1)  Ukraine: Regime rules out ceasefire and ceding territory
Source: CNBC

"Ukraine and Poland have agreed to work on joint border controls as well as a shared railway company to relieve the movement of people and grow Ukraine's export potential. Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said that only diplomacy will end the war with Russia, as his top officials rule out a ceasefire or ceding any territory. Russia continues its push into the Donbas with heavy strikes on numerous cities in eastern Ukraine." (05/22/22)

2)  Average US gasoline price jumps 33 cents to $4.71 per gallon
Source: Aol

"The average U.S. price of regular-grade gasoline spiked 33 cents over the past two weeks to $4.71 per gallon. Industry analyst Trilby Lundberg of the Lundberg Survey said Sunday that the price jump comes amid higher crude oil costs and tight gasoline supplies. The average price at the pump is $1.61 higher than it was one year ago." (05/22/22)

3)  Ethiopia: Amhara region regime thugs abduct four staff members of media group
Source: WTVB News

"Authorities in Ethiopia's northern Amhara region have arrested four employees of a U.S.-based online media outlet, while the whereabouts of two others was unclear, the broadcaster said on Sunday, in the latest round of arrests involving media. The arrests would add to those of five journalists in another Amhara media outlet on Thursday over what their colleague said was the outlet's reporting of the activity of a local volunteer militia, known as Fano. ... Amhara is the second-most populous region in Ethiopia, and a key constituency for Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. But recently some Amhara leaders who previously backed his government have publicly criticised his handling of a war with the neighbouring region of Tigray. ... The arrests add to those of a prominent general critical of Abiy, and some ethnic Amhara activists in the last week." (05/22/22)

4)  NY: Judge approves congressional map, throwing Democrats into disarray
Source: Reuters

"A New York judge approved a new congressional map that pits two veteran Democratic incumbents against one another and boosts Republican odds of capturing more seats in November's midterm elections, further endangering Democrats' fragile U.S. House majority. Justice Patrick McAllister, a judge in rural Steuben County, signed off on the map just before midnight on Friday, weeks after New York's top court ruled that the redistricting plan passed by the Democratic-controlled legislature was unconstitutionally manipulated to benefit the party. The Democratic map would likely have given the party control of 22 of the state's 26 congressional seats this fall, serving to counterbalance similarly partisan maps passed in Republican-dominated states such as Florida, Georgia and Texas." 5)  Turkey: Regime summons US ambassador to whine over warning on protest suppression methods
Source: ABC News

"The U.S. ambassador to Ankara has been summoned to the Turkish Foreign Ministry over a warning to U.S. citizens in Turkey about attending a political rally that referred to police crowd control methods, state-run media said Sunday. The embassy posted a message on its website on May 18 ahead of an Istanbul rally for the opposition People's Republican Party, or CHP, on Saturday evening. 'The Turkish National Police have used measures, including water cannons, tear gas and non-lethal projectiles, to control crowds at protests in the past,' the alert to U.S. citizens in Turkey stated. 'There is a strong possibility similar measures will be employed at this demonstration.' The state-run Anadolu news agency, citing unnamed ministry sources, reported that Ambassador Jeffry Flake was summoned so the Turkish government could express its 'discomfort' over 'the unfounded allegations' in the U.S. warning." 6)  Finland: Brewery launches NATO beer with "taste of security"
Source: US News & World Report

"A small brewery in Finland has launched a NATO-themed beer to mark the Nordic country's bid to join the Western military alliance. Olaf Brewing's OTAN lager features a blue label with a cartoon version of a beer-drinking medieval knight in metal armor emblazoned with NATO's compass symbol. The beer's name is a play on the Finnish expression 'Otan olutta' (which means 'I'll have a beer') and the French abbreviation for NATO, which is 'OTAN.' The North Atlantic Treaty Organization has two official languages, English and French. CEO Petteri Vanttinen told The Associated Press on Thursday that the craft brewery's ad hoc decision last weekend to start producing the beer was motivated by 'worries over the war in Ukraine' and its consequences for Finland. He described the new lager as having 'a taste of security, with a hint of freedom.'" (05/22/22)

7)  Donalds introduces House bill to prevent regime from banning crypto in 401(k) plans
Source: CoinTelegraph

"Representative Byron Donalds, a Florida Republican, introduced the Financial Freedom Act into the United States House of Representatives on Friday to prevent the U.S. Department of Labor from limiting the types of investments that can be included in Americans' self-directed 401(k) retirement plans. The bill is the companion to Alabama Senato Tommy Tuberville's May 5 Senate bill. The Financial Freedom Act was introduced as a reaction to a U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) compliance report dated March 10 that raised objections to the inclusion of cryptocurrencies in 401(k) retirement plans." 8)  FL: Regime suspends abortion clinic after hospitalizations
Source: SFGate

"An abortion clinic that serves women from all over the U.S. South had its license suspended this weekend under an emergency order from Florida health officials after two women who had undergone procedures at the clinic were hospitalized this year. The state Agency for Health Care Administration ordered the suspension of the license for American Family Planning of Pensacola, effective starting Saturday. In cases cited by the agency, the clinic failed to monitor the patients at all times, didn't provide medical records when patients were transferred for greater care and didn't contact the patients within 24 hours after they left the clinic to assess their recovery, said the order which was issued on Friday. It said the problems were operational deficiencies 'endangering the health, safety and welfare' of the clinic's patients, and the clinic failed to submit timely reports about the incidents to the state agency." 9)  CA: Intruder Shot in Armed Confrontation With Homeowner
Source: NBC Los Angeles

"A man who apparently entered a Walnut home in a burglary attempt was shot and killed during an exchange gunfire early Saturday morning with the homeowner, authorities said. A 27-year-old man and his 26-year-old wife said they heard footsteps at about 4 a.m. Saturday while they were inside their home in the 20000 block of East Country Hollow Drive, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Walnut is in eastern Los Angeles county. The couple was investigating the sound when the man was confronted by an intruder armed with a handgun. 'The suspect sustained gunshot wounds to his upper torso and was pronounced deceased at the scene,' the sheriff's department said." (05/21/22)

10) AR: Governor is odd man out in his own state's primary
Source: Mercury News

"Based on the barrage of television ads and mailers leading up to Tuesday's primary election in Arkansas, it's obvious who the most influential Republicans in the state are. Tom Cotton's making the case for fellow Sen. John Boozman, talking up his conservative bona fides while the two-term senator fends off challenges from the right. Donald Trump's image appears in ads for Boozman and for Sarah Sanders, who served as the former president's White House press secretary and is now running for governor. ... conspicuously missing from the ads and the campaign trail is the state's top elected Republican, Gov. Asa Hutchinson, who is entering the final stretch of his term with strong approval ratings and a raised national profile. Hutchinson's advisers say that's because he's concentrating on helping more Republicans nationally as he looks to the future -- which might include a White House bid." (05/22/22)

11) Canada: Nearly a million homes lose power in high winds
Source: BBC News [UK state media]

"Nearly 900,000 homes in southern Canada were left without power on Saturday after a severe storm hit the provinces of Ontario and Quebec. Four people were killed by falling trees and a woman died when a boat capsized in the Ottawa River. Wind gusts reached 82 mph (132km/h) during the storm, according to Environment Canada. Power company Hydro One, which covers Ontario, said it would take several days to reconnect every home. Meanwhile, Hydro Quebec said 550,000 homes there lost power, with nearly 400,000 still suffering outages as of 14:00 GMT (10:00 local time) on Sunday. The powerful thunderstorm, which lasted more than two hours, felled many trees, disrupted traffic, damaged homes and saw emergency services inundated with calls for help." (05/22/22)

12) Palestine: Israeli forces murder teen
Source: Al Jazeera [Qatar state media]

"Israeli troops shot and killed a teenage Palestinian boy as they raided the northern city of Jenin in the occupied West Bank, the Palestinian health ministry and local media said. The health ministry identified the dead teen as Amjad al-Fayyed, 17. It said an 18-year-old Palestinian was in a critical condition after being wounded by Israeli gunfire. ... Local media reported confrontations erupted outside Jenin's refugee camp when Israeli forces stormed the area, and al-Fayyed was hit by about a dozen rounds fired into the upper part of his body. The Israeli military said Palestinian suspects fired on its soldiers and threw fire bombs at them." (05/21/22)

13) GA: Boys to Men program teaches responsibility, respect
Source: SFGate

"Reginald Willis and a group of Barnett Shoals Elementary School kids arrived in Atlanta in early May to tour the World of Coca-Cola, and then the Civil and Human Rights Museum. The day of adventure was marked with fun and life lessons for the group of boys who are part of Willis'[s] Boys to Men program. And it was one of the most memorable moments for Jaden Jackson, a fifth-grade student at Barnett Shoals who has been with the program for three years. 'It taught me a lot of stuff about how [b]lack people back then changed our lives now,' he recalled of his trip to the Civil and Human Rights Museum. ... 14) Federal Judge Blocks Biden Regime From Ending COVID-19 Excuse for Immigration Authoritarianism
Source: Time

"Adistrict judge ruled Friday that the Biden Administration must continue to expel migrants under Title 42, a COVID-19-related health [sic] measure first implemented under President Donald Trump. The decision delivers a blow to the Administration's plan to end the controversial program on May 23. The ruling prevents the Administration from ending the policy until a full trial on the merits is held, which is likely to take many months. Judge Robert Summerhays from the U.S. District Court Western District of Louisiana Lafayette Division sided with attorneys general from Arizona, Missouri, and Louisiana, who brought a lawsuit on April 3 arguing that the Administration's move to end Title 42 failed to meet standards set by the Administrative Procedure Act." 15) Musk challenges "liar" accusing him of sexual misconduct to describe private parts
Source: Fox News

"Elon Musk challenged the woman who accused him of sexual misconduct to describe details of his intimate body parts that are 'not known by the public' in a bid to disprove her claims. 'But I have a challenge to this liar who claims their friend saw me 'exposed': describe just one thing, anything at all (scars, tattoos, ...) that isn't known by the public. She won't be able to do so, because it never happened.' Musk tweeted this on Friday, in response to a Twitter user asking what the accusations were. A former flight attendant working on a contract basis in the cabin crew for SpaceX's corporate jet fleet accused Musk of exposing his erect penis to her, rubbing her leg without consent, and offering to buy her a horse in exchange for an erotic massage, Insider reported last week." 16) Occupied Ireland: US has "unwavering" support of Good Friday Agreement
Source: BBC News [UK state media]

"US congressman Richard Neal has said the US will be 'as unwavering as is necessary' in its support of the Good Friday Agreement. It comes amid heightened tensions over the Northern Ireland Protocol. Mr Neal met with Liz Truss on Saturday and urged the UK to have "good faith" talks with the EU to find solutions to the protocol. But the DUP leader Sir Jeffrey Donaldson warned the protocol will 'destroy the Good Friday Agreement.' Responding to calls from the US to 'fully implement' the protocol, Sir Jeffrey said 'implementing the protocol means ending grace periods with an economic tsunami hitting Northern Ireland.' 'Power sharing only works with cross-community consensus. There is no unionist support for the protocol,' he added, in a tweet. Mr Neal is leading a congressional delegation visiting the UK and Ireland." (05/22/22)

Source: Canadian Broadcasting Corporation [Canadian state media]

"Former U.S. president Donald Trump has paid the $110,000 US in fines he racked up after being held in contempt of court for being slow to respond to a civil subpoena issued by New York's attorney general. Trump paid the fine Thursday but must still submit additional paperwork in order to have the contempt order lifted, the office of New York Attorney General Letitia James said Friday. A message seeking comment was left Friday with Trump's lawyer. A Manhattan judge declared Trump in contempt of court on April 25 and fined him $10,000 US per day for not complying with a subpoena in James'[s] long-running investigation into his business practices." 18) Sussmann trial: Campaign manager says Clinton personally approved "Russiagate" fraud
Source: CNN

"Hillary Clinton personally approved her campaign's plans in fall 2016 to share information with a reporter about an uncorroborated alleged server backchannel between Donald Trump and a top Russian bank, her former campaign manager testified Friday in federal court. Robby Mook said he attended a meeting with other senior campaign officials where they [drummed up a fairy tale of] strange cyberactivity that [could be used to falsely claim] a relationship between the Trump Organization and Alfa Bank, which is based in Moscow. The group decided to [plant the fairy tale] with a reporter, and Mook subsequently ran that decision by Clinton herself. ... The testimony came in the criminal trial of Clinton campaign lawyer Michael Sussmann, who is being prosecuted by the Trump-era special counsel John Durham." (05/20/22)

20) San Francisco archbishop bans Nancy Pelosi from receiving communion over abortion support
Source: ABC 7 News

"San Francisco Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone notified House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in a letter Friday that she is banned from receiving holy communion due to her continued support of abortion rights. Cordileone said that he sent her a letter April 7 expressing his concerns after she vowed to codify the Supreme Court's Row [sic] vs. Wade decision into law once Texas approved a law banning most abortions. He said Pelosi never responded. Cordileone said he told Pelosi in the April letter that she must either repudiate her support of abortion rights or stop speaking publicly about her Catholic faith and that if she didn't, he would have no other choice but to declare she is not allowed to receive Communion." 21) Rage Against the Supreme Junta
Source: exile in happy valley
by Nicky Reid

"I was raised with the Consistent Life Ethic as espoused by Catholic Workers like the Berrigan Brothers that preached that all life was precious from the womb to the battlefield to death row .... However, with that being said, as a born-again voluntaryist who's as turned on by Samuel Konkin as I am by Dorothy Day, I also hold bodily autonomy to be equally sacred. ... I've come to see the right to choose as a sort of necessary evil for someone who struggles to be big enough to put individual liberty before my own personal ethics because autonomy is for everyone, not just the people you spend your weekends getting stoned with. If the government can fuck with a pregnant teenage white girl, then you better believe they can fuck with some genderqueer creature like me and judicial despots like Samuel Alito know it. 22) How the Sussmann trial revealed Hillary Clinton's role in the Alfa Bank scandal
Source: The Hill
by Jonathan Turley

"The trial of former Clinton campaign attorney Michael Sussmann crossed a critical threshold Friday when a key witness uttered the name 'Hillary Clinton' in conjunction with a plan to spread the false Alfa Bank Russian collusion claim before the 2016 presidential election. For Democrats and many in the media, Hillary Clinton has long held a Voldemort-like status as 'She who must not be named' in scandals. Yet, there was her former campaign manager, Robby Mook, telling a jury that Clinton personally approved a plan to spread the claim of covert communications between the Trump organization and the Russian bank. It was one of the most successful disinformation campaigns in American politics, and Mook implicated Clinton as green-lighting the gas-lighting of the electorate. ... It was Washington's worst-kept but least-acknowledged secret." (05/21/22)

23) Politics: The Real Meaning of the Word "Prompt"
Source: Garrison Center
by Thomas L Knapp

"I read a lot of news stories each and every day, and I'm always surprised at how often I see various events characterized as 'prompting' calls for action -- the same calls, for the same actions, from the same people who were making exactly the same calls for exactly the same actions long before the events in question. In context, use of the word 'prompt' COULD be correct in the theatrical sense: A cue for an actor to read well-memorized lines at the most opportune time. But in context .... the stories would have us believe that the 'prompted' politicians and activists weren't pushing for Policy X before Event Y, but are doing so now because of Event Y." (05/22/22)

24) The Doom Spiral of Pernicious Polarization
Source: The Atlantic
by Yascha Mounk

"Until a few decades ago, most Democrats did not hate Republicans, and most Republicans did not hate Democrats. Very few Americans thought the policies of the other side were a threat to the country or worried about their child marrying a spouse who belonged to a different political party. All of that has changed. A 2016 survey found that 60 percent of Democrats and 63 percent of Republicans would now balk at their child's marrying a supporter of a different political party. ... To live in a country where political disagreements turn into personal vendettas is no fun, but a growing body of research reveals more systemic effects. Pernicious polarization makes good-faith efforts to tackle social problems such as public-health crises harder and bad-faith efforts to turn them into political gain easier." (05/21/22)

25) "Woke" Fed Fell Asleep on the Job
Source: American Institute for Economic Research
by Nicholas Curott & James McClure

"The Federal Reserve has become increasingly concerned with 'woke' issues like inequality and climate change. These concerns have distracted Fed officials from their core mission of price stability. The Fed's preferred measure of inflation hit 6.59 percent in March. The price level is now 4.6 percentage points higher than it would have been had the Fed hit its 2-percent target over the course of the pandemic. With inflation raging at the highest rate in 40 years, it is time to reexamine the Fed's legitimate responsibilities." (05/22/22)

"The Ukrainian government is quickly learning that it can say anything, literally anything at all, about what's happening on the ground there and get it uncritically reported as an actual news story by the mainstream western press. The latest story making the rounds is a completely unevidenced claim made by a Ukrainian government official that Russians are going around raping Ukrainian babies to death. Business Insider, The Daily Beast, The Daily Mail and Yahoo News have all run this story despite no actual evidence existing for it beyond the empty assertions of a government who would have every incentive to lie." 27) On the open texture of conflicts
Source: Notes On Liberty
by Federico Sosa Valle

"Just as language carries with it a phenomenon of open texture, according to which the reference and meaning of some of its terms are modified in response to changes in the environment -- for example, saying that the head of state is commander in chief of the armed forces implies different denotations and connotations as war machines, communications, and command styles evolve -- conflicts that are prolonged over time also undergo changes in the terms that define them, as their surrounding context varies. Thus, a dispute between individuals about the ownership of a certain asset, such as that of two heirs in dispute over the award of a property that is part of the hereditary heritage, will have to vary in intensity according to the changes in the market value of the said asset and according to the changes in the needs of those heirs as well." 28) Journalist's Tarnished Silver Spoons
Source: The Pamphleteer
by Davis Hunt

"In 1927, famed American journalist H.L. Mencken was already lamenting the death of journalism, pining for the time when a journalist made 'as much as a bartender or a police sergeant' instead of the present situation in which 'he makes as much as the average doctor or lawyer.' Today, of course, the industry has bloated even more. The modern journalist sits somewhere between a Hollywood celebrity and a public intellectual. A kind of purgatory that ensures they will never be as desirable as a Hollywood A-lister, nor as sought after for real input as a public intellectual. In this state of affliction, he can affect a certain amount of intelligence without tending to its less attractive realities that typically require much time and devotion outside of the public eye without direct feedback from bosses or viewers." Source: Jacobin
by Chip Gibbons

"As someone who was politicized by Bush's invasion of Iraq, and who spent time during the Bush years listening to the firsthand accounts of antiwar veterans about the brutality of the occupation, it is difficult to explain in words my deep, visceral reaction to this video. War is a crime. And Bush's invasion of Iraq was entirely unnecessary and unprovoked. It was an act of unmitigated aggression with a staggering human toll. And all of this death and destruction was a choice by the Bush administration. To see Bush hypocritically condemning others for carrying out the same crimes is bad enough. But to see him in the process accidentally invoke his own war crimes, make a joke about it, and then have the audience laugh along with him is a loathsome spectacle." (05/21/22)

30) A New Path for Post-COVID Policy
Source: EconLog
by Jayat Joshi

"The framework of public policy and public discourse are trapped in a technocratic state of mind. In the post-covid world, not just public policy, but its entire framework needs to be reimagined to make it more participatory. This year, as we come out of a phase of assembly elections in India, the worst of Covid-19 may finally be behind us. At this stage, it is important to take a long, hard look at the norms embedded in our governance and do so with a sense of urgency as we transition into an uncertain and changing global order." 31) Katie Porter Versus ... Lanny Davis?
Source: The American Prospect
by David Dayen

"In a remarkable press conference on Thursday, Bill Clinton's former lawyer Lanny Davis demanded that the House Natural Resources Committee hold a public hearing featuring him, so he could rebut the committee's criminal referral of his client to the Justice Department on a bribery charge. Davis called the referral, made by House Natural Resources Committee chair Rep. Raúl Grijalva and oversight subcommittee chair Rep. Katie Porter (D-CA), 'false and misleading.' Davis's client, Arizona developer Mike Ingram, was accused by the committee of donating or helping to bundle $241,600 in donations to Trump's campaign in 2017, just weeks before obtaining a federal environmental permit for a 28,000-unit housing and commercial development in the city of Benson, Arizona. Prior to the donations, Ingram had emailed the personal account of Trump's then-Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke, and had breakfast with his top deputy David Bernhardt, who would later become Interior Secretary himself." 33) Democrats weaponize government when they don't get their way
Source: Fox News Forum
by Colin Reed

"The sight of protesters invading the private homes of Supreme Court justices should alarm Americans across the ideological spectrum. So should the Biden administration's collective shrug of the shoulders, despite the mobs violating a federal law criminalizing attempts to 'influence' federal officials on the outcome of a court case. Sadly, the tactics are not all that surprising, given the left's [sic] pattern of weaponizing the federal government against their political opponents. After all, who can forget last year's mysterious leak to ProPublica disclosing the private financial information of some of the nation's top earners? U.S. Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Sheldon Whitehouse seized on the opportunity by issuing a red-faced letter demanding an investigation into the 'tax avoidance schemes' of the 'nation's wealthiest individuals.'" 34) Taking it up an escalatory notch: US mulls sending anti-ship missiles to Zelensky
Source: Responsible Statecraft
by Kelley Beaucar Vlahos

"It would be really difficult to believe that the United States is not in a proxy war with Russia if reports that it plans to send anti-ship missiles to Ukraine are true. In fact, the State Department did not exactly deny this exclusive report from Reuters that Washington was readying to share the weapons capability to help 'defeat Russia's naval blockade ... amid concerns more powerful weapons that could sink Russian warships would intensify the conflict.' ... The only thing that is being directly denied are assertions by the Ukrainian Ministry of Internal Affairs adviser, who tweeted Friday that 'the US is preparing a plan to destroy the [Russian] Black Sea Fleet.'" 35) Domestic Violence Is Not the Result of Patriarchy
Source: Quillette
by Limor Gottlieb

"As you may know, Johnny Depp is suing his ex-wife Amber Heard over an op-ed she wrote in the Washington Post in 2018, in which she claimed to be a victim of domestic abuse. The legal battle has come to the courts of Virginia, US, and the hearings are broadcast live. The defamation trial features painful accusations of domestic abuse in which Depp has several audio recordings of Heard admitting to hitting him and threatening him .... As a doctoral psychology and relationship researcher, currently writing my dissertation on the topic of intimate partner violence, I've been following this case with close attention and deep frustration at the double standard with which society addresses the topic of domestic abuse." 36) What We Don't Talk About When We Talk About Pregnancy: It's Often Hell
Source: In These Times
by Miriam Markowitz

"Most of the childless women I know my age did not decide deliberately not to have babies. We found that the decision, like so many others, was made for us: by society, by economics, by time, and by the one factor society refuses to understand as the crucial determinant of motherhood: our own bodies. In this era, when women are supposedly freer than ever, my peers and I have found the opposite. Our options have diminished without our even knowing it. Now, with the imminent overturn of Roe v. Wade, we find that they have grown even fewer. Childcare has become prohibitively expensive, especially for single mothers. Women are increasingly delaying and then abandoning their plans to have children as life becomes more financially precarious." (05/19/22)

37) Washington's Tolerance of Death Squad "Democracies"
Source: Antiwar.com
by Ted Galen Carpenter

"The U.S. government has had a long, dishonorable history of forging and sustaining close relations with murderous dictatorships -- as long as they supported Washington's foreign policy. Such authoritarian US allies as the Shah of Iran, Nicaragua's Anastasio Somoza, Egypt's Hosni Mubarak, the Saudi royal family, and a succession of South Korean and Guatemalan military rulers (among others) were confirmation of that cynical approach throughout the Cold War. US administrations (especially Ronald Reagan's administration) also looked the other way or even offered quiet support as the dictatorships in Chile and Argentina executed brutal, indiscriminate crackdowns. Matters have not improved all that much since the end of the Cold War." (05/21/22)

38) You Are a Soul
Source: Independent Institute
by Daniel B Klein

"The ontology of the human being is elusive. But let's say: You are a soul and you own your person. The soul and the person together constitute the human being. It is also apt, of course, to say you are a human being. But here, I use 'you' to address just you, the soul, as a way to jolt us into a way of thinking. Souls and persons are one-to-one, so it is natural that 'human being' be signified as either 'soul' or 'person,' each serving, according to my formulation, as a synecdoche for the human being. Where does the person end and the soul begin? I don't know." (05/20/22)

39) These Nine Republicans Hate Democrats More Than They Love Babies (or Freedom or Democracy or Anything Else)
Source: The Daily Beast
by Matt Lewis

"A veritable murderers' row of nine MAGA members voted on Wednesday against The Access to Baby Formula Act. ... Who would oppose such a thing? The usual suspects, that's who. Reps. Andy Biggs, Lauren Boebert, Matt Gaetz, Louie Gohmert, Paul Gosar, Marjorie Taylor Greene, Clay Higgins, Thomas Massie, and Chip Roy. Under normal conditions, voting against such a bill would be controversial enough. It reinforces the negative stereotype of conservatives being pro-life only in the womb and not caring about babies after they are born. It plays into the hands of abortion supporters arguing that access to abortion is important for poor or struggling moms who can't afford another mouth to feed. Coming on the heels of the leak about the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade (but before the decision has officially been handed down), this seems like an obvious trap that pro-lifers might want to avoid. Not for the MAGA Nine." (05/20/22)

41) Cotton picks fight with legacies of Washington and John Q. Adams
Source: Responsible Statecraft
by Daniel Larison

"Foreign policy hardliners have always been threatened by the wisdom of the earliest generations of American leaders, because the warnings of Washington, Jefferson, and John Quincy Adams against foreign entanglements and involvement in distant conflicts are an indictment of the globetrotting militarism that hardliners have championed for decades. When confronted with the foreign policy vision of the early presidents, Republican hardliners in particular try to deny the substance of what these presidents said and did and hope to co-opt them for their own cause. Sen. Tom Cotton is one of the foremost hardliners in Congress, and he has made a point of trying to claim several early presidents for a foreign policy faction with which those leaders have little or nothing in common." 42) True Liberals Are Not Conservatives
Source: Free Association
by Sheldon Richman

"The relevance of F. A. Hayek's essay 'Why I Am Not a Conservative,' the postscript to his important 1960 book, The Constitution of Liberty, is demonstrated at once by the opening quote from Lord Acton: 'At all times sincere friends of freedom have been rare, and its triumphs have been due to minorities, that have prevailed by associating themselves with auxiliaries whose objects often differed from their own; and this association, which is always dangerous, has sometimes been disastrous, by giving to opponents just grounds of opposition.' [Emphasis added.] Who among true liberal advocates of individual liberty and free social evolution -- aka libertarians -- would deny the truth of that observation?" (05/20/22)

43) Quota Requirement Overturned

by Paul Jacob

"In 2018, Jerry Brown, then California governor, signed a bill requiring corporate boards to include a high percentage of women. Now a Los Angeles County Superior Court judge has determined that the state failed to show that 'gender-based classification was necessary to boost California's economy, improve opportunities for women in the workplace, and protect California taxpayers, public employees, pensions and retirees.' ... it is neither immoral nor a crime to choose a man instead of a woman for a post. Making specific hires criminal depending upon the complexion of a business's other hires amounts to the politicization of everything, swapping the goals of business for the goals of ideologues." 44) A Historic Turning Point: Goodbye Russian Gas, Hello Rapid Decarbonization
Source: Common Dreams
by Simon Pirani

"Three months into the Kremlin's war against Ukraine, European politicians and officials are working out plans to reduce fossil fuel imports from Russia to zero. This week, the European Commission published a plan to end Russian gas imports by 2027. Climate campaign groups say it can be done much sooner. This is a historic turning point. Gas imports from Russia started in the 1960s and came to symbolise not only a flourishing trading relationship with Europe, but also a geopolitical partnership that survived the break-up of the Soviet Union in 1991. How strong is the case for Europe's labour movement and civil society to support sanctions against the Russian economy, and specifically against Russian fossil fuels? Which sanctions could be effective? And could an embargo on Russian oil and gas imports give a push to decarbonisation and the fight to prevent dangerous global warming?" (05/22/22)

45) The Traffic Death "Crisis" Isn't What Bureaucrats Claim
Source: Reason
by JD Tuccille

"To the limited extent that there was an upside during the early days of the pandemic, empty roads and reduced enforcement of petty traffic laws made what driving was still to be done relatively stress-free. But now that life has returned to something closer to what passes for normal these days, cars are back on the roads and traffic fatalities are rising. That has the usual suspects screaming that we're in a 'crisis' that necessitates government action. But they overstate the case and, if there is a problem, it was caused by the politicians and bureaucrats who present themselves as our saviors." (05/20/22)

"Out of the goodness of his heart, President Biden has just lengthened our leashes when it comes to Cuba. Isn't that just so nice? Isn't it great to live under a nice, benevolent democratically elected dictator rather than a cruel and brutal one? Biden is issuing executive decrees permitting more U.S. flights into Cuba, removing caps on money Americans can send to Cubans, and restoring travel by educational groups. Whoop de doo! Let's all go out and celebrate Biden's kindness and generosity. After all, rightwing President Trump certainly wasn't that nice when it came to Cuba! Let's get something clear: Freedom is the natural, God-given right to travel wherever you want, trade with whomever you want, and spend your money any way you. Freedom is not a longer leash." 47) Sweden's Strategy Once Again Proven Correct
Source: Brownstone Institute
by Ian Miller

"Throughout the pandemic, Sweden has faced an enormous amount of criticism and international pressure due to their willingness to stick to established public health principles and pre-pandemic planning. Instead of following the incessant, anti-science groupthink that became part of a virus-induced political religion, Sweden chose instead to not impose the strict lockdowns that Dr. Fauci recently claimed were not tried in the US. ... Even last year it became readily apparent that no one in the media or public health establishment was willing to discuss the inarguable reality that Sweden's results were no worse than many countries across the globe -- and significantly better than many, many others. In general, comparisons have been mainly focused on COVID specific outcomes, but now the World Health Organization, fresh off demanding authoritarian powers over sovereign nations whenever they deem necessary, has released a new report on their estimates of excess mortality." Now, U.S. President Joe Biden is finally rolling back some -- but not all -- of Trump's sanctions on Cuba, which were applied on top of a now-60-year U.S. economic embargo on the country. ... 50) Many Workers May Never Return to the Office, and That's a Good Thing
Source: American Institute for Economic Research
by Eli Lehrer

"The spring of 2022 has seen large parts of American life return to their pre-pandemic normal. Travel? Daily air travel sits at about 90 percent of its pre-pandemic levels. Sports? The 2021 NFL's season saw higher total attendance than in 2019. Work? The unemployment rate (3.6 percent) is very much in the same ballpark as the number (3.5. percent) recorded in the last pre-lockdown month of February 2019. One thing, however, has not returned to 'normal:' White-collar workers' attendance at the office. This is a good thing. Work from home is better for almost everyone in the long run and a return to it, rather than being a disruption, would actually represent a return to historical norms." (05/20/22)
