0)  "Hybrid Friday" at the Freedom Movement's Daily Newspaper!

Hey, everyone ...

We've got a FULL email edition for you below -- 20 news stories, 30 opinion pieces, and 15 audio/video links -- PLUS many more items (I add them until the last minute and am writing this on Thursday afternoon, but I'll guesstimate at least 100 and probably more like 110 total links) at our web edition:

https://news.rationalreview.com/

That much stuff doesn't fit comfortable in our email/social media format, but I like to load up on Fridays, whether it's "firehose" (web-only) or "hybrid" (some of each) style. Enjoy!

We're a reader-supported publication ... and, unfortunately, not always a WELL-supported publication. Last month, I knocked down about $80 and Steve made about $40. That's UNUSUALLY low (less than half our normal take for one of the nine "non-major-fundraiser" months per year), and a little worrying. If you value what we do, please help out at:

Have a happy, healthy and prosperous weekend!

1)  Palestine: Israeli regime rejects latest Hamas ceasefire offer
Source: BBC News [UK state media]

“Israel has rejected a statement from Hamas saying the armed group is ready for a ‘comprehensive deal’ to end the Gaza war and free all its hostages. ‘This is more spin by Hamas that has nothing new,’ Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said. It insisted the war would end only once the 48 hostages — 20 of whom are believed to be alive — were released, Hamas was disarmed, Gaza was demilitarised, Israel had security control, and an ‘alternative civilian administration’ was established. Hamas reiterated its call for a deal that would see hostages exchanged for Palestinian [hostages], Israeli forces withdraw, border crossings reopened, and the start of reconstruction. The group also said it agreed to the formation of an administration run by independent technocrats to govern post-war Gaza.” (09/04/25)

2)  Macron: 26 regimes pledge post-war security support for Ukraine
Source: France 24 [French state media]

“Twenty-six countries have offered to contribute to Ukraine’s security after any ceasefire deal with Russia, French President Emmanuel Macron said after a summit on Thursday, adding that US support would be finalised in coming days. A summit of Kyiv ‘coalition of the willing’ allies to firm up security guarantees if or when there is a peace deal in Ukraine was followed by a video conference with US President Donald Trump. ‘We have today 26 countries who have formally committed – some others have not yet taken a position – to deploy as a ‘reassurance force’ troops in Ukraine, or be present on the ground, in the sea, or in the air,’ Macron told reporters after the summit.” (09/04/25)

3)  US Initial Jobless Claims Rise to Highest Level Since June
Source: Bloomberg

“Applications for US unemployment benefits rose to the highest since June, adding to evidence that the labor market is cooling. Initial claims increased by 8,000 to 237,000 in the week ended Aug. 30. The median forecast in a Bloomberg survey of economists called for 230,000 applications. Companies have grown more hesitant about hiring while assessing the economic impact from President Donald Trump’s policies. Hiring plans fell to the weakest level for any August on record in data from outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas going back to 2009, while intended job cuts rose.” (09/04/25)

4)  Thailand’s Cannabis Crusader Rolls Into the Prime Minister’s Chair
Source: US News & World Report

“On Friday, a week after a court decision dismissed Paetongtarn [Shinawatra] as premier and triggered a political maelstrom, parliament overwhelmingly voted to elect Anutin [Charnvirakul] as Thailand’s next prime minister. The 58-year-old’s rise has been decades in the making, starting with his entry into politics with the Thai Rak Thai party founded by Paetongtarn’s billionaire father, Thaksin Shinawatra. … Anutin rose to prominence as health minister for his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, and championing Thailand’s legalisation of cannabis in 2022.” (09/05/25)

5)  US appeals court allows Florida concentration camp to continue operations for now
Source: CNN

“A federal appeals court has temporarily blocked a judge’s order requiring Florida and the federal government to shut down and dismantle a controversial immigration [concentration camp] built in the Everglades, widely referred to as ‘Alligator Alcatraz.’ On Thursday, the Eleventh US Circuit Court of Appeals granted requests from the State of Florida and the US Department of Homeland Security to stay a district court’s preliminary injunction that would have forced the site to wind down operations within 60 days. A preliminary injunction is a temporary order put in place until a court can make a final decision in a case.” (09/04/25)

6)  White House whines over $2 trillion Norwegian wealth fund’s Caterpillar exit
Source: CNBC

“The U.S. administration struck out at Norway’s $2 trillion wealth fund, saying it was ‘very troubled’ by the recent exit from American company Caterpillar. In recent weeks, the Norwegian sovereign wealth fund — the largest of its kind in the world — wound down its investments in Israel and announced plans to sell its holding of U.S. machinery manufacturer Caterpillar, amid concerns over links to the conflict in the Gaza Strip. … Last week, Norges Bank Investment Management, or NBIM — which manages the fund on behalf of the Norwegian population — said it would exit its stake in Caterpillar and five Israeli banks, citing ‘unacceptable risk that the companies contribute to serious violations of the rights of individuals in situations of war and conflict.’ At the end of last year, the fund held a 1.2% stake in New York-listed Caterpillar.” (09/04/25)

7)  Colombia: Soldiers doused with gasoline, set on fire during mission to destroy recreational pharmaceuticals facility
Source: CBS News

“Two Colombian soldiers were seriously injured after being doused with gasoline and set on fire when an anti-drug operation was attacked in southeastern Colombia, the army said Wednesday. The incident occurred during an operation to destroy a cocaine laboratory in a rural area of the northern Putumayo department, which borders Ecuador. A riot took place during which a ‘group of civilians attacked the uniformed officers with fire to impede the procedure,’ the military said in a statement Wednesday. … The army vowed action against the Comandos de Frontera, a dissident faction that rejected the 2016 peace accord between the government and the FARC guerrilla group, accusing them of orchestrating the attack and ‘coercing’ the civilian population in the area.” (09/04/25)

8)  States and developer sue Trump regime for halting work on New England offshore wind farm
Source: SFGate

“Rhode Island, Connecticut and the developer of an offshore wind farm that would power 350,000 homes in the two states said Thursday they’re suing the Trump administration for stopping the nearly completed project. The states will file a complaint in U.S. District Court in Rhode Island Thursday, said Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha,, who accused President Donald Trump of waging an “all-out assault” on the wind energy industry. Danish energy company Orsted filed a separate lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., arguing that the administration lacks the legal authority to block the Revolution Wind project. Orsted said it would seek a preliminary injunction that would allow it to move forward with the project, which is 80% complete, with all underwater foundations and 45 of 65 turbines installed. Interior Department spokesperson Elizabeth Peace said Thursday that the department doesn’t comment on pending litigation.” (09/04/25)

9)  Military Database: Three in Four Gaza Detainees Held Without Trial by Israel Are Civilians
Source: Common Dreams

“The vast majority of the Palestinians being held in Israel’s brutal detention centers are civilians, according to data from a classified Israeli military database. An investigation published Thursday by The Guardian, the Israeli-Palestinian publication +972 Magazine, and the Hebrew-language outlet Local Call reveals that of the more than 6,000 so-called ‘unlawful combatants’ detained by Israel during the first 19 months of its military campaign in Gaza, just 1,450 of them were considered by the army to be Hamas or Palestinian Islamic Jihad militants. In its public statements, the Israeli government and media often describe every Palestinian detained or killed in Gaza as a ‘terrorist’. … Israel’s Unlawful Combatants Law enacted in 2002, allows the military to hold people in detention if they have ‘reasonable grounds’ to believe they participated in ‘hostile activities against the state of Israel’ or are a member of a group that has.” (09/04/25)

10) Red Sea: Suspected Houthi attack targets ship
Source: ABC News

“A suspected attack by Yemen’s Houthi rebels [sic] targeted a ship in the Red Sea on Thursday, officials said, as the militants increase their missile fire targeting Israel. The attack off the coast of Hodeida follows an Israeli strike last week that killed the rebels’ [sic] prime minister along with several officials. The Houthis have been using cluster munitions in the missile attacks on Israel — which open up with smaller explosives that can be harder to intercept, raising the chances of strikes as Israel prepares for a new ground offensive in its war on Hamas that’s decimated the Gaza Strip. The attack Thursday saw an ‘unknown projectile’ land off the side of a vessel as electronic interference was particularly intense, the British military’s United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations center said. It added that the ship and crew were safe after the apparent assault.” (09/04/25)

11) Afghanistan: Death toll from earthquake jumps to more than 2,200 as aid agencies plead for funds
Source: SFGate

“Hundreds more bodies have been recovered from houses in mountain villages destroyed by a major earthquake in Afghanistan early this week, pushing the death toll to over 2,200, a Taliban government spokesman said Thursday. The shallow, magnitude-6.0 quake struck the mountainous and remote eastern part of the country late Sunday, leveling villages and trapping people under rubble. Most of the casualties have been in Kunar province, where people typically live in wood and mud-brick houses along steep river valleys separated by high mountains. Some 98% percent of the buildings in the province were damaged or destroyed, according to an assessment issued Thursday by the Islamic Relief charity. Aid agencies said they were sorely in need of staff and supplies to tend to the region’s survivors. Muhammad Israel said the quake unleashed a landslide that buried his home, livestock, and belongings in Kunar.” (09/04/25)

12) US House rejects effort to censure New Jersey congresswoman over scuffle with gang members
Source: San Diego Union-Tribune

“The House rejected a resolution to censure Rep. LaMonica McIver, D-N.J., and remove her from a committee that oversees immigration and national security as she faces federal charges stemming from a visit to an immigration [concentration camp]. The House voted 215-207 to table the measure, a sign that some were uncomfortable moving forward with censure while McIver’s case is still pending in the courts. A trial in her case has been scheduled for November. … Republicans sought to punish McIver for a confrontation with federal law enforcement during a congressional visit to a new immigration [concentration camp] in Newark, N.J. McIver has pleaded not guilty to federal charges accusing her of assaulting and interfering with immigration officers outside the facility.” (09/03/25)

13) DOJ launches criminal probe into Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook over mortgage fraud allegations
Source: New York Post

“The Justice Department has launched a criminal probe into Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook, issuing subpoenas in both Georgia and Michigan as part of an investigation into alleged mortgage fraud, The Post has learned. The investigation, first reported on by the Wall Street Journal, centers on whether Cook allegedly committed fraud by listing more than one property as a primary residence when she applied for mortgages. A grand jury in Atlanta is looking into Cook and ‘it’s likely an indictment could come,’ a source familiar with the matter told The Post. Cook owns properties in Michigan and Georgia, as well as Massachusetts.” (09/04/25)

14) India: Regime Lowers Tax on Renewables in Steps to Fight Trump Tariffs
Source: Bloomberg

“India more than halved a tax rate on domestic sales of renewable-energy equipment, as part of a raft of measures to shore up local consumption and shield the economy from punitive US tariffs. Goods and services tax on equipment including solar panels and parts for windmills and biogas plants was reduced from 12% to 5%, according to the finance ministry, lowering costs for consumers and potentially accelerating capacity installations. The tax panel recommended the changes come into effect from Sept. 22. … The tax reduction — though designed mainly to soften the blow from tariffs on America’s imports of Indian goods — comes as India seeks to install record volumes of solar and wind energy to meet its climate goals for 2030 and beyond.” (09/04/25)

15) Congo’s health ministry announces new Ebola outbreak
Source: SFGate

“Congo’s health ministry on Thursday announced a new Ebola outbreak, the 16th in the central African country, after a case was confirmed in the southern Kasai province. ‘To date, the provisional report shows 28 suspected cases and 15 deaths, including 14 in Boulapé and 1 in Mweka, as well as four healthcare workers,’ said Samuel-Roger Kamba, Congo’s health minister. He added that the case fatality rate, estimated at 53.6%, showed the gravity of the situation. He said that the figures were provisional and research was ongoing. The suspected cases and deaths presented symptoms such fever, vomiting, diarrhoea and haemorrhage. The confirmed case was of a 34-year-old pregnant woman in the locality of Boulape, in the southern Kasai province. The World Health Organization said Thursday it dispatched its experts alongside Congo’s Rapid Response Team to Kasai Province to strengthen disease surveillance, treatment and infection prevention and control in health facilities.” (09/04/25)

16) Trump regime asks SCOTUS to let it keep illegal taxes in place
Source: Axios

“The Trump administration asked the Supreme Court on Wednesday night to weigh in on its appeal to keep a broad set of tariffs in place after a lower court ruled they were illegal. Global trade is in a new state of limbo over whether the bulk of President Trump’s trade agenda might be overturned. If the Supreme Court ultimately upholds the [law], the overwhelming majority of tariffs implemented under Trump would be canceled. A federal appeals court on Aug. 29 [noticed] that Trump exceeded his authority by enacting widespread tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). The court, however, allowed the tariffs to remain in place through Oct. 14.” (09/03/25)

17) Federal judges anonymously criticize SCOTUS for overturning decisions with emergency rulings
Source: Fox News

“A group of anonymous federal judges is criticizing the Supreme Court for overturning lower court rulings and siding with President Donald Trump’s administration with little to no explanation, NBC News reported Thursday. NBC spoke with 12 federal judges, appointed by Democratic and Republican presidents including Trump, who pointed to a trend of lower court decisions being overturned by emergency rulings from the high court. These cases often see prominent members of Trump’s administration lashing out at lower court judges before their cases are overturned. Ten of the 12 judges argued the Supreme Court should offer more explanation when overturning such decisions, saying emergency rulings in such cases imply poor work on the part of lower court judges. ‘It is inexcusable,’ one judge said of the Supreme Court. ‘They don’t have our backs.’ That judge also said they have received death threats for issuing rulings that counter Trump’s agenda.” [editor’s note: So “affirm the Constitution” is now “counter Trump’s agenda?” – SAT] [additional editor’s note: You can have “affirm the Constitution” OR “Trump’s agenda.” Pick one – TLK] (09/04/25)

18) Argentina: Police recover Nazi-looted Italian painting spotted in property ad
Source: France 24 [French state media]

“Argentine authorities recovered an 18th century painting stolen by Nazis from a Dutch Jewish art collector over a week after it appeared in a property ad only to suddenly vanish. The ‘Portrait of a Lady’ by Italian baroque painter Giuseppe Ghislandi was missing for eight decades …. Prosecutors said Wednesday that the woman’s lawyer returned the work after a major hunt for it that made headlines worldwide. … The painting was recognised last week by the Dutch newspaper AD in photographs of a house for sale in the seaside resort of Mar del Plata. It was hanging above a green sofa in the living room of Patricia Kadgien, daughter of SS financial guru Friedrich Kadgien, one of several high-ranking Nazis to escape to Argentina after the war.” (09/04/25)

19) CA: Newest homelessness solution is letting college kids sleep in their cars
Source: SFGate

“In the fall of 2021, Emma Johnson was ready to move into her new apartment and begin her senior year at UC San Diego. The school guarantees campus dorms for students’ first two years, but most juniors and seniors live off campus. When Johnson opened the door to her apartment, she found 2 inches of water inside. She and her roommates didn’t have renters insurance, and the landlord declared he’d have to gut the unit. One by one, Johnson’s roommates found friends to crash with or leased new apartments with their parents as cosigners. But Johnson, who paid for school and her living expenses with a Pell Grant — federal funding granted to students with exceptional financial need that does not need to be repaid — and federal loans, suddenly found herself homeless.” (09/04/25)

“A federal judge invalidated the Trump administration’s freeze of $2.2 billion worth of federal grants to Harvard University, handing the school a major legal victory Wednesday. U.S. District Judge Allison Burroughs restored the funding after Harvard and employee groups sued, agreeing it ran afoul of constitutional free speech protections and federal law. … The Trump administration paused the funding for Harvard back in April, alleging the university was in violation of civil rights laws due to inaction against antisemitism on campus. Harvard quickly sued, becoming the first university to fight the Trump administration in court over funding pauses.” (09/03/25)

21) Murder On The High Seas: Trump May Be Immune, But Are His Co-Conspirators?
Source: Garrison Center
by Thomas L Knapp

“When someone credibly confesses to murder, announces an intent to commit further murders, and clearly possesses the means to do so, it seems to me that whatever law applies should be brought to bear. … the US Supreme Court ruled last year that presidents enjoy immunity for all ‘official acts,’ even illegal ones like, say, ordering 11 murders. So Trump himself is as unlikely to be held accountable for this atrocity as for other crimes he’s ordered, such as the murder of eight-year-old American girl Nawar Anwar al-Awlaki in 2017. But what about Hegseth, Rubio, and the various military officers who must have been involved in planning and directing the operation?” (09/04/25)

22) Libertarians versus Conservatives on Drug War Murders
Source: Future of Freedom Foundation
by Jacob G Hornberger

“When it comes to civil liberties … conservatives in general have always been total disasters. Historically, conservatives have always felt that the constitutional protections in the Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, and Eighth Amendments are nothing more than constitutional ‘technicalities’ designed to let guilty people go free. As far as conservatives are concerned, the nation would have been much better off in terms of ‘safety’ and ‘security’ if those amendments had never been enacted. … Conservatives, as everyone knows, have always been the premier supporters of the war on drugs. … Libertarians, on the other hand, are fiercely opposed to the war on drugs.” (09/04/25)

23) The Everest of Theft
Source: Common Sense
by Paul Jacob

“Civil forfeiture laws allow officers of the law to commit theft. Sometimes they have to return the money they stole. But they don’t get punished. Under civil forfeiture, authorities can grab cash or other possessions without proving criminal wrongdoing and without making an arrest. Since 2000, though, a federal law has made the federal government liable for reasonable attorney fees when a victim ‘substantially prevails’ in court. This law enabled Brian Moore, a rap artist, to eventually obtain compensation for thousands in legal costs after he sued to recover the $8,500 taken from him by federal drug agents. … It was like Mount Everest. The officers took Moore’s stuff because it was there.” (09/04/25)

24) Putin’s Fear of a Humiliating Economic Crisis
Source: Foreign Policy
by Agathe Demarais

“No one knows what Russian President Vladimir Putin was hoping to achieve when he embarked on a nine-hour flight from Moscow to Alaska to meet U.S. President Donald Trump last month. But it’s a safe bet that he was looking to avoid the additional sanctions on the Russian economy that Trump had vaguely threatened a number of times — and perhaps get relief from existing sanctions or even some lucrative U.S. investment deals. Putin has every reason to seek a lifeline for the Russian economy. In recent weeks, a flurry of signs has shown Russia’s war-drained, sanctions-constrained economy to be at an inflection point. For the first time since the start of the war, nonmilitary economic activity has been contracting, bankers are making plans to weather a financial crisis, and energy firms are worrying about losing their largest customer for seaborne oil exports.” (09/04/25)

25) American Manufacturing Needs Relief From Trump’s Tariffs
Source: Reason
by Eric Boehm

“The data are becoming impossible to ignore: American manufacturers desperately need relief from the very same tariffs that the Trump administration incoherently believes are helping American manufacturers. That conclusion is evident from both results of a new survey of manufacturing companies’ CEOs and new economic data showing that manufacturing activity has declined for six consecutive months — the sort of slide over two economic quarters that typically meets the definition of a sector-wide recession. In short, both words and actions point to something being very wrong with American manufacturing since February, which just so happens to be when Trump announced the first of what have become many rounds of new tariffs on imported goods and raw materials.” (09/04/25)

26) What home means to Syria’s returnees
Source: Christian Science Monitor
by staff

“Until last year, a country at the heart of the Middle East was known for enduring one of world’s largest population displacements. About half of Syria’s 23 million were forced to flee their homes during a 14-year civil war. Since the ouster of a dictator nine months ago, however, more than 2 million citizens have returned. Most go back to pick up old lives and recreate a democratic country. ‘When we were expelled, it felt as if our souls had been torn from our bodies,’ Mamdouh al-Sattouf, a former school principal, told Al Jazeera. ‘Now that we have returned, it feels as if we have regained our souls.’ The rising pace in the number of Syrian returnees is due in part to a new government’s efforts to hold elections this month, revive the economy with foreign help, and restore Syria’s former social harmony between diverse ethnic and religious groups.” (09/03/25)

“President Vladimir Putin of Russia was calm, confident, composed, and above all else, consistent when he spelled out Russia’s unchanging terms to end the Ukraine war when he spoke to the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Tianjin on September 1st. Once again he made clear that Moscow rejected every ‘statesmanlike compromise’ that President Donald Trump and his spin doctors came up with in Washington, as well as those dreamt up by the leaders of NATO and the European Union who are eager to appease their real Master, Volodymyr Zelensky. … Most Western major media outlets, lying desperately as usual, described Putin’s speech and appearance at the SCO summit as an attempt to break the diplomatic isolation they imagine he has been in since the war started in February 2022. But, of course, Putin and Russia have never been isolated …” (09/04/25)

28) Ilhan Omar promotes socialist nonsense as her wealth skyrockets. What a hypocrite.
Source: USA Today
by Nicole Russell

“Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota is one of the most liberal members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus. She supports socialist policies like Medicare for All and student loan forgiveness. She has even endorsed a democratic socialist to become mayor of Minneapolis. Due no doubt to her ideological convictions, she has said that she lives modestly. In February, Omar told Business Insider that she was barely worth thousands of dollars, despite an annual congressional salary of $174,000. … Omar and her husband’s net worth skyrocketed in 2024 and now ranges between $6 million and $30 million. … I don’t have a problem with Omar benefiting from her husband’s savvy business decisions. But I do have a problem with Omar promoting ideas that discourage capitalism and individual wealth-building while raking in a six-figure income and sitting on millions of dollars in net worth.” (09/04/25)

29) Gaza’s Looming Cancer Epidemic: The Many Ways Bombs Can Kill
Source: TomDispatch
by Joshua Frank

“A week after the Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023, a large explosion incinerated a parking lot near the busy Al-Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza City, killing more than 470 people. It was a horrifying, chaotic scene. Burnt clothing was strewn about, scorched vehicles piled atop one another, and charred buildings surrounded the impact zone. Israel claimed the blast was caused by an errant rocket fired by Palestinian extremists, but an investigation by Forensic Architecture later indicated that the missile was most likely launched from Israel, not from inside Gaza. In those first days of the onslaught, it wasn’t yet clear that wiping out Gaza’s entire healthcare system could conceivably be part of the Israeli plan. After all, it’s well known that purposely bombing or otherwise destroying hospitals violates the Geneva Conventions and is a war crime, so there was still some hope that the explosion at Al-Ahli was accidental.” (09/04/25)

30) AI has come to reshape education
Source: Foundation for Economic Education
by Lika Kobeshavidze

“In the last few years, everything has changed for college students. Applications capable of writing assignments suddenly became a part of everyday life. What is the real impact of artificial intelligence (AI)? Is it a convenient tool for personalized learning or a path to academic dishonesty? Out of nowhere, AI became students’ best friend. A tool created in 2022 is now a daily habit. Professors may see dishonesty, but students see efficiency. Is AI additional help or a shortcut to avoid learning? The real problem is a decline in educational standards. Will over-reliance on AI make students smarter, or does it come with darker consequences?” (09/04/25)

31) Why Does the Pentagon Seem to Be Spending More for Less?
Source: Responsible Statecraft
by Stephen Miles

“As US Congress returns from its summer recess, Washington’s attention is turning toward a possible government shutdown. While much of the focus will be on a showdown between Senate Democrats and President Donald Trump, a subplot is brewing as the House and Senate, led by Republicans but supported by far too many Democrats, fight over how big the Pentagon’s budget should be. The House voted to give Trump his requested trillion dollar budget, while the Senate is demanding $22 billion more. To justify this historic largesse, both Trump and Congress give the same reason: peace through strength. Harkening back to Ronald Reagan’s Cold War military spending spree, today its invocation often boils down to one simple idea: Give the Pentagon more money. But, since Reagan’s famed buildup actually cost much less, it’s worth asking if the problem really is a lack of funds.” (09/04/25)

33) Jury Duty: Ordinary Heroes Use Building Block of Democracy to Fight Trump
Source: Philadelphia Inquirer
by Will Bunch

“It’s a well-worn cliche in the legal world that prosecutors have so much clout in the grand jury room that they could indict a ham sandwich. The currency of this quote only soared in value when the man who first uttered it, a New York State top judge named Sol Wachtler, was subsequently indicted himself. And maybe the US Justice Department still could indict a ham sandwich. But a salami hoagie from Subway is apparently a bridge too far. I am talking, of course, about the now notorious Washington, DC case against the man commonly known as ‘Sandwich Guy’ — a now-former Justice Department paralegal (yes, the irony) named Sean Dunn whose anger at the federal surge of law-enforcement officers backed by National Guard troops in the nation’s capital boiled over last month.” (09/04/25)

“In its various forms, media can be seen as a means of directing collective attention. For example, a sensational story, a broad campaign, or a mind virus can focus public attention and emotional energy on a specific concept or cause. These coalesce and strengthen a resultant set of thought patterns, and people start to think, speak, and act in malevolent synchrony. An egregore is born. When enough people hold such patterns in place of truth or good, they become dangerous. The resulting mass belief has a kind of agency. In a manner of speaking, it lives.” (09/04/25)

“With U.S. gross debt now at a staggering $37 trillion — roughly equivalent to the combined debt of all other major advanced economies — Washington is trapped in a fiscal doom loop of its own making. Decades of bipartisan overspending have pushed the nation to a point where a mere 1% increase in mean Treasury interest rates adds $370 billion to annual debt service costs. The arithmetic is unforgiving. Yet, Donald Trump’s second administration is doubling down, pursuing policies that risk accelerating the crisis.” (09/04/25)

37) Hypocritical Dems playing dangerous game, fantasizing about Trump’s demise & condoning political violence
Source: New York Post
by Miranda Devine

“Over the Labor Day weekend, instead of enjoying the last days of summer with family and friends, Democrats and other Trump-deranged folk had nothing better to do than indulge in sick fantasies about the president’s death. Hashtags like #trumpisdead and #whereistrump trended on X, with countless TikToks, Google searches and posts saying ‘TRUMP DIED’ garnering millions of likes and views. This was not a harmless meme or politics as usual. It was seeded by anonymous left-wing social media accounts and amplified by journalists and influencers to create a permission structure to fantasize about Trump’s demise. Despite photos of Trump golfing with his grandchildren and his numerous long missives on Truth Social — including about the landscapers who ruined the new limestone paving in the Rose Garden — the rumor went viral.” (09/04/25)

39) A Police State Presidency: When “Rule of Law” Becomes “Rule by Gunpoint”
Source: CounterPunch
by John W Whitehead & Nisha Whitehead

“Donald Trump has always been a master of imagery. From his red MAGA hats to his choreographed rallies, he understands the language of spectacle. Now he has discovered the perfect propaganda machine: AI-generated images. AI allows the creation of endless variations of Trump-as-warrior, Trump-as-enforcer, Trump-as-savior. These images spread across social media, replicated, remixed, and shared until they become familiar, even normalized. The latest AI-generated images of Trump, shared on his social media accounts, depict him in the militarized black uniform of a SWAT officer, or in police dress blues. These memes are carefully crafted signals of how Trump envisions power in America.” (09/04/25)

41) We Need to Double Down on Harm Reduction, Not Walk Away From It
Source: Common Dreams
by Kasia Malinowska-Sempruch

“We lost more than 80,000 Americans to overdose last year, making it the leading cause of death for adults aged 18 to 44. But, for the first time in years, we have some reason for hope: in 2024, overdose deaths dropped by 27 percent. That progress, however, didn’t happen on its own. It came from investments in harm reduction: an ecosystem of strategies including naloxone distribution, syringe service programs, medications for opioid use disorder, and housing-first programs that secured shelter for people before connecting them to care. Unfortunately, much of that progress is in danger. In recent weeks, President Trump issued an executive order targeting the very programs that provide these services and helped bring down overdose deaths. In doing so, the administration is cutting federal funding for proven, evidence-based interventions.” (09/04/25)

“President Donald Trump desperately wants the Nobel Peace Prize. His lust for the ultimate sign of international and establishment acceptance is truly cringeworthy. Does he know whose ranks he would be joining if he received the nod of appointees by the Norwegian parliament? Many prior recipients, however worthy, are international unknowns. Other better-known awardees were unworthy. … In short, Trump has no claim to the Nobel Peace Prize. And that judgment comes before considering his direct complicity in mass killing committed by U.S. client states.” (09/04/25)

43) The False Pretenses Behind the Naval Operation Off the Coast of Venezuela
Source: The Dispatch
by David Smilde

“The U.S. has sent eight warships and one attack submarine to international waters off the coast of Venezuela, nominally to combat ‘cartels [that] have engaged in a campaign of violence and terror throughout the Western Hemisphere … [and] flooded the United States with deadly drugs, violent criminals, and vicious gangs.’ Part of this operation has been the designation of the ‘Cartel de los Soles’ in July, as a specially designated terrorist group. On Tuesday, President Donald Trump celebrated the operation’s first result on Truth Social — a drone strike on a small wooden boat with outboard motors, that he claimed was being used to transport drugs to the U.S. The entire naval operation raises a number of questions. First, Venezuela is not a leading source of the drugs reaching U.S. streets. … Perhaps more important, there is no actual organization called Cartel of the Suns.” (09/04/25)

44) America Is Choosing Decline

“Has a major world power ever intentionally inflicted so much damage on itself in such a constricted period of time? I’m sometimes inclined to reach for a vivid and bloody metaphor to describe it: The world is watching us, stunned, while we slit our own throat — with our initiation of trade wars with countries around the globe … our president’s display of pathetically gullible obsequiousness to Russian dictator Vladimir Putin; with firing the head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for refusing to go along with the anti-vaccination ignorance of the Secretary of Health and Human Services; with attempting to fire a member of the Federal Reserve’s Board of Governors … with the president militarizing the nation’s capital and threatening to deploy troops to other cities around the country.” (09/03/25)

45) Some Questions For RFK In The Senate Today
Source: Town Hall
by Derek Hunter

“Let me start by saying that I am generally a fan of what Robert Kennedy Jr. is trying to do over at the Department of Health and Human Services. As a recovering health policy guy, I know there is a lot of room for changes and streamlining over at HHS – a lot of boats that need to be rocked, and RFK is nothing if not a boat-rocker. That being said, I agree with no one 100 percent of the time, not even myself. So there are a couple of things I’d like someone in the Senate to ask him about. First, I do want to explore the topic I’m sure Democrats will attempt to hammer him on: vaccines. I don’t know if traditional vaccines cause autism or anything else, but I do have friends who have children with autism and some swear by the idea that they do.” (09/04/25)

46) Most Teachers Don’t Like Equitable Grading Practices Either
Source: Show-Me Institute
by Cory Koedel

“Rather than being viewed as accurate indicators of knowledge and skills, traditional grades are viewed by some as contributing to longstanding social inequities. In response, some districts have adopted ‘equitable grading’ practices, which can include giving students partial credit for assignments that are not turned in, allowing multiple test retakes without penalty, and not penalizing students for failing to complete homework or participate in class. For my take on why equitable grading policies are illogical and misguided, see my previous post about San Francisco’s recent bid to introduce a sweeping Grading for Equity policy. It ultimately failed under intense public pressure once families understood what was happening, because most people do not support these ideas. It turns out most teachers don’t support them either.” (09/03/25)

47) Why AI Overregulation Could Kill the World’s Next Tech Revolution
Source: Cato Institute
by Peter Goettler

“Overreach of government regulation can pose a grave threat to nascent, promising technologies. This is particularly true in the case of AI, with many prognosticators having made the case that AI could pose substantial — even existential — risks to humanity. This has put policymakers and regulators on high alert to discern emerging threats from AI and has left them all too ready to apply heavy-handed regulation to deal with those perceived threats. Most of us are not technologists or, heaven knows, futurists. But everyone can recognise one of history’s most familiar patterns: The emergence of a promising technology is nearly always accompanied by fears of risk or downside from that technology, often including doomsday scenarios. And in every historical case, the technologies did, indeed, carry risks and downsides, but the downsides were dwarfed by the tremendous benefits to humanity.” (09/03/25)

The atmosphere resembled the scientists waiting to see the first atomic bomb test at Los Alamos. GPT-5 was supposed to be another great leap forward toward the promised godlike telos of artificial general intelligence (AGI), a machine smarter than any human and possibly smarter than the sum of human civilization itself. Despite being relentlessly hyped for years, the most significant part of the announcement was the release of a model router that dynamically selects the correct ‘level’ of computation power spent toward answering questions.” (09/04/25)

They still read the Times and the Journal, but also subscribe to multiple Substacks and are daily imbibers of less ‘safe’ publishers, like Brownstone.org. They triangulate.
