1)  NASA's Artemis 1, most powerful rocket in history, blasts off to moon
Source: The Guardian [UK]

"Two hurricanes, two months and a number of technical fixes since previous launch attempts were thwarted, Nasa's Artemis 1, the most powerful space rocket in history, is finally on course for the moon after lifting off from Florida early on Wednesday. The spacecraft, comprising the mighty Space Launch System (SLS) rocket and pioneering Orion capsule, lit the night sky as it rose from its Cape Canaveral launchpad. The 25-day, 1.3m-mile journey to the moon and back is Nasa's first crew-capable deep-space mission for half a century. No astronauts are aboard the Artemis 1 test flight, three mannequins and a Snoopy soft toy gauging radiation levels and testing new life-preservation systems and equipment designed for the next generation of long-duration human spaceflight." 2)  Ukraine war: Biden Says It's "Unlikely" Missile That Hit Poland Was Fired From Russia
Source: Antiwar.com

"President Biden told reporters in Indonesia on Wednesday that it's 'unlikely' the missile that hit a village in Poland Tuesday near the Ukrainian border was fired by Russia and that 'preliminary' information indicates otherwise. 'There is preliminary information that contests that,' Biden said when asked by reporters if the missile was fired by Russia. 'I don't want to say until we completely investigate. It's unlikely in the minds of the trajectory that it was fired from Russia.' After Biden's comments, three US Officials told The Associated Press that 'preliminary assessments' suggest the missile that hit Poland was fired by Ukrainian forces and was meant to intercept a Russian missile." 3)  Iran: Protesters Mark Bloody 2019 Uprising With Three-Day Strike
Source: Bloomberg

"Businesses, students and workers in Iran resumed anti-government strikes on Tuesday to mark the anniversary of one of the deadliest protests in the country's history. Scores of unverified videos shared on social media purportedly showed deserted town centers and shuttered shops in various locations. The latest action comes as the current uprising against Iran's ruling Islamic system enters its ninth week despite a violent crackdown by security forces that rights groups say has so far killed more than 320 people. ... Tehran's Grand Bazaar -- seen as a traditional linchpin of support for the clerical establishment -- was also closed, according to several videos and traders were shown shouting slogans in some footage. Other videos showed demonstrators gathering in various parts of Tehran and a large crowd shouting 'death to the dictator' in a metro station. None of the videos can be verified by Bloomberg News." 4)  GA: Judge overturns state's six-week abortion ban
Source: Reuters

"A Georgia law banning abortion after six weeks of pregnancy cannot be enforced, a state judge ruled on Tuesday, handing a victory to Planned Parenthood and other abortion rights groups that challenged the restriction when it took effect this summer. Judge Robert McBurney of the Superior Court of Fulton County said the law was void at the time it was passed in 2019 under the U.S. Supreme Court's since-overturned ruling in Roe v. Wade, which had established a federal right to abortion. McBurney said the state would have to pass the law again now that the Supreme Court has overturned Roe for the ban to be valid. The 2019 law was 'plainly unconstitutional when drafted, voted upon, and enacted,' McBurney wrote in his opinion." (11/15/22)

5)  China: Violent protests in Guangzhou put zero Covid curbs under strain
Source: BBC News [UK state media]

"Crowds of residents in southern China's industrial metropolis Guangzhou have escaped a compulsory lockdown and clashed with police, as anger at strict coronavirus curbs boiled over. Dramatic footage shows some overturning a police vehicle and tearing down Covid control barriers. Riot teams have now been deployed in the area. It follows Guangzhou's worst Covid outbreak since the pandemic began. Amid bad economic figures, China's zero Covid policy is under enormous strain. Tensions had been building in the city's Haizhu District, which is under stay-at-home orders. The area is home to many poorer itinerant labourers. They have complained of not being paid if they are unable to turn up for work, and of food shortages and skyrocketing prices while living under Covid control measures." (11/15/22)

6)  Disgraced former president defeats niece in lawsuit over inheritance
Source: Reuters

"Donald Trump defeated his niece Mary Trump in a lawsuit where she accused the former U.S. president and two of his siblings of defrauding her out of a multimillion-dollar inheritance. In a decision on Monday, Justice Robert Reed of a New York state court in Manhattan said Mary Trump released her claims against her relatives in a 2001 settlement over the estate of Donald Trump's father Fred Trump Sr. Reed's decision came the same day a federal judge in Manhattan handed Donald Trump another legal victory, dismissing a lawsuit by his former lawyer Michael Cohen over being returned to prison in alleged retaliation for writing a tell-all memoir." 7)  Prosecutors: Giuliani won't be charged over Ukraine-related actions
Source: Politico

"Rudy Giuliani, an attorney and adviser to former President Donald Trump, won't face criminal charges over his work on issues related to Ukraine, federal prosecutors said Monday. The investigation of Giuliani grabbed headlines last May when the FBI raided the former New York mayor's home and office, carrying out a court-ordered search warrant seeking evidence of violations of the Foreign Agents Registration Act. ... 'The Government writes to notify the Court that the grand jury investigation that led to the issuance of the above-referenced warrants has concluded, and that based on information currently available to the Government, criminal charges are not forthcoming,' Assistant U.S. Attorney Rebekah Donaleski and other prosecutors wrote in a two-sentence letter to Judge J. Paul Oetken." (11/15/22)

8)  IL: Voters approve collective bargaining amendment
Source: SFGate

"Illinois voters have approved an amendment to their state constitution guaranteeing the right to bargain collectively. The measure in last week's election was closely watched in Illinois and beyond as a gauge of public support for the labor movement, which has lost ground for years in conservative-led states. Unions groups say it could signal a new chapter in the struggle over workers' rights as U.S. union ranks have grown as everyone from coffee shop baristas to warehouse workers seeks to organize. They view it as a way to ensure workers will always be able to use their collective clout to secure better pay, hours and working conditions. They also say it will prevent the Legislature, should it undergo a shift to the right, from passing a so-called right-to-work law that would allow workers covered by union contracts to not pay dues." 9)  Study: Humans could face reproductive crisis as sperm count decline
Source: The Guardian [UK]

"Humans could face a reproductive crisis if action is not taken to tackle a drop in sperm count, researchers have warned after finding the rate of decline is accelerating. A study published in the journal Human Reproduction Update, based on 153 estimates from men who were probably unaware of their fertility, suggests that the average sperm concentration fell from an estimated 101.2m per ml to 49.0m per ml between 1973 and 2018 -- a drop of 51.6%. Total sperm counts fell by 62.3% during the same period. ... Previous studies have suggested that fertility is compromised if sperm concentration falls below about 40m per ml." (11/15/22)

10) Canada: Police charge Hydro-Quebec employee with China espionage
Source: BBC News [UK state media]

"Canadian police say a public utility worker at Hydro-Quebec has been arrested for spying for China. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) arrested Yuesheng Wang, 35, on Monday and charged him with espionage. Mr Wang 'obtained trade secrets to benefit the People's Republic of China, to the detriment of Canada's economic interests,' police said in a statement. He will appear in court in Longueuil, Quebec, on Tuesday to face four criminal charges. The resident of Candiac, a suburb south of Montreal, is accused of obtaining trade secrets, unauthorised use of a computer, breach of trust by a public officer and fraud for obtaining trade secrets. The crimes allegedly occurred between February 2018 and October 2022. A company statement said that Mr Wang worked on batteries for the utility's Center of Excellence in Transportation Electrification and Energy Storage (CETEES), which develops technology for electric vehicles." 11) Walmart agrees to $3.1 billion bribe to exit frivolous opioid litigation
Source: CNN Business

"Walmart agreed to the framework of a $3.1 billion settlement, which resolves allegations from multiple states' attorneys general that the company failed to regulate opioid prescriptions contributing to the nationwide opioid crisis. The settlement, according to the office of New York Attorney General Letitia James, who co-led a coalition of attorneys general in the negotiation, will also 'include broad, court-ordered requirements Walmart must comply with, such as robust oversight to prevent fraudulent prescriptions and flag suspicious prescriptions.' ... The framework will resolve virtually all opioid lawsuits and potential lawsuits by state, local, and tribal governments against Walmart, assuming all the settlement's conditions are satisfied." 12) Spain: Regime to launch "digital nomad" visa for remote workers
Source: Yahoo! News

Spain's parliament recently approved a 'digital nomad visa' for foreign remote workers. The visa is part of Spain's new Startups Act and is expected to pass in January 2023. The minimum income requirement will likely be between €2,000 and €3,000 a month, local outlets report. Spain has been teasing a 'digital nomad' visa for over a year now that would allow remote workers to live and work in the country for up to five years. The visa, bundled within a new startup law aiming to help the country's burgeoning tech scene, was approved by the Spanish parliament in early November. Now, the bill just needs final ratification by the Senate before going into effect." (11/15/22)

13) OR: Thousands of Portland mayor's texts gone from public record
Source: US News & World Report

"Thousands of text messages from Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler's city-issued iPhone and the phones of other top officials are missing from the public record, including texts he sent after former President Donald Trump directed federal agents to the city to quell nightly racial justice protests. Oregon Public Broadcasting reports that the city uses specialized software to capture text messaging on city-issued phones so they can be retained for public record requests, but the software can't capture encrypted messages sent using Apple's iMessage service. OPB's investigation found the mayor and his staff sent and received thousands of iMessage texts between 2017 and 2021 and those messages were not captured -- and therefore not included -- in key public records requests about the protests, policing and other issues. Users can turn iMessage off and instead send texts outside Apple's proprietary system by toggling a button in the iPhone's settings." (11/15/22)

14) CA: UC officials call for mediator as strike by 48,000 academic workers causes systemwide disruptions
Source: Los Angeles Times

"About 48,000 unionized academic workers across the University of California's 10 campuses -- who perform much of the teaching and research at the state's premier higher education system -- walked off the job Monday morning, calling for better pay and benefits. In the nation's largest strike of the year, teaching assistants, postdoctoral scholars, graduate student researchers, tutors and fellows across the UC system took to the picket line, prompting canceled classes, shuttered labs and other academic disruptions just weeks before final exams. The strike, which union leaders said was the largest at any academic institution in history, also included workers at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. The massive work stoppage will continue Tuesday. ... After negotiations with the UAW continued throughout the weekend and Monday, UC officials are calling for a third-party mediator to be brought in." (11/14/22)

15) Palestine: Arab kills three Israeli squatters, wounds three in West Bank stabbing
Source: SFGate

"A knife-wielding Palestinian killed two Israelis in a stabbing Tuesday at a [squat] in the occupied West Bank, then stole a car as he tried to flee the scene and crashed it on a nearby highway, killing a third Israeli, officials said. The attack at the [squat] of Ariel also left three Israelis wounded. The Palestinian was shot and killed by an Israeli soldier as he tried to run away from the crash scene. The Zaka paramedic service said the three wounded were being treated in hospital and that they were in serious condition. It was the latest assault in a wave of Israeli-Palestinian violence this year that has seen Palestinian attackers target Israeli civilians and near nightly Israeli arrest raids that have fueled unrest in the occupied territory." 16) Division at G20 over bid to condemn Russia's Ukraine invasion
Source: Reuters

"Disagreement emerged at a Group of 20 (G20) summit on Tuesday as the United States and its allies backed a resolution condemning Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which Russia's foreign minister dismissed as unwarranted politicisation. The summit on the Indonesian island of Bali is the first G20 leaders' meeting since Russia sent its troops into Ukraine in February. The war, which Russia has described as a 'special military operation,' has overshadowed the meeting despite calls from host Indonesia for unity and a focus on action to resolve global economic problems like inflation, and food and energy security. ... Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who is heading his country's delegation in the absence of President Vladimir Putin, denounced the attempt to condemn Russia as politicisation by Western countries that had tried unsuccessfully to include it in the declaration." 17) Scott to challenge McConnell for GOP's top US Senate post
Source: Axios

"Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) announced at a closed-door conference lunch on Tuesday that he plans to challenge Mitch McConnell for Senate GOP leader, multiple people have told Axios. The announcement came as Senate Republicans were meeting to examine their underwhelming performance in the midterm elections, during which they failed to gain enough seats to take back a majority in the chamber. Scott's spokesperson McKinley Lewis and two other sources familiar with the announcement confirmed the plan to Axios. Scott, chairman of Senate Republicans' campaign arm, has openly feuded with McConnell for months over differing strategies to the midterm elections. Scott is also one of several conservative senators who have called on McConnell to delay the Senate GOP's leadership elections until after the Georgia runoff takes place in December." (11/15/22)

18) AZ: Democrat Hobbs defeats Republican Lake for governor
Source: NBC News

"Democratic Secretary of State Katie Hobbs has defeated Republican Kari Lake in Arizona's race for governor, NBC News projected Monday. Hobbs' victory is key for Democrats in a presidential battleground state and a rebuke to a prominent election denier -- although the closeness of the contest left the result up in the air for nearly a week. ... Lake, a MAGA firebrand and former local newscaster who closely linked her campaign to former President Donald Trump and his false claims of a rigged election in Arizona, ultimately fell short after polling in the final weeks of the campaign suggested she was grabbing the lead from Hobbs, who as secretary of state in 2020 vocally defended the state's election system and the accuracy of the count. About 90 minutes after NBC News called the race for Hobbs, Lake tweeted: 'Arizonans know BS when they see it.'" (11/14/22)

19) US House Republicans nominate McCarthy for Speaker
Source: The Hill

"House Republicans nominated Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) to be Speaker in a closed-door conference meeting on Tuesday after he faced a last-minute protest challenge from Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.), a former chair of the conservative House Freedom Caucus. McCarthy won easily, 188 to 31, in the internal conference meeting. But in the eyes of Biggs and his supporters, the goal was merely to demonstrate that McCarthy lacks the support to seize the gavel when the full House meets to choose the Speaker early next year. ... The secret-ballot House GOP Conference vote is just the first step for McCarthy to take hold of the gavel. He must win a majority in a public vote on the House floor -- at least 218 votes, assuming a fully sworn-in House -- on the first day of the next Congress on Jan. 3." (11/15/22)

20) Afghanistan: Regime to impose its interpretation of Sharia law across country
Source: CNN

"The Taliban has ordered judges in Afghanistan to fully impose their interpretation of Sharia Law, including potential public executions, amputations and flogging, a move experts fear will lead to a further deterioration of human rights in the impoverished country. Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid said Afghanistan's Supreme Leader Alaiqadar Amirul Momineen made the 'obligatory' command after meeting with judges to 'investigate the cases of thieves, kidnappers, and seditionists.' ... The Taliban's hardline implementation of the doctrine when the group was last in power from 1996 to 2001 included violent punishments, such as public executions, stoning, floggings and amputations." 21) The National Security State's War on the First Amendment
Source: Cato Institute
by Ted Galen Carpenter

"An especially ugly development taking place in the United States lies with the intelligence agencies and the FBI using social media platforms and other private organizations to stifle criticism of U.S. foreign policy or the conduct of policymakers. The standard argument has long been that violations of the First Amendment take place only when a governmental entity suppresses the expression of views of its people. Since Facebook, Twitter, Google, et al. are private corporations, the logic goes, the First Amendment's prohibition of censorship does not apply beyond the government, no matter how annoying the ideological bias evident on their sites might be. Defenders of the status quo fail to address the problem that occurs when a government agency or official colludes with or pressures a private actor to suppress certain information or viewpoints. Yet that is what has been taking place with greater frequency and severity." (11/15/22)

22) And Now We Return to Our Scheduled Programming: Presidential Election Theater
Source: Garrison Center
by Thomas L Knapp

"The day after every midterm congressional election, conventional wisdom turns to 'the presidential campaign starts today.' In reality, the 2024 presidential campaign has been simmering for quite some time already, with plausible contenders out campaigning for co-partisans, giving 'policy speeches' in Iowa and New Hampshire, and trying to raise their national profiles. I could even make a case that US president Joe Biden has been continuously running for president for 50 years now, and Donald Trump (who, as I write this, is expected to announce for 2024 any minute) for nearly 25. ... Exhausting, isn't it? It's always been this way, but it didn't used to be this way. That is, up-and-coming politicians have always seen the presidency in their futures ... but until the 20th century they mostly didn't 'campaign' for it in the way they do today." (11/15/22)

23) Donald Trump's Enablers Finally Realize He's a Loser Who Hurts the GOP
Source: The Daily Beast
by Matt Lewis

"In 2016, he lost the popular vote but became president by besting the wildly unpopular Hillary Clinton in the electoral college. In 2018, Republicans lost the midterms. In 2020, Trump lost re-election, and Republicans lost the U.S. Senate. And now, Republicans (thanks largely to Trump) have wildly underperformed in the 2022 midterms. Less appreciated is the toll Trump's presidency took on governorships and state legislatures. Tired of all the winning yet? Somehow, despite mounting evidence to the contrary, Trump (ever the master self-promoter) has preserved his image as a 'winner.' Until now. For years, his cult members ignored his evil deeds, rationalizing that 'at least he fights!' It seems they have finally realized the difference between fighting and winning. ... Unfortunately, getting rid of Trump (now that he is no longer of any use) will be as difficult as drop-kicking a crazy ex so you can pursue someone younger and hotter." (11/15/22)

"I wonder if my own government is being truthful about its actions in that part of the world? I wonder if my own government is in the wrong on this issue? I wonder if the news media are telling the truth right now? I wonder if the news media tell the truth about things generally? I wonder if the 'Evil Dictators versus Virtuous Liberal Democracies' framework I've been taught by teachers, pundits and politicians is the most accurate lens through which to view world events? Could I have been deceived about the way my government operates, at home and abroad? Is it possible that my beliefs about my society, my government and my world are completely wrong? What if the teachers, preachers and parents who helped form my worldview were relying on inaccurate information?" (11/15/22)

25) You Buy From Other Consumers, Not From Producers
Source: American Institute for Economic Research
by Michael Munger

"If you want something, you are usually buying from other potential purchasers, not the owner. Failing to understand that leads us to adopt wrong-headed policies such as anti-gouging laws, rent controls, and attempts to reduce inflation with price planning. We've known this truth for centuries. A famous example, Diocletian's 'Edict Concerning the Sale Price of Goods,' was apparently intended to hold down prices simply by forcing sellers to ignore the fact that someone else wanted to pay more than the buyer now in front of them. The economic reasoning for why this is a problem was clearly laid out by Eugen von Bohm-Bawerk in his widely cited (but largely unread) book, The Positive Theory of Capital." (11/15/22)

26) The GOP can't dump Trump -- but Republican voters can
Source: New York Post
by Rich Lowry

"Donald Trump is in his weakest political state since 2015 or early 2016. During his presidency, when he was at the center of countless intense controversies, he didn't blink once. He never showed fear or desperation. Both are clearly at work now in his gratuitous attacks on Ron DeSantis and Glenn Youngkin, neither of whom has done anything to him, besides presenting a viable alternative to his continued dominance of the GOP. Any Trump political obituaries are premature, though, until a verdict has been reached by the force that has buoyed him and lent him his overwhelming power in GOP politics -- Republican voters." 27) Diagnosing Modern Medicine
Source: Law & Liberty
by Ronald D Dworkin

"Ever since 2010, with the signing of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), I've harbored some contempt for health policy experts. During the forty years prior, tens of thousands of people earned advanced degrees in health policy. They wrote journal articles. They spoke at conferences. They spent years lecturing the rest of us on how to fix health care. Millions of dollars went into their training and later their salaries. The ACA was to be the return on our investment and the health policy field's crowning achievement, meant to fix health care once and for all. Yet when it arrived, the best these health policy experts could come up with, besides the insurance exchanges, was ... an expansion of Medicaid." (11/15/22)

29) Democracy by Tortoise
Source: Common Sense
by Paul Jacob

"The counting of ballots for 2022's General Election was pretty much wrapped up on election night. In most states. Yet, a week after election day, California election officials have barely counted half the ballots cast in a number of very close congressional districts as well as other state races. 'I anticipate it's going to take at least a couple of weeks,' offered a Sacramento County Elections spokesperson, 'if not three weeks, to process the bulk of the ballots that have come in.' Why the tortoise pace? ... 'We'd rather get it right,' says Secretary of State Alex Padilla (D), 'than get it fast.' Mr. Secretary, the problem is that the longer the election drags on without a winner being declared, the less confidence the public has in the process." (11/15/22)

by Davis Hunt

"This past weekend, Dave Chappelle gave a great opening monologue that I suggest watching. It's not without the standard, left-wing signposts that will make you wince, but all in all, it's interesting and entertaining. Chappelle, ... during his monologue, used Kanye West's comments as his tableaux to dance delicately along the line in the sand West reminded us of. 'If they're Black, then it's a gang. If they're Italian, it's a mob, but if they're Jewish, it's a coincidence and you should never speak about it,' Chappelle quips, walking right up to the line of acceptability. He then defuses the bomb, conceding: 'I know Jewish people have been through terrible things all over the world but but you can't blame that on Black Americans.'" (11/15/22)

by Mick West

"Let's say you're interested in UFOs. It's a fun hobby, but you'd like to monetize your efforts. What do you do? Historically, your avenues were limited. There was entertainment .... There was journalism, sometimes serious but mostly sensationalist. There were conferences and festivals where you could make money with attendance fees and UFO-themed merchandise. The final and far less common route was to get someone, preferably someone with a lot of money, to pay you to study the subject. ... [US Senator Harry Reid (D-NV) looped in Sens. Ted Stevens (R–Alaska), who said he saw a UFO as a pilot in World War II, and Daniel Inouye (D–Hawaii). The three legislators lobbied the Senate Appropriations Defense Subcommittee for funds, they got $22 million over five years, and a public solicitation was issued." (for publication 12/22)

32) How DeSantis can take down Trump
Source: The Hill
by John Feehery

"All roads to the Republican nomination go through Trump. He is not likely to step aside to let somebody else take the reins. He seems pretty convinced that the 2020 election was unjustly stolen from him. And the polls show him to be a formidable force in the GOP primary. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) put himself on the map with a convincing win in his reelection but also put himself in Trump's crosshairs. Sensing that DeSantis is gaining an edge with the Republican faithful, the former president branded him as Ron DeSanctimonious, a reference to an overly self-referential advertisement that implied that DeSantis was sent into electoral politics by God himself. ... How can DeSantis beat the man and thus, become the man? Well, first, he has to keep the pressure on Trump, not by engaging with the billionaire's childish antics, but by ignoring him." (11/15/22)

33) Asking the Right Post-Election Questions in a Nation Adrift
Source: Common Dreams
by Andrew Bacevich

"Britons mourned the recent passing of Queen Elizabeth II, and understandably so. The outpouring of affection for their long-serving monarch was more than commendable, it was touching. Yet count me among those mystified that so many Americans also professed to care. With all due respect to Queen Latifah, we decided way back in 1776 that we'd had our fill of royalty. Mere weeks after the death of Elizabeth II came the demise of another Elizabeth, better known as Liz, whose tenure as British prime minister shattered all previous records for brevity. Forty-four days after Her Majesty had asked her to form a government, Liz Truss announced her decision to step down. Cries of 'No, Liz, stay on!' were muted indeed, while she herself seemed to feel a sense of relief that her moment at the pinnacle of British politics had ended so swiftly." (11/15/22)

"This morning, a friend published a short post on Facebook, drawing attention to how it seemed to him the company was not even bothering any more to refer to the so-called 'independent fact-checkers' to justify their censorship. He had re-posted a clip where Fox reporter Tucker Carlson discussed the negative effectiveness of the Covid-19 vaccines, referring to peer-reviewed studies. The clip is available here. No reference to the twenty-something undergrads at the censorship agencies, just this label: 'Your post goes against our Community Standards on misinformation about vaccines ... 35) How to end the war in Ukraine? Sit down and talk. It's time.

"Russia has in effect already lost the war. President Vladimir Putin's dreams of annexing Ukraine are shattered. His military weakness has been exposed, his economy damaged, his country isolated, his support weakened. His troops have suffered horrendous casualties; their morale is broken, their ammunition short. Ukraine's advances on the battlefield have likewise come at a horrible cost. ... With an estimated price tag of $1 trillion to rebuild Ukraine, the imperative to bring the war to an end is apparent, and more voices are cautiously pushing for a diplomatic resolution." (11/15/22)

36) Economic Calculation and the Great Reset
Source: Ludwig von Mises Institute
by Robert Blumen

"A grand plan is advanced by the World Economic Forum (WEF). Its name, 'The Great Reset,' conveys the scope of this undertaking. Among its many audacious goals, it will 'offer insights to help inform all those determining the future state of global relations, the direction of national economies, the priorities of societies, the nature of business models and the management of a global commons.' That is clearly all for the good. But what are the particulars? A number of strikingly different researchers (James Corbett, Catherine Austin Fitts, Patrick Wood, Whitney Webb 2, Tessa Lena 2, and Jay Dyer) have articulated a remarkably consistent picture at a detailed level. The plan has three tentpoles: technocratic socialism run by a small circle of elites, a Malthusian view of population, and transhumanism." (11/15/22)

"The fault lines for the 2024 elections are already taking shape with the two parties in diametrically opposed positions and there is no greater divide than over parental rights. That stark difference was no more evident than in a tweet from Rep. Eric Swalwell, who mocked the notion of parents making major decisions in the education of their children. The California Democrat insisted that it is akin to 'putting patients in charge of their own surgeries? Clients in charge of their own trials?' Swalwell declared: 'Please tell me what I'm missing here ... This is so stupid.' What Rep. Swalwell, a lawyer, is missing is called informed consent." (11/15/22)

38) The Virtues of Smoke-Filled Rooms
Source: The American Conservative
by Frank DeVito

"In the past, political parties had internal processes to select their candidates and there was no caucus or primary by popular vote. Candidates were selected by party elites in proverbial (and often literal) smoke-filled rooms. In the name of popular participation and the input of more voters, the process evolved into the modern primary election. Even as primaries emerged as the norm, political parties continued to put a thumb on the scales by exerting political pressure to push weak candidates out, directing donors toward particular candidates, and formally endorsing the party-preferred candidate. There is a massive downside to the evolution of the modern primary system .... our primary elections consist of vicious attack ads, shallow stage debates, and quite a bit of pandering to the party base. It's hardly a recipe to get the best overall candidate for a general election." (11/15/22)

39) How Russia's war busted the myth of universality
Source: Responsible Statecraft
by Rajan Menon

"Washington's vaunted 'rules-based international order' has undergone a stress test following Russia's invasion of Ukraine and here's the news so far: it hasn't held up well. In fact, the disparate reactions to Vladimir Putin's war have only highlighted stark global divisions, which reflect the unequal distribution of wealth and power. Such divisions have made it even harder for a multitude of sovereign states to find the minimal common ground needed to tackle the biggest global problems, especially climate change. In fact, it's now reasonable to ask whether an international community connected by a consensus of norms and rules, and capable of acting in concert against the direst threats to humankind, exists. Sadly, if the responses to the war in Ukraine are the standard by which we're judging, things don't look good." (11/15/22)

41) Courts Use Increasingly Lawless Arguments [sic] to Block Student Debt Relief
Source: The American Prospect
by David Dayen

"On Monday, a three-judge panel of the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals instituted an emergency injunction of President Biden's student debt cancellation program. The verdict granted standing to sue to an alleged plaintiff which has said publicly and in writing that it had nothing to do with the lawsuit, and no relationship with the office that filed it. The ruling, in effect, turned a non-plaintiff into a plaintiff. It's the kind of decision that makes you wonder what the law is, and whether it matters what it says. But the conservative judiciary could see these same tactics used by determined plaintiffs with different priorities." Source: JimBovard.com
by James Bovard

"Hopes for a red wave of Republican victories on Election Day were shattered by the 28% advantage that voters in the 18-29 age group delivered to Democratic candidates. Two days after the election, Biden tweeted, 'I want to thank the young people of this nation' who voted for 'student debt relief.' Jon Cooper, a former top Biden campaign operative, tweeted, 'Young people: You saved our butts. THANK YOU.' Legions of young voters were energized to support Democrats by Biden's Aug. 24 announcement that he was forgiving up to $20,000 of student debt per person, which would cost taxpayers $400 billion-plus. ... on Monday afternoon, a federal appeals court in St. Louis unanimously voted to impose a nationwide 'injunction considering the irreversible impact the Secretary's debt forgiveness action would have' on 'Americans who pay taxes to finance the government.' Some activists believe Biden intentionally swindled young voters with a bait-and-switch scheme." (11/14/22)

44) Missile Defense Is Inherently Destabilizing and Provocative
Source: Eunomia
by Daniel Larison

"Hawks look at other states' growing arsenals and conclude that the answer is to increase missile defenses, but they are mistaken. Because it is relatively easy and cheaper to overwhelm these defensive systems, the other states can and do respond to expanded missile defense with still-larger and more sophisticated arsenals. We know this because it is has already been happening. The U.S. repudiation of the ABM Treaty was a serious unforced error by the Bush administration that encouraged other nuclear weapons states to expand and modernize their arsenals. Russia and China have both developed new delivery systems for the express purpose of getting around missile defenses because they perceive U.S. missile defenses as potentially negating part of their existing arsenals." 45) America Was Built on Coal. Now Biden Wants to Abolish It
Source: Town Hall
by Stephen Moore

"The one promise that President Joe Biden has faithfully kept is his pledge to 'close down' fossil fuels. We get two-thirds of our energy in America from fossil fuels, and almost one-third of our power comes from coal. That's quadruple the amount of energy we get from wind and solar, which are niche forms of energy. But Biden doesn't see it that way. He recently reiterated his pledge to end coal production altogether. 'No one is building new coal plants because they can't rely on it,' Biden said on Nov. 4 while in California. 'We're going to be shutting these plants down all across America and having wind and solar.' I hope the people in Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Wyoming are listening because thousands of mostly union jobs are associated with the coal plants he wants to shutter." (11/15/22)

"If you look up 'capitalism fights racism' in Google, the top search results will show articles like: 'Is Capitalism Racist,' 'Capitalism without Racism: Science or Fantasy,' and, 'The Rise of Capitalism and the Emergence of Racism.' Reading those titles, it would seem as if the most triumphant economic model the world has ever seen is rooted in a racist, hegemonic structure meant to benefit society's overlords. It's a good thing we have Google to open our eyes to this inhuman system. Facetiousness aside, (post)modern Western society views capitalism as the very ugly elephant in the room; it doesn't want to admit that it's a crucial cog that keeps civilization functioning, and would rather oggle pipe dreams like socialism through heavily rose-tinted glasses." 48) Their abortion crusade has cost the Republicans dearly
Source: spiked
by Ann Furedi

"The Republican Party's widespread opposition to abortion rights has cost it dearly in the Midterms. Indeed, the main achievement of Republican candidates' often extreme anti-abortion posturing has been to make doddery Joe Biden look like a champion of reproductive freedom. The folly of the Republicans' approach was clear long before last week's vote. As I argued last month, by demonising abortion, the GOP put itself on the highway to electoral hell. Anti-choice Republicans tend to view abortion as a symbol of America's supposed moral rot. This is certainly not the view of the majority." (11/14/22)

Source: In These Times
by Varshini Prakash

"Leading up to Election Day, many media outlets were talking about a coming 'red wave.' Republicans were predicted to take the House by huge margins and win the Senate. Young voters were expected to stay home. Instead, Democrats shocked the country. Election night was filled with progressive triumphs. Green New Deal champions Summer Lee and Greg Casar won in Pennsylvania and Texas; Maxwell Frost, the first Gen Z candidate in history, was elected in Florida; Lt. Gov. John Fetterman won his Senate race in Pennsylvania; and voters across the country passed ballot amendments to support abortion rights, marijuana legalization and the elimination of forced prison labor. While Democrats may ultimately lose the House, it still appears to be the best midterm election for an incumbent president since 2002. So what happened? Young people showed up." (11/15/22)

"Many Southern California cities are struggling to implement state mandates to increase housing production. Yet while the state needs more housing, it is politically challenging to squeeze more units into fully built out cities whose residents are accustomed to single family homes.
