0)  Year-End Fundraiser Update: If at first you don't succeed ...

THANK YOU to long-time supporters GC, T, and CM! Their contributions over the weekend, totaling $40, bring our year-end fundraiser total (as of 6am Eastern US time this morning) to $1,931!

Today marks the 5,150th edition of Rational Review News Digest*, and I had hoped for us to hit our goal of $5,150 by this morning to match up the numbers.

We're FAR closer to that goal than it looks: We only have to raise $2,575 from our other readers, after which supporter GL has pledged "matching funds" in the amount of the other half.

That means we're only $644 away from wrapping up our annual fundraiser and mostly shutting up about money until next October.

So, next goal:

In the US, this Thursday marks the Thanksgiving holiday. We're thankful for all of you. If you're thankful for the freedom movement's daily newspaper, help us raise that $644 by Thursday at:

https://news.rationalreview.com/support-rrnd

Have a great day!

Yours in liberty,

1)  Ukraine war: UN calls for end to "madness" of attacks near Zaporizhzhia plan
Source: Al Jazeera [Qatar state media]

"The United Nations atomic watchdog chief has condemned what he described as targeted attacks on the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant in Ukraine, calling for a 'stop to this madness.' Powerful explosions from shelling shook Ukraine's Zaporizhia region, the site of Europe's largest nuclear power plant, over the weekend. A heavy barrage of Russian military attacks -- almost 400 on Sunday alone -- also hit Ukraine's eastern regions, and fierce ground battles were underway in [the seceded Donetsk People's Republic], Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in his evening update on Sunday." 2)  Iran: Regime thugs abduct actors for removing headscarves in wider crackdown on celebrities
Source: The Guardian [UK]

"Iran has arrested two prominent actors who expressed solidarity with the country's protest movement and removed their headscarves in public, according to state media. Hengameh Ghaziani and Katayoun Riahi were both detained after being summoned by prosecutors looking into their 'provocative' social media posts, Iran's state-run IRNA news agency said. Iran's clerical leadership has been shaken by more than two months of demonstrations sparked by the [police murder] of Mahsa Amini .... Ghaziani published a video on Instagram of her removing the hijab. 'Maybe this will be my last post,' she wrote. 'From this moment on, whatever happens to me, know that as always, I am with the Iranian people until my last breath.' ... In a post last week, she accused the 'child-killer' Iranian government of 'murdering' more than 50 children." (11/21/22)

3)  Coinbase, MicroStrategy Bonds Tank as FTX Collapse Dents Institutional Confidence in Crypto
Source: CoinDesk

"Bonds issued by cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase (COIN), and MicroStrategy (MSTR), a business-intelligence company and investor in bitcoin, have slumped as investor confidence in the industry slid in the wake of FTX's collapse. Coinbase's bond due 2031 has dropped 15% this month to 50 U.S. cents on the dollar, according to data source Finra-Morningstar, sending the yield -- which moves in the opposite direction to price -- to a record high 13.5%. ... Bonds tied to MicroStrategy, a business-intelligence company and a bitcoin holder, have taken a similar beating. ... Last week, Goldman Sachs maintained a sell rating on Coinbase shares and slashed its 12-month price target to $41 from $49, saying the once FTX-induced volatility subsides, the lower level of crypto prices and the potential for reduced investor confidence will weigh on trading volumes. Shares in Coinbase have dropped 31% this month, ending Friday at $45.26." (11/21/22)

4)  Alito denies allegation of a SCOTUS leak in a 2014 case about access to birth control
Source: Politico

"Justice Samuel Alito denied allegations Saturday from a former anti-abortion activist that his wife, Martha-Ann Alito, played a role in revealing the outcome of a pending Supreme Court case in 2014. An Ohio woman friendly with the Alitos who was a donor to a Supreme Court-connected nonprofit group and allegedly served as a conduit for the sensitive information has also denied the claim. The allegation comes six months after a stunning breach of Supreme Court secrecy -- POLITICO's publication of the draft ruling authored by Alito that overturned the landmark, 49-year-old precedent guaranteeing a federal constitutional right to abortion. ... On Saturday, the New York Times published claims from Rev. Rob Schenck around another controversial case -- the high court's 2014 decision about the rights of religious company owners to deny coverage for some contraceptives under Obamacare -- Hobby Lobby v. Sebelius." (11/20/22)

5)  Kazakhstan: Tokayev wins re-election
Source: NBC News

"Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev secured a second term in Sunday's snap election, winning 81.31% of the vote, the central Asian nation's Central Election Commission said on Monday, citing preliminary data. He had been widely expected to extend his rule over the oil-rich nation by seven more years, with a strong mandate to continue his increasingly independent foreign policy, as the former Soviet republic navigates the Russia-Ukraine crisis. ... Voter turnout was 69.44%, with five other candidates scoring in the low single digits, data showed. Voters' second most popular choice was 'against everyone,' with 5.8% of ballots. ... Tokayev won his first election in 2019 with the backing of predecessor Nursultan Nazarbayev, but the two fell out this year amid violent unrest in the nation of 20 million, and Sunday's vote consolidated his power as an independent leader." 6)  NASA official: Astronauts to live and work on the moon by 2030
Source: The Guardian [UK]

"Astronauts are on course to be living and working on the moon before the end of the decade, according to a Nasa official. Howard Hu, the head of the US agency's Orion lunar spacecraft programme, said humans could be active on the moon for 'durations' before 2030, with habitats to live in and rovers to support their work. ... The Artemis 3 mission, which may not launch until 2026, is expected to return humans to the surface of the moon for the first time since Apollo 17 in December 1972. ... The Artemis programme, named after the twin sister of Apollo, also plans construction of the Lunar Gateway, a space station where astronauts will live and work as they orbit the moon." (11/20/22)

7)  Holmes receives 11-year sentence in Theranos scandal
Source: Independent [UK]

"Theranos founder Elizabeth Homes has been sentenced to more than 11 years in prison for defrauding investors of the blood-testing startup. Holmes, who plans on appealing, will not have to report for her 135-month prison sentence until April 2023, the judge announced during the hearing. 'I am devastated by my failings,' a heavily-pregnant Holmes said in a tearful courtroom apology. 'I have felt deep pain for what people went through, because I failed them.' Prosecutors had asked Judge Edward Davila to sentence Holmes to 15 years in prison and that she pay $800m in restitution for her role in the company's fraudulent claims. ... Judge Davila said he would schedule a restitution hearing to determine how much Holmes must repay at a later date." (11/20/22)

The suspect in the shooting at Club Q was identified as Anderson Lee Aldrich, according to Colorado Springs Police Chief Adrian Vasquez. Internal Affairs Minister Minoru Terada has been under fire over several accounting and funding irregularities. The soldier was attacked amid clashes between Israelis and Palestinians on Saturday, as thousands of Jewish Israelis spent the weekend in the city for an annual pilgrimage. She told investigators the assailant knocked her to the ground as she was helping someone who was hurt, and then beat her with a stick, before fleeing. 12) Oil Falls Below $80 With Bulls Fleeing as Physical Demand Slows
Source: Financial Post [Canada]

"Oil futures fell below $80 a barrel, extending a sharp weekly decline, as the global crude market softens amid signs of an oversupplied market. Pullbacks were evident along most of the oil-trading complex. On Friday, the US prompt-spread flipped into contango, a structure that signals oversupply, for the first time since last year. Meanwhile, a deteriorating market for physical barrels has also weighed on prices as demand for winter-delivery cargoes has weakened." (11/18/22)

Warplanes attacked bases of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, and the Syrian People's Protection Units, or YPG, the ministry said in a statement, which was accompanied by images of F-16 jets taking off and footage of a strike from an aerial drone. "House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy said when he becomes Speaker of the House again he'll boot 'Squad' member Rep. Ilhan Omar from her position on the House Foreign Affairs Committee over 'anti-Semitic' remarks. 'We watch anti-Semitism grow, not just on our campuses, but we watched it grow In the halls of Congress,' McCarthy said at the Republican Jewish Coalition's 2022 leadership meeting in Las Vegas on Saturday, Fox News reported. 'I promised you last year that as speaker she will no longer be on Foreign Affairs, and I'm keeping that promise,' he added, to cheers from the crowd, video posted to his Twitter shows. 17) Brazilian economist will lead regional development bank
Source: SFGate

"Latin American governments on Sunday selected Brazilian economist Ilan Goldfajn to lead the region's largest development bank in the wake of a misconduct probe that led to the firing of the previous president. Governors from the Inter-American Development Bank's 48 members selected Goldfajn to lead the Washington-based multilateral lender from a slate of five candidates nominated by Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico and Trinidad & Tobago. It follows the firing in September of Mauricio Claver-Carone, who had been the first American to lead the bank in its 63-year history. He was removed after an ethics probe found he likely carried on an intimate relationship with a subordinate. He denied the allegation. The Inter-American Development Bank is the biggest multilateral lender to Latin America, disbursing last year a record $23 billion to alleviate poverty made worse by the coronavirus pandemic in the region. The U.S. is the largest shareholder, with 30% of voting rights." (11/20/22)

18) Malaysia: Regime faces new crisis as poll delivers hung Parliament
Source: ABC News

"Malaysia tumbled into fresh political turmoil Sunday after a tightly contested general election delivered a hung Parliament with no clear winner and a surprising surge of support for an Islamist party. Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim's reformist alliance secured the biggest gain with 82 out of 220 Parliamentary seats, but fell far short of a majority. Trailing close behind was former Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin's Malay-based Perikatan Nasional, or National Alliance with 73 seats. The alliance led by the United Malays National Organization, which ruled Malaysia since independence from Britain until 2018, fared worse than in the last polls with upsets in a number of seats in a clear sign of rejection from Malays, who opted for Muhyiddin's bloc. It won only 30 seats. Among other key election losers was two-time former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, who at 97 is leading a separate Malay movement." (11/19/22)

Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., expressed optimism that Democrats can be united following the retirement of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, arguing the party's diversity would remain one of its strengths under his potential leadership. 'The thing about us ... is that while we can have some noisy conversations at times about how we can make progress for the American people, what we've seen is that under the leadership of Speaker Pelosi, Steny Hoyer, Jim Clyburn, we've constantly been able to come together,' Jeffries said Sunday during an appearance on CNN's 'State of the Union.' 21) "Respect for Marriage?" Not Really.
Source: Garrison Center
by Thomas L Knapp

"On November 16, the Respect for Marriage Act achieved 62 votes for 'cloture' in the US Senate, meaning that it will proceed to floor debate and likely -- after reconciliation with the House version, which passed in July -- become law. That's a good thing, but let's not make it more than it is. The long title of the bill reveals its true purpose: 'A bill to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act and ensure respect for State regulation of marriage, and for other purposes.' ... Actual respect for marriage would involve getting both federal and state governments completely out of the business of deciding who can be, or is, married. Not just 'on the basis of the sex, race, ethnicity, or national origin of those individuals,' but completely." (11/19/22)

22) From a Shadow Constitution to a Network State
Source: American Institute for Economic Research
by Max Borders

"To those who have been in the startup societies' space for decades, the dynamics of exit and voice are nothing new. Bob Haywood, for example, has done more to make special jurisdictions a reality than any living person, having a hand in creating Shenzen, Dubai, and many more. But Haywood is quietly effective, so he may never get the Nobel Peace Prize he deserves. Balaji Srinivasan has become startup societies' most outspoken champion, a rogue intellectual spreading the gospel of competitive governance. Srinivasan's main contribution to the space is his insistence that new jurisdictions should start by networking people in the cloud around a moral mission (Satoshi smiles)." (11/19/22)

23) America's Political Crisis Goes Beyond Trump
Source: The Nation
by Andrew J Bacevich

"On all matters related to Trump, our fellow citizens -- those who are sentient anyway -- tend to fall into two camps. In one are those who see the former president as a transformational figure, whether for good (Make America Great Again) or ill (paving the way for fascism). In the other are those who view him less as cause than effect, his lingering prominence stemming from pathologies he's skillfully exploited but had little role in creating. I happen to inhabit that second camp. I loathe Donald Trump. But I fear a political, intellectual, and cultural elite that appears incapable of responding effectively to the crisis presently engulfing the United States. Innumerable writers (including me) have attempted to lay out the origins and scope of that crisis and propose antidotes. None in my estimation (myself again included) have fully succeeded." 24) Technocracy and Totalitarianism
Source: Brownstone Institute
by Aaron Kheriaty

"The totalitarianisms of the 20th century were grounded in pseudoscientific ideologies, e.g., the Marxist pseudoscience of economics and history, or the Nazi pseudoscience of race and eugenics. In our own day, the pseudo-scientific ideology that drives societies in a totalitarian direction is scientism, which must be clearly distinguished from science. The ideology of scientism and the practice of science should not be confused: the former is often conflated with the latter, which creates no end of muddled thinking. Science is a method, or more accurately, a collection of various methods, aimed at systematically investigating observable phenomena in the natural world. ... Scientism is the philosophical claim -- which cannot be proven scientifically -- that science is the only valid form of knowledge." (11/19/22)

25) Are Libertarians House Cats?
Source: Foundation for Economic Education
by Patrick Carroll

"A year ago today, pastor and progressive commentator John Pavlovitz asked his Twitter audience, 'In your own words, how would you describe Libertarians?' One of his followers, John Spaulding, gave an answer that quickly spread to the farthest corners of the internet. 'House cats,' he replied. 'They are convinced of their fierce independence while utterly dependent on a system they don't appreciate or understand.' The metaphor seems to have struck a chord, judging by how much this comment has been shared on social media. But is it a fair comparison? Are libertarians rightly regarded as house cats? Let's take a look." (11/18/22)

26) The Crypto Exchange That "Accidentally" Lost $8 billion
Source: Financial Times
by Joshua Oliver & Nikou Asgari

"It was all an $8bn accident. Or so says Sam Bankman-Fried. As FTX, the crypto business led by the 30-year-old, quickly collapsed at the end of last week, many of its employees fled the Bahamas, the Caribbean country where the company was based. Some simply abandoned their cars at the airport. Within the space of a few days, FTX had gone from being the vanguard of a new crypto economy, with a valuation of $32bn and celebrated by celebrities and politicians, to a humiliating bankruptcy. ... the focus of the investigations and legal battles is now on the gaps in the crypto exchange's balance sheet -- and especially $8bn of missing customer deposits. The most innocent version of events that Bankman-Fried can present is that the missing customer funds were simply an oversight." (11/19/22)

27) The Economics of Electric Vehicles
Source: Dispatches from Heck
by Frank Clarke

"EVs are expensive because many of their parts are expensive, particularly batteries. To make EVs appear affordable, governments subsidize their purchase, the subsidy being paid by everyone in the tax base. Charging stations are likewise subsidized both as to their construction and installation as well as the actual rate per kilowatt-hour. ... if renewable energy can't handle even today's demand, where is all this electricity we're currently using coming from? In large part, it's coming from coal and other similarly dirty fuels. It may be that EVs are actually more polluting than FVs." (11/19/22)

28) The uncoal: Decarbonizing as wise investment
Source: Christian Science Monitor
by staff

"The task of curbing climate change has taken significant shifts over the decades, from denial of the science to acceptance of the human causes; to pledges by countries to reduce carbon emissions; to an embrace of innovative, efficient solutions. The latest United Nations climate summit, held in Egypt, may mark another turning point -- one from blame and victimization to cooperation and a shared responsibility. The global gathering opened last week under a pall of injustice. Poorer countries again sought money from wealthier countries to compensate for the disproportionate loss and damages from global warming. The issue remained unresolved. Yet a new model, known as 'just energy transition plans,' has now taken hold. Last week, South Africa signed an $8.5 billion agreement with the European Union and individual Western governments to start weaning the country off the use of coal." (11/17/22)

29) Term limits for bureaucrats?
Source: The Price of Liberty
by Nathan Barton

"When we speak of term limits, we always think of politicians who are elected to office: governors, representatives, State constitutional officers, and of course, Massa of these un-tied States. ... When it comes to bureaucrats? Indefinite periods of appointment or employment. Political appointees (heads of State or federal agencies, for example) are thought of as serving at will (of the politicians appointing them) and therefore limited to the length of the political regime or even official's term. But for the sake of ending the corruption of the spoils system which developed from the War of Independence for a century, the 'civil service' system was created. (Much like Frankenstein created his monster.) States and local governments followed that lead. Today, the wrongly-named civil servants above all have security of employment." (11/19/22)

30) Why Trump and Biden should BOTH not run in 2024
Source: New York Post
by Mark Penn & Andrew Stein

"Joe Biden and Donald Trump: Please do the country a service and don't run for president in 2024. America is in gridlock over the both of you, and it's time to let the country progress and find a unifying force that can lead it into the next decade. According to a Nov. 10-14 Morning Consult poll, 65% of Americans don't want Biden to run again, and 65% say the same of Trump. Both of you have served this country, yet both of you have flaws and problems that stand in the way of a successful second term. Mr. Trump, you did some great things as president. ... But your failure to act the moment you heard there was violence at the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, was a breach of your oath and presidential responsibility." (11/18/22)

31) NATO expansion and the origins of Russia's invasion of Ukraine
Source: Responsible Statecraft
by Branko Marcetic

"Eight months into the war in Ukraine, a consensus seems to have solidified among the U.S. commentariat: NATO expansion and years of U.S. policy had little or no role to play in Vladimir Putin's decision to invade Ukraine, which was instead entirely based on imperial pathologies of Putin's Russia. ... To be sure, Putin and other Russian elites clearly do have a skeptical view of Ukraine's independence and its people's separateness from Russia. And in any war, you'll find a tapestry of different factors that have led to its outbreak. But looking at the evidence, it's hard to deny NATO and its increasing encroachment into what the Kremlin sees as its sphere of influence was central to the road to war." (11/18/22)

32) Who Will Carry the Classical Liberals?
Source: EconLog
by Veronique de Rugy

"Republicans today stand for nothing, and on the rare occasions that they do stand for something, that something is woeful. From protectionism to vile anti-immigration rhetoric, from government-engineered paid leave to the extended child tax credit, and from threatening to punish big tech and to impose industrial policy, with a contingent shouting 'free-markets are actually bad,' the party is in disarray intellectually -- a fact that plausibly contributes to its current disarray politically. Some serious intellectuals on the right recognize this problem. ... unless Republicans wake up and realize that this crusade against 'market fundamentalism' isn't working for them -- if only because it's a sloppy, lazy and economically ignorant agenda -- they will continue to be ridiculed and lose elections long after Trump has gone bye-bye." 33) Euthanizing The Poor Is Just Capitalism's True Face

"We're at the most dangerous point in humanity's abusive relationship with US unipolar domination, for the same reason the most dangerous point in a battered wife's life is right when she's trying to escape. The empire is willing to do terrible and risky things to retain control. 'If I can't have you no one can' is a line that can be said to a wife or to the world. ... Nobody likes feeling like they're part of the problem. The reality that the US is the most tyrannical, murderous and belligerent government on earth causes people discomfort for the same reason they don't like thinking about factory farming or their own socioeconomic privilege. ... 34) Adam Schiff's vote for the Iraq war should disqualify him from the U.S. Senate
Source: Orange County Register
by Sal Rodriguez

"Pasadena-area Congressman Adam Schiff is reportedly planning a run for the United States Senate, according to Politico. Californians ought to have at least filter on any potential Senate candidates: if a politician voted for the war in Iraq, they shouldn't be rewarded with higher office. Schiff, who voted to authorize George W. Bush's war in Iraq, fails that standard. ... Schiff's defenders will say that was a long time ago. An indiscretion. We all make mistakes, like voting to kill hundreds of thousands of people and waste trillions of dollars over lies, I suppose. Well, I don't care if it was five years ago or 20 years ago. A vote for the Iraq war is a disqualifying stain on the record of every lawmaker who didn't have the wisdom of California Reps. Nancy Pelosi, Barbara Lee, Maxine Waters and Hilda Solis to oppose the war." (11/18/22)

36) Being Aware is First Step to Resisting US Militarization
Source: CounterPunch
by WT Whitney

"The military draft in the United States has disappeared. There's no major U.S. war and military affairs rate little attention in the media. The U.S. public embraces the pervasive influence of the military-industrial complex across U.S. society. The U.S. Congress seems never to hold back on wildly exorbitant military spending. Travelers entering North Carolina on Interstate 95 almost immediately see a sign proclaiming 'Nation's most military friendly state' -- a sign paid for, in part, by the N.C. Bankers Association. In high schools, military recruiters 'insinuate themselves into school life at every level.' Loudspeakers at sports events sound out tributes to veterans and active-duty troops. The latter may receive free tickets to performances, preferential parking, and discounts on merchandise." (11/18/22)

38) How To Talk Politics at Thanksgiving Without Causing a Family Feud: The key is humility and a genuine willingness to learn
Source: ProSocial Libertarians
by Andrew Jason Cohen

"Many people resort to telling their children, siblings, and spouses not to discuss certain topics at the family gathering for fear of setting off those relatives -- or just giving them an excuse to rant about whatever their cockamamie view is that day. Total avoidance is the only way they can see to keep the peace and prevent the polarization that exists across the country from leading to acrimony at their own feast. The suggestion that we should not discuss the controversial topic du jour is now often defended with claims about how it is uncivil or disrespectful to disagree with anyone or to bring up controversial issues that are sure to encourage disagreement. Despite the popularity of this view, it is a mistake." (11/18/22)

39) Will It Be Different This Time?
Source: Quillette
by Brian Stewart

"Although the Islamic Republic of Iran has always brimmed with enmity for foreign foes, popular discontent at home has always posed the more obvious and lethal threat to its existence. By its very nature, theocratic rule tends to unsettle societies in ways that breed political opposition of great breadth and depth, and the clerical tyranny in Tehran is no exception. Since it seized power in 1979, and particularly since the disastrous 1980–88 Iran-Iraq war, the revolutionary theocracy has had to contend with tenacious opposition from below. ... Barely four decades into its existence, the Islamic republic is confronted by another eruption of public rage, this time brought about by the nation's women, that may yet end in revolutionary change." 40) What's Right and What's Wrong About the Expression "Britaly"
Source: Cobden Centre
by Serio Beraldo

"According to The Economist, these turbulent times have completed the transformation of Britain into a new country, characterized by political instability and low growth, and subordinated to financial markets. Britaly is the name chosen to identify the new creature. By a twist of fate, it seems that the transformation accelerated during the short period in which Liz Truss was at 10, Downing Street. Some ten years ago, Ms Truss and her (first) chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng wrote a pamphlet titled «Britannia Unchained», where they pointed out at Italy -- a country tortured by «clogged public services, low growth and low productivity» -- as the example to avoid. Ironically, low productivity and low growth have now become a frequent feature of the British economy, as well as political instability. As a result, financial markets are skittish. The comparison with Italy has become unavoidable." (11/18/22)

41) The Fed's Thanksgiving Turkey
Source: The American Prospect
by Robert Kuttner

"The American Farm Bureau Federation is out with a report supposedly showing how much more U.S. families will pay for their Thanksgiving dinner this year. The headline number is scary (20 percent more than last year), enough to make the Federal Reserve keep tightening the money screws. Turkeys are the biggest source of the increase, with posted retail prices up 24 percent. But if you take a closer look, it's a very different story. By the middle of next week, when most people actually buy turkeys, the Farm Bureau admits, supply and demand will cause prices to drop dramatically. Posted turkey prices have already dropped by 14 percent since the Farm Bureau's survey, according to the USDA. The Ag Department says final retail prices of turkeys will be only about 1 percent higher than at last Thanksgiving." (11/18/22)

In prison, the state takes care of prisoners and, by and large, keeps them safe. ... this is no different from what the American people have done with their adoption of a welfare-warfare state way of life. 44) New Depths of Russian Insanity as Putin's Ukraine Debacle Continues
Source: Cato Institute
by Cathy Young

"While Ukrainians celebrated the liberation of Kherson, anti‐war Russians were distracted by a much darker story: the posting of an apparent snuff video in which a former fighter with the Wagner mercenary group, a would‐be defector to the Ukrainian side, was bludgeoned to death with a sledgehammer. ... The story is indeed horrific; the official and quasi‐official reactions make it worse. And, capping two weeks during which Russia's former president and current deputy chair of the security council asserted that the country is literally at war with Satan while the leading show on national television claimed that Russia's biggest problem was not enough dictatorship, it starkly illustrates Russia's descent into a twilight zone that's part horror movie and part theater of the absurd." 45) Can Congress go 44 days without piling on more debt?
Source: Fox News
by Maya MacGuineas

"The national debt is on track to exceed record levels in the next few years. Inflation is at a 40-year high. We need to put in place a balanced, bipartisan debt-reduction plan to slow inflation, bring down the debt, and promote long-term economic growth -- around $7 trillion in savings would be enough to keep the debt from growing out of control. But given that the two parties are at each other's throats and can barely agree on anything, let alone anything as hard as finding trillions of dollars in spending cuts and tax increases, that seems unlikely to happen anytime soon. So how about we start with baby steps: what if members of Congress and the president agreed to no new borrowing for the rest of 2022. It's just a mere 45 days." (11/18/22)

The contagion that followed drove a handful of other major firms, including Celsius, Voyager, and Three Arrows Capital out of business. But assumptions that the worst had come to pass, and that the wheat had separated from the chaff, were premature. The bankruptcy filing of FTX has even more fundamentally damaged perceptions of the asset class, and sent valuations tumbling to lows not seen in several years. "Even the most dispiriting election results in the last few years have had important bright spots for the Left, and this year's deeply unusual midterm election result is no different. In a cycle that transformed overnight from predictions of a Democratic bloodbath to widespread Republican despair, the Left has achieved some major victories that shouldn't be overlooked. The major top-line success for the Left this election is the addition of several new insurgent candidates who, like 'the Squad' of 2018, were backed by progressive outside groups -- notably the Working Families Party (WFP) and Justice Democrats -- with little or no support from established party networks. The total of such members now rises to twelve, after four such insurgent candidates sailed to victory in safe blue seats for which they won primaries earlier this year." (11/18/22)

50) Signs of Diplomacy in Ukraine? Finding a Faint Pulse.
Source: Antiwar.com
by Ted Snider

"As the intense combat and missile strikes show, peace is still a distant hope in Ukraine. But, for the first time in a long time, a faint diplomatic pulse has been found. In early November, National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and privately pushed him to 'signal an openness to negotiate with Russia and drop their public refusal to engage in peace talks unless President Vladimir Putin is removed from power.' Publicly, Washington insists that its message was not an attempt to push Ukraine to the negotiating table, but rather an attempt to manage international perceptions. The plan was to strengthen Ukraine's leverage by 'reinforc[ing] to the world that it's Ukraine, not Russia, that wants to resolve the conflict.' But subsequent reporting has suggested that privately the push was more than perception management." (11/18/22)
