0)  A Note From The Publisher: We Don't Do Ransomware

THANK YOU to "subscribing contributors" PD and GC, whose payments totaling $30 over the last 24 hours bring our year-end fundraiser total (as of 6am Eastern US time) to $732.50! Please support the freedom movement's daily newspaper at:

https://news.rationalreview.com/support-rrnd

Unlike some people asking you for money, we don't do the "ransomware" fundraising model. You know what I'm talking about: The project that "may have to close our doors if you don't come through." The televangelist who will be "called home by God if you don't write a check." So on, so forth. We have no plans to stop producing Rational Review News Digest / Freedom News Daily.

But we do have to eat, and although we both do other things in addition to this to earn our livings, we spend time each day delivering value to you ... and once a year, asking you to return some of the value you get out of that work in the form of financial support.

Our goal this year is $5,150. That's not a lot. And since supporter GL is "matching funds," we only have to raise $2,575 to get there. We're at about 28.5% of the goal. Please help us get to 100% so we can stop talking about money again until NEXT October:

Have a great day!

1)  Ukraine war: Russian strikes leave more of country without power
Source: ABC News

"Russian missile strikes and shelling of energy utilities left more Ukrainian villages, towns and parts of two cities without power on Wednesday, authorities said, further squeezing Ukraine and threatening misery for millions in winter. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy again urged Ukrainians to make 'a very conscious' effort to save power, speaking ahead of another night where power substations and other infrastructure were pounded. ... Zelenskyy tweeted Tuesday that nearly one-third of Ukraine's power stations have been destroyed since Oct. 10, causing 'massive blackouts' nationwide." (10/19/22)

2)  Jury acquits Danchenko of lying to FBI in Steele dossier case
Source: The Guardian [UK]

"A jury on Tuesday acquitted a thinktank analyst accused of lying to the FBI about his role in the creation of a discredited dossier about Donald Trump. The case against Igor Danchenko was the third and possibly final case brought by the special counsel John Durham as part of his investigation into how the FBI conducted its own inquiry into allegations of collusion between the 2016 Trump campaign and the Kremlin. The first two cases ended in an acquittal and a guilty plea with a sentence of probation. ... The jury reached its verdict after roughly nine hours of deliberations over two days. The acquittal marked a significant setback for Durham. Despite hopes among Trump supporters that the prosecutor would uncover a sweeping conspiracy within the FBI and other agencies to derail his candidacy, the three-year investigation failed to produce evidence that met those expectations." 3)  UK: MP says Chinese diplomat involved in protester attack
Source: BBC News [UK state media]

"One of China's most senior UK diplomats was involved in violence against protesters at the Manchester consulate on Sunday, a British MP says. 'What we saw was the Chinese consul-general then ripping down posters and peaceful protest,' Alicia Kearns told MPs in the House of Commons. MPs in Parliament have privilege, allowing them to speak freely without fear of legal action. China has not commented on Zheng Xiyuan's alleged involvement. But the foreign ministry in Beijing defended the actions of consulate staff. Spokesman Wang Wenbin said people had 'illegally entered' the grounds and any country's diplomats would have taken 'necessary measures' to protect their premises. In a tweet, UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly said: 'I've ordered the summoning of the Chinese charge d'affaires to demand an explanation for the shocking scenes outside the Chinese consulate-general in Manchester on Sunday.'" 4)  Argentina: Regime asks Qatar regime to detain Iranian official accused of Jewish center attack
Source: Reuters

"Argentina's justice department has asked Qatar to arrest a top Iranian official for his alleged participation in a 1994 attack on a Jewish community center in Buenos Aires that killed 85 people. Federal judge Daniel Rafecas late on Monday requested the detention of Iran Vice President for Economic Affairs Dr. Mohsen Rezaei Mirghaed, who is currently in Qatar, so he can be tried in Argentina. Argentina does not currently have an extradition treaty with Qatar. Investigations into the 1994 attack, in which an explosives-laden truck blew up outside the Argentine Israeli Mutual Association (AMIA) building, have made little progress. Argentine courts have blamed the attack on Iran. But no one has been brought to trial in either that case or a deadly 1992 bombing of the Israeli embassy in Buenos Aires. Iran denies playing a role in either attack." (10/18/22)

5)  Germany: Greens Leaders Back Nuke Extension, Grassroots Angry
Source: US News & World Report

"Senior members of Germany's environmentalist Greens party indicated Tuesday that they would accept Chancellor Olaf Scholz's decision to extend the lifetime of the country's three remaining nuclear plants for a few months. The reactors were long scheduled to be switched off at the end of the year, but Economy Minister Robert Habeck agreed to let two plants run until mid-April amid a feared energy crunch. ... An alliance of anti-nuclear groups in the Emsland region slammed Scholz's decision. They said the aging reactor poses a considerable risk, noting that it hasn't undergone period safety inspections for years. The groups said they plan to stage protests against the decision in the coming weeks." (10/18/22)

6)  NY: Amazon workers vote against union
Source: Yahoo! Finance

"Amazon workers at a warehouse near Albany, New York voted against joining the Amazon Labor Union (ALU), in a blow to a union that had a historic victory at JFK8 in Staten Island earlier this year. The final count was 406 against the union, and 206 for the union, with 31 challenged ballots. The warehouse, which is at Castleton-on-Hudson, represented the ALU's first attempt at organizing outside New York City, coming after its win in Staten Island." (10/18/22)

7)  Tigray war: Ethiopian regime says three towns taken amid resumed fighting
Source: ABC News

"Ethiopian authorities say they have taken control of three towns in Tigray, the embattled northern region that has seen a resurgence of fighting since August. The Government Communication Service in a statement Tuesday said the towns of Shire, in the region's northwest, and Alamata and Korem in the south have been taken from Tigrayan control. ... Fighting resumed between Tigray forces and federal troops in August, bringing an end to a cease-fire in place since March that had allowed much-needed aid to enter the region. Eritrean troops are also fighting, on the side of Ethiopia's federal military." (10/18/22)

8)  Iranian climber: "Hijab fell off accidentally" at competition
Source: BBC News [UK state media]

"A female Iranian climber who competed with her hair uncovered did so because her hijab fell off 'inadvertently,' a post on her Instagram account says. Elnaz Rekabi, 33, was praised by those protesting against Iran's dress code after video showed her violating it at the Asian Championships in South Korea. BBC Persian reported on Monday that friends had been unable to contact her. On Tuesday, the Instagram post apologised for 'getting everybody worried' and said she was flying home. ... BBC Persian's Rana Rahimpour says that to many people the language used in this post looks like it has been written under duress. Other Iranian women who have competed abroad without wearing a headscarf in the past have said they came under pressure from Iranian authorities to issue similar apologies, she adds." (10/18/22)

9)  OH: Supreme Court suspends Cleveland judge
Source: Cleveland.com

"The Ohio Supreme Court on Tuesday kicked longtime Cleveland Municipal Court Judge Pinkey Carr off the bench and temporarily stripped her of her law license for committing a level of misconduct the majority of justices called 'unprecedented.' ... The investigation found that Carr was jailing people in an effort to compel them to pay fines to make more money for the court. It also revealed that Carr once ordered a woman to spend 15 days in jail because the woman rolled her eyes and made disparaging remarks about Carr's courtroom .... She negotiated plea deals with defendants on behalf of city prosecutors who were not present and then falsified journal entries that said prosecutors were involved -- an act that the court's majority said in its opinion could amount to the crime of falsification." 10) Defying Pentagon Secrecy, WaPo Exposes Retired US Generals on Saudi Payroll
Source: Common Dreams

"A sweeping investigation published by The Washington Post on Tuesday after years of digging and legal battles with the U.S. government shows that at least 15 retired American generals and admirals have worked as paid consultants for Saudi Arabia's ministry of defense since 2016. 'Saudi Arabia's paid advisers have included retired Marine Gen. James L. Jones, a national security adviser to President Barack Obama, and retired Army Gen. Keith Alexander, who led the National Security Agency under Obama and President George W. Bush,' the Post reported, citing more than 4,000 pages documents obtained through Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) filings. The Post noted that it 'sued the Army, the Air Force, the Navy, the Marine Corps, and the State Department in federal court' in pursuit of the documents, which the outlet finally obtained after a protracted legal fight." On Monday, 131,318 ballots were cast in-person. In the 2018 midterm elections, 70,849 ballots were cast in-person on the first day of early voting, according to a release from the Georgia secretary of state's office. 12) Biden vows abortion legislation as top priority next year
Source: SFGate

"President Joe Biden promised Tuesday that the first bill he sends to Capitol Hill next year will be one that codifies Roe v. Wade (if Democrats control enough seats in Congress for Biden to sign abortion protections into law) in a speech designed to energize his party's voters just three weeks ahead of the November midterms. 'If you care about the right to choose, then you gotta vote,' Biden said during remarks at the Howard Theatre in Washington. He urged those in attendance to recall how they felt when the Supreme Court in late June overturned the landmark 1973 ruling legalizing abortion, and repeatedly lambasted Republicans nationwide who have pushed for restrictions on the procedure, often without exceptions. Biden said 'the only sure way to stop these extremist laws that are putting in jeopardy women's health and rights is for Congress to pass a law.'" (10/18/22)

"Industries across France went on strike Tuesday to push for pay hikes that keep up with rising inflation, ramping up the clash between workers and the government after weeks of walkouts that hobbled oil refineries and sparked gasoline shortages around the country. ... Rail and other transportation workers, trucking and bus companies, some high school teachers and public hospital employees have heeded a call by an oil workers' union for French industry to push for salary increases and protest government intervention in the refinery strikes. ... just one in two trains were running Tuesday in the southern region rail network, causing delays during morning rush hour. The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB)/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index (HMI), which is designed to gauge market conditions, fell 8 points to 38 in October from the previous month. "The Denver-based graphic designer who now finds herself in the middle of a Supreme Court battle says she was shocked when she first learned that a Colorado state law required her to design websites for same-sex couples against her Christian faith. 'When I decided I wanted to create for weddings, that was a natural thing for me,' Lorie Smith, owner of the website design company 303 Creative, told Fox News Digital in an interview. 'My mom's business was in the wedding industry. So that was not a new concept. I've always loved weddings, starting back with my own wedding. 17) Report: Oakland police considering use of possibly lethal robots
Source: SFGate

"The Oakland Police Department is considering deploying potentially lethal robots armed with shotgun rounds. According to a report by the Intercept published Monday, an Oakland police spokesperson said that despite objections from a civilian oversight board, the department still has its sights on using said robots. The police department needs permission from a 'governing body,' per California law, to use military-grade percussion-activated non-electric (or PAN) disruptors, which could be outfitted with live rounds. Typically, PAN disruptors are used to disable bombs from up to 10 meters away using blank shells. At a September Oakland Police Commission subcommittee meeting, Oakland Police Lt. Omar Daza-Quiroz explained to subcommittee member Jennifer Tu how the robots could be armed with lethal force. 'Yeah, physically, a live round can go in, absolutely, and you'd be getting a shotgun round,' Daza-Quiroz said." (10/18/22)

Source: Silicon Republic

"Microsoft reportedly plans to cut fewer than 1,000 jobs across a range of levels and fields – coming just months after a revenue slowdown. Microsoft is the latest tech company to make job cuts amid ongoing economic uncertainty. Confirmed by a spokesperson to media outlets, the job cuts come less than three months after Microsoft reported its slowest quarterly revenue growth since 2020. The company blamed 'unfavourable foreign exchange rate movement' as well as extended production shutdowns in China as well as a slowdown in PC and gaming sales. Around this time, Microsoft also announced that it had trimmed less than 1pc of its employees. Now, the company has confirmed that it has cut additional jobs." (10/18/22)

19) KY: Dairyman Saves His Farm and Herd by Selling Raw Milk
Source: The Pamphleteer

"Six years ago, Mike Armstrong, owner and operator of Moo2U Dairy and 3rd generation dairy farmer, quit selling milk to Purity and entered the very niche market of selling raw milk directly to customers. In doing so, Armstrong saved his dying business and discovered a superior model for dairy farming. For nearly his whole life, Armstrong sold his milk to Purity which pasteurized it and put it on grocery store shelves. As a commercial dairy farmer, he was at the mercy of what Purity would pay, a price that dipped and swelled often, and on more than one occasion, left him unable to cover his costs. In 2014, the price sank like a stone again and remained there forcing many commercial dairy farmers to shutter their doors. Out of desperation, Armstrong pivoted from selling his milk to Purity to selling raw milk directly to customers." (10/18/22)

20) Australia: Regime reverses recognition of West Jerusalem as Israeli capital
Source: CNN

"The Australian government has reversed a decision by its predecessor to recognize West Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, prompting a rebuke from the Israeli government. Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong reaffirmed Canberra's 'previous and long-standing position' on Israel in a briefing on Tuesday, emphasizing the new Labor government's unwavering support both for Israel and the Palestinian people. 'Australia is committed to a two-state solution in which Israel and a future Palestinian state coexist, in peace and security, within internationally recognized borders,' Wong said. 'We will not support an approach that undermines this prospect.' The previous government, led by former Coalition Prime Minister Scott Morrison, recognized West Jerusalem as the Israeli capital in 2018, following an announcement made by former US President Donald Trump." 21) A Theory of Cancel Culture
Source: Bet On It
by Bryan Caplan

"The standard U.S. real estate commission is 6%. That means a $1M house costs $60,000 to sell. How is this possible?! Two of my colleagues at UT's Salem Center, John Hatfield and Richard Lowery, along with their co-author Scott Kominers, offer an explanation in their 'Collusion in Brokered Markets.' Despite the vast number of realtors, HKL argue that collusion can be sustained because competing realtors typically need to cooperate to sell houses. It's a classic network industry. Due to this interdependency, realtors can arrange the following 'network exclusion' strategy to deter discounting: (a) Refuse to cooperate with any realtor who discounts. (b) Refuse to cooperate with any realtor who cooperates with any realtor who discounts. In other words, punish the discounter and punish anyone who fails to punish the discounter." (10/18/22)

22) So Long as There are Nukes, We Had Better Hope We Live in a MAD World
Source: Garrison Center
by Thomas L Knapp

"[T]he notion that hey, maybe we could live with nukes being used here and there, in very special cases, by very special regimes, and just pile on some more sanctions or throw a non-nuclear cruise missile or two at the rogue state to express displeasure, is madness ... which is the opposite of MADness. The way -- the  ONLY way -- to get through this crisis or any other without popping the cork on Armageddon is for every regime decision-maker  in the world to know, down in their guts, beyond a shadow of  doubt, that if they use nukes, nukes will be used on them. Even that might not work, but it's the only thing that ever HAS worked." (10/18/22)

23) Fauci Claims He Had "Nothing to Do" With School Closures. His Own Statements Suggest Otherwise

"'I ask anybody to go back over the number of times that I have said we've got to do everything we can to keep the schools open, no one plays that clip,' Fauci told [Jonathan] Karl. 'They always come back and say, 'Fauci was responsible for closing schools.' I had nothing to do [with it].' Fauci may not have sat on a school board or wielded police power during the pandemic, but his claim that he bears no responsibility for school closing takes chutzpah. It's undeniable that many schools, cities, and state governments shut down schools precisely because of what the White House's top medical advisor was saying, and what Fauci was saying was clear." "If you are looking for a history of libertarian thought to gain a greater appreciation for a philosophy you already adhere to and lock in your priors -- one that is written by someone who was as deeply moved by it as you were -- then Burning Down The House is not the book for you. (If that's the kind of thing you want, I'd suggest you read Radicals For Capitalism by Brian Doherty.) 25) Why Republicans should support descheduling marijuana
Source: Orange County Register
by Mark Meuser

"President Biden recently announced that he was pardoning anyone who had been charged with simple possession of marijuana and no other crime. In doing so, Biden reignited the debate on whether marijuana should be descheduled. As a constitutionalist, it is clear that Congress never had the authority to make marijuana a federal crime to possess. Those who believe that the constitution is the supreme law of the land should be among the first to throw their support towards descheduling marijuana. Many 'law and order' Republicans have been slow to jump on the bandwagon to deschedule marijuana. There are many arguments out there, including the need to protect our children from marijuana's harmful effects. However, just because something is harmful to children, does not mean that the federal government should be allowed to regulate the issue." (10/18/22)

26) Profoundly Stupid Narrative: Nuclear Brinkmanship Is Safety & De-Escalation Is Danger
Source: Caitlin Johnstone, Rogue Journalist
by Caitlin Johnstone

"Of all the face-meltingly stupid narratives that have been circulated about the US proxy war in Ukraine, the dumbest so far has got to be the increasingly common claim that aggressively escalating nuclear brinkmanship is safety and de-escalation is danger. We see a prime example of this self-evidently idiotic narrative in a new Business Insider article titled 'Putin's nuclear threats are pushing people like Trump and Elon Musk to press for a Ukraine peace deal. A nuclear expert warns that's 'dangerous." 'An understandable desire to avoid a nuclear war could actually make the world more dangerous if it means rushing to implement a 'peace' in Ukraine that serves Russian interests,' writes reliable empire apologist Charles Davis. ... Davis'[s] sole source for his article is the UN Institute for Disarmament Research's Pavel Podvig, who is very openly biased against Russia." (10/18/22)

27) Home Runs First: How the Four-Bagger Leads to the Real Thing
Source: TomDispatch
by Robert Lipsyte

"The time has come to ban The Bomb. Of course, all those nuclear ones in the arsenals of the 'great' powers, but (since I'm a sportswriter by trade) let's start with the home run. Call it a four-bagger, a dinger, a moon shot, or (in my childhood) a Ballantine blast for the beer that sponsored so much baseball. One thing is certain, though: the dream of the game-changing home run has shaped our approach to so much, from sports to geopolitics. Most significantly, it's damaged our ability to solve problems through reason and diplomacy. So, consider banning both The Bomb and the home run as the first crucial steps toward a safer, more peaceful world." (10/18/22)

28) National Controversy over Nationwide Injunctions
Source: Independent Institute
by Jonathan Fuentes

"Plaintiffs combatting government actions are increasingly requesting preliminary relief with nationwide injunctions. Such a trend has started stirring debate concerning how appropriate a legal remedy nationwide injunctions are. Despite their name, nationwide or national injunctions are not defined by geography. Instead, nationwide injunctions are best understood as a court order against the federal government which instructs the government to act or prohibits the government from doing something." 29) The Anti-Communist Interventionist Racket Continues
Source: Future of Freedom Foundation
by Jacob G Hornberger

"New Jersey Congressman Albio Sires is complaining about financial aid that international agencies are providing Nicaragua under what he says is 'the pretext of poverty reduction, disaster relief and small business support.' He points to Nicaragua's dictatorial regime headed by socialist Daniel Ortega as the reason for his complaints. Sires is right to complain about foreign aid to Nicaragua, but why limit a critique of governmental aid to Nicaragua? Why not terminate all U.S. foreign aid to every international agency and every foreign regime, including regimes that do the bidding of U.S. officials?" (10/18/22)

30) Charles Blow expands the "accusatory net of racism"
Source: Fox News Forum

"So what happens when you're running out of white racists? ... Well, when you run out of white racists, like Doritos, you got to make more. That means it's time for 'This Guy Blows!' ... Yep. Charles Blow is the worst writer in America. It's either him or the guy who keeps writing 'dwarf' on my office door. Tyrus. But Blow, whose name is short for blowing smoke up his own ass, takes a tale involving Latino leaders in L.A. making bigoted remarks about Blacks and calls it proof of white supremacy. Yes, a Latina smears a black person. But that's white racism, making white supremacy look more diverse than a 1980s Benetton ad." (10/18/22)

31) Supreme Court Decided to Keep Torture A Secret
Source: Brownstone Institute
by James Masnov

"In United States v. Zubaydah (03/03/2022), the majority of the Court, including most of its conservative wing and most of its progressive wing, ruled that disclosing torture operations by the CIA against accused terrorist Abu Zubaydah in Poland in 2002 and 2003 would be harmful to national security. Thus, it could remain officially a state secret, even as the events have been corroborated by numerous news outlets and investigators over many years. The events have been openly discussed. One notable and recent example is Alex Gibney's documentary about the treatment of Zubaydah by the CIA that was released through HBO in 2021. Despite the facts of the case being about as open of a secret as one could imagine, the Court nevertheless ruled that disclosing it officially would be a threat to US national security." (10/18/22)

32) Inflated Hopes and Burst Bubbles
Source: American Institute for Economic Research
by Alexander William Salter

"September's inflation numbers aren't good. Prices rose 8.2 percent year-over-year, down slightly from the last release, yet still painful. The biggest news is 'core' inflation, which excludes volatile food and energy prices. Core inflation hit 6.6 percent year-over-year, the highest since 1982. High core inflation suggests price pressures are broad-based, rather than limited to a few supply-constrained areas of the economy. What can we expect the Fed to do? Despite angry noises from the peanut gallery, the central bank will almost certainly continue to tighten." (10/18/22)

33) Democrats Are Failing This Key Rule of Communication
Source: Common Dreams
by Thom Hartmann

"Republicans are pulling ahead in the polls right now because of the issues of the economy, crime, and homelessness, according to a new New York Times/Siena College poll published just yesterday. More than a year ago, I wrote about this very danger in an article titled, 'A Crime Wave Could Take Down the Democrats in 2022.' Democrats must start addressing crime and homelessness right now, and the most effective way to pull it off is to fold it into a holistic message that includes two more issues: say, the economy/inflation and the environment -- so that they're making use of 'the rule of threes.'" 34) Public opinion hasn't changed on abortion. The Republican Party has
Source: The Hill
by John Kenneth White

"After the Supreme Court's 1973 Roe v. Wade decision, there has been nearly a half-century of polling on abortion. While many are skeptical of polling generally ... on certain issues there is a consistency to the results. In 2014, the American Enterprise Institute led by Karlyn Bowman, a renowned survey research expert, analyzed the abortion data and found most respondents preferred that 'the choice should be left up to the woman and her doctor.' From 1990 to 2009, the percentage choosing that option never fell below 50 percent. But the public did not support abortion-on-demand during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy. Instead, persistent majorities believed abortions should be allowed only when 'a woman's health is seriously endangered;' when 'there is a strong chance of a serious defect;' or when the pregnancy is the result of rape or incest." 35) Ukraine Is the World's Foreign-Policy Rorschach Test
Source: Foreign Policy
by Stephen M Walt

"Like nearly everything else in politics these days, discussions of the war in Ukraine often devolve into nasty rounds of name-calling. If you say you are worried about escalation, aren't convinced that Russian President Vladimir Putin's ultimate goal is to restore the old Soviet empire, and voice concerns that the war is a costly and potentially dangerous distraction from other foreign-policy priorities, then you'll probably be accused of being an appeaser, an apologist for Moscow, or something even worse. By contrast, if you favor open-ended Western support for Ukraine, dismiss the possibility of escalation, and believe the war must continue until Russia suffers a decisive defeat and Putin is ousted, your critics will denounce you as a warmonger whose disregard for costs and risks could get us all vaporized." 36) Was There Ever a Neoliberal Order?
Source: Law & Liberty
by Ralph L DeFalco III

"Academic Gary Gerstle's new book, The Rise and Fall of the Neoliberal Order: America and the World in the Free Market Era, is wholly shaped by his claim that American political history since 1930 has been dominated by two political orders, each 'a constellation of ideologies, policies, and constituencies that shape American politics in ways that endure ... beyond election cycles.' That the whole of the last nearly 100 years of American political history can be neatly accounted for in a discussion of just two political orders is startling. According to Gerstle, the two American political orders -- the New Deal order (1930-1980) and the neoliberal order (1980-2020) -- were, in their essence characterized by a 'distinctive program of political economy.'" 37) The Left [sic] Using Science "Consensus" To Shut Down Free Speech in America
Source: Town Hall
by Stephen Moore

"It was about eight to 10 years ago that the Left [sic] made a unilateral decision to shut down all opposition and any skepticism about climate change by pronouncing that the debate was over. The 'scientific consensus' had been reached, as if sent down on tablets from God, that mankind was causing the rapid warming of the planet. Period. End of argument. Doubters will be denounced as science deniers and stripped of their science credentials and muzzled by the speech police. This idea of a scientific consensus is, of course, the diametric opposite of what scientific inquiry is all about. It is completely ahistorical. History's greatest minds and inventors were people who challenged the conventional wisdom of the day." (10/18/22)

38) It's Never "Just a Joke"
Source: The Dispatch
by Kevin D Williamson

"Iliza Shlesinger's latest Netflix comedy special contains much that will be familiar -- tediously familiar, in fact -- and something surprising, too: a long, sincere, heartfelt ode to ... Social Darwinism. The comedian directly addresses so-called incels, or 'involuntarily celibates.' She notes that a few of those unhappy and sexless men have carried out mass shootings -- and insists that their inability to find mates is nature's way of saying 'there should be no more people like you.' Just so. 'You didn't adapt,' she sneers. ... It is probably unnecessary to note at this late date that in spite of Shlesinger's name-dropping Charles Darwin, Social Darwinism is not and never has been an idea with any real scientific merit. That it is morally indefensible as well as intellectually indefensible is relatively easy to understand if you direct the concept at some population you do not hate ..." (10/18/22)

39) The CIA's hypocrisy on "sources and methods"
Source: Responsible Statecraft
by William Neuheisel

"Reuters recently published new reporting on the story of one of the worst U.S. intelligence failures in decades. From approximately 2010 to 2013, dozens of CIA informants in China, Iran, and elsewhere were rounded up and executed, jailed, or flipped to double agents. In Iran and China, almost the entirety of the CIA's network in two of its top-priority countries are reported to have been exposed. Some in the U.S. government seemed to try to pin much of the blame on a betrayal by CIA officer Jerry Lee, who was later prosecuted and pleaded guilty to spying on behalf of the Chinese government. But Lee's alleged espionage could not account for all the sources blown. In a series of articles published by the New York Times, Foreign Policy, and Yahoo! News, another explanation emerged: an astonishing laxity of source protection at the CIA itself." (10/18/22)

41) Shuckin' and Jivin' All the Way to a Runoff in Georgia?
Source: The American Prospect
by Gabrielle Gurley

"Flashing a badge, apparently, does not render its bearer any braver. So Herschel Walker, Georgia's Republican Senate candidate, skipped a second debate on Sunday with Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock and the Libertarian candidate, Chase Oliver. The Georgia Public Broadcasting-Atlanta Press Club producers took advantage of the opportunity to include numerous camera angles of the two men and the empty podium during what proved to be a civil, mostly informative forum. It was a far cry from last Friday's Nexstar Media forum .... In the waning weeks of the country's midterm election campaigns, no scene could be more cringeworthy than a shuckin' and jivin' Herschel Walker flashing an honorary badge as if it gave him superhero crime-fighting powers. Walker was manifestly unable to explain why he should be sharing the stage with an actual U.S. senator, while Warnock exhibited the restraint one might expect from a preacher-turned-politician." 42) "Pro-Democracy" Journalism's Problem With the Facts
Source: Reason
by Matt Welch

"It takes all of two paragraphs in her memoir-cum-polemic Newsroom Confidential for press critic Margaret Sullivan to unwittingly undermine her thesis that journalism in the age of Donald Trump needs to 'shout ... from the rooftops' that the fate of democracy itself hinges on the victory of truth over (mostly right-wing) lies. ... How can journalists (and news consumers) break the self-reinforcing doom-loop between media and citizen? It's a damnably hard and important question. Sullivan articulated one sound approach back in September 2012: 'The more news organizations can state established truths and stand by them,' she wrote in one of her first pieces as New York Times public editor, "the better off the readership -- and the democracy -- will be.' Ten years on, Sullivan emphasizes more the confidence of asserting truths rather than the meticulousness of marshaling the supporting evidence." (10/18/22)

"While 2022 has already seen its fair share of horror in the ongoing Russo-Ukraine War, this winter might see the further rise of a new specter: civil war. German social researcher Piotr Kocyba expects a new, violent wave of protests as the continent turns colder. Kocyba, who works at the Chemnitz University of Technology and is a member of the board of the Berlin Institute for Protest and Movement Research, claims that right-wing extremists are already heating up the mood, but the left also wants to call citizens to street demonstrations. ... Europe has seen a series of escalating social crises in the past ten years, from major cost-of-living increases, to mass immigration, to the pandemic lockdowns. "Because the Biden administration entered office determined to do everything differently from the previous administration, its major policies have become tangled knots of self-contradiction. Since the Democratic Party had so heavily invested in the evil of Russia and President Trump's supposed coziness with the Kremlin (a complete and defamatory fiction), it was peculiar and absurd that Russia was invited to act as the intermediary of the United States in the new administration's poorly thought out ambition to put the nuclear arms deferral agreement with Iran, back together. "Presidents and their families enjoy all sorts of benefits -- such as travel on Air Force One -- that are not available to the average American. (In a sense, these are fringe benefits for a job that pays far less than market rate for the responsibilities.) They are also entitled to Secret Service protection, which has its own price tag but is a necessity. From time to time, partisans gripe about presidents of the other party vacationing in this or that exotic locale, but that's the usual disingenuous push-and-pull of politics. What is different about Trump's charges to the Secret Service is that he wasn't simply enjoying a nice vacation on the public dime. He was directing cash straight to his own pocket." (10/17/22)

Source: Cato Institute
by Nicholas Anthony

"For further evidence of the U.S. government's embrace of a culture of financial surveillance and control, one need only look at recent cryptocurrency reports written by the Department of the Treasury and the Department of Justice. The cryptocurrency reports were issued in response to an executive order from President Biden in March -- an order that required a host of agencies to issue reports on competition, consumer protection, illicit finance, and the future of the U.S. dollar and cryptocurrencies, alike. Although some people were cheering the president for his decision to seek out more information, the executive order was far from a hall pass for the nascent industry -- cryptocurrency users, developers, and businesses were still very much in lawmakers' crosshairs. At best, it merely bought time. Now, six months later, several of the executive order's required reports have been released and few people are still cheering." (10/17/22)

"Sanctions have become a favorite tool of Washington and its allies to punish governments that do not comply with its dictates. The use of sanctions is up nearly 1000% over the past two decades. Currently, the White House has 'maximum pressure' sanctions on Russia, Iran, Venezuela, North Korea, Cuba and Syria. Those penalties target governments that the US would like to see overthrown, undermined or locked out of international markets. Under President Donald Trump, Washington started a trade war with China, mainly using tariffs. However, sanctions have proven ineffective in producing regime change. Typically, economic wars have impoverished average citizens and empowered government institutions in target nations." (10/17/22)
