1)  US FDA gang prepares big pro-cancer push to get teens back on real tobacco
Source: Axios

"The Food and Drug Administration is poised to sweep Juul e-cigarette products off store shelves, the Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday, in what could be a major turning point for an agency that's taken a sluggish, at times disjointed approach to regulating the vaping industry. ... The FDA is ready to deny Juul a marketing order for its menthol and tobacco-flavored products after a two-year review that weighed the products' benefits for adult smokers against risks to teens, the WSJ reported, citing people familiar with the matter." 2)  Bulgaria: Regime loses no-confidence vote; early elections loom
Source: Reuters

"A no-confidence vote on Wednesday toppled Bulgaria's government and Prime Minister Kiril Petkov, who had pledged to tackle corruption and took an unusually strong stance against Russia. Opposition lawmakers brought down the government -- which took power six months ago -- on a 123-116 vote after the ruling coalition lost its majority over disputes on budget spending and whether Bulgaria should unlock North Macedonia's EU accession. ... Petkov has rejected any coalition talks with opposition parties in the chamber but will seek defections from lawmakers to garner enough support for a new government and avoid early elections. President Rumen Radev is required to call elections within two months and appoint a caretaker administration should Petkov fail to cobble together a majority for a new cabinet and if two other parties in parliament cannot form a government." 3)  Biden calls for three-month federal gas tax "holiday"
Source: CBS News

"President Joe Biden called on Congress Wednesday to suspend federal gasoline and diesel taxes for three months -- an idea that's intended to ease financial pressures at the pump, but that also reveals the political toxicity of high gas prices in an election year. He is also urging states to suspend their own gas taxes or provide similar relief, the White House said. ... At issue is the 18.4 cents-per-gallon federal tax on gas and the 24.4 cents-per-gallon federal tax on diesel fuel. If the gas savings were fully passed along to consumers, people would save roughly 3.6% at the pump with prices averaging about $5 a gallon nationwide. But many economists and lawmakers from both parties view the idea of a gas tax holiday with skepticism." (06/22/22)

4)  Russia: Drone strike hits refinery near Ukraine
Source: ABC News

"A drone strike caused a fire at a refinery in southwestern Russia near the border with Ukraine on Wednesday, but no one was hurt and the blaze was contained quickly, officials said. The fire engulfed industrial equipment at the Novoshakhtinsk oil processing plant in the Rostov-on-Don region. The authorities said that dozens of firefighters extinguished the flames in a half-hour and no one was hurt. The refinery said in a statement that the fire was caused by a strike carried out by two drones, describing it as a 'terrorist' act. It didn't give further details, but the state news agency Tass said that two Ukrainian drones flew over the plant and one of them slammed into a heat exchanger, triggering the fire." (06/22/22)

5)  China: Regime censors require "influencers" to present "qualifications" for topic approval
Source: CNBC

"Online influencers in China must now have a qualification to talk about certain topics such as law and medicine, regulators said Tuesday. For content that requires a 'higher professional level,' livestreamers must hold a corresponding qualification to talk about those subjects, China's State Administration of Radio and Television and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism said in a joint release. Influencers must show those qualifications to the livestreaming platform they use. Those qualifications then need to be reviewed by the platform. ... The latest rules from the two Chinese government agencies lays out a 'code of conduct' for online influencers. Livestreamers are not allowed to publish content that weakens or distorts the leadership [sic] of the Chinese Communist Party, for example." (06/23/22)

6)  Judge dismisses latest bid from Fox to toss Dominion lawsuit
Source: The Hill

"A judge in Delaware has dismissed the latest attempt from Fox Corp. to throw out a lawsuit from voting systems company Dominion, which is suing the conservative media giant for defamation for claims made on its airwaves falsely suggesting it was engaged in fraud during the 2020 election. In an opinion issued on Tuesday, Delaware Superior Court Judge Eric M. Davis denied a motion from Fox Corp. to dismiss the suit, saying Dominion had sufficiently shown Rupert and Lachlan Murdoch, who own and operate Fox News'[s] parent company, might have knowingly allowed unproven claims about voter fraud to be aired on the channel. ... Dominion sued the network last March for $1.6 billion. In a motion in December to dismiss the case, which was denied, Fox argued it 'did not create allegations against Dominion,' but that they were reporting on the remarks of others, including former President Trump and his supporters." 7)  SC: Cunningham seeks age limit for "geriatric" politicians
Source: Modesto Bee

"Democratic gubernatorial nominee Joe Cunningham is proposing an age limit for South Carolina politicians -- a cap that would cut off the 75-year-old incumbent Gov. Henry McMaster -- and making a veiled argument that even fellow Democrats like President Joe Biden are 'staying in office way past their prime.' 'Our country and our state are being run by a geriatric oligarchy, people who stay in office way past their prime,' Cunningham says in a campaign video, provided Wednesday to The Associated Press ahead of its public release. 'Some of these folks have been clinging onto power for 30, 40, even 50 years,' Cunningham says. ... Cunningham proposes instituting a 72-year-old age limit for South Carolina politicians, a retirement bar already in effect for the state's judges, and one that would take a constitutional amendment, approved by voters, to implement." 8)  Israel: Knesset passes initial vote to disperse
Source: Times of Israel [Israel]

"The coalition led by Prime Minister Naftali Bennett cleared the first major hurdle on its path to ending the current government on Wednesday, passing the first of the four votes necessary to disperse the Knesset and force snap elections. ... The dissolution process requires four separate votes and two committee reviews .... The Knesset is expected to complete the process next week, perhaps as early as Monday. ... The opposition is making last-ditch attempts to outflank the government and end the coalition not through dissolution, but rather by swapping out the current government with one of its own. The Likud-led opposition and its leader Netanyahu have an option to shortcut elections and immediately take over the reins of power: If the right-wing religious 55-seat bloc can attract at least six more coalition MKs, it can immediately form a new government within the current Knesset." 9)  WI: Republican legislators reject abortion ban repeal
Source: SFGate

"Wisconsin Democratic Gov. Tony Evers' bid to repeal the battleground state's dormant abortion ban was headed toward defeat Wednesday, as Republican senators convened and immediately adjourned a special session without taking any action. Wisconsin adopted a ban on abortion except to save the mother's life in 1849, a year after the territory became a state. The U.S. Supreme Court's landmark Roe v. Wade ruling that essentially legalized abortion nationwide in 1973 nullified the ban. The court is expected to rule this month in a case that could end Roe v. Wade, which would allow Wisconsin's ban to take effect. Senators had to meet after Evers called the Legislature into special session earlier this month, but they were not required to vote on the issue. Republicans have blasted the move as a political stunt designed to please the Democratic base as Evers faces reelection in November." (06/22/22)

10) France: Macron hosts opposition for second day of talks amid parliamentary impasse
Source: France 24 [French state media]

"French President Emmanuel Macron pressed on with efforts Wednesday to end the crisis created by his failure to retain a parliamentary majority but with no solution in sight to an impasse that jeopardises his reform plans. Macron's centrist alliance finished Sunday's parliamentary elections 44 seats short of a majority in the National Assembly, as a new left-wing coalition and the far-right made major gains. ... On Tuesday, Macron hosted rare talks at the Elysee Palace with opposition leaders, including the head of the far-right National Rally (RN) Marine Le Pen, to find a way out of the crisis. He will meet other leaders on Wednesday, though the head of the left-wing NUPES alliance, hard-leftist Jean-Luc Mélenchon is sending MP Adrien Quatennens, 32, to represent him in a clear snub to the president." Brown ... of Louisville was arrested without incident in the assault case of Mayor Greg Fischer,' the police department announced Tuesday. Fischer was attacked Saturday while visiting Fourth Street Live to celebrate Kentuckiana Pride and Juneteenth. Video footage shows the suspect punch the mayor, causing him to fall to the ground. 12) GA: GOP voters reject disgraced former president's runoff picks
Source: KVIA 7 News

"Another election day in Georgia has brought a further round of defeats for former President Donald Trump and his chosen Republican candidates. ... In the 10th Congressional District, CNN projects that Kemp-backed businessman Mike Collins, son of the late US Rep. Mac Collins, will defeat former Democratic state Rep. Vernon Jones, who was endorsed by Trump. The race provided the closest thing to a clear proxy battle between Trump and Kemp -- and Collins, though an archconservative aligned with the former President, is on track for a comfortable victory. Trump pick Jake Evans, the former chairman of the State Ethics Commission, will also fall to emergency room physician Rich McCormick in the 6th Congressional District runoff, CNN projects." 13) Progressives [sic]: Windfall Profits Tax "a Better Solution" Than Biden's Gas Tax Holiday
Source: Common Dreams

"As President Joe Biden on Wednesday prepares to urge Congress to temporarily suspend federal gasoline and diesel taxes in a bid to ease pain at the pump, progressives are calling instead for the passage of Democratic lawmakers' overwhelmingly popular bill to impose a windfall profits tax on Big Oil. 'Congress should take the president's call and answer it with the windfall profits tax legislation already proposed in the House and Senate,' Jamie Henn, a spokesperson for the Stop the Oil Profiteering (STOP) campaign, wrote on social media. 'A windfall tax would get more relief to more people by penalizing the Big Oil profiteering that's driving up prices.'" 14) Kuwait: Crown prince dissolves parliament, calls elections
Source: ABC News

"Kuwait's crown prince on Wednesday dissolved Parliament and called for early elections, a move to ease government gridlock that has bred popular opposition and paralyzed the tiny country for months. In his televised national address, the 81-year-old Sheikh Meshal Al Ahmed Al Jaber said that while the ruling family respected Kuwait's constitution that grants the country's rowdy parliament more power than elsewhere in the autocratic region of Persian Gulf sheikhdoms, popular dissatisfaction over the deepening dysfunction compelled the emir to intervene. ... The country's Cabinet resigned over two months ago over disputes with Parliament, resulting in a prolonged paralysis." (06/22/22)

Source: SFGate

"South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has received the final chapter of a report on an extensive judicial investigation into corruption. Chief Justice Raymond Zondo handed over the last installment of the report, reportedly 1,000 pages long, to Ramaphosa. The earlier segments of the report have laid bare the rampant corruption in government and state-owned companies during former President Jacob Zuma's tenure from 2009 to 2018. Speaking at the handover of the final chapter, Ramaphosa emphasized that he didn't know what's in the conclusion, not even the commission's findings on his own testimony." (06/22/22)

16) AL: Britt beats Brooks in Senate primary that divided MAGA world
Source: Politico

"Republican voters in Alabama resolved a high-profile feud in MAGA world on Tuesday, casting votes in the GOP Senate primary runoff between one of former President Donald Trump's most loyal acolytes, and the candidate who ultimately earned his final endorsement. Katie Britt won the runoff after Trump turned on Rep. Mo Brooks, a top election-denying ally, to instead support the establishment-backed candidate. Although the votes were still being tallied, Britt appeared on course to best Brooks by a 2-to-1 margin. ... The race has left some of Trump's staunchest loyalists bewildered by his decision to support Britt, whom he described less than a year ago as the 'assistant' of 'the RINO Senator from Alabama,' saying Britt was 'not what our Country needs.'" 17) FL: Gillum indicted on conspiracy, wire fraud charges
Source: Fox News

"Former Florida Democratic gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum was indicted on charges including conspiracy and 19 counts of wire fraud, the Department of Justice announced Wednesday. Gillum, who was once mayor of Tallahassee, is accused of acting in concert with associate Sharon Janet Lettman-Hicks to solicit funds using false representations and promises. 'The Indictment further alleges the defendants used third parties to divert a portion of those funds to a company owned by Lettman-Hicks, who then fraudulently provided the funds, disguised as payroll payments, to Gillum for his personal use,' a Justice Department press release said. The Justice Department did not go into details of the allegations, only to say the alleged scheme went on from 2016 to 2019. Local reporting from the Tallahassee Democrat indicated that the charges are based on campaign contributions that Gillum and Lettman-Hicks allegedly solicited from undercover FBI agents." (06/22/22)

19) Fears for US woman's life as abortion denied in Malta
Source: BBC News [UK state media]

"Andrea and Jay never thought they'd be in this situation: praying that their baby daughter's heart stops beating before Andrea develops a deadly infection. The couple, from the US, were on holiday in Malta when Andrea Prudente, who's 16-weeks pregnant, started losing blood. Doctors told her the placenta was partly detached and her pregnancy was no longer viable. But the baby's heart was still beating -- and in Malta this means that by law doctors cannot end the pregnancy. For the past week, the couple have been stuck in a hospital room, waiting. 'We're sitting here with the understanding that if she goes into labour, then the hospital will engage. If the baby's heart stops, they will help with that. Other than that, they won't do anything,' Jay Weeldreyer tells me over the phone. His voice is tired and angry. He worries Andrea's condition could change rapidly at any time." (06/22/22)

Source: Washington Examiner

"A woman in Clearwater, Florida, shot and killed an intruder who broke into her bedroom Tuesday while she was sleeping. The Clearwater Police Department reported the woman called 911 around 8:49 a.m. to report the break-in. She was in the middle of a struggle with the intruder, identified as 26-year-old Justin William Wright, during the call with the dispatcher. Investigators would later find injuries on the woman consistent with a struggle. As the encounter ensued, the woman grabbed her gun and shot the intruder once. He died moments later. Clearwater Police Chief Dan Slaughter said there was no reason to believe this was anything other than an act of self-defense in a subsequent press conference." (06/21/22)

21) Whose War Is It?
Source: Antiwar.com
by Daniel Larison

"Hardliners in the US and Europe have spent the last four months agitating for Western escalation in Ukraine with the goal of erasing the remaining limits on direct US and allied involvement in the war. Max Boot is the latest one to insist that it is our war: 'We keep thinking it's their war. We should understand that this is our war -- and act accordingly.' As usual, Boot is wrong in his assessment and in his prescription. While there is no shortage of pundits and politicians that keep trying to make it our war with proposals for no-fly zones and breaking blockades, this is not America's war to fight, and we should not think of it as our war." 22) SCOTUS Again Upholds Double Prosecution and Punishment for the Same Crime
Source: Town Hall
by Jacob Sullum

"The federal government prosecuted Merle Denezpi twice for the same crime. It also punished him twice: the first time with 140 days in a federal detention center, the second time with a prison sentence more than 70 times as long. Although that may seem like an obvious violation of the Fifth Amendment's ban on double jeopardy, the Supreme Court last week ruled that it wasn't. As the six justices in the majority saw it, that puzzling conclusion was the logical result of the Court's counterintuitive precedents on this subject. The Fifth Amendment says no person shall 'be subject for the same offence to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb.' But under the Court's longstanding 'dual sovereignty' doctrine, an offense is not 'the same' when it is criminalized by two different governments." (06/22/22)

23) The FDA's "Future Framework" for Covid Vaccines Is a Reckless Plan
Source: Brownstone Institute
by Toby Rogers

"Pfizer and Moderna have a problem. Their mRNA Covid-19 shots do not stop infection, transmission, hospitalization, nor death from the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Over half a billion doses have been injected into Americans in the past 17 months and these shots have made no discernible impact on the course of the pandemic. ... Pfizer and Moderna are making about $50 billion a year on these shots and they want that to continue. So they need to reformulate. ... reformulated shots mean new clinical trials and new regulatory review by the FDA. There is a decent chance that any reformulated shot might fail a new clinical trial, and the public is deeply skeptical of these shots already, so the scrutiny would be intense. So Pfizer and Moderna have figured out a way to use regulatory capture to get their reformulated Covid-19 shots approved WITHOUT further clinical trials." (06/22/22)

24) Julian Assange's Case Is a Frightening Omen for Press Freedom
Source: Reason
by JD Tuccille

"While the ordeal of Wikileaks founder Julian Assange elicits grudging reactions from many American journalists who find him distasteful, his pending extradition to the United States, just approved by the British government, spurs protests around the world. In countries not blessed with a First Amendment, advocates of free speech rightly see Assange's years-long persecution for exposing U.S. government secrets as an attack on transparency and a threat to anybody who embarrasses powerful officials. Comfortable seat-warmers who are cozy with the powers-that-be may hesitate, but real journalists battling censorious politicians recognize Assange as one of them. ... The dangerous implications of Assange's extradition to the United States and looming prosecution are more obvious to journalists who operate in increasingly hostile environments around the world. The loss of the U.S as a bastion for press freedom would leave them more alone than ever." (06/22/22)

by Dean Baker

"It was very frustrating to read Noam Scheiber's profile of Jaz Brisack, the person who led the first successful union organizing drive at a Starbucks. Brisack does sound like a very impressive person and it is good to see her getting the attention her efforts warrant. However, Scheiber ruins the story by repeatedly telling readers that the neoliberals, who have dominated political debate in recent decades, want a free market. Nothing could be further from the truth. I will start the indictment with their support of intellectual property." (06/22/22)

by Jacob G Hornberger

`"Republicans are licking their chops over the Federal Reserve's ostensible plans to raise interest rates aggressively in the months ahead to combat soaring prices. They view a coming big recession as a grand opportunity to win control over Congress in the upcoming November elections. Of course, we have gone through this political musical-chairs nonsense for decades. If the Fed is filling the balloon with newly printed money, the economy appears prosperous. Whoever is president claims credit for 'good management of the economy.' Voters reward him with reelection. They also elect members of his political party to Congress. But woe to any president who happens to be in office when the Fed starts to reverse course, especially in a big way, as it is ostensibly now doing." (06/22/22)

Latin America's third-largest country has not elected a presidential candidate from the left, or any candidate promising reforms unpalatable to traditional elites, for at least 80 years. With shocking regularity, such candidates have been marginalized, intimidated, or even assassinated. ... As the first president in nearly a century who doesn't count among his base the tiny elite of one of the world's most unequal countries, Gustavo Petro is promising to take Colombia in a much different direction. However, as he won narrowly and lacks a congressional majority, he is emphasizing dialogue and moderation." (06/22/22)

29) Let's Fight WW3 Over Lithuania
Source: Caitlin Johnstone, Rogue Journalist
by Caitlin Johnstone

"The problem with anti-imperialists who spend all their time criticizing the evil US empire is that there aren't nearly enough of them. ... People who respond to criticisms of the US by babbling about the misdeeds of other governments are just saying you should never criticize the most powerful government in the world for any reason. ... Hey I've got a great idea, let's start World War Three over a NATO country that most Americans don't even know exists. Liberals learned the word 'Lithuania' ten seconds ago and they're ready to nuke Moscow over it. ... If you're on the front lines risking your own life fighting and killing Russians for Ukraine, I will happily listen to your opinion on why there should be no negotiated settlement to end this war. Otherwise, shut the fuck up you pathetic couch warrior." (06/22/22)

30) Red Flag Laws Are Ripe for Abuse. Americans Are Right to Reject Them.
Source: Human Events
by David Marcus

"Red Flags are all over the place these days. You see it a lot in dating advice. Little signs that this isn't your soulmate, like a guy who orders salad or a woman who starts off with two Irish Car Bombs. In a much more serious iteration of this banner metaphor federal and state officials are looking to beef up our 'red flag' laws surrounding gun ownership. The two examples are related. But while the mixing and mingling 20-something has every right to swipe away the guy with no awesome neck tattoo, our government has to be more careful in looking for warning signs that someone should be deprived of a constitutional right." 32) Shortages and Inflation to be the New Norm as Refinery Closures Outpace New Construction
Source: Heartland Institute
by Ronald Stein

"As the world has become impassioned with increasing its electricity generation from wind turbines and solar panels from breezes and sunshine, the world is silently slipping into a future of shortages and inflation as society's demands for all the products and fuels manufactured from crude oil is exceeding the supply available from the dwindling number of refineries. ... In 2019 there were 135 refineries in the U.S.  but five facilities were shuttered during the last two years. Each refinery location is a business that needs to make business decisions. Consequently, one in five oil refineries are expected to cease operations over the next five years." (06/22/22)

33) Why Progressive Challenger Kina Collins Is Taking on a 25-Year Incumbent
Source: In These Times
by Skyler Aikerson

"In the 2020 Democratic primary for Illinoi's 7th congressional district, Kina Collins ran against longtime incumbent Rep. Danny K. Davis (D‑Ill.) and won just 13.8 percent of the vote to the 25-year congressman's 61.4 percent. But while she lost handily two years ago, this time, she says, is different. After 'the pandemic exposed a lot of urgent crises that require urgent leadership,' Collins says she decided it was time to 'step up and tackle some of those problems' by running again. And she has gained the backing of a host of left electoral groups such as Justice Democrats .... Collins, 31, has been a longtime advocate against gun violence in the area, and helped found the Chicago Neighborhood Alliance which works on community-specific issues including public safety. ... Davis, meanwhile, has served as congressman for the district since Collins was five-years-old." (06/22/22)

34) Think state supreme courts will save abortion rights? Think again.
Source: Washington Post
by Neal Devins

"If the U.S. Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade, don't look to state supreme courts to step in to protect abortion rights. State supreme courts have the power to interpret their own state constitutions to provide broader protections for individual liberty than the U.S. Supreme Court. But they rarely break from their state's dominant political culture. Unlike life-tenured federal court judges, justices in 38 states stand for election, and their decisions are subject to voter initiatives and other democratic checks. On abortion, they probably agree with their state's political establishment and, if not, they understand that any decision countermanding the state is subject to political override." (06/22/22)

35) US Household Saving Rate Vanishes, Credit Card Debt Soars
Source: Ludwig von Mises Institute
by Daniel Lacalle

"The United States personal saving rate is now 3.3 percent below its prepandemic level, and in early May, the University of Michigan consumer confidence index fell from 65.2 to an eleven-year low of 59.1, deep into recessionary risk territory. The plummeting saving rate is deeply concerning. It proves that consumers are suffering from elevated inflation as real wages remain in negative territory. From April 2021 to April 2022, seasonally adjusted real average hourly earnings decreased 2.3 percent, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Put these two figures together -- real average earnings down 2.3 percent and the household saving rate almost halved. Families are struggling, wages are dissolved by inflation and savings are being wiped out. Consumer credit card debt is almost at all-time highs. Balances rose to $841 billion in the first three months of 2022, according to data from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York." (06/22/22)

36) Can The Fed Save Us?
Source: American Institute for Economic Research
by Ryan M Yonk & Fernando M D'Andrea

"The Fed is, of course, the agency most closely associated with dealing with the causes and effects of inflation. This association is highly influenced by the Fed itself. Whenever there is an economic disruption, the clarion call is that the Fed must do something. Elected officials and the public expect the Fed to provide nonpartisan economic analysis to help manage the economy and avoid large-scale economic disruptions. Despite this expectation, and the real expertise within the Fed, high levels of inflation are with us, and most experts expect them to continue. Which points to the biggest problem the Fed faces. In contrast to the perception that the Fed is comprised of non-political experts on the mechanics of the economy, the Fed is expected to manage the economy within a political system." (06/22/22)

37) Return to What?
Source: The Pamphleteer
by Davis Hunt

"Donald Trump's political purpose was to enter the arena and kick the cobwebs off a teetering bureaucracy wherein unelected officials outnumber elected officials in Washington D.C. 5,400 to 1. That number comes from the post-Nixon era in which Democrats sought to entrench their gains following Watergate through budgetary expansion and the creation of various government agencies riding the coattails of LBJ's disastrous social programs. It's likely the ratio has only increased since then. We see this trend in nearly every government body, especially those with monopoly influence such as the public school system. Budgets tend to favor the expansion of existing agencies and bodies and rarely, if ever, advocate for a reduction in their size. Last night, we witnessed this at Nashville's Metro Council meeting wherein the Council approved a new $3B budget (more on that below)." (06/22/22)

I can't think of a worse waste of time than watching the Jan. 6th Congressional clown show. 39) Fed's Tighter Interest Rate Stance Likely To Prolong Economic Slump
Source: Cobden Centre
by Dr. Frank Shostak

"In response to the strengthening in the yearly growth rate of the consumer price index (CPI) to 8.6% in May from 5% in May last year, on Wednesday June 15, 2022, the US central bank (Fed) raised the policy interest rate .... Fed officials are of the view that the correct approach to counter this massive increase in the CPI is to raise interest rates. A tighter interest rate stance, it is held, is going to cool off the demand for goods and services. This in turn, is likely to weaken the growth rate of the CPI labelled as inflation. ... If Fed officials were to concede that inflation is about increases in the money supply then they would have had to accept that the key cause behind strong increases in prices is the alleged inflation fighter the Fed itself." 40) The Inflation Cure
Source: RealClearPolitics
by Betsy McCaughey

"Last week, the Federal Reserve raised the interest rate on money it lends to other banks by .75%, the biggest hike in three decades. Fed Chair Jerome Powell said the hike is necessary to rein in skyrocketing inflation. He's planning more hikes in the coming months. These hikes will lead to increased interest charges on credit cards and higher rates on home equity loans, car loans and mortgages. It's a punch in the gut for people who need to borrow. ... The Fed has no choice but to act. In fact, it waited too long. The Fed's mission is to maintain price stability and full employment. Inflation hit a 40-year high in May." (06/22/22)

We are, after all, in the midst of both a war inside of European borders and an economic crisis. The seemingly endless Assange saga has been going on for 12 years, and there is undoubtedly fatigue on the part of news consumers who have lost interest in the story. 42) Biden Needs to Decide Whether High Gas Prices Are Good or Bad
Source: The Daily Beast
by Matt Lewis

"Joe Biden keeps saying the quiet part out loud. As gas prices continue to skyrocket, he's suggesting that maybe high prices are a feature, not a bug: 'We have a chance to make a fundamental turn toward renewable energy, electric vehicles, and across the board,' he said on Monday. This was not a one-time gaffe. ... On one hand, we are told that Biden is 'obsessed with the fact that gas prices are so high and people are hurting,' as Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm put it. On the other hand, the president keeps suggesting that high gas prices are a necessary ingredient for his transformational presidency. You don't have to be a conspiracy theorist to take him at his word. And yet, this very notion is political death." (06/22/22)

43) Federal Reserve's Rate Increases: Too Little Too Late?
Source: Campaign For Liberty
by John McCardell

"Stocks have fallen much lately. This is in part because of fears rate hikes will push the economy into recession. The Fed itself seems to believe that the economy is going to slow down in the near future, as it has reduced its projection of 2.2 percent economic growth in 2022 to 1.7 percent. Even more ominously, the Atlanta Fed's GDP tracker fell to zero for the second quarter of 2022, due in part to May's weak retail sales. The Fed claims it will reduce inflation without significantly increasing unemployment or causing a recession. This is likely to be as accurate as the Fed's prediction that inflation was 'transitory.' This latest rate increase will only raise rates to where they were before the lockdowns led the Fed to embark on a historic money-creating spree." (06/22/22)

44) It's Time for Australia to Demand Julian Assange's Release
Source: Jacobin
by Zacharias Szumer

"To no one's surprise, UK home secretary Priti Patel has rubber-stamped an order to extradite Julian Assange to the United States, where the WikiLeaks founder faces up to 175 years in prison on a variety of espionage charges. US marshals won't be arriving just yet, however, as Assange's legal team will launch further appeals through the British courts and possibly the European Court of Human Rights. Assange's family and supporters have also expressed hope that Australia's newly elected Labor prime minister Anthony Albanese will intervene in the case. The Australian government has a poor track record when it comes to offering meaningful support to Assange. Its responsibility to do so, as the Australian journalist faces the hell of extradition, is more urgent and necessary than ever." (06/21/22)

45) The left [sic] doesn't care about crime

"There's a serious topic tonight. Every Monday, we usually cover the previous weekend's violence. It's another thing we've gotten used to tracking, like inflation or how often Biden loses a fight with gravity. But now it's like how many have been shot? How many dead? It's like doing a weather report. And in Chicago, it means whether you survive the weekend. Yeah. A little wordplay there, because lately it's been nothing but storms of violence accompanied by a hail of bullets. As of today, five major US cities are on track to break their already impressive homicide figures. Kudos go out to L.A., D.C., Baltimore, Milwaukee and Atlanta, where the cost of living rises with your chance of dying. It wasn't easy, but they gave it all they had to surpass last year's numbers." "Welcome to summer! As we seem to be running out of all sorts of essential and nice to have things, courtesy of COVID-19, the Pandemic Panic, and those looking for any crisis to blow up into a world-ending disaster, we see we have another supply problem. Here in the West, especially the Southwest, it is a little thing called water. The Colorado is short of it, and so Lake Mead keeps dropping, exposing all those mysterious dead bodies and more. And until the torrential rains last week, Montana and Wyoming were hurting too. (And may still be, even with the flooding.) Much of the West is in drought." (06/21/22)

47) The Separation of Church and State Had a Very Bad Day at the Supreme Court
Source: The New Republic
by Matt Ford

"The First Amendment sets forth two requirements for the government when it comes to religion. On one hand, it 'shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion,' which is known as the Establishment clause. Nor shall it pass a law 'prohibiting the free exercise thereof,' which is called -- you guessed it -- the Free Exercise clause. What happens when these clauses are in tension with each other? In Tuesday's decision in Carson v. Makin, the Supreme Court effectively said that the Establishment clause must typically give way to the Free Exercise clause. The 6-3 ruling, which fell along the usual ideological lines, struck down a Maine law that limits its tuition-assistance program to 'nonsectarian' schools." (06/21/22)

48) These Widespread Shortages Can't Be Explained by Supply Constraints Alone
Source: Foundation for Economic Education
by Walter Block

"Basic introductory Economics 101 teaches us that a shortage occurs when demand for an item exceeds its supply. What invariably occurs then? Why, prices rise. When this takes place, businesses are incentivized to produce more, buyers to purchase less. Voila, the shortage ends. Why doesn't this occur under the Biden Administration? Why do we have so many shortages? One possibility not at all in the public eye is that business firms are afraid to raise prices lest they be charged with price gouging." [editor's note: The major evidence for that possibility would be prices not rising. But in fact prices are rising faster than they have in decades – TLK] (06/21/22)

49) The Fed Is Crushing Investment Right When We Need It
Source: The American Prospect
by David Dayen

"The U.S. economy has a short-term problem and a more enduring long-term problem. The first is high inflation and hence decreasing real wages, which makes it hard to sustain growth in an economy mostly dependent on consumer spending. Second, over the past 50 years we have seen a troubling drop in investment (whether for infrastructure or industrial activity or basic necessities) that has inflated the cost of things like housing and health care while leaving the nation vulnerable to supply crunches caused by the pandemic and Russia's war on Ukraine. The decided-upon cure for the short-term problem -- rising interest rates from the Federal Reserve -- is degrading the long-term problem. What's more, it's unlikely to make more than a small dent in rising prices." (06/22/22)

50) The Rationalism and Romanticism of John Stuart Mill
Source: Quillette
by Laurie Wastell

"John Stuart Mill was, by his own lights, a liberal and a progressive. Human advancement is his cause, and the 'despotism of custom' his foe, one he inveighs against repeatedly in his most famous work, On Liberty. ... today Mill is either attacked as a Faustian apologist for limitless autonomy or praised as a rationalist enlightenment visionary: though they differ on the merits of his vision, both liberals and anti-liberals view Mill as a progressive. However, it is not so easy to place Mill unequivocally in the progressive camp. Indeed, the venerated founder of classical liberalism often evinces a seemingly anti-modern cultural critique, which in our own times is characteristic of the dissident Right." (06/21/22)
