Quarantine is a remake of the Spanish horror film REC A faithful adaptation of the 2007 Spanish film REC, QUARANTINE chronicles the outbreak of a rabies-like disease in a Los Angeles apartment building and the struggle of the unaffected residents to stay alive after the authorities trap them inside in an effort to contain it. Equal parts BLAIR WITCH PROJECT and 28 DAYS LATER, the film is presented through the eye of a video camera, putting the audience in the middle of the action and creating a heightened level of intensity and realism. Television reporter Angela (Jennifer Carpenter) and her cameraman, Scott (Steve Harris), are covering the goings-on at a firehouse for a program about night shift workers. As she clowns around with two flirty firemen (Jonathan Schaech and Jay Hernandez), an alarm sounds, and a truck is dispatched--with Angela and Scott on board---to an apartment building where an old woman has seemingly lost her mind. The woman bites one of the firemen and is soon killed, but when more tenants turn up with the same disorder, it's clear that a chain reaction is occurring. Unfortunately for Angela and the rest of the uninfected residents, the authorities have quarantined the building---but she and Scott continue to document the tragic and terrifying events inside the building as those inside are one by one transformed into bloodthirsty monsters. Director John Eric Dowdle, whose film THE POUGHKEEPSIE TAPES also used a pseudo-documentary approach in detailing the crimes of a serial killer, creates a sustained level of chaos and fear that will have all but the most seasoned horror fan cowering in the corner. The movie Passchendaele tells the heroism of those who fought in battle, and of the ones that loved them. One of the most stirring and ambitious films ever made in Canada, Paul Gross's Passchendaele recounts what may have been the most savage battle of the First World War. Participation in the Battle of Passchendaele was a pivotal moment in Canadian history that defined the nation in the eyes of the world for years to come. That acclaim came at a high price, however, and Canada's losses were great. Yet this is not simply a story about love of country, but one of love discovered amid the strife of war. Telling of a passion that endured despite cultural upheaval, vast distance and the tragedies of the battlefield, Passchendaele is as romantic as it is proud in its approach to this legacy. Sergeant Michael Dunne (Gross) is sent back to the home front after he is wounded. While recuperating, he meets Sarah (Caroline Dhavernas), a stunning young nurse, and falls deeply in love with her. Like him, Sarah has been permanently scarred by the conflict. Her father was killed in the war, and she is terrified that her hotheaded younger brother David (Joe Dinicol) will soon be shipped to the trenches. When David is indeed sent to Europe, Dunne follows, determined to protect him. A passion project for Gross, the film was based on stories told to him by his grandfather, a veteran of the war to end all wars. This deeply personal connection is evident in his direction. Passchendaele pays tribute to the foot soldier, privileging the world-weary Dunne's perspective on war. Having witnessed the horrors of combat, he is well aware that this gruelling form of fighting bears no glory. But what Gross finds in Dunne is a man capable of hope and devotion despite all. In his love for Sarah, the promise of a future beyond the clouds of war begins to take shape. Gross captures a perfect balance, investing the battle scenes with a stunning ferocity but also crafting moments of remarkable beauty. Both Sarah and the resplendent prairie views remind Dunne of what he and his countrymen are fighting for. As an actor, Gross delivers a peerless turn, while promising young talents Dhavernas and Dinicol give marvellous performances. Passchendaele is a unique achievement in Canadian film, and not only because of its scope. Too often, Canadians have a selfeffacing attitude toward their own achievements. The wittily titled Five Filosophical Fables (1967) consists of a series of sketches set to an accompaniment of music by Mendelson seemingly devoid of any higher meaning. In one, a young Japanese man attends a plush garden party held by a group of well-heeled Westerners, who periodically approach him and take possession of an item of his clothing. By the end of the film, he is left stark naked and wondering around the streets of Tokyo to the stares of clearly bewildered passers-by. The Western view of Japan is revealed as a view in a mirror: we look at Japan, but we see ourselves. The distinguished film critic, author and film-maker Donald Richie explores this theme, inspired by the festival's extensive Japanese programme and particularly by the series of 'imaginings' of Japan by Western directors presented under the rubric 'Bridge in the Rain'. Donald Richie has lived in Japan since 1954, he is recognised as one of the world's experts on Japanese cinema and its history. His curatorial activity includes retrospectives of Ozu, Yanagimachi, the Japanese Film and Japanese Experimental Film. From 1968-73 he was Curator of Film at the Museum of Modern Art, NY. As a film critic he has published widely and currently contributes to the International Herald Tribune and The Japan Times. His many books on Japanese cinema include the groundbreaking history The Japanese Film: Art and Industry (with Joseph Anderson, 1959) and he also written extensively on other aspects of Japan in The Inland Sea and collected essays A Lateral View and Partial Views. To mark the occasion of his Serge Daney lecture, the festival has invited Donald Richie to present a programme of his own films. In the late 1960s, having made short films since the 1940s, Richie produced a startling, influential and very personal series of experimental films. Very much in tune with his film-making contemporaries in the US, in these films he explored new narrative or diary approaches to film, but at the same time they were a strong and profound response to his experiences and encounters in Japan. As such, these films provide a further commentary on the theme of a Westerner's observation of Japan, from a perspective that is nevertheless steeped in that culture. |

Babyface: From The Heart (2009) Posted: 29 Jan 2009 09:59 PM PST  MP3 192 Kbps VBR | 102MB | R&BThis set, which originally appeared in 2001 with different artwork as Love Songs -- give Legacy some credit for conveniently mentioning the fact on the back of the disc, unlike similar compilation repackagings that have hit the market throughout the years -- contains 75 minutes of Babyface's most romantic ballads with a couple midtempo singles (such as "For the Cool in You") thrown in for good measure. It picks from Face's Epic albums, from the 1986 solo debut Lovers through 1996's The Day, with the inclusion of several Top Ten R&B hits, like "Whip Appeal" and "Every Time I Close My Eyes," as well as the excellent album cut "Soon as I Get Home." Naturally, this cannot act as a substitute for a proper Babyface anthology like The Essential Babyface (where you can get some uptempo high points like "My Kinda Girl"), but it does dig a little deeper into the type of material Face has done best. Someone Like You won't win any awards for originality, but it's universal in its comedic sympathy for the brokenhearted.
