1) Argentina: Milei wins friendlier congress in midterms after US regime’s bailout
Source: Washington Post
“President Javier Milei pledged that Argentina’s new Congress would be the most reformist in its history, following his party’s decisive win in legislative elections …. The vote came under global scrutiny after President Donald Trump tied a financial bailout for Argentina to Milei’s performance in the polls. Milei, a close ideological ally of Trump, was elected in 2023 with similar populist messaging, promising to slash Argentina’s bureaucracy, tamp down runaway inflation and take on its political elite. With more than 98 percent of ballots counted, Milei’s La Libertad Avanza party had won more than 40 percent of votes for the lower house compared with slightly over 24 percent for Fuerza Patria, the main opposition. His party also won more than 42 percent of votes for the senate, while Fuerza Patria won about 23 percent.” (10/26/25)

“Bitcoin and the broader crypto market surged over the weekend, fueled by potential de-escalation in the U.S.-China trade war. Bitcoin gained 3.5% on Sunday, rising from $110,960 to $115,400, before cooling slightly. … the report maintained a bullish view for the fourth quarter, with Tiger Research analysts forecasting a $200,000 target for Bitcoin, driven by global liquidity expansion, continued institutional inflows, and the Fed’s rate-cutting stance.” (10/26/25)

3) Netanyahu says, Rubio confirms that Netanyahu controls US regime’s Gaza policy
Source: NBC News
“A number of countries have offered to take part in the international stabilization force expected to operate in Gaza, Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said, even as key details, including its mandate, were still being negotiated. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Sunday that Israel would determine ‘which forces are unacceptable to us.’ ‘This is, of course, acceptable to the United States as well, as its most senior representatives have expressed in recent days,’ Netanyahu told a session of his Cabinet. During a visit to Israel, Rubio said Friday that the force would have to be made up of countries that Israel is ‘comfortable with,’ adding that any potential role for the Palestinian Authority has yet to be determined.” (10/26/25)

“President Trump on Sunday attended a ceremony to formalize a peace agreement between Thailand and Cambodia to put to rest a border dispute, giving the president a platform to bolster his image as a global peacemaker. … Trump was joined by Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul for the event, which formalized an agreement the U.S. president helped broker earlier this year. Malaysia also played a central role in mediating the conflict between Thailand and Cambodia. The agreement covers issues that include withdrawing heavy weapons from the border of the two countries and new guidelines to address accusations of encroachment at the boundary. The agreement also calls for Thailand to release 18 detained Cambodian soldiers.” (10/26/25)

“Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskiy called for new strong sanctions against Russia and its allies after Russian drones killed three and injured 31, including six children, in an overnight air attack on Kyiv. The attack destroyed two high-rise apartment buildings and Kyiv’s Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on the Telegram messaging app that seven of the injured, including two children, were taken to city hospitals. Debris from destroyed Russian air weapons fell onto a nine-storey apartment building in Kyiv’s leafy Desnianskyi district, sparking a fire that engulfed several storeys, the mayor said.”(10/26/25)

6) Sudan: Paramilitary enters army’s last stronghold in Darfur
Source: Washington Post
“Paramilitary fighters from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Sudan have entered the center of El Fashir, the last major city in the western region of Darfur held by the country’s military and allied forces, an adviser to the force said Sunday, raising fears of another bloodbath. Bash Tabiq, an RSF adviser, said Sunday that the forces had taken control of Sudan’s military headquarters in El Fashir, and social media pages loyal to the RSF broadcast images from inside the building. Sudanese military officials told The Washington Post that as of Sunday, the RSF had entered the city and army forces had redeployed to other locations. The RSF has besieged the city since April 2024. ” (10/26/25)

Source: Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
“The donor whose millions of dollars are intended to help pay American troops during the federal government shutdown is the heir to the largely Pittsburgh-made Mellon fortune, according to the New York Times. Timothy Mellon, grandson of former Treasury Secretary Andrew Mellon and great-grandson of Mellon Bank founder Thomas Mellon, gave the U.S. government $130 million that President Donald Trump said this week will help pay members of the military during the shutdown. … It wasn’t immediately clear how Mr. Mellon’s $130 million donation for troops would be distributed among 1.3 million active-duty salaries, the Times reported.” [editor’s note: According to the Constitution, only Congress gets to raise revenues, and they can only be spent per congressional appropriations – TLK] (10/25/25)

Source: BBC News [UK state media]
“The US and China have agreed the framework of a potential trade deal that will be discussed when their respective leaders meet later this week, the US treasury secretary has said. Scott Bessent told the BBC’s US news partner CBS that this included a ‘final deal’ on TikTok’s US operations and a deferral on China’s tightened rare earth minerals controls. He also said he did not anticipate the 100% tariff on [American buyers of] Chinese goods threatened by US President Donald Trump coming into force, while China will resume substantial soybean purchases from the US. Both nations are seeking to avoid further escalation in a trade war between the world’s two largest economies.” (10/26/25)

The 2026 cost-of-living adjustment, knowns as the COLA, represents an increase over last year’s 2.5% figure, but it is lower than the historical average of about 3.7%. Individual retirement benefits will climb an average of about $56 per month, the agency said in a statement. Putin, dressed in camouflage fatigues, could be seen meeting with senior Russian military figures, according to a video released by the Kremlin. The footage showed Gen. Valery Gerasimov, Russia’s chief of general staff, telling the Russian leader that the Burevestnik covered 14,000 kilometers (8,700 miles) in a key test Tuesday. … On Wednesday, Putin directed drills of Russia’s strategic nuclear forces that featured practice missile launches. 17) NM: Judge halts death penalty due to federal shutdown
Source: Associated Press
“A judge in New Mexico has halted a federal death penalty case, citing the pinch of the U.S. government shutdown and a funding shortfall for specialized public defenders that stretches back to the summer. The Trump administration in July announced plans to seek the death penalty for Labar Tsethlikai in connection with a string of kidnappings that involved sexual abuse and two deaths — a hallmark case in efforts to bring justice for missing and murdered individuals in Native American communities. The 52-year-old defendant from Zuni Pueblo has pleaded not guilty. Death penalty cases are especially costly to prepare, and the delay in Tsethlikai’s case provides an early warning about escalating impacts of the shutdown on the judiciary.” (10/24/25)

Telling the truth about tariffs in a $75 million ad campaign. Or, rather, having the late US president Ronald Reagan do so, in his own words …. 22) The Government Shutdown Isn’t Stopping Trump From Amassing “Emergency” Powers

“Usually when we’re in the midst of a government shutdown, I’m in a good mood. Sure, recent shutdowns haven’t accomplished much in terms of shrinking the cost or scope of the federal government in the long run, but it’s nice to walk around feeling a little less governed than usual. But even that small pleasure has turned sour. Yes, fiscal restraint matters. … But the intense acceleration of the quest to aggregate power in the White House is now unambiguously the more immediate threat to liberty.” [for publication 12/25)

When Nathaniel contacted the U.S. Embassy to report the attack, he was told that his own government could not protect him. As independent journalist Jeremy Loffredo — who was recently detained by the IDF for the ‘crime’ of doing journalism without military permission — observed on X: ‘If an American tourist was being chased and attacked by masked & armed government-backed terrorists in any country other than Israel, it would immediately become a major diplomatic crisis with wall-to-wall media coverage.’ He’s absolutely right.” (10/25/25)

Source: The UnPopulist
by Joshua Reed Eakle
“Liberalism’s early victories were bold and sweeping, in part because they had to be. Early liberals, advocating for human dignity and freedom against many different forms of oppression, were radicals within their own contexts. Liberalism, though, is not inherently radical: it does not possess the relentless internal logic of totalitarian systems that need an endless series of “enemies of the people” to war against. Nor does it seek to ceaselessly tear down. Neither is liberalism small-c conservative: At no point does liberalism proclaim itself satisfied with the status quo, content merely to treat politics as a defensive battle. Liberals seek to establish open and liberal societies—which sometimes requires sweeping revolution — but then to settle down to the more mundane tasks of both maintenance and refinement.” (10/25/25)

“If I had to pick a single piece of writing that captures the state of American political culture today, it would be an essay published 80 years ago this month: George Orwell’s ‘Notes on Nationalism.’ … What Orwell meant by nationalism wasn’t ‘patriotism.’ Rather, he wrote: ‘By ‘nationalism’ I mean first of all the habit of assuming that human beings can be classified like insects and that whole blocks of millions or tens of millions of people can be confidently labelled ‘good’ or ‘bad’. But secondly – and this is much more important – I mean the habit of identifying oneself with a single nation or other unit, placing it beyond good and evil and recognizing no other duty than that of advancing its interests.‘ [emphasis mine]” (10/24/25)

“In recent years, Cubans have been forced to endure one of their worst shortages of basic necessities, such as food, medical supplies, and fuel. The fuel shortage has been particularly devastating, as it causes regular power outages, which makes it extremely difficult to work and engage in production, and obstructs the transport and distribution of goods across the island. A number factors have contributed to the current economic crisis in Cuba, including a slow recovery of the tourism industry from covid restrictions and the elimination of the dual currency system, which has resulted in persistently high inflation. However, it is ultimately the American financial and economic blockade that is, by far, the biggest contributing factor to the recent economic crisis, as well as the main issue holding back the economic growth and development of Cuba, more broadly.” (10/25/25)

31) SCOTUS case exposes liberal contradictions on race and segregation
Source: Fox News
by Howard Husock
“The most consequential Supreme Court case involving race in the current session centers on whether Louisiana must, per the Voting Rights Act, have not one, but two, majority Black congressional districts. Progressives fighting a challenge to the current congressional district map — which includes two such districts — are already crying foul, as oral argument seemed to indicate that a majority of the justices are inclined to bar consideration of race in drawing district lines — much as they barred Harvard from considering race in its admissions decisions. For progressives, such a change would, as Politico put it, ‘gut’ the Voting Rights Act, which ended Jim Crow’s outright disenfranchisement, through such means as poll taxes and literacy tests. But, there’s another goal which once commanded liberal support that drawing Black majority districts contravenes: residential racial integration.” (10/24/25)

32) Don’t Bail out Soybeans
Source: Brownstone Institute
by Joel Salatin
“Question: What does a business do when nobody wants its product or services? Answer: It asks for the federal government to bail it out and pay for a product nobody wants. If this sounds silly to you, consider what’s going on with America’s soybean farmers who lost a quarter of their market when China decided to switch sourcing to Brazil and Argentina in the last couple of months. As a farmer myself, my heart breaks for the plummeting prices and the prospect of losing $200 per acre on the 2025 crop. But on the other side of my breaking heart is a desire to hear any soybean farmer say, ‘I’m going to grow something profitable.’ … What kind of economic gymnastics makes soybean farmers think they deserve taxpayer subsidies for a commodity in oversupply?” (10/25/25)

33) How Many Laws Will Trump Break to Make America Predominantly White Again?
Source: Foreign Policy In Focus
by John Feffer
“The Trump administration aspires to deport a million people in its first year of office. The president has also spoken of the more ambitious goal of deporting 15-20 million undocumented people overall, even if that category probably covers only 14 million folks. The discrepancy of a couple million people shouldn’t bother President Donald Trump. He’s happy to deport those with green cards, H-1B visas, and even American citizens. Deporting a million people in a year is a heavy lift. The previous record, 409,849 people, was during the Obama administration, as part of the 1.5 million deportations he conducted in his first term. Trump, no doubt, wants to best Barack Obama in this category, since he’s determined to outshine the former president in every respect, even the dubious ones.” (10/25/25)

34) ICE is building a social media panopticon
Source: The Verge
by Emma Roth
“As Immigration and Customs Enforcement carries out raids across the country, the agency is working rapidly to expand an online surveillance system that could potentially track millions of users on the web. Federal records uncovered by The Lever reveal that ICE is paying $5.7 million to use an AI-powered social media monitoring platform called Zignal Labs, something Will Owen, the communications director at the Surveillance Technology Oversight Project (STOP), calls an ‘assault’ on democracy and free speech. The ‘real-time intelligence’ platform is capable of ingesting and analyzing vast amounts of publicly available data, like social media posts, according to its website. In a pamphlet shared by The Lever, Zignal Labs says it uses machine learning, computer vision, and optical character recognition to analyze more than 8 billion posts per day in over 100 languages.” (10/25/25)

35) User Choice and Jurisdiction: How Regulation Shapes Platform Preferences
Source: Bitcoin.com
by Robin Burns
“I’ve been watching how jurisdictional rules affect digital platforms for some time now, and it’s remarkable how much geography still determines access. What once depended purely on internet availability now hinges on where you live — and what laws apply there. From my perspective, regulation has become a defining factor in the online experience. Some users adapt comfortably within their country’s framework, while others seek flexibility by exploring international platforms. The balance between compliance and choice is more complicated than ever.” (10/25/25)

36) America Haters
Source: The Reframe
by AR Moxon
“I do wonder at what point churches will realize that there can’t possibly be room in their pews for both Jesus — that is, for the prisoner and the sick and the stranger and the outcast — and also room for people who belong to a militarized hate group like the Republican Party, who are actively engaged in excluding and terrorizing and killing all those other sorts of people, or (more likely) in hiring people to do it for them, so they can feel safe while they wait for heaven. Whenever I express this belief, I’m reminded by well-meaning Christians that the revolutionary and the tax-collecting Roman collaborator both ran with Jesus in unity and harmony, but I also recall the tax collector left his corrupt and collaborationist business behind.” (10/25/25)

In the Commonwealth of Virginia, we have the recent revelations of Democratic candidate for attorney general, Jay Jones, sending text messages to a colleague in 2022 wishing that someone would put ‘two bullets’ in the head of then-Republican Speaker of the House of Delegates, Todd Gilbert. … Then, in the state of New Jersey, we have Democratic gubernatorial candidate Rebecca Michelle ‘Mikie’ Sherrill facing questions over the circumstances of the discipline she received while a Naval Academy midshipman, which reportedly prevented her from walking with her class at graduation.” (10/25/25)

38) How Social Security Makes Us Poorer
Source: Independent Institute
by Scott Beyer
“Social Security (SS) was created in 1935 with noble intentions. The idea was that current working Americans would pay into a shared public fund, providing income for retirees who could no longer earn a paycheck, while collecting their own retirement in the future from the next generation. It was meant to be a safety net — a collective insurance policy that ensured no elderly person would be left destitute. Politicians such as Franklin Roosevelt sold it as a stabilizing force befitting of a moral society. … But the SS system has quietly made Americans poorer. By removing trillions of dollars from private investment and placing them in the hands of a slow, bureaucratic system that earns virtually no return, the program has robbed the average worker of what could have been generational wealth.” (10/24/25)

39) Magic Mamdani Theory
Source: The Weekly Dish
by Andrew Sullivan
“It is not hard to see the appeal of Zohran Mamdani. He is, after all, not Andrew Cuomo — another corrupt, old, Democratic sexual harasser who’s already spent years in power and thinks he’s entitled to be mayor because of his last name. He doesn’t appear steeped in petty corruption like Mayor Adams. He’s not as obviously nutty as Sliwa seems to be. And he has done politics, pace Ezra, the right way: listening to the other side, earning people’s votes one by one, talking to people on the street, and, of course, mastering our new collective replacement for civil discourse: 30-second videos on TikTok. … His only problem is not being female — but since he denies that the category of female exists, no big deal I suppose. He will give the MSNBC/Bulwark crowd a new lease on self-righteousness.” (10/24/25)

“In trying to understand the moral paralysis that undermines the revolutionary energy so essential to our collective survival — an energy that has no real place within the narrow ideological confines of democratic realism — we find ourselves returning, almost reflexively, to the Marxist concept of alienation. 41) Niemöller Was Wrong: When They Came for the Communists, People Didn’t Just Stay Silent
Source: Common Dreams
by Laura Flanders
“It’s one of the most rousing calls to conscience to come out of the 20th century. I’m thinking of Martin Niemöller’s ‘First they came for the communists’. You know how it goes. It begins, ‘First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out because I was not a communist.’ And it ends, ‘Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.’ It’s a powerful statement, and you’ll see it on T-shirts and posters and placards at demonstrations. But when you actually look at our history, it’s not just that good people didn’t speak out. It’s that many Americans threw other Americans under the bus. The story of the Danish king who wore a yellow star in solidarity with Jewish Danes during World War II is apocryphal. It never happened.” (10/25/25)

42) A Deep Dive into Liquid Modernity
Source: Law & Liberty
by Brena M Hafera
“Angela Franks’s Body and Identity: A History of the Empty Self illuminates how our culture came to be unrecognizable to so many. As she tells it, the changes came about gradually and then all at once. It is a careful and vast intellectual history, engaging notable thinkers like Aristotle, Augustine, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, but also novelists like Jane Austen and C. S. Lewis, to explain the observable contemporary incoherence surrounding the self, the body, and identity. That incoherence, Franks demonstrates, is a primary cause of our current malaise. This deeply considered work is a welcome contribution to the present literature on the body, gender ideology, and the self.” (10/24/25)

“So, here we are on the precipice. Not just CounterPunch, but the country, even the 30% who refuse to believe it. Indeed, we may well be off the precipice, suspended in air above the chasm, like Wile E. Coyote, as the icy grip of gravity takes hold, pulling us down into political darkness. Is that dark pit we’re being dragged into ‘fascism?’ I’m reluctant to use that word to describe the retrograde policies and savage tactics of the Trump regime. There’s no reason to import a European ideology from the last century to explain a domestic political pathology that can be traced back to the origins of the Republic. In fact, what if we’re entering a dispensation that’s even worse than ‘fascism?’ Worse, you say? What could be worse than fascism?” (10/24/25)

44) No need for hysteria over federal cuts to homeless housing
Source: Orange County Register
by Steven Greenhut
“The upset is palpable. News reports that the Trump administration is planning to cut state grants to build permanent housing for homeless people has led state officials and homeless activists to claim that the likely decision will send thousands of people back on the streets just as California is turning the corner on this massive problem. … It’s time to take the proverbial chill pill. Yes, I believe the homelessness situation is a travesty and addressing it is a legitimate government function — for the sake of people living on the streets and the rest of us who want to reclaim public parks and sidewalks. But dig a little deeper and the cuts might not be as troubling as expected.” (10/24/25)

45) Dems’ Obamacare lies reveal how flimsy their government shutdown excuses actually are
Source: New York Post
by staff
“Strip away the lies about Obamacare subsidies set to expire this year, and Democrats’ main excuse for shutting the government goes up in smoke. Above all else, Dems claim they’re looking to protect health care, that expiring Bamcare subsidies will send premiums soaring and cost many their coverage. The truth? Premiums are expected to rise by $1,665, or 20%, on average, a Paragon Health Institute study found — yet the expiring subsidies account for only four of those percentage points, or just $333. Fact is, most ObamaCare subsidies are not expiring. What’s set to vanish is merely the added cash Democrats in Congress agreed to pay insurers (using taxpayer money) during COVID. That’s it.” (10/25/25)

46) How “anti-woke” laws and cancel culture combine to chill classroom speech
Source: Expression
by Michael Hurley
“Over the past several years, some politicians have tried to ban or limit discussion of controversial ideas in higher education, particularly those related to critical race theory, gender identity, and diversity, equity, and inclusion. FIRE has been on the front lines of this fight, opposing bills that target classroom speech and challenging those that become law. We’ve warned legislators that attempts to ban ideas from the college classroom are unconstitutional. As the Supreme Court explained, the First Amendment ‘does not tolerate laws that cast a pall of orthodoxy over the classroom.’” (10/24/25)

“[A]lthough republics are limited in power and have other features far superior to democracies, they are still mandatory human government, and only marginally better than unbridled democracy. As TPOL has recently stated, we need no kings, no presidents, no chairmen, no prime ministers. And we do not need people who claim that The People or a majority or a plurality of people can have the power of a king or prime minister or any other ‘ruler.’ As Mama Liberty pointed out, we have a hard time governing our individual selves, let alone other people. And as TPOL also points out, the intelligence of a committee (or any significant group of people) is calculated by taking the IQ of the smartest person in the group and dividing it by the total number of persons (or feet, or fingers) in the group.” (10/24/25)

49) Trump’s Faltering Economy
Source: The American Prospect
by Robert Kuttner
“The Consumer Price Index for September increased at an annual rate of 3.0 percent, the Labor Department reported this morning. This was an increase from 2.9 percent in August, 2.7 percent in July, and around 2.3 percent this past spring, before Trump’s perverse policies began to bite. Inflation of 3 percent doesn’t seem too bad, but it conceals a great deal of softness in the economy. That weakness will be sufficiently worrisome for the Fed to likely proceed with its planned quarter-point rate cut when the Federal Open Market Committee meets next week. But after that, both inflation and unemployment are likely to worsen, leaving the Fed with no good options. On the inflation front, Trump’s on-again, off-again tariffs have yet to fully bite, but their impact is likely to increase over time.” (10/24/25)
