1)  Palestine: One dead, several injured in Jerusalem bombings
Source: CBS News

"Two blasts went off near bus stops in Jerusalem on Wednesday, killing one person and injuring at least 14, in what police said were suspected attacks by Palestinian[ Arab]s. The first explosion occurred near a bus stop on the edge of the city, where commuters usually crowd waiting for buses. The second went off in Ramot, a[n Israeli squat] in the city's north. Police said one person died from the wounds and Israel's rescue service Magen David Adom said four people were seriously wounded in the blasts. ... Police said their initial findings showed that explosive devices were placed at the two sites. The twin blasts occurred amid the buzz of rush hour traffic and police closed part of a main highway leading out of the city, where the fist explosion went off." (11/23/22)

2)  SCOTUS clears way for US House committee to get disgraced former president's tax returns
Source: Axios

"The Supreme Court on Tuesday denied former President Trump's emergency application asking it to block a Democratic-led House committee from obtaining his tax returns. The denial allows Trump's tax returns to be released to the House Ways and Means Committee, which has been attempting for years to obtain them from the Internal Revenue Service as part of its investigation into the service's presidential audit program. Tuesday's order, which was unsigned and included no dissent, vacates a temporary hold Chief Justice John Roberts placed on the documents earlier this month." (11/22/22)

3)  Mali: Regime bans aid groups receiving funds from France
Source: ABC News

"Mali's government has announced a ban on aid groups that are funded by France, the latest attempt by the coup leader in charge to distance the West African country from its one-time colonizer and former ally in the fight against Islamic extremism. In a statement read late Monday on national television, the government said the decision was effective immediately and would apply not only to French non-governmental organizations but also those receiving 'material or technical support from France.' ... The announcement came only days after the French government announced it was suspending aid to Mali. However, France still planned to provide humanitarian aid through NGOS until Monday's announcement." (11/22/22)

4)  GA: Warnock widens lead over Walker in new runoff poll
Source: US News & World Report

"Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock holds a slight lead over his GOP challenger, Herschel Walker, in a runoff election poll released Tuesday morning, boosting Democrats' hopes of adding to their numbers in the Senate. The survey, completed by Fabrizio and Associates for AARP, shows Warnock with 51% support -- the first time the incumbent lawmaker has garnered more than 50% support in a general election poll this campaign season. Walker has the backing of 47% of voters, the survey found. Since neither man got more than half the vote on Election Day, they will face off in a Dec. 6 runoff election, as directed by state law. Warnock's lead in the AARP poll is wider than his advantage on Nov. 8, when the Democrat got 49.4% of the vote, compared to 48.5% for Walker." (11/22/22)

5)  Pope sacks leadership of worldwide Catholic charity, names commissioner
Source: Yahoo! News

"Pope Francis on Tuesday fired the entire leadership of the Roman Catholic Church's worldwide charity arm following accusations of bullying and humiliation of employees, and appointed a commissioner to run it. The surprise move involved the executives of Caritas Internationalis (CI), a Vatican-based confederation of 162 Catholic relief, development and social services organisations working in more 200 countries. The sackings of the executive level of CI, which has more than a million staff and volunteers around the world, were announced in a papal decree released by the Vatican press office. A separate statement from the Vatican's development department, which oversees CI, said a review of the workplace environment this year by external management and psychological experts found malaise and bad management practices at its headquarters." 6)  MO: Nineteen-year-old asks court to let her watch state employees kill her father
Source: NBC News

"A 19-year-old woman is asking a federal court to allow her to watch her father's death by injection, despite a Missouri law barring anyone under 21 from witnessing an execution. Kevin Johnson faces execution Nov. 29 for killing Kirkwood, Missouri, Police Officer William McEntee in 2005. Johnson's lawyers have appeals pending that seek to spare his life. Meanwhile, Johnson has requested that his daughter, Khorry Ramey, attend the execution, and she wants to be there. On Monday, the American Civil Liberties Union filed an emergency motion with a federal court in Kansas City. The ACLU's court filing said the law barring under 21s serves no safety purpose and violates Ramey's Constitutional rights. Ramey, in a court declaration, called Johnson 'the most important person in my life.'" (11/22/22)

7)  Estonia: HashFlare founders arrested in "astounding" $575 million crypto fraud scheme
Source: CoinTelegraph

"The two founders of the now-defunct Bitcoin cloud miner HashFlare have been arrested in Estonia over their alleged involvement in a $575 million crypto fraud conspiracy. HashFlare was a cloud mining company created in 2015 .... The company was seen as one of the leading names in the business at the time but shut down a large portion of its mining operations in July 2018. However, according to a statement from the United States Department of Justice citing court documents, the entire mining operation, run by founders Sergei Potapenko and Ivan Turogin, was part of a 'multi-faceted scheme' that 'defrauded hundreds of thousands of victims.' This included convincing victims to enter into 'fraudulent equipment rental contracts' through HashFlare and persuading other victims to invest in a fake digital currency bank called Polybius Bank." 8)  UN rights office: Iran must release protesters' bodies
Source: BBC News [UK state media]

"The UN human rights office has warned the situation in Iran is 'critical' and criticised authorities for apparently not releasing protesters' bodies. A hardening of the response by security forces to the anti-government unrest was resulting in a rising number of deaths, spokesman Jeremy Laurence said. He put the toll at more than 300. He also expressed concern at reports that bodies were being held unless families stayed silent or gave false statements on the cause of death. Sources close to the families of several people shot dead at protests over the past nine weeks have alleged that when they went to mortuaries to retrieve their bodies they came under pressure from security officials to go along with state media reports that they were bystanders or militiamen killed by 'rioters.'" 9)  Musk: Paid checkmarks won't return until Twitter can stop impersonation
Source: Ars Technica

"When Elon Musk first launched his Twitter Blue subscription service, the whole point was to make it possible to buy the blue checkmark as a coveted status symbol. Now, the billionaire is backtracking (for now, at least), announcing in a tweet that the relaunch of Blue Verified checkmarks will be delayed, and likely when it does roll out, checkmarks distinguishing between Blue Verified subscribers and official verified accounts will be different colors. 'Holding off relaunch of Blue Verified until there is high confidence of stopping impersonation,' Musk tweeted. 'Will probably use different color check for organizations than individuals.' ... Musk's tweet doesn't make it clear how different color checks for organizations versus individuals would actually prevent impersonation of individuals." (11/22/22)

10) WI: GOP leaders to push for "long term" tax cuts
Source: SFGate

"Wisconsin Republican legislative leaders said Tuesday they want to tap the state's projected record-high $6.6 billion budget surplus to make 'transformational' and once-a-generation tax law changes, including eliminating a tax paid by businesses and lowering income taxes for the most wealthy filers. Assembly Speaker Robin Vos and Senate Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu, speaking at a WisPolitics.com event, also said they hoped to work better with Democratic Gov. Tony Evers in his second term. Evers, who rarely talked with GOP leaders in his first term, reached out to both lawmakers recently, Vos and LeMahieu said. ... LeMahieu and Vos said they hope that is a sign that Evers is willing to work with them, both on what to do with the projected surplus and on related issues, like education policy and cutting taxes." 11) Russian hoaxer "Macron" called Poland's Duda over missile strike
Source: BBC News [UK state media]

"Polish President Andrzej Duda spoke to a hoaxer posing as France's Emmanuel Macron on the night a missile hit a village near the Ukraine border. His office confirmed the call after two well-known Russian pranksters posted a recording of the caller asking Mr Duda who he thought was responsible. During the call Mr Duda said he was being 'extra careful' and wanted to avoid war with Russia. He was targeted shortly after the missile killed two people on a farm. The 15 November strike came during one of the biggest Russian missile barrages on neighbouring Ukraine since the start of the war. Poland said initially that the missile that landed in Przewodow, 6km (4 miles) from the border, was Russian-made but later added there were no signs of an intentional attack. Nato Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said it was 'most likely' a Ukrainian air defence missile that landed in Poland." (11/22/22)

13) AZ: Second county delays certifying election, for now
Source: Killeen Daily Herald

"A second Republican-controlled Arizona county on Monday delayed certifying the results of this month's election as a protest against voting issues in Maricopa County that some GOP officials have blamed for their losses in top races including the contest for governor. The delay came as Maricopa, the state's most populous county, finished counting the last remaining ballots and the state attorney general demanded that officials there explain Election Day problems some voters experienced. Arizona voters elected a Democratic governor, Katie Hobbs, and gave Democratic Sen. Mark Kelly a full six-year term in office. But the race for attorney general was heading to a mandatory recount once the election is certified by all 15 counties and the secretary of state. Democrat Kris Mayes ended up ahead of Republican Abraham Hamadeh by just 510 votes on Monday after Maricopa County counted about 1,200 remaining ballots. Nearly 2.6 million Arizonans voted." 14) In California, 10% of Legislature now identifies as LGBTQ
Source: SFGate

"While LGBTQ candidates and their supporters celebrated several milestone victories around the nation in this year's midterm elections, California quietly reached its own: At least 10% of its state lawmakers identify publicly as LGBTQ, believed to be a first for any U.S. legislature. The California legislators, all Democrats, are proud of their success but say it underscores the hard work that remains in their own state and elsewhere, such as handling the fallout from measures such as Florida's 'Don't Say Gay' law, which bans some lessons on sexual orientation and gender identity, or laws in other states limiting transgender students' participation in sports or blocking gender-affirming medical care for youths." 15) Chelsea Manning: I would have done the same as Assange
Source: BBC News [UK state media]

"Chelsea Manning, who sent more than 700,000 confidential documents, videos and diplomatic cables to Wikileaks, has told BBC News she would have published them herself, if Julian Assange had not. Speaking to the Hardtalk programme's Stephen Sackur, Manning denied her actions had put lives at risk, saying 'the US government didn't show that in court.' In 2013, Manning was court martialled and sentenced to 35 years in prison. One of former President Barack Obama's last acts in office was to commute her sentence, in 2017. Manning, who did not read all the documents before leaking them, said she 'chose certain categories of information under the understanding' they did not identify sources, and 'did have access to' many other documents she had not leaked." 16) US investor home purchases dropped record amount in third quarter
Source: The Hill

"Investor home purchases fell by a record amount in the third quarter, outpacing the overall decline in home sales nationwide. A new report from the real estate company Redfin found that companies bought around 65,000 homes in the third quarter of 2022, which is down 30 percent from a year earlier. Investor activity dropped the most in single-family homes purchases, falling by 32.3 percent year over year in the third quarter. The reduction in investor purchase activity corresponds with a decline in home sales that was fueled by high prices and soaring mortgage rates amid a series of interest rate hikes from the Federal Reserve targeting growing inflation." 17) Report: FTX, Sam Bankman-Fried and his parents bought Bahamas real estate worth $121 million
Source: New York Post

"Disgraced FTX ex-CEO Sam Bankman-Fried, his parents, and other executives at the bankrupt platform have snapped up a fortune in real estate properties across the Bahamas in the last two years, according to a report Tuesday. Bankman-Fried and his associates own at least 19 properties in the island chain with an estimated value of nearly $121 million, Reuters reported, citing property records. The sprawling real estate empire was mostly comprised of high-end beachfront properties. The lavish purchases belie Bankman-Fried's image as a scruffy, T-shirt-and-sneakers-wearing donor to progressive causes. They also raise further questions about FTX's handling of more than $1 billion in missing client funds. Bankman-Fried's parents, Stanford University law professors Joseph Bankman and Barbara Fried, are reportedly listed as signatories on a beach house within the Old Fort Bay gated community. Documents from last June indicated the property was intended as a 'vacation home' for the family." (11/22/22)

18) Iran: Regime says 40 foreigners abducted for supposed involvement in protests
Source: Reuters

"Iran, which has blamed 'foreign adversaries' for protests sparked by the death of a woman in morality police custody, said on Tuesday 40 foreign nationals had been [abducted by regime thugs] for their role in the unrest. The Islamic Republic has been gripped by nationwide protests since the [police murder] of 22-year-old Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini in morality police custody on Sept. 16 after she was arrested for wearing clothes deemed 'inappropriate.' ... Tehran has blamed foreign enemies and their agents for orchestrating the protests, which have turned into a popular revolt by Iranians from all layers of society, posing one of the boldest challenges to the clerical rulers since the 1979 revolution." 19) CA: Progressive Sheng Thao wins Oakland mayoral race over moderate Loren Taylor
Source: SFGate

"Sheng Thao is the next mayor of Oakland, according to the final vote tally from the Alameda County Registrar of Voters. A self-described progressive, Thao has represented Oakland's District 4 as a city councilmember since 2019. After incorporating ranked-choice voting tabulations, she earned a narrow 50.3% to 49.7% edge over fellow city Councilmember Loren Taylor, who represents District 6. 'It's been a long journey, and I'm incredibly honored by the trust the voters have placed in me,' Thao wrote in a statement late Monday night. 'This was a very close election and I am proud to be elected as Oakland's next Mayor.' The Oakland mayoral race came down to two competing voter blocs. Thao was able to garner support from progressives and leftists and earned the endorsements of the Alameda County Democratic Party, California Attorney General Rob Bonta, Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., as well as three of her city council colleagues." (11/22/22)

20) AL: Regime pauses planned prisoner killings after third failed killing attempt
Source: NBC News

"Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey sought a pause in executions and ordered a 'top-to-bottom' review of the state's capital punishment system Monday after an unprecedented third failed lethal injection. Ivey's office issued a statement saying she had both asked Attorney General Steve Marshall to withdraw motions seeking execution dates for two inmates and requested that the Department of Corrections undertake a full review of the state's execution process. Ivey also requested that Marshall not seek additional execution dates for any other death row inmates until the review is complete. The move followed the uncompleted execution Thursday of Kenneth Eugene Smith, which was the state's second such instance of being unable to put an inmate to death in the past two months and its third since 2018. The state completed an execution in July, but only after a three-hour delay caused at least partly by the same problem with starting an IV line." (11/22/22)

21) Thankful 2022
Source: Garrison Center
by Thomas L Knapp

"It's that time of year again. As I write this, the US Thanksgiving holiday approaches and many of us take stock of just what we're thankful for. I recently ran into a situation that summarizes my biggest 'thankful' takeaway from 2022: A crowded Walmart. As in REALLY crowded. Uncomfortably crowded. 'Please let me out of here' crowded. No, I don't like shopping, nor am I fond of packed crowds in stores. In fact, for a few years in the early 2000s, I suffered a PTSD-like effect. I just couldn't tolerate it and simply fled more than once. But this is 2022, and crowded stores mean that the COVID-19 pandemic panic is over. I couldn't wait to get out of that Walmart, but not because everyone's face was covered and everyone was WORRIED sick about the possibility of GETTING sick." (11/22/22)

22) YouTube Censors Reality, Boosts Disinformation, part 1
Source: TK News
by Matt Taibbi

"Whether or not you thought the actual content of the story was important, the suppression of the Hunter Biden laptop affair was a crossroads moment in the history of modern censorship. YouTube played a major role in this event. This was a case in which major news media -- including CBS, NBC, PBS, CNN, and countless other outlets -- actively embraced disinformation, in the form of a group letter from 50-plus former intelligence officials saying the laptop story (they referred to a 'laptop op') had the 'classic earmarks of a Russian information operation.' All the aforementioned news agencies fell for this, as did Twitter .... YouTube also pushed this disinformation campaign. It still does." (11/21/22)

23) Allowed to Make a Living

by Paul Jacob

"In 2014, Sally Ladd started a service to help clients in the Poconos rent out their vacation homes. She posted notices on Airbnb, arranged for cleaning, and performed other chores. But then, in 2017, the Pennsylvania Bureau of Professional and Occupational Affairs -- one of the many government agencies in the world that should not exist -- told her that she was operating in Pennsylvania as a real estate broker without a license and must get one or shut down. The obstacle was senseless. Ladd was already satisfying her customers. And getting the license would have entailed more than 300 hours of schooling, two exams, three years of apprenticeship, and opening an office in Pennsylvania. (Ladd lives in New Jersey.) She had to shut down. But she didn't give up." (11/23/22)

24) Cities Switch From Requiring Too Many Parking Spaces To Banning Too Many Parking Spaces
Source: Reason
by Christian Britschgi

"This past week, Nashville's Metro Council approved a new ordinance that eliminates minimum parking requirements in the city's 'urban zoning overlay' district. From now on, developers in those urban zones won't have to build parking spaces no one wants. That doesn't mean Nashville builders are free to decide how much parking to construct, however. The city's new ordinance leaves the old parking standards in place but says from now on they'll be interpreted as parking maximums that cap the number of spaces developers are allowed to build. This is part of a trend. Across the country, jurisdictions are waking up to the high costs of mandated parking. But the reforms they enact often pair an elimination of costly parking minimums with counterproductive parking maximums." (11/22/22)

25) The Danger of Taking Official Claims at Face Value
Source: Eunomia
by Daniel Larison

"The Associated Press has fired the reporter behind an erroneous report that claimed that the missile that struck Poland last week had been fired by Russian forces. The original report relied on the word of a single anonymous U.S. intelligence official. An investigation into the erroneous report shows that a willingness to take official sources at their word seems to have been part of the larger problem .... Skepticism about official claims should always be the watchword for journalists and analysts. These are claims that need more scrutiny than usual rather than less. If you can't imagine that an intelligence official could get something important wrong, whether by accident or on purpose, you are taking far too many things for granted that need to be questioned and checked out first." Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, FBI Director Christopher Wray and National Counterterrorism Center (NCTC) Director Christine Abizaid fielded questions from our members on the dangerous threats President Biden's open border [sic] policies pose, the growing terrorist power-vacuum in Afghanistan, and the current state of our nation's cybersecurity. Notably, the hearing underscored that the threat from foreign terrorist organizations, particularly ISIS, remains reinvigorated following the Biden administration's botched [sic] withdrawal from Afghanistan. The Intelligence Community warned that these groups have the capability to launch attacks outside of Afghanistan, posing a significant threat if they choose to target the U.S. homeland." (11/22/22)

27) Election denial is reaching new levels of absurdity in Arizona
Source: Washington Post
by Henry Olsen

"The Trumpist belief that the 2020 election was fraudulent was always rooted in fiction. Now, following the midterm elections, some in Arizona are showing how deep into this fantasy world they have ventured. Arizona is home for many of the most fervent true believers in the election fraud myth. Their ire is directed toward election authorities in Maricopa County, home of Phoenix, where roughly 60 percent of the state's votes are cast. After the 2020 election, the purveyors of the fraud narrative pushed the state legislature to authorize the so-called audit of the county's vote. That effort confirmed Joe Biden's victory, but it did nothing to quell the faithful's suspicions. ... The fraud squad was thus shocked when most of their candidates were defeated." (11/22/22)

28) Inflation and Unemployment: Good News Isn't Bad News
Source: EconLog
by John Phelan

"On November 4, the Bureau of Labor Statistics announced that the U.S. economy added 261,000 jobs in October, beating estimates of 193,000. Isn't this good news? Not according to Neel Kashkari, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis, who said 'That tells me we have more work to do to try to cool down the economy and bring demand and supply into balance.' To most Americans, the idea that good jobs numbers are bad economic news might seem strange. The explanation is that the Federal Reserve uses the Phillips Curve to guide monetary policy." (11/22/22)

30) "Western Values" Are A Big Jerk-Off Fantasy
Source: Caitlin Johnstone, Rogue Journalist
by Caitlin Johnstone

"In our fucked up civilization 'individualism' increasingly means having the freedom to express your uniqueness by choosing between hundreds of makes and models of automobile while thinking the exact same thoughts as everyone else about America, capitalism, and foreign policy. We are told that the individual is prioritized in our society while being funneled through various conformity manufacturing plants like school and mass media consumption. Real individuality is stomped out and replaced with prostheses of mindless consumption and partisan thought. Real individualism would encourage radical individuality and divergence from orthodoxies. The so-called liberal democracies of the western world do the exact opposite, hammering us into authorized power-serving perspectives and herding us into mainstream partisan echo chambers." 31) The 59th Anniversary of the JFK Assassination
Source: Future of Freedom Foundation
by Jacob G Hornberger

"Given that today is the 59th anniversary of the JFK assassination, it is natural to ask what difference it makes. After all, that was a long time ago. Isn't it time to just let it go and move on? My answer is categorically no. The JFK assassination was a major political rupture in the history of our country. We are still bearing the consequences of that event 59 years later, just as the Iranian people are still bearing the consequences of the CIA's regime-change operation in their country in 1953. If we are ever to move our country in a better direction, it is essential that we confront what happened on November 22, 1963, to understand why it happened, and then recognize what we need to do to get our nation back on the right track." 32) Too Many Economic "Truths" Are Built on Fallacies
Source: Ludwig von Mises Institute
by George Ford Smith

"The country's top economists are in agreement that the Federal Reserve is necessary for economic prosperity. The country's leading experts agree that X is harming the environment. Therefore, the government should regulate or ban X. Let's address the first statement. Is it true? In a literal sense, yes -- the top economists wouldn't dream of doing without a central bank. Or if they did it would be considered a nightmare. So, is our work finished? Do we affirm it as true and move on? No, because the statement suggests that unless you're a top economist, you have no grounds for disagreeing. I call it the 'Who are you?' (Quis es?) fallacy. History tells us experts can be dead wrong, so let's at least mount a challenge, shall we?" (11/22/22)

34) Can Republicans Make Congress Great Again?
Source: Town Hall
by Stephen Moore

"There's no sugarcoating the disappointing results of the midterm elections. Even with one of the worst-performing presidents in modern times, Joe Biden, and even with 2 out of 3 voters saying the country is headed in the wrong direction, Republicans couldn't make the sale to independent voters. But the overall dismal number of House seats captured by Republicans wasn't as bad as the overall national vote count. Out of roughly 100 million ballots cast for House races, the Republicans won 51%, and the Democrats won 47%. Overall, more than 4 million more voters chose a Republican for Congress over a Democrat. If you're a Republican and were expecting a red tide, this is small consolation. It is like winning more innings in baseball but still losing the game. It does underscore that for the majority of voters, the GOP message held." (11/22/22)

35) Six Books That Will Rewire Your Brain (in a Good Way)
Source: Foundation for Economic Education
by Jon Miltimore

"The novelist Alice Hoffman once observed that books 'may well be the only true magic.' Hoffman is not the only person to recognize the power of the written word. C.S. Lewis observed that books reveal to us that we're not alone, while Frederick Douglass saw their liberating power. I've long observed that you can learn a lot about people by looking at their bookshelves. Some might say this is because books are a reflection of us, and this is partly true; but books also shape who we are. They have the power to lead us to truth or conceal it from us. Here are six books that can change how you see the world and reality--in a good way." (11/22/22)

36) Blowing up the de-nuclearization playbook: Got any better ideas?
Source: Responsible Statecraft
by Harry Kazianis

"While it might not get the attention it did back in 2017 when North Korea and the United States traded nuclear war threats, the hermit kingdom is back in the news -- and for a good reason. The Kim family is now testing new long-range missiles, or ICBMs, that can strike the U.S. homeland with a nuclear weapon. None of this, of course, has to happen. The reality is that while Washington will never be able to eliminate North Korea's nuclear weapons program, it does have the ability to shape it in a way that could provide fundamental safety and security for the region. But unfortunately, politics is preventing reason from winning the day." (11/22/22)

37) It's Weird, but Democrats Actually Have Their Sh*t Together in Congress
Source: The Daily Beast
by Matt Lewis

"Don't look now, but Dems are in ... array. The latest example is House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's decision to step down from her leadership post. Pelosi's exodus looks to be an orderly attempt to pass the torch to a new generation of leaders. Imagine that. Coming on the heels of a surprisingly good midterm where candidate quality and stability helped Dems, this (so far) seamless transition is another good sign. The troika (Pelosi, Rep. Steny Hoyer, and Rep. Jim Clyburn) who have been running the House Democrats are riding off into the sunset, while a new guard is riding in. ... Contrast that orderly transition with what is happening in the GOP: Ten Republicans tried (and failed) to oust Mitch McConnell as minority leader in the U.S. Senate, and Kevin McCarthy's elevation to Speaker of the House is still questionable." 38) Biden's lunatic bid to pay "poor nations" for "climate reparations"
Source: New York Post
by staff

"In a pathetic bid to 'show results' from the latest global climate-change confab, the Biden administration followed Western Europe's hysterical lead by signing on to a lunatic 'climate reparations' scheme. It's beyond outrageous. It won't even bring any progress in reducing global carbon emissions, the supposed goal of the COP-27 meetings. If it works as promised, it's just another wealth transfer from wealthy nations to the (largely corrupt) governing class of poor countries. The just-ended climate talks in Egypt brought few if any new commitments to reduce emissions .... instead, the 'we need some progress' crew opted for vows from wealthier countries, supposedly the biggest climate-change offenders, to fork over funds to poorer ones claiming to have suffered 'losses and damage' from climate-triggered natural disasters." 40) How Do We Protect Ourselves from Billion-Dollar Boy-Men?
Source: Quillette
by Jonathan Kay

"When Hollywood gives us the inevitable biopic about Sam Bankman-Fried and the collapse of his FTX cryptocurrency exchange, it'll be interesting to see whether even skilled filmmakers are able to convincingly portray Bankman-Fried as any kind of compelling villain figure. FTX's 30-year-old founder has admitted to many mistakes. But while his operations are now being investigated by the Securities and Exchange Commission and Justice Department, there isn't yet any evidence that he's committed a crime. His sins, rather, seem to be those of a distracted young dilettante who was in over his head, and who never fully realized that running a $32-billion company operating in a volatile financial sector is a full-time job." 42) The Rural Vote Is Again in Play
Source: In These Times
by George Goehl

"This spring I spent a couple of weeks traveling through the Midwest to meet with Democratic county chairs in rural areas. In my first meeting, before I could even take my seat, I got an earful about the struggle to simply get political yard signs out. This happened in nearly every meeting I had. These were committed and creative rural Democrats holding it all together with duct tape and bungee cords, crying for help. It hasn't always been this way. Former President Barack Obama won 43% of the rural vote in 2008 in what was an essential part of his coalition. Eight years later, those numbers dropped to 34% for Hillary Clinton. In 2020, Joe Biden improved the Democratic rural vote share by a percentage point or two in the states that mattered most, Wisconsin and Michigan, and carried the presidency." (11/22/22)

43) What is Russia Fighting for Today?
Source: CounterPunch
by Patrick Cockburn

"[General Mark] Milley may well be right, but it is difficult to see why Ukraine should negotiate while it is winning victories on the ground. As for President Vladimir Putin, he will scarcely want to talk until his army has achieved something other than stage shambolic retreats and lose territory captured in the first days of the invasion. What indeed are Russia's war aims? On 24 February, and for a couple of days afterwards, they were clear enough: Russia wanted to conquer Ukraine and install a proxy government, much as in Czechoslovakia in 1968. It did not happen: the invasion failed miserably to achieve any of its objectives, so what exactly is Russia fighting for today?" (11/22/22)

"[D]espite the fact that a wayward Ukrainian missile had killed two citizens within the borders of one of Ukraine's most vocal supporters, NATO and even Poland gave no indication of reconsidering their apparently unlimited support for the Ukrainian cause. NATO Secretary Jens Stoltenberg bent over backwards to excuse the incident. 'Let me be clear: This is not Ukraine's fault,' he claimed. 'Russia bears ultimate responsibility as it continues its illegal war against Ukraine.' ... The latest effort to run cover for the Ukrainians by the West has sent a powerful message to its beneficiary: not only is there nothing Zelensky and Ukraine could say to make the West reconsider its support for Ukraine, there is nothing Ukraine could do to lose its support, absent deciding to pursue a diplomatic solution to the conflict on their own accord." 45) Elon Musk Does the Unforgivable
Source: Epoch Times
by Roger Kimball

"Would Elon Musk be allowed on Twitter today if he didn't also happen to own the company? No. There have been plenty of complaints ever since Musk announced his bid for the company last spring. Right from the get-go, there was profound anxiety that Musk would circumvent Twitter's habit of censoring opinions that ran counter to the regime narrative. The Babylon Bee captured the uneasiness with a story titled 'Twitter Workers Worried Elon Musk Will Turn Their Free Speech Platform Into Platform That Allows Free Speech.' ... Once Musk actually took over in October, the anxiety ratcheted up to panic as Twitter workers confronted Musk's awful demand that they actually, you know, work. Musk hadn't owned the company for a full day before he disburdened himself of the CEO, the chief financial officer, and the chief legal officer." (11/22/22)

Ohanian notes, only about one in four California students are proficient in math, English, and science, a sign that California's broken K–12 school system 'is getting even worse,' despite average spending of nearly $500,000 per year per classroom. By contrast, students perform at a very high level at the Kairos charter school in Vacaville. Their success shows the potential of charter schools, but there's something about them that parents, students, and legislators should know. ... 47) Hollywood Fever Hits Missouri
Source: Show-Me Institute
by Avery Frank

"Film tax credits can be summarized as state governments paying a portion (usually about 25-40%) of a filmmaker's costs in order to attract them to do business in the state. In theory, the economic activity generated by the film production will be enough to offset the cost of taxpayer dollars, providing a positive boost to the economy. Missouri film credit advocates have repeatedly claimed that Gone Girl made $7.9 million off a $2.36 investment. But this is simply not the case. The $7.9 million was not profit or revenue for the state, but 'economic activity' (salaries, hotel rooms, dining, etc.). But even that figure is exaggerated, as most of the newly created jobs funded out-of-state employees and all in-state workers were part-time (most work as extras)." (11/21/22)

A red tide -- not the one fouling Florida's coasts, the one inundating its politics -- swept away Democrats' illusions that the Sunshine State might still be competitive. ... There is a silver lining to this dark electoral cloud for Democrats: A deep-red Florida gives them the freedom to reconstruct their Cuba policy based on U.S. foreign-policy interests rather than prognostications about Cuban American voters in Miami-Dade. But the habit of letting domestic politics drive Cuba policy will be hard to break." (11/21/22)

Title 42, a measure that is part of a broader 1944 law called the Public Health Services Act, allowed the Department of Homeland Security to reject and expel migrants at the border to stem the spread of disease. It was resurrected under the Trump administration amid the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, and has expelled over one million migrants. ...
