1) Trump envoys fail to secure Ukraine peace deal after Putin tells Europe he’s ready for war
Source: Independent [UK]
“Vladimir Putin rejected a peace deal to end the war in Ukraine after five hours of talks with US representatives on Tuesday. The Kremlin said the discussions with US special envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, were ‘constructive and meaningful,’ but ‘we are no closer to resolving the crisis in Ukraine.’ … Ahead of the talks involving Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff and son-in-law Jared Kushner, Putin told an investment forum that a new 20-point peace plan agreed by Ukraine and the US was unacceptable to Moscow. He accused Europe of wanting to sabotage the talks, adding that if Europe ‘wants to go to war and starts one, we are ready right now.'” (12/03/25)

2) Hegseth whines “fog of war” on Caribbean boat murders, throws admiral under the bus
Source: SFGate
“Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth on Tuesday defended the secondary strike on an alleged drug boat in the Caribbean Sea, citing ‘the fog of war’ as reason for his not seeing any survivors in the water when the strike was ordered and launched. Hegseth’s comments came during a cabinet meeting hosted by President Donald Trump the day after the administration insisted the strike, which it says was ordered by Navy Vice Adm. Frank ‘Mitch’ Bradley, was lawful. Legal experts say the U.S. military would have committed a crime if survivors were killed, and lawmakers have announced congressional reviews of the strikes. Bradley is expected to provide a classified briefing Thursday to lawmakers overseeing the military.” (12/02/25)

3) TN: Republican Matt Van Epps wins US House special election
Source: The Guardian [UK]
“Republican Matt Van Epps defeated Democrat Aftyn Behn in a congressional special election in the western Nashville suburbs, which was being closely watched for signs of Republican weakness going into congressional midterms next year. The Associated Press called the race at 9.47 EST with Van Epps holding a 52% to 46% lead. … Donald Trump carried the district by 15 points in 2020 and 22 points in 2024. But special elections can be unpredictable, and polling placed Behn within a few points of Van Epps in recent days.” (12/02/25)

4) Costco joins companies suing for refunds if SCOTUS rejects Trump’s illegal tariffs
Source: San Diego Union-Tribune
“Costco Wholesale Corp. joined a fast-growing list of businesses suing the Trump administration to ensure eligibility for refunds if the U.S. Supreme Court strikes down the president’s signature [and illegal] global tariffs policy. The nation’s biggest warehouse club chain is among dozens of companies to file lawsuits in a U.S. trade court since late October challenging President Donald Trump’s use of an economic emergency powers law to impose the levies, according to court records. It’s one of the biggest corporate players to jump into a fight largely driven this year by small businesses and Democratic state officials. The Supreme Court heard arguments on Trump’s tariffs on Nov. 5. The justices put the fight on a fast-tracked schedule but didn’t say when they intend to rule. In the meantime, businesses of all sizes have brought cases pressing similar legal claims with the goal of avoiding uncertainty about their eligibility for refunds if the court rules against Trump.” (12/02/25)

5) Honduras: Centrist Nasralla takes slim lead in presidential election plagued by delays as Trump alleges fraud
Source: Reuters
“Salvador Nasralla, of the centrist Liberal Party, took a razor-thin lead in Honduras'[s] presidential election over Nasry Asfura, the conservative candidate backed by U.S. President Donald Trump, on Tuesday in a vote count plagued by delays and system failures. The latest results released by the electoral authority around 2:30 p.m. local time showed Nasralla on 39.96% and Asfura of the National Party on 39.80%, with just over 60% of votes counted. Rixi Moncada, of the ruling leftist LIBRE Party, was well behind in third place with 19.19%. Asfura had previously been leading by around 500 votes when results were last released on Monday.” (12/02/25)

6) UK: Regime plans to scrap some jury trials
Source: ABC News
“The right to trial by jury will be pared back in Britain in an attempt to clear a backlog of cases clogging up the justice system, the government announced Tuesday. Justice Secretary David Lammy said overload and delays had created ‘an emergency in our courts’ that risks collapsing trust in British justice. The U.K. court system has struggled to clear a backlog of cases built up since the COVID-19 pandemic. The government says there are almost 80,000 cases waiting to be heard in criminal courts in England and Wales, more than double the pre-pandemic figure, with some cases taking several years to reach trial.” [editor’s note: Yeah, “no jury trial for you, a government official will decide” just SCREAMS “trust British justice” – TLK] (12/02/25)

7) WI: Mandela Barnes jumps into crowded race for governor
Source: Politico
“Former Wisconsin Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes launched his bid to replace retiring Gov. Tony Evers on Tuesday, joining an already crowded and competitive Democratic primary. Barnes, who lost a 2022 Senate race against Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), focused on affordability and attacked Republicans in his launch video …. Barnes’[s] entrance is not expected to clear the primary field, like it did in his 2022 Senate primary, several Wisconsin Democrats said. A half-dozen Democrats are already vying to replace Evers, including Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley, Lt. Gov. Sara Rodriguez, state Rep. Francesca Hong, state Sen. Kelda Roys and attorney Missy Hughes. Evers over the summer announced he wouldn’t run for a third term.” (12/02/25)

Source: Reuters
“Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) said on Monday that it seized full control of Babanusa, a transport junction in the country’s oil-producing South. In a statement, the RSF said its “liberation” of Babanusa in West Kordofan state — the latest frontline in the war in Sudan — came as it repelled ‘a surprise attack’ by the Sudanese army in what it called ‘a clear violation of the humanitarian truce.'” (12/02/25)

Source: United Press International
“A former Memphis, Tenn., police officer who pleaded guilty to kidnapping and murdering a 30-year-old man while on duty has been sentenced to 38 years in prison. Patric Ferguson, 34, was sentenced Monday after pleading guilty in August to federal civil rights, firearms, kidnapping and obstruction charges for the fatal shooting of Robert Howard. … Prosecutors said Ferguson, who had been a police officer since October 2018, abducted Howard from his home at gunpoint and killed him in the back of his patrol car while on duty. He then disposed of the body in the Wolf River, with assistance from Joshua Rogers, who pleaded guilty May 8 to obstruction charges and is scheduled to be sentenced on Dec. 17.” (12/02/25)

10) Haiti: Transitional regime adopts key law to hold a general election for first time since 2016
Source: The Hill
“Haiti’s transitional presidential council has backed an electoral law in the latest step toward holding a general election for the first time in nearly a decade. The approval late Monday means that the government can finally publish an official and long-awaited electoral calendar, after fears that the council would try to push back the tentative dates to stay in power longer. … The adoption of the electoral law came as some council members have pushed for the ouster of Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé, including Fritz Alphonse Jean, who was recently sanctioned by the U.S. government. Some believe that U.S. visa restrictions, like the one imposed on Jean, are being used as a threat to try and influence Haiti’s politics. Three of seven council members with voting powers weren’t present for Monday’s meeting, where the electoral law was approved, including Jean, according to Le Nouvelliste newspaper.” (12/02/25)

Israel has not allowed international journalists into the blockaded Palestinian territory since the start of the war in October 2023 against Palestinian militant group Hamas, except when embedded with Israeli forces. … It is the latest of several such complaints linked to the Gaza war in France, where the authorities have jurisdiction in the case of an alleged breach of rights or crime against a French citizen.” (12/02/25)

“Bulgaria’s government said Tuesday it is withdrawing a controversial budget proposal after protests against it drew tens of thousands of people and saw clashes between police and protesters. Opposition and business groups have warned that plans for higher taxes, increased social security contributions and spending increases could hurt investment and expand the shadow economy as the country prepares to join the eurozone at the start of next year. The government first promised to withdraw the draft for thorough revision after protests last week, but later refused to do so, sparking protests in the capital, Sofia, and other major cities Monday night. The updated ID has been required since May, but passengers without it have so far been allowed to clear security with additional screening and a warning. “NBA legend Michael Jordan is suing Nascar, the biggest US motorsports company, accusing it of operating an illegal monopoly that has caused financial harm to a team he partly owns. On Monday, he sat in the front row of the courtroom for the first day of the lawsuit’s trial, listening to emotional testimony from Denny Hamlin, the three-time champion in the Daytona 500 and a co-owner of Jordan’s team, 23XI racing. Jordan and Hamlin, along with Front Row Motorsports, are accusing Nascar of illegally making hundreds of millions of dollars by stifling opportunity. Nascar CEO Jim France, who inherited the stock car racing business from his father, Nascar’s founder, denies any wrongdoing. Jordan’s 23XI and Front Row Motorsports, which is led by fast food franchise owner Bob Jenkins, brought the lawsuit in October 2024. 21) No Virtue in “Cyberselfish”-ness
Source: Garrison Center
by Joel Schlosberg
“For all their reliance on corporate welfare, according to [Paulina] Borsook, ‘technolibertarians typically can’t be bothered to engage in conventional political maneuvers.’ The 2001 paperback edition [of Cyberselfish] envisioned such an ideology dominating the computer industry ‘long after high tech has retreated to being just one industrial sector among many.’ If the year 2025’s nationalist, protectionist industrial policy differs markedly from the road ahead suggested in Cyberselfish, perhaps it wasn’t all that perceptive about the twentieth century. Crediting heavy state funding with virtually all economic progress and social stability, and conflating the government with social cooperation, it’s hundreds of pages with all the depth of the bumper sticker proclaiming ‘IF YOU HATE SOCIALISM GET OFF MY PUBLIC ROAD.'” (12/02/25)

22) This moral slum of an administration should nauseate Americans
Source: Washington Post
by George F Will
“Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth seems to be a war criminal. Without a war. An interesting achievement. In 1967, novelist Gwyn Griffin published a World War II novel, ‘An Operational Necessity,’ that 58 years later is again pertinent. According to the laws of war, survivors of a sunk ship cannot be attacked. But a German submarine captain, after sinking a French ship, orders the machine-gunning of the ship’s crew, lest their survival endanger his men by revealing where his boat is operating. In the book’s dramatic climax, a postwar tribunal examines the German commander’s moral calculus. No operational necessity justified Hegseth’s de facto order to kill two survivors clinging to the wreckage of one of the supposed drug boats obliterated by U.S. forces near Venezuela. … The killing of the survivors by this moral slum of an administration should nauseate Americans. A nation incapable of shame is dangerous, not least to itself.” (12/02/25)

23) The Catholic Bishops Undermine Their Own Case on Immigrants
Source: Future of Freedom Foundation
by Jacob G Hornberger
“Last month, the United States Conference of Bishops issued a remarkable ‘Special Message’ condemning the grave mistreatment of immigrants at the hands of the U.S. government. According to the conference’s Office of Public Affairs, ‘It marked the first time in twelve years the USCCB invoked this particularly urgent way of speaking as a body of bishops.’ To their everlasting credit, the bishops made it clear that there is no way to reconcile what the U.S. government is doing to immigrants with God’s laws. … But the bishops and the mainstream-press commentators are wrong. There is no ‘comprehensive immigration reform’ that can ever make America’s immigration-control system work in a gentile, kind, benevolent, and Christian-like manner. The mistreatment and abuse of immigrants that the Catholic bishops condemn is an inherent part of the immigration-control system that exists to ‘secure the border.’ They are inseparable.” (12/02/25)

“Ten years ago, Pakistani-born terrorist Tashfeen Malik and her U.S.-born husband Syed Farook murdered 14 people in an Islamist terrorist attack in San Bernardino, California. It was the deadliest foreign-born terrorist attack on U.S. soil since 9/11 and inspired then-candidate Donald J. Trump to call for ‘a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country’s representatives can figure out what is going on.’ We figured it out a long time ago: Very little was going on. Donald Trump won the 2016 election with a victory almost unimaginable without the threat of terrorism that he and his supporters inflated at every opportunity. 26) If Young People Want More Affordability, They Should Get Jobs
Source: Town Hall
by Stephen Moore
“Polls show that the age group of Americans most worried about ‘affordability’ are the 20- and 30-somethings. That’s young millennials and Gen Z. Why are they so financially stressed out? One reason things seem so unaffordable to young people is that too many aren’t working hard — they are hardly working. The latest Labor Department data indicate that fewer and fewer males between the ages of 16 and 24 are in the labor force. It used to be that more than 70% had a job; now, less than 60% do. Labor force participation for men, even into their 30s, is at or near an all-time low. Men without jobs are a prescription for social chaos. I would argue this is the MOST important age for a man to be hard at work, honing his job skills and on the way to a career that makes him a suitable marriage partner.” (12/02/25)

“The pandemic saw a new breed of people who had become experts overnight but knew very little about the issues. They constantly appeared on TV with sinister messages about the need for lockdowns and many other interventions …. State epidemiologist Anders Tegnell stood his ground and advised that Sweden should not change its policy, which was to keep the society open and not mandate face masks, which were rarely seen in Sweden. Sweden was a lone star in the darkness. I think it was the only country that didn’t panic and did the right things, and it had the lowest excess mortality in the whole Western world during the pandemic (excess mortality is the increase in all-cause mortality during the pandemic compared with prepandemic levels).” (12/02/25)

“Two generations before Charlie Kirk there was Leonard Read. He too travelled the country debating with students and telling them how to build a good society. The essence of Read’s philosophy comprises individual liberty, the free market, private property, and government limited to securing these rights equally for all. Everyone is free to do as they please provided they do not infringe on the equal right and opportunity of everyone else to do so too. Everyone can pursue their ambitions; associate with whomever they please; worship God in their own way; choose their own job or profession; run a business; and keep their honestly acquired property and savings or dispose of it as they wish. The society prospers because it uses the creative talents and resources of all its citizens, not just an elite few.” (12/02/25)

29) A Thermonuclear Hair Trigger: Spending More Money on New Nukes Is a Moral Obscenity
Source: TomDispatch
by William Astore
“It’s been 20 years since I retired from the Air Force and 40 years since I first entered Cheyenne Mountain, America’s nuclear redoubt at the southern end of the Front Range that includes Pikes Peak in Colorado. So it was with some nostalgia that I read a recent memo from General Kenneth Wilsbach, the new Chief of Staff of the Air Force (CSAF). Along with the usual warrior talk, the CSAF vowed to ‘relentlessly advocate’ for the new Sentinel ICBM (intercontinental ballistic missile) and the B-21 Raider stealth bomber. While the Air Force often speaks of ‘investing’ in new nukes, this time the CSAF opted for ‘recapitalization,’ a remarkably bloodless term for the creation of a whole new generation of genocidal thermonuclear weapons and their delivery systems. … In my Cheyenne Mountain days, circa 1985, the new ‘must have’ bomber was the B-1 Lancer and the new ‘must have’ ICBM was the MX Peacekeeper.” (12/02/25)

30) Getting a Gun Permit in LA County Shouldn’t Be Rarer Than a Nolan Ryan No-Hitter
Source: Cato Institute
by Matthew Cavedon
“Ryan was celestial on the mound. He won 324 games – seven of them no-hitters. (Four of those were with the Angels.) That means opponents did not get a hit in two out of every hundred games he won. No wonder he ascended into baseball heaven, inducted into the Hall of Fame with the third-highest vote percentage ever. Unbelievably, Angelenos who try to get permission to exercise their Second Amendment rights face even longer odds than did Ryan in getting a no-hit win. As a lawsuit by the federal government details, just one in 2,000 concealed-carry permit applicants wins the legally required seal of approval from the LA County Sheriff’s Department.” (12/02/25)

31) Massive Minnesota welfare heist proves Democrats can’t police their own mess
Source: Fox News
by Liz Peek
“The massive Somali-orchestrated welfare fraud in Minnesota grew so big, even The New York Times had to cover it. The takeaways are delicious: an indictment of sloppy Democrat-run Big Government, a repudiation of immigration policies that favor groups that decline to assimilate and that in some cases embrace anti-U.S. sentiment and exposing Governor Tim Walz for the lightweight he is. Over several years, a cabal of (mostly) Somali refugees in Minnesota pulled off a giant heist of the state’s funds, embarrassing Democrat officials and highlighting once again the fraud that permeates our welfare programs. It was a theft so mammoth that hundreds of employees of the Minnesota Department of Human Services wrote anonymously on X that Walz, who served as Vice President Kamala Harris'[s] running mate in 2024, ‘has failed Minnesota’ and added, ‘Tim Walz is 100% responsible for massive fraud in Minnesota.'” (12/02/25)

“Last week, the Washington Post reported that [US Secretary of Defense Pete] Hegseth gave a verbal order to leave no survivors in the first strike of the DOD’s campaign against drug smuggling boats, which took place in the Caribbean on September 2. Several minutes after striking the boat for the first time, the Special Operations commander overseeing the attack ordered a second strike to kill two men hanging on to the burning remains of the boat in order to comply with Hegseth’s order, according to the Post. … That Hegseth would give such an order that could potentially constitute a war crime should come as no surprise. Hegseth has a long history of expressing contempt for the Geneva Conventions and the legal rules of engagement.” (12/02/25)

33) When Obedience Becomes Complicity: From Mỹ Lai to Today’s Military Conscience
Source: Common Dreams
by George Cassidy Payne
“Courage is rarely convenient. Sometimes it is condemned. Ask Hugh Clowers Thompson Jr. On March 16, 1968, Thompson, a young Army helicopter pilot in the 123rd Aviation Battalion of the 23rd Infantry Division, flew over the South Vietnamese village of Sơn Mỹ and witnessed something unimaginable. American soldiers were systematically killing unarmed civilians — women, children, and the elderly. There were no enemy combatants. This was not war. This was a massacre. Most soldiers either did not see or refused to confront the truth. Thompson did. He acted decisively: He hovered his helicopter between the troops and the villagers; ordered his crew, Glenn Andreotta and Lawrence Colburn, to fire on American soldiers if the killing continued; and personally escorted terrified civilians to safety. He radioed repeated warnings to Task Force Barker headquarters. Eventually, his actions forced command to halt the massacre.” (12/02/25)

34) The Limits of Economic Foresight and the Oracle of Delphi: Why Models Warn, but Never Predict
Source: Cobden Centre
by Elias Sanchez
“In antiquity, kings, generals, and heroes journeyed to the Oracle of Delphi seeking guidance about the future. Their questions were strikingly similar to those posed by economists today: What will happen if I choose this path? Will victory come next season? Will prosperity return? The oracle, seated above fissures of intoxicating vapours, never gave precise forecasts. Her answers were elliptical, conditional, and interpretive. ‘If Croesus goes to war with Persia, he will destroy a mighty empire,’ she told Croesus — but she did not specify whose. The message was merely a signal, not an itinerary blueprint. In this sense, the Delphic pilgrimage mirrors contemporary economics.” (12/02/25)

35) Why dire pronouncements about food affordability are overcooked
Source: Washington Post
by Marian L Tupy and Gale L Pooley
“U.S. consumers spent about 17 percent of disposable personal income on food in 1960; by 2019, that share had fallen to 9.5 percent, driven largely by more affordable food at home. Even after the inflation spike in recent years, Americans last year devoted 10.4 percent of disposable income to food, still roughly half the share common in the mid-20th century and lower than in most other countries. That is a textbook case of Engel’s law: As incomes rise, the share of income spent on food declines.
What produced these gains is not mysterious.” (12/02/25)

36) Burned by Bureaucracy: Why Other Countries Have Better Sunscreen
Source: The Daily Economy
by Laura Williams
“The most common cancer in America is also one of the most preventable — if people simply had access to effective sunscreen. We spend $9 billion a year treating the cancerous effects of sun damage, not to mention the billions we spend to soothe the sun’s more minor effects. So many people get skin cancer that the statistics aren’t even reportable to cancer registries. But nearly all skin cancer is the result of sunlight and UV exposure, which means it is preventable. But that’s the (often greasy) rub: in the United States, sunscreen is locked inside a bureaucratic vault built in 1938, guarded by the Food and Drug Administration as if it were an experimental medical treatment.” (12/02/25)

37) Those Unhappy With Ukrainian Peace Deal Have Russia Hoaxers To Blame
Source: The Federalist
by Hans Mahncke
“The proposed Ukraine peace deal has shaken the political class that insisted escalation with Moscow was the only acceptable course. How, they ask, can Russia possibly walk away with concessions? Part of this is simply material: Russia has ground out battlefield gains and retains the manpower and resources to sustain the war indefinitely. But that is only one dimension of it. The fuller answer reaches back long before the first tanks crossed the border. It began a decade earlier, when a small clique of Washington insiders decided Russia would be the villain in every story and Ukraine the instrument to make it so. From the 2014 Kiev coup to the Russia-collusion hoax to the Ukraine impeachment fiasco, the same actors built a narrative architecture that rewired the entire geopolitical landscape and made war not just possible but almost inevitable.” (12/02/25)

38) Republican Socialism: Trump Is Taking Federal Stakes in Private Companies
Source: Reason
by Eric Boehm
“One danger of nationalism, Friedrich Hayek warned in 1960, was the ‘bridge’ it provides ‘from conservatism to collectivism.’ ‘To think in terms of ‘our’ industry or resource,’ he wrote, ‘is only a short step away from demanding that these national assets be directed in the national interest.’ That’s a short step that President Donald Trump has eagerly taken. In the first nine months of his second term in office, the president has overseen a giant government leap into the boardrooms of strategically important businesses. … Trump would not be the first leader to believe that greater state control of key industries and economic sectors would translate into better growth and stronger security. But from Soviet Russia to modern China, the best parallels come from authoritarian regimes rather than American presidencies.” (for publication 01/26)

39) Barriers to Affordable Housing
Source: EconLog
by Tyler Watts & Joel Watts
“The economics of housing affordability is very straightforward. If prices have gone up, either demand has shifted right, supply has shifted left, or some combination of the two. While supply constraints are the major culprit in the affordability problem, we want to acknowledge that buyers are partly responsible for the market shifts that we’ve seen — it takes two to tango. Housing is a normal good with a long-run income elasticity of demand close to one, meaning housing demand rises in tandem with household income growth. To bring prices down, we need builders to shift the housing supply curve ‘out and right’ by a larger factor than buyers are shifting the demand curve.” (12/02/25)

Luckily for the consulate, a new organization called Act For Israel, led by Israeli-American actor Noa Tishby, was prepared to swing into action. … The previously unreported campaign appears to have violated the Foreign Agents Registration Act, which mandates that American citizens and organizations publicly disclose any work that seeks to influence American politics on behalf of a foreign power.” (12/02/25)

41) “War Department” Mission: Saving Secretary Hegseth
Source: The American Prospect

“Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s scramble to avoid responsibility for his order to kill everyone on a boat allegedly transporting drugs, including two survivors treading water and clinging to flotsam after their boat had been blown up in mid-Caribbean, is a violation of law and a moral disgrace, but not without precedent. When things go visibly awry in our nation’s military actions (the key word in that clause is, of course, ‘visibly’), we have a long tradition of laying the blame on the underling. According to The Washington Post, Hegseth specifically ordered the operation’s commander, Adm. Frank Bradley, to have his sailors gun down those two survivors. According to The New York Times, Hegseth gave no such order, but he did issue the initial order to kill the people on that boat, which followed from President Trump’s order to the military to view such boats as enemy warships.” (12/02/25)

by Joseph Solis-Mullen
“Among the many figures who contributed to the growth and refinement of classical liberalism in Europe, few are more deserving of renewed attention than Charles Forbes René de Montalembert (1810–1870). A French Catholic nobleman, publicist, parliamentarian, and intellectual, Montalembert stood at the center of the 19th century struggle to reconcile Catholicism with political liberty at a time when both reactionary monarchists and militant secularists claimed exclusive ownership of France’s future. His life and writings offer a vision of liberty that is moral, pluralistic, and resistant to the centralizing ambitions of the modern state — precisely the kind of vision Ralph Raico argued must remain at the heart of any authentic liberal tradition.” (12/01/25)

45) Ungrateful Ilhan Omar & the Somali scammers: The immigrants we DON’T want

“Is it too much to ask for immigrants who love America and its system of government? That’s a question that President Trump has been asking, with an especially high level of vitriol, in the wake of the horrific shooting of members of the National Guard in Washington, DC, the day before Thanksgiving. In a corker of a Truth Social post announcing ‘a permanent pause’ in immigration from Third World countries, Trump went after Minneapolis-area Rep. Ilhan Omar, and for good reason. Omar stands for everything we shouldn’t want an immigrant to be — ungrateful, hostile to the American system as such, and perhaps not above perpetrating immigration fraud. Maybe the next time that Omar is a refugee from a war-torn, desperately poor African country looking for a safe haven in the West, she should try Canada or Australia.” (12/02/25)

by Jared Walczak
“Americans have been paying property taxes since the colonial era — and complaining about them for just as long. It’s about as American as you can get. (The paying and the complaining.) These days, the complaints are getting louder, with calls for abolition. The objections are understandable: far too often, local government officials have failed to reduce rates as assessed values have skyrocketed, yielding large unlegislated tax increases. Reforms are warranted. But repeal? It may be asking too much for most people to like property taxes, but all policy choices involve trade-offs, and for those who care about economic efficiency, neutrality, decentralization, and government accountability, the property tax deserves to be rated highly, if not in absolute terms, at least relative to the alternatives.” (12/01/25)

47) American-Led Regime Change Is Usually Disastrous
Source: Foreign Policy
by Ellen Knickmeyer
“The United States is the world leader in regime change, toppling 35 foreign heads over the past 120 years, by one reckoning. It’s a record built on a dangerous combination of unparalleled military might, a large group of perceived enemies — and a sunny self-confidence that has repeatedly proven mistaken. … Regime change and other strong-arm interventions rarely go as planned, but some of those that Trump is threatening, such as going ‘guns-a-blazing’ into Nigeria, with its armed extremists and ethnic and sectarian divides, seem like obvious disasters. But past failures should remind Americans of how catastrophic the consequences of hubris can be — both on an individual human scale and a national one.” (12/01/25)

48) How Will the US Government Pay the National Debt?
Source: Independent Institute
by Craig Eyermann
“Between August 8 and October 21, 2025, the U.S. government’s total public debt outstanding increased by more than $1 trillion, reaching a total of $38 trillion. One month later, the national debt had risen to $38.3 trillion. … Divided equally, that works out to be $284,125 for each of the country’s 134,800,000 households. That amount is about what the typical house for sale costs in Kentucky, which the government is borrowing to pay for the equivalent of over 47,500 such houses per day. If you’re like most American households, you probably can’t afford the cost of borrowing to own an extra home in Kentucky. In truth, neither can Uncle Sam. And yet, the national debt continues to grow as if the U.S. government can afford to buy a town’s worth of houses every day. Elected officials and bureaucrats need to do more to get the government’s fiscal house in order.” (12/01/25)

Source: In These Times

“We have a storytelling problem on the Left, and right now there is an easy story to parrot about the Democratic Party leadership’s profound failure to meet the moment. It’s an old and familiar story that has been written again and again throughout my life. It’s a story where the only updates are changes to names and dates. The MAGA Right has shown its inability to cohere its vision of American authoritarianism and win majorities to it. At the same time, Democratic leaders have shown their inability to lead a political coalition that can defeat the Right. There is no tactical maneuver that will change these fundamental truths. So we should be wary of easy stories that misdirect us, no matter how satisfying it might be to dunk on Chuck Schumer, no matter how crass the Democrats’ latest capitulations feel.” (12/02/25)

“Although Trump hated being on the road, the travel took him out of the Manhattan skyscraper emblazoned with his name in gold and into many struggling, disgruntled communities. … The people Trump met clued him in to the issues his supporters cared about …. But it has been many months since Trump hosted a full-on campaign-style rally. He has opted instead to travel abroad, golf at his private clubs, and dine with wealthy friends, business leaders, and major donors. Beyond the rallies, Trump has dramatically scaled back speeches, public events, and domestic travel compared with the first year of his initial term. And that lack of regular voter contact has contributed to a growing fear among Republicans and White House allies: that Trump is too isolated, and has become out of touch with what the public wants from its president.” (12/01/25)
