1)  Israel: Knesset dissolves, schedules fifth election in four years
Source: Los Angeles Times

"Israel's parliament voted Thursday to dissolve itself and send the country to the polls in November for the fifth time in less than four years. Yair Lapid, Israel's foreign minister and architect of the outgoing coalition government, will become the country's caretaker prime minister just after midnight on Friday. He will be the 14th person to hold that office, taking over from Naftali Bennett, Israel's shortest serving prime minister. The government collapsed just over a year after it was formed in a historic move that saw longtime leader Benjamin Netanyahu ousted after 12 years in power by a coalition of ideologically diverse parties, the first to include an Arab faction. ... New elections will be held Nov. 1." (06/30/22)

2)  Giuliani associate Lev Parnas sentenced to 20 months in prison for fraud and campaign finance crimes
Source: CBS News

"Lev Parnas, an associate of Rudy Giuliani who was a figure in President Donald Trump's first impeachment investigation, was sentenced Wednesday to a year and eight months in prison for fraud and campaign finance crimes. Parnas, who had helped Giuliani connect with Ukrainian figures as part of a campaign to dig up dirt on President Joe Biden's son, had sought leniency on the grounds that he'd helped the Congressional probe. But prosecutors said the Soviet-born businessman's aid was in response to a subpoena and deserved little credit. Instead, they asked the judge to focus on a jury's finding that Parnas used the riches of a wealthy Russian to make illegal donations to politicians who might aid the launch of a legal recreational-marijuana business. Prosecutors had asked that Parnas be sentenced to more than six years." (06/29/22)

3)  Amazon, Rite Aid cap purchase of "Plan B" emergency contraceptives due to demand
Source: MarketWatch

"Amazon is limiting how many emergency contraceptives consumers can buy, joining other retailers who put in place similar caps following the Supreme Court decision overruling Roe v. Wade. Amazon's limit, which temporarily caps purchase of the contraceptives at three units per week, went into effect on Monday, a spokesperson for the e-commerce giant confirmed to The Associated Press. The company did not share further details on what emergency contraceptive products were limited for purchase, but a listing showed the cap applied to Plan B, the popular 'morning after' pill. A similar policy went into effect Monday at the drugstore chain Rite Aid, which has limited the purchase of Plan B pills to three units per customer due to increased demand, a company spokesperson said." 4)  Hong Kong: Beijing puppet regime bars some journalists from handover anniversary
Source: Seattle Times

"Hong Kong authorities, citing 'security reasons,' have barred more than 10 journalists from covering events and ceremonies this week marking the 25th anniversary of Hong Kong's return [sic] to China, according to the Hong Kong Journalists Association. The journalists represent at least seven media outlets, including international news agencies Reuters and Agence France-Presse and others from Hong Kong, the association said in a statement posted online late Tuesday. ... The rejections came as Hong Kong police confirmed that Chinese President Xi Jinping will visit the city for the anniversary of the former British colony's return [sic] to Chinese rule on July 1, 1997." [editor's note: The Chinese Communist Party regime had never ruled Hong Kong prior to being given it by the UK. Any "return" would have been to a surviving heir of the Qing dynasty – TLK] (06/29/22)

5)  SpaceX Mounts Starship Booster on Launch Tower Ahead of Orbital Test Flight
Source: Gizmodo

"SpaceX's massive Super Heavy booster stage is now standing (very) tall on the company's launch pad in south Texas, as it awaits a series of tests and final checks. The company is eager to launch the fully stacked Starship rocket for a flight test as early as July, but a number of regulatory hurdles still stand in the way. ... The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) recently cleared SpaceX for its site expansion, enabling the company to inch closer to the Starship orbital launch. But the FAA did hand SpaceX a list of about 75 environmental mitigation actions that it must complete, in addition to clearing safety hurdles, before it can be granted full permission to launch the gigantic rocket. Aside from the FAA, SpaceX is also facing pushback from the Army Corps of Engineers, who denied the company's application for site expansion." (06/29/22)

6)  FTC sues Walmart for facilitating fraud, costing consumers "hundreds of millions of dollars"
Source: AL.com

"The U.S. Federal Trade Commission has sued Walmart, alleging the company had allowed scam artists to use its money transfer services for fraud that cost consumers 'hundreds of millions of dollars.' Walmart, which offers some financial services, acts as an agent for money transfer services such as MoneyGram and Western Union. In its lawsuit, the FTC alleges that for years, the company turned a blind eye while scammers took advantage of its failure to properly secure the money transfer services offered at Walmart stores. The company did not properly train its employees, failed to warn customers, and used procedures that allowed fraudsters to cash out at its stores, according to the FTC's complaint." (06/29/22)

Source: ABC News

"Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer, the most senior member of the U.S. Supreme Court's liberal wing, said he will officially step down from the bench at noon on Thursday, relinquishing his duties as a justice and clearing the way for the swearing-in of the nation's first [b]lack female justice, Ketanji Brown Jackson. ... Breyer has long been revered and celebrated as a consensus-seeker and happy warrior throughout his 27 years on the court. He has also been one of the few justices to be a regular attendee at State of the Union addresses before a joint session of Congress." (06/29/22)

8)  AZ: Ducey OKs $18 billion budget upping school, infrastructure spending
Source: Tulsa World

"Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey on Tuesday signed into law his eighth and final state budget, an $18 billion spending plan that uses a record surplus to invest in education and infrastructure while lowering state debt and preparing for an economic downturn. The massive spending plan marks a stark change in fortunes for a governor who took office in 2015 amid historic deficits that forced deep cuts to public services. It passed the House and Senate last week with overwhelming bipartisan support for the first time in years. With a surplus topping $5 billion, Ducey and lawmakers approved an array of new spending and debt reduction. That includes $544 million for border security [sic], roughly half of it for a wall, and $1 billion for highway construction, including widening Interstate 10 north of Casa Grande. State employees will get a raise, many for the first time in a decade." (06/29/22)

9)  Merger vote at Spirit could reshape discount airline market
Source: Durango Herald

"The prospect of a takeover of Spirit Airlines threatens to upend the cheap-fare end of the industry much like a series of mergers among big airlines reduced choices for travelers. Spirit is the largest budget airline in the United States, but its days as a stand-alone company appear numbered. The big question is whether it is sold to fellow discounter Frontier Airlines or to JetBlue, which operates more like the four giants that dominate the U.S. airline business. The outcome could determine how many choices travelers have for the lowest fares. ... Spirit shareholders are scheduled to vote Thursday on whether to approve a stock-and-cash offer from Frontier that is currently worth about $22 per share, or $2.4 billion, and give Spirit shareholders 48.5% of the combined airline. Spirit's board has continued to support the deal in the face of a hostile bid from JetBlue worth $33.50 per share, or $3.6 billion." (06/29/22)

10) Vatican: Pelosi takes communion at papal Mass, defying some US bishops
Source: Reuters

"Nancy Pelosi, the speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives who is banned from communion in her home city of San Francisco because she supports abortion rights, received the sacrament at a Mass said by Pope Francis on Wednesday. A witness said the speaker, who is Catholic and visiting Rome, received communion from a priest in a section of St. Peter's Basilica during a papal Mass on the feast of St. Peter and Paul. The pope does not give communion himself at such ceremonies. Although Pelosi is barred from receiving it in San Francisco by the city's conservative archbishop, Salvatore Cordileone, she regularly takes communion at a parish in Washington, D.C., where the archbishop of the U.S. capital allows it. Francis has no control over who receives communion during papal Masses and it was not clear if he was aware that Pelosi was in the church." (06/29/22)

11) NY: Cornell University removes Gettysburg Address, Lincoln bust from library after alleged complaint
Source: Fox News

"A bust of President Abraham Lincoln and a plaque of the Gettysburg address have been removed from a Cornell University library. 'Someone complained, and it was gone,' Cornell biology professor Randy Wayne told the College Fix of the matter. The bust of Lincoln and the bronzed plaque of the former president's historic 1863 address had been in the Kroch Library, where the university's Division of Rare and Manuscript Collections is located, since 2013. Wayne said that he noticed the display was missing a few weeks ago and asked librarians what happened. He was told the display was removed after some type of complaint, but did not provide further details, according to the College Fix. The communications team for Cornell told Fox News Digital that the display was a 'temporary exhibit' installed to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Gettysburg Address in 2013." (06/29/22)

12) France: Verdicts due for 20 accused of mass murder in Paris attacks trial
Source: BBC News [UK state media]

"A French court is preparing to hand down verdicts against 20 men accused of involvement in the 2015 Paris attacks which saw 130 people killed. Among the accused is Salah Abdeslam, seen as the key suspect and the only suspected attacker to have survived. He told the court this week that he was 'not a murderer, or a killer' and that to convict him of that would be 'an injustice.' The trial (the biggest in modern French history) began last September. For more than nine months, victims, journalists, and the families of the dead have lined up outside the specially-built courtroom in Paris to piece together the story of the worst attack in France since World War Two. The combination of gun and bomb attacks across bars, restaurants, the national football stadium and Bataclan music venue on 13 November 2015 saw hundreds injured alongside those killed." (06/29/22)

13) European Groups Push Leaders to Strengthen Abortion Rights
Source: Common Dreams

"Appalled by the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to strike down Roe v. Wade and concerned about the dark money-fueled global assault on abortion rights, advocacy groups from 28 European countries demanded Tuesday that their leaders take immediate steps to shield and strengthen access to reproductive care throughout the continent. Expressing 'profound solidarity' with people across the U.S. who will be or already have been harmed by the right-wing high court's unpopular ruling, the groups noted in an open letter that several European countries -- including Liechtenstein, Malta, Monaco, and Poland -- also have in place 'highly restrictive laws in disregard of international human rights obligations and public health evidence.' While 'the general trajectory across Europe has been to improve laws and policies on abortion,' the groups continued, 'the need to reinforce and protect reproductive rights and abortion access across Europe is ongoing.'" 14) US FCC gang shot-caller wants Apple and Google to remove TikTok from their app stores
Source: CNBC

"A leader of the U.S. Federal Communications Commission said he has asked Apple and Google to remove TikTok from their app stores over China-related data security concerns. The wildly popular short video app is owned by Chinese company ByteDance, which faced U.S. scrutiny under President Donald Trump. ... 'TikTok is not what it appears to be on the surface. It is not just an app for sharing funny videos or meme. That's the sheep's clothing,' he said in the letter. 'At its core, TikTok functions as a sophisticated surveillance tool that harvests extensive amounts of personal and sensitive data.' Alphabet, Apple and TikTok did not immediately respond to CNBC requests for comment." (06/29/22)

15) Afghanistan: Taliban and US officials to meet amid quake relief efforts
Source: SFGate

"Afghan finance and central bank officials from the Taliban-led government departed for Qatar on Wednesday to meet with U.S. officials, the Taliban said. The meeting follows last week's deadly earthquake, which brought into focus how relief and emergency aid efforts have stumbled under the weight of the country's spiraling economic woes. The quake in southeastern Afghanistan killed around 770 people, according to U.N. figures, though the Taliban put the death toll at closer to 1,150, with thousands injured. The U.N. says 155 children are among those killed in what was the deadliest earthquake to hit the impoverished country in two decades. Several thousand homes were destroyed or badly damaged in Paktika and Khost provinces. Despite international aid efforts by U.N. agencies and countries in the region, survivors say they need more help to subsist." (06/29/22)

16) Ecuador: Lasso survives impeachment vote, ends talks with indigenous leader
Source: France 24 [French state media]

"Ecuador's President Guillermo Lasso survived an attempt by opposition lawmakers to oust him on Tuesday after he insisted his government will not negotiate further with an indigenous leader to end more than two weeks of protests. The protests have been linked to eight deaths and have led to food and medicine shortages and slashed oil output. 'We will not return to dialogue with Leonidas Iza, who only defends his political interests and not those of his base,' Lasso said, referring to the indigenous leader. 'To our indigenous brothers -- you deserve more than an opportunist for a leader.' Largely indigenous demonstrators have been marching to protest against high fuel and food prices since June 13 and at least eight people have died in connection with the marches, including a soldier killed early on Tuesday." Source: Fox News

"Two Mexican nationals living in the U.S. illegally [sic] have been charged with firearm offenses after dozens of migrants were found dead in an abandoned semi-truck in Texas earlier this week. Juan Francisco D'Luna-Bilbao and Juan Claudio D'Luna-Mendez, who both allegedly overstayed B-2 visas, have been charged through separate criminal complaints as illegal [sic] immigrants in possession of firearms, according to court documents filed Tuesday in the U.S. District Court in the Western District of Texas. Federal prosecutors have asked that both men be held without bond, The Hill reported. They could face a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine if convicted on the current charges. A third man, believed to be the big rig's driver, was also reportedly arrested and charged with human smuggling." (06/29/22)

"Tina Peters, the Colorado county clerk who flogged election conspiracy theories and was then indicted for allegedly breaching her own voting machines, lost her primary bid to become the secretary of state. And then she did exactly what you would expect: She denied she lost, cried fraud, and vowed to keep fighting. 'It's not over,' Peters reportedly told supporters at her watch party, while she was 15 points behind the actual winner, Pam Anderson, a former Jefferson County clerk. 'I'm sorry we had faith in the system once again.' ... The trouncing comes three months after Peters was indicted by a grand jury on 10 misdemeanor and felony charges stemming from her role in the breaching of election machines in Mesa following the 2020 election." 19) UK: Johnson blames "toxic masculinity" for Ukraine war
Source: BBC News [UK state media]

"Russian President Vladimir Putin would not have invaded Ukraine if he were a woman, Boris Johnson has claimed. The UK prime minister said the 'crazy, macho' invasion was a 'perfect example of toxic masculinity' and he called for 'more women in positions of power.' But Downing Street said there was 'not a deliberate policy' to publicly belittle Mr Putin. Mr Johnson's comments come ahead of a Nato meeting where allies will discuss how to respond to future threats. At the summit in Madrid, he is set to call on fellow members of the defensive alliance to ramp up defence spending. The UK's defence spending is projected to reach 2.3% of GDP (a key measure of the annual income of a country) this year as a result of defence industry investment and £1.3bn in military support for Ukraine, the government said." 20) Philippines: Regime orders news site Rappler to shut down

"Nobel Peace Prize laureate and journalist Maria Ressa said Tuesday the Philippine government has ordered her news organization Rappler to shut down. Ressa, CEO and founder of Rappler, released a statement during the East-West Center's International Media Conference in Honolulu saying the Philippine Securities and Exchange Commission (PSEC) had upheld its earlier ruling to revoke the news site's operating license. ... Ressa has been engulfed in legal battles in recent years and has said she has been targeted because of her news site's critical reports on outgoing President Rodrigo Duterte's administration. In January 2018, the Philippine SEC revoked the registration of Rappler over alleged violation of foreign ownership rules. The newsroom continued to operate despite the revocation." (06/28/22)

21) The CDC Is Deceiving the Public Again
Source: RealClearPolitics
by Betsy McCaughey

"If you have to go to the hospital, you don't want to end up in a dangerous one. The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention knows which hospitals are riskiest, but it's hiding that information from you -- your safety be damned. The feds seem to think they work for the hospital industry, not for you. Whenever a hospital has a superbug outbreak, the CDC conceals the hospital's identity, referring only to 'Hospital A.' A lot of good that does patients looking for safe care, especially patients with compromised immune systems, cancer, or HIV. ... Now the CDC is playing statistical tricks to hide how many people have caught COVID in hospitals and to block the public from seeing which hospitals have had the biggest problem." (06/29/22)

22) Does Targeted Killing "Work?"
Source: Eunomia
by Daniel Larison

"As with anything a government does, when someone says that something 'works' our first question should always be, 'works to do what?' Do sanctions work? If the goal is to impoverish and starve people, then they work very well in their cruel, sadistic way. If it is to achieve constructive changes in policy or changes in regime, they usually never work. The same goes for assassinations, as our government's practice of targeted killing with drones should have already taught us long ago. Killing someone at the top can temporarily disrupt a terrorist organization, but in practice it tends to make that organization more dangerous and radical. Leaders can be replaced, and others will step up to fill the role that the dead men had. Short-term 'successes' often lead to long-term failure. The entire 'war on terror' is a huge, bloody cautionary tale that you cannot kill your way out of these problems." (06/29/22)

23) NIMBY, YIMBY or MIMBY?
Source: EconLog
by Scott Sumner

"Last week, I visited Venice, a neighborhood in LA that is full of wealthy tech entrepreneurs and homeless people. While strolling along one of the canals, I noticed a sign, 'Stop the Monster.' ... The monster is a proposed 140 housing project .... Roughly half the units would go to the homeless, while the other half would be provided to low-income workers and artists. The LA Times suggests that the project would cost $75 million, or just over $500,000 per unit, while critics suggest that the full cost could be as high as $1.4 million per unit. ... critics often complained that the project was an example of YIMBYism, the advocacy of more housing construction as a way of addressing America's housing crisis. I consider myself a YIMBY, but have trouble understanding the logic behind this particular housing proposal." (06/29/22)

24) Maximalists Threaten Federalist Compromise on Abortion
Source: Town Hall
by Jacob Sullum

"When the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade last week, it ostensibly freed states to regulate abortion as they see fit. But that won't be possible if Congress manages to impose one abortion policy on the entire country or if states succeed in applying their own laws beyond their territory. Both power moves are constitutionally dubious. ... If Democrats had the necessary votes in the Senate, they would codify a right to abortion that goes even further than the limits that Roe imposed on state legislators. You might wonder where Congress gets the authority to dictate abortion policies across the country. A bill that the House passed last year locates that authority in the power to regulate interstate commerce." (06/29/22)

25) Human Smuggling is Underrated
Source: Bet On It
by Bryan Caplan

"The sensationalist view that human smugglers do nothing but 'prey' upon migrants is plainly overblown. After all, millions of people successfully reach their destination with smugglers' help. This couldn't happen if smugglers consistently defrauded their customers. ... If I ever had to do business with a human smuggler, I'd still be scared. I freely admit it. I would not, however, be scared out of my mind. Illegal markets don't work as well as legal markets. But they're better than nothing. A lot better." (06/29/22)

26) Empire To Expand NATO In Response To War Caused By NATO Expansion
Source: Caitlin Johnstone, Rogue Journalist
by Caitlin Johnstone

"Turkey's President Erdoğan has officially withdrawn Ankara's objection to the addition of Finland and Sweden to NATO membership, with the three countries signing a trilateral memorandum at a NATO summit in Madrid. The removal of Erdoğan's objection was reportedly obtained via significant natsec concessions from the other two nations largely geared toward facilitating Turkey's ongoing conflict with regional Kurdish factions, and it removes the final obstacle to Finland and Sweden beginning the process of becoming NATO members. Finland's addition will more than double the size of NATO's direct border with Russia, a major national security concern for Moscow. 'Sweden and Finland moved rapidly to apply to NATO in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, reversing decades of security policy and opening the door to the alliance's ninth expansion since 1949,' Axios reports." "It's good to watch your state lose its lead as a school choice innovator not because it's backsliding, but because other states are making it easier for families to pick education options for their kids. It's even better when your state reclaims the lead through increased freedom. Last week, my state of Arizona did just that with the passage of a law expanding the use of education savings accounts (ESA) that let education funding follow students to their families' preferred learning environments rather than locking them into one-size-fits-some government institutions." 28) Who Really Makes US Foreign Policy? Who Benefits and Who Loses?
Source: Ludwig von Mises Institute
by Joseph Solis-Mullen

"In a piece of news that shocked the mainstream media, but which shocked no one familiar with the academic industry writ large, retired US Army general John Allen was forced to resign as president of the Brookings Institution after it was revealed the FBI was investigating him for lobbying on behalf of the Qatari monarchy. Of course, the real news, scarcely noted by the Washington Post, New York Times, or any other purported paper of record, is that Allen was only really in trouble because he hadn't fulfilled the pro forma legal requirements for those lobbying the US government on behalf of a foreign agent or government. ... The truth is the powerful Israel and Saudi Arabia lobbies have been able to steer US policy in directions clearly at odds with the best interests of the American people for decades." (06/29/22)

29) Raging Democrats Mourn Their Lost Sacrament: Abortion
Source: JohnKassNews
by John Kass

"Do you recognize the image at the top of this column? Of course, you do. It is not a mass of cells. It is not an 'it.' It is a baby, a human life in a mother's womb, a life that began at conception. And it is waiting to be born. But idea of that baby allowed to be born and millions of other such babies, has triggered intense rage among the Democratic Socialists for the past several days, since the U.S. Supreme Court voted 6-3 to reverse Roe V. Wade. I've wanted to be charitable to the other side. We have different views on a most contentious issue. And I am a Greek Orthodox. Sen. Dick Durbin might ask me if I am an 'Orthodox Christian.' But he already knows. I'm a father who is pro-life. I've never hidden it. And I've worried about the spiritual cost of abortion on our culture. Readers know this about me." (06/29/22)

30) The Age of Deference to Experts Is Over
Source: Brownstone Institute
by Michael Tomlinson

"There has been a general feeling that in a public health emergency, anything goes. But on the contrary, in a public health emergency, when so much is at stake, the utmost care needs to be taken to find the right path, and not to fall into error, leading to unintended consequences. This involves exploring different paths rather than mandating one path and preventing any possibility of reconsideration. We should certainly take the advice of the best experts we can find. But when governments are considering imposing coercive measures, experts can only advise, they should not rule." (06/29/22)

31) More on America's Culture of Immigration Death
Source: Future of Freedom Foundation
by Jacob G Hornberger

"Yesterday, I wrote about the deaths of 46 immigrants, who died of dehydration in the back of a tractor-trailer in Texas. The immigrants had illegally entered the United States. They were being illegally transported when they died in the back of that tractor-trailer. As I wrote yesterday, those deaths are a direct consequence of the federal government's system of immigration controls. ... Not surprisingly, there are a spate of articles lamenting the deaths of those immigrants. But like similar articles written in response to previous deaths of illegal immigrants who have died in the back of tractor-trailers, the people doing the lamenting just don't get it. They continue to believe that the answer to these deaths lies in reforming the federal government's immigration-control system." (06/29/22)

"I spend a good deal of time with former senior government officials, both uniformed and civilian. Almost all of them are humble about their accomplishments, and have a good attitude about what they can expect in the private sector. But there are also exceptions. I have come across a few who reason that, having enjoyed success in either uniform or elsewhere in government, they should be rewarded for that achievement and status in the private sector. These people tend to make decisions, usually of a money-grubbing variety, that reflect poorly not just on themselves but on their peers and the institutions from which they hail." (06/29/22)

33) Are Democrats Really Clueless About Impending Election Doom?
Source: Common Dreams
by Norman Mathews

"Armageddon comes November 8. Pundits and progressives have been warning Democrats for months that if they don't change course and achieve significant legislation promised in 2020, they will go down in flames on election day, along with our democracy. The tone of these warnings is imbued with the implication that the party, and especially President Biden, either doesn't believe this or that it is flummoxed on how to avoid the calamity. But is this case? First on the list is that enacting progressive legislation would alienate Democrats' corporate puppet masters. To buy into this misconception, one must assume that the party has no access to polls, political advisors, focus groups, and constituent complaints or that the gerontocracy currently in control simply can't comprehend this inevitability. Time to take off the rose-colored bifocals and see the world as it really is." (06/29/22)

34) Declare Your Independence from Tyranny, America

by John Whitehead

"Imagine living in a country where armed soldiers crash through doors to arrest and imprison citizens merely for criticizing government officials. Imagine that in this very same country, you're watched all the time, and if you look even a little bit suspicious, the police stop and frisk you or pull you over to search you on the off chance you're doing something illegal. Keep in mind that if you have a firearm of any kind (or anything that resembled a firearm) while in this country, it may get you arrested and, in some circumstances, shot by police. If you're thinking this sounds like America today, you wouldn't be far wrong. However, the scenario described above took place more than 200 years ago, when American colonists suffered under Great Britain's version of an early police state." (06/29/22)

35) The Policies Of Price Stability Result In Economic Instability
Source: Cobden Centre
by Dr. Frank Shostak

"For most commentators the role of central authorities is to make the economy as stable as possible. What do they mean by economic stability? Economic stability refers to an absence of excessive fluctuations. An economy with constant output growth and low and stable price inflation is likely to be regarded as stable. An economy with frequent boom-bust cycles and variable price inflation would be considered unstable. ... We suggest that by means of monetary policies that aim at stabilizing the price level the Fed actually undermines the workings of the market economy." (06/29/22)

36) The "Unlivable" World of Global Warming Is Much Wealthier Than Today
Source: American Institute for Economic Research
by James E Hanley

"Global warming is real, and it is a problem. But how big of a problem? According to some, humanity's very existence seems to be at stake. When our responses to global warming snap like a rubber band, warns economist Paul Krugman, 'then the megadeaths will begin,' a claim he says, is not hyperbole, just realism. A popular book warns of an uninhabitable earth. And United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has used his bully pulpit to inform us that we are 'firmly on track towards an unlivable world.' ... But does the science really say that the earth will become unlivable? More specifically, does the authoritative Sixth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report give us even the slightest indication that the world is at serious risk of becoming uninhabitable due to our current energy policies? The unequivocal answer is 'no.'" (06/29/22)

"I don't consider the Supreme Court to be credible, and haven't for years. Not since I recovered from the brainwashing I endured as an inmate in 'public' schools. The Supreme Court stole for themselves the power to be the final say on what the Constitution means back in 1803 -- this power wasn't theirs to exercise, but belonged to the people. They didn't like this state of affairs so they changed things so they'd have more power. The public was fooled into going along. Sometimes the Court gets things partly right, even under these conditions." (06/29/22)

"Greed, a favorite movie theme of movies, can create gold when mixed with ego, power, and an artful filmmaker. Few films show this successful combination more artistically and viscerally than Baz Luhrmann's film Elvis. The movie also seems destined for commercial success. ... More controversially, Luhrman tells the Presley story using the point of view of Col. Tom Parker (Tom Hanks), the entertainer's personal manager for more than two decades. 40) G7 and the Desperation Stage of Russian Sanctions
Source: CounterPunch
by Jack Rasmus

"Biden and the other G7 leaders are meeting in the Bavarian Alps this week. Apart from proclaiming they'll never give up supporting Zelensky and Ukraine, G7 leaders announced they were planning two new sanctions on Russia. Like most of the previous six phases of sanctions the purpose of the latest is to deprive Russia of revenues from exports. So far sanctions haven't been all that successful in that regard, at least in the shorter term. ... So the G7 in Bavaria have come up with two more schemes to try to reduce Russian export revenues. But the thin mountain air must be affecting their thinking. The two new schemes are among the most desperate and economically absurd sanction ideas spawned thus far." (06/29/22)

41) Lack of Paid Leave Complicates Interstate Abortion Travel
Source: The American Prospect
by David Dayen

"Since the Dobbs ruling taking away a woman's right to determine her own medical care, a handful of large corporations have stepped up to provide up to $4,000 in travel expenses for employees who need an abortion but have no access to one in their states. ... The stance from these companies (mostly big financial companies, movie studios, entertainment conglomerates, tech firms, and a few large retailers) has led to various questions. First, is this just greenwashing-style PR to look socially conscious in public, while funding the politicians who pushed to overturn Roe v. Wade behind the scenes? Is this yet another corporate benefit that will have to be consistently bargained, and used by companies like Starbucks as a perk only for those workers not uppity enough to want a union?" 42) How can the war in Ukraine end? Let's count the ways.
Source: Responsible Statecraft
by Rajan Menon

"If -- and, of course, I have to stress the conditional here, given repeatedly unforeseen developments in this war -- Putin's army takes the entire Donbas region plus the whole Black Sea coast, rendering Ukraine smaller and landlocked, he might declare his 'special military operation' a success, proclaim a ceasefire, order his commanders to fortify and defend the new areas they occupy, and saddle the Ukrainians with the challenge of expelling the Russian troops or settling for a de facto partition of the country. ... The Russian president does control additional chunks of Ukrainian territory, but he may hope to find some way of easing Western sanctions and also avoiding being wholly dependent on China. These circumstances might revive the neutrality option. ... A new Russian leader might eventually cut a deal, providing sanctions are lifted, but assuming that Putin's exit would be a magic bullet is unrealistic." (06/29/22)

43) It's Time To Talk to North Korea Again
Source: Antiwar.com
by Daniel Larison

"North Korea may be preparing to conduct a new nuclear test in the near future, and if that happens there will be an outpouring of predictable hawkish demands that the United States take some punitive action in response. The Biden administration should ignore what the hawks want, but it should also revise its policy towards North Korea and make a serious effort to revive negotiations with Pyongyang. The appointment of a former nuclear negotiator, Choe Son Hui, as North Korea's new foreign minister suggests that there could be an opening for renewed engagement if the US and South Korea are willing to respond constructively. The alternative to a new diplomatic initiative is to keep North Korea policy on its current mindless course until there is an accident or miscalculation that creates a new crisis." (06/29/22)

44) Dangers Faced by Illegal [sic] Migrants are Caused by Immigration Restrictions
Source: The Volokh Conspiracy
by Ilya Somin

"The recent tragic deaths of some 50 undocumented migrants in a truck in Texas highlight the perils of illegal migration. Republicans such as Texas Gov. Greg Abbott have rushed to blame President Biden's 'open border policies.' The truth is the exact opposite. Most of the dangers of illegal migration arise precisely because it is illegal. If the US actually had an 'open border' policy, these 50 people would almost certainly be alive today. They would not have had to rely on shady smugglers to secretly cross into the United States. They could have just done so openly, using conventional modes of transportation." (06/28/22)

45) SCOTUS just quietly slashed your Sixth Amendment rights
Source: The Hill
by Emily Galvin-Almanza

"The Supreme Court's recent assault on our rights has gone far beyond Roe and Dobbs. The Supreme Court quietly issued a 6-3 ruling recently on Shinn v. Martinez Ramirez, siding against two Arizonans on death row who sought to challenge their convictions in federal court after receiving shoddy legal support. The majority's rationale, which was based on a 1996 federal law, was that state sovereignty and legal expediency must be protected at all costs. Unfortunately, those costs are clear. The Court's ruling slashed Americans' constitutional right to effective counsel by eviscerating the life-saving accountability mechanism that allows people to appeal unjust rulings. The six conservative justices have plainly prioritized the legal system's power to convict and kill over our human right to live." (06/29/22)

46) Sri Lanka's Death by National Debt
Source: Independent Institute
by Craig Eyermann

"The nation of Sri Lanka was many things. A beautiful country, international tourism was a major industry. A fertile land, it grew enough rice to feed all its people. Prosperous, it earned its place as an upper-middle income nation. Then it all went to hell. ... Politicians set on increasing spending without having the tax revenues to cover the cost get the money they want by borrowing it. Sri Lanka's national debt ballooned as it increasingly borrowed from foreign lenders to fund Rajapaksa's spending. But in 2020, the coronavirus pandemic devastated the country's economy, especially its large tourism industry, a major source of foreign currency. Without that foreign currency coming in, Sri Lanka's government was soon starved of the money it was counting on to pay its loans. Rajapaksa's response to that shortage of cash drove the next stage of Sri Lanka's economic collapse." (06/28/22)

"HoH filing status lowers the tax liability of unmarried individuals who care for a dependent. Prominent voices on the left and right have called for the filing status to be scrapped as part of a broader overhaul of child benefits. The broad ideological appeal stems from the poor design of the HoH status. It not only disproportionately benefits the rich and fails to account for the number of children in a home, but also discourages marriage and needlessly increases the tax system's complexity. Head of household filing status reflects outdated policy design principles." (06/28/22)

For 23 of those years, Joel was at the top of the masthead, and his insights and observations were often the first thing you read when you opened an issue. But if Joel was a constant, In These Times was constantly changing -- from newsprint broadsheet to glossy magazine, from biweekly to monthly, from teetering on the brink of extinction to becoming the healthy publication it is today.
