1) “Border Patrol” gang shot-caller, some gang members flee Minneapolis in wake of murders
Source: New York Post
“The US Border Patrol’s chief Greg Bovino and some agents have been ordered out of Minneapolis in a stunning turnaround after a second US citizen was [murdered] by federal agents in the city this month, according to reports. The order does not extend to ICE and it does not include all Border Patrol agents. However, Bovino will be joining the agents ‘imminently’ marching out of the state, Fox reported. … Chaos has reigned in the Minnesota city since Jan. 7 when anti-ICE protestor and mother-of-three Renee Good, 37, was murdered] by an ICE agent …. A second American, armed ICU nurse Pretti, was [murdered] Saturday …” (01/26/26)

2) Ukraine: Russian attack on Kharkiv causes mass power outages
Source: Reuters
“Russian drones and missile strikes on Monday hit Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, knocking out power to 80% of the city and surrounding region and striking apartment buildings, a school and a kindergarten, local officials said. Two people were injured, Regional Governor Oleh Syniehubov said in a video posted on the Telegram messaging app.” (01/27/26)

3) Bitcoin remains coiled under $88,500 as gold tops $5,000, silver gives back gains
Source: CoinDesk
“Bitcoin slipped to about $88,400 in early-week trading, extending a roughly 4% decline over the past week as major cryptocurrencies softened. The token’s underperformance versus rising equities and surging gold underscores that crypto is trading more like a high-beta risk asset than a safe-haven hedge. Traders are cautious and volumes muted ahead of Wednesday’s Federal Reserve decision and a wave of Big Tech earnings, events seen as key catalysts for bitcoin’s next move.” (01/27/26)

4) ICC judges find former Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte fit to stand trial
Source: Seattle Times
“Judges at the International Criminal Court ruled on Monday that former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte is fit to stand trial, after postponing an earlier hearing over concerns about the octogenarian’s health. Duterte is facing charges of crimes against humanity for his alleged involvement in dozens of killings as part of his so-called war on drugs when in office, first as the mayor of a southern city and later as president. Lawyers for the 80-year old had argued Duterte was in frail health and his condition was deteriorating in the court’s detention unit.” (01/26/26)

5) Lebanon: Regime files UN complaint against Israeli regime’s daily ceasefire violations
Source: Al Jazeera [Qatari state media]
“Lebanon has filed a complaint with the United Nations about repeated Israeli violations of a November 2024 ceasefire, calling on the Security Council to push Israel to end its attacks and fully withdraw from the country. The Lebanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants said the complaint, sent on Monday, stressed that Israeli abuses are a ‘clear’ violation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which ended a war between Israel and Hezbollah in 2006. … Despite the 2024 ceasefire, the Israeli military has been launching near-daily attacks in Lebanon, which have killed hundreds of people. In November last year, the UN put the number of civilians killed in Israeli attacks at at least 127.” (01/26/26)

6) FL: Regime seeks to ban “West Bank” from official vocabulary
Source: The New Arab [UK]
“A measure is being advanced in the Florida legislature to officially recognise the term ‘Judea and Samaria’ and ban ‘West Bank’ in official state documents. The name change, which has strong support in both chambers of the Florida state legislature, would mean that all official documents, including press releases, school textbooks, and library materials, would refer to the area west of the Jordan River by its biblical names, Judea and Samaria. … Supporters of the bill say it seeks to recognise a historic location, while critics say it is a tactic to erase Palestinian identity—and possibly further Israeli control over the West Bank, which it has occupied since 1967 (and expanding illegal settlements ever since).” (01/26/26)

7) Myanmar: Military-backed party secures “election” “win” with opposition excluded
Source: ABC News
“Myanmar’s military-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party claimed Monday that it had won the country’s first election since the army seized power in 2021, paving the way for a new government. The victory of the party led by a former general was widely expected after the vote excluded major opposition parties and dissent was tightly restricted. Also, 25% of parliamentary seats were automatically reserved for the military — effectively guaranteeing control by the armed forces and its favored parties. Critics say the polls organized by the military government were neither free nor fair, but an effort to legitimize its rule after seizing power from the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi. The takeover triggered widespread opposition that dragged Myanmar into a civil war.” (01/26/26)

8) SCOTUS to take up 1988 privacy law case
Source: USA Today
“The Supreme Court will decide whether a 1988 privacy law spurred by the disclosure of a high court nominee’s video rental history should be applied to digital videos watched on a free website. The court on Jan. 26 agreed to review a lower court’s ruling that the Video Privacy Protection Act can’t be used to sue a sports website for sharing a user’s video-watching history with Facebook. After President Ronald Reagan nominated Robert Bork to the high court in 1987, a journalist obtained from his local video store a list of films Bork had rented. Congress responded by creating stiff penalties for any ‘video tape service provider’ who discloses personal information about their customers without consent.” (01/26/26)

9) Treasury cancels Booz Allen contracts after employee leaked Trump tax records; stock falls
Source: CNBC
“Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Monday said he had cancelled all Treasury Department contracts with the consulting firm Booz Allen Hamilton, one of whose employees leaked the tax records of President Donald Trump, and the billionaires Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk, to media outlets. Booz Allen Hamilton’s stock price dropped by 8% on the heels of the Treasury Department’s announcement. The department said it currently has 31 separate contracts with Booz Allen Hamilton, totaling $4.8 million in annual spending and $21 million in total obligations. … The department noted that between 2018 and 2020, Booz Allen employee Charles Edward Littlejohn ‘stole and leaked the confidential tax returns and return information of hundreds of thousands of taxpayers.’ The data breach affected about 406,000 taxpayers, according to the IRS. Littlejohn, 40, pleaded guilty in October 2023 to one count of disclosure of tax return information.” (01/26/26)

“Senate Majority Leader John Kavanagh, R-Fountain Hills, called on Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes to resign after she said people who feel [sic] they are in danger are legally allowed to shoot masked federal law enforcement officers. Mayes made these comments in an interview with 12News, where she said, ‘We have a Stand Your Ground law that says that if you reasonably believe that your life is in danger and you’re in your house or your car or on your property, that you can defend yourself with lethal force.’ … Her comments are ‘putting the lives of federal and local law enforcement officers engaged in such dangerous work at risk,’ the state senator explained. ‘She needs to recant her statement and resign in disgrace,’ Kavanagh said.” [editor’s note: Well, SOMEONE does – TLK] (01/26/26)

“Israel on Monday confirmed that the remains of Staff Sgt. Ran Gvili, the last Israeli hostage held in Gaza, have been recovered and returned home after 842 days. Gvili, who was 24 at the time of his death, served as an Israel Police officer and was killed during fighting on Oct. 7, 2023, after confronting Hamas terrorists near Kibbutz Alumim, according to a statement from the Hostages and Missing Families Forum. His body was later abducted to Gaza. … The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said following the completion of an identification process conducted by Israel’s National Institute of Forensic Medicine, in coordination with police and military authorities, that officials informed the Gvili family that their loved one’s remains had been identified and would be returned for burial.” (01/26/26)

Salamanca Mayor Cesar Prieto said in a statement posted to social platforms that the gunmen arrived at the end of a soccer match. … Four bags containing human remains were also found Saturday night in the same town. 13) Appeals court won’t reconsider Habba disqualification, paving way to SCOTUS
Source: The Hill
“A federal appeals court has declined to reconsider a three-judge panel’s decision to uphold Alina Habba’s disqualification as the top federal prosecutor in New Jersey, paving the way for the Justice Department to take President Trump’s fight to retain loyalist U.S. attorneys to the Supreme Court. In a terse order Monday, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 3rd Circuit said the judges who ruled that Habba, a former personal attorney to Trump, was unlawfully appointed as U.S. attorney for New Jersey did not ask to rehear the case. A majority of judges voted against putting the matter in front of the full court, as well. … The decision keeps intact the panel’s ruling that Habba’s tenure became unlawful when she remained in the role after her 120-day interim term expired, despite the ‘novel series of legal and personnel moves’ the administration took to keep her in the job.” (01/26/26)

14) UK: Former Tory home secretary Suella Braverman defects to Reform
Source: Independent [UK]
“Controversial former home secretary Suella Braverman has become the latest ex-Tory right-winger to defect to Nigel Farage’s Reform. After months of speculation, Ms Braverman, who once ran for the leadership of the Conservative Party, has joined her ally Robert Jenrick in switching parties. She was unveiled at a Reform rally for veterans in London as the party’s eighth sitting MP, having been a rare visitor to parliament in the last few months. … Speculation had been rife about Ms Braverman joining Reform since her husband Rael became a member last year, but it cooled when the party’s former chair Mr Yusuf issued a series of very personal attacks against her, which saw Mr Braverman quit the party in protest. A Tory source claimed: ‘Suella would have joined Reform sooner but the status of Rael was clearly a sticking point because they would have to let him rejoin the party as well.'” (01/26/26)

15) Nigeria: Officers to face trial over coup plot allegations
Source: BBC News [UK state media]
“A group of officers in Nigeria are set to face a military court after being accused of ‘plotting to overthrow the government’ of President Bola Tinubu last year, an armed forces’ statement has said.
Sixteen officers were arrested last October after what were described as ‘acts of indiscipline and breaches of service regulations.’ At the time the military dismissed rumours of an attempted coup, but following an investigation, the authorities have acknowledged that some of the 16 will go before a military judicial panel. Nigeria has a complex history of military involvement in politics, with multiple coups between 1966 and 1993, which has made allegations of coup‑plotting highly sensitive.” (01/26/26)

“It seems Sydney Sweeney will do almost anything to promote her upcoming lingerie line. In a video obtained by TMZ, the ‘Euphoria’ actress appeared to climb the iconic Hollywood sign in the dead of night in an effort to share a message ahead of the upcoming launch. Sweeney — wearing black cargo pants, a black hoodie and a black hat — hung a clothesline of bras over the sign all while being filmed. According to TMZ, Sweeney and her team received a permit from FilmLA to shoot near the Hollywood sign. However, they did not have permission to climb or touch the sign. Bush as ‘failed and uninspiring.’ But if it were not for the ‘innovations’ of Bush’s presidency, crafted nearly a quarter-century ago, Trump would not have had the instruments of domestic warfare and ethnic cleansing that he’s been using with impunity.” (01/26/26)

“Almost everyone embraces ‘cultural’ critiques of capitalism. The left has ‘cultural studies;’;the right has the mantra, ‘We’re a country, not an economy.’ The upshot, in both cases, is that government ought to do something about culture. Freeze it in place? Force it to progress? Turn back the clock? My latest book of essays, You Have No Right to Your Culture: Essays on the Human Condition, flips this narrative. Source: Law & Liberty
by Jay Cost
“What is the proper role of the judiciary in American political life? There has never been a clear answer to that question, even among the founders. The Constitution itself has relatively little to say about the judiciary, delegating most of its design and much of its authority to congressional action. Alexander Hamilton in Federalist #78 argued that the judiciary could resolve disputes arising under the Constitution. But James Madison in Federalist #51 suggested that many such questions should be settled by the political process. Thomas Jefferson, in retirement, was aghast at the sweeping rhetoric of McCulloch v. Maryland, in which his cousin, Chief Justice John Marshall, employed Hamiltonian reasoning to legitimize the Bank of the United States.” (01/26/26)

35) Insect Loss As an Early Warning of Systemic Biological Failure
Source: Brownstone Institute
by Joseph Varon
“n medicine, silence can be more alarming than noise. For example, a patient who abruptly stops voicing discomfort or a monitor that ceases activity may signal system failure rather than resolution. Ecology presents a similar scenario, and currently, the silence is deeply concerning. Insects are disappearing across vast regions globally. This is not a modest decline or a simple geographic shift, but a rapid vanishing of beetles, butterflies, moths, flies, mosquitoes, bees, and entire functional groups. This phenomenon is not speculative or anecdotal; it is among the most consistently documented biological trends of the past 50 years and remains insufficiently addressed.” (01/26/26)

36) The US Must Return to a Gold Standard
Source: Ludwig von Mises Institute
by Patrick Barron
“The purchasing power of the US dollar has been debased by over 99 percent since the foundation of the Federal Reserve. (An ounce of gold cost $20.67 in 1913. According to the Wall Street Journal as of Friday, January 16 its price was $4,588.40. That means that the dollar is worth less than one half of one percent of its 1913 purchasing power [$20.67/$4,588.40=.0045]). Its remaining purchasing power may eventually become zero. There is no discipline in US spending and the Fed has become a willing accomplice to this crime.” (01/26/26)

37) Today In Republicans Being Useless: GOPers Cower To Anti-ICE Info Ops
Source: The Federalist
by Shawn Fleetwood
“Donald Trump ran on a platform of mass deporting illegal aliens from the United States during the 2024 election, and as such, the voters of Oklahoma supported his efforts to do so. In fact, every single county in the Sooner State backed Trump and his policies over the open border approach of Democrat Kamala Harris. So, if Oklahoma voters have made their support for enforcing America’s immigration laws abundantly clear, why is their ‘Republican’ governor going on legacy media to cower before the left’s latest anti-ICE info op?” [editor’s note: I’m old enough to remember a time when the Federalist Society at least occasionally pretended to be kinda-sorta, a little bit, in a way, federalist – TLK] (01/26/26)

38) Not This King?
Source: Common Sense
by Paul Jacob
“Throughout President Donald Trump’s first term, I recall shouts that he had overstepped his authority under the law only to discover, oftentimes, that the power he was wielding had been bestowed upon our president by a feckless Congress. What I found even more disconcerting was that at no time did those complaining seek to limit these excessive presidential powers. It appears, as Sarah Isgur suggested, that their concern was not with an imperial presidency, only with this current person as that imperial president.” (01/26/26)

39) “Chairman Trump” and a Dystopian Vision for Gaza Without Gazans
Source: Antiwar.com
by Alan Mosley
“When Donald Trump strode into the World Economic Forum in Davos this January flanked by Jared Kushner and other confidants, it was ostensibly to sign a charter establishing a ‘Board of Peace.’ The document, hailed by its backers as a technocratic alternative to decades of dead‑end diplomacy, promises ‘pragmatic judgment’ and a ‘nimble and effective’ institution to rebuild war‑torn Gaza. The preamble reads like an attempt to imitate the United Nations Charter without its collective obligations. Beneath that veneer, the charter sets up a structure that concentrates virtually all authority in the hands of its chairman, Donald J. Trump, and relegates Palestinians to spectators while foreign investors draw up the blueprints for their homeland.” (01/26/26)

Source: Foreign Policy
by Julian E Zelizer
“The horror of watching a U.S. citizen die at the hands of federal or state officials transcends ordinary politics. Such a ruthless deployment of power not only evokes deep and widespread human emotion but also collides directly with fundamental U.S. values rooted in the Constitution, especially the commitment to protecting individual liberties from government abuse.” (01/26/26)

41) Memphis’s different take on a federal surge
Source: Christian Science Monitor
by the editorial board
“Americans have long struggled with notions of ‘local justice.’ Should state or federal laws sometimes bend to a community’s sensibilities and priorities? In Minneapolis, recent instances of violence by immigration enforcement agents, and sometimes by protesters, point to a federal-local split over immigration policies, not to mention which branch of law enforcement should investigate the violent acts. … Yet, for every standoff like the current one in Minneapolis, there are today examples of cooperation in implementing law – whether federal, state, or local.” (01/26/26)

43) Immigration: The Federal Solution
Source: David Friedman’s Substack
by David Friedman
“The conflict over immigration has become something close to a civil war, with the federal government blocking state action against federal agents arguably guilty of murder. The immediate source of the conflict is a sharp difference in attitudes to illegal immigration between the inhabitants of Minneapolis, possibly of Minnesota, and the executive arm of the federal government. The less immediate source is a broader political split between left and right, blue tribe and red tribe. The accepted way to deal with that situation is through the electoral system. … A better solution is federalism. For the current conflict, that means deporting illegal immigrants from Florida, where the state government supports doing so, ignoring them in Minnesota and California, where the state government and, I suspect, a substantial majority of the population, do not.” (01/25/26)

44) Radically Confronting America’s Federal Gang War Will Require Civilian Militias
Source: exile in happy valley
by Nicky Reid
“America is in the grips of an epic gang war the likes of which it has never seen before. Masked and heavily armed thugs stock the streets of some of America’s biggest cities with total impunity, thousands of them, tossing houses door to door, dragging unarmed civilians screaming from their vehicles before shoving them into unmarked vans, lighting up anyone who dares to resist and straight up murdering people on camera before sauntering off from the scene of the crime like swaggering cowboys and daring shocked bystanders to do something about it … The gangs I’m talking about are not the Crips or the Bloods or MS-13. The gangs I’m talking about are far worse.” (01/25/26)

45) Team Trump moves to ban traffic cameras in DC — as NYC’s set to quadruple the dangerous devices
Source: New York Post
by James Bovard
“The Trump administration may soon reduce highway robbery by 95% in Washington, DC. The Big Apple needs the same silver bullet because the city’s drivers could speedily be victimized by the biggest bureaucratic looting spree of the century. Trump’s Transportation Department proposes to ‘prohibit the operation of automated traffic camera enforcement in the District of Columbia,’ which would ban red-light, speed and stop-sign cameras. Rep. Scott Perry (R-Pa.) is attaching a similar provision to congressional transportation legislation. The dispute over red-light and speed cameras goes to the heart of the question of how much harm politicians are entitled to inflict while they shake money out of citizens’ pockets.” (01/26/26)

46) Governing at gunpoint: ICE in Minneapolis
Source: Orange County Register
by Abigail R Hall & Patrick S Ward
“Minneapolis is reeling as masked, heavily armed ICE agents flood immigrant neighborhoods, pulling people from cars, entering homes, and clashing with protesters and observers. Businesses have shuttered, school districts have shifted online, and candlelight memorials mark civilians killed during federal operations. Now President Trump has threatened to invoke the Insurrection Act and deploy federal troops, framing the unrest as an ‘insurrection’ led by ‘professional agitators.’ The message is clear: escalating force is being cast as governance. But we have been here before.” (01/25/26)

47) Trump’s Credit Card Rate Cap
Source: Foundation for Economic Education
by Louis Rouanet
“On January 9, President Donald Trump called for a 10% cap on credit card interest rates — a drop from the 2025 average of 19.7%. This reflects growing political support within the fringes of both the Republican and Democratic Parties for such anti-market policies. In February 2025, Senators Bernie Sanders and Josh Hawley also introduced legislation mirroring Trump’s proposal. Supporters of price controls like to blame ‘greedy’ corporations. Trump told reporters that credit card companies ‘really abused the public.’ Unfortunately, his proposal treats symptoms while ignoring the disease, and that will ultimately harm the very consumers it claims to protect.” (01/25/26)

48) An America First Case for Ending the Cuban Embargo
Source: The American Conservative
by Reed Lindsay
“For decades, Washington’s economic war on Cuba has weakened a government that has arguably been our most reliable security partner in the Caribbean. Instead of increasing America’s leverage, tougher sanctions have made Cuba less stable—and the United States less secure—by destabilizing the island’s economy, accelerating unprecedented migration to the U.S. border, undermining counternarcotics efforts, hurting U.S. companies, and incentivizing closer relations with Russia and China. A truly failed Cuban state just 90 miles from our coast would probably generate even greater blowback. Current Cuba policy is rooted not in our core national interests, but in Cold War nostalgia and Florida politics.” (01/25/26)

49) Immigration and the Invasion Story
Source: TomDispatch
by Patrick Strickland
“After a year of gutting the United States government, deploying armed jackboots to American cities, and bombing at least seven countries, the Trump administration kicked off 2026 by invading Venezuela and kidnapping its president, Nicolás Maduro, and his wife, Cilia Flores. In the wake of that assault, President Trump doubled down on his abandonment of the isolationist positions he once supposedly held, threatening military action against Colombia, Cuba, Iran, and Mexico. He then vowed that the U.S. would come to “own” Greenland either ‘the easy way’ or ‘the hard way.’ In truth, American imperialism defines much of this country’s history, but the latest escalation comes at a time when Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents have also been deployed around the nation to grab immigrants off the streets and whisk them to detention centers.” (01/26/26)
