1)  Turkey: Police arrest 46 over Istanbul bombing
Source: Al Jazeera [Qatar state media]

"Turkish police have arrested 46 people over the explosion in central Istanbul that left at least eight people dead and 81 others wounded, Istanbul police have said. Interior minister Suleyman Soylu told reporters on Monday that the suspects included the 'person who left the bomb that caused the explosion' on the busy Istiklal Avenue in Turkey's largest city. ... Soylu blamed the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) for Sunday's blast, in the popular shopping and tourism spot, saying: 'Our assessment is that the order for the deadly terror attack came from Ain al-Arab [Kobane] in northern Syria,' where he said the group has its Syrian headquarters. ... No group has claimed responsibility for the blast yet." (11/14/22)

2)  Indonesia: Biden, Xi meet
Source: CNBC

"U.S. President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping met Monday in person for the first time since Biden took office in Jan. 2021. 'We need to chart the right course for the China-U.S. relationship,' Xi said at the opening of the meeting in Mandarin, according an official English translation. 'We need to find the right direction for the bilateral relationship going forward and elevate the relationship.' The meeting took place in Bali, a day before the G-20 summit is due to kick off. The U.S. and China can manage their differences and stop competition from turning into conflict, Biden said, according to Reuters. ... Tensions between the U.S. and China have escalated over the last several years, touching flashpoints ranging from Taiwan and the war in Ukraine, to the ability of American companies to sell high-end tech to Chinese businesses." Source: CBS News

"Democrats will continue to control the Senate following the 2022 midterm elections, after Nevada Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto on Saturday was projected by CBS News to win a tight reelection race against Republican Adam Laxalt. Her victory gives Democrats 50 seats in the 118th Congress. Vice President Kamala Harris' tie-breaking vote, should it be needed, gives them the majority, regardless of the outcome of the Georgia runoff election in December between Sen. 4)  Ukraine war: Zelenskiy visits Kherson
Source: Reuters

"Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy visited Kherson and addressed troops there on Monday, days after Russian forces were forced to retreat from the southern city after months of occupation. 'We are moving forward,' he told troops standing in formation in front of the administration building in the city's main square. 'We are ready for peace, peace for all our country.' Zelenskiy thanked NATO and other allies for their support in the war against Russia and said the delivery of high mobility artillery rocket systems (HIMARS) from the United States had made a big difference for Kyiv. ... Ukrainian troops arrived in the centre of Kherson on Friday after Russia abandoned the only regional capital it had captured since Moscow launched its invasion." (11/14/22)

5)  Disgraced former president sues Capitol riot exploitation committee to avoid testifying
Source: CNBC

"Former President Donald Trump filed a lawsuit Friday night to avoid cooperating with a subpoena from the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol. Trump's lawyers argue that while 'other Presidents and former Presidents have voluntarily agreed to testify or turn over documents in response to a congressional subpoena, no President or former President has ever been compelled to do so,' according to the 41-page filing. Trump was issued a subpoena by the committee in October and was scheduled to be deposed on Nov. 14, a day before his 'big announcement' on Nov. 15 at his Mar-a-Lago resort, where he is widely expected to announce the launch of his 2024 presidential campaign. ... The House select committee voted unanimously on the subpoena and is demanding Trump's testimony under oath as well as records relevant to the probe into the attack." (11/12/22)

6)  India: Rajiv Gandhi's killers released after court order
Source: Al Jazeera [Qatar state media]

"The last co-conspirators jailed for the 1991 assassination of former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi have been released from prison, one day after an order from the country's Supreme Court. Gandhi, 46, was killed by a female suicide bomber at an election rally in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu in a plot by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), a Sri Lankan armed separatist group. India's apex court allowed the release of the six convicts, citing their 'satisfactory conduct' in prison and the fact that they had already served more than 30 years behind bars. ... Rajiv's killing was seen as a response to his move to send Indian forces to Sri Lanka in 1987 to disarm the Tamil rebels. India lost more than 1,000 men against the well-entrenched rebels before it withdrew its troops." (11/12/22)

8)  Musk shoots down report that Tesla will export China-made cars to the US
Source: Fox News

"Tesla CEO Elon Musk on Friday denied a Reuters report that the electric vehicle manufacturer was considering exporting its cars made in China to the United States. In characteristically brief fashion, Musk replied 'False' in response to a Reuters story: 'Tesla mulls exporting China-made EVs to United States. The company did not immediately respond to FOX Business's request for comment on the story. According to the report, Tesla has been studying whether parts made by its China-based suppliers are compliant with local regulations in North America. If so, the company is reportedly deciding whether to ship China-made Model Y and Model 3 cars for sale there as soon as next year. Were that to happen, it could potentially set up a channel for exports to Canada, anonymous sources close to the matter told Reuters." (11/13/22)

9)  Biden accepts Heimatschutz border gang shot-caller's resignation
Source: Reuters

"President Joe Biden has accepted the resignation of U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Christopher Magnus, the White House said in a statement on Saturday. The statement comes a day after U.S. media said Magnus had been asked to resign or was fired in a sign of tension within Biden's administration over a record number of migrant crossings at the U.S.-Mexico border. ... The number of migrants [abducted] at the U.S.-Mexico border has soared to record highs under Biden, a Democrat who took office in 2021, fueling attacks by Republicans who say his policies are too lenient." 10) France: Border checks in force over Italy's migrant policy
Source: SFGate

"Lines formed Sunday at Italy's northern border crossings with France following Paris'[s] decision to reinforce border controls over a diplomatic row with Italy about migration policy and humanitarian rescue ships that shows no end in sight. The Ventimiglia-Menton crossing along the picturesque Mediterranean coast has often been a flashpoint of the migrant debate, with makeshift camps giving shelter to migrants who try to cross into France after arriving in Italy. On Sunday morning, several dozen migrants were sleeping on mattresses under a highway overpass -- numbers that could swell as France cracks down on crossings. France announced this week it was sending 500 extra officers to beef up its frontiers with Italy in retaliation for Italy's delays in helping humanitarian ships that rescue migrants in the Mediterranean. Police patrolled trains and roads across the border Sunday, stopping migrants." (11/13/22)

Source: WION [India]

"In the midst of widespread demonstrations following the [police murder] of Mahsa Amini, local media stated that Iran's judiciary had accused more than 750 individuals in three provinces for taking part in 'recent riots.' Since the protests started in mid-September, more than 2,000 people have already been accused, with about half of them in Tehran, according to judicial data. The disturbances, which the authorities have referred to as 'riots,' have resulted in the deaths of dozens of individuals, most of whom were protesters but also included security officers. ... Source: BBC News [UK state media]

"Two vintage World War Two-era planes have collided and crashed at an air show in the US state of Texas, killing six people. Footage shows the aircraft striking each other at a low altitude, breaking one of the aircraft in half. A fireball can be seen as it hits the ground. The planes -- one of them a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress -- were taking part in a commemorative air show near Dallas. Firefighters said there were no injuries among people on the ground. 'According to our Dallas County Medical Examiner, there are a total of six fatalities from yesterday's Wings over Dallas air show incident,' Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins said in a tweet on Sunday. 13) Swedish cyclist pedals to Egypt to raise climate awareness
Source: Killeen Daily Herald

"She has pedaled thousands of miles from Sweden to Egypt's Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh to deliver a simple message: Stop climate change. The trip took 72-year-old activist Dorothee Hildebrandt and her pink e-bike -- which she fondly calls Miss Piggy, after the temperamental character from The Muppet Show -- more than four months. She crisscrossed Europe and the Middle East until she arrived in Sharm el-Sheikh, at the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula. Her mission is to raise awareness and urge world leaders gathered at the annual U.N. climate conference known as COP27 to take concrete steps to stop climate change, she said. Greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise and scientists say the amount of heat-trapping gases needs to be almost halved by 2030, to meet temperature-limiting goals of the Paris climate accord of 2015." 14) China: Regime clings to failed "zero COVID" approach as rise in cases reported
Source: ABC News

"Everyone in a district of 1.8 million people in China's southern metropolis of Guangzhou was ordered to stay home for virus testing Saturday and a major city in the southwest closed schools as another rise in infections was reported. Nationwide, a total of 11,773 infections were reported over the previous 24 hours, including 10,351 people with no symptoms. China's numbers are low, but the past week's increase is challenging a 'zero-COVID' strategy that aims to isolate every infected person. The quarantine for travelers arriving in China is to be shortened to a minimum of five days from seven as part of changes in controls announced Friday to reduce their cost and disruption. But the ruling Communist Party said it would stick to 'zero COVID' even as other countries ease travel and other curbs and try to shift to a long-term strategy of living with the virus." (11/12/22)

"The collapse of cryptocurrency exchange FTX is the subject of scrutiny from government investigators in the Bahamas, who are looking at whether any 'criminal misconduct occurred,' the Royal Bahamas Police said on Sunday. FTX filed for bankruptcy on Friday, one of the highest profile crypto blowups, after traders rushed to withdraw $6 billion from the platform in just 72 hours and rival exchange Binance abandoned a proposed rescue deal. In a statement on Sunday, the Royal Bahamas Police said: 'In light of the collapse of FTX globally and the provisional liquidation of FTX Digital Markets Ltd, a team of financial investigators from the Financial Crimes Investigation Branch are working closely with the Bahamas Securities Commission to investigate if any criminal misconduct occurred.' Fanta Bility was exiting the August 2021 game with her mom and 12-year-old sister when gunfire erupted between the officers -- Brian Devaney, 42, Sean Dolan, 26, and Devon Smith, 35 -- and a group of teenagers. Fanta was blasted in the chest and died from her injuries after being rushed to the hospital. Two other kids, including her sister, were also wounded in the chaos. The former Sharon Hill cops each pleaded guilty to 10 counts of reckless endangerment ... Source: Fox News

"An instructional assistant at a Florida high school has reportedly complained about her coworker's parking space that quotes a verse from the New Testament, saying it offends her 'as a Jewish person.' Marina Gentilesco, who works at Wiregrass Ranch High School in Pasco County, Florida, said she has been angered every day she passed by her coworker's parking lot that is painted with Philippians 4:13, which reads, 'I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me,' according to local Fox affiliate Fox 59. 'I feel like it's attacking me as a Jew,' she said, according to the outlet. Source: NDTV [India]

"Mehran Karimi Nasseri, the Iranian exile whose time spent at Paris'[s] Charles de Gaulle airport inspired filmmaker Steven Spielberg's movie 'The Terminal,' on Saturday, died of a heart attack in Terminal 2F of the same airport, reported Variety. The outlet has shared that Mehran, who also went by the name Sir Alfred, had been living in the airport again in recent weeks. He lived in Terminal 1 of Charles de Gaulle Airport. It was in 1988 that Mehran first settled at the airport after the United Kingdom denied him political asylum as a refugee despite the fact that he had a Scottish mother. 19) Dog bites man: Dave Chappelle courts controversy in "SNL" monologue
Source: SFGate

"The audience roared and the brass band bellowed as Dave Chappelle took the stage for his contentious hosting gig on 'Saturday Night Live' over the weekend -- his first appearance on the show since the 2020 presidential election and the spectacular fallout that ensued a year later when the stand-up comic delivered a barrage of homophobic and transphobic remarks in his Netflix special 'The Closer.' The backlash was swift, resulting in mass employee walkouts, as well as widespread condemnation of Chappelle and threats to cancel subscriptions to the Los Gatos-based streaming service. Throughout most of his opening monologue, though, Chappelle steered clear of his own controversy, instead taking jabs at Ye (better known as Kanye West), Brooklyn Nets point guard Kyrie Irving and U.S. Senate candidate Herschel Walker before warning the studio audience that the Trump era isn't over." 21) Election 2022: Time for the "Spoiler" Whining
Source: Garrison Center
by Thomas L Knapp

"Libertarian Chase Oliver garnered a little more than 2% of the vote in Georgia's US Senate race. His efforts prevented either incumbent Democrat Raphael Warnock or Republican challenger Herschel Walker from winning the election with a majority. Georgia's election laws require such a majority, so now the election goes to a Warnock-Walker runoff. That's how democracy works, at least in Georgia. And every time a 'major party' candidate loses an election or is forced into a runoff by a Libertarian, Green, or other third party or independent candidate, a festival of tears and butt-hurt ensues. This is only a 'problem' for those who believe that votes inherently 'belong' to one of the two 'major' parties and their candidates, and that those pesky third party and independent contenders are 'stealing' votes from one or the other. Votes don't belong to parties or candidates. They belong to voters." (11/12/22)

24) NIMBYism and Economic Ignorance
Source: The Volokh Conspiracy
by Ilya Somin

"Zoning restrictions on the construction of new housing inflict immense harm by cutting off millions of people from housing, educational, and job opportunities. Even current homeowners who have no desire to move can often benefit from deregulation. Nonetheless, NIMBY ('not in my backyard') sentiments are a major obstacle to new construction and often block reform. The standard explanation for NIMBYism is that current homeowners rationally conclude that new construction is inimical to their interests, even if benefits society as a whole. But, 'Folk Economics and the Persistence of Political Opposition to New Housing,' a new article by legal scholar Chris Elmendorf and political scientists Clayton Nall and Stan Oklobdzija finds that simple economic ignorance is a a major factor." "The past two years of American life have been tumultuous by any country's standards. More than a million deaths in a mismanaged pandemic, a homegrown attack on the seat of government, a judicial decision that targeted millions of women and inflation soaring to a 40-year high, all while the former president looms on the sidelines. These sorts of things usually upend politics, at minimum delivering a firm rebuke of the incumbent, and in some cases producing a complete realignment. ... But the US appears immune to such shifts. In an election that promised, variously, a red wave of inflation-induced anger, a blue backlash over abortion rights and a Trumpian revival among Republican ranks, the most stunning takeaway is not how much has changed, but how little." 27) Society's War on the Mentally "Ill" Gets Political
Source: exile in happy valley
by Nicky Reid

"It is only after centuries of abuse at the hands of sadistic cops and role-crazy shrinks that America's mentally unstable class find themselves lashing out recklessly at a cruel system designed to contain us along with the stable people it benefits. The result is an epic crime spree of blowback in the streets of America's wealthiest and most economically unequal metropolitan areas and increasingly this violence is spilling over into the palatial estates of the monied elites with a rash of quasi-partisan attacks on the once sacred cows of the Beltway duopoly. None of this should be misconstrued as a defense. This kind of nihilism solves nothing, and initiatory violence is always despicable but for the straight world to act like this carnage is unprovoked amounts to gaslighting of epic proportions." 28) The tragedy of Russia
Source: spiked
by Mary Dejevsky

"Russia, too, is paying a price, though perhaps not yet as high a price as Ukraine and its Western allies might hope. It has likely suffered more casualties than Ukraine. It has lost many of its best-educated young people to exile, and seen its post-imperial weakness mercilessly exposed. But there is another dimension to Russia's tragedy that is less obvious, but which may become clearer over time. There is a view, held by as many Russians as outsiders, that Russia is unique not just in its culture, but also in its resistance to the West's supposedly decadent ways. History, geography and religion are all advanced to support the idea that Russia was not, is not and never can be one of us. To believe this, however, is to ignore recent history." (11/13/22)

29) Democrats Need to Fire Their Corporate-Conflicted Political Consultants
Source: Common Dreams
by Ralph Nader

"[T]he Red Wave predicted by pollsters and trumpeted by The New York Times and other media almost daily did not materialize. If there was any wave, it was a blue one, victorious for direct democracy ballot measures raising the minimum wage in Nebraska, Nevada, and Washington, D.C. Even in GOP-ruled South Dakota, voters overwhelmingly approved Medicaid expansion via a constitutional amendment. Control of the Senate hangs on the Senate races in Arizona, Nevada, and the Georgia runoff in early December between Warnock and Walker. This year, the Senate Democrats had the advantage with twenty Republican seats up for re-election as compared with fourteen Democratic seats. ... The more fundamental question is why the Democrats did not landslide the Republicans nationally." (11/12/22)

30) The Trump Excuses That Don't Work
Source: National Review
by Rich Lowry

"If Trump was Humpty Dumpy on Election Night, as the New York Post had it, his devotees are scrambling to try to pick up the pieces. First of all, it must be said that, obviously, more was at work in the Republican disappointment than just Trump. No one person is responsible for what happened in the midterms. Trump, though, is clearly more responsible than anyone else. The effort to exculpate and vindicate him relies on misdirection and blame-shifting and is thoroughly unconvincing." (11/13/22)

32) Why Ron DeSantis looks just like Bill Clinton in 1992
Source: New York Post
by Charles CW Cooke

"In attempting to describe Florida Governor Ron DeSantis over the last four years, the press has reached for a whole host of inapt comparisons: He's Donald Trump! He's Scott Walker! He's Satan! But none of these seem right. Instead -- and hear me out! -- he may well be Bill Clinton. No, not morally. Despite Donald Trump's grotesque insinuation that there is something 'unflattering' about DeSantis that only he knows about, there's no indication that Florida's governor is anything other than an upstanding husband and father. But, in other respects, the parallels are clear. Like Clinton, DeSantis is a young governor from the South entering his political prime against a backdrop of inertia and irritation with the status quo." 33) Five Counterintuitive Things I Learned Reading Ayn Rand's "The Fountainhead"
Source: Foundation for Economic Education
by Patrick Carroll

"I recently picked up Ayn Rand's 1943 novel The Fountainhead, and I must say I quite enjoyed it. For those who haven't read it, The Fountainhead is a story about a young architect named Howard Roark. Roark is a non-conformist who finds himself at odds with the rest of his profession because of his refusal to compromise his artistic expression for the sake of tradition. It goes deeper than that, however. Roark's self-described worldview is 'egotism,'and it's this selfish, individualistic attitude that the rest of the world can't seem to stand, save a few of his close friends." (11/11/22)

34) Joe Biden and the "Transformational" Presidency
Source: Ludwig von Mises Institute
by William L Anderson

"Much is made of the failure of Republicans to make predicted gains in the recent midterm elections, but, as Ryan McMaken has pointed out, Congress plays a much-diminished role in national governance to the point that even had the so-called Red Wave actually occurred, it is doubtful that much would have changed regarding Joe Biden's presidency. In fact, most of what Biden has done in his two years in office has been outside of Congressional legislative matters. ... Biden has used executive orders liberally, sometimes using a twisted interpretation of federal law, and then unleashing his regulatory and law enforcement agencies to get his desired results." 35) Biden Would Be a Disaster in 2024
Source: Salon
by Norman Solomon

"No amount of post-election puffery about Joe Biden can change a key political reality: His approval ratings are far below the public's general positivity toward the Democratic Party. Overall, Democrats who won in the midterm elections did so despite Biden, not because of him. He's a drag on the party, a boon to Republicans, and -- if he runs again -- he'd be a weak candidate against the GOP nominee in the 2024 presidential campaign. While the electorate is evenly split between the two parties, there's no such close division about Biden. NBC News reported that its exit poll on Tuesday found that 'two-thirds of voters (68 percent) do not want Biden to run for president again in 2024.' ... The gap between Biden's approval ratings and those of his party underscores what a massive drag he is on Democratic electoral prospects." (11/12/22)

36) Kudos to the Los Angeles Times
Source: Future of Freedom Foundation
by Jacob G Hornberger

"Kudos to the Los Angeles Times for its editorial today about Brittney Griner, the U.S. basketball star who is serving a 9-year jail sentence in Russia for possessing a small quantity of marijuana. Griner was recently transferred to a Russian penal colony to serve out her sentence. According to people who have been in such colonies, they are extremely nasty places to be. As I was reading its editorial, I was thinking to myself that this was going to be just another U.S. mainstream media article calling on those evil Russkies to release Griner and send her home. But then I got to the end of the editorial and was stunned. ... Here is a U.S. mainstream media outlet that is actually criticizing U.S. drug laws and implicitly exposing the rank hypocrisy behind such laws in the context of the Griner case. How often do you see that? I dare say not very often." (11/11/22)

37) The United States, China, and great power competition in the Middle East
Source: Responsible Statecraft
by Chas Freeman

"It's official. The Biden administration agrees with the Trump administration that almost everything that happens in world affairs can be explained by two interlocking zero-sum contests. One is geopolitical, as in 'great power rivalry.' The other is ideological, as in 'democracy vs. authoritarianism.' ... to a remarkable degree, the situation in the contemporary Middle East refutes Washington's current foreign policy dogma. Very little that now occurs in the region can be explained by either great power rivalry or ideological contests between democracy and. authoritarianism. The great powers, notably including the United States, have lost their grip on the place. And no one is trying to impose new systems of governance on it anymore." (11/12/22)

38) GOP Future Is With a Governor, Not Trump
Source: Town Hall
by Michael Reagan

"DeSantis, Kemp and Abbott. Those governors were not just the Republican Party's brightest stars in this week's disappointing midterm elections. With their smashing victories Tuesday night, they showed us they're the future of the GOP -- and the party's best hope for retaking the White House in 2024. Ron DeSantis in Florida, Brian Kemp in Georgia and Greg Abbott in Texas -- each could move into the White House and quickly begin fixing the serious economic, immigration and fiscal fiascos Biden and Democrats have created. ... But what about that other guy? You know, that crazy ex-president reality-TV guy from New York with the red hats and the huge campaign rallies? Trump, I think his name was. Well, he wasn't actually running for anything this week -- just stirring political things up in his usual divisive and headline-grabbing way." (11/12/22)

39) The Attempt to Anoint Ron DeSantis as Trump's Heir Will Fail

by Alex Shephard

"DeSantis is now enjoying the kind of moment pols dream about. The mainstream and conservative media have anointed him not just a rising star on the right, but perhaps the leading contender for the Republican Party's 2024 presidential nomination. Betting markets are rating him that way. And, on the right, there has been a coordinated effort to boost DeSantis's profile -- and to paint Donald Trump, correctly, as the biggest reason why Republicans fell short of expectations in the midterm elections. But there are plenty of reasons to believe that DeSantis is being overhyped." (11/11/22)

40) Politicians' Self-Interest and Dishonesty
Source: EconLog
by Pierre Lemieux

"Trump has never been known to take honesty as a virtue. Perhaps he simply does not realize that there exists an external reality distinct from his wishes and words, but I will ignore this possibility as a separate hypothesis. The picture painted by Mr. Pence in the WSJ excerpts is consistent with what other high-level collaborators of Trump described in their own recollections. One may think that a ruler's dishonesty is not catastrophic in a constitutional -- that is, limited -- government, because the system is supposed to be foolproof against that. ... There are many flaws in the hope that a knave can do no bad at the helm of the state as we know it. The first problem is that contemporary democratic governments have acquired irresistible powers to intervene in most areas of life." (11/11/22)

41) The Real Republican Dilemma
Source: The American Prospect
by Harold Meyerson

"Do Republicans even have a legislative agenda? As I write on Thursday afternoon, it seems increasingly plausible that they'll narrowly control the House, and increasingly implausible that they'll control the Senate. But if they're in control anywhere, what is it that they propose to do--other than conduct hearings into the 'scandals' of the Biden regime, adhering closely to the venerable evidentiary criteria established at the Salem witchcraft trials? (If that analogy seems overblown, see: Republican Benghazi Hearings, 2013–2015, in which six (6!) separate Republican-led committees held 'investigations.') But legislatively? Will the incoming Republicans pursue a ban on abortion? Their all-but-official new position on that is 'Who? Us?' Raise taxes on the poor and middle class, as Florida Sen. Rick Scott suggested earlier this year? Whereupon Mitch McConnell almost immediately told Scott to shut up." (11/11/22)

42) Broken Incentives
Source: Quillette
by Claire Lehmann

"In October, a study published in PLOS One provided some fresh insight into how and why American media has become so dysfunctional. Over the past 20 years, the study reported, headlines that convey anger, fear, sadness, and disgust have been increasing, while headlines conveying neutrality or joy have been in decline. These trends have coincided with a massive drop in trust in news journalism, particularly in the US. ... Angertainment may be profitable for journalism in the short-term but over the long-term it trashes the integrity of the profession. Angertainment is unlikely the sole cause of US political polarisation, but it certainly hasn't helped. Just as mad cow disease was caused by feeding bovine-meal to cows, angertainment feeds on polarisation which in turn feeds on angertainment. It's a cannibalistic cycle." (11/11/22)

by Sheldon Richman

"As midterm elections go, for champions of individual liberty this one could have been worse. I see two bright spots. The likely slim majority of Republicans in the House could -- maybe -- produce a measure of gridlock on domestic spending and regulation, and the blame for the Republicans' substandard midterm performance might fall entirely on Donald Trump, driving him from the stage. When you consider all the possible outcomes from Tuesday, that's not bad. In most midterm years the only outcome worth hoping for is gridlock." (11/11/22)

44) Non-MAGA Conservatives Might Have Found the Leader They Were Looking for In Ron DeSantis
Source: The Daily Beast
by Matt Lewis

"Going into the midterms, I assumed Republicans would perform well enough to prevent them from having to do any soul-searching or make any changes. This has been the pattern: Trump's surprise victory in 2016 taught Republicans that they didn't have to make any changes, the 2018 midterm losses could be dismissed as the historical norm for the party in power, and Trump's 2020 loss couldn't possibly be instructive, since he actually won the election. (He did not win the election, but he did try to steal it after he lost.) Tuesday night's midterm results make it much harder for Republicans to pretend that they are on the right track. ... For those of us who are longing to find a way to once again vote Republican, DeSantis holds promise. ... Unfortunately, it's not an easy solution. It might even be a case of 'Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.'" (11/11/22)

45) Comedians can't take a joke: The silly backlash to Dave Chappelle hosting SNL
Source: Washington Examiner
by Brad Polumbo

"Having fallen far from its great days, Saturday Night Live now typically attracts attention only when a rare nonwoke, actually funny skit goes viral, when the show has a famous guest host, or when it's involved in some sort of controversy. This week, it's the latter two. The wildly popular, anti-woke comedian Dave Chappelle is hosting this week's episode of SNL, and Chappelle getting the gig has brought about backlash. Very, very stupid backlash. According to Page Six, the backlash is even coming from inside the house, with some SNL writers reportedly boycotting the episode and refusing to work on it. One SNL writer, Celeste Yim, seemed to imply participation in this boycott, tweeting after the announcement: 'I'm trans and non-binary. I use they/them pronouns. Transphobia is murder and it should be condemned. (I guess 'they' can't take a joke.)" (11/12/22)

46) Pay Attention to Policy, not "Narratives"
Source: Reason
by Steven Greenhut

"As a policy wonk, I view each election as a calculation of which candidate is most likely to advance the limited-government policies that I favor. It's rarely an easy choice given that neither of the major parties is particularly libertarian and smaller parties tend to be goofy and have almost no chance of winning. Republicans sometimes talk like libertarians on issues related to taxes, regulation, and spending, but promote police-state policies (asset forfeiture, the drug war), tariffs, tech regulation, and other nonsense that ramps up federal power. I'm far from simpatico with Democrats, but they have been decent on deregulating housing and promoting justice reform. So, it gets complicated. As a voter, I look not just at the totality of issues, but their importance." (11/11/22)

47) Micronations: Eccentric and Unthreatening
Source: CounterPunch
by Binoy Kampmark

"A trolley load of books, chapters and treatises have been written on the subject of sovereignty. Usually, the concept entails control and power, the latter a corollary of the former. In international law, sovereignty finds some form of expression in the Montevideo Convention of 1933 but can hardly be seen as exhaustive. ... this leaves some room for the pantomime element sovereignty might allow: the eccentric who declares his own principality; the refusenik determined to avoid the taxing authorities; the clerical error that might spawn a new creation. That such entities are permitted to exist, however, lies in an enduring conceit. No army in modern times -- barring, exception -- is going to expend its resources against daft declarations of sovereignty over randomly picked stretches of land. The problem lies, however, in the risks, or lack of them, such declarations pose to the central authorities." (11/11/22)

49) How the Democrats Won and Lost the 2022 Midterms
Source: In These Times
by Maurice Mitchell

"The normal pattern of midterm elections, where the party in power loses significant ground, is practically baked into the U.S. two-party system. When voters are upset, the only way to punish the party in power is to vote for the other one. That's what happened in 2006, in 2010, in 2014 and in 2018. And that's what national pundits were claiming was inevitable in 2022; they predicted a 'red wave' even when many polls showed a much closer race. But instead, this year Democrats defied political gravity, at least somewhat. So how did it happen? As the leader of an independent third party (the Working Families Party (WFP)) that often joins the Democrats in coalition, I see four main factors at play." (11/11/22)

"My blood still boils at the thought of lockdowns, and my anger at those persons who imposed them is as intense a sensation as I have ever experienced. It continues to be so. I relate my early, unequivocal, and unending opposition to lockdowns not to applaud myself. I do so, instead, to put into context the case that I'm about to make in opposition to any and all calls for attempts to impose formal liability or sanctions on those individuals who inflicted lockdowns on humanity, or who were prominently positioned to encourage their use. I believe that attempts to hold lockdowners personally accountable by imposing on them formal punishments would create yet another terrible precedent, one that would only compound the troubles that we're destined to suffer from the precedent that was set in March 2020."
