1) Palestine: Red Cross federation “outraged” over Israeli murder of medics
Source: The Guardian [UK]
“The Red Cross federation voiced outrage on Sunday after eight medical colleagues were killed while on duty in the Gaza Strip. … The IFRC said the bodies were retrieved after ‘seven days of silence’ and of having access denied to the area of Rafah where they were last seen. It said it was the single most deadly attack on its colleagues anywhere in the world since 2017. Israel’s military admitted on Saturday it had fired on ambulances in the Gaza Strip after identifying them as ‘suspicious vehicles,’ with Hamas condemning it as a war crime. … The Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) said earlier on Sunday it had recovered the bodies of the medics, killed a week ago, and that they were found along with those of six members of Gaza’s civil defence agency and one UN agency employee. One Red Crescent ambulance officer remains missing.” (03/31/25)

2) “Pissed off” at Putin, Trump threatens tariffs on Russian oil if Moscow blocks Ukraine deal
Source: Reuters
“U.S. President Donald Trump said on Sunday he was ‘pissed off’ at Russian President Vladimir Putin and will impose secondary tariffs of 25% to 50% on buyers of Russian oil if he feels Moscow is blocking his efforts to end the war in Ukraine. Trump told NBC News he was very angry after Putin last week criticized the credibility of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s leadership, the television network reported, citing a telephone interview early on Sunday. … ‘If Russia and I are unable to make a deal on stopping the bloodshed in Ukraine, and if I think it was Russia’s fault … I am going to put secondary tariffs on oil, on all oil coming out of Russia,’ Trump said. ‘That would be, that if you buy oil from Russia, you can’t do business in the United States,’ Trump said. ‘There will be a 25% tariff on all oil, a 25- to 50-point tariff on all oil.'” (03/31/25)

3) CA: Legislature takes up “Bitcoin Rights” bill
Source: Bitcoin.com
“California’s Assembly has initiated legislative action on cryptocurrency governance with the filing of AB-1052, referred to as the ‘Bitcoin Rights’ bill. Introduced by Assemblymember Juan Carrillo Valencia, who presides over the Banking and Finance Committee, the measure targets legal recognition for digital asset self-custody. Public confirmation of the bill’s introduction came on March 29 through a statement posted by the nonprofit Satoshi Action Fund on the social media platform X. … The bill, AB-1052, outlines several provisions intended to strengthen protections for digital asset users. It explicitly affirms the right to self-custody bitcoin and other digital assets, while barring public agencies from imposing taxes or restrictions solely based on asset use in payments. A separate section of the bill establishes a legal process for handling unclaimed digital property, ensuring such assets are secured by licensed custodians instead of being left in administrative uncertainty.” (03/30/25)

4) Federal Judge Blocks Trump From Dismantling Consumer Financial Protection Racket
Source: US News & World Report
“A federal judge agreed Friday to block the Trump administration from dismantling the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, an agency that was targeted for mass firings before the court’s intervention. U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson agreed to issue a preliminary injunction that maintains the agency’s existence until she rules on the merits of a lawsuit seeking to preserve the agency. The judge said the court ‘can and must act’ to save the agency from being shuttered. Jackson ruled that, without a court order, President Donald Trump’s administration would move quickly to shut down the agency that Congress created in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis.” (03/28/25)

5) Turkey: Protesters return to Istanbul’s streets for huge rally
Source: BBC News [UK State Media]
“Hundreds of thousands of pro-democracy demonstrators have returned to the streets of Istanbul, Turkey, to show support for the city’s jailed mayor. Ekrem Imamoglu, who is seen as the main rival of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, was arrested on corruption charges last week, sparking mass protests. He denies the charges and says his arrest was politically motivated. Saturday’s crowds were so large they spilled from the site of the protest into a neighbouring park. The chairman of Imamoglu’s Republican People’s Party (CHP) addressed demonstrators, reading out a letter from the jailed politician who is being held in solitary confinement.” (03/30/25)

6) OR: Judge blocks city from enforcing homeless camping ban
Source: The Guardian [UK]
“An Oregon judge issued a preliminary injunction on Friday blocking the city at the heart of a US supreme court ruling on homeless encampments from enforcing its camping rules unless it meets certain conditions, as part of a lawsuit filed by advocates. Under the decision by Josephine county circuit court judge Sarah McGlaughlin, Grants Pass must increase capacity at city-approved sites for camping and ensure they are physically accessible to people with disabilities. Unless those conditions are met, the order bars the city from citing, arresting or fining people for camping on public property; forcing people to leave campsites; removing campsites that are not clearly abandoned; or prohibiting camping in most city parks. The order still lets the city enforce rules banning sleeping on sidewalks and streets or in alleys and doorways.” (03/29/25)

7) Appeals court clears way for Trump to fire leaders of “independent” federal agencies
Source: Politico
“A federal appeals court has cleared the way for President Donald Trump to fire members of executive branch boards that oversee federal employee grievances and labor disputes across the nation. The ruling Friday is a victory for Trump’s effort to exert control over regulatory agencies that Congress intended to operate with some degree of independence from the president. Federal laws limit the president’s ability to remove the board members who oversee those agencies, but the Trump administration has argued those limits are unconstitutional.” (03/28/25)

“Myanmar’s neighbours sent warships and aircraft laden with relief materials and rescue personnel on Sunday, as international aid gained steam after a massive earthquake ravaged much of the poor Southeast Asian nation. At least 1,600 people have been killed and 3,400 injured by Friday’s 7.7-magnitude quake, one of Myanmar’s strongest in a century, its military government said.” (03/30/25)

9) Afghanistan: Regime releases detained US citizen Faye Hall
Source: BBC News [UK State Media]
“An American citizen, who was held by the Taliban in Afghanistan for two months, has been released, Washington’s former envoy to Kabul has said. Faye Hall will ‘soon be heading home’ after she was arrested by the Taliban in February, Zalmay Khalilzad, who served as the US special representative for Afghanistan from 2018-2021, wrote on X. Ms Hall, who is now in the care of Qatari officials, was detained alongside a British couple in their seventies — Barbie and Peter Reynolds — and their interpreter. The couple ran training programmes for women and girls, and stayed when the Taliban retook control of Afghanistan in 2021. Afghan officials have not made the reason for their arrest public. In his announcement, Mr Khalilzad thanked Qatar, which acts as a mediator between the US and Afghanistan. The US State Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.” (03/30/25)

“A former Australian police officer avoided a prison term when was sentenced Friday for killing a 95-year-old nursing home resident with a stun gun, in an outcome that disappointed the woman’s family. Kristian White was sentenced to 450 hours of community service and placed under the supervision of a corrections officer for two years for manslaughter. … Staff called police to a nursing home in Cooma on May 17, 2023, because Nowland was wandering through the building with a walker and holding a steak knife. White fired his Taser at her within minutes of confronting her. She fell back and hit her head on the floor. She died in a hospital a week later from an inoperable brain bleed. The judge said: ‘A frail and confused 95-year-old woman in fact posed nothing that could reasonably be described as a threat of any substance.'” (03/28/25)

Source: SFGate
“The historic SF-88 Nike Missile Site, a part of Golden Gate National Recreation Area in the Marin Headlands, was vandalized sometime between March 15 and March 19, according to the National Park Service. Officials in a news release Tuesday said the site was forcibly entered and extensively damaged. Hate speech was spray-painted throughout the magazine, and hazardous chemicals were dumped inside. The vandal or vandals ‘may have sustained chemical burns and may have needed medical attention,’ the park service statement said. The SF-88 site, built during the Cold War, is ‘the most fully restored Nike missile facility in the country,’ the statement said, and a key part of Golden Gate National Recreation Area’s historical preservation efforts. The missile facility was built to defend against any potential Soviet attacks and meant to serve as a last resort against Soviet planes carrying hydrogen bombs.” (03/28/25)

“A woman says police overreacted by trying to ban her from a park over allegations she was illegally foraging for mushrooms. Louise Gather said a police officer came to her home and attempted to issue her with a community resolution report after she visited Bradgate Park, in Leicestershire, in search of magpie inkcaps — a rare kind of fungi. It follows a complaint by the Bradgate Park Trust, which runs the park, that Mrs Gather picked mushrooms illegally because it is a designated site of special scientific interest (SSSI). The 38-year-old insisted she had not picked any mushrooms during her visit in November, and that Leicestershire Police’s actions had been ‘a bit excessive.’ Mrs Gather, from Derby, revealed details of the community resolution order on TikTok this week.” (03/30/25)

Source: CNBC
“Elon Musk said on Friday that his startup xAI has merged with X, his social network, in an all-stock transaction that values the artificial intelligence company at $80 billion and the social media company at $33 billion. ‘xAI and X’s futures are intertwined,’ Musk, the world’s richest person, wrote in a post on X. ‘Today, we officially take the step to combine the data, models, compute, distribution and talent.’ … Because both companies are privately held and controlled by Musk, the transaction likely amounts to a stock swap, with X investors getting paid out in xAI shares. “Outraged by Elon Musk’s devastating [sic] contributions to the Trump administration, tens of thousands worldwide held ‘Tesla Takedown’ protests at over 200 locations on Saturday. Protests began the day in front of Tesla showrooms in Australia and New Zealand. They then rippled across Europe, including Finland, Norway, Denmark, Germany, France, the Netherlands, and the UK. In the US, protests occurred in nearly every state, including the northeast, south, midwest, and west coast. ‘Elon Musk is destroying our democracy, and he’s using the fortune he built at Tesla to do it,’ organizers wrote on Action Network, which has an interactive map of the protest sites. ‘We are taking action at Tesla to stop Musk’s illegal coup.’ Organizers also have a message for people with ties to the company: ‘Sell your Teslas, dump your stock, join the picket lines.'” (03/30/25)

Source: South China Morning Post [Hong Kong]
“Utah has become the first US state to ban fluoride in public drinking water, over opposition from dentists and national health organisations who warn the move will lead to medical problems and disproportionately affect low-income communities. Republican Governor Spencer Cox signed legislation on Thursday that bars cities and communities from deciding whether to add the mineral to their water systems. … Utah lawmakers who pushed for a ban said putting fluoride in water was too expensive. Cox, who grew up and raised his own children in a community without fluoridated water, compared it recently to being ‘medicated’ by the government.” (03/28/25)

16) Pakistan: Regime says it killed ten civilians during an anti-militant operation in the northwest
Source: SFGate
“Pakistan said it killed 10 civilians during an anti-militant operation in the country’s northwest and promised to investigate the circumstances. Authorities made the admission Saturday evening about the deaths, which occurred in the early hours of that morning in a remote hilltop area of Katlang, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. It is rare for Pakistan to reveal civilian casualties resulting from anti-militant activities and it was not immediately clear how the Saturday operations were carried out. According to provincial government spokesman Muhammad Ali Saif, reports indicated the location was being used as a ‘hideout and transit point for terrorist’ elements. Subsequent information revealed that some unarmed civilians were present in the vicinity of the site, Saif added. Locals said 10 bodies, including those of women and children, were recovered from the area where government officials claimed the anti-militant operation had taken place.” (03/29/25)

17) Lebanon: Mass evacuations as Israel strikes Beirut suburb
Source: Washington Post
“Israel launched a strike on a suburb of southern Beirut on Friday, the first such attack on the Lebanese capital since Israel and Hezbollah agreed to a ceasefire late last year. Traffic quickly filled the streets of the Hadath neighborhood after Israel’s military issued an evacuation warning, saying it was targeting a building it identified as a Hezbollah facility. … Lebanon’s education ministry issued an emergency order calling on all schools in the area to close. The evacuation warning Friday afternoon followed reports of two projectiles launched from Lebanese territory. One of the projectiles launched toward Israel was intercepted, the other fell in Lebanese territory. Hezbollah, the Iranian-backed armed group and Lebanese political party, denied launching the rockets, according to a statement carried by Lebanon’s state news agency. The statement also said Hezbollah remains committed to the ceasefire agreement.” (03/28/25)

18) Somaliland: Regime rejects Somalia regime’s offer of key port to US
Source: BBC News [UK State Media]
“Somalia’s breakaway region of Somaliland has rejected an attempt by the central government to give the US exclusive control of a port and airbase in Berbera. The city lies on the strategic Gulf of Aden, on the northern coast of Somaliland. The territory, which declared independence in 1991 as Somalia descended into civil war, says the facilities are not Mogadishu’s to give away. In a letter to US President Donald Trump, seen by Reuters news agency, Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud also offered port and airbase within Somalia, saying all four would strengthen US security operations. Somaliland’s Foreign Affairs Minister Abdirahman Dahir Aden dismissed the move as ‘desperate’. Signals given before Trump began his second term have given Somalilanders hope that the US may become the world’s first country to recognise the self-declared republic, which has functioned as a de facto state for nearly 34 years.” (03/30/25)

The Mammoth Lakes Police Department released a video (warning: graphic content) on Thursday of the shooting showing Uribe, who was 39, running from police before he’s shot multiple times by two police officers. Will Horowitz, an attorney representing Uribe’s children, said in a press release that officers had no justification for the killing. ‘The video demonstrates that the police’s use of deadly force was completely unnecessary. “France’s constitutional court on Friday ruled local politicians can be barred from office immediately if convicted of a crime, leaving the door open for far-right leader Marine Le Pen to potentially be barred from the 2027 presidential race in an embezzlement trial concluding on Monday. National Rally (RN) leader Le Pen, who leads polls for the 2027 presidential vote, accuses prosecutors of seeking her ‘political death’ by asking judges to bar her from office for five years if convicted. “The US launched 65 airstrikes in 24 hours in Yemen, and then Trump’s intelligence chief Tulsi Gabbard tweeted, ‘President Trump IS the President of Peace. He is ending bloodshed across the world and will deliver lasting peace in the Middle East.’ These freaks have no connection with reality. … I saw a video the other day of a father cradling the decapitated head of his son from an airstrike in Gaza, and I’m told I’m a terrorist supporter if I criticize the people who decapitated him. … The word ‘terrorist’ is a meaningless tool of imperial narrative control. Source: The Garrison Center
by Thomas L Knapp
“Every time Trump issues, or federal agencies attempt to implement, an unconstitutional executive order — one or both of which happen on a near-daily basis — journalists and pundits want to know: First, will the courts order a halt to the executive branch’s latest roughshod running over of the US Constitution? Second, if the courts do so rule, will the administration comply with those rulings? I find that line of questioning rather odd, since history’s already answered it for us many times over the Constitution’s 230-odd years of supposed rule. The answer to both questions is ‘maybe, maybe not.'” (03/30/25)

Source: Foundation for Economic Education
by Will Ogilvie Vega de Seoane
“Alexis de Tocqueville didn’t journey across the United States to write a travelogue — he set out to craft a mirror. He wasn’t interested in landscapes or monuments. He wanted to understand democracy not as an abstract theory but as a living, breathing reality. He wanted to see its people — their passions, their dreams, the way they lived, worked, and shaped their own future. But more than all of that, he wanted them to see themselves. His concern wasn’t that democracy would collapse overnight in a violent coup. Nor did he fear the rise of radical ideologies, from the left or the right, as much as something far more insidious: the slow suffocation of freedom under layers of bureaucracy, endless rules, the tyranny of the majority, and growing public apathy. He saw it coming. And, in many ways, we’re living it today.” (03/28/25)

25) The Suicide of Expertise
Source: Law & Liberty
by G Patrick Lynch
“‘Compared to what?’ That should be the first response of any economist worth his or her salt if asked to opine on a specific public policy. For example, should we err on the side of disease prevention and lockdown an entire country despite devastating social and economic consequences? Or should we live with the risk of the disease? That is what economics is supposed to do well: compare alternatives based on tradeoffs. Experts in various policy realms often lack the perspective to consider the consequences of focusing exclusively on their narrow fields. Health experts focus on health, sometimes without consideration of other costs, particularly down the road. Of course, this assumes that the experts themselves have relevant, rigorously tested, and accurate prescriptions to handle public policy challenges.” (03/28/25)

“When we finally learn the full melodrama of the so-called Signal 1-2 day ‘scandal’ of inviting a leftwing, Trump-despising, Atlantic editor Jeffrey Goldberg onto a supposedly secure conference list, involving most of the top Trump security officials, lots of questions need asking and answering. Most importantly, who exactly had Goldberg’s private number, and ostensibly (in error [?]) could have possibly inserted it into the cleared list of participants in the discussions? Why Goldberg, rather than some random person of some 345 million Americans? So why in the world would any top Trump officials or their staffers ever even have Goldberg’s private contact information, given his quite public record of: a) fabricating stories with unnamed sources, and b) suffering from a decade of chronic Trump derangement syndrome? Did Goldberg know the mechanisms that had prompted and continued his stealthy presence on the secure discussions?” (03/29/25)

by John Avlon
“One of the tired old truisms of post-Watergate Washington is ‘It’s not the crime, it’s the coverup.’ In fact, usually it’s both — but this coverup reflects the cult-like insistence on unreality as a sign of tribal loyalty that flows down from President Donald Trump. Tone always comes from the top. Lies are the instinctive official defense from this administration. As Andrew Egger noted this week, ‘It’s all there in the three rules Trump learned from his mentor, Roy Cohn: always attack, always deny everything, always declare victory.’ At this point, those tactics have just become ‘a habit of mind’ — they’re second nature for Team Trump. So, when caught red-handed sharing classified information on a public messaging app, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth did what Trump would have done: lie loudly. “Soon before Claudia Sheinbaum became Mexico’s first female president last October, a clergyman pleaded with her to listen to the mothers of thousands of ‘disappeared’ Mexicans. Such a step, said Catholic Bishop Francisco Javier Acero Pérez, would help mend the country’s ‘broken social fabric’. His request came after Dr. Sheinbaum stated she did not share the church’s ‘pessimistic evaluation’ of violence by organized crime in the country. In March, the new administration finally did show a readiness to act – after news broke of an ‘extermination center’ run by a drug cartel at a ranch and reportedly used for mass killings. 30) What Would Daniel Ellsberg Have Done? Thoughts On The Waltz-Goldberg Yemen War Signal Leak
Source: CounterPunch
by Nicholas Levis
“Leading politicians of the Democratic opposition, and the U.S. corporate media covering the Signal text leak, have not condemned or showed concern about the sudden surprise acts of war that involve civilian murder and that are illegal under international law. Because military action in Yemen has not been declared or authorized by a vote of the Congress, the operations also represent an unconstitutional use of the military. Rather, the opponents and critics of Trump consider it a scandal and a kind of national emergency that the exchange was accidentally leaked to an unauthorized participant, in a clumsy and incompetent fashion.” (03/28/25)

31) Forget the 51st state, Mr. President, and consider a common market with Canada
Source: New York Post
by staff
“As President Donald Trump continues to toy (troll?) with the idea of Canada becoming the 51st state, he should consider a better option: Build a common market with our neighbors to the north. That’s a lot more in line with the statehood idea than hitting the country with a barrage of tariffs. A deal to let labor, goods and capital flow freely both ways would be a boon to both economies, similar to the early days of European economic integration, before European Union bureaucrats started regulating industries within an inch of their lives. And it would avoid the drawbacks of the statehood approach — two more senators for the Democrats and the yoke of absorbing a relatively sluggish economy.” (03/29/25)

32) Three Pillars of Power: Luther Martin’s Anti-Federalist Warnings
Source: Tenth Amendment Center
by Mike Maharrey
“Luther Martin warned that the Constitution would create a centralized national government with few real restraints – one that would steadily erode state sovereignty, override local control, and impose its will under the guise of law. In his essay Genuine Information, he outlined the many ways he believed the proposed system would accelerate the consolidation of power. Among these dangers, he singled out three provisions as particularly alarming: an all-powerful federal judiciary, the ability to suspend habeas corpus, and the continuation of slavery. Together, Martin saw these provisions as a dangerous trifecta – key pillars of a broader system of unchecked national power. He feared this system would reduce the states to mere administrative units, make justice unattainable, and embed moral contradiction into the very foundation of the new republic.” (03/29/25)

33) Social Contract Ambiguity
Source: Econlog
by Kevin Corcoran
“In order for a contract to be validly binding, it needs to be clear exactly what the contract contains. Yet even among social contract theorists, there is surprisingly little agreement here. They’ll all agree that a social contract exists, but wildly disagree about what that contract actually entails. People on the left and the right will both object that some law or institution ‘violates the social contract’ but disagree about which laws or institutions do so, and what the violated terms are. Note, this can’t be resolved by something as simple as pointing to the existing set of laws (or the Constitution, perhaps) and declaring that those laws are what represent the social contract.” (03/28/25)

34) The war over war with Iran has just begun
Source: Responsible Statecraft
by Sina Toossi
“In recent weeks, many of the same neoconservative voices who pushed the U.S. into Iraq are calling for strikes on Iran. Groups like the Foundation for Defense of Democracies and the Washington Institute for Near East Policy are once again promoting confrontation, claiming there may never be a better time to act. But this is a dangerous illusion that risks derailing what Donald Trump himself says he wants: a deal, not another disastrous war in the Middle East. A war with Iran wouldn’t just risk another endless conflict. It would blow up Trump’s broader agenda at home and abroad.” (03/28/25)

“As noted in yesterday’s post, Stephen Marche argues that America is sitting on a powder keg and that a second Civil War is a very real possibility. But he also suggests that there is an alternative way of resolving the polarization of American politics, a politics characterized not by mere factionalism, not by mere disagreement, but by a virulent hatred of the other side. That alternative is disunion. We’ll get to that shortly, but first a digression on America’s Second Most Dangerous Job.” (03/28/25)

“I used to work with a guy who would throw temper tantrums in meetings. This happened often, because he found even minor challenges to his opinions enraging — and found controlling his rage so it wouldn’t lead to a tantrum impossible. He’d shout, stamp his feet, storm out of the room, and slam the door behind him. The thing is, he also told himself — and definitely told the rest of us — that he was principled and moral. ‘Principle and morality’ were primary features of his self-identity. He’s who came to mind when a friend recently commented that, ‘Having moral ideals is not an excuse to be an asshole in your day to day life.'” (03/28/25)

And nothing deserves a ‘mood’ like dealing with the worst creatures on the planet since life crawled out of the primordial ooze: Democrats. How depraved must a group of people be to have Hillary Clinton step forward as the person to speak out on this so-called ‘Signal scandal?’ That’s like hiring OJ Simpson to be the spokesmodel for your battered women’s shelter or Bill Clinton to be your marriage counselor.” (03/30/25)

“The drama this week over the Trump administration Signal group chat about a strike on Houthis in Yemen in which The Atlantic Editor in Chief Jeffrey Goldberg was inadvertently included has been popcorn-worthy, if you’re into that sort of thing. But beyond the resultant posturing between screw-up bureaucrats and pompous politicians, we learned something of value from the incident: Government officials use the popular encrypted messaging app because the intelligence community considers it secure. While the political class argues over the details, the rest of us should consider that an endorsement of this technology.” (03/28/25)

39) The Madness of Tariffs — Aluminum Example
Source: Coyote Blog
by Warren Meyer
“Trump has proposed — and depending on the time of day — is actively planning to put large tariffs on aluminum imports (25% in the last version I saw). The implication is that there is some unfairness that has other countries producing a product we should be making domestically. Typically the argument is that the other governments are somehow subsidizing the product unfairly. Personally, I have never understood this argument — as a US consumer I am perfectly happy to have taxpayers of another country subsidize my purchases. It turns out aluminum is a great example to look at because it is very clear why it is produced where it is.” (03/28/25)

40) Constitution’s enemies misuse 1798 law to gut due process
Source: Orange County Register
by Steven Greenhut
“For years, we’ve endured constitutional conservatives’ bloviating about the importance of protecting the sacred principles enshrined in our Constitution. Those include the separation of powers — legislative, executive and judicial checks on one another — and due process. Many of these hypocrites are defending the administration’s policies and bashing a judge for halting the hasty airlift of accused criminal aliens to a prison run by a banana-republic strongman — a directive the president promptly ignored. Perhaps most of these deportees are criminals and a threat (unlike peaceful Japanese residents who posed no threat whatsoever). They still deserve due process — their day in court, so to speak — to prove they have indeed violated the law. Constitutional conservatives of all people should understand that the government gets things wrong and individuals deserve protection from arbitrary actions by its agents.” (03/28/25)

41) What Next for Biden Officials Who Enabled War Crimes?
Source: Common Dreams
by Edward Ahmed Mitchell & Ismail Allison
“If a worker consistently and completely fails at a job, he or she should not receive a promotion, a pay raise, or a pat on the back. Sooner or later, that worker should receive a termination notice. This is especially true of workers who engage in unethical behavior on the job. Almost any worker who violates office rules, defrauds their employer, or hurts their customers risks not only termination, but potential lawsuits and criminal charges. Yet a small sector of workers in our nation do not face such consequences for such mistakes or misconduct on the job. Some people, no matter how badly they fail at their job or how many disasters they create on their job, can keep their positions or even move on to even better jobs. Who are these special people who can ‘fail up’ again and again? Outgoing White House officials.” (03/29/25)

42) “Liberalism and Capitalism”
Source: Free Association
by Sheldon Richman
“Ludwig von Mises’s 1927 path-breaking work in political theory speaks to the current generations. In section 5 of his introduction to Liberalism: The Classical Tradition, Mises sounds impeccably relevant in describing how the opponents of liberalism and the market economy twist facts that are plainly before our eyes. You’ll see how he refuted the absurd claim that capitalism serves only a tiny privileged and exploitative group. The work of most thinkers passes away soon after they do. Not so with Ludwig von Mises. He began the section by acknowledging what should be obvious. Governments have always interfered with individual freedom, free enterprise, and free markets — in a word, capitalism — in substantial ways. Laissez faire has never been allowed. That does not prove it is impossible, only that people either did not understand the system or did not want its success demonstrated.” (03/28/25)

But in a crisis, courage can be found in unexpected places. This is why it’s heartening to see some on the right (beyond the usual never-Trumpers) beginning to speak out about Trump’s overreach. My answer to the first question is typically, ‘Why should we leave? This is my home! I’m raising my family here; I started a business here. Yes, our terrible government has turned everything into a disaster right now, but I love California. …’ Then combine that with how I’m now answering the second question, about why people still vote for the same old you-know-what: ‘Actually, they’re starting to vote differently.'” (03/28/25)

Anyone who expresses doubt, whether it’s Larry Summers or the Wall Street Journal editorial page, must be a corrupt globalist, or a woke radical left-wing Marxist, or maybe both. “There are many contrasts between the 35th president, John F. Kennedy, and the 45th and 47th president, Donald J. Trump. One extreme example is regarding U.S. policy toward Israel. Unknown to many people today, JFK supported Palestinian rights and sought a sustainable peace in the region. In 1960, when JFK was campaigning to be president, he spoke at the convention of the Zionists of America. In his speech, Kennedy was complimentary about Israel but frankly said, ‘I cannot believe that Israel has any real desire to remain indefinitely a garrison state surrounded by fear and hate.’ That warning, issued when Israel had only existed for 12 years, was ignored.” (03/28/25)

by John Feffer
“Israel has resumed its aerial bombardment of Gaza. The latest cease-fire, which lasted two months and led to the release of 33 Israeli hostages and 1,900 Palestinian prisoners and detainees, never made it out of its first stage. The Israeli government has now adopted a strategy of inflicting overwhelming violence until Hamas capitulates by releasing the remaining hostages. Ukraine and Russia have accepted a limited cease-fire. Both sides have agreed to stop attacking each other’s energy infrastructure, but neither has actually adhered to this condition. U.S. President Donald Trump, who coaxed both sides toward this cease-fire, is reportedly furious. This week, Moscow and Kyiv agreed to extend this partial cease-fire to the Black Sea, though here, too, they don’t seem in a rush to stop their attacks. No serious analysts, including those in Russia, expect this cease-fire to hold.” (03/29/25)

50) Deep-six the income tax
Source: The Price of Liberty
by Nathan Barton
“Yahoo posted a fascinating clickbait article with all kinds of numbers. What would upper-middle-income wages and salaries be like if the FedGov income tax disappeared? Depending on the various income levels in the States, working folks would take home anywhere from $1200 to $1800 every two weeks. That is an average of more than $30,000 per year per taxpayer. Government is expensive. The FedGov is more expensive. And what do we get for it? Well, libertarians and lovers of liberty have long advocated the abolition of this nasty method that the government uses to steal money from the people it supposedly works for. This gives us one more really neat talking point in getting people to at least consider that what we have done for more than a century is a really bad idea — not just expensive but stupid.” (03/28/25)
