0)  We're Halfway to Our Year-End Fundraiser Goal. Let's Get This Done.

Yesterday, we reached the halfway mark in the march toward our year-end fundraiser goal of $5,150.

As of 6am Eastern time this morning, we're still there -- a "zero-dollar day" leaves us stuck at $1,287,50.

Yes, $1,287.50 IS halfway to $5,150, because we've got a generous "matching funds" offer from supporter GL. We raise $2,575 from the rest of you, he kicks in the other $2,575.

Please support the freedom movement's daily newspaper, in whatever amount represents your opinion of its usefulness to you, at:

https://news.rationalreview.com/support-rrnd

Words of wisdom from the late, lamented Judy Tenuta: "You can't get a body like mine in a bottle unless you PUSH REAL HARD."

She said that in a soft drink commercial in the late 1980s, right around the only time I met her (while doing some roadie work for a band that opened one of her performances) ... and, to my great pleasure, got grabbed and kissed by her.

It's PUSH REAL HARD time, folks. Nine months out of each year, we barely mention money. And once we reach our only annual fundraising goal, we pretty much shut up about it until nine months into the NEXT year.

It's October 27. We CAN reach the finish line by Halloween, but only with your help at:

Have a great day!

1)  Iran: Protests rage overnight after Mahsa Amini commemoration
Source: Jacaranda FM [South Africa]

"Protests raged through the night in Iran after thousands of mourners marked 40 days since the death of Mahsa Amini .... Despite heightened security measures, columns of mourners had poured into Saqez on Wednesday, paying tribute to Amini at her grave at the end of the traditional mourning period. ... 'Security forces have shot tear gas and opened fire on people in Zindan square, Saqez city,' the Hengaw rights group said, without specifying whether there were any dead or wounded. After nightfall, blasts were heard as security forces fired on protesters in Marivan, Kurdistan province, in a video published by Hengaw, a Norway-based organisation. 'Death to the dictator,' chanted protesters in the nearby city of Bukan where bonfires burned in the streets, the rights group said. Protesters also surrounded a base of the Basij militia in Sanandaj, a flashpoint city in Kurdistan province, starting fires and driving security forces back, it added." (1027/22)

2)  Second US railroad union votes down labor deal needed to avoid nationwide strike
Source: CNBC

"The Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen is the second union to vote down the tentative agreement between rail unions, freight rail companies and the Biden administration that was reached on September 15 and critical to avoiding a nationwide rail strike. The BRS, which represents over 10,000 rail workers and is one of the last three unions at the bargaining table, overwhelmingly rejected the deal, with 39.23% of members approving and 60.57% voting not to approve. ... The railroads have estimated that a rail strike could cost the economy $2 billion per day. ... All 12 unions that represent a total of 115,000 workers must ratify their contracts to prevent a potential shutdown of the national freight rail system. Six rail unions have voted to ratify the deal." (10/26/22)

3)  Ukraine war: Kremlin acknowledges new draftees ill-equipped for combat; regime practices "massive nuclear strike"
Source: USA Today

"The Kremlin acknowledged Wednesday what has been voiced repeatedly on news outlets and social media for weeks: A large number of Russia's new draftees have not being properly equipped for combat. ... Russian families have complained of having to buy battlefield gear for their drafted sons, brothers, etc., and of them being sent to war with scant training. Some have also reported lack of food and ammunition. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov recognized persistent problems with equipment, though he said 'vigorous measures taken to rectify the situation are already yielding the first positive results.' ... Russia's Strategic Deterrence Forces conducted a successful training exercise Wednesday aimed at delivering a 'massive nuclear strike' in response to a potential nuclear attack on the country, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said." 4)  Kagan blocks Capitol riot exploitation committee subpoena of Arizona GOP chair's phone records
Source: Politico

"Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan on Wednesday temporarily blocked the Jan. 6 select committee from accessing the phone records of Kelli Ward, the chair of the Arizona Republican Party. Kagan's two-page order stayed the subpoena 'pending further order of the undersigned or of the Court.' Similar requests in high-profile cases are almost always referred to the full court. Ward had urged the justices earlier Wednesday to temporarily block lower-court rulings that require T-Mobile to provide her phone records to the panel, which wants to examine her contacts in the weeks leading up to the attack on the Capitol. The panel sees Ward as an integral part of Donald Trump's effort to assemble false slates of electors and use them as part of a broader scheme to disrupt the transfer of presidential power to Joe Biden. Kagan gave the select panel until Friday at 5 p.m. to respond." (10/26/22)

5)  Germany: Regime announces plan to legalise recreational cannabis
Source: The Guardian [UK]

"Germany wants to make it legal for adults to purchase and own up to 30g of cannabis for recreational use and to privately grow up to three plants, the country's health minister has announced, saying the intended outcome could set a precedent for the rest of the European continent. ... The overriding goal of making it legal to buy and smoke cannabis in Germany, the Social Democrat politician [Karl Lauterbach] said, was to better protect young people, who were already consuming the drug in increasing numbers after obtaining it on the black market. ... In the hope of minimising the risk of a cannabis law being challenged by European courts at a later stage, Germany is planning to submit an outline of its plans to the European Commission this week and seek an opinion." 6)  FL: Judge rules DeSantis regime must turn over records relating to migrant flight stunt
Source: CNN

"Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis' administration did not comply with state public records laws and must turn over records relating to flights taking migrants from Texas to Martha's Vineyard, a judge ruled Tuesday. ... On Tuesday, Leon County Circuit Judge J. Lee Marsh said the governor's office did not show 'any steps, direct steps taken to gather what this court finds are public records' requested by the Florida Center for Government Accountability. The judge gave the administration 20 days to provide the records, the Miami Herald reported. ... The group filed a lawsuit October 10 seeking to compel release of the public records including text and phone logs, communication with the contractors who provided the flights as well as copies of any waivers the migrants signed." 7)  US mortgage rates rise to highest level since 2001
Source: The Hill

"U.S. mortgage rates rose for the 10th consecutive week, climbing above 7 percent last week to their highest level since 2001, according to data released Wednesday by the Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA). The MBA's weekly survey shows that the 30-year fixed mortgage rate rose to 7.16 percent, up from 6.94 percent a week earlier, while purchase applications dipped to their lowest level in seven years. ... Surging mortgage rates, fueled by aggressive interest rate hikes from the Federal Reserve to battle ongoing inflation, continue to dramatically cool the once red-hot housing market. U.S. home prices saw a record slowdown in August, falling by 2.6 percent, according to the S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller Index released Tuesday." (10/26/22)

8)  UK: Sunak makes Parliament debut as PM, axes more Truss policies
Source: Associated Press

"Rishi Sunak faced the opposition in Parliament for the first time as Britain's prime minister Wednesday, promising to restore economic stability after his predecessor's tax plans triggered market tumult. Sunak ripped up more of predecessor Liz Truss'[s] flagship policies, reinstating a moratorium on fracking for shale gas that Truss had lifted. Plans for large-scale deregulation of the economy, part of Truss'[s] vision to unleash economic growth, are also under review, Sunak's spokeswoman said. ... Opposition politicians focused on the baggage his new government carried: ministers from the Cabinets of Johnson -- who quit in July after a slew of ethics scandals -- and Truss, whose government lasted just seven weeks." 9)  Google agrees to compliance reforms to help US regime more easily spy on you
Source: Reuters

"The U.S. Justice Department said on Tuesday it had reached an agreement with Alphabet Inc's Google resolving a dispute with the search engine giant over the loss of data responsive to a 2016 search warrant. ... In 2016, the United States obtained a search warrant in California for data held at Google related to the investigation of the criminal cryptocurrency exchange BTC-e, the department said. Later the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit ruled search warrants issued under the Stored Communications Act (SCA) did not cover data stored outside of the United States. In 2018, Congress clarified the SCA did cover U.S. providers that chose to store data overseas but the government said 'in the intervening time, data responsive to the warrant was lost," the Justice Department said.'" 10) Canada: Central bank hikes rate again to 3.75%
Source: Canadian Broadcasting Corporation [Canadian state media]

"Canada's central bank continued its campaign to wrestle high inflation into submission on Wednesday, raising its benchmark interest rate by 50 basis points to 3.75 per cent. The Bank of Canada's rate -- officially known as the target for the overnight rate -- is the amount that retail banks are charged for short-term loans. But it filters down into the economy by influencing the rates that Canadians get from their own lenders on things like savings accounts and mortgages. After slashing its lending rate to near zero early in the pandemic, the bank has raised its benchmark rate six times since March, as it scrambles to rein in inflation, which has run up to its highest level in decades." 11) Iran: Gunmen attack major Shiite holy site, killing 15
Source: SFGate

"Gunmen attacked a major Shiite holy site in Iran on Wednesday, killing at least 15 people and wounding dozens. The attack came as protesters elsewhere in Iran marked a symbolic 40 days since a woman's death in custody ignited the biggest anti-government movement in over a decade. State TV blamed the attack on 'takfiris,' a term that refers to Sunni Muslim extremists who have targeted the country's Shiite majority in the past. The attack appeared to be unrelated to the demonstrations. The official website of the judiciary said two gunmen were arrested and a third is on the run after the attack on the Shah Cheragh mosque, the second holiest site in Iran." (10/26/22)

"A 19-year-old South Florida man captured 28 Burmese pythons during a 10-day competition that was created to increase awareness about the threats the invasive snakes pose to the state's ecology. Matthew Concepcion was among the 1,000 participants from 32 states, Canada and Latvia who participated in the annual challenge, which removed 231 of the unwanted pythons, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said in a news release. For his efforts, Concepcion was awarded the $10,000 Ultimate Grand Prize courtesy of the Bergeron Everglades Foundation. Dustin Crum won a $1,500 grand prize for removing the longest python, at just over 11 feet (3.3 meters)." (10/26/22)

13) IA: FBI joins probe amid woman's claim father killed up to 70 victims
Source: Fox News

"An Iowa man has been posthumously accused -- by none other than one of his daughters -- of killing 50 to 70 women, and then ordering his children to help move their bodies, according to a recent report. Lucy Studey told Newsweek her father, Donald Dean Studey, killed the dozens of young women over the course of 30 years in their small hometown of Thurman, Iowa, and enlisted his kids to help bury his victims. After decades of Lucy Studey allegedly trying to get the attention of law enforcement, human remains detection K9s reportedly made discoveries at locations that she had suggested. ... Fremont County Sheriff Kevin Aistrope told Newsweek he believes Lucy '100 percent that there's bodies in there.' However, Aistrope told the Des Moines Register investigators do not yet have any proof other than a pair of cadaver dog alerts. ... Donald Studey's other daughter, Susan Studey, denied her sister's claims ..." (10/26/22)

The comment referred to a 'Let thank sink in' internet meme. 15) International Space Station fires thrusters to dodge Russian space debris
Source: PC magazine

"On Monday evening, NASA was forced to fire thrusters on the International Space Station (ISS) in order to avoid a collision with Russian space debris. Russia's reckless anti-satellite weapons test last year involved launching a ground-based missile to knock out a target in orbit. That target was the Cosmos 1408 satellite, and it caused a new debris field other objects orbiting the Earth need to avoid. One piece of that debris was set to collide with the ISS yesterday, so NASA took avoiding action(Opens in a new window) by firing the Progress 81 thrusters for just over 5 minutes (305 seconds)." Circuit Court Judge Edward Miller ruled that Meadows needed to cooperate in the probe by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, which is looking at possible 2020 election interference in the state by former President Trump and his allies. ... Meadows's team said they are planning to appeal the ruling, according to The New York Times." (10/26/22)

The UN's World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said levels of climate-warming carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide all reached new records last year. Methane -- which remains in the atmosphere for only about 10 years, but has a much more powerful warming impact than CO2 -- had its biggest year-on-year jump in concentrations since systematic measurements began nearly 40 years ago." Daniel Edmund Duggan appeared in court in New South Wales on Friday, judicial records show. ... An aviation source told Reuters that the FBI sought Duggan because he had worked in China. 19) Dog bites man: Second woman alleges Walker was involved in abortion
Source: Axios

"A second woman has alleged that Herschel Walker, the Republican nominee in Georgia's Senate race, was involved in her getting an abortion. Walker has taken a strong anti-abortion stance in the hotly contested Senate race during this year's midterm election cycle. The woman, who was identified by attorney Gloria Allred as 'Jane Doe,' during a news conference Wednesday claimed Walker had 'pressured' her into getting an abortion after she learned she was pregnant in April 1993. ... The first allegation, from the mother of one of Walker's children, involved a receipt from an abortion clinic and a check signed by Walker. Walker has told NBC News that he gave a $700 check to a former partner in 2009, but he denied allegations that the money was used to pay for an abortion." (10/26/22)

21) Americans Oppose Big Government, Unless Their Party Is in Power
Source: Reason
by JD Tuccille

"Even as both major political parties commit themselves to ambitious programs of spending, shaping society through legislation, and punishing anybody who looks at them cross-eyed, the American people continue to believe the government is too powerful and does too much. The catch is that people are most committed to smaller, restrained government when their favored party is out of power. That may be because they think their preferred policies are so wonderful that anything justifies their implementation, but the evidence suggests that it's really hatred of opponents throwing not only commitment to smaller government, but even liberal-democratic norms, out the window." Interview with Tim Robbins. Robbins: "[I]f you believe that the vaccines have helped you, then all power to you. If for some reason you didn't vaccinate and you made it through this, all power to you too. You shouldn't be excluded from society for doing that. I am a hundred percent sure of that. I think that was a mistake. I think it was done out of fear. I forgive it, but to continue it at this point is irrational, in my opinion. No one has stood up for people who might be immunocompromised, or couldn't take the vaccine, or people that are just holistic and don't take any kind of medicine at all. 23) Hillary Clinton goes full "Stop the Steal"
Source: spiked
by Jenny Holland

"In a video released earlier this week, failed presidential candidate Hillary Clinton warns Americans of the next big threat to democracy: a right-wing plot to steal the 2024 presidential election. Listening to Hillary's carefully chosen words, watching her piercing blue eyes zeroing in on the camera, you could be forgiven for forgetting that the Democrats and the mainstream media have spent the past two years insisting that the US voting system is robust and safe. They say there were no election irregularities in 2020 and anyone who says otherwise is either a domestic-terror threat or a ridiculous crank. But this is not so for 2024, according to Clinton. 'Right-wing extremists already have a plan,' she says in the video, 'to literally steal the next presidential election. And they're not making a secret of it.'" (10/26/22)

"It might surprise you to learn this, but I don't like change. Well, that's not completely accurate: I don't like pointless change. I have tolerated uncomfortable situations simply to avoid the pain of going through a change I couldn't see as improving anything. However, if something is broken and I can see a solution, I want to change it. This is why I try to save people from their addiction to political government and all its various manifestations, such as police, taxation, various prohibitions, and so forth. Source: Independent Institute
by Craig Eyermann

"Not only do many federal government employees have access to insider information that they could profit from through their investments, but they also have the power to influence how their investments might perform. The WSJ's reporters have broken the news of a scandal involving federal government employees enriching themselves through their insider status. And they did it at the worst possible time. Profiteering is a term Americans usually hear only during times of war. It is usually applied to companies selling war goods at high prices to the U.S. government. But that term comes immediately to mind because of how certain federal government employees seized the opportunity to personally profit from the coronavirus pandemic." (10/26/22)

26) Worthless House "Progressives" Retract Mild Peace Advocacy Under Pressure From Warmongers
Source: Caitlin Johnstone, Rogue Journalist
by Caitlin Johnstone

"The Congressional Progressive Caucus has retracted an extremely mild, toothless letter its members had written to President Biden politely asking him to consider adding a little diplomacy into the mix to help end the conflict in Ukraine. The retraction followed a deluge of public outrage against their slight deviation from the official imperial narrative. If you actually read the original letter ... you will quickly see that it's as innocuous and anodyne as any statement could possibly be while still containing words. It opens with effusive praise for Biden's interventionism in Ukraine and condemns the Russian government unequivocally throughout, offering only the humble suggestion that he 'pair the military and economic support the United States has provided to Ukraine with a proactive diplomatic push, redoubling efforts to seek a realistic framework for a ceasefire.'" 27) As Meta Searches For the Future, Lina Khan Aims to Suffocate It
Source: American Institute for Economic Research
by John Tamny

"If the future genius of the internet had at all been apparent, Amazon wouldn't exist today. And it wouldn't exist because well-capitalized companies of the 1990s like Walmart, Circuit City, and Target would have long ago put it out of business. ... That Amazon is worth so much is a reminder that Jeff Bezos saw what vanishingly few saw, only for him to create an all-new future. Amazon's achievements rate mention ahead of a discussion of Facebook, which can presently claim a rather massive market valuation of $358 billion. Though not presently as valuable as Amazon, Facebook's market cap tells the same story as Amazon's does .... If Facebook's future success had been at all apparent it, like Amazon, would have been put out of business long ago. All of which brings us to FTC Chairman Lina Khan. Khan is aggressively at work trying to shrink Meta." (10/26/22)

"We sat down with Captain Mickey Shelton of the Tennessee National Guard to get an honest look at the struggles unvaccinated guard members continue to face. It may surprise Tennesseans to find out that the COVID vaccination is not only still mandated for National Guard members, but are also required for the 500 volunteers in the Tennessee State Guard, despite it being a completely state-funded, state-directed, unpaid force. Though President Biden declared that the 'pandemic [was] over' during a September interview with 60 Minutes, the military still hasn't retracted their vaccine mandate." 30) Urban collapse -- Cleveland style
Source: The Price of Liberty
by Nathan Barton

"The events are incredible. This comes from Cleveland, Ohio, and a high school there. ... In summary: four armed car thieves (in stolen cars) show up at a high school in session. The school security officer locks down the school, but two 'assistant principals' override the security guy (on the phone with dispatch getting police to respond) and let the thieves inside the school building (admittedly, just an anteroom) to protect them from the police! Ultimately the thieves try to run from the cops and are captured, apparently without deadly violence. We have yet another example of the insanity of the people running far too many American schools, and the levels of crime facing urban areas in this year 2022. This time, there was no bloodshed, as far as we can see. But it looks like a near thing." (10/26/22)

31) North Koreans embrace truth over consequences
Source: Christian Science Monitor
by staff

"North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has been busy this year flexing his military muscles. His reclusive country has held an unprecedented number of weapons tests, even sending a ballistic missile over Japan. It appears ready to conduct a seventh underground nuclear bomb test, the first in five years. Why now? One reason may be that the third leader of the Kim dynasty needs to shore up loyalty by bedazzling his people. The economy is in shambles, but most of all, too many North Koreans are bypassing state propaganda to learn the truth about the outside world. More people are watching foreign news and cultural shows on smuggled computer devices such as micro SD cards, according to a rare survey conducted clandestinely from June to August by the South Korea-based Unification Media Group (UMG)." 32) Attack of the Zombie Populists
Source: The Atlantic
by Yascha Mounk

"When, in September, Boris Johnson left office after two-and-a-half turbulent years as prime minister, he defended his record with some jokes and a sprinkling of classical allusion. 'Like Cincinnatus, I am now returning to my plough,' he said. As many commentators were quick to point out, the reference to Cincinnatus contained a coded meaning. After this Roman consul left office, he returned to his small ancestral farm to till the fields, only to be recalled to government at a moment of great crisis. ... For a brief spell over the weekend, Britain's Conservative Party seriously considered the idea of calling Boris Johnson back to power. ... How could Johnson have come so close to returning from the political wilderness less than four months after disgrace forced the announcement of his departure from office? The story of Johnson's near resurrection, though remarkable, is less peculiar than it might seem." (10/26/22)

33) The US Oligarchy Is Getting Exactly the Kind of Election It Paid For
Source: Common Dreams
by Thom Hartmann

"The polls are tightening up right now, and the media is treating it like it's some mystical force of nature causing people to shift their concerns from abortion, guns, climate, democracy, and the survival of Social Security over to gas prices, Black crime, banning books, and trans kids playing sports. Republicans on the Supreme Court have, with their bizarre 'money is free speech' decisions, put America on the fast track to oligarchy, authoritarianism, and ultimately tyranny. In the early 1970s, I was a partner with the late Terry O'Connor in a small Michigan advertising agency, Ter Graphics, and a copywriter for another, Barden-Durst, run by the late Bob Strand. Our biggest clients were Kellogg's and Michigan National Bank, and I learned the business from these men and from in-person instruction by the legendary Joe Sugarman, to whom I'm grateful to this day." 35) Right-wingers' shamelessness is nothing to envy
Source: Washington Post
by Jennifer Rubin

"During the Trump administration, it was fashionable among progressive cynics to declare that 'nothing matters': No misdeed, lie or blunder on President Donald Trump's part would ever entail any consequences. But in the wake of his 2020 loss and the multipronged criminal investigations into him, we can see that that adage isn't accurate. What is true, however, is that 'nothing matters' to fellow Republicans; they've become fortified by utter shamelessness .... Take Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas's repeated refusal to recuse himself from considering matters directly related to the 2020 coup attempt, which we know his wife, Ginni Thomas, participated in .... He did it again Monday, refusing to sit out Sen. Lindsey O. Graham's (R-S.C.) appeal to be rescued from testifying to a grand jury about Trump's efforts to 'find' votes and reverse Georgia's election results." (10/26/22)

Take it away, crazy lady. ... [HILLARY CLINTON Video] ... She claims that even the 2024 election, which is more than two years away, could already be undone by evil Republicans who have the power to overturn presidential elections. 38) Josep Borrell's "jungle" trope was no slip of the tongue
Source: Responsible Statecraft
by Jan Eijking

"'Europe is a garden.' With this odd choice of words on October 13, Josep Borrell, the foreign affairs chief of the European Union, inaugurated a Bruges-based pilot program for a new European Diplomatic Academy, or EDA. 'We have built a garden,' Borrell continued, where 'everything works.' But the lush lawns are under threat: 'most of the rest of the world is a jungle' and, as neoconservative thinker Robert Kagan once put it, 'the jungle grows back.' Unsurprisingly, the speech was met with indignation among the public, government officials, and diplomats. ... Invoking such a cultural framing in 2022 is unsavory at best. It is also diplomatically counterproductive .... And yet tellingly, this was no mere slip of the tongue." (10/26/22)

"As a longtime opponent of war and a believer in the idea that talking always beats fighting, I was slightly heartened by the news yesterday that the Progressive Caucus had sent a letter to Joe Biden urging him to try diplomacy to reach a settlement in the conflict in Ukraine. Finally, I thought, a whiff of sanity. ... Therefore, imagine my surprise and now anger at the news that your caucus withdrew its letter. Your action tells me that you do not have the strength of your convictions and that your politics are timid and without any analysis beyond what your party leaders tell you will win you elections. This ball of liberty, I believe most piously, is now so well in motion that it will roll round the globe, at least the enlightened part of it, for light & liberty go together.' 41) The Crises That Overturned Our Politics
Source: The American Prospect
by Stanley B Greenberg

"The United States has been hit by four simultaneous global crises that have totally upended our politics, energy policies, and strategic worldview. Democratic and Republican leaders here have barely accommodated their politics to these changes, but they will not be amused long by the chaos in the United Kingdom. It is very much part of the destructive waves hitting both our shores. The first crisis was the spike in prices from the disrupted supply chains when countries came out of the pandemic. Second, an energy crisis produced by the war in Ukraine suddenly reduced Russian oil and natural gas supplied to the West. ... The third crisis was the climate crisis -- the unrelenting extreme weather that started with the out-of-control fires in forest areas in Europe and California." (10/26/22)

43) Voting for War
Source: The American Conservative
by Micah Meadowcroft

"Elections, for ordinary Americans, are supposed to be little check-ins while we get on with the important American stuff, high and low: worshiping God as we feel called to, or making obscene amounts of money. That, of course, was probably always more theory than practice. And as the federal government has collected client classes left and right over the last century its regulations have filled in any space for an ordinary citizen to live life without it ... So it is worth pointing out that American voters are not only not unusual, but actually right in the system's own terms -- whatever you are calling this regime -- to care a lot about inflation, energy, and crime going into this midterm election. But that has not stopped liberal internationalists from declaring November a referendum not on the United States Congress, but on Ukraine and the idea of democracy itself." (10/26/22)

44) Why the GOP Should Be Nicer to the LP
Source: Libertarian Institute
by Walter E Block

"Marc Victor is not going to win the 2022 senatorial campaign in Arizona. The best prognostications are that he'll only garner some 15% of the vote! So why write about him? Simple: he is neither a Democrat nor a Republican, but a third party Libertarian candidate poised to 'ruin' yet another election, at least from the perspective of the latter. ... without Mr. Victor, a former Marine, in the race, it would be almost a dead heat between Republican Blake Masters (backed by The Donald) and Mark Kelly, the Democratic incumbent. ... There is now much wailing and gnashing of teeth amongst Republicans. It is much exacerbated since Shane Hazel ... pulled off a similar feat in the election of 2020 which vaulted Democrat Jon Ossoff into that august body instead of Republican David Perdue, who almost certainly would have otherwise won." 45) Biden Mistakenly Imagines That Congress Approved His Student Debt Cancellation Scheme
Source: Town Hall
by Jacob Sullum

"President Joe Biden recently claimed his student loan forgiveness plan was authorized by 'a law' that he 'just signed' after Congress narrowly approved it. 'It's passed,' he said during a NowThis News panel discussion. 'I got it passed by a vote or two.' In reality, the debt cancellation program was never approved by Congress, which is the main argument underlying several legal challenges to it. By trying to unilaterally relieve some 43 million Americans of the obligation to repay money they borrowed for college, those lawsuits say, the Biden administration overstepped its statutory authority, violating the rule of law and the constitutional separation of powers. In August, the administration announced a program that would cancel up to $10,000 in student debt owed by individuals earning less than $125,000 a year or couples with incomes below $250,000. Recipients of Pell Grants would receive up to $20,000 in relief." (10/26/22)

Baristas at cafes in Oklahoma, Washington, Arizona, Vermont, Kansas, New Jersey and Tennessee have been wearing the pin, according to Starbucks Workers United (SBWU). The subtle protest comes as the coffee giant continues its relentless onslaught of union busting against SBWU, which has successfully unionized some 250 cafes since December 2021. Meanwhile, the union says workers have reported more than 120 'retaliatory firings.' ...
