1)  Nepal: Military shuts down streets in bid to quell unrest over Internet censorship
Source: Al Jazeera [Qatari state media]

“Armed soldiers have been patrolling the streets of Kathmandu, ordering people to remain in their homes, following a wave of deadly protests in Nepal’s capital. The Nepali army checked vehicles and people on Wednesday amid an indefinite curfew, imposed in a bid to ‘normalise’ the capital after mass unrest saw demonstrators set fire to several government buildings and force Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli to resign. The protests, triggered by a social media ban, have escalated since Monday, when security forces killed 19 demonstrators and injured hundreds.” (09/10/25)

2)  Trump blocked from firing Fed Governor Lisa Cook as lawsuit plays out
Source: CNBC

“A judge on Tuesday night blocked President Donald Trump from firing Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook as a lawsuit challenging her removal continues. ‘The public interest in Federal Reserve independence weighs in favor of Cook’s reinstatement,’ U.S. District Court Judge Jia Cobb wrote in granting Cook a preliminary injunction barring her termination. Cobb said that ‘Cook has made a strong showing that her purported removal was done in violation of the Federal Reserve Act’s ‘for cause’ provision.’ … Trump said on Aug. 25 that he was removing Cook because of suggestions by Federal Housing Finance Agency Director Bill Pulte that she committed mortgage fraud in signing documents for two properties she owns. Cook signed those documents before she joined the Fed.” (09/09/25)

3)  Qatar: Regime calls for retaliation against Israel for Doha attack
Source: The Hill

“Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani vowed on Tuesday to retaliate against Israel for its strike against Hamas’s political leadership based in Doha. … Al-Thani called the strike on Doha ‘state terrorism’ by Israel and took aim at Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who al-Thani said threatened regional security and violated the sovereignty of nearby nations. … Israel escalated its war against Hamas on Tuesday by launching an assassination strike on Hamas’s political leadership based in Qatar. The move appeared to end any efforts to release hostages through negotiation, which have been taking place in Qatar and with the help of its leaders.” (09/09/25)

4)  VA: Democrats retake US House seat in special election
Source: Virginia Mercury

“Democrat James Walkinshaw decisively won a special election Tuesday to replace former U.S. Rep. Gerry Connolly in Virginia’s 11th Congressional District, narrowing Republicans’ majority in the House of Representatives to six seats. The Associated Press called the race in Walkinshaw’s favor at 7:36 p.m., with the Democrat taking roughly 75% of the vote compared to Republican contender Stewart Whitson’s 25%. … Walkinshaw’s election puts a coalition of Democrats and a handful of Republicans one vote closer to forcing a full House vote on the release of records related to disgraced financier Jeffery Epstein.” (09/09/25)

5)  Ukraine: Russian Bomb Kills at Least 20 Picking Up Pensions, Zelenskyy Says
Source: New York Times

“A Russian bomb exploded on Tuesday in a crowd of older people as they picked up pension payments in a village near the front line in eastern Ukraine, killing at least 20 people, President Volodymyr Zelensky said. The local authorities in the Donetsk region later reported a death toll of 21 and said that an additional 21 people had been injured. A video shared by Mr. Zelensky showed dead bodies scattered around a burned minibus. The veracity of the video could not immediately be independently confirmed.” (09/09/25)

6)  Venezuela: Maduro declares Christmas in October
Source: CBS News

“President Nicolas Maduro said Monday that Christmas will come early again this year, decreeing that the annual holiday — which is typically celebrated in late December in most of the world — will begin on Oct. 1 in Venezuela. The move, which he said was aimed at bringing ‘joy’ to the Venezuelan people, came on the heels of Maduro significantly increasing his planned troop deployment to the country’s borders amid an escalating military standoff with the Trump administration, which accuses him of colluding with drug gangs to smuggle narcotics into the U.S. In 2024, Maduro brought Christmas celebrations forward during a crisis following a disputed presidential election, which opponents and the U.S. government accused Maduro of stealing.” (09/09/25)

7)  New data shows the US job market was much weaker than thought in 2024, and this year as well
Source: San Diego Union-Tribune

“The U.S. job market was much weaker in 2024 and early this year than originally reported, adding to concerns about the health of the nation’s economy. Employers added 911,000 fewer jobs than originally reported from April 2024 through March, the Labor Department reported Tuesday. The department issues the so-called benchmark revisions every year. They are intended to better account for new businesses and ones that had gone out of business. The numbers issued Tuesday are preliminary. Final revisions will come out in February 2026. … The report comes after the department reported Friday that the economy generated just 22,000 jobs in August, adding to fears that President Donald Trump’s erratic economic policies, including massive and unpredictable taxes on imports, have created so much uncertainty that businesses are reluctant to hire.” (09/09/25)

8)  Ethiopia opens Africa’s largest hydroelectric dam to Egyptian protest
Source: Reuters

“Ethiopia officially inaugurated Africa’s largest hydroelectric dam on Tuesday, a project that will provide energy to millions while deepening a rift with downstream Egypt that has unsettled the region. Ethiopia, the continent’s second most populous nation with over 120 million people, sees the $5 billion Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) on a tributary of the Nile as central to its economic ambitions. … Ethiopia’s downstream neighbours, however, have watched the project advance with dread since construction began in 2011. Egypt, which built its own Aswan High Dam on the Nile in the 1960s, fears the GERD could restrict its water supply during droughts, and could encourage the construction of other upstream dams. Its Foreign Ministry wrote to the U.N. Security Council saying the inauguration of the dam violated international law.” (09/09/25)

9)  Stellantis/Ferrari chairman, siblings, agree to $215 million extortion payment
Source: CNN

“Stellantis and Ferrari Chairman John Elkann has agreed to do a year of community service and pay a negotiated sum to settle a tax dispute over the inheritance from his grandmother, Italian prosecutors said Monday. Elkann and his siblings Lapo and Ginevra will jointly pay 183 million euros ($215 million) to the Italian tax authorities related to the estate of their grandmother Marella Caracciolo who died in 2019, prosecutors in the northern city of Turin said. … The case stems from a wider inheritance dispute between the Elkanns and their mother Margherita over the estate of Gianni Agnelli, the celebrated former Fiat boss, which has divided one of Italy’s best known business dynasties.” (09/09/25)

10) Gaza flotilla vessel struck by drone, crew says
Source: Politico

“Greta Thunberg’s flotilla carrying humanitarian aid toward Gaza was struck by a drone in Tunisian waters, its organizers said late Monday. Crew members said the drone hit Global Sumud Flotilla’s (GSF) main vessel when its was anchored outside the port of Sidi Bou Said in Tunisia. The boat sustained damage to its main deck and below-deck storage, according to footage published on X by the GSF. Nobody on board was harmed. … Tunisian authorities, however, denied the reports of a drone attack. Houcem Eddine Jebabli, a spokesperson for Tunisia’s national guard, said an investigation was ‘ongoing’ but ‘no drones have been detected,’ calling the reports ‘completely unfounded.’ ‘According to preliminary findings, a fire broke out in the life jackets on board a ship anchored 50 miles from the port of Sidi Bou Said,’ he added, suggesting that fire might have been caused by a cigarette.” (09/09/25)

11) US high school students lose ground in math and reading, continuing years-long decline
Source: Los Angeles Times

“A decade-long slide in high schoolers’ reading and math performance continued during the pandemic and through 2024, with 12th graders’ scores dropping to their lowest level in more than 20 years, according to results released Tuesday from an exam known as the nation’s report card. Eighth-grade students also lost significant ground in science skills, according to the results from the National Assessment of Education Progress. The assessments were the first since the pandemic for eighth graders in science and 12th graders in reading and math. They reflect a downward drift across grade levels and subject areas in previous releases from NAEP, which is considered one of the best gauges of the academic progress of U.S. schools.” (09/09/25)

12) Poll: Mamdani would repeat beatdown against Cuomo even if field clears
Source: New York Post

“Socialist mayoral hopeful Zohran Mamdani would still beat Andrew Cuomo in the general election even if President Trump somehow cleared the field for a one-on-one match-up, according to a new poll published Tuesday. The sobering survey for ex-governor Cuomo has Mamdani still beating him — 48 to 44 — even if Mayor Eric Adams and GOP nominee Curtis Sliwa manage to get their names off the ballot, the poll from Siena Research/NY Times shows. ‘The big ‘if’ is what would happen if both Sliwa and Adams were to drop out of the race and make it a two-person showdown,’ said Siena director Don Levy. ‘Cuomo would capture the vast majority of both Adams’[s] and Sliwa’s current support and win a majority of voters over [age] 45. At present, Cuomo would need both Adams and Sliwa to drop out in order to close the gap’.” [editor’s note: The next question would be, if Cuomo dropped out, and it was Commdani (D) vs Guardian Angel founder Sliwa (R), how would that fare? – SAT] [additional editor’s note: My guess would be Mamdani 80, Sliwa 20 – TLK] (09/09/25)

13) Thailand: Court Sends Thaksin to One Year in Jail for Dodging Prison
Source: Bloomberg

“A Thai court ordered former leader Thaksin Shinawatra to serve one year in prison to complete a sentence for a past conviction, the latest setback for the influential politician whose daughter was ousted as prime minister last month. The Supreme Court’s Criminal Division for Holders of Political Positions ruled that Thaksin’s six-month stay in a police hospital in 2023, when he began serving a reduced sentence for abuse of power and conflicts of interest, does not count toward his term. The ruling is final and cannot be appealed. The court said Thaksin’s transfer from jail to a police hospital was unlawful and his time at the hospital wasn’t considered as time served.” (09/09/25)

14) Scientists baffled by powerful & long-lasting gamma ray explosion outside our galaxy
Source: SFGate

“Scientists have discovered a gamma ray explosion outside our galaxy that’s not only exceptionally powerful, but also long-lasting. Telescopes on Earth and in space — including Hubble — have teamed up to study the unique explosion of high-energy radiation first observed in July. Astronomers reported Tuesday it’s unlike anything they’ve witnessed before. The repeated bursts of gamma rays were detected over the course of a day, according to scientists. That’s highly unusual since these kinds of bursts normally last just minutes or even milliseconds — rarely no more than a few hours — as dying stars collapse or are torn apart by black holes. Scientists said such a long and recurrent gamma ray explosion is puzzling — a cosmic whodunit, at least for now. More observations are needed to confirm its precise whereabouts. The European-led team announced its findings in the Astrophysical Journal Letters in August.” (09/09/25)

15) Judge rejects Anthropic’s record-breaking $1.5 billion settlement for frivolous AI copyright lawsuit
Source: Engadget

“Judge William Alsup has rejected the record-breaking $1.5 billion settlement Anthropic has agreed to for a piracy [sic] lawsuit filed by writers. According to Bloomberg Law, the federal judge is concerned that the class lawyers struck a deal that will be forced ‘down the throat of authors.’ Alsup reportedly felt misled by the deal and said it was ‘nowhere close to complete.’ In his order, he said he was ‘disappointed that counsel have left important questions to be answered in the future,’ including the list of works involved in the case, the list of authors, the process of notifying members of the class and the claim form class members can use to get their part of the settlement. … the plaintiffs sued Anthropic over the company’s use of pirated [sic] copies of their works to train its large language models.” (09/08/25)

16) North Korea: Kim oversees solid-fuel ICBM engine test
Source: United Press International

“North Korean leader Kim Jong Un oversaw the test of a solid-fuel engine for intercontinental ballistic missiles, calling it a ‘significant change’ in Pyongyang’s growing nuclear weapon capabilities, state media reported Tuesday. Kim oversaw the ninth and final test of the high-thrust engine on Monday, state-run Korean Central News Agency said. … Missiles using solid-fuel propellants have long been on Kim’s wish list of weapons as they can be transported and launched more quickly than liquid-fuel models. North Korea has unveiled several long-range missiles that analysts believe are capable of reaching the continental United States.” (09/09/25)

17) Bill Clinton letter in Epstein “birthday book” among new files released by House Oversight Committee
Source: Fox News

“The House Oversight Committee has released another tranche of files related to Jeffrey Epstein on Monday night, which includes a message from former President Bill Clinton in the late pedophile’s [sic] infamous ‘birthday book.’ The surprise document dump by the GOP-led panel came hours after Epstein’s estate turned materials over to House investigators, pursuant to a congressional subpoena. Among the documents released by the committee is the reported book compiled by Epstein accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell for the late pedophile’s [sic] 50th birthday. What appears to be an entry by Clinton praises Epstein’s ‘childlike curiosity, the drive to make a difference, and the [illegible] of friends.’ The book also appears to include entries by former Epstein attorney Alan Dershowitz and President Donald Trump, though the White House and the president himself have vehemently denied its veracity on multiple occasions.” (09/09/25)

18) LA: New Orelans Archdiocese agrees to $230 million settlement in clergy sex abuse case
Source: ABC News

“The New Orleans Archdiocese on Monday agreed to a $230 million proposed settlement for survivors of clergy sexual abuse, attorneys for some of the survivors said Monday. The agreement paves the way for a final resolution to yearslong negotiations amid a series of similar settlements from the Catholic Church. The archdiocese had announced in May that it would pay at least $179.2 million in response to more than 500 abuse claims, which the bloc of attorneys said they opposed because they considered it to be lowballing the hundreds of survivors. … The archdiocese had filed for bankruptcy in May 2020 rather than handle each abuse claim separately, which survivors point out allows church leadership to avoid facing tough questions in court.” (09/09/25)

19) MI: Judge tosses case against 15 fake Trump electors
Source: SFGate

“A Michigan judge dismissed criminal charges Tuesday against a group of people who were accused of attempting to falsely certifying [sic] President Donald Trump as the winner of the 2020 election in the battleground state, a major blow to prosecutors as similar cases in four other states have been muddied with setbacks. District Court Judge Kristen D. Simmons said in a court hearing that the 15 Republicans accused will not face trial. The case has dragged through the courts since Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel, a Democrat, announced the charges over two years ago. Simmons said she saw no intent to commit fraud in the defendants’ actions. Whether they were ‘right, wrong or indifferent,’ they ‘seriously believed’ there were problems with the election, the judge said.” (09/09/25)

20) ICC opens war crimes hearing against Ugandan rebel Joseph Kony
Source: Al Jazeera [Qatari state media]

“The International Criminal Court (ICC) is slated to hear evidence against fugitive Ugandan rebel leader Joseph Kony two decades after his Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) gained international infamy for atrocities in northern Uganda. The Tuesday hearing, known as a ‘confirmation of charges,’, is the Hague-based court’s first-ever held in absentia. Kony faces 39 counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity in connection to the LRA’s campaign against the Ugandan government between 2002 and 2005, which prosecutors allege was rife with rape, torture, and abductions of children. Kony has eluded law enforcement since the ICC first issued an indictment in 2005, making the hearing a litmus test for others in which arresting the suspect is considered a far-off prospect, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Russian President Vladimir Putin.” (09/09/25)

21) Shutdown Theater: Every Play Eventually Ends Its Run
Source: Garrison Center
by Thomas L Knapp

“Act One: ‘There’s a government shutdown coming if we don’t pass a spending bill!’ Act Two: ‘Let’s fight about it!’ (The most common plot tweak comes in here with the occasional insertion of a short supposed ‘shutdown’) Act Three: ‘SURPRISE! We made a deal!’ Act Three always closes with a set change: A road, and cast members kicking a can down it. Curtain call — the cast takes its bows. They’ve once again saved the day by borrowing and spending more money than ever before. Please clap. … It’s Max Bialystock’s and Leo Bloom’s wildest dream: ‘Springtime for Hitler’ isn’t just a money-making (for them, but nobody else) flop, it’s history’s longest-running such flop! The last time US politicians actually (and very temporarily) paid off their ever-growing debt was 190 years ago in 1835.” (09/09/25)

22) America’s Vestigial Constitution
Source: Libertarian Institute

Does the United States Constitution grant President Donald Trump the power to unilaterally blow up boats of alleged drug smugglers on the high seas? No. … Does the Constitution grant Trump the power to bomb other countries when they may harbor terrorists or have a nuclear weapons program? No. … Does the Constitution grant Trump the power to deploy the National Guard to Los Angeles, Washington DC or Chicago? No. … Does the Constitution grant Trump the power to make rules for the military, like banning transgender troops? No. … Does the Constitution grant Trump the power to raise taxes unilaterally, like tariffs? No. … All of the above powers of Congress are now claimed by Donald Trump as his alone, among others. 24) Slow-Motion Authoritarianism
Source: CounterPunch
by John Feffer

“In military coups, the generals take over from one day to the next. Civilian presidents, when they declare martial law, assume emergency powers and start immediately ruling like dictators. But the more common method of destroying a democracy these days is through death by a thousand cuts. Elected leaders only gradually undermine democratic institutions and accumulate more executive power. One day, voila, the democracy is fatally compromised, and no one can point to a single act that transformed the elected leader into an autocrat. That is the way that Vladimir Putin, who was elected to his first term as president in 2000, has become Russia’s leader for life. Viktor Orban became Hungary’s prime minister in 2010 and, by consciously following Putin’s example, has presided over Hungary ever since. And now Donald Trump is following Orban’s example.” (09/09/25)

25) Did AI break the job market?
Source: Foundation for Economic Education
by Robert Bernhardt

“Once upon a time, the labor market was mostly local. Businesses placed small ads in newspapers, received a handful of applications, and made their selections from there. Each stage of the process, from the cost of advertising to writing and mailing applications, to having personnel review them, involved significant marginal costs. There was friction—job seekers had to spend money to send applications, or for some jobs they had to show up in person to apply. The system wasn’t scalable from either side. From today’s perspective, the job market of yesteryear may seem like a lost paradise. … Applicants are trapped in a demoralizing game, sending hundreds of applications with little chance of standing out. Meanwhile, companies struggle to identify genuinely strong candidates in a sea of indistinguishable, AI-crafted submissions. There may be two potential ways forward.” (09/09/25)

26) China’s Currency Coup: How Beijing is targeting America’s wallet and future
Source: Fox News
by Liz Peek

“Last week, China showcased its military might and growing alliance with U.S. adversaries including Russia, North Korea and, at least for now, India. But that show of force is not the only threat posed by today’s axis of evil. Equally alarming is the insidious attack by China and its allies on the U.S. dollar, ringing alarms across global financial markets. China and other central banks have been stockpiling gold, diversifying their reserves away from U.S. government bonds, driving gold prices higher and Treasury yields up. Their allies have followed suit. Does it matter to most Americans? Yes. A weaker dollar means traveling abroad and imported goods are more expensive, even without tariffs. Higher interest rates inflate borrowing costs.” (09/09/25)

For Ukraine to achieve its best possible outcome, it must find a diplomatic way to avoid outright military defeat. 28) US Taxpayers Will Pay Billions in New Fossil Fuel Subsidies Thanks to the Big Beautiful Bill
Source: Wired
by Holly Taft

“The Trump administration has already added nearly $40 billion in new federal subsidies for oil, gas, and coal in 2025, a report released Tuesday finds, sending an additional $4 billion out the door each year for fossil fuels over the next decade. That new amount, created with the passage of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act this summer, adds on to $30.8 billion a year in preexisting subsidies for the fossil fuel industry. The report finds that the amount of public money the US will now spend on domestic fossil fuels stands at least $34.8 billion a year.” [editor’s note: If you keep reading, it turns out that the “subsidies” are mostly “tax breaks,” which, unless they are “refundable,” are not really subsidies – TLK] (09/09/25)

29) Trump & Wright Turning America Into a Gas Station Masquerading as a Nation
Source: The Crucial Years
by Bill Mckibben

“Way back in January of 2015, six months before Donald Trump began America’s escalator-like descent, Sen. John McCain of Arizona took to the floor of the Senate to describe Russia as ‘a gas station masquerading as a country.’ He was responding to the invasion of Crimea, and demanding the US stand up to Moscow; within a few weeks others has shortened his bon mot to ‘gas station with nukes.’ It hit at an essential truth: Russia, for all its size and might, hadn’t developed much of anything in recent decades; Vladimir Putin survived by pumping gas to the rest of the world, resting on the weapons his Soviet predecessors had bequeathed him. Eight months into the second Trump administration, what are we?” (09/09/25)

30) They Just Bombed Greta Thunberg’s Boat
Source: Caitlin Johnstone, Rogue Journalist
by Caitlin Johnstone

“A drone appears to have struck a boat from the Global Sumud Flotilla while it was docked at a Tunisian port on its way to bring aid into Gaza, temporarily starting a fire. Nobody on board was harmed. The boat was reportedly crewed by the same activists who had attempted to sail to Gaza on the Madleen this past July, including Greta Thunberg. And it is here worth noting that Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir recently said that Global Sumud Flotilla activists must be designated as terrorists and treated accordingly, in order to ‘create a clear deterrent’ against foreign parties attempting to bring aid into Gaza by sea. It is no mystery who the prime suspect is in this attack.” [editor’s note: At the moment, it’s unclear whether there WAS any attack – TLK] (09/09/25)

31) Democrats Believe in Totalitarian Government
Source: Town Hall
by Mark Lewis

“For all their screaming and hollering about ‘democracy,’ the Democratic Party of today believes in totalitarian government. And I’m going to prove it in this article. Most rank-and-file members of the party are truly ignorant of this matter, but it is the logical implications of what they believe. Again, to quote Senator Tim Kaine’s recent statement on the source of human rights: ‘The notion that rights don’t come from laws, and don’t come from the government, but come from the Creator … That’s what the Iranian government believes. So the statement that our rights do not come from our laws or our governments is extremely troubling.’ This is a statement of totalitarian government. To Tim Kaine, the Declaration of Independence is ‘extremely troubling.'” [editor’s note: As opposed to “rights come from Mark Lewis’s whims … – TLK] (09/09/25)

32) The Intellectual Vacuity of the National Conservatives
Source: The Atlantic
by Jonathan Chait

“National conservatism, the post-liberal movement that theorized the use of state power to wage right-wing culture war, stands historically triumphant. And yet, as the natcons met last week in downtown Washington to celebrate their conquest and stomp on the face of liberal democracy, they encountered a nettlesome problem. It was the same one that has popped up recurrently in right-wing nationalist movements over the centuries: what to do about the Jews. … The big secret of intellectual right-wing authoritarianism is that it’s just not very intellectual. At the conference, opposing views appeared only as straw men. With one exception … I heard zero attempts to articulate liberal ideas, even if just to rebut them. Likewise, with one major exception, I heard no attempts to define any limiting principles to the natcons’ enthusiasm for crushing the opposition with any weapon available.” (09/09/25)

33) Trump’s “Shock-and-Awe” Approach to Governing as Deluded as W’s Iraq War
Source: Common Dreams
by James Zogby

“Nothing good will come of the chaos that has already been created by the Trump administration. In just a few months, it’s taken a wrecking ball to institutions, agencies, and programs. The administration has taken dramatic steps to: gut the federal work force; withhold billions of dollars in research grants intended to address health and a range of other scientific concerns; eliminate foreign aid programs and the entities that deliver them; dismantle governmental health institutions; slash programs that provide healthcare and food to the poor and disabled; wreak havoc in international trade relations by imposing, then withdrawing, then reimposing tariffs based on whim or personal vendetta; and create fear and panic in cities across the country …” (09/09/25)

35) The Fear-Mongering Rackets of the U.S. National-Security State
Source: Future of Freedom Foundation
by Jacob G Hornberger

“The end of the Cold War in 1989 provided a fantastic opportunity for a major reset in relations between the American people and the people of Russia, China, Cuba, North Korea, Vietnam, and other nations that U.S. officials had long designated as official enemies of the United States. For almost 45 years following the end of World War II, U.S. officials had inculcated a mindset of deep fear among the American people — fear that the Russians, Chinese, and other communist nations were coming to get us. It was all one great big racket designed to justify the conversion of the U.S. government from our founding governmental structure of a limited-government republic to a national-security state, a type of totalitarian-like governmental structure that wields omnipotent powers, such as the power of engaging in state-sponsored assassinations.” (09/09/25)

36) A Blessing and a Curse
Source: EconLog
by Jon Murphy

“The market as an institution is both a blessing and a curse. Its blessing lies in its coordinating abilities. As Adam Smith first noted back in his Wealth of Nations, nobody knows how to make a woolen coat. Rather, it is the coordinated (although not planned) actions of “a great multitude” of workers that results in a woolen coat …. The market’s curse lies in its very decentralization. Referring back to Adam Smith, division of labor results in a certain ‘torpor of the mind’ … where an individual becomes so wrapped up in their specialized work that they know nothing of the world beyond.” (09/09/25)

37) The Random, Senseless Killing That Was Totally Avoidable
Source: Free Press
by Maya Sulkin

“Iryna Zarutska, 23, had recently arrived in the United States from Ukraine and was ‘seeking safety from the war and hoping for a new beginning,’ according to her family. On August 22, she was looking at her phone on a light rail train in Charlotte, North Carolina, when the man sitting behind her stood up, pulled a knife out of his pocket, and stabbed her in the neck three times. ‘I got that white girl’, he can be heard saying over and over again. She was pronounced dead within minutes. Video of the attack, released Friday, made it seem like a random, senseless, unexplainable tragedy. It actually was the opposite. It was completely avoidable. The man charged with first-degree murder for the stabbing, Decarlos Brown Jr., 34, is a career criminal (a familiar term in America), with at least 14 previous arrests, including robbery and assault.” (09/09/25)

38) For Putin, bargaining and bombing aren’t mutually exclusive
Source: Responsible Statecraft
by Jennifer Kavanagh

“In the early hours of Sunday morning, Russia launched its largest air attack on Ukraine to date, including over 800 drones and 13 ballistic missiles. Cities across the country came under fire, and a government building in Kyiv was damaged. Officials in Europe and the United States were quick to condemn the attacks as evidence that Vladimir Putin is not serious about ending Russia’s nearly four-year conflict with Ukraine. They are right. Putin is not yet ready to stop fighting. And why would he be? After all, his army has the upper hand on the battlefield while Ukraine struggles with manpower shortages and materiel deficiencies. Putin may, however, be ready to start bargaining over what the end to the war might look like, and signaled as much at last week’s Shanghai Cooperation Organization meeting in China.” (09/09/25)

39) Under Trump, Process Is for Suckers
Source: The Dispatch
by Michael Warren

“There may be no other phrase more fitting for the second Trump administration than ‘I don’t give a sh-t.’ That was Vice President J.D. ‘Very Online’ Vance [on the fact that the murder of 11 people on board a boat in the Caribbean was a war crime] …. Vance’s admission of indifference is telling. Who cares about questions of legality or procedure when it comes to killing those who ‘poison our fellow citizens?’ For Trump and his administration, constraints on government power are annoying hurdles to overcome. Checks and balances are for those who don’t know ‘what time it is.’ Critics don’t deserve good faith. The process is for suckers.” (09/09/25)

41) Trump Lets Bosses Grab $400 Billion in Worker Pay
Source: The American Prospect
by David Dayen

“Becca Kelly Slaughter, a commissioner at the Federal Trade Commission, got her job back last Wednesday. She immediately requested a vote to restore the FTC’s ‘click to cancel’ rule, which would make it easier to end recurring subscriptions. On Friday, she issued a dissent in the FTC’s decision to stop defending its ban on employee noncompete agreements in federal court. In just a few days, she had fulfilled the mission of the agency of protecting workers and consumers. So by Monday, she was out of a job again. U.S. Chief Justice John Roberts, in a perverse ruling at odds with a 90-year-old direct precedent, issued a stay of a D.C. district court’s order reversing the illegal firing of Slaughter by President Trump earlier this year. This effectively allows Trump to fire Slaughter for now, pending ongoing review of the case.” (09/09/25)

43) Two Cheers for the AUMF
Source: The American Conservative
by Jude Russo

“It is month eight of the Golden Age of America, and President Peacemaker is preparing to let slip the dogs of war on Venezuela. The Navy has parked a variety of ships, including an amphibious landing group, outside Venezuelan territorial waters; the Americans blew up an apparent drug-running vessel as a prelude to whatever is coming next. … I hate to be seen carping, but this all has gotten rather silly, hasn’t it? I’m more or less a disappointed Madisonian; I understand that the system is designed so that each component tries to expand its own powers. Nevertheless, it is striking that the administration of Donald Trump, whose campaign rhetoric was built in large part around the criticism of irresponsible foreign interventions, has arrogated broader executive war powers than even the Bush administration in the heyday of the Global War on Terror.” (09/09/25)

44) The A-word: Abundance acolytes debate their own appeal
Source: Semafor

“The progressive fear that the Abundance movement wants to take over the Democratic Party isn’t baseless at all — its adherents have plenty of influence in it now. The yes-in-my-backyard mindset is popular with younger elected Democrats in cities, who have been living with higher costs than their parents. … Every Democrat is going to run on affordability, and the abundance movement wants quick action when those Democrats win. To persuade them, they recruit like-minded electeds, mostly in cities, and advertise their successes when they break local resistance to housing reform or more energy infrastructure.” (09/08/25)

45) Even if concerns over RFK Jr. are valid, CDC DOES need to be reined in
Source: New York Post
by Jeffrey A Singer

“Many medical experts are rightly alarmed by Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.’s ‘unscientific claims’ — from debunked vaccine-autism links to exaggerated warnings about food dyes and ADHD. Their outrage grew when he cut the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices from 17 members to seven, some sharing his views, and fired Centers for Disease Control Director Susan Monarez, prompting three top CDC officials to resign. Yet these same experts mostly stayed silent when the CDC, under pressure from teachers’ unions, kept children out of school for nearly two years — while Europe largely stayed open — or when public health authorities leaned on social-media platforms to censor medical voices that disagreed with them. Only now, with power shifted, do they sound the alarm about CDC politicization. The contrast is striking: Outrage seems to follow the politics of power rather than the principles of public health.” (09/08/25)

“‘Ruff! Ruff ruff ruff! Ruff ruff! Ruff ruff ruff! Growl!’ Translation: ‘I’m just a dog! I was framed! I had nothing to do with it! I oppose fraudulent voting on principle! Growl!’ The culprit is the dog’s owner, an Orange County, California woman, Laura Lee Yourex. In 2021, Yourex mailed in a ballot in the name of her dog — not Lucky or Fluffy but ‘Maya Jean Yourex,’ which cognomen the canine, no longer with us, is also on record as disavowing. We’ll call the dog MJ for short and leave your ex out of it. In 2021, the MJ ballot was accepted. When Laura Lee tried the same thing in 2022, the ballot was rejected. The 2021 election was state level. For state elections, California eschews the voter-verification requirements of federal elections.” (09/08/25)

47) Good Governance Requires Accountability

“Washington is in chaos. USAID has been shut down; fourteen million people will likely die as a result. The military has been illegally deployed to American cities to stroke the president’s ego and assert his authoritarian rule. ICE is running wild, disappearing people off the street for exercising their First Amendment rights. A natural liberal reaction to these executive excesses is that we need more rules. We need more rules about how the military can be deployed. We need more rules about how civil servants can be fired. We need more rules about who can be deported. Ask yourself: did the rules work the first time? If the rule you followed brought you here, what use was the rule?” (09/08/25)

49) The Real Estate Pity Party in NYC
Source: In These Times
by Thomas Birmingham & Rebecca Burns

“It is a truth universally acknowledged that a New York City businessperson in possession of an obscene fortune will decamp to Florida if faced with incremental tax and regulatory increases. Or so claimed a chorus of plutocrats scorned by the upset victory of Zohran Mamdani in the city’s Democratic mayoral primary in June. The next night, hedge fund manager Bill Ackman took to social media to warn of a mass defection of his fellow financiers. A day later, real estate executive Danny Fishman declared himself already out. A Mamdani mayoralty ’would be the death penalty for the city’, as well as ’the best thing to happen to Miami and Palm Beach since Covid’, Fishman told the Wall Street Journal. Grocery store magnate John Catsimatidis, meanwhile, threatened to close his Manhattan-based supermarket chain, citing an inability to compete with city-owned stores — though Mamdani has proposed piloting just five.” (09/08/25)
