21/21)

Source: Reuters

“Romanian protesters tried to force their way into parliament on Tuesday, blocking traffic and vandalising some cars in the capital Bucharest in an attempt to prevent lawmakers from making a COVID-19 health pass mandatory for workers. Riot police were caught off guard when hundreds of protesters poured in through a yard gate, spray painting cars and forcing security staff to block the building’s entryways. The protesters later left. Police did not use force. While the ruling coalition of centrists and leftists is currently negotiating the terms of a health pass mandate, no such bill is on parliament’s legislative agenda at the moment.” (12/21/21)

Source: USA Today

“President Joe Biden on Tuesday announced the purchase of a half-billion, at-home rapid COVID-19 tests and the mobilization of 1,000 military medical personnel to overburdened [due to staff shortages caused by panic and vaccine mandates] hospitals, as officials confront for a new surge in infections driven by the omicron variant. The president unveiled the stepped-up measures in a speech from the White House as the nation — already fatigued by [politically cultivated mass hysteria over] a pandemic that’s lasted nearly two years — faces surging COVID-19 infections. Biden said Americans will be able to request the free[sic]-at-home COVID-19 tests be mailed to their homes by accessing an online website.” (12/21/21)

17) Japan: Regime employees kill three prisoners
Source: CBS News

“Japan hanged three death-row inmates on Tuesday, its first executions in two years, amid growing criticism by human rights groups of the country’s use of the death penalty. … Executions are carried out in high secrecy in Japan, where prisoners are not informed of their fate until the morning they are hanged. Since 2007, Japan has begun disclosing the names of those executed and some details of their crimes, but information is still limited. … Japan now has 107 people on death row at detention centers, instead of regular prisons. It has maintained the death penalty despite growing international criticism, saying the punishment is needed to take into consideration the victims’ feelings and as a deterrence for heinous crime. Japan and the U.S. are the only two countries in the Group of Seven industrialized nations that use capital punishment.” (12/21/21)

A UN rights office team had travelled to Poland from November 29 to December 3, but ‘was not granted access to the restricted border area,’ spokeswoman Liz Throssell told reporters. And ‘Belarus regrettably did not accept our request to visit,’ she said. … Western countries accuse Belarus of having engineered the migrant influx to pressure the bloc, which has imposed sanctions over the regime’s crackdown on the opposition and independent media. Belarus denies this and has urged the EU to take in the migrants.” (12/21/21)

The Falcon 9 lifted off from Launch Complex 39A at the Kennedy Space Center at 5:07 a.m. Eastern. Forecasts had projected just a 30% chance of acceptable weather for the launch, and weather conditions were no-go for much of the countdown, becoming acceptable less than 15 minutes before the instantaneous launch window opened. … The Falcon 9 first stage landed on the droneship ‘Just Read the Instructions’ in the Atlantic Ocean. 21) Liberals [sic] and “Will of the People” Malarkey
Source: JimBovard.com
by James Bovard

“Sen. Joe Manchin was burned in effigy by progressive Democrats and pundits after he announced on Sunday that he would not support President Biden’s Build Back Better bill. Some members of Congress sounded like this was the gravest assault on federal authority since Fort Sumter was fired on in 1861. Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) raged on Twitter, ‘When democracies are no longer able to address their constituents’ needs and demands, authoritarians seize power.’ Omar captured the Biden-era definition of authoritarianism: any politician who stands in the way of unlimited federal-deficit spending. … By castigating Manchin and calling a 51-vote defeat ‘undemocratic,’ the progressives have exposed themselves as the authoritarians they are. ‘Just do it’ is their attitude — the will of the American people, and the pain they’ll feel in their wallets — be damned.” (12/21/21)

22) The FDA Has Punted Decisions About Luvox Prescription To The Deepest Recesses Of The Human Soul
Source: Astral Codex Ten
by Scott Alexander

“Like every medication, including Tylenol, aspirin, etc, Luvox has some common minor side effects and some rare major ones. But let’s step back a second. Fluvoxamine is a bog-standard SSRI. Its side effects are generic SSRI side effects. We give SSRIs to 30 million people a year, or about 10% of all Americans. As a psychiatrist, I’m not supposed to say flippant things like ‘we give SSRIs out like candy.’ … we give them to 10% of Americans, compared to 12% of Americans who got candy last Halloween. So you can draw your own conclusion about how severe we think the risks are. For some reason the same experts who don’t mind prescribing SSRIs when people have mild depression freak out about prescribing them when they’re the only evidence-based oral medication for a deadly global pandemic.” (12/21/21)

“I’ve been doing a lot of commentary on the western propaganda campaign against China lately, so my online notifications have been full of brainwashed human livestock regurgitating all the lines they’ve been programmed to bleat about that nation by the very propaganda campaign I’m criticizing. What I find interesting is that it’s not just coming from complete mainstream normies; a lot of the pushback I’m getting comes from people who’ve succeeded in seeing through other western propaganda narratives on fronts like Russia, Syria, or Julian Assange. They’re just as brainwashed about China as any uncritical consumer of TV news, but because they get their information from people like Tucker Carlson and other so-called ‘right-populists’ who have disputed those other narratives, they assume they are safe from mass media indoctrination.” (12/21/21)

“Since we have no technology to eradicate the virus, we must learn to live with it. The fear-based lockdown policies of the past two years are no template for a healthy society. The good news is that with the new and effective technologies available and the focused protection ideas outlined in the [Great Barrington Declaration], we can end the pandemic if only we can muster the courage and political will to do so. In Sweden and many US states that have eschewed lockdowns, the pandemic is effectively over, even as the virus continues to circulate.” (12/21/21)

25) Does immigration reduce wages?
Source: EconLog
by Scott Sumner

“Critics of immigration often point to the fact that the post-WWII decades were a sort of golden age for American workers, with rapid growth in real wages up until about 1973. They argue that the immigration changes of the 1960s opened the floodgates, leading to much higher rates of immigration and lower wage gains for workers. Some people argue that it’s simply a question of supply and demand — more supply of workers means lower wages. Economists often reply that more people also means more demand for goods (and hence labor) so the impact on wages is unclear. The US has lots more workers than Canada, but similar wages. Here I’d like to set aside the demand issue, and focus on the supply of workers. Is it plausible that immigration explains slower real wage gains after 1973?” (12/21/21)

26) The Biggest Corporate Welfare Recipients Ever
Source: Town Hall
by Stephen Moore

“How much do solar, wind and electric vehicle companies get in federal handouts and tax loopholes in President Joe Biden’s Build Back Better bill? Well over $100 billion in taxpayer largesse. If all the tax credits are included, that number could reach half a trillion dollars. No other industry in American history has ever received this lucrative a paycheck. The folks at the Institute for Energy Research calculated that this is on top of the more than $150 billion in subsidies these industries received from Uncle Sam in the last 30 years. The umbilical cord to taxpayer wallets never gets cut. Yet, laughably, the left says all these subsidies to ‘green energy’ are necessary for an ‘infant industry.’ Really? Does Big Wind or Big Solar ever grow up? Incidentally, our ancestors were using windmills and solar panels during the Middle Ages.” (12/21/21)

by Kerry McDonald

“When Jessica Gregory and her husband moved from the Washington, D.C. area in 2020 to a suburban community north of Boston, they expected to find a school for their children that was similar in quality to the one they left behind. They were disappointed to discover that classroom and behavioral management consumed much of the school day, and a rigid curriculum stifled their children’s curiosity and creativity. … Determined to provide her children with a learning environment that nurtures their talents and cultivates their individuality, this fall Gregory launched The Wilder School, a microschool that is part of the booming Acton Academy network. Founded in Austin in 2010 by Laura and Jeff Sandefer, Acton Academy now has more than 250 affiliate schools in 31 states and 25 countries.” (12/21/21)

29) CNN has successfully vaccinated itself against high ratings
Source: Fox News Forum
by Greg Gutfeld

“So there’s big news over at CNN that doesn’t involve a producer molesting children. For once. I guess even perverts take holiday breaks. Yeah, it was announced that CNN has closed its offices to ‘non-essential employees.’ It’s either for COVID or so law enforcement could have a break, meaning the only people at CNN are people that are necessary to create their product. But that’s not the only news at CNN. Besides their usual arrests. Here’s a delightful picture of what appears to be a mentally deranged, unstable freak celebrating an act of arson. Yeah, it’s Jim Acosta standing with a group of CNN employees who thankfully aren’t sex traffickers. … But what’s he holding? Yes, a picture of the Fox Christmas tree, surrounded by faces of Fox TV personalities.” (12/21/21)

31) ) The Military’s New Toy To Prevent War With China
Source: The American Conservative
by Bradley Devlin

“The U.S. military has built software that is supposed to predict how China will respond to various U.S. maneuvers in East and Southeast Asia. The software reportedly analyzes data since early 2020 on various U.S. actions that impacted the relationship between two of the world’s largest powers, and calculates ‘strategic friction,’ as one defense official claimed. … The software certainly seems to have immense capabilities, and may help the U.S. military navigate complicated geopolitical issues with China that are set to become more acute in the coming months and years. However, will the military become complacent and dependent on the predictive software to respond to our largest competitor? Could using this software make China’s behavior more erratic as its planners try to beat the system?” (12/21/21)

I’m interested in seeing what they’re still hiding. However, there was at least one document that they recently released that is incriminating. 33) Defending Julian Assange Is Defending Anyone Who Dares to Speak the Truth
Source: Common Dreams
by Margaret Kimberley

“December 10 was International Human Rights Day. It is always a sham holiday for the United States, which locks up its own people at rates exceeding those of every other country, and routinely makes war against the rest of the world. In 2021 the date was treated as even more of a mockery than in the past. Joe Biden convened a bizarre democracy summit, wherein he declared other nations good or bad based on whether they go along with the dictates of the U.S. empire. Although it was in London where the U.S. behaved in a particularly shameful manner, working with the United Kingdom to secure the right to extradite Julian Assange. … His offense is one that the system will not tolerate. Over a period of years his organization, Wikileaks, revealed U.S. crimes committed around the world.” (12/21/21)

34) As US Establishment Fails Financially, Leaders Try to Make Cryptocurrencies the Scapegoat
Source: Reason
by Andrea O’Sullivan

“Government agents will not examine their bad choices and change course. They will instead lash out at ‘wreckers’ that they can blame for their own misdeeds. Here is just one example: the price of meat you see creeping up each week at the grocery store is not the result of printing insane amounts of money amidst an anti-meat ‘environmental’ shame campaign, some will insist. According to the White House, it’s the ‘greed of meat conglomerates.’ There is at least an internal logic to the anti-meat mania. Egghead planners have decided that meat is bad and we should have less of it. They can deflect the blowback onto the producers of the thing they want to eliminate anyway. It’s your classic win-win situation for government control. But flailing often misfires. This was the case with a recent Congressional hearing on a cryptocurrency technology called a stablecoin.” (12/21/21)

35) Manchin bailed Biden out on Build Back Better
Source: The Hill
by Keith Naughton

“The progressive meltdown over the failure to pass Build Back Better (BBB) is truly something to behold. How anyone thought Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) was ever going to swallow the vast grab-bag of progressive demands is almost beyond belief. There are few things worse in the world that having ones’ fervent delusions punctured — even if it’s for the better. And Manchin sinking BBB was a political gift to President Biden and the Democrats. But in their fury, the Democratic Party and the activist left are determined to take their revenge on Manchin and immolate themselves in the process. What Democrats are unwilling to see is the fact that BBB is not as popular as the top-line polling suggests and that there are much more pressing issues to focus on.” (12/21/21)

36) Welcome to a New Chapter in the Latest Boom-Bust Cycle
Source: Ludwig von Mises Institute
by Thorsten Polleit

“What lies ahead is undoubtedly a rather sensitive chapter in the boom-and-bust-cycle drama caused by US monetary policy: the US Federal Reserve System (Fed) is about to end its ultraeasy course. The reason: after many years of exceptionally low interest rates — with most real, i.e., inflation-adjusted, interest rates even in the negative territory — and a huge inflow of newly created money to the economic and financial system, goods price inflation is rearing its ugly head. … What will happen if and when the Fed begins its ‘fight against inflation’ by raising interest rates and reining in money supply growth? Looking at the Austrian business cycle theory will help answer this question.” (12/21/21)

37) The Final Word on Lockdowns
Source: The Pamphleteer
by Edward Landstreet

“Blanket lockdowns were a disaster. The economy was wrecked, people lost their businesses, their jobs, and their livelihood. Societal ills, real problems that those in power ignore, were exacerbated. Kids, safest from the virus, were the most vulnerable to the lockdowns. Pediatric hospitals and schools around the West reported the damage being done to the youth and pleaded for the unfair policies to stop. While we suffered, Big Tech gorged on our isolation. Wealth surged upwards into the hands of pro-lockdown billionaires. All of this sacrifice at the hands of our overlords for no noticeable effect on the virus. Quarantining the healthy doesn’t work.” (12/20/21)

38) Millennials and Zoomers Aren’t Going to Lose Their Hard‐Left [sic] Opinions
Source: Cato Institute
by Ryan Bourne

“In just a few short years, British millennials have gone from being perceived as a politically apathetic generation to being thought of as aggressively woke socialists. Whether it be Black Lives Matter protests or Extinction Rebellion, the Corbynite Momentum crowd or statue toppling, events have given the impression of an ascendant, intolerant ‘Generation Left.’ … Are those born from 1981 onwards really a bunch of Marxists, ready to dismantle capitalism and enforce woke orthodoxies? We should be careful not to conflate what’s trending on Twitter with the views of whole generations. But a nuanced report by the Institute of Economic Affairs[s] Kristian Niemietz suggests that, yes, Left‐wing sentiment on economics is increasingly the ‘default’ opinion of Britain’s young adults.” (12/21/21)

39) Should You Trust the Local Left?
Source: EconLog
by Bryan Caplan

“Youngkin, Virginia’s new governor-elect plans to end the state-level mask mandate, but will not impose a mandate ban on localities …. However, Youngkin has also promised to end the teaching of Critical Race Theory throughout Virginia’s public schools. … Why trust local governments to make the right decisions on masks, but not the curriculum? The obvious rationale for the CRT ban is that you don’t trust local governments to make the right choice because they’re somehow dominated by left-wing ideologues. Either local leaders are themselves ideologues, or they’re so beholden to teachers’ unions that they might as well be. But if that’s what you think, why on Earth would you trust localities to make the right choice on masks?” (12/21/21)

40) How Leftist [sic] Theory Stopped Making Sense
Source: Foreign Policy
by John-Baptiste Oduor

“Unlike the socialist political economy and philosophy of the early 20th century, postwar theory was propelled not by any kind of practical engagement but by a constant demand for innovation and newness, needed to keep up with a postwar political landscape that was thoroughly fragmented. The social transformations theory attempted to make sense of — disillusionment with communism, anti-colonial movements, women’s liberation, the existence of an underclass, the continued existence of capitalism — undermined so many assumptions about the world held across the political spectrum that it was hard to see how any overarching ideas could synthesize them, or whether theorists’ inability to do so should be considered a failure.” (12/21/21)

41) White House Reverses Course on At-Home COVID Tests
Source: The American Prospect
by David Dayen

“A couple of weeks ago, NPR’s Mara Liasson asked in a White House press briefing why the U.S. wasn’t just sending out COVID test kits to every American. ‘Should we just send one to every American?’ press secretary Jen Psaki sniffed derisively. Today, the White House announced a plan to send COVID test kits to every American. So yes, outrage does have its place, I think we can say. Psaki was really pilloried for her comments, and the backlash caused a shift in posture. The initial plan to have insurance companies reimburse for the purchase of over-the-counter tests was ill-considered. Nobody should be subjected to the hassle of insurance reimbursement over a $25 two-pack of test kits. And the problem was availability, in addition to cost: Nobody can find a drugstore that has any tests in stock.” (12/21/21)

42) Is the Biden Administration Trying To Execute a Delicate Retreat Regarding Ukraine?
Source: Antiwar.com
by Ted Galen Carpenter

“President Biden and other administration officials have stated emphatically on multiple occasions that the United States is firmly committed to Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. … It is less clear, though, whether the administration is really willing to defend Ukraine militarily against a Russian attack. Kiev and its zealous supporters in the United States hope that the stated commitment extends that far, since the credibility of deterrence, they insist, depends on the Kremlin fearing that likelihood. More sensible members of the US foreign policy community believe that the administration’s verbal commitments probably are not sincere, but worry that Washington’s bluff encourages the Ukraine government to adopt bellicose positions toward Moscow that Kiev can’t sustain on its own.” (12/21/21)

“The Biden administration has announced a ‘diplomatic boycott’ of the Olympics, keeping American officials home during the upcoming Chinese games. Only a handful of other countries have signed on. Yet another U.S. moral crusade has gone bust. … No doubt, the administration is serious about displaying its displeasure at China. However, Washington’s action and rhetoric seem mismatched. 44) The tyranny of public health
Source: spiked
by Frank Furedi

“The politicisation of public health would be less of a problem if it only helped people to live healthy lives. But that is not its function. Public health is now about moral regulation and, as we have seen during the pandemic, political control. When almost anything can become a target for public-health intervention, the very distinction between health and illness is eroded. … Public health used to be a sensible project. It used to be about protecting health and life. But now it has become a means to regulate people’s behaviour and lifestyles. And governments are now drawing on its moral authority to enforce their will on society. In its current politicised form, the ideology and practice of public health is a direct threat to freedom and democracy.” [editor’s note: “Public health” has always been a political control mechanism. 45) Why Commercialization Can’t Kill the Spirit of Christmas
ource: American Consequences
by Andrew Ferguson

“If you asked me to name my favorite Christmas song (though I can’t imagine why on Earth you would do such a thing) I would offer a list with several songs clustered at the top, competing for high honors and changing annually. One year ‘Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer’ will edge out ‘I Want a Boob Job for Christmas’ for the No. 1 spot. Then the next year, ‘Be Claus I Got High’ might bump off Granny, who will tumble to No. 4, below perennial contender ‘Daddy Please (Don’t Get Drunk This Christmas),’ to which I have a sentimental attachment. … Friends who know me as a Christian believer might ask where all the traditional religious favorites have gone — ‘Silent Night’, ‘Little Town of Bethlehem’ — which have the virtue of actually touching on the reason much of the world sets aside Christmas Day for special attention.” (12/21/21)

46) Should I Sue?
Source: Common Sense
by Paul Jacob

“Well, why not? According to some politicians, I have a perfect right to. But, you ask, on what grounds? Because of the emotional injury I suffer when I listen to these bozos. Legislation being considered in Congress would permit social-media companies to be sued for causing physical or ‘severe emotional injury,’ a provision of the Justice Against Malicious Algorithms Act. This legislation would amend Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act so as to make Internet service providers liable if they algorithmically recommend content that results in ‘“severe emotional injury to any person.’ The text of the legislation is — you guessed it! — vague and murky. And would doubtless be applied with extreme selectivity if enacted.” (12/20/21)

47) Nirvana and the Theory of the Firm

by Gary M Galles

“Nirvana economics, a term I believe was coined by Harold Demsetz, refers to reliance on assumptions that we are in the ‘best of all worlds’ in some way in our analysis — some problem or problems are presumed not to exist — when the real world forces us to grapple with the issues caused by their existence in fact. Nirvana economics often leads to conclusions that what we are observing is inefficient or monopolistic or just plain stupid. When paired with assumptions that government is better than it could actually be (nirvana government?), given the adverse incentives facing those involved, it also brings out proposals to ‘fix’ perceived problems that can be badly misconceived.” (12/20/21)

“As early as September 2020, the ‘experts’ were starting to say aloud what was previously the exclusive province of cranks and conspiracy theorists: The temporary emergency measures necessitated by the pandemic were never going away. ‘There is no getting ‘back to normal,’ experts say,’ CNN’s headline read. ‘The sooner we accept that, the better.’ … Dr. Anthony Fauci recommended integrating social distancing and mask mandates into the social compact at least until we achieve ‘a profound degree of herd immunity.’ With the prevalence of ‘breakthrough infections,’ herd immunity has become unattainable. But the public health sector’s thinking has not changed. The emergency restrictions of 2020 have evolved into a way of life.” (12/20/21)

Source: Heartland Institute
by Paul Fisher

“[T]he very first right mentioned in the very first Amendment of the Constitution is the right to be free of a State established religion and to practice one’s religion, whatever that may be or even no religion at all, free of government control or restraint. … legislators in Maine recognized that in many rural and sparsely populated areas there were insufficient number of people to support public schools. Most residents in those areas sent their children to private schools, some sectarian and some non-sectarian, and in some cases the schools were far from their residence. The exclusion of sectarian schools from the use of these tuition grants reflected the desire to avoid the ‘entanglement’ between government and religion but much of the debate in the Maine Legislature reflected an hostility to religious schools, particularly Catholic schools.” (12/20/21)
