1)  UK: MPs demand answers from Johnson on Downing Street party
Source: BBC News [UK state media]

"Conservative and opposition MPs are demanding answers from Boris Johnson over whether he attended a drinks event in the No 10 garden during lockdown. Labour's deputy leader Angela Rayner said that if he was there, and he lied about it, his position is 'untenable.' And Tory MPs have been expressing their anger and concern over the reports. Mr Johnson will appear at Prime Minister's Questions at noon -- his first public appearance since details of the May 2020 event emerged. The prime minister has so far declined to say whether he attended the gathering, but witnesses have told the BBC both he and his wife were among 30 people at the drinks. ... Scottish Conservative leader Douglas Ross said Mr Johnson must quit if he was found to have broken Covid rules." (01/12/22)

2)  WHO: More than half of Europe likely to catch Omicron COVID infection within two months
Source: CBS News

"More than half of the people in Europe are on track to contract the Omicron coronavirus variant in the next two months if infections continue at current rates, the World Health Organization said on Tuesday. Speaking at a press conference, regional director Hans Kluge warned that the Omicron variant represented a 'new west-to-east tidal wave sweeping across' the European region." (01/11/22)

3)  Dangerous quack whines about on-target criticisms by opportunistic pol
Source: US News & World Report

"Dr. Anthony Fauci, the top U.S. infectious disease official, on Tuesday accused Republican Senator Rand Paul of spreading misinformation that has sparked threats of violence against him and his family while distracting the public from the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. At a Senate health committee hearing, Fauci had his latest heated back-and-forth with Paul, a lawmaker from Kentucky and supporter of former President Donald Trump. Fauci said Paul was focused on misinformed attacks rather than oversight aimed at addressing the health care crisis that has so far killed more than 800,000 people in the United States. Paul's website accuses Fauci of 'ignoring good advice, and lying about everything from masks to the contagiousness of the virus' and on Tuesday the senator accused Fauci of smearing other scientists who disagreed with him. Fauci said Paul was distorting the truth."

4)  Cardona solicited NSBA letter comparing protesting parents to domestic terrorists
Source: Fox News

"Education Secretary Miguel Cardona solicited the much-criticized letter from the National School Boards Association that compared protesting parents to domestic terrorists, according to an email exchange reviewed by Fox News. The email exchange indicates Cardona was more involved with the letter's creation than previously known. President Biden's Department of Justice relied on the NSBA letter, which suggested using the Patriot Act against parents, in creating its own memo directing the FBI to mobilize in support of local education officials. In the Oct. 5 email, NSBA Secretary-Treasurer Kristi Swett recounted that NSBA interim CEO Chip Slaven 'told the officers he was writing a letter to provide information to the White House, from a request by Secretary Cardona.' Previous emails had revealed that the NSBA was in contact with the White House and Justice Department in the weeks before it publicly sent the letter." (01/11/22)

5)  Red Cross Declares First-Ever Blood Shortage Crisis in US
Source: Common Dreams

"Due to problems tied to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the American Red Cross on Tuesday declared its first-ever national blood shortage crisis, warning that already, 'doctors have been forced to make difficult decisions about who receives blood transfusions and who will need to wait.' The plea for 'critically needed' blood and platelet donations comes during National Blood Donor Month and amid a surge in U.S. Covid-19 cases driven by the highly contagious Omicron variant. 'Every community in America needs blood on a daily basis,' said Dr. Pampee Young, the Red Cross' chief medical officer, in a statement. ... The organization, which supplies 40% of the nation's blood, has seen a 10% decline in donors since the beginning of the pandemic, which has also caused blood drive cancellations and staffing challenges." 6)  Senate Democrats push regime for deportation protection for millions of Central Americans
Source: Fox News

"Senate Democrats are urging the Biden administration to use its authority to protect what is estimated could be millions more Central Americans from deportation -- as Democratic lawmakers and activists continue to look for ways to grant amnesty and other protections to illegal [sic] immigrants. In a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and Secretary of State Antony Blinken, 33 Democrats led by Sen. Bob Menendez, D-NJ, and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer urge the administration to redesignate El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and make a new designation for Guatemala. 'It is our assessment that the severe damage caused by back-to-back hurricanes just over one year ago, combined with extreme drought conditions, and the social and economic crises exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, warrant such an action by the administration,' they wrote." 7)  Uganda: Regime charges political prisoner with "disturbing" Museveni's "peace"
Source: ABC News

"Ugandan authorities on Tuesday brought criminal charges against an author critical of the government whose ongoing detention has sparked concern at home and abroad. Kakwenza Rukirabashaija, who has been detained since Dec. 28, was charged with two counts of 'offensive communication' for his alleged efforts on Twitter to 'disturb the peace' of President Yoweri Museveni and his son, Lt. Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who commands the East African country's infantry forces. Rukirabashaija has since been taken to a maximum-security prison outside the capital, Kampala, according to police. But Rukirabashaija's lawyer, Eron Kiiza, told The Associated Press that his client had been 'secretly remanded' after being charged without notice to defense attorneys." (01/11/22)

8)  Biden to back Senate scam to pass voting rights [sic] bill
Source: US News & World Report

"President Joe Biden will use a speech in Georgia to endorse changing Senate rules that have stalled voting rights legislation, saying it's time to choose 'democracy over autocracy' [sic]. But some civil rights groups won't be there, in protest of what they say is administration inaction. As he turns to his current challenge, Biden on Tuesday is also paying tribute to civil rights battles past, visiting Atlanta's historic Ebenezer Baptist Church, where the late Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. once held forth from the pulpit .... With Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., setting next Monday's Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a deadline to either pass voting legislation or consider revising the rules around the chamber's filibuster blocking device, Biden was expected to evoke the memories of the U.S. Capitol riot a year ago in more forcefully aligning himself with the voting rights effort." Source: Independent [UK]

"A Bernie Sanders-backed group has launched a long-shot bid to keep North Carolina Representative Madison Cawthorn off the ballot in this year's midterms by claiming his alleged support for the 6 January insurrection [sic] renders him ineligible to serve in Congress. A petition by a group of Tarheel State voters who are making the challenge to Mr Cawthorn's eligibility was filed with the North Carolina state board of elections last week as part of a campaign progressive groups Free Speech for People and Our Revolution are staging in hopes of using an obscure [sic] section of the 14th Amendment to keep a number of GOP figures from seeking reelection." 10) Kremlin: Not much optimism after Russia-US talks on Ukraine
Source: San Francisco Chronicle

"The Kremlin said Tuesday the security talks with the U.S. amid tensions over Ukraine have given little reason for optimism, adding that Russia would wait for the outcome of other meetings this week before deciding whether it's worthwhile to continue negotiations. The U.S. envoy to NATO set a tough tone for the next round of talks with Moscow, ruling out any concessions on the alliance's eastward expansion amid a Russian troops buildup near Ukraine. 'We will not allow anyone to slam NATO's open-door policy shut,' said U.S. Ambassador Julianne Smith. At Monday's Geneva talks, Moscow insisted on guarantees to halt NATO's expansion and even roll back the military alliance's deployments in Eastern Europe, while Washington firmly rejected the demands as a nonstarter. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov noted that while the talks were 'open, comprehensive and direct,' he emphasized that it's the result that matters." (01/11/22)

11) Kazakhstan: Tokayev says Russian invaders to start withdrawing
Source: France 24 [French state media]

"A Russian-led military bloc will begin withdrawing its troops from Kazakhstan in two days' time after fulfilling its main mission of [saving the regime from a revolt by uppity serfs in] the Central Asian country after serious unrest, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said on Tuesday. Tokayev told parliament he was appointing a long-serving career public servant Alikhan Smailov as prime minister and spoke of initiatives to narrow the wealth gap, raise taxes on the mining sector, and eliminate irregularities in state procurement. Tokayev, 68, last week asked the Moscow-led Collective Security Treaty Organisation (CSTO) to send in troops at the peak of what he later said was an attempted coup d'etat whose unnamed instigators had plunged half of the oil-rich nation's territory into violence." 12) CA: Two cops fired for chasing Snorlax instead of robbers
Source: BBC News [UK state media]

"Two Los Angeles police officers were fired for chasing Pokemon rather than fleeing robbers, court documents show. The pair were parked nearby when a radio call came in for officers to respond to a shop robbery. But a review of their in-car camera footage showed they had been playing Pokemon Go and chose to pursue a nearby Snorlax (a relatively rare catch), instead of providing back-up. The pair denied playing the game but were sacked after an investigation. Details of the case emerged when the most recent documents about their appeal (which was dismissed) were spotted by Axios." 13) IL: Chicago teachers' union leaders OK plan to resume government daycare operations
Source: WGN News

"Chicago schools are poised to resume classes after leaders of the Chicago Teachers Union tentatively approved a plan with the district over COVID-19 safety protocols. Both sides had been locked in a standoff that canceled classes for four days in the nation's third-largest district. The full deal, which would have students in class Wednesday and teachers a day earlier, still requires approval by the union's full 25,000 members. ... The Chicago Teachers Union voted last week to revert to online instruction and told teachers not to show up in person at schools as negotiations continued. District officials argued that schools are safe, a return to remote-only learning isn't a good option, and blocked teachers from accessing online teaching systems. Meanwhile, families scrambled to adjust just two days after students returned to classrooms after winter break." (01/11/22)

14) China: Regime locks down third city, raising affected to 20 million
Source: San Francisco Chronicle

"A third Chinese city has locked down its residents because of a COVID-19 outbreak, raising the number confined to their homes in China to about 20 million people. The lockdown of Anyang, home to 5.5 million people, was announced late Monday after two cases of the omicron variant were reported. Residents are not allowed to go out and stores have been ordered shut except those selling necessities. Another 13 million people have been locked down in Xi'an for nearly three weeks, and 1.1 million more in Yuzhou for more than a week. It wasn't clear how long the lockdown of Anyang would last .... The lockdowns are the broadest since the shutting down of Wuhan and most of the rest of Hubei province in early 2020 at the start of the pandemic." (01/11/22)

Source: Al Jazeera [Qatar state media]

"An air attack in Ethiopia's northern region of Tigray on Monday killed at least 17 people, mostly women, and wounded dozens in the town of Mai Tsebri, two aid workers have told Reuters news agency, citing local authorities and witnesses. Monday's attack came on the day US President Joe Biden in a phone call raised concerns with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed about civilian casualties and suffering caused by air attacks. At least 56 people were killed and 30 injured, including some children, in a drone attack on a camp for displaced people in Tigray on Friday. A report by the zonal administration said women at a flour mill made up most of the casualties in Monday's drone attack, a source who saw the report told The Associated Press news agency." "Robert Durst, the wealthy New York real estate heir and failed fugitive dogged for decades with suspicion in the disappearance and deaths of those around him before he was convicted last year of killing his best friend, has died. He was 78. Durst died of natural causes Monday in a hospital outside the California prison where he was serving a life sentence, according to the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. Durst had been held in a hospital lockup in Stockton due to a litany of ailments. Durst was convicted in September of shooting Susan Berman at point-blank range at her Los Angeles home in 2000. "The Texas mom who was charged after her COVID-positive son was found in the trunk of her car at a testing site has received support from the community. Sarah Beam, who is a teacher at Cypress Falls High School in Houston, is being described as 'the best teacher ever' and 'a teacher with a heart of gold' in signs hanging outside her home. The bright signs also read, 'We appreciate you,' and 'your students have your back,' WFAA reported. Beam was charged with felony endangering a child following a Jan. 3 incident where her 13-year-old son was found in the trunk of her car at a drive-thru testing site. Beam allegedly told a health official at the testing site that her son had previously tested positive for COVID and she put him inside the trunk to prevent her from getting exposed again, according to the complaint." He was 65. European Council President Charles Michel called Sassoli a 'sincere and passionate European. We already miss his human warmth, his generosity, his friendliness and his smile.' No details were provided in a tweet by Sassoli's spokesperson, Roberto Cuillo. Sassoli, a socialist, had been hospitalized since Dec. 26 because of abnormal functioning of his immune system, Cuillo said in a statement released the day before Sassoli's death." (01/11/22)

19) Elvis Costello asks radio stations not to play "Oliver's Army"
Source: BBC News [UK state media]

"Elvis Costello has revealed he will no longer perform his biggest hit, Oliver's Army, and has also asked radio stations to stop playing the song. Written about the conflict in Northern Ireland, the lyrics use a racial slur to describe a British soldier. 'That's what my grandfather was called in the British army -- it's historically a fact,' he told The Telegraph. 'But people hear that word... and accuse me of something that I didn't intend.' Released in 1979, Oliver's Army was played unedited on radio stations for decades -- but as the word became increasingly taboo, many took the decision to bleep the lyrics. On his last tour, Costello rewrote the song to address being 'cut down by the censors,' singling out the BBC, which attracted criticism for editing the song in 2013." "In a medical first, doctors have transplanted a pig heart into a patient, in a last-ditch effort to save his life. And three days after the highly experimental surgery, a Maryland hospital said Monday that the patient is doing well. While it's too soon to know if the operation really will work, it marks a step in the decades-long quest to one day use animal organs for life-saving transplants. Doctors at the University of Maryland Medical Center, near Baltimore, say the transplant showed that a heart from a genetically modified animal can function in the human body without immediate rejection." 21) Hawks Still Don't Understand the Limits of American Power
Source: Eunomia
by Daniel Larison

"Reading [Walter Russell] Mead columns is like opening a time capsule from the mid-2000s. The references may be more recent, but the mindset of the writer remains mired in the hubris of the Bush era. It used to be that almost every hawkish pundit and analyst viewed the world in this simplistic, ridiculous way, but there are still some, including Mead, that interpret every undesirable or neutral event as a 'failure' of American leadership and/or a setback for the cause of democracy. ... If an adversary does something we don't like, it is because they are insufficiently in awe of the president's resolve. The possibility that some things are beyond America's reach or that things happen for reasons unrelated to how American power is perceived continues to elude people with this worldview." (01/11/22)

22) Missouri Governor Mike Parson Tries to Stick it Where the Sun Don't Shine
Source: Garrison Center
by Thomas L Knapp

"'Frothy eloquence neither convinces nor satisfies me,' Missouri congressman Willard Duncan Vandiver said in an 1899 speech: 'I am from Missouri. You have got to show me.' Note to Missouri governor Mike Parson: You're getting this 'Show-Me State' business all wrong. Parson tried to charge Elad Gross, a candidate for state attorney general,  $3,618 for documents Gross requested under the state's Sunshine Law, claiming more than 90 hours of required 'research and processing' at $40 per hour. The 'processing' involved having attorneys redact information from the requested documents. The state's Supreme Court ruled against Parson last June. ... Now Parson's asking the state legislature to amend the Sunshine Law so that he can keep more government documents secret and charge more for handing over such information as it might happen to please him to show." 23) Ending nation's polarization begins with understanding First Amendment
Source: The Hill
by Jeffrey M McCall

"A key reason for the nation's polarization can be found in the newly released Knight Foundation study on free expression. It is clear that too many Americans fail to understand the importance of free expression and the functional interdependence required to implement that basic human right. Basically, citizens get to express themselves in exchange for allowing other citizens the same freedom. Further, the Constitution's First Amendment prohibits the government from restricting the citizens' broad expression rights. The Knight study shows too many Americans are oblivious to these notions that are essential in a free society. ... A disappointing 26 percent of respondents believe 'government should prohibit a person from sharing political views that are offensive to some.'" (01/11/22)

24) The Power to Protect Is the Power to Control
Source: Tenth Amendment Center
by Mike Maharrey

"Most people think the federal government should 'guarantee' their rights. In other words, they think the U.S. government should police state and local governments to ensure that they don't violate their rights. Practically speaking, the federal government does this through the 'incorporation doctrine.' This Supreme Court-created legal principle applies the Bill of Rights to the states through the 14th Amendment. The incorporation doctrine provides a legal pathway for people to sue over rights violations in federal court. ... But this was never intended by the founding generation." 25) The fairy tale that is the high-speed rail project
Source: Orange County Register
by Susan Shelley

"In fairy tale lore, the story is told of a troll who lived under a bridge and tried to make a meal ticket out of anyone who wanted to cross it. California has greatly improved on this scam by first making a meal ticket out of the taxpayers who are forced to pay for the construction of the bridge, and then by endlessly spending money on it even though the bridge doesn't actually go anywhere. For example, Gov. Gavin Newsom's new budget proposal calls for another $4.2 billion to finish a 119-mile segment of the California high-speed rail project in the Central Valley. Voters approved almost $10 billion in bonds back in 2008 to build a high-speed rail line between San Francisco and Los Angeles and were promised that it would be built without a tax increase and operated without a public subsidy." "In the incessant media discussion about whether inflation is transitory there is a big elephant in the room about which all are silent. Perhaps strangely some do not see it. "The Chinese communists are hoisting the U.S. government on its own petard, at least with respect to Julian Assange, the Australian citizen who, with WikiLeaks, disclosed war crimes committed by the U.S. national-security establishment. For decades stretching back to the Cold War, U.S. officials have reveled in leveling condemnations and criticisms of Red China for its human-rights abuses and denial of civil liberties. What has always amazed me is that the Chinese haven't responded by pointing out the rank hypocrisy of the U.S. government, given the horrific human-rights abuses and denial of civil liberties long exercised by the Pentagon, the CIA, and the NSA, especially with their assassination program, torture program, kidnapping program, indefinite detention, denial of speedy trial, denial of trial by jury, and secret mass surveillance. That's all changed with the case of Julian Assange." (01/11/22)

29) Wishful thinking one year after January 6
Source: Niskanen Center
by David Dagan

"The anniversary of the January 6 attack on the Capitol once again amplified warnings that Republicans' embrace of Donald Trump's Big Lie poses a serious threat to our democracy. Still, Wall Street Journal columnist Holman Jenkins, Jr. has reassuring news: Far from representing an authoritarian menace, the GOP's narrative of rampant electoral fraud is another political circus that will soon pass. In a column mocking the media's 'remembrances-cum-worry-porn,' Jenkins declares that 'the Trump election big lie is likely to fail and dwindle in relevance' because of a combination of political self-interest, bureaucratic integrity, and public skepticism. This is like watching a band of arsonists pour gasoline all around your block and counting on them to control the fire when the match is lit. It is also exactly what many of Jenkins'[s] readers want to hear." (01/11/22)

30) When Faking It Doesn't Make It: Lessons From Elizabeth Holmes, Part 1
Source: American Consequences
by Kim Iskyan

"'Fake it till you make it' may be solid advice if you struggle with self-confidence, feel like you're underqualified, or are consumed by self-doubt. It's a command to imitate competence (via supreme self-assuredness and overwhelming optimism) in the hopes of achieving your desired result (and/or attaining some actual aptitude) before you plummet to earth, Wile E. Coyote-chasing-Road-Runner-off-a-cliff style. However, 'fake it till you make it' is a terrible motto to tattoo on the inside of your eyelids if, in fact, you do not know what you're doing -- and are actually in way over your head (and thus you lack self-confidence and are plagued by self-doubt, because, well, you're completely and undeniably unqualified). Or, even worse, if you're in a situation where 'faking it' can lead to something disastrous for yourself and others." (01/11/22)

31) Australia's Giant Green Gamble on Solar Energy Toys
Source: Heartland Institute
by Viv Forbes

"Intermittent 'green' energy forces coal and gas plants to operate at full capacity to cover peak demands around sunrise and sunset, but to wind back or shut down when solar energy pours into the system around midday. Recently in just one week in South Australia (Australia's green energy guinea pig), electricity generation went from 'over 130% renewables to less than 4%, renewables with everything in between.' Despite South Australia being home to 'the biggest battery in the world,' the energy regulator has been forced to lease diesel back-up generators and to order gas-fired plants to stand by in case the wind suddenly drops -- this encourages mechanical and financial breakdowns, and high electricity costs." [editor's note: All energy is "intermittent," as anyone who's ever lived through a power outage can attest – TLK] (01/11/22)

32) Biden's Plan To Make At-Home COVID-19 Tests More Expensive and Harder To Find
Source: Reason
by Elizabeth Nolan Brown

"Seriously? With a new plan for at-home COVID-19 testing, the U.S. continues to embrace the most convoluted and costly approach to health care. On Monday, the Biden administration announced that health insurance plans must cover at least eight at-home tests per member per month. In some countries, COVID-19 test approval has been swift and many companies have been allowed to make tests, spurring robust competition and driving down prices while ensuring there are plenty of tests to go around. Other countries have made free tests available directly from government sources -- a plan not exactly desirable from a fiscal or free market standpoint, but at least theoretically capable of making sure people actually have access to tests. In contrast, the U.S. has chosen the worst of all worlds, in effect making COVID-19 tests both limited and expensive." (01/11/221)

33) Why Deficits Matter
Source: American Institute for Economic Research
by Alexander William Salter

"The US is experiencing the strongest price pressures in 40 years. Financial and economic commentators are searching frantically for the culprit. Many on the right blame massive budget deficits. Are government budget deficits responsible for inflation? The logic is simple: when governments run deficits, they inject purchasing power into the economy. This stimulates total spending on goods and services, what economists call 'aggregate demand.' When aggregate demand rises, production and prices go up. The result is more stuff selling at higher prices. But there's a problem here. If you blame fiscal policy for rising prices, you also have to credit it for increased output." (01/11/22)

34) Guantanamo Is an Indelible Stain on America; Biden Must Close It Once and for All
Source: Common Dreams
by Agnes Callamard

"At a recent demonstration outside the White House calling for the closure of the US military prison at the Guantanamo Bay naval base, a teenager approached a colleague to ask what the protest was all about. He told her he had never heard of the detention facility. It's been 20 years and four presidential administrations since Guantanamo opened, but for those born since then its terrifying stories sound more like the plot of a fictitious horror film. It is a disgraceful legacy we simply cannot pass on to future generations. Opened in response to the September 11 attacks, Guantanamo has held almost 780 Muslim men and boys. Before their indefinite detention in Guantanamo, many were abducted, disappeared and brutally tortured in US-run secret prisons or by so-called allies in the 'war on terror,' In Guantanamo, they were tortured, very few charged with crimes, and none given a fair trial." 35) Pelosi "Insider" Investments Expose Inherent Conflicts of Interest
Source: Independent Institute
by Craig Eyermann

"Should elected members of Congress be allowed to invest in things whose value depends upon how the government spends money? Or whose growth prospects depend upon how government rules and regulations affect them? Since members of Congress have direct influence over both these things, "no" is the obvious answer to both questions. That's because there are clear and inherent conflicts of interest involved. Politicians are able to shape legislation and spending bills in ways that influence the value of their investments. As political insiders, they can minimize their risk of losses and transform their investments into sure-fire bets. An example of that may be found in the stock market investment portfolio owned by House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Since January 2019, Pelosi's portfolio has outperformed the S&P 500, with $100 invested in 2019 rising to $196 versus $173 in the S&P index." (01/11/22)

36) Inflation isn't Biden's fault. And he can't solve it, either.
Source: Washington Post
by Jennifer Rubin

"Biden isn't really claiming corporate greed is causing inflation, although he might be exaggerating the role his initiatives will have to reduce inflation. Inflation isn't a Biden problem (recall the trillions spent under the previous administration) or even an American problem; it's the result of an economy that screeched to a halt and then shifted into high gear. The way to manage systemic inflation is and always has been through responsible monetary policy." (01/11/22)

37) CDC Director Almost Admits Failure
Source: Brownstone Institue
by Vinay Prasad

"Yesterday the CDC director Rochelle Walensky tweeted that we must protect people at highest risk of bad outcomes from COVID19. The tweet is a subtle shift from prior messaging, and likely reflects her realization that the pipe-dream of ZeroCovid -- eradication of the virus -- is dead. Omicron makes it clear, COVID19 will not go away. Even more, holding society hostage to slow spread is no longer a tenable policy choice. We will have to return to living life, and balancing important societal priorities while minimizing the harms of COVID19. Alpha and delta variant thinking won't help us for Omicron. ... The CDC director's tweet won't settle all the COVID19 debates, but it is an admission that our current policies have failed and must be abandoned." (01/11/22)

38) The pandemic has exposed an educational system in crisis
Source: Fox News
by Greg Gutfeld

"It's one of the great moments in education. Apparently, a mother in Texas has been accused of putting her son, who tested positive for COVID in the trunk of her car to prevent her from being exposed to his virus. So that's kind of awesome: throwing your kid in the trunk of your car like a set of jumper cables. ... Now she faces charges of child endangerment. ... But it was arriving at the COVID testing site with her 13-year-old boy in the back of her car, that raised some concerns. According to the arrest warrant, she brought her son to the drive-through site told the director of health services that her brat was in the trunk so she wouldn't get exposed while driving. When the police were alerted the kid was in the trunk, he was freed unharmed." (01/11/22)

39) Is Connecticut Copying Andrew Cuomo's Disastrous Nursing Home Policy? Yes and No.
Source: Foundation for Economic Education
by Jon Miltimore

"'Nursing homes are being asked to accept COVID-positive admissions from hospitals, according to a new guidance from the Department of Public Health, even as positivity rates within nursing homes are increasing sharply,' the Hartford Courant reported Thursday. ... If Connecticut's policy sounds familiar, it should. It bears striking resemblance to former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo's policy that forced nursing homes to admit recently discharged COVID-19 patients even if they were still COVID positive. ... Cuomo eventually reversed his policy, but it still ended up costing hundreds or even thousands of lives. Cuomo's attempt to conceal these deaths, along with accusations of sexual misconduct, eventually led to his political downfall. Even with the presence of vaccines, why anyone would want to copy Cuomo's disastrous policy is anyone's guess. But there seems to be a small but crucial difference with the policy in Connecticut." 40) A Porcupine Peace Plan: How An Independent New Hampshire Could Increase US Security
Source: Libertarian Institute
by Dave Ridley

"New Hampshire already has a long history of example-setting. But by striving for independence -- and a more humane world security protocol -- its citizens may be able to do something better. With your help, and the careful placement of a new idea on the geopolitical board, maybe our tiny new nation could even stop a world war. NH independence proponents make a simple case. The FedGov, they say, has bloated beyond the point where normal individuals can meaningfully oppose its atrocities with conventional civics. They point to the successes of Estonian and British independence movements as well as the global trend toward 'smaller nations.' In 1900 there were roughly 60 countries in the world. Now there are about 200. Meanwhile, thanks to these and other national divorces, the harm-inflicting capacity of various empires is less than it would be if they were still full-sized." (01/11/22)

41) False Equivalence and the Destruction of American Democracy
Source: The American Prospect
by Robert Kuttner

"Donald Trump's signature strategy is the use of false equivalence. He did everything he could to steal the 2020 election, including fomenting a violent coup. Despite the rulings of more than 60 state judges, many of them Republicans, rejecting claims of election fraud, Trump's main story is that it was Biden and the Democrats who stole the election. He importuned state officials to rig the vote count. His contends it was Democrats who promoted improper voting. Trump is a master of making up facts; his favorite slogan when challenged is 'Fake news!' You get the idea. On the anniversary of the January 6th attempted coup, the respectable right-wing press tried to have it both ways." (01/11/22)

42) China has been a failure at hegemony, so let's just chill
Source: Responsible Statecraft
by John Mueller

"Many in the U.S. foreign policy establishment and elsewhere are sounding an alarm over concerns that, as China develops, it will become the dominant power in its region, a 'hegemon' that will have too much 'influence' there and do damage to U.S. security interests. ... Accordingly, as it is often suggested, military hardware must be deployed to somehow keep that from happening. However, to a degree, we already know what Chinese 'hegemony' looks like. Over the last decade, China has established a major military and especially economic presence, and it has tried to convert this condition into influence. These experiments in hegemony -- China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) which has stressed construction loans to countries across Eurasia, and its rather belligerent 'wolf diplomacy' antics -- have substantially foundered and have, if anything, proved to be counterproductive." 44) What Happened to the Eviction Tsunami?

"Since the pandemic began, housing experts (including one of the authors of this article) have been predicting that the pandemic's economic fallout would produce an eviction 'tsunami' that could put as many as 40 million people out of their homes. The experts are still waiting. ... When the national moratorium lifted, housing experts, renter advocates and policymakers braced for a surge of evictions. Now, four months later, evictions have increased, but data suggests that a tsunami has yet to materialize. Some still think one is coming, as courts begin working through a backlog of eviction filings, but according to Eviction Lab, the country's most comprehensive tracker of eviction data, evictions in most places are nearly 40 percent below the historical average." "[US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken] apparently couldn't resist an opportunity to bash Russia. Cautioning the Kazakh government, he observed that 'One lesson of recent history is that once Russians are in your house, it's sometimes very difficult to get them to leave.' Given Washington's track record over multiple decades of similar behavior, Blinken was very far out on a fragile rhetorical limb, and Russian foreign ministry officials quickly sawed it off. 'If Antony Blinken loves history lessons so much, then he should take the following into account: when Americans are in your house, it can be difficult to stay alive and not be robbed or raped,' the ministry said on its social media channel. A ministry spokesman specifically cited Vietnam and Iraq as countries in which prolonged, horribly destructive US military occupations had taken place." (01/11/22)

48) Covid authoritarianism is not a virtue
Source: spiked
by Fraser Myers

"In Covid terms, Wales is currently the sick man of Britain. When compared with Scotland and England it has the highest rate of Covid cases in the past seven days. So it was more than a little curious to witness Welsh first minister Mark Drakeford emerge from his shed last week -- twice -- to denounce the UK government for failing to get a grip on Covid. On Friday, at a Covid press conference, Drakeford branded England a 'global outlier' for having fewer restrictions than the devolved nations and much of Europe. ... For the likes of Drakeford, it seems, Covid restrictions are good, even if they don't work. The fact that these restrictions have not led to better outcomes in Wales is apparently irrelevant. For him, tighter rules are inherently good, moral and protective – a sign that, as a leader, he is taking Covid seriously, that he cares." (01/10/22)

49) Disturbing New Report Shows Dire Conditions For Grocery Workers

"An alarming new survey of thousands of grocery workers across three western U.S. states reveals that they suffer from shockingly high rates of poverty. More than three-quarters of the workers meet the U.S. Department of Agriculture's definition of 'food insecure,' and 14% say they have been homeless within the past year. The survey, which was funded by the United Food and Commercial Workers Union (UFCW) and performed by the nonprofit research group the Economic Roundtable, drew responses from more than 10,000 workers at Kroger, the largest all-grocery chain in the United States. ... The workers surveyed live in Southern California, Washington state, and Colorado, and all of them are UFCW members -- indicating that the abysmal conditions reported may in fact be better than the conditions of the average U.S.grocery worker, given the fact that all of those surveyed have at least the minimal protections that union contracts provide."
