1)  Ukraine war: Putin declares "martial law" in areas occupied by Russian military
Source: St. Louis Post-Dispatch

"Russian President Vladimir Putin declared martial law Wednesday in the four regions of Ukraine that Moscow annexed and given [sic] additional emergency powers to the heads of all regions of Russia. Putin didn't immediately spell out the steps that would be taken under martial law, but said his order was effective starting Thursday. His decree gives law enforcement agencies three days to submit specific proposals. ... The upper house of Russia's parliament was set to quickly seal Putin's decision to impose martial law in the four regions. Draft legislation indicates it may involve restrictions on travel and public gatherings, tighter censorship and broader authority for law enforcement agencies." (10/19/22)

2)  Judge orders more Eastman emails released, citing fraud pushed by disgraced former president
Source: The Hill

"A California-based federal judge ordered a legal advisor to President Trump to turn over records tied to Jan. 6 to the House committee investigating the attack, finding the communications were not protected since they were exchanged in likely furtherance of a crime. Included in the emails is evidence that Trump pushed ahead in court with voter fraud claims he knew were inaccurate -- details certain to be of interest to the House Select Committee. Judge David Carter ordered John Eastman, who crafted two memos for the Trump campaign detailing methods to resist certifying President Biden's victory, to turn over some 33 documents to the House panel. That includes eight documents the judge said related to crimes of obstructing an official proceeding and conspiracy to defraud the United States." (10/19/22)

3)  UK: Braverman resigns as home secretary after sharing secure information from private email, takes aim at Liz Truss in departure
Source: Sky News [UK]

"Suella Braverman has resigned from Liz Truss's government after sending an official document from her personal email -- and has taken aim at the prime minister as she departed the Home Office. In her resignation letter sent to the PM on Wednesday, the now former home secretary acknowledged she had breached government security rules, stating: 'I have made a mistake; I accept responsibility; I resign.' The former Conservative leadership candidate also expressed 'concerns about the direction of this government.' ... Ms Braverman also emphasised in her letter to Ms Truss that 'resignation is the right thing to do' when 'a mistake' is made. ... the PM made a public apology to MPs in her first Commons appearance since her economic plan was ditched by new Chancellor Jeremy Hunt on Monday. 'I have been very clear that I am sorry and that I have made mistakes,' she said." (10/19/22)

4)  Appeals court: CFPB's structure is unconstitutional
Source: National Public Radio [US state media]

"A federal appeals court has ruled that the funding structure of the nation's most powerful financial watchdog agency, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, is unconstitutional. In a case brought by a payday lending group, a three-judge panel of the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals threw out a CFPB regulation governing those high-interest-rate lenders and ruled that the way the bureau is funded, 'violates the Constitution's structural separation of powers.' ... the bureau receives its funding from the Federal Reserve, not Congress. It was that part of its structure that the court said violates the Constitution." (10/19/22)

5)  CDC corrects Carlson: It can't mandate COVID-19 vaccines in schools
Source: ABC News

"The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is pushing back on a claim made by Fox News'[s] Tucker Carlson, who said on his show this week that a CDC decision was likely coming to force kids to get COVID-19 vaccines in order to attend school. But that's not actually within the CDC's authority, as the CDC pointed out in a rare tweet on Wednesday correcting Carlson, who has a history of criticizing COVID vaccine policy or sharing incorrect information about the shots. ... 'States establish vaccine requirements for school children, not [the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices] or CDC,' the agency wrote in response to Carlson's segment." (10/19/22)

6)  Taxpayer group asks SCOTUS to block Biden student debt relief program
Source: CNBC

"The Supreme Court on Wednesday was asked to block the Biden administration's student loan debt relief program, which is set to take effect this weekend. The request by the Brown County Taxpayers Association in Wisconsin was directed to Justice Amy Coney Barrett, who is responsible for handling emergency application requests from the 7th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the group's request. A federal judge in Wisconsin earlier this month dismissed the taxpayers association's lawsuit challenging the program, ruling that the group did not have legal standing to block the plan. The group then filed an appeal of that ruling to the 7th Circuit appeals court." (10/19/22)

7)  Canada: Yukon regime cedes cannabis retail sales to private sector
Source: MJBizDaily

"The government of one of Canada's three remote northern territories has shut down its online cannabis retail website after four years in business, turning over adult-use sales to a handful of private-sector retailers. 'In May 2022, the Government of Yukon introduced regulations that allow licensed cannabis retailers in the Yukon to sell and deliver legal cannabis products to Yukoners,' the territorial government said in a news release. 'This fulfilled the Government of Yukon's commitment to support the Yukon's private cannabis industry.' The Cannabis Yukon retail website will be 're-purposed to provide wholesale purchasing options to the Yukon's licensed retailers,' according to the release, which was issued Tuesday on the fourth anniversary of recreational cannabis legalization in Canada." 8)  Poll: Democrats' generic ballot lead shrinks to 1%
Source: The Hill

"Democrats' lead over Republicans on the generic congressional ballot now stands at 1 point with just three weeks left until Election Day, according to a Politico-Morning Consult poll released on Wednesday. Forty-five percent of registered voters in the new survey said they would vote for the Democratic candidate in their congressional district, compared to the 44 percent who would cast their ballots for the Republican. Another 11 percent in the poll said they didn't know who they would vote for or had no opinion. Democrats' lead on the generic congressional ballot has ticked down in recent weeks as the party has lost some of the traction it gained over the summer, leading some to worry that Democrats peaked too soon for the midterm elections." 9)  Actress Anna May Wong becomes first Asian American on US currency
Source: BBC News [UK state media]

"Actress Anna May Wong is set to become the first Asian American to be featured on US currency. She will appear as part of an effort to feature notable women on American quarters. Wong, who is considered the first Chinese American film star in Hollywood, is the fifth and final woman to be individually featured on the coin this year. The quarter will enter general circulation on Monday. It will feature President George Washington on one side and Wong on the other. Ventris Gibson, director of the US Mint, called Wong 'a courageous advocate who championed for increased representation and more multi-dimensional roles for Asian American actors.' 'This quarter is designed to reflect the breadth and depth of accomplishments by Anna May Wong, who overcame challenges and obstacles she faced during her lifetime,' she said." (10/19/22)

10) India: Opposition Congress party elects new president
Source: Yahoo! News

"India's main opposition Congress party elected Mallikarjun Kharge as its new president on Wednesday in a contest in which the Nehru-Gandhi family, which has led the party for more than two decades, did not compete. The party, which has long touted its secular politics, has struggled to regain support since being routed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party in 2014. Kharge, 80, from the southern state of Karnataka, was backed by the party's top leaders. ... Interim party President Sonia Gandhi and her son, Rahul Gandhi, announced last month that no one from the family would seek the party's leadership at this time. Their decision to bring in a new leader ahead of key upcoming elections reflects the party's need to shed its image as a family dynasty, analysts said." (10/19/22)

11) Abbott CEO provides update on progress as baby formula shortage persists
Source: Fox News

"Abbott Laboratories CEO Robert Ford said Wednesday the company has made progress in addressing the ongoing baby formula shortage in the U.S. over the past several months, providing a status update and revealing changes aimed at preventing another crisis. Ford said during an earnings call that the company made leadership changes both in the organization and at its troubled Sturgis, Michigan, facility, which was shut down in February and contributed significantly to the nationwide shortages. He did not offer specifics on the management changes. Following a number of setbacks, production at the Sturgis plant resumed in July, prioritizing specialty formulas like EleCare, and popular Similac products made at the plant are expected to be available at retailers over the coming weeks, Ford noted." 12) SC: BMW plans $1.7 billion expansion for electric vehicle production
Source: Jalopnik

"BMW is investing big time in South Carolina. The automaker announced it will be putting $1.7 billion into U.S. locations to ramp up electric vehicle production here. According to Reuters, one billion of those dollars will be heading straight to BMW's already-existing factory in Spartanburg, South Carolina -- which just produced its six-millionth vehicle -- to beef up its EV production at the plant. The other $700 million will be spent on a new high-voltage battery assembly plant in Woodruff, South Carolina. A spokesperson for the company says it is the single biggest investment it has ever done. This is all part of BMW's reported plans to build at least six fully-electric BMW models in the U.S. by the end of this decade." (10/19/22)

13) AZ: Registration error affects up to 6,000 voters
Source: SFGate

"A voter registration error may have caused some Arizona voters to get a mail ballot with only federal races, Secretary of State Katie Hobbs said Tuesday. A problem with the link between voter registration and driver's license databases may have caused as many as 6,000 voters to be improperly flagged as lacking proof of citizenship documentation on file. Election officials are sifting through the list to determine how many of the 6,000 were improperly flagged. ... Hobbs has staked her campaign for governor largely on her staunch defense of the 2020 election in the face of criticism from former President Donald Trump and his allies. Her Republican rival, former television news anchor Kari Lake, has spread Trump's unsupported claims of fraud two years ago and has called on Hobbs to step aside from overseeing the midterms while she's on the ballot." 14) People of Ukraine Collectively Awarded EU's Highest Human Rights Prize
Source: Common Dreams

"For their efforts to protect 'democracy, freedom, and rule of law' amid Russia's invasion, the people of Ukraine were named the collective recipients of the European Union's most prestigious human rights award on Wednesday. Announcing the winners of the Sakharov Prize, E.U. lawmakers particularly praised Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who drew international praise in the early weeks of Russia's attack on his country for remaining in Kyiv to rally the public and appeal to Russian soldiers not to participate in the war. ... The country's emergency services; volunteer medic Yuliia Paievska, who was held captive by the Russian military for three months; human rights activist Oleksandra Matviychuk; and Mayor Ivan Fedorov of the occupied city of Melitopol, who was abducted and held for five days after refusing to collaborate with the Russians, were also named as notable Ukrainians." Its goal: to help students succeed in school and land well-paying jobs when they graduate, given research that shows the connection between strong math skills and career success. 16) Group sues Biden, National Archives over JFK assassination records
Source: NBC News

"The country's largest online source of JFK assassination records is suing President Joe Biden and the National Archives to force the federal government to release all remaining documents related to the most mysterious murder of a U.S. president nearly 60 years ago. The Mary Ferrell Foundation filed the federal lawsuit Wednesday one year after Biden issued a memo postponing the release of a final trove of 16,000 records assembled under the President John F. Kennedy Assassination Records Collection Act of 1992, which Congress passed without opposition in response to Oliver Stone's Oscar-nominated film 'JFK.' The JFK records act, signed by former President Bill Clinton, required that the documents be made public by Oct. 26, 2017, but President Donald Trump delayed the release and kicked the can to Biden, who critics say continued the policy of federal obfuscation that has existed since Kennedy was assassinated Nov. 22, 1963, in an open motorcade at Dealey Plaza in Dallas." 17) IRS sets higher tax brackets, standard deduction for 2023 as inflation rages
Source: Fox News

"The Internal Revenue Service this week announced higher inflation adjustments for the 2023 tax year as it takes into account the relentless increase in the cost of basic goods like food, rent and gasoline. The higher limits for the federal income tax bracket and standard deductions are intended to avoid a phenomenon known as 'bracket creep,' which happens when taxpayers are pushed into higher-income brackets even though their purchasing power is essentially unchanged due to steeper prices for most goods. The IRS makes such adjustments annually, but in times of painfully high inflation, the increases are more significant and impactful for taxpayers. The government reported last week that the consumer price index, which measures a basket of everyday goods, rose 8.2% in September, much faster than expected. Core prices, excluding gasoline and food, jumped 6.6%, the fastest since 1982. This year, the tax brackets are shifting higher by about 7%." (10/19/22)

"At least two bombs exploded outside a prison in Myanmar's Yangon on Wednesday, killing eight people and wounding 18, in the latest blasts to rock the commercial hub. The bombs hit a crowd queuing to drop off parcels for inmates at Insein Prison, an information team for the country's junta authorities said in a statement, without specifying exactly how many explosions had occurred. The junta blamed 'terrorists' and said the dead included three prison staff and a 10-year-old girl. It added that security forces had defused another 'homemade mine' device found nearby." (10/19/22)

Source: SFGate

"COVID-19 drove a dramatic increase in the number of women who died from pregnancy or childbirth complications in the U.S. last year, a crisis that has disproportionately claimed Black and Hispanic women as victims, according to a report released Wednesday. The report lays out grim trends across the country for expectant mothers and their newborn babies. It finds that pregnancy-related deaths have spiked nearly 80% since 2018, with COVID-19 being a factor in a quarter of the 1,178 deaths reported last year. The percentage of preterm and low birthweight babies also went up last year, after holding steady for years. And more pregnant or postpartum women are reporting symptoms of depression." (10/19/22)

21) The Jury Was Right Not to Give the Parkland Killer the Death Penalty
Source: Libertarian Party
by Angela McArdle

"Most people struggle to comprehend the sheer, aberrant evil of a premeditated act like a mass shooting. Defense attorneys try to rationalize these killings with arguments about mental health, tragic upbringings, and extenuating circumstances. While these issues might have contributed to the dark psyche of many murderers, they don't ease the pain of victims' families or erase any of the shock and horror of mass murder. Those left behind aren't comforted by hearing about the sob story of the person who murdered their loved ones. ... Driven by righteous anger, our instinct is to meet death with death. Yet, as sympathetic as I am to the families who grieve for their loved ones and yearn for justice, I do not believe the death penalty should ever be used, not even in cases as bad as the Parkland shooter." 22) Tulsi Gabbard Doesn't Really Stand for Anything
Source: The Daily Beast
by Matt Lewis

"Last week, former Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard announced she was leaving the Democratic Party because it had become 'an elitist cabal of warmongers driven by cowardly wokeness.' ... It's worth asking: When exactly did the Democratic Party become woke warmongers? Was it before or after Gabbard backed Clinton and Biden? ... A common thread among the MAGA upstarts is that they are opportunistic and attention-starved. Politics, once dreary and boring to the general public, is now a gateway to widespread attention, and the far right has by far the lowest barrier to entry. In this regard, Gabbard is merely the latest celebrity brand to hop on the conservative entertainment wing's wagon in pursuit of even more clout. ... Having used her perch in Congress to establish a platform, she is now transitioning into her new role as celebrity influencer. It's the political version of the Kardashians." (10/20/22)

"What if you could generate a photorealistic picture of anything you could imagine? It would have sounded like wizardry even 10 years ago, but it's the reality of AI programs like DALL-E 2 and Stable Diffusion. Unsurprisingly, this powerful technology is raising fears about everything from political misinformation to defamatory images to political deepfakes. Against this backdrop, a Washington Post article from the end of September bears dire warnings about the dangers of this new technology available to the public, along with calls for new legislation to curb the harmful use of such technology -- that is to say, to censor it. That article contains no mention of the First Amendment, or even of freedom of speech interests more broadly, so we'd like to offer that perspective." (10/19/22)

"Thanks to Sarah Palin's recent defeat in her run for Alaska's single congressional seat in a special election, ranked choice voting (RCV) is in the news. Unfortunately, because many Republicans are dissatisfied with the result, some on the right are attacking RCV as a concept. Senator Tom Cotton, for example, reacted to the result by calling RCV 'a scam.' His complaint is understandable, but also mistaken. We should not overstate what RCV can accomplish, but it may lessen many persistent problems in U.S. politics." (10/19/22)

25) Prohibition has opposite effect
Source: Eastern New Mexico News
by Kent McManigal

"If there is a pre-existing problem, make sure any solution you try isn't going to have the unintended consequence of making things worse. In some cases, much worse. Such as what has happened with the War on Politically Incorrect Drugs. I understand the desire to try to stop people from abusing, and dying of, dangerous drugs like Fentanyl. However, it would have been better to have never started down the doomed path of prohibition which made Fentanyl (and the stronger drugs which will replace it) inevitable. With litter and prohibition, irresponsible people made a mess and the rest of us have to deal with it. But picking up trash doesn't make litter worse, while prohibition does make drug abuse much worse." (10/19/22)

26) The force of peaceful tactics
Source: Christian Science Monitor
by staff

"At a time of global concern about democracy, violent crackdowns against protesters in Iran and Myanmar illustrate the difficulty of challenging authoritarian rule. Yet in two countries, Sudan and Venezuela, the tactics of pro-democracy activists may be showing how peaceful transitions are not just possible but perhaps inevitable. Both countries are being nudged by regional and Western leaders toward talks to restore inclusive and accountable government bound by the rule of law. That goal, observers say, may rest on a characteristic the two countries share -- a commitment by activists to nonviolence. As the United States Institute of Peace noted earlier this month, 'an asset that can help Sudan build the more responsive governance it needs is the country's remarkably vibrant, deeply rooted tradition of nonviolent civic action.'" Source: Foundation for Economic Education
by Aadi Golchha

"Regardless of whom you blame for the inflation, there could not be a worse way of fighting it than with interventionist price-control measures. As any Econ 101 student could tell you, prices naturally settle at the point where supply meets demand in a market economy. But when the government imposes an artificial cap on prices, supply declines and demand increases, creating a shortage. 28) Gold as Natural Money
Source: Ludwig von Mises Institute
by James Turk

"The timeless reliability in the interconnection of gold's supply and demand sets gold apart from national currencies as does its essential nature. Gold is tangible; national currencies are an intangible financial promise with counterparty risk. This risk arises because promises do get broken, as was demonstrated in the 2008 financial crisis and countless other banking and fiat currency crises. Gold is natural money that has served humanity well throughout history by enabling people to achieve an ever-higher standard of living." (10/19/22)

29) Democrats Are in Trouble With Hispanics
Source: Wall Street Journal
by William Galston

"Republican gains among Hispanic voters have generated a wave of concern among Democratic strategists. In 2020, Donald Trump received 38% of the Hispanic vote nationally, compared with 28% in 2016, according to a state-of-the-art Pew study that verified individual votes and is considered more reliable than exit polls. In Florida, Mr. Trump's share rose to 46% from 35%, and in Texas to 41% from 31%. He made large gains in other states as well. If these gains are sustained in the midterm elections, Democrats will be forced to concede that a group they long regarded as a cornerstone of a new Democratic majority has instead become a swing group for whose allegiance they must fight." 30) Singer and the Noble Lie
Source: Bet On It
by Bryan Caplan

"After my debate with Peter Singer, I speculated that some version of the Noble Lie explained his apparent abandonment of extreme utilitarianism .... Singer seems to have completely abandoned the extreme view that we are morally obliged to give away all our surplus resources to the poor. Instead, he just pushed for a rough charity target of 10% of total income. Singer reaffirmed his devotion to utilitarianism, but never explained why he drastically changed his mind about the morally obligatory level of donation. I suspect the reason is that publicly defending the actual implications of utilitarianism alienates listeners, so a true utilitarian is morally obliged to conceal what true utilitarianism requires. In other words, you get better utilitarian results by misstating the implications of utilitarianism." (10/19/22)

31) Social Security's 8.7% COLA Will Protect Retirees From Inflation, but Will Hasten Program's Insolvency
Source: Independent Institute
by Rachel Greszler

"The Social Security Administration announced Thursday that beneficiaries will receive an 8.7% cost-of-living adjustment next year. That's good news for seniors today who -- like all other Americans -- are struggling with rising costs, but it comes at the expense of a diminished Social Security system for current and future retirees. Social Security is funded by current workers' payroll taxes, but since the average worker's wages increased only 4.1% over the past year, that means Social Security's revenues have increased at less than half the rate of its newly announced expenditure increase. Add in the fact that there are 2.8 million fewer people working today compared with the pre-pandemic employment-to-population ratio, and Social Security's revenues are almost certainly below trend while its costs are above trend." 32) The Most Powerful Weapon The West Gave Ukraine
Source: Caitlin Johnstone, Rogue Journalist
by Caitlin Johnstone

"It's pretty wild how the US is sending armored vehicles to Haiti to help quash the exact sort of uprising it's been actively trying to create in places like Iran, Venezuela, Cuba and Hong Kong. ... The Pentagon is seeking sweeping new powers in preparation for a war with China, the Senate NDAA bill increases proposed military aid to Taiwan from 4.5 to 10 billion dollars, and Tony Blinken is claiming without evidence that Beijing has greatly accelerated its plans to annex Taiwan. This is all as aggressions continue to ramp up against Russia. They really are doing this thing. ... So it looks like this is what we'll be doing for the foreseeable future: calling to escalate the war in Ukraine, facilitating the escalation of the war in Ukraine, and then screaming with shock and outrage when the war in Ukraine escalates." 33) Federal Report Adds to the Evidence That Bitemark Analysis Is Nonsense
Source: Reason
by JD Tuccille

"Despite the popularity of cop shows about investigators bringing criminals to justice based on a few fingernail clippings and a dropped tissue, the track record of forensic evidence is spotty at best. Critics, including Reason journalists, have shown that too much crime-stopper 'science' resembles tea-leaf reading more than it does the efforts of Sherlock Holmes. Now a federal agency says that bitemark analysis, something of a poster child for bad forensic technique, is every bit as sketchy as skeptics claim. 'Forensic bitemark analysis lacks a sufficient scientific foundation because the three key premises of the field are not supported by the data,' finds a draft report from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)." 34) E-ska-nomics of Immigration
Source: EconLog
by Nathan Goodman

"In a previous EconLog post I discuss the origins of ska. But how did we get from ska to ska punk? Jamaican immigration to England was crucial to the birth of ska punk. ... Immigration allows people to associate and learn from people with very different knowledge and life experiences. One result is that they can combine their ideas, creating something new and wonderful. In this case, a genre of music and a scene that brings many people joy to this day. ... Ska punk may not be your favorite genre. But chances are that at least one thing you love, whether it's a type of music, food, art, technology, or consumer product, is a similar result of the creativity, cultural exchange, and entrepreneurship that immigration enables." 35) Prescription Drug Middleman Potentially Profiting off Veterans
Source: The American Prospect
by David Dayen

"One of the three dominant U.S. pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) -- the middlemen that handle the vast majority of prescription drug plans in the United States -- has instituted a scheme that has left roughly 400,000 active-duty and retired military households scrambling for a new pharmacy provider within the next week. Critics say the maneuver is a naked attempt by Express Scripts, the Cigna-owned PBM, to steer beneficiaries toward its own market-leading mail-order pharmacy. Advocates and politicians from both parties have appealed to the Defense Department, which runs the TRICARE Pharmacy Program that was affected by this change. 'The DOD should not be behaving in this way, or allowing its contractor to behave in this way, for what appears to be a money grab,' said Alan Rosenbloom, president and CEO of the Senior Care Pharmacy Coalition ..." 36) The wrong way to combat cancel culture
Source: The Hill
by Steven Lubet

"Judge James Ho created quite a stir when he delivered the keynote address at a Federalist Society conference last month in Kentucky. His condemnation of 'cancel culture' was standard fare for the conservative legal organization that supplied so many Trump administration judicial nominees -- including Ho, for the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. But the big moment came when he castigated Yale Law School for teaching students 'that there are no consequences for their intolerance' of conservative speakers. Citing two notorious incidents in which Yale students faced no disciplinary action for disrupting presentations by conservatives, Ho announced that 'starting today, I will no longer hire law clerks from Yale Law School. And I hope that other judges will join me as well.' That was an unprecedented public pledge from a federal judge. It was also seriously unethical." (10/19/22)

37) Distributing Test Strips a Welcome Step in Fighting Fentanyl Crisis
Source: Cato Institute
by Jeffrey A Singer

"Fox News recently reported that Arizona is handing out fentanyl test strips to county health departments to help combat surging drug overdose deaths. So far, the state has distributed the strips to six counties, while Maricopa County is getting test strips directly from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This is a smart move. After Arizona overdose deaths jumped an estimated 48% during the first eight months of 2020 -- and rose 32% in Maricopa County in all of 2020 -- lawmakers decided to embrace the strategy known as 'harm reduction.'" 38) Cities Sidestep Property Rights With This One Trick
Source: American Institute for Economic Research
by Daryl James & Bob Belden

"The world needs creative problem solvers. But small-business owner Jeremy Sark was not impressed when city officials in Mauldin, S.C. used out-of-the-box thinking to sidestep the state constitution and jeopardize his livelihood. People have a right to use their property in safe, reasonable ways. And if the government wants to revoke that freedom, it must meet two conditions: It must ensure that the interference serves a public use, and it must provide just compensation before destroying someone's business. Yet Mauldin plans to shut down Sark's U-Haul rental franchise, which opened in 2013, without honoring either constitutional protection. Instead of compensating Sark through eminent domain or following other normal procedures, the city simply declared his business illegal with a gimmick called 'amortization.' The scheme is basically retroactive zoning." (10/19/22)

"What a glorious time to be alive. Unless you're a rat. Then you're probably going to die, especially if you're a rat down in the subway. Have you seen the crime going on down there? ... But it's worse at Boston University (Go Felons) where researchers have developed a new COVID strain that has an 80% kill rate. Who did they receive a grant from? The Ted Bundy Foundation? ... They came upon this new strain following experiments that were first thought to have caused a pandemic that had already killed millions. Because if when at first, you don't succeed, kill, kill again. ... The new variant is a combo of Omicron and the original Wuhan virus, and it killed eight out of ten infected mice. ... Meanwhile, the original variant actually killed six out of six rats, making it more lethal. Except you can't compare it because it's ten versus six rats. That's science." (10/19/22)

40) The Price of Propaganda
Source: The Dispatch
by Cliff Smith

"The chief mission of Trump's propagandists was to convince his supporters that the constant attention and condemnation Trump got for, say, attempting to utilize his public office to illegally co-opt a foreign country into doing his campaign work, or threatening an elections official if he didn't invent votes to help him overturn an election, or egging on those who physically threatened Vice President Mike Pence on January 6, was nothing but a political witch hunt, and that Trump was uniquely being targeted for abuse. The substance was too damning. Thus, the 'witch hunt' had to be the takeaway. ... Trump's backers were using a well-utilized playbook. Former President Bill Clinton and his enablers utilized the same basic tactics against the late Ken Starr .... The takeaway couldn't be about Clinton's abuse of power and lawlessness, it had to be Starr and the vast right-wing conspiracy that was out to get him." (10/19/22)

42) Common Misperceptions About Refugees
Source: Common Dreams
by Dr. Jyotika Saksena

"Refugees and immigrants are one of the reasons that the U.S. is the only western country to count among the top 10 populous countries in the world. However, the population grew at the slowest rate in the U.S. in 2021 since the country's founding. Reduced refugee and immigration intake has much to do with it. Even though the Biden administration set the limit to 125,000 refugees a year, the actual intake was fewer than 26,000 refugees. There seems to be a lack of awareness and education in the U.S. about the level of scrutiny refugees go through compared to other immigrants. Refugees contribute a range of skills and diverse experiences to their host countries, but unfortunately, there are many misperceptions and a lack of understanding about the refugee journey. Refugees go through more scrutiny, contribute substantially to the U.S. economy and are more committed than any other immigrants to make America their home." (10/19/22)

And, what do you know, this is bad news for Joe Biden and the Democrats. ...The insistence, that inflation is the only economic issue voters care about, reminds me of the situation a quarter century ago when there was a big push by Republicans, and many Democrats, to cut and/or privatize Social Security." "Most states respect the constitutional right to carry guns in public for self-defense, which the Supreme Court upheld in June. But some states are only pretending to comply with the Second Amendment, as illustrated by the law that New York passed after that decision and a similar bill that legislative leaders in New Jersey introduced last week. In an Oct. 6 ruling, U.S. District Judge Glenn T. Suddaby rejected New York's attempt to defy the Constitution and the Supreme Court. Although New York eliminated a demand that carry permit applicants show 'proper cause,', which the Court said gave licensing officials too much discretion, the state retained and elaborated on a requirement that applicants demonstrate 'good moral character.'" "Blaise Pascal said all human evil comes from inability to sit alone in a room. Your better nature -- your rational soul -- tells you that nothing good has ever come from attending large social events. But against that better nature stands the Devil, wielding a stick marked 'FOMO.' If you don't go to social events, maybe other people will go and have great times and live fuller lives than you. 'As the dog returns to its vomit, so returns the fool to his folly,' says the Bible. And so you find yourself mumbling thanks to your Uber driver and crossing the threshold of another Bay Area house party. 49) Workers Don't Win Mergers
Source: In These Times
by Hamilton Nolan

"There has always been a fundamental tension in the organized labor world between people who think that unions exist to counteract the self-serving tendencies of businesses, and people who think that unions should copy the self-serving tendencies of businesses. The gap between the view that unions should change capitalism and the view that unions should just help working people get their piece of capitalism is not just fodder for theoretical arguments -- billions of dollars, thousands of jobs, and the entire direction of the post-neoliberalism economy could ride on it. We're seeing that tension painfully demonstrated right now, at the grocery store. Last week, Kroger announced its plan to merge with Albertsons. That merger would create a $25 billion grocery giant that would control more than 15% of the American grocery market, second only to Walmart." (10/19/22)

50) The virtue cure: Institutional fixes won't save us, but better civics might
Source: Niskanen Center
by Robert Saldin & Robert M Eisinger

"The preeminent apprehension informing the Madisonian system and the Constitution was an acknowledgement that individuals are not naturally imbued with the kinds of sensibilities on which democratic republics are predicated. Specifically, the Framers worried that "the people" could quickly devolve into 'the mob' and that demagogues could rise to power by exploiting internal tensions. The key to success, then, was finding a way to empower the people while tempering their susceptibility to passionate, illiberal excess. A major part of their solution was to create a set of carefully structured institutions designed to cool the passions that threatened liberal democracy." (10/18/22)
