What?

Good grief - Leon wins it!

Well done Leon! I think Rhydian just overdid the solemn stuff tonight.

gobsmacked but Leon is the ultimate dark horse and deserves to win, he has
improved throughout the show and singing with Kylie probably swung it.
Methinks he is going to have a very special xmas this year...

Leon wanted it bad and he got it I wish him luck but I think he is going to
have the same success as Leona!

It's going to be Leon and Leona head-to-head in the charts next week.

yep there was some bad planning going on there. Simon was right when he said
he didn't want to 'rush things' with Leona - where has she been for the last
year, and then comes back around Christmas with a top number. So in that
case expect to see Leon disappear and come back with a hit this time next
year!

nice - but did Europe phone in an vote for him on the show and make him a
winner? - I know these winners want to conquer the US Markets an Europe
markets but I think what is important is that they crack the UK market first
an not disappear from the UK scene and bring out quite a few songs (for the
UK) after they win the X-Factor then people in the UK will not be asking the
question 'whatever happened to last years winner - they haven't bought out
any songs for ages!'

It was an interesting manipulation of viewers. Leon simply wasn't the
best vocalist, or the most professional entertainer. However on the
night ITV suddenly turned it into an almost Eurovision event with
"England vs Scotland vs Wales". Several times the nationalistic aspect
was mentioned and therefore it became an easy method of getting stupid
viewers to vote for nationality over talent.

If that wasn't enough to ensure his success, they had Kylie Minogue to
sing alongside him. Kylie - one of the hottest properties at the
moment, far more a star than Jason Donavan is at present. Again,
stupid viewers would vote for the act that Kylie has sanctioned.

All in all a very transparent way for X-Factor to get the winner they
wanted, - a young lad with more saleability to girls than the other
acts. Talent had nothing to do with it. Leon's voice isn't very
strong, his stage presence is poor, and you'd see better acts in a
back street club. But he's a pretty boy and teenie girls will buy his
single.

Last year a black girl won. This year a white boy. Next year a group
will win. Wait and see. It's so predictable.

vote for him!!

I don't follow this argument. England's population is bigger than Scotland's.

All this assumes that Syco/BMG/whoever preferred Leon to win rather than
Rhydian. But I think that Leon is high risk because of the issues
that you mention. He lacks experience and gets very nervous. He will
be very hard to manage well.

Since it appears that Rhydian has been offered a recording contract
as well, I think it is more likely that they would have preferred
Rhydian to win, suggesting that what we have here is cock-up rather
than conspiracy.

Personally, I would say that Leon did raise his game significantly on
the night, and he was helped by having a good up-tempo number with
some choreography and (of course) with Kylie, while Rhydian was
boring us to death with his very worthy, professionally accurate,
but rather slow songs.

On the final sing-off, I thought Rhydian seemed to strain at the
high register part of the song, even though he was much more assured
in other parts. Leon was wobbly early on, but he pulled it off at
the end with aplomb.

Did you not think they were trying hard for a group to win this year?
I did. They pushed "Hope" as far they could, but they just weren't up
to the job.

Next year, I would like to be spared any details of the contestants'
home lives, including how many parents they've got and whether they
are alive, dead or Scottish.

I can remember some time ago, maybe in the Pop Idol days, there used
to be short programmes in the week where you could watch them rehearse
with the vocal coaches - now that was much more interesting than
whether they used to be a dinner lady.

What got on my nerves about her was how she had to keep playing her sympathy
card about her father. Now whether she was 'told' to do that to make the
public feel sorry for her and vote for her or whether it was her own plan or
even if it was unintentional (which I doubt) I don't care I was just getting
so fed up with it week after week!

And this:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/7149934.stm

"About 700 people have now complained to watchdog Ofcom
they were unable to vote for Rhydian Roberts in The X Factor"

Now I can recall in the early days of telephone voting that the idea
was that you voted once for your chosen person. If you didn't get
through then you tried again until you did. Telephone capacity
was not so great in those days but it was a step up from the
days of "send a postcard with your vote" and the calls were
charged at the normal national rate.

However a modern telephone system has huge capacity (which is
why calls are (nearly) free and you mostly pay line rental) so
now the idea is to vote lots of times for your favourite - at
a premium rate of course. So the complaints now are along
the lines of "I tried 50 times but only got through twice."

In fact for the multiple-voting addicts presumably there is
almost no limit to the capacity that they could consume. They
will all redial continuously and bankrupt themselves in the
process if every attempt works.

Maybe it is just as well that the telephone system has some
limit or we would now be getting complaints to OFCOM of
loads of people spending hundreds of pounds voting and
now regretting it.

Anyway, it's all tosh that Rhydian was robbed according to this report:

http://www.heatworld.com/Article/3614/Rhydian-wasnt-as-popular-as-we-thought

They reckon that Leon was getting more votes than Rhydian every week.
